The Impossible Disappearance of Brian Shaffer

"At one fifteen. Am the security camera posted outside. The bar caught. Brian clinton meredith riding up the escalator and extensively heading for the ugly tuna celona forty minutes later at one fifty five. Brian can be seen again on the same security camera chatting with a couple of women out side the bar two security guards stand a few feet away most likely getting ready for the bar crowd to leave after last call at two. Am honestly even thinking about being at a bar at two am makes me tired on the security camera footage. Brian can be seen walking toward the entrance of the bar. But the actual entrance of the bar itself is out of frame as the drunken horrid of college. Students poured out of the bar at closing time. Clint and meredith waited outside for bryant. They called him on his cellphone but he didn't pick up in clinton back inside and check the bathroom but he wasn't there. Clinton meredith then made the assumption that brian had already left and hadn't told them folks. Can we please normalize not leaving your friends at bars. Just because you can't get a hold of them like unless they explicitly said you go ahead. I'll stay here and or they're not like incoherently drunk. Don't leave without your friend. Who gave you know warning that they were going somewhere. Well that's not. How clinton and meredith handle the situation. They assumed nothing was wrong and left But the next morning no one had heard from. Brian girlfriend tried calling him. His father tried calling him. He didn't pickup and then on monday morning. Brian was a no show at the airport for his flight. To miami with alexis by this point nobody had heard from him for almost forty eight hours. "So paul your introduction. To the gay bar scene was in columbus ohio for young man exploring his sexuality that must have been quite a memorable experience. What bar was it. And what was it like for you. Young man well. I grew up in a small town in central ohio. I did not even really know what the word gay meant. When i was growing up. I went to a catholic school. So my first introduction to the whole concept of homosexuality was in religion class and you can imagine the spin that they put on it not not a positive one so i grew up with a lot of shame like a lot of other gay people And it took me until. I was twenty one years old before i came out and i had just graduated from college and was really eager to find my community and that was before you know there were there. There were a whole lot of ways to connect online. the internet. i mean was there but it really wasn't. It wasn't what it is today so the way that you met people in the queer community was to to go out at night and i had a friend that took me to my first gay bar. Which was this kind of dive bar in. Downtown columbus called the the eagle think probably every every town has a eagle. So i've heard so many different people say they they went to the eagle and it was always in a different city. But we had our eagle and i just remember how cool it was to go in there Be around other people like myself to have the kind of music that i liked playing. That was a i. I'd always felt so strange when i was growing up. You know. I love listening to all all my favorite divas and nobody else that i knew had any of those same interests so i felt so weird in alone then suddenly i go into this bar. The little dive bar in downtown columbus and i found my people and i loved it.

Juan Sebastián Elcano Was Actually the First Person to Circumnavigate the Earth

"Ferdinand magellan is often credited with being the first person to circumnavigate the earth. However this isn't true. I don't mean this in the same way that columbus wasn't the first european in the americas because the vikings made it to newfoundland. I i mean magellan never circumnavigated the earth at all period. The magellan voyage did not set out travel around the world. The purpose of the mission was to find a western route to the spice islands. Or what we now call indonesia. They set out in fifteen nineteen only twenty seven years after columbus first landed in the bahamas in fourteen. Ninety two the magellan voyage really just set out to achieve with the columbus expedition tried to to reach asia by sailing west. The difference was that this time they knew there was a gigantic landmass in between europe and asia. And this time they were gonna go around it. Magellan was portuguese so many people assume that his expedition was sponsored by portugal. But that wasn't the case. It was actually a spanish expedition sponsored by king charles. The first the spanish wanted the western route because portugal had a monopoly on the eastern route around africa in through the indian ocean. The expedition consisted of five ships with supplies. Last two full years the total crew consisted of two hundred and seventy minute at the start mostly spanish but with crew from many different countries. The expedition took a major toll. The first ship was lost in fifteen twenty in a storm in argentina. The second ship was abandoned in what is now called the straits of magellan. Several months later the third ship was scuttled in the philippines and may fifteen twenty one because of lack of crew and the fourth was lost in indonesia in december on april twenty seven. Fifteen twenty one. Magellan himself was killed in the philippines by the natives of the island where they landed. He was surrounded and killed with spears. This left the expedition. In a quandary. Its leader was dead. Over half the crew were dead and they were on the other side of the world. They sailed around without any purpose for about six months. And eventually the crew selected one wants fashion elcano a spaniard to be the captain of the last remaining in smaller ships of the fleet. The victoria they decided to return home via the western route and september. Six fifteen twenty two. The ship arrived back in spain at the same port. They left almost three years

