Sahel of a mess: France's impossible peacekeeping mission
"Jihadists are entrenching themselves. Ever further in the suhel continent wide strip of semi arid land just south of the sahara desert. There are former islamic state fighters ousted from the middle east al qaeda associates and a number of ethnic militias. The sahel's hitter ends are far from any city state. Laws don't hold. Public services barely exist last year. Nearly five thousand people died in battles or acts of terror in the region six fold increase on two thousand sixteen. An estimated four million people have fled their homes this week. Sixty world leaders are among those who have gathered online for the paris. Peace forum where the crisis is being discussed. A united nations peacekeeping force has a rim to patrol and to help rebuild the embattled region but most combat missions against the jihadists are led by several thousand french troops. Some of whom are based this gow in mali. Well we arrived in gow by plane then took a french military helicopter which flew at low altitude extremely fast for about an hour to get to this advance base that they've built out there in the middle of the sahel sophie. Better 'cause our paris bureau chief. An extraordinary region absolutely vast nothing in any direction will miss no human habitation. A few acacia trees the occasional goatherd and a tiny settlement. But that's about it and then you arrive in the middle of this dusty zone read colored sand where the soldiers who've made it. All the way from france had just finished a month. Long operation against jihadist. So these were both regular french soldiers but also special forces the most recent of these operations. They killed several dozen jihadists. They seize weapons motorbikes fuel and to one of them just described it. Talk to me that it was intense. There were violent encounters on the ground. This is real proper combat that the french soldiers are engaged in there. And how significant is the french presence in the region. Well the french have over five thousand troops as part of this operation that they called it by far the biggest contributor to any of the operations in the region there is a un peacekeeping operation with over thirteen thousand soldiers but no single country contribute as many as the french do. There are two hundred and fifty british for example due to arrive. Soon there are three hundred and fifty germans there but in effect. What's is obvious. Once you're there is how the real combat operations fall to the french conditions. A tough is extremely hard. The sand everywhere is grueling. And it's risky. How risky last year was the region's deadliest for years. There was a particularly nasty incident at the end of the year when the french lost. Thirteen elite soldiers in a helicopter crash but local soldiers from nizhny. Molly have also been on the receiving end of terrorist attacks. Neo lost seventy one soldiers in one attack than there was another took out fifty from marley. So it's a constant vigilance. And there's a constant sense of vulnerability even for the armed forces operating out there. But why is it that francis chosen to take the lead to to be the country with the greatest presence on the ground. Franz historically has links to the region it is the former colonial power which also causes something a problem now because it gets accused of acting in a sort of neo clooney away and fronts also has permanent military bases out there so it becomes a sort of natural partner for crisis in the past. I think that the french have really tried to change their strategy. This year. emmanuel macron host to summit at the beginning of the year with the leaders of the five signs countries and the idea is to trained share some of the burden to make sure that the french show more supported on the ground by the european countries for example they i saw estonians their swedish officer but also to try and get the regional armies to do a better job themselves and that was very clear in the description that i heard of the operations where they were working really very closely alongside marlon and nigerian forces in some of these operations against the jihadists issue in june macron emphasizes commitment to the operation solo vehicle always mma which party about the the fight against terrorism. But it's also about the return of governance and development for the region in which he wanted to work with local governments that are much closer basis and is that big french presence making any real difference to the levels of jihadist violence in this. Hell when i think it's important to think of it in terms of different regions and where we were so that was in the sort of central new central mari. I spoke to general marquan rate. Who commands the oppression. Can't overall the some offered to trish. She tested in terms of often. You said he was very satisfied with recent operations there. I think the french sense that they've really dealt a blow to what they call a die ashley. Islam state in the greater hara premium capacity results. Iovine underneath the media and the general said they haven't disappeared is but they don't have the same capacity to cause trouble that they did at the end of last year. So i think there is progress in that particular zone where they've been conducting these intense operations. Of course. the problem remains that can operate in one area but they certainly can't operate all over the country and that's where she doesn't remains a big problem and so what prospects for for actually paring back their prisons. I think is incredibly difficult. You know. I think the the french Condemned in a sense to stay in the sahel. The no plans to leave or to withdraw all their forces tool. I mean it's more question of trying to share the burden more the adversity. they're up against these jihadist groups. They are incredibly mobile than a magic they move about on motorbikes and pickup trucks and they can just disappear into the bush in a way. That's for the french forces. It's just makes it very difficult to contain and to target and so it sounds as if the the only option than it is to draw in international help. I mean how. How hard will that be the reds Help on the grounds. The american particular provide ups a crucial intelligence support to the operation. The british operates three shoot. Kelly copters there as well as part of buchan and they if french beccles and troops into combat zones on special forces which is obviously much more declined to start operations but the estonians are there and there are some checks and swedish special forces due to arrive soon so european countries are helping franz. But they aren't at the same time. Exactly lining up to offer these combat troops. And i think franz sometimes feels that. It's doing this job very much alone but the situation you describe is probably not going to be massively changed by a few dozen or a few hundred special forces. Even it's an incredibly difficult situation. The best the fringe show hoping to do is to try and contain the threat to try and secure areas and enable millions to go back to their homes into a more sense of security in some parts of the country. But it's not about defeating the enemy across the entire country. I think that much is clear.

