A parcel of oceanfront parcel of oceanfront property in Manhattan Beach that a black couple was forced to sell nearly 100 years ago could soon be returned to their descendants. State lawmakers passed a special bill that will allow LA County to transfer Bruce's beach back to family members who have fought for decades to obtain justice. KCRW's Darryl Saxman fills us in starting in the 19 teens, Will it and Charles Bruce ran a flourishing beach resort for black residents of Southern California. Because Back then, black patrons were unwelcome at most businesses along the coast, then in 1924 Manhattan Beach, seized the property through eminent domain, ostensibly to build a park. But historical records show the resort was actually shut down because city officials objected to the fact that its owners and patrons were black. The property was eventually turned over to the county, which built a park there. Both the city of Manhattan Beach and L. A county have since acknowledged the wrong But state law prevented the county from transferring or selling the property. Now the Legislature has carved out an exception, allowing it to be handed back to descendants of Charleston will Bruce KCRW's Darryl Saxman. See store for details so where we last left off. The government sees the bruce's property via eminent domain back in nineteen twenty four. And now chief. Shepherd and kvant ward are working to return that property to the bruce family or the descendents of the bruce family. But how do you even get started with that. Like how do you even begin this process to get the bruce family this land. Yeah i mean this has never been done before. There's no textbook for this or guidebook on how to do it and so to understand how the bruises gonna get their land back. I had to go about twenty miles out of town to a large bland government building. Ask this is the office of janice. Han los angeles county supervisor. So i started looking at this plot map. The actual property where willa and charles bruce had built their resort now was owned by the county of los angeles. And i said we need to give it back can week back and i talked to my lawyers in the county. She told me that. Getting the bruce's land back was complicated but possible and they said it's never been done but if that's what you wanna do we'll see if we can do it really kind of optimistic. I feel like if i know anything about government process is that things take a lot of time and and that this kind of thing is probably complicated. Yeah and it is. I mean ever since the government took this land from the bruce's in nineteen twenty four. This land has exchanged hands multiple times between the state and the county and the city and so all of these different deeds and passing of ownership. In this way it made it so it wasn't technically legal to just give this land back to private citizens let alone the bruises so janice han gets on the phone with these to state lawmakers and they agree to team up with her. They're going to write this bill to allow the county of los angeles to give this land back to the bruce family. The wheels of government turned slowly but this one has moved very quickly in my mind so they still have to figure out a few things like which descendant of the bruce family should get the land. How much is it actually worth. What are we going to do with the jain or miss lifeguard station. That's currently on the land. And how do we make sure. The bruce family isn't saddled with having to pay millions of dollars in taxes. But the bill is on track to pass the california legislature. It has bipartisan support. And so janice han says they'll figure all those details out. This is really kind of a small thing but if it's possible it might show other governments that might show other counties other states that you you can't start writing some of these ron's damn all right so that seems fairly smooth and like the actually are doing the thing but i. I know it can't possibly be that simple correct returning. The land wasn't the hard part this is also about restitution right. The bruce's want some sort of payment for the one hundred years of lost income that they would have had if charleston willa had been able to keep that land in the family. There hasn't been a proper analysis yet. But it's estimated that the property charles. And willa bruce bought for twelve hundred dollars in one thousand nine hundred twelve would be worth seventy five million dollars today and have been running a business the whole time. I mean it's hard to say how much they would have made. But that's decades of potential generational wealth. Yeah i don't even know how to begin to calculate that but it's probably a shit ton of money right totally so right away when that discussion gets going about the restitution part of this there are a few signs that this part of the fight is not going to be easy. The city of manhattan beach is not going to be as open to this as the county was with the land so last summer as kevin ward and chief shepherds efforts become more public city officials do agree to revisit the forgotten history of bruce's beach and their version of this is to write a report as one does exactly so they bring in these local volunteers to help with that. They started meeting last fall. So on the heels of this nationwide racial reckoning and remember manhattan beach is one half percent black and as a group. I'm told that they feel. They need to do more than just right up the history. They wanna make amends so they sketch out a potential apology. Was this anywhere in the realm of what chief shepherd and the rest of the bruce family was actually asking for like did they. Did they ask for an apology. No they're not asking for apology they're asking for restitution and that's not happening at this point. No that's not even on the table but the people who wrote this report they do go a step further than just an apology. They say the city should address racial disparities head on. They advise the city council to review and revise ordinances and policies through an anti-racism lens. And they also say the city council should keep these volunteers around to continue advising them on these matters again. This is not necessarily what the bruce family is asking for. But once word gets out about this draft apology below. This is betty freitag. Thirty eight year resident of manhattan beach speaking on item number twelve madame mayor and esteem city council members. There is immediate pushback. I would ask the council to reject the resolution of apologies set forth. People told me that they started getting emails from this anonymous group. Your people saying that the reputation of manhattan beach is going to be damaged by making an apology. Next thing you know tons of people start calling into these city council zoom meetings remember this is all during covert we are again points for. The apology is no longer is racist. There are laws in place on antidiscrimination. I do not believe our city is racist and then the group started placing these anonymous ads in the local paper. This whole bruisers being mad. Green inner-city troublemakers. Here we want the right kind of people. Here in manhattan. Make no mistake if we give into this apology. Letter intimidations threats. The accusations were continuing to ask why and beach singled out. If guilty of anything is probably wealth. And that's because.