Talking About Chauvin With a Columbus Police Officer

"We are here with mike in officer from columbus ohio. And today we're going to be touching on the chauvin verdict as well as the bryan shooting. That has happened recently. Mike thanks so much for joining us. Fan thanks for having me. We're super happy to have you on This is obviously been a pretty hectic couple weeks. yeah yeah even longer than that probably way So it's really cool to get your perspective on some of these things. We've had a previous episode where we brought a couple of police officers on and we discussed george floyd and a couple other incidents that were going on at that time but yeah no just really happy to have you on happy to have your perspective. Thank you thank you. So let's just jump right in With the makhaya bryant shooting so that one is probably most. I guess most relevant most present in most relevant right now What what were your initial thoughts. What were your initial reactions. When when you saw this whole thing was happening okay. So i was actually on duty when it happened so the call went out over the radio and like whenever there's an officer involved shooting like bite the entire. Everyone is working knows. I usually we re we operate in zones. And i are radio. Traffic is divided by zones. But when officers involved it goes out across zones so we hear there's an officer involved shooting and then like kinda. We're kinda like everyone else. We're just waiting for the details. And i hear that there is not only a a woman. Because that's kind of rarer than you know mail. yeah so but then it's a teenager So i mean honestly the first thing that popped in my head was like there has to be more to the story in just showbiz shoot. Because i don't know that. I mean there's this misconception that like after trigger happy and everything but especially in this day and age the last thing you wanna do is even be an unjustified shooting

"Sixtytwo homeowner to get into a home and never have mortgage payments and really by twice the home they thought they could afford i'm a big proponent it's called the heck him for purchase i'm a big proponent because i know that for many central ohio hone homeowners it they are selling a two hundred thousand dollar home or three hundred thousand dollar home and realizing that that dust doesn't by uh the the in their downsize as simply not enough money to get what they want so there are products like that that are out uh out of four of fifty five or sixty two and over again we talk about those at downsize kathy cairo's here a downsize columbus dot com is the website if you'd like to register for their seminar which is coming up september ten th at the hilton eastern from one thirty to 530 uh you know it's funny because i imagine uh one of the things that people think about his as they get older they have different priorities i know for example we've always lived in the neighborhood where taxes are very high but that we will we said that's fine because our kids have fantastic schools so that's something that uh one of the things that you would think about maybe going to a a school district that doesn't have such high taxes as you get older if you don't need to use the schools uh what are some of the other things people think about like that absolutely mark in fact we have people who are living in gorgeous paid homes but have twelve and thirteen hundred a month and taxes yeah and so you have to ask the question why am i living here in paying money into a school system that i stopped using thirty years ago so what we find our our customers are looking for first of all they don't wanna live far from what they're used to they want to be close to their uh their doctors their kids they're shopping their friends all of the things they're accustomed to an end there we help them identify those locations secondly there are quite a few areas that are geographically in the area there used to but they might be the columbus school district.