"Friends. Who'd walk up to me and go hygiene fontane TAB right? There must have been working hard enough. They could have written to three dollars if they just had a little bit more time. And I said you know I know you play golf twice a week. That's S. eight ten hours. If you'd spent ten hours a week writing a book I did when I was really deep into it Instead of playing you could do it to give up some things some of those vices. We talked about. So how is this journey of writing a book shaped the rest of your life. Well that's a great question I set out at the beginning to be sure where I had put in one place some of the themes and values that had been important to me and I wanted to be sure my kids and I have two kids and three grandkids right now. They understood the culture that had shaped me because whether they know it or like it or not it shaped them and I wanted them not just have memories of me telling the story of sitting on the porch of a beach house or over dinner But I wanted them to have have it when I would hear anymore to remind them of some of these things whether it was how to go crabbing which is a little scene in the back in the trials to know a little bit about the the some of the law. I practiced and the places I grew up in my family. Grew up That is I am so glad I got this done in. Oh she's just a couple of either or's it can be either or both neither or you an outlander or a free flow in this process a little bit. I mean I had a general idea Of How wanted to start what the characters were GONNA be. I knew I'm not a dark guy so I knew wasn't gonNA end terribly darkly and All the things that happened along the way we all do my daughter kept saying. Why did you do good conflict conflict? Yeah Yeah so the family read it. Your family. Reading is any reviews on Amazon from the smart enough to do all that. I didn't know that so I know lawyers like to close the door. Get quiet when you're riding. Did you require complete quiet. Ambient Noise Fund with you. Did you like the quiet I like to say. I wrote a lot of this ride in the car where I would just turn all the music off like you're not you're not driving the court. Yeah Robin the corner. You're thinking ahead. Try to get him ahead. You're not doing. I would say what what can happen next next. I want to get from eight to be but what can happen. What can people say to one another And over a period of you know it's about four hours from here to the South Carolina. I'd that'd be myself sometimes my dog molly would be with me my springer Spaniel and I would think out this dialogue and in for new and I was there I did. I did quite as important to me to think hard about anything really. So there's a scene in here probably going to have time for because we're GONNA get to another couple of things things I wanna read. But you've got sane. Here called weight is way mcnabb's church talk a little bit about his church. Well You Know Wade ends up hiring when he gets sued he gets told that There's a woman right there in Georgetown. WHO's the right lawyer for this case for him she'd been with a big firms? She'd been an environmental lawyer. Course it often at a big firm. That means you're defending the people who are trying to blue violet But she didn't want to do that anymore she wanted. It'd be more like in her mind and more like atticus finch she comes to. Georgetown starts at around doing some criminal defense work but she's got this kind of civil litigation expires. Issue gets hired by Wade Wade realizes that he is putting essentially his life. He's a single guy mid forties cates mid thirties In her hands the thing that he came back here to nurture his dad's old newspaper so he says and he's a bit of funny guy and he he says Kate Tell Hey what I've hired you. Put My newspaper in your hands. I think we need to get to know each other a little better. How back going to church with me more? And she sold back a little bit. He he says well I'm not sure she hymns and