Drug Addiction In America
"Woken to Mentally Yours Metro could ikaes weekly podcast about all things mental health. Today we're talking to Dave. Marlon, he was the CEO of crossroads of Southern Nevada, which was the largest addiction and Rehab Center in the area, the psychotherapist drug and alcohol counselor, and he basically knows everything about addiction and mental health issues in the US and beyond. Making me talking tim today about how the pandemic has been affected addiction issues to get help if you're struggling and how to recognize if you might have a problem with drugs or alcohol. Bruce Dave. Thanks so much for joining us on mental yours and welcome from across the pond. My first question was basically because obviously as I mentioned, we're in London. You're in the US, it such different situation in terms of addiction, mental health, and obviously the pandemic to get started. Could you give kind of a brief overview of the reality of addiction in the US? How serious the problem is that how widespread is a? The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation calls addiction the number one health problem in the US. If we look at the the number of prescription opiates that are consumed in the entire world The United States consumes more than eighty percent of them. We. have. You know we've always had an alcohol problem for a percentage of our population. we we developed enough and phetamine mean and a cocaine problem over the last. Twenty years, and in the last five, six years Oh actually even a little longer. An opiate problem has has become. Our most serious addiction challenge. Kind of the most common addiction issue that you see people coming into your center with. It it's interesting. I've run Iran the largest treatment center in Las. Vegas of. Gene. Years. And now as a private center and they're absolutely opiates or over my last three, four years, they're opiates was the number one drug of choice that clients had presented to solutions recovery without the opiate use disorder their primary. Primary substance. Now I work at an indigent facility in in downtown. Las Vegas where. More than half of our clients are homeless. And what's interesting is with this demographic, there's a much higher methamphetamine use. Would say my number one. Substance of for clients is nothin vitamin with opiates and alcohol running for a close second place. That's really interesting I. Think What was interesting that you said kind of opiates have been coming up over the lost six years because for me, it's felt like the coverage has been really recent like only in the last couple of years, we taught it to the opioid crisis this being a sudden kind of unexpected issue but you're saying it's been building for a long time. It has. Interestingly, fourteen years ago I was running the largest health insurance company in the state. And I remember in my last. My last year or two I remember looking at pharmacy reports and we were all scratching our heads saying what is this Oxycontin and why did it not show up two years ago and now I remember when across the ten million dollar mark at the Insurance Company for monthly use so it really begins began spiking. Thirteen fourteen years ago. It became. Newsworthy in fashionable. Six seven years ago, and now we're a were still squarely in an opiate epidemic.
I'm Having Boundary Issues With My Parents
"Scott is with us. In Atlanta Georgia, Hi Scott what's up man? Hello Dave a doctor Doni Personal Dave. Congratulations Faculty is such a great addition to the lineup. We'll thank you we agree. Brother Scott and your check in the mail rather. All right waiting for that since I'm on. Right, now, so anyway, to my question my wife and I like I said, we're on baby step two. We've got a ways to go currently cash flowing kids through college my parents who are eighty years old never saved for retirement They've I called in last. Ti- last year You help me guys guide through bailing my parents out of a financial prices and then you send them through FPU and set them up with a financial coach they fully completed both and you also sent me boundaries which I read. last month, they called me to tell me not ask me that they needed need to co-sign a loan for them because my mom wants cosmetic surgery, they can't afford. At eighty though. Yeah. I don't even WANNA ask Ya. Yeah I I could make it exciting but it's It has to do with dental work. So I told them I was not going to dismiss the principles I live by to enable their behavior especially after they have sensibly learn the same thing. I did anyway my birthday was August thirtieth it came and went without a caller card. My father now spends time posting passive aggressive stuff on facebook about how children are supposed to treat their parents. Now I know I'm right by co-signing. And I'm not sure from a relationship standpoint what I'm supposed to do here I wouldn't let them starve or be thrown out on the streets but this is a want not a need. we're all angry obviously one of us who's right. But we're at astounding. Hurt, so bad I'm sorry. Ask got hate that for your brother. So. Here's the deal when it comes to what's the right thing to do financially of course, you know that you're right men when it comes to the right thing to do relationship of course, you know you don't need validation but you're right you drew a boundary that was best for you and for your family and you held them to it and I'm proud of you for that and you're getting to see what the other side of a boundary looks like when Someone Ping's off your the walls or the fences or the boundaries you drew and they choose to react immaturely and the hard part. Is You love your parents. You Love Your Mom you love your dad individually and together, and they're choosing to make their own path as adults are able to do, and that hurts in that stinks and you're going to have to grieve that But the reality is there eighty they're allowed to do whatever they want to do and I would suggest you turn off facebook and don't listen to the nonsense and you continue to be mature and you continue to be adult and yes, you send them cards on their birthday because children honor their parents and