"On sunday afternoon a september tenth at that event marked we will have nine experts speakers we have divided the downsizing equation into five categories that we've learned that homeowners are concerned about and they are legal medical residential emotional and found a financial that last decision to to downsize encompasses all of those we'll have experts in all of those areas some of the top professionals in columbus will be there speaking on their expertise and then we have thirty vendors we have people who all have services that help that homeowner downsize they'll be there to talk about what they do and once again to register where two people go downsize columbus dot com that's pretty easy to remember catholic cairo's our guest today and uh what's a break down some of these are the five topics again the five are they are legal financial residential emotional and read those back to me mark method i say medical medical there you go i knew i was missing one you know it's interesting because uh emotional you've been in the house for thirty or forty years you've raised your children there it's hard to lead but you've got forty years worth a stuff in there to absolutely that we find that is the number one problem people have it is not the sale of the home and at this point many people financially whether your money or not they kind of have their assets at medical they have their doctors and that sort of thing but we find that most difficult step homeowners have is saying goodbye to that house and it is not just brick and steel and windows in a roof often it is where they raise their kids it's where they had birthday parties and holiday events and graduations and and not only is it emotionally a very difficult to walk away but you're right it's many times forty years of stuff and what we find is that the is a special.

"Good morning and welcome to another edition of columbus concerns a public affairs presentation of north american broadcasting i'm mark news thanks so much for joining us today with us on the program today from downsize columbus is kathy cairo and kathy thanks for being with us thank you mark good to be here now i know that you've got a big event coming up on september tenth but before we get into that tell me what is downsize columbus downsize columbus mark is the recognition that we're all getting old thanks a lot and now i'm a realtor and i do a lot of seminars for my clients i've done for years homebuyer home sellers seminars and when the central ohio was coming out of the recession which was around two thousand twelve i began thinking that perhaps a unserved market was that homeowner who needed to go from the big house to the smaller home or to patio or ranchore condo or a whatever the last step in how using was and they had put off doing that because of the recession because of the value of their home so i decided in the spring of two thousand thirteen to do a seminar just for those downsizing homeowners and i naively thought that that groups main concern was selling their home only to find out you know a dozen or more seminars later that that i was way off on that but it's turned into a seminar to teach homeowners and end kinda give them all the pieces of the puzzle to downsize anti your next us seminars coming up on september tenth correct it's called downsize columbus it is a free of event but you must register because we do tend to sell i say sell out it doesn't cost anything but by fire code we can only have so many human beings in there so we have to shut it down and every year we have to shut it down before the event 'cause we we get a our top headcount but it's at the hilton at eastern um it is from one thirty to five thirty.

"Is there a way to do it not going through like the department motor vehicles yes so so we have about ninety seven percent of the ohioans who registered you register at the pnv but if you don't want to do that or if you don't go to the pm the you can go to our website lifeline of ohio dot org and you can register online or he can just m caller office and we can male you at a brochure so the pnv does hold the ohio donor registry so when you go to our website to sign up we turn everything over to the be mvp same with if you mail a brochure in it goes to the envy so just so you know that little distinction but um we we do get people who just simply want to fill out their form and were fine with that and we will get that to you a again your a website is lifeline of ohio dot org imagine all the questions at people have our answered their on the website zaf in more a talk a little bit about uh be you know medical technology and breakthroughs change constantly and and a it's almost a routine now to do certain of transplants of organs to save people's lives what all can you take from a body so it's it's really incredible and fantastic and so one oregon donor can save eight lives through organ donations so that's the donation of two kidneys and lungs liver kid these pancreas and small intestine so m one oregon donor can give eight oregon's one organ donor may only be able to give four oregon's um but we don't we try to maximize the gift so whatever person can give we make sure that they're able to give that and then one tissue donor can save more than 50 people save and he'll.