halls and he persuaded he's a charmer persuades her to come and And says it'll so he shows is up at her in her house with his in his jeep and dressed in shorts and t shirt and she can't quite figure this out but He had told her to bring along some clothes in case they go on a picnic after church picnic so they head off the getting his boat dog with him and they head out to North Island which is right off of when you bay outside side George to his churches nature his churches. Niger exactly and so she begins to get that. And that helps lead in some of these themes of the environment the importance of that environment of that community. Wade's fear of losing this lawsuit. Kate explains to him a little bit. You know they do get the talk and at one point sitting out on the beach got a little sexual tension here. Moving see little relationship there the right age for not going further with that in some of the currents events were expecting something to happen right patient so can't have lawyer has got trial. Oh experience and I in an experience and a confidential source in play in a lawsuit without a courtroom scene and we got several courtroom saints in this book. We're not going to go through them all. Because there's a very pivotal courtroom saying near the very end of the book which listeners are GonNa have to you know you gotta go read the book but there is a saying that gives us a sense of Of the one of the golden tongue that Or the silver tongue. Maybe we'd be better way. The Bug Ravenhill has and That begins on page. Two eighty four RAVANELLI's deep red. Tie The underside. Loop bore the logo of Ben Silver's men shop Charleston's best best sported small dark blue ducks with green heads like most courtroom lawyers. Ravanell was secretly superstitious. He had never appeared in court without a tie that had at least some red in it ravanell button to suit jacket with his left. Hand smoothed at against his flat stomach and gestured with his right hand toward the judge smiling. Judge Judge Jones. It's the PSALMIST. wrote a single day in your courtroom is better than a thousand elsewhere. I thank your honor for scheduling this matter on such short notice for us. I'm sure counsel for the defendants appreciates that as much as we do. Before I address the precise merits of our motion I would like to set the stage for the court. Your honor just a bit judge. Jones nodded and Ravenhill continued years of courtroom and Senate Oratory taught him that bearing his voice down on the occasional Asian verb and adjective enhanced the impact of his delivery. This case involves claims for liable for defamation of character of an upstanding upstanding corporate citizen of this State Carolina Phosphate and four the defiling your honor of the reputation of Francis Trip Ravanell director of the South Carolina Environmental Resources Agency a fine public servant of the state their reputations were eviscerated by the pilots publication of false assertions Carolina phosphate in effect bribed trump ravanell to ensure sure that environmental resources agency would issue a wetlands permit for plant here in Georgetown. My clients warned the newspaper before it published that that story that those assertions were thoughts and should not be published ravenhill continued those warnings and pleas fell on closed close ears not deaf. Ears your honor but closed ears. They could hear US judge but they callously refused to listen. Ravenhill looked over. It weighed mcnabb and Sandy Anderson. He made a dramatic pause between each of the words of his next sentence judge they published the lies anyway and judge what they wrote was worse than lies. They were a half truths. It's like bait on a hook judge the best sees that worm dangling and bites it it tastes pretty good so he just gobbles down the rest hooking all. That's how the half truths works. Get this vision of this lawyer. I'm just a good old country. Yeah that's right that's that's when you were so we got.

