It's the Little Things

"For want of a nail, the shoe was lost for want of a shoe. The horse was lost for want of a horse. The rider was lost for want of a writer the message was lost for want of the message the battle was lost for want of a battle, the kingdom was lost. Small things can have reverberating effects on history both good and bad. In fourteen fifty three, the great walled city of Constantinople fell it had withstood sieges for eleven hundred years. It had held off fire from the then state of the art cannons for weeks. The Byzantine said even Ford soldiers trying to tunnel under the wall autumn Turks were finally able to overrun the great city because someone left the door open. One of the many gates in the fourteen miles of wall had been left open during the night and the Ottomans flooded in. Killing Constantine the eleventh in the battle and bringing an end to the eastern Roman Empire. My Name's Moxy and this is your brain on facts. It was a freezing Christmas night in Trenton. New Jersey during the revolutionary war. The English Colonel Johann Gottlieb Rall. Commander. Of a mercenary infantry regiment of fourteen hundred has seen soldiers from Germany sat down to a good supper and an evening of entertainment. He and his men were celebrating their recent victories over George Washington's volunteer army, and of course, the Christmas holiday. Safe from the bitter cold and the pelting sleet inside a wealthy merchants home that they had commandeered. They relaxed safe in the assumption that no one in their right mind would possibly try to cross the Delaware River at night in a blinding winter storm. Someone challenged role to a game of chess, and before long he was deep in tactics and strategy. There was a knock at the door. And exhausted young. Messenger boy came in bearing a note from loyalist farmer. It's important to remember that about a third of colonists still consider themselves to be British and didn't want the revolution. Raw paid the boy little notice took the note and put it in his coat pocket without opening it. That pocketed piece of paper would cost him and the war effort nearly. Two hours earlier and ten miles away. Washington's men had begun being ferried across the icy Delaware. River. It took over ten hours to get all twenty four hundred men over to the New Jersey side. The conditions were so adverse five men froze to death. Then began the arduous march to Trenton in the dark. The plan had been to attack the town from all sides before dawn, but the troops didn't arrive until eight am. During the attack which lasted only an hour forty of the German. Henson's were killed and the remaining thousand surrendered. Colonel was mortally wounded. When his body was found the unopened note warning of Washington's crossing was still in his pocket. If role had read it, he would surely have had his gross of professional soldiers prepared. He allowed his pride and the weather to lull him into thinking his enemy was not a threat. Had he won the battle he may well have killed George Washington James Madison James Monroe John Marshall Aaron Burr and Andrew. Hamilton The. Second, most common premise in alternate history circles behind what if Germany won World War Two is what if the south one the American civil war? Two pieces of paper dropped in a farmer's field almost brought that about. Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Whose statue in the middle of my hometown of Richmond, Virginia has recently been given the historical context. It's so sorely needed. In the form of tons of. Graffiti. Issued Special Order one ninety one during the Maryland campaign before the Battle of Antietam. In the order lead divided his army, delineating the routes and roads to be taken and the timing for the units to reconvene. Adjutant Robert H Chilton penned copies of the letter endorsed them in Lee's name. Staff. Officers distributed the copies to various confederate generals. General Thomas Stonewall Jackson in turn copied the document for one of his subordinates, major general, D H Hill who was to exercise independent command as the rearguard. A Union soldier Corporal Barton W Mitchell of the twenty seven. Th Indiana volunteers found two pieces of paper bundled with three cigars as he marched across a farm in Maryland an area recently vacated by Hill and his men after they had camped there. The order provided the Union army with valuable information, concerning the army of Northern Virginia's movements and campaign plans. Upon receiving lease lost order. Major General George McClellan leading the Union army of the Potomac proclaimed. Here is a piece of paper with which if I cannot whip Bob Ely, I will be willing to go home. He immediately moved his army in hopes of foiling lease battle plans. When Lee heard a copy of special order one, ninety, one was missing he. He knew his scattered army was vulnerable and rushed to reunite his units Antietam Creek near Sharp's Berg. Lee's troops arrived tired hungry and many were sick. The Battle of Antietam, would go down as the bloodiest battle of the American civil war with casualties recorded as twenty, three, thousand dead wounded, which was usually as good as dead or unaccounted for over the course of the half day battle. That's nearly two thousand soldiers in our one every two seconds. When night fell both sides ceased fire together, their dead and wounded. The next day Lee began the painstaking job of moving his ravage troops back Virginia. Here, some scholars argue another solitary decision had far reaching consequences. Despite having the advantage. McClellan. Allowed Lee to retreat without resistance. From his point of view, he'd accomplished his mission by forcing Lee's troops from Maryland and preventing confederate win on union soil. President, Lincoln however thought McClellan missed a great opportunity to potentially end the war three years earlier than it ultimately would.