you make sure they are included when it's appropriate but. You'RE GONNA have to grieve this part of man because I just stinks. I'm sorry. Hey, for the only the only recompense you've got this, there's only one kind of a relationship that requires money to be transferred. It's called prostitution. And so if your relationship is money dependent. You're in that class. You don't have a relationship in other words. Because that's not a relationship that's a transaction agreed. I agree and so. I'm just saying it's the only way you're. You have to get your brain around Oslo. It's chapter two. I believe maybe one even in boundaries. That says you're not crazy. Remember that chapter. You're not crazy you because when you get this paying off the boundary, John described it. What you start to feel is is that you're crazy like you did something wrong I, a- bad son and my being a legalist being too hard core and so forth, and it's like No. Sky You're just asking how to deal with this. Well. Yeah. I, mean nobody wants to pick up the phone at this point. In so here's the deal call men and check in how's everybody doing. You can be the mature grown-up when there and if they choose to respond in immature ways, then then you can begin to develop new boundaries against that. The challenge with boundaries is we feel so good and we finally draw and we forget that boundaries do have consequences and boundaries do have emotional and feeling you know responses and sometimes people don't respond well to our boundaries and it hurts boundaries when someone feels like they're boundaries, me someone feels like they're entitled to something of yours that they're not entitled to. And you tell them that. Almost, always, there's a response of anger but I think we get so excited that we're drawn boundary that we feel good and we do it and it's like. We forget that tim be up against it and say, well, then you're not my son I, don't love you or if I really do cocaine and the living room. Dad Than I just won't let you be my dad if you're going to throw me out for doing that. I'm sorry we don't do cocaine. We're living room or it's going to be your fault that my. Kids are GONNA fill in the right. So people get to respond to that going to respond grandchildren are going to be hungry because of you because of you giving this thirty six year old without job for two and a half years any money you know this kind of thing and so your it's your fault. Somehow it's not your fault man I'm it does hurt when. It does breaks your heart, and so but I agree with John I mean just call them and have a conversation but here's the thing. Don't try to call them and fix it now doesn't fix they can't they're not there's no fixing this they're just going to get over it or not. Yeah I. Always want to encourage people to be mature party respectful party the relational party, but also protect yourself. Don't keep putting yourself in harm's way. For Scott.
End of Abe era leaves Japan still searching for way forward
"Your Shahida Suda as the country's new prime minister on Monday. 71 year old Mr Suder was overwhelmingly elected as the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, replacing Shinzo Abe has dominated Japanese politics for the past eight years. Mr was expected to serve until the end of next year, but announced suddenly he was stepping down last month, pleading poor health. There's now concerned that Japan could be about to return to what became known as revolving door politics when the country changed Prime Minister's almost every year, Rupert Wingfield Hayes reports. Yeah. You see that pit shuttle get this's something No one would have predicted even a few weeks ago. 71 year old Yoshida super being proclaimed leader of Japan's all powerful Liberal Democratic Party. And by default, the country's new prime minister. Mr Sugar is not known for his charisma or his oratory. And as he made his rather ponderous victory speech, you can hear why you know anybody. Ronnie. Still cocaine. I want to break down bureaucratic divisions invested interests, he says on the blind adherence to president indication to form a cabinet that will work hard for the people. That takes a kike Agos, Cary Most Japanese, No, Mr Sugar as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's long serving grim faced spokesman Up till now. He has always been a backroom guy. A fixer. He has none of the charm or diplomatic skills. Mr Abba used TTO win over President Donald Trump. But according to those who know him like economists and long term Tokyo resident Yes, Bacall, Mr Sugar brings other attributes to the game. Here is a man who gets up at five o'clock in the morning. Does 100 sit ups and then reads all the newspapers and by 6 30. He's starting meetings right with business people with advisers, you know, with outside economists, he absorbs like a sponge and wants to get things done for the country. He's not interested in any of the glitz or blink that comes with war nongovernment. The problem for Mr Suder. Is he has no mandate from the Japanese people. His elevation to the top job was a stitch up by L. V P. Party bosses in smoke filled back rooms. Perhaps because of that much is being made of Mr Segers Humble background. The son of a strawberry farmer, he worked in a cardboard factory to pay his way through college. He's certainly very different from most of Japan's recent prime ministers like Mr Abbott, the silent of a powerful political dynasty, but in the scheming world of Japanese politics Rashid, a circus. Humble origins could also be his undoing. According to Professor Koichi Nakano of Tokyo's Sophia University. Mr Silva comes from a humble background. He really doesn't have his own power base. You know, he doesn't belong to any faction on DH. He actually, you know, Rose to power because he was Mr B's preferred choice on the party bosses rally behind him, You know, emergency situation. But once the emergency situation is gone, and once the party bosses study realized that they're not getting all they wanted. I'm sure there's going to be past trouble. They're both from
The First Step Act, Chuck Colson, and the Churchs Work of Restoration