Somebody saying that's just a little not much happened this one. Yeah I have a few people raise. That was me when I walked round. Places talking about the book speaking here and there and and And I always tell them I. This book is set in South Carolina. But it's not just about South Carolina and I it. It is true that I believe that public servants Are Out there so many I admire. I support I get behind when they're running because they're great right. People who want the best for their families and for South Carolina or North Carolina or the country but also remind those people in South Carolina who raise it that there was a time in the nineteen ninety s when ten percent of the South Carolina legislature was under indictment for taking bribes Video the smallest ninety percent. That's right It does have an endless. Don't forget in North Carolina. We won't have to go into that history but there's plenty of recent history mystery. In North Carolina of elected officials go into prison. Or you're also in the business of trying to tell an entertaining story and I mean I think Jan Gresham would say when somebody asked him. Why are you writing about lawyers and judges? They're complicit in all these shenanigans. He said well you know the most time they're all good. This is a you know. I gotTA sell books here. Yeah so so bad news play. We talked about all the planes and Lansley exactly where we're going to this little. Thank the writing life segment I I I. I'm doing. Some different pieces here is going to be some fill in the blanks and true false true as far as your concern not necessarily truth entirely but True false routine is an important part of your writing process. It was not from it was now is working fulltime. I did it When when I just had time and what I also was excited about doing publishing is a journey not a sprint true false as absolutely true? Yeah took you to. How many years did you if you want from the time? I wrote the first first paragraph without a book came out with ten years. Yeah they were. Doing things tend to take nine months. I was working on some case and not paying attention to this true false writing. The second book is harder than the first well. I says I had read the second round yet. League guilty to that And that's leads into my question about it because I know you've been asked this over and over and over. John when are we going to get the sequel here. We're GONNA find out what happens to debate and Wade and all this stuff. You thought about it right. I not only have thought about it. I do think about it in I. I still take lots of notes. I still think about the plot that would that would hold some of these characters together and bring in some new characters and I think ABS- still practicing law. I think as soon as I quit. There's the fear I have to say. I thought about this long time a little bit of fear that can do it as well as all that did this. All right Fill in the blank devices and activities. That would interfere with my writing include. Oh my grandchildren. I have three wonderful great grandchildren. One of them's only ten months. It would be an activity. Not Advice Right. Yeah Well you have to include tennis vice and and and I'm terrible Golfer but my friends still let me go with them and I liked her companionship. So there are things like data in terms of Vices I've met I love to read and that's if I could tell my younger writing self something very helpful it would be well almost took to address something you said earlier. I think you need to write at least initially what you really know because I know there's some old quotes I've seen that gave her where it came from but something about fiction. Speak to the facts in the true of the facts. The better the fiction Tom Wolfe off. was a nonfiction writer who then wrote several novels not perfect novels but good novels and he because he could create a scene saying that was so real. It made you believe even some of the parts of the story might be hard to believe. I think that's That's an important part is make sure you either know these things or you learn about them enough so that they're they're credible it makes the rest of your story credible. Sometimes there's more truth than fiction than there is in real life yeah. Black was helpful influence on me as a writer can be a person or thing. Well I've met a couple of real quickly Robert Penn Warren's all the king's men great American novel Great Influence Tom Wolfe Because of his ability to focus on facts and make them part of fiction For sure Those too so. What's the fact about you as a right of the people might be surprised to learn? Well I used to tell people when they would ask for that. The thing that surprised about that. I've actually run at practice law as long as I have for over four decades. So how did you bow. So how'd you bounce the writing life with the with the legal. Well I used to give friends of mine. Particular lawyer.

Who knows what they're doing Broncos could be. But with the cardinals, you know. Are you of the belief that Kyle Murray is going number one? Every mock draft Bucky Brooks just posted his new mock draft today and that Kyle Murray going number one. And every mock draft I'm seeing has him going, right? That is like oh, man. I'm really torn between this one. Because do I think he's the number one overall quarterback? Yes. The beneficiary of what you know Baker Mayfield able to do last year. Yes. But. Wow. That's that's to bring. He's got to be special. You know, what do you do with Josh Rosen? I thought about it. Do you even trae Josh Rosen because does do teams want Josh Rosen? Like, what's the trade value? You got a first round pick last year. And Josh Rosen at that they traded to trade for. Yes. And then you're not going to get that same draft capital back. It's almost wasted pick last year for Steve cardinals. If you go out and draft Kyla Murray because you're not gonna get that same compensation back. I know some people were like, oh, this is going to be a trade market for Josh Rosen. I don't think so because we know you have to trade him away. So the best thing I think is you just kind of keep them. And you basically you have two quarterbacks on the roster. We saw with Washington, but I know that Kirk cousins was a later round pick a fourth round pick. But why not compete with both those guys Cuyler Murray? And Josh Rosen best quarterback. We'll let them battle battle it out. So I can see the possibility of them not having to trade and just go ahead and draft Carla Murray, and let them battle it out. I mean, I think if you can get a late round. First round pick or early second for Josh Rosen. You do it. No brand. I don't think any teams going give it up though. I just don't I think 'cause we know you have to do something. You know what I mean? So why am I gonna give you just rules of negotiation? Yeah. Yeah. I'm moving on a lot of speculation about when the patriots acquired Michael Bennett from the eagles. If Martellus Bennett is brother who had retired last year kind of drop some Hinson. Maybe he liked to come back and play with his brother. He wanted Super Bowl with New England today he posted on Instagram. That's not gonna happen. A lengthy post saying and part I would love to play ball with my brother..