Officials battle online misinformation along with wildfires

"Are these historically large wildfires continue to rage out west fifteen people have already died a whopping four million acres already devastated across California as well as Oregon where you can see right here why the mayor there declared a state of emergency, the governor also publicly pleading. For the trump administration to support its governmental emergency response officials on the ground, say Donald trump failing them through fashion. Some critics compare his sort of public denial of even admitting what's going on with the wildfires that posture to of course, is deceitful approach to cove it. Who reports today are the things are even worse than all of that because right wing conspiracy theories supported publicly by Donald, trump are leading to dangerous activity. Again, we're living in a time where misinformation can be dangerous to your health and officials are warning. They're getting flooded with false phone calls fanned by Q. Not which incorrectly try to blame the fires on trump's perceived opponents. Translation what happens on facebook doesn't always stay on facebook a real world emergency political propaganda is making it harder for these firefighters to get the real information warnings they need as they go out and do their work and risk their lives. That's why sheriff's departments are pleading with people with messages like this just stop spreading rumors stop calling nine one one with political pranks. They say it has now gotten to the point where it is hampering their bandwidth to respond to the fires in real emergencies. It's twenty twenty. So sometimes, we have to state the obvious around here. Do not call nine, one one with Q. Non trumpy fake news propaganda. You do have the right to say whatever you want. Typing it up on the Internet you do not have the right to deceitfully thwart firefighting in the middle of this very real crisis for those calling from the West Coast some of these calls have been traced. If you need to think about it like this. Misinformation is expensive in the house you save could be your own. As mentioned, we're thrilled to have married trump live in the hour but I want to begin with some of our analysts, Jason, Johnson professor of politics at Morgan, State University and Katty Kay Washington anchor for BBC News. Good evening to both you. Evening Jason There's much talk about misinformation and people don't like lying even when it's just verbal if you want to be that specific. But given these twin crises, your view of the cost of this kind of misinformation. Rex It's massive. I'm in California right now and the difficulty the difficulty that local officials are having in managing people when it comes to these wall fires is immense and is partially because accused on, it's partially because the president basically sort of thumbs his nose that these sorts of Issues v rate of destruction that is happening out here. Basically, the size of central park is being burned every other day in northern California Oregon Central Park. Every other day is being burned devastated. varies a haze over the sky on a regular basis at the bottom. Of A pool, you can see ash settling after every single night. So the idea that people are wasting public resources with crazy conspiracy theories because they think that the fires were created by you know five G. or invading Muslims or George Soros doesn't help the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of people were either going to be out of their homes or not able to stay safely in their homes. During the time, we have a pandemic where rescuing people in putting them into shelters is all the more difficult. So yeah, this is propaganda that's Live when trump lies people are dying. Well. Caddy at the White House has often tried to reposition the Cova conversation in the election as well. This hit everywhere. This is global thing. it seems that this week there is a rightful focus and scrutiny on the president's leadership on his honesty on his approach, which is relevant. As, you go into election about who you want to continue to deal with this crisis or do you want to change the