"After i die can i still have a normal funeral can i still have an open casket that kind of thing of course you can so we say that if if an open casket was possible prior to donation it is possible after donation so we all know that there are just some instances where an open casket is impossible so that simply means that um because of the the mechanism of death how you died um it wouldn't be possible to have an open casket so that means after donation you wouldn't have to you wouldn't be able to have an open casket um but donation doesn't interfere with funeral um funeral plans it doesn't extend the process um we make sure to follow the family's wishes so if the family wants to have an open casket we make sure to work with them to find out you know what kind of clothing the person will be wearing just so that we can make a hundred and ten percent sure that any of our surgical incisions or on tissue recovery is all covered so there is absolutely no delay there's no cost to your family for donation um and a it doesn't affect funeral at all or guest on the program today's jessica peterson with lifelock of ohio uh they of course accorded all the organ donations in thirty seven counties here in central ohio and a couple of counties west virginia as well and jessica it's a big job uh let's say that i want to become an organ donor.

"I'm not going to be treated as well because they want my organs oh yeah we we hear it out on a lorry allott allott in fact my brotherinlaw who is you know highly educated um knows his staff he is determined that if he's ever in an accident and they know he's an organ donor um that he will be led to die and that is just simply not the case um when medical professionals arrive on the scene of an accident or if you rush to the emergency room and they look it the medical professionals look at your driver's license they're looking to find out what you're namus so that they can find him next of kin um it doesn't matter if you have that little red heart on your license are not the really dealing with saving your life and finding out who and the heck you are um donation only occurs after death has been pronounced so the um the hospital portion and the donation portion are very separate now earlier and mention that we will get calls if there is an imminent death and that is if the person um is going through like the last rounds of brain death testing um we'll be called in so there to separate you know there two separate care teams the medical professionals emts doctors nurses surgeons they've taken an oath to save your life um um until all of those measures have been exhausted they are working to save you when those measures have been exhausted and donation as possible then donation professionals are called in we get that question all the time but they're there to help you that that acl professionals are there to help you are guess another question that though we heard there that i and i think probably comes a pretty often the is that if i become an organ donor.

"Our guest today from lifeline of ohio their website is lifeline of ohio dot org tell me a little bit about the i know there are a lot of myths they're always have been about organ donation none i think most of them have been cleared up over time but up i guess one of the myths is that uh there's a religious a ban on uh you know certain religions have a ban on organ donation is that does that true match here the fact is that all major us religions think that donation is a final charitable active getting so there's um really practically no religions that same no organ donation is a bad thing um but we do encourage you to talk to your faith leader if you have questions you know if if you're catholic or your jewish or you know you're muslim ask your faith leader get their statement on it and then make an educated decision um you can also go to our website lifeline of ohio dot org and we have a faith pay each that outlines every single religion um there is and their statement on what they feel about organ eye and tissue donations so it's it's very comprehensive or noah several years ago we did a call in show here with some one from i don't know if it was your organization one of them but one of the questions that actually came up a couple of times was that if i'm very sick and i'm an organ donor.

"Uh hey i really think organ donation is poured it important what do you think it's really really crucial a have them on the same page it's it's doesn't have to be a long indepth conversation it can really be a statement or or question asking them how they feel um but it's it's a really important piece to the puzzle all our guess a one of the questions a lot of people problem we have is mi healthy enough to be an organ donor am i young enough him or you know or my too old be an organ donor what's what's the answer those questions uh my gosh we get those questions all the time um so to address the i'm too old to donate organs the oldest organ donor in the united states was just shy of his ninety third birthday and he donated his liver to a seventy year old and believe that happened in texas on the oldest tissue donor donor was in scotland and they were a hundred in seven years old and they gave sight to people through cornea donation so you're never too old um we have had oregon iin tissue donors that have been infants that have been newborns i'm really there is no age limit either young or old and as far as the i've used and abused my body nobody wants my oregon's nobody wants my tissues i have bad i say um um just simply none of that is true because let's say you're a diabetic uram seventy year old die a diabetic um so that might mean that your kidney and pancreas can't be used but let's see our heart is really strong urine decent shape your heart strong you haven't smoked your lungs can be used to your eyes your corneas can be used first i say.