"I'm old enough to remember that time way back in two thousand, eighteen when Democrats and Republicans worked together. Really it happened and resulted in a major bipartisan criminal justice reform bill called the first step act which sought to reduce the number of people in overcrowded federal prisons and improve conditions for those behind bars. When he endorsed the bill President Trump said this we're all better off when former inmates can receive and re enter society as law abiding productive citizens at last month's Republican National. Convention Ivanka trump called the first step act the most significant criminal justice reform of our generation? I don't think that's an overstatement. A major feature of this bill is that it reduces mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenders, especially low level nonviolent offenders, and for those already serving time for crack cocaine related offenses the reductions were retro active in just its first year. First Step Act has literally changed thousands of lives according to a recent report from the United States sentencing commission the sense is. More than seven thousand Federal Prisoners Dean able to safely return to their communities were reduced as the libertarian publication reason rightly noted the first step to act as a modest but very real first step towards comprehensive criminal justice reform and I'd add that as part of the legacy of Chuck Colson and the very good work of prison fellowship, this bills and example of the Church's work of restoration. God us. Chuck Colson to transform the way that many political leaders especially conservative political leaders thought. About criminal justice while imprisoned chuck learn just how empty and even counterproductive the lock them up and throw away the key rhetoric that he wants espoused really was the call that God then placed on Chuck's life was to bring the Gospel to prisoners and their families through prison fellowship but that quickly expanded to include prison in criminal justice reform. He quickly realized that being tough on crime was pointless unless we were first smart about crime being smart about crime lead Chuck to campaign against. The three strikes and you're outlaws that swept the US during the nineteen nineties he knew that such laws would only lead to overcrowded prisons, unaffordable system building and maintenance, and eventually the court ordered releases of thousands of prisoners because of political pressures instead of Prudential Wisdom, we've seen some of that even recently God use Chuck Solid, conservative Christian and law and order credentials to advance this new message people who may not have given other activists. The time of day respectfully listened to him many. Hearts and minds were changed not just because of Chuck Colson Passion or is incredible ability to articulate. But because he took people with him back into prison to see for themselves, what he saw to borrow modern fraiche chuck move the Overton Window in other words that acceptable range of policies politically acceptable to the mainstream population and so decades later years after Chuck Olson's death at a time of deep and painful political division. The first apt act garnered bipartisan support, Chuck's legacy of giving people. The moral permission and the intellectual justification to do the right thing in this area is something that Christians should seek to emulate in every aspect of life and culture. Of course if we're going to do this, we have to I know what the right thing is, and then we have to learn to talk about issues in ways that might be heard about a year ago that vision drove us to launch. What would you say a video resource designed to help Christians Converse on our? Culture's most challenging questions. Now, our personal stories might not be as dramatic as Chuck Colson was, but we can still strive for the same humility

Address the pandemic of. Corona virus. And you're in charge of a lot of that effort. Can you take us through the process of developing and law launching? He's willing. Betty. Ford's telehealth strategy. Sure so because. My background has always been in technology. I was looking ahead and trying to predict kind of where the industry was going to go is you're looking at technology and healthcare in general I. Think it was pretty clear that technology utilization in behavioral health was really lagging in particularly even more. So in substance use a lot of organizations didn't even have electronic medical records. And you looked at the look at the industry, look at the industry problems, patient problems and care delivery problems back in twenty eighteen. When I HAPPEN TO HAVE A. Demo of some software that one of our pair partners was developing. And it clicked on me that. This technology could be. Used to deliver care differently. So was in two thousand, eighteen we started to talk about how could we use video? In live video between patients, not just in one in one environment which was being done. For telehealth for for years. But how could it be done in a group environment because the problem we are looking to solve Was Access. We're working with a lot of our partners around the country and communities. Academic health centers and other state organizations in healthcare to rural organs. Rural patients is a real challenge. So you know, could it help provide care improve access to roll Marcus would the convenience? Of being able to get care wherever you're at improve engagement. If you live in downtown La Chicago New York you know the catchment area is really small and some big cities because people don't want to fight the traffic after work to get the care. So convenience improve engagement. And the other was would. Stigma. Could we help through overcome some of the stigma. By. Not Making people physically have to show up at a building Kinda put a label on themselves Kenneth come out much more in a sense in Kuwait engaged them earlier by having them. Feel it's safer. As, well as convenient. To start that way. So we it started in two thousand eighteen down the past, and could we accomplished all the goals of of healthcare which is approve access improve outcomes improve. Patient satisfaction and lower costs.