commander in chief? Yell the the virus has hit everywhere but my fourteen year old daughter is an online schooling here in Washington. Her friend in France in class. A. Friend in London is in class her friend in China is in plus her friend in Senegal. is in class and a friend in Germany is in class they're all going to school. And the reason they're going to school is because those countries have handled this better. So that's a direct comparison and in a globalised world. Our children here in the United States make no mistake about it that losing out because those other kids are in class going to school at advancing while orchids not advancing. So we're kicking this down to the next generation as well but. We elect leaders to be able to walk and Chew Gum at the same time. It is totally possible that you can give people a facts that you can trust the American people with the facts of something it is at also be inspirational and motivational and lift them up with a plan and show leadership. Those two things are not mutually exclusive and I think that's what the president is mistaking when he says, he didn't want people to panic and so he downplayed the virus. And gatty talk about how that stacks up in a global context that I think is very interesting to remember, and then how people are receiving these messages reporter. Jim Acosta spoke. To some people going to the trump rally take a look. Our about him because there's no. It's a it's a fake pandemic created to destroy the United. States of America. The president said the Bob Woodward there is a virus but corona virus that it is devil that's his opinion. Chatty. Where do you start i? Mean you stop by asking all of our leaders to come out with consistent clear accurate honest messaging when I really felt for Anthony. FAUCI. In that interview because I've interviewed g and he is so careful not to wade into political waters where there's going to be a difference between him and the president because he said that will be the only story and he is trying to get out the public health story doesn't WANNA make it a political story about. A disagreement he clearly feels now he has to set a Mauka. He has to wait into the politics of this and say, no when the President says, we are turning a corner. We're not actually turney. We're in this for the long haul because when the president says, we're turning a corner when he says, we're about to get over this or that is magically going to disappear what happens that guy doesn't wear a mosque when he attends a rally because he thinks it's not there. That's the risk. Door Jason. Trump can say you know he can see the light at the end of the tunnel. All we once it's a train right it's a train coming at us. We are about to head to fall which is flu season. This is a time where you have kids going back to school but you have people who have to shelter in place more because it's cold you can't eat outside and that makes us Much more difficult and I think are the real danger here is that as we recognize that the president is grotesquely incompetent, right easies driven by sort of racial malice and paying off his friends and everything else like that. At the base of all of this, we cannot forget to key things. One that the president is still trying to steal the election with the post office that you still have. Right. Wing Supreme. Courts in Wisconsin right now that are trying to people get absentee ballots. It's you have the president, the Republican Party suing in Iowa to prevent people from getting their absentee ballots that he's still trying to steal the election at the same time that you have literally millions of. Americans. Now, out of work who be out of their homes who are being evicted, which will make it more difficult for them to. Actually vote. So as much as the president is, is a horrible human being and trying to bankrupt this country and pay off his friends and stay in office. He is also doing things isn't competence has disrupted the ability of regular people remove him from office in a democratic way. We can't ever lose sight that because we can't get rid of him everything that's happening. Now we'll be ten times worse by nature.

