All About Crane's Critter Care
"We are back we are doing a new segment where we bring on a small business owner so we can talk a little bit about their business about what they do. What kind of issues or problems. They've come up. Come against in starting in running a business. You know maybe business during kobe and whatever comes up and so right now we have with us gen from cranes critter care john. Thanks for joining us for the first small business segment. Thank you so much for inviting us into i actually chow four chinchilla friends with me this ursula one thing. That's a little bit different about further care. Is we go far beyond just captain dogs. We do all sorts of exotic whether it's earned small mammals sarmiento reptiles anything because we have so many people that have pets chats dogs in. I noticed when i was working at the ap l. That was a big issue. People were having was not being For anything other than just basing cat dog or if they had animal what medical issues. So that's one thing that Critter cares able to do is we can do animals with medical issues whether that be needing shots multiple times a day medications multiple times a day. We can do dogs or cats with behavioral issues. That could normally go to a kennel or normal. Dog sitter whether it be sonic stranger danger or anything bats. We also work with harder cheeses. I personally love the challenges in house. Seven years experience were sheltered in animals because training shelter. Animal is so much different than training in that. You thought from the pet store in today's nickel company though. It's just a little bit different methods of going about things but it's been really great overall. We've had to change a lot of cova right. And that's one thing. This kind of bennett trick is as cova comes up each month. We have to kind of a daft. Do whatever we see that customers are looking for whether if the people going out of town so that increase number of training sessions of we noticed people wanting more medical care people wanting more educational seminars. So whatever people are looking for cranes critter cares filling in that gap and just go with the flow of were covance. Add in what people are meeting with as far as animal care. So where would you say you start. Sounds like such an amazing and valiant effort that you're doing especially for individuals in the community. You're almost like an immeasurable acid because through You're still trying to push still trying to make sure that the animal care is first and foremost so what pushed you into his avenue this world so i actually started adding animal shelter as a veterinarian assistant. I was there for four years and then i switched to another shelter as their main foster four nader doing educational seminars. And that's one of the biggest issues i noticed was i was in the intake department where people would surrender. Animals in have issues in a big thing is lack of education whether it be their animal has issued. They don't know how to properly train or fix it. So then immediately playbay. Just surrender or their four hours a day. Don't have anyone to let them out in the they don't have time to have an animal or someone passed away or moved out there. Sheila left behind. They have no idea how to take care of. It can shallow surrender over and it's one of those things where the more education were able to provide the public a lot. More people keep animals in their homes. Take better care of their animals. It makes a better relationship between the owner of pet in more animals. Just stay healthy happy home. So it's a little bit of keeping animals out of the shelter keeping almond good conditions just for improve quality of life for everyone right. Yeah no so. I wanted to actually ask about something along those same lines. Since we've been going through cova. This is something that we touched on. In in one of my classes actually we were talking about Pharmaceuticals and medications for animals versus for people Was he was business of biology through. You're talking about big pharma quite a bit but you know one of the things that came up is that there's different right if you have a life threatening disease or disorder. You're probably more likely to get that medication than you would. For a life threatening disease or disorder for an animal or at least some people are so along those same lines of what you were talking about. One thing that i was hoping to kind of get out there. One thing i think that needs saying is i'm sure that lots of people bought a new animal because the kobe right. You're locked up. You're stuck at home. You need a buddy someone. Yeah but that said tat. I'm slightly concerned that we're gonna see a big christmas dump ejup fact at the end of covid right where everyone is like. Well now. we're back at work now. We're back at school now. We're busy now. We don't have any time and so well. We have to get rid of the animals. So i guess i wanted to kick it over to jenin. Just see what you thought about that. Do you think that phenomenon is going to happen once we quote unquote get back to normal and like what could you say to pet owners. That currently do have their pet that you know maybe thinking of doing something like that so i completely agree and that's something even when i felt the shelter we talked about with so many people now that they're working from home temporarily were adopting animals but they're not thinking in the future a lot of those times so that's one thing during summer especially i focused on was doing seminars in different on how to prevent separation anxiety. That's gonna be one of the issues as well with on people getting poppies. The puppies are missing to people being home all day leaving for maybe two hours tops and all of a sudden you're drastically or changing their schedule their way of life pretty much by being gone nine ten hours a day. That's going to have a lot of issues with separation. Anxiety being the biggest one and then i see a lot of people once that happens to run around to shelters reasonable surrender.