What John Thompson Meant To DC
"What was it like for you to cover John Thompson and the Hoyas as a young reporter? What were your interactions with him like? It was. You know it was an education was twenty, three, twenty, four years old and that was my first beat but John was a handful. As you can imagine, and he controlled everything we control the player access you controlled access to himself and draw the program, and so John was someone that you You had to kind of meet on his terms. Can you describe he was six foot ten? He was just this literally and figuratively massive figure. Can you describe what it? was like to be in his presence well, I mean look any six, ten, three, hundred, pound guy is going to have a certain amount of power to him. You know he wasn't nimble I won't say he was Nimble but he certainly had the meeting of former athlete and you know he had a big loud booming voice nothing had happened by accident I had no intentions of being a basketball court. I. Wanted To be a teacher basically social worker kind of person freelance. Knew. How to use his size and his voice to great effect and I, was not the recipient of John's paint peeling yelling as as the players often were but they will tell you that there was just there was just nothing like it when he really was angry and was coming after you about a mistake, you made a decision you made. He certainly tilted the room when he came in when their buzzer went off and they said it's over. We didn't stay up and down the hallway and talk with people kissing is just so we can get a good article written about us he coach during the glory days of the Big East what do you remember most about his team's and just the style and the way that they played? Well, the frenetic full court pressure was their thing. To set up an impressed. Retract. Very physical teams anybody that came into the pink dot hit, and that's just the way that they had always played. Here. And that leads to a lot of confrontations. A couple of pretty bad fights. But a lot of grabbing and holding things like that. And that's just the way that they had always played in obviously worked for them. David you're born and raised DC. Can you talk about what John? Thomson and the Georgetown Program? Men's to people in DC and in particular to black basketball fans in the city DC was like a lot of cities in the eighties dealing with a lot of different stuff that was that was very difficult. The year is only sixty days old during that time. There have now been ninety-two homicides here in the District of Columbia last year sixty to eighty percent of the murders in the nation's capital, we're listed as drug related. You had the explosion of crack cocaine in DC in in the mid eighties just devastated whole swath of the community and you had Marion Berry who was this incredibly polarizing figure, and this is before his drug problems came to bear. He was polarizing well before then because he insisted that these rich white guys that tended to run the city hire black people all the people who only know Marion Barry through the nasty headlines in the videotape of crack cocaine. Don't know extraordinary work. He did in this in Washington to open up the doors of government to the black people of Washington you're shutout for years decades, and then you have this presidential era of Reagan, where there was a lot of hostility towards cities, there was a lot of cutting a city services. There was a lot of emnity towards people that were on welfare and they've perception that raking perpetuated was that all these people are welfare cheats and they're not in their bums and you're not working for a living perhaps the most insidious effect of welfare is it's usurpation of the role of provider. Public assistance for a single mother can amount to much more than the usual income of a minimum wage job. In other words, it can pay for her to quit work. These competing forces, all kind of colliding with one another in the city in the early eighties in the mid eighties and into that Maelstrom, you have this basketball team. That is good enough to win a national championship in one, thousand, nine, hundred, four. Jobs. The I ask championship. And then notice that the team is mostly black eleven of the twelve guys or thirteen or fourteen guys that get your attention in one, thousand, nine, hundred, eighty, three, or eighty four you know rap videos late eighties is a Lotta Georgetown starter jackets in those videos. was torn concept had long hair and short baby came in national programs to the point where a lot of black people thought. Georgetown was an HP. Come to the. Question to see hundred. So there was this kind of interesting blend. Wall Street types and judges, and fortune five hundred CEO's with the people that cleaned the offices and drove the buses rooting for the same team and it was gonNA. Kinda, cold because it kind of it helped bring the city together in ways that really only the football team had done previously and it brought a lot of pride to the city as as a six. They were proving that black kids from inner city high schools could go to Georgetown and do work. They could do the work and that was a source of immense pride to people in DC Thomson was, of course, the first black basketball coach to win a national championship. But David you've written about how Thompson would bristle when asked about that accomplishment. Why did he? Take exception to that question will John would always say is that the question implied that he was the first black coach who who had the qualifications to win a national championship I'm not interested in being the first and only black do anything because it implies that in Nineteen eighty-four, a black man finally became intelligent enough to win NCAA, title and that's very misleading. And that was John's way of saying you know you need to understand the history of coaching. There was a lot more deferential treatment provided to white coaches for for decades and coaches like Adolph rupp that didn't recruit black players. was hostile toward black players. So that was John's way of saying you know do your homework. In nineteen, eighty nine. He famously walked off the court before a game to protest an NCWA rules that he felt disproportionately affected black students. undercurrent NCWA rules students can qualify for athletic scholarships by scoring seven hundred out of a possible sixteen hundred on the College Board Sat test fifteen out of thirty six on the act or with a two point average and certain. Subjects proposition forty two would require athletes to have both. What did he? What did he say about that? John's position was that both the sat scores and your grade point average could be impacted adversely due to the educational disparities present throughout public schools at the time black has weren't being taught the things that were on the sat. He made his point that you know these tests should not be the end all and be all in terms of determining whether or not a kid was smart enough to go into college. Moment existence and I. started into school that I would not been dotted with an opportunity to get a college education myself. He was recruiting kids that play but also kids that can do the work. So it was not as much an issue for him in terms of recruiting it was more the bigger picture of. Are we going to allow these tests to determine whether black kids can get into colleges and then they finally wound up modifying prop forty two as a result of it.