Philadelphia first responder remembers 9/11: We would do it all again if we had to

"Philadelphia, where some of the first outsiders to arrive at ground zero to help 19 years ago on this day. Italy's Kristen Joe Hansen has one of their stories now retired police Sergeant Greg Massey was working in the 9 11 Emergency Operation Center in Philadelphia when the first plane hit within minutes. We actually witnessed a second aircraft take the tower, so he knew this was not an accident when the attack seemed to have stopped then police commissioner the late John Timoney, a former commander of the NYPD, sent Massey and a team to ground zero to help with recovery efforts when they found somebody these air horns with sound. Nobody would stop. It was actually kind of a solemn moral procession. He will remove the victim or what was left of the victim off ground zero and moving into a makeshift more Now he like thousands of other first responders, who went to ground zero struggle with the 9 11 related illness. I really believe that I can answer for all the responders. If it happened today, we would go immediately to do what we can do. Kristen Joe Hansen, K Y. W News Radio Cleveland police

"Had to be honest with you. I missed a lot of that video, because I had trouble getting past this. When did you start being humble? Right Cam says he is getting tired of being humble. Are you telling me that what we have seen from you for the last ten years? That was that? Was You passing for humble? Man This is going to be home areas. I think it was just. Him talking himself up getting hype in that moment and I think what is referred to as the past couple of months where he was quiet, when no one was offering him a job when he seemed to stoop to the point where he's taking the League minimum to play for the Patriots, like that is what he thinks passes that humility I think is not speaking out, not calling everybody out when the panthers cut him late into free agency. He didn't say anything to them like that is what he means by being humble. Maybe he means being quiet, but to be honest. Like I was feel it. Cam got me a little hype. Hype, he got. Everybody fired up to the end. All that nonsense about hyenas and antelope I know is nonsense, but I loved it 'cause. I'm still football player I know you guys are journalists, and you're not. You don't relate you. Don't understand what that got me hype and I'm really ready to see cam out there and be the kill Eddie said he was wait a minute i. did not realize that like that stuff got you in that way? I thought that she was a little bit above it in a way that you care. You didn't realize that you get caught up with him running through every animal in the cracker box. I mean I saw. This pseudo intellectual exterior is a WHO gives hype about Hyena Talk, but my point to any patriots fan that would take issue with this is to your point Bo-. Like what have you been watching over the last ten years? Because if you're only relationship to Cam, Newton, or understanding of him was from what you see in the Dannon yogurt commercials than you clearly have not been paying attention. Attention to CAM. Newton is I would also say Let's see a star quarterback who is using a chip on his shoulder to drive him on the field. Sound familiar sounds a lot like Tom Brady and what he did for twenty plus year, nobody had any problem with it because it was relegated to screaming and all the history onyx on the field while he would act like. Of the year off of it, this is Cam. Embrace it also you know. They're all waiting in Boston to rehash the debt. Worsen part it's the worst. Strikes is the city that lives and nothing more than jumping on the dance obvious too late. Well, let's talk about passwords again and these peptides Ray Lewis. Have you over there ready to crab four game? I mean I caught right I. I call right towards the end of his career different. It was a different type of speech that he was given out then then early positives career. They wasn't wasn't quite hitting the same I. Don't think..

"From the Center for Investigative Reporting and P R X. This is reveal veal. I'm Elliot when news first broke. The president trump talked to the new Ukrainian president about investigating Joe Biden trump unsurprisingly surprisingly took to his favourite medium twitter fire back a controversy tweeting quote now that the Democrats and the fake news media have gone bust on every other of their witch hunt schemes they are trying to start one just as ridiculous as the others calling it. The Ukraine witch hunt while at the same time trying to protect sleepy Joe. Oh Biden will fail again. We've seen this play out before trump attacks the media is spewing fake news or claiming alternative facts which can drown out negative news coverage but attacking the media isn't the only way trump uses social media since first launching his presidential campaign trump has has fired off countless tweet storms that are often so outrageous they become the leading news story thing about the height of the summer trump tweeted that that four congresswomen of color known collectively as the squad should go back to where they came from who tweeted Sunday should go totally broken and in crime infested places from which they can week or so later trump called the city of Baltimore a quote Disgusting Rat in Rhode invested mess trump remains unapologetic about those tweets here at reveal we held a big staff meetings and talk about how the media was covering trump and many of us agreed depots included that he's tweets about the congresswoman were racist. We also talked about how the media pivots away from other big stories when trump fires up his twitter feed my colleague Will Carlos has been taking a look at the stories that have been buried and largely forgotten and he joins me now hey well. Hey Al so let's go back to July July when President Trump tweeted about the squad in Baltimore what else was going on in the