"We do it on Mondays at tar three word game. We go back to the Thursday game. Every NFL game can be explained. In three words. Here we go first Packers and Seahawks. Winless in Seattle. Aaron Rodgers now for four against Russell Wilson Seattle. The Packers this year and five on the road. If a team can't win on the road. And let's. Much different home that on the road. There's a reason and with Green Bay they give up on the run Aaron Jones feed him the rock. What are you doing? They quit on it. They couldn't win Seattle next up. Cowboys and falcons NFC east champs. Dallas is five and five one game. Back a Washington and a host the Redskins short week Thanksgiving Day. Listen, Dallas is limited offensively against Atlanta. They had six points entering the fourth quarter. But when Zeke is turning out one hundred plus yards one hundred thirty hundred forty yards this football team that front seven defensively is a real team. They'll be the weakest division champ if they win it. But it does look like now they control the division. Titans colts ten and Andrew luck has this is weird. He's never lost. The titans. Can you imagine being titans fan you go to one game a year the colts game? Do they Andrew luck is the Michael Jordan of the NFL? Andrew luck. Now has an offensive line. For the first time in his career appears to have a decent running game. The defense is young not great plan or but off coaches deserve credit. I called it three weeks ago. I said keep your eye on the Colt. They're not gonna win the division. They're going to get in as a wildcard team. They're favored by the way by ten joy over your dolphins. Ten over while. You're you're dumping. I can't do what am I gonna say? Yeah. The dolphins ravens Bengals that was fun. Tibo had the record before Lamar Jackson twenty two Russia's by quarterback. Lamar Jackson shattered it with twenty seven. Listen, he's better than I thought he would be he sat around for ten weeks. They've helped some place for fun Gallo whip there those are more like a baseball football. But it was fun now not sustainable knocking to last forever. But that was way more entertaining than what Joe flacco has given me for the previous ten weeks. Buchan ears. Giants. Giant still alive? I can't believe I said that. But the giants are three and seven only three games back of Washington actually have a chance to be a wild card team or when the division. Oh, my head hurts. Listen. Allies been comfortable night. We'll say this. They had a new coaching staff is it fair to give them eight weeks to get their act together. Yeah. I mean, it was really bad for eight weeks. But it does look like in the couple of last week's to protections better allies kind of clicking with people looks a little better eagles saints while the saints say who DAT the ego should say. What was dad forty one point loss? Biggest ever for defending Super Bowl champ? Listen, it's the lottery winner syndrome. You're not used to be in rich don't know what to do with the money, and when you're not used to winning Super Bowls Philadelphia, yet don't know how to

It's it's an underrated song in terms of our catalog. Really? Yes. When you when you see what happens in our live set to this song? It's fucking it's explosive. It's explosive. It wasn't as big of a song is how I could just kill a man or insane in the brain or rock superstar shit. But it's that that dark horse. It's that dark horse song. Because when that song starts, you know, back in the nineties when we did it people would just immediately ignite into a much like we weren't calling for it. We started fucking emulating what was happening in front of us. So we would bring all our homeys on stage, and we'd all be fucking each other up mosh on stage like like really doing it. You know, we were stupid. But that's what people loved about. This is that we were willing to go that way and be chaotic and give them a spectacle. Who you know? We didn't have all the crazy visuals and bills and whistles, but what we did have was a raw energy, and we took use of that. And we. Took hold of it in harnessed it and used it to our vantage. So that Rhonda's feels left out her Miami as is starting to become increasingly clear motivated, not only by desire to protect Ron's feelings, but by developing feelings of her own quote, this whole stretches, it's painful Buchan mesmerizing we're allowed to bring guests at her mind who for some reason, it turned a break boiling scarlet or why. And I was going to ask you to come, but if you think it's stupid and I won't bother. Harry is very embarrassed out starts busying