"To set you on track to living your happily ever after in now onto the show. Hello and welcome to your retirement solution with jim. Black good jim how are you. I'm doing fantastic. Good here from you. It's good to hear your voice as well We were discussing a little bit before the podcast about some festivities. We got to enjoy with family and things that we've done And it really is difficult in twenty twenty with this whole covid pandemic in the situation. We're facing here. I know that it's good to see family. But it's also good to be safe right. That is true. And that's been a challenge. I think for a lot of people. We ended up kind of doing things on a much smaller scale than we had anticipated. And this is the. I think the first time that. I can remember in history when my mom didn't join us for thanksgiving dinner so it was a little different. It was was a little different. But i know that. That's obviously you want your mom to be safe. You won't family to be safe. We all do and as business owners. You know. you want your staff to be safe. So i'm i'm kinda curious house. Trs navigated the covid pandemic internally within your group. Well that certainly has been an interesting piece for us. We are very sensitive to the fact that our clients fall right into that category of some of the most at risk group and so even though we moved into a brand new big space not very long before covance started we more than doubled the size of our space. We almost immediately cut everything back so we only had a handful of staff and have continued to do. This only have a handful of staff in the office at any one time. It's been interesting to kind of watch the change with clients. We also initially most people. I think we're saying oh this is not going to be long and we'll just keep doing our regular staff and now we've gone to most of our meetings our zoom meetings where people and people are like. It's like wait a minute. I'm sitting here in my jammies. All right we're getting the same stuff done and maybe even more efficiently. So that's been an interesting change as far as kind of getting technology to catch up. I guess it was out there but my preference is always been face to face meetings. So and i don't know that that will change as things can lead up here but for now we're still running business as usual for clients. They just may not necessarily be here. In fact it's been kind of fun where we've gone ahead and done some annual reviews for people who are at their other home down in arizona or in hawaii where normally we would have to wait to schedule those until they got back there just staying put warranty and in places that were for the last six months and we're able to do everything if they were right here in the office. That's been good. Yeah you know. The other part. I would i would throw in there. Then i think is even more important is it's always great to see clients and we love having clients..

You know you're going to the movie theater you're at restaurants you're doing whatever you're doing now this movie comes out good time okay. A few things here and there but we got out of it mostly unscathed. Here's a cautionary tale for the next time it happens. Let's not be caught off guard. I could totally get behind that right. "Well in light. Wisely. They know where the opportunities are. We have a cohort today of 275 investigators across 15 countries. And they are mining every opportunity. The change outcome. If you look at the timeline of the work that they've done and the progress they produced over the years, going back to the early years The identification of Bracco on BRAC. Two mutations work that brought forward Herceptin that brought forward Tamoxifin. Drugs change outcome dramatically. They brought forward. The work that showed the breast cancer isn't one disease, a copy for five different diseases, and each has more in common with other forms of cancers and with each other. The recherche has shown. For example, our researchers have shown that Once you identify the tumor type, you find it. You can have more targeted therapies and better outcome. We funded the work for the man of Prince and Aunt aside. We funded the work that last year brought forward The results of the tailor study. That was a game changing 10 year investment. Four countries 12,000 women monitor over the course of the disease. With the objective, understand? Does a woman with a middle, scoring an aunt aside test and asked if we helped to develop need early stage breast cancer need of chemotherapy and hormone therapy. And water the outcomes on hormone therapy alone and we have proven and women cannot benefit from the finding that upwards of 100,000 women in the U. S today. And safely forgo chemotherapy. And have hormone therapy alone and enjoy the same race is disease free survival on the same low rates of recurrence. So the researchers were funding on the front lines producing ADA that informs the development of therapies and passed forward for women and then around the girls every day. I'm joined by Meyer, a bib Luit, president and CEO of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. You can find out more at B. C r f dot org's. Of course, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. How much is that initiative helped in the battle against breast cancer. Well, I will say we look forward to October every year because the public's attention is riveted on breast cancer in the month when I will say that women and men are diagnosed 12 months of the year. So while it is a critical point on the calendar for us to tell our story and fundraising and to show the power of research on the impact of the work we've done It is a 12 months. Not process. Right now, with co bit on the front lines affecting everybody know breast cancer affect women for cancer doesn't take a pause for a pandemic, and when we have resolved Covance Till 110 people a day a day in this country will be diagnosed. It was breast cancer. But this is our month. I'm grateful that I heart radio for helping us tell the story. We have 130 corporate partners will bring products the market many this month, some year round,.