news. It was a pretty disastrous week for the trump administration. I mean for for example you had a big Paul coming out saying that trump was trailing his democratic rivals. You had trump's labor secretary having a step down after it was revealed that he was heavily involved in creating a plea deal for sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. It was the same week jury member that disastrous visit is it by the vice president pence to the detention facility in Texas where he's Kinda touring it especially a photo op and it was just a disaster forum so there's all this like negative embarrassing stuff happening at the same time but unite both know what we're talking about right yeah yeah the latest tweet storm so you went back and looked over the president's twitter feed. What did you find right well again and again and again we saw the same patent play out the the some negative or embarrassing new story that starts to break and immediately hidden by a just an offensive or an outrageous tweet that the president sends and then the media endlessly discusses so back to the tweets about the squad during that time was there one issue that really got overshadowed so this is is really the best example that we found story that should have gotten a lot more attention than it did? The president had vetoed bipartisan bills that would have limited the sal of weapons to Saudi Arabia to be used in the ongoing war in Yemen. It's a lot more of a complicated story to follow than what trump is stirring up on his twitter feed but it's a really important story yeah definitely is and now recent weeks. Yemen has gotten a lot more attention. That's after minority group that called the WHO `this took credit for boming a Saudi oilfield which knocked out half of the kingdom's oil output. Not many people were worried about whether that gas prices in the US are GonNa go up but you know back in July. This story was not getting a lot of traction right so now we're going to dedicate some time to it. Will you've been spending the last couple weeks digging into the story. What have you found well? I've been interviewing folks who've been following this all along and one of those people's journalists called Rohan Shaef who's been to Yemen women several times to cover the conflict and she lived there for awhile. It's almost like screaming in to avoid and that was what it was like. Reporting on Yemen and walking on these asteroids Rwanda one is now based in London. She leads the coverage at Belene cat an online investigative side. She's really good at breaking down the conflict in how it's is changed what the conflict is now is incredibly different to what it was four to five years different allies the the shifting allegiances of all of that has drastically changed over the course of the conflict but it is always incredibly good to start right at the beginning in order to understand don how polarized this conflict is doesn't seven per justice all across the country in Yemen called for the housing of the solid who had been a president fifty-three is they did so successfully and by two thousand twelve he signed off into his deputy had he who is now the president of Yemen to take his place now one would have assumed that the transition were to have been peaceful however it was anything but that so that was during the Arab Spring and the next development was that there was this huge rift between hardy not the new president who is backed by Saudi Arabia and the WHO who have support from Iran the WHO are fighting for religious minority group they say being being discriminated against well that rift between the Hutus and the new president quickly kind of metastasized into something much broader it changed from a civil war to conflict with a lot of influence from outside players especially given the attack on the oil facility inside Arabia. I think it's becoming more and more a proxy war. It wasn't a proxy war when this all begun so yeah at this point the two big players are Saudi Arabia on one side backed by the the US and on the other side. This is what makes the conflict in Yemen incredibly difficult to report on all these miniscule changes that require a lot of context and a lot of background knowledge in order to understand the significance in the current moment just to understand correctly the the United States states is mainly involved by supplying weapons and logistics. We don't have any troops on the ground or anything like that. Yeah that that's right and and that's probably one of the reasons why this hasn't sort of taken roots so strongly as a story in America but you know we are providing the bombs that are killing people since two thousand fifteen the US has been supporting the Saudi led coalition with things like targeting assistance and at least until recently mid air refueling you've got companies like Raytheon and Lockheed Martin that are supplying the bombs that are heading heading to the conflict and we're one shave has actually sent evidence of that firsthand one of my main roles when I was in Yemen was to document sites where Asterix at a cut to an arbitrary standard and out of the one hundred thirteen that I investigated about eighty of them had a US munition finishing tied to them and that alern always gives me the ability to sort of speak to the US's involvement in this so I want to note a couple of things here first of all this wasn't originally trump's war he basically inherited this situation from the Obama Administration and the US says it has legitimate JIM reasons to be involved in this conflict no Yemen's long been a hotbed for terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and so the US has been providing arms and support to Saudi Arabia for more seven four years. What's most concerned? American lawmakers is that those bombs have just been used pretty indiscriminately the Saudis have whether by accident accident or on purpose bombed everything from hospitals to