And I was like, no, I'm not meeting you at ten pm. Looking back at his pitchers. He wasn't even that hot. I was tired. I had already ordered room service. I was trying out guys, but I wasn't really invested. I realized that I wasn't really invested in the process, but I kept the app on and that's the first step. However, me and Jay hit the streets this last weekend and went to a white. Linin party. So we let fabulous. Yeah, you guys are supposed to join us the information. But I knew that you ladies were gonna be looking so good. And what happened? Good time that we, we did. We didn't. Actually, I did not fellas. Okay. Tell me Danielle. He was cute God out of the Uber and to other gentlemen and white got out. So we always say, we're going to the same event. We they know exactly where it was, but I was trying with him. He's from the south, very good-looking Obermann, say early forties. I would say early forties. He couldn't even be late forties, but take such good care of himself. Earl, he he could be and he looked, he looked good. We walked into the event, kinda winner on way. Maybe a couple of hundred people there me and Jay or they're, they have snacks and the lines too long..

"It i know that sounds weird but like i think that a lot of the challenges that are happening between men and women are about power in about like how sex plays into the power dynamic okay that sound right we're just keep duck fishing through but i do think that we in the united states have learned about sex in really strange in in weird ways in other parts of the world and in other cultures sexism more open a free conversation but i do think that there's a strangeness about it in the united states because it's so taboo at times and then it's so not taboo with porn and like everything else that's going on so i'd love for us to start the conversation about how did you learn about sex was it your parents was at sexual education like what was the way that you understood it i know this is a little awkward but we're gonna talk nowadays that awkward it's just i'm gonna ssume that like me my parents talk about sex with me so it was just more of my homeys tug about sex with these we talk about sex then the one home he got the porn tape that we always pass around and try to sneak in you like oh me hey you know you have six about the the nasty stuff that comes with sex like vehicles and all that stuff but the porn is what makes it exciting so the vena porn porn outweighs of ed and then if you know you wanna get it in because he's how great it is i for me like when i think back on sax i definitely no i've always been really sexual like i ever since i was very little i was always making our little girls like an elementary school i was always like on the boy you're the girl and my sister was always telling me as sister that's five years older than me and she'd go tell my mom crystals may out there in the closet but it was more of like playing dress up and then playing like i was i think learned about it more movies than like romance maybes where you see the couples and the women and the men and so for me always wanted to be the girl when the other little girls the guy and we would play like we were a couple and married and stuff the and that was very young like elementary school age yeah i know so i think i'd just what well yeah yeah so that's kind of and then i had a sister that was older than me of course like you know went on an elementary school she's in like middle school and having boyfriends and then when she's in high school on the middle school so i just i think it was more just like tv and my sister and then me experimenting with like just little girls growing up yeah j left the table yang she's back with his shock look on her face surprised about that yeah i was i was saying that i think from like movies and stuff and i would always make out with my little girlfriends but i always wanted to be the girl and they're like the guy and myself but i'm not no because it's like it's like you can't say it was like oh that's okay but i guarantee if someone do say hey i was that's actually now that's someone i mean i think little girls and boys play pretend differently because of what society is sure okay sticks outside yeah you guys like play sports or like swords or whatever but we play house and so sometimes somebody's got to pay the guy right and in no way you know my blank into women all it was just i think i've always just been very sexual and just you know this is not surprising but it's helpful right yeah no interesting the no the first thing that made me start to be curious about it was a saw what was the movie attraction god and i also saw that and the blue lagoon.