himself with her Balaji task as the exchange continues. This is actually very touching this next part. You were going to ask me as Ron in a completely different voice. Yes, at her, my knee angrily, but obviously, if you'd rather, I hooked up with MacLagan. Here's the next part. There was a pause while Harry continued to pound the resilient pod with trial. No, I wouldn't said Ron and very quiet voice. This is. Wonderful stuff full of portents of different kind Ron. In her mind, he's involving feelings for each other and the clumsy grasping bass, ackward way. They go about expressing to each other and even just thinking about it themselves. Right? What if it works, what if it lasts? What if it's too excruciating to even be in their presence because they're so in love, like it is Bill in floor. This last thought of Harry's has some of the markings of youth immaturity, of course, but there's also something very human play. We just explored how Ron so often is the one who feels left out contemplating his two best friends pairing up together. Makes Harry feel left out the third wheel in a friend group that to this point has. In essence entirely revolved around him. Unfortunately, for Harry, he's about to have some clumsy romantic entanglements of his own pop up. Oh, yeah. Katie bell out of commission. CLYDE, his insides hot blood seem to flood his brain so that so that all thought was extinguished replaced by a savage earner to jinx dean into jelly. Harry. Luckily for him is spared the need to instantly process this and bring himself to speech because Ron cakes it upon himself to defend Weasley, family honor, and effectively slut shamed sister for having a robust and lively love life. This is an awful Eireann awful turn around. Muesli. When Ginny turns furious Theron and says quite fairly, that it's none of his fucking business dates. He says yet is, do you think I want people saying my sister's a what, shouted, Ginny, drawing her want what exactly now? Very Ron. Yes, to be slightly fairly. He's processing a lot of emotions of his own right now. Yeah, about her mind about his own inadequacy, and seeing his sister acting in this manner makes him feel ashamed of his own lack of experience and undeniably jealous. His siblings and his friends are experiencing romance, and he has hasn't radically not..

"Buchan nearest quarterback Jameis Winston spoke to the media for the first time since the NFL handed down a suspension for groping an Uber driver. He is at bucks training camp and was not taking reps with the first team. He will be out for the first three games the upcoming season. So they have to get the backup ready to go. And let's just go through some of the things that he said. Here's what he said. I about talking to his teammates about his. Spend initially, I talked to my teammates. I, you know. I not as doom yesterday, and I apologize because I don't want to be a distraction. I just want to be at a focus on season moving forward. It's interesting, a guy who continues to be a distraction to say something like that. There are changes in behavior that could prevent him from making headlines whether it be from something as simple as the way he speaks to a classroom of kids or groping an Uber driver. I hear James now and I've been a bucks in my entire life. I'm sorry. Hey, they had that Super Bowl would they came through it, but I've been with them for a long time goal with my grandpa to the old sombrero Tampa stadium. I hear James now and I just instantly shut down. It doesn't even matter what's coming out because he he did all the stuff that if as you he promised, he would stay out of trouble. He was on hard dogs as the star of that. Show fun, loving guy. Everything was supposed to be great last year it wasn't. They didn't play very well. And now this incident happens, he suspended as a fan and as somebody who's followed the state my whole life. As soon as I hear him talking, I just go, yeah, it's tough. Here's what he had to say about not getting first team reps at camp today. I got mixed in there. You know? And again, it's not about me about us, you know? So I just went focus on being a best teammate that can be. And and ball out on. All right, it's it's cliches, which are to be expected. But again, it it is about you because you hurt your team because you're not available for the first three games. You are not a good teammate because you selfishly do things that prevent you from being out on the field that distract from the rest of the team that cause your teammates to have to answer questions about you that cause your management to.