apartment buildings to school buses all using American made weapons. You talked to some people both in Yemen. I'm in and with close ties to the country. So how is this war affecting daily life this radi transformed life in Yemen and one way of telling this story and kind of just how much the country has changed is to think about weddings yeah so my last trip I was sixteen. I was a teenager was summertime every time it was a wedding season so that's Jeon Hakeem who's the CO chair of the Yemeni American Alliance here in the San Francisco Bay area she was born in the US but she visited visited Yemen regularly growing up weddings and Yemen go on for about a week every day. It's a different outfit and dancing in the streets fireworks people our until the middle of the night stores Shut Down Block parties kids food music. It was just a ball along with that of course was before before the war and things today look very different. Joyous occasions like weddings have actually been attacked in strikes. Our families were killed. Hold ultimate. I'm talking about hundreds of whole everyone in skill. That's Nassar Arab. He's a local journalist and filmmaker who we reached in Sanaa inau the country's constitutional capital. He's covered this conflict for the New York Times and other publications bomb you while you are in the middle of the winning killing the bride and bridegroom and everyone all everyone this is what happened this is what it's like and also funerals you when you are carried the they did body to the to the grave with hundreds of people gathering and reciting Koran Saudi Arabia came and bombed them and all this has other consequences the UN says that up to twenty million people are dying of starvation in Yemen because of the impact of the war they say it's the worst humanitarian tearing crisis on the planet his John Hockey mcgann. She's the Yemeni American activist here in the bay area. You know if we were to look at a conference hall for example and and there are a hundred people in this conference room seventy five percent of these people do not have anything to eat and then if we multiply that times the population of Yemen which is a little over twenty two million people seventy five percent of Yemen's population are in need of humanitarian tearing assistance right away and nearly half of those that are in need our children so I know it feels like something that's so distant and far away and we just look at numbers and statistics but it's drastic and the need is is dire okay so we started out talking about President trump vetoing these bills to limit arms sales to Saudi Arabia. How much is congress done to try and intervene? You know there have been some efforts in Congress to make an impact and those were like the couple of times where if we were going to talk about Yemen we would talk about it when in two specific bills being discussed and voted on a big one was this bipartisan bill basically pull the US out of the conflict fleet completely back in April. This is important because Yemen faces still a potential famine of millions of people the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. That's Ro Khanna. The Congressman who introduced that first bill and the conflict in Yemen is one of the greatest sources of tension in the Middle East so solving the war in Yemen would do a lot to bringing greater peace to the Middle East and the fact that the Congress came together to pass a Senator Senator Sanders and my war powers resolution to stop a war should have led down the front page of every newspaper but this wasn't on the front page of of every newspaper right. I mean far from it. In this case. It didn't really matter because president trump ended up vetoing the bill right after it was passed and as reset before in July he went on to veto three other bills that would have and more than eight billion dollars in sales to Saudi Arabia normally the win the president vetoes a bill it gets a lot of attention and the media did cover the vetoes but that kind of got lost in the new cycle right I mean there really wasn't a whole lot of public awareness about this..

"Other sifi that's come before this i'm seeing elements of battle star galactica star trek there's nothing in any of this design right off the bat that's making me go ooh this is gonna grabbed me and pulled me in and not only that but it's just underfunded you just look at it as paltry this reminded me of syndicated tv from that time like didn't kevin sorbo have in drama to babylon five like those shows those ones you just never would watch that come on you'll be like ooh this bad i just turn it real quick the friend of mine who turned me onto wing commander was a huge babylon five fan love that show i couldn't get into it i watched a couple up associates but i will say if you go and watch babylon five you think this movie cgi is sad babylon five doesn't even come this close this one it may not be phantom menace level cgi ships but they're decent compared to babylon five no let's be clear however bad babylon five is i'm sure it's worse this is very bad this is not acceptable in nine hundred nine to sit in a movie theater and watch this it is absolutely unacceptable and i was there literally opening night with bated breath could not be more excited to see wing commander on a big screen and the funding is not there it does need more money but only in certain instances is lethal this does not have a cheap field to it roberts deed the best he could with the money he had i mean most of this movie takes place on one ship but i never questioned that ships veracity i never thought the sets looked cheaper than star trek voyager i've got to go against you there every time we're on an interior you can tell they're on a decommissioned battleship from world war two i mean they're literally renting the queen elizabeth no they're actually just in a warehouse they built homeless they must've deconstructed a boat to build a.