"And remember that podcast is not just a summary of the show. It's separate content, often with a separate host. I actually hosted this Wednesday, but sometimes it's someone else from our teams get a different perspective. You want to make sure that you're listening to both on a weekly basis if you can, and Matt Anderson my Planning on the frontage of excusing like college on the financial planning side, who actually hosted the show last week. He is standing by live to speak with you. If you're not a client, maybe you're an individual investor feeling a little bit of drift. Maybe everything has gotten a little too confusing. Or maybe you are working with an advisor. But he is not getting the attention. You're not getting the nuance. You're not getting any customized advice or planning. Please give medical He's standing by live for the next hour. 8667589473866758 wise, He love to speak with you and set up a time to meet with our group. I was just saying before the break that The consensus is that a Democratic sweep scenario would be bad for the stock market, and I'm bringing this up because that's the way the Poles were going. I mean, obviously in 2016, the Poles were dead wrong. We all know that and we all know we could get a different type of outcome. But the market for the last several months with Biden in the lead and with Democrats having a slight odds of picking up the Senate from the Republicans. Markets had several months to sort of position for that outcome. And I was just making the point that if you actually do the math, you consider the potential negatives of higher corporate tax rates, but the potential positives for earnings of a tremendous amount of stimulus and less global trade tension. There's a really good chance Stumpy 500 earnings over the next several years are actually positively affected in a Democratic sweep scenario, although the trajectory of interest rates will be important to watch because higher interest rates And the expectation of higher stimulus and more government spending could actually work against evaluations at the very least, could trigger some rotation from expensive growth stocks into more value oriented stocks. And I just started talking about health care. Healthcare, as we all know, is an extremely politically charged. Issue but also market sector healthcare sector trading at its largest discount to the S and P 530 years very similar to the dynamic we've seen a couple times. We saw a decline in healthcare evaluations around the proposal of the Clinton health care plan Back in the early nineties. I think that was 1993 right and also around the passage of Obamacare, the Affordable Care act in 2010 right now. Obviously a lot of consternation about what's gonna happen in the Supreme Court. Is obamacare going to get overturned? That's an issue has been talking about. There's been talk about price controls. Drug price controls a lot of things going on, not to mention If the Democrats do pick up leadership, there is still that sort of left part of the party that is talking more about socialized medicine. So all of those things are weighing on health care valuations. But if history is any guide Once we get some resolution and a little bit of clarity on the political situation that valuation discount often reverses in healthcare tends to outperform. So we have exposure and pharmaceuticals in our portfolio, and we have a sort of exposure and what I would call sort of life sciences conglomerate testing equipment, that type of thing. But one area where we have not had any exposure up until now. It's sort of testing. Okay, So we just took a position for the first time in a laboratory Corporation of America. You probably know them as lab corps symbol. L h I don't think they are a mystery to anyone. At some point in your life. You probably had some bloodwork sento lab core. You probably got the flu test through them or maybe a covert test through them. But lab core is a company. We all know they are the Essentially the largest publicly traded combination of a laboratory diagnostic laboratory and a contract research organization. What's a contract research organization? Well lot of drug companies these days that are running the drug trials. They don't do all the administration of those trials themselves, so they're outsourcing them. To a company like lab court to do the patient recruitment a lot of the administration around that it's become a very profitable business. And at 12 times earnings. We think it's a real value play here. But let me explain to you a bit about you know the thesis behind it, Of course, of course. They're best known for that lab business, and they essentially have a duopoly with a company called Quest Diagnostics Symbol D G X. Inquest trades around 1 13 Lab corps currently trades around 1 87 share, so it's a duopoly. And lab core is very well positioned to capitalize on long term trends. One of those long term trends, the biggest one is hospitals are looking to cut costs. They're looking to outsource a lot of that business. Okay, that diagnostics business is about $80 billion market still mostly captured by hospitals and physicians. In fact, quest and lab corps only have about 20% market share. But again, hospitals are starting to outsource that as greater spending pressures. Really you're forcing them to look outside for their chest services. So I think that's a pretty steadily growing business and pretty consistent for lab core. The problem with the business and it's been the problem for a lot of hospitals. A lot of testing companies you know during this covert shutdown is that people aren't doing all the routine stuff. Know how many Americans are had postponed their annual physical. For example, I'm raising my hand. I'm on radio here, but my hand is raised. I was supposed to go in for physical over the last few months. I have not. Okay, And obviously they still have their covert testing. Okay, so they're making some money there and their margins air. There are actually better than a lot of people think. But all the routine stuff that we do the blood work the year and work all the things that we I need to do and have to do have been getting deferred. So I think that business really comes back in spades starting next year. OK s O that that part of their business should look a lot better other part of their business again, the the outsourcing of sort of clinical trial work. They acquired a company called Covance C O V a in a couple years ago. And it's been a little bit slow going there, okay? They Ah, certainly that part of their business has the greatest growth trajectory. It's not 40% of live scores overall business, but so far the sort of synergies that they expected to realize from that deal have been a little bit lighter than maybe what they expected. But I think ultimately there is a very natural synergy between the two businesses. Province reasons, right. The cove there Covance drug trial. Um You know, they can organize obviously the trials and recruit the patients. And then, of course, outsourced the monitoring of those trials. You know, the blood work, the urine work, whatever it is to their lab business, Okay, so it's a very natural fit. It just has taken a little bit longer for that thesis to unfold, And I think Maybe some people had thought about so initially, so the combination of business returning to normal people going back to the doctor's office is the opportunity to close that valuation gap to historical ranges because again a 12 times earnings their trading any significant discount. Swore they'd normally traded over the past 10 15 years not only relative to themselves their own history but also relative to the S and P 500 relative to their peers. And then, thirdly, sort of the sum of the parts unlocking, you know, we think the two businesses Together or independently, are worth a lot more than her. Being assigned by the market in their combined forms. So Laboratory Corporation of America, I think is a value play in what has become a value sector. And I think as we come out of the election cycle has hopefully the economy starts to pick up at some point in 2021 that you're going to look at lab court and say why the heck wasn't buying it at 12 times earnings Take a look at that one..