"And chris roberts make another film chris roberts is actually now a fairly successful film producer okay he did lucky numbers levin didn't see it but i've heard of it it's okay he also did the nick cage film lord of war k the two thousand four the punisher and he ended up directing some tv series and producing tv series he did transition to a working hollywood career which is success if you are working in hollywood that is success absolutely i mean that's one form of success i mean you don't have to be the one percent if you're not waiting tables you have made if you are actively producing films that we have heard of and you're not begging me to review legs zombie vers then a success in my mind so he did walk away from this yes sure he's not setting the world on fire but he he's making a living he's making more than any of us on the record i say that he making any more wing commander or was this the end of the whole shebang this wasn't the end but video games change they got more expensive the later games he was not involved in because he was in hollywood and then this movie did taint the property i do believe that thing that i knew about this movie was that it was the least impressive science fiction film of nineteen ninety nine and now the box office to reflect it but it is also the first film to have bullet time take that may chicks.

"I often and i think most people look at successive emotion picture based upon how it does at the box office this movie was a success for fox before it ever made a dollar anything at the box office was gravy which is so strange to me because i would say one of the things always kept me from digging to close and figuring out exactly what wing commander was is just the generic nature of its name it tells me nothing wing commander that could be anywhere anytime as long as you're dealing with something that flies yeah at fact it was a sister game to strike commander which was an earth based flight sim in modern day have either one could have gone either way those words poison to me you say flight simulator and i'm reading as far away from the console as i can i just i've never liked them from chuck yeager on i just they're boring to me there too technical and i just i never went to play them as so fox told moyer moyer was there he's like listen we should give this movie more money and more time fox said if you can find somebody who will pay us two million more than we've paid for it will let them have it but we need a two million dollar profit and moyer found someone to do it and he was literally sitting down to sign the contracts when an exact from fox called and said don't sign those papers the movies coming out in six weeks and whereas like you told me if i made the my like i don't care what i told you it's not happening the movies coming out in six weeks we're going to put the fans of menaces second trailer in front of it that's all this movie needs and it's on.

"Chris blair played by freddie prints junior here they actually gave him the very uncreative call sign of maverick i wonder where they got that i'm surprised they didn't have a goose i'm not entirely sure they didn't yeah they had a turkey so no they logically decided to start over i mean in the first wing commander game you're dropped into the middle of the war just like star wars you never see the first shots fired in the war but when commander the movie coming out in nineteen ninety nine now the movie i was most excited for nine hundred ninety nine was the phantom menace but i honestly thought wing commander could be better and i would certainly thinking both of them would be better than that matrix piece of crap nineteen ninety nine big year for scifi the prequel to begin the matrix iron giant galaxy quest and this is the one you're most excited about or at least as excited about as star wars well it that this movie changed my life and i am not lying let me tell you about this so stewart you've known me for a long time chur when i went into college i was interested in being a television or filmmaker primarily a writer i was an english major or as a communications major of tv production classes film classes when i got out of school could get a job and tv or radio or get a better job with computers that i was good at so i took computer job and i just worked at played games as i've talked about where i could just be at work and play duke nukem all the time well i was following chris roberts career and chris roberts was a game designer games were becoming more full motion video more actors were getting in on them phantasmagoria is one of my all time favorite fm v games go find that and play that if you wanna go to horror game the first one the second one event chris roberts is now directing film and i'm looking at john romero from doom and he was talking about making films and i'm like son of a bitch game designers the next towers i'm good to go to school and get a programming degree to back door my way to hollywood i'm going to become a game designer at then i'm gonna make films based on my.

"Symon this movie and it had an eight million dollar filming budget and so chris roberts game designer felt that he was chris roberts director and started shopping around wing commander the movie and it wasn't that unheard of wing commander i was reading the novels in the nineties there was an entire expanded universe of novels which then degraded down into novelization of gives it's hard to believe but they actually novelist games i don't get it i read some of them the gabriel knight games i loved so i read the books that i'm like yet i played that then they novelist wing commander three and four and i'm like yet i watched them he slowly rolled his thumb over the deep pad and pressed the button wing commander also had an animated series in nineteen ninety six on usa i have watched it back in the day i re watched it for this review it's great great it has mark hamill and all of the cast from the video game doing voices and it's like they're kind of ret conning it's retelling the events of wing commander one and two but in a way that fits better with part three when they started changing things up a little i watched it again and i didn't have much memory of watching it on usa i thought it was going to be in for thirteen episodes of gi joe where everybody's ejecting from their fighter as they fight this thing had an arc it had death it had morning of characters it had some good guys who were turning evil and foreshadowing things that would happen in the game that's series is really actually solid i didn't expect to like it as much as i did but i ended up watching every single episode.

"He's in demand he's considered a hot property again but in the nineties mark hamill was kind of not doing so hot and then malcolm mcdowell who also i mean fire starter too but you know malcolm mcdowell tanker oh sure john rise davies tom wilson biff for back to the future oh yeah i think there were some curiosity for actors of a certain type to explore video games everyone heard it was the future so that you were going to act in a game it sounded edgy revolutionary i could see certain people being drawn to that and yes some people will do anything and of course there was porn star ginger lynn allen also in here as one of the love interest but what i loved about the wing commander games even before this was there was a story line where you could lose a mission and still play it just all of a sudden the war took a turn for the worse because still find a path to victory and the which person you went out with as your wing man really really mattered because they all had different ai and maniac he was truly insane he was like cracking up from the pressure he would do really stupid shit that would get you killed so i really got into these characters they mixed them up a little bit it was biff from back to the future playing maniac as just more of a petulant jerk in the mark hamill games but they had a three million dollar filming budget to get all these people together film against green screen and have a movie that was then punctuated with you hopping in the cockpit and having fights and it was the first time i wasn't very good they changed the engine for wing commander three i actually just had a friend cup over all the time and place why i could watch the movie in between the missions because there was no youtube where i could just go see all the cut scenes and then wing commander four came out and it was even more of a movie it was almost entirely story based missions actually felt like an afterthought oh yeah every so often we have to have a flight.

"Major star wars fan who saw a new hope it it's i the africa run became obsessed with it and when he was creating a video game it actually helped him to rip off star worse because video games do better if they remind you of movies and so in nineteen ninety when he came out with wing commander the entire game and i showed you a little of it stewart's but it's a flight simulator so i what i showed you it was ported to intendo the controls were crap but i was using a flight stick back in the day and fighting the kill rossi and in addition to just being a fun space flight simulator x wing tai fighter were where you had to balance your shields and complete your missions it had a couple of things that they never replicated properly in next winger typhi the i was chris roberts developed several storylines for this war against the kill roffe which is a race of cat people every so often in the early games you'd see them and they did look just like felines in the later games they made them a little bit more lion ish almost wookey yeah you played the game stressed no but i'm kind of a stewart like it always kinda was in my peripheral because it did have so much of a star wars feel to it that i was never sure if it was star wars related or not but yeah like some of the visuals i remember so star wars nineteen ninety four i remember going to save them s club with a friend of mine to by the exclusive edition of wing commander three heart of the tiger it came in a film reel container why would a video game on cd coming film real container because it was a movie and a flight sim it was starring mark hamill as the main character from the first two games chris blair was his name in the first two you could name him whatever you wanted i mean the guy that played trickster on the flash it's hard to believe these days he just got his star on the hollywood walk of fame he.