"I had gone by they with my mom when i was younger. She pointed to this vacant lot along the beach area as she said you know that used to belong to our people bruce's you know used so. Never forget that for a lot of residents of this area. This history has been somewhat obscured. The city did build a park in nineteen fifty six but the real story of bruce's beach was kind of a whisper until around the mid-2000s when more residents started talking about my name is mitch ward on the former mayor here in the city of manhattan beach and form a council member so mitch ward was the first black mayor of manhattan beach and he explains that while he was running for office people would start coming up to him wanting to talk to him about this thing. People would say no where all the skeletons are buried in the city and like how the city really got that random park in the first place prizing. I was born in arkansas. And so it's not surprising to me of some of the things that have happened to black americans in this nation. She was a black woman. That was an entrepreneur. And she says. I have the money. And i'm going to buy this property and this is my property now that i have bought it and i'm not going to leave and so i wanted to stand up for their rights as a black man in two thousand six so in two thousand six mitch ward leads his effort to rename the park. Bruce's beach park. This was eighty years after the city took the land and it worked the city even put a black but even still there is a lot of information missing from this plaque like about all the ordinances and the threats that the versus received and how the bruises lost their land. it also doesn't acknowledge what shutting this resort down meant for the larger african american community in southern california. I mean after the bruce's were forced out. Decades of redlining and restrictive covenants made it virtually impossible for other african americans to buy land in the area. It was not just the bruises and the other families that lost out on opportunities in manhattan beach. Alison rose jefferson again. The african american community loss out on a community to come and enjoy the space for the day or in terms of having the opportunity to establish residency in the community. Over one hundred years today. Manhattan beach is almost eighty percent white. Half a percent of the population is black. That's something that kevin ward noticed a soon as she got here that could fill in a genetically that it was very I got this air of pretentiousness. This wealthy white feeling here. So this is kevin ward. No relation to the former mayor. Mich award kvant is originally from harlem but she moved to manhattan beach a few years ago to be closer to the family of her young daughter. My first week in manhattan beach. I relapsed dealing with like i walk my daughter polly wog park at the time. She was napping in her stroller. You couldn't see her face so one day. She was walking her daughter in the park. And so i remember sitting down on the bench at the park and these older white woman sitting next to me and she was she literally just came out of her mouth and asked me what family nannied for. She was just having conversation. She didn't think there was anything wrong with it and as slack. Wow so this is where i am. So that was her first impression of manhattan beach now fast. Forward to last summer twenty twenty. There was this ratio reckoning. She's part of these online mother's groups and she says every time she posted about black lives matter these other suppose leap progressive white mothers. They got kind of defensive like they didn't want to hear what she had to say so she decided to start a new organization they would post online and they would hold rallies doors. Someone forwarded me a blog post about bruce's beach didn't really think anything of it. I was just so focused on like black. People die by the hands of police and emotionally. I was spent.

"The kkk had chapters all along the coast of southern california. They had these phone. Campaigns started with fritz. Against will leave. Were harassing people. Starting fights they were slashing tires threatening threatening patriots and whatever lease at a mattress on fire under the porch of the resort which was quickly put out white real estate developers started pushing city officials in manhattan beach to do whatever they could to make life more difficult for the bruce's and for their business. People can only parked in minutes in the area. So by the time you got out of your car and got down to the water yet. In a parking ticket there were ordinances passed where people couldn't change their clothes in their car. We passed ordinances that that he could not have a business their bath house earlier on on the strand so through these ordinances the city was trying to stifle the bruce's business that meant that the bruises weren't gonna be able to expand their operations. Were not successful. In all the other harassment that they were doing was not successful in shutting them down the condemned the property so this is years of harassment at this point right and that eventually leads to the business getting shutdown. So where does that. Leave the bruises. Well at this point they still own the land but in nineteen twenty four. The city decides that they want to build a public park. Exactly where the bruises and these other families live. The city council decided to take in domain. And so they just take the land eminent domain so my understanding of this procedure is that a city can actually take land away from a homeowner under specific circumstances. Yeah i mean there are totally legitimate reasons for city or a local government to take land using eminent domain. But in this case we know that the purpose was to get the bruce's out of manhattan beach and to prevent more african americans from coming in. I mean a member of the city council at the time actually admitted to this twenty years later that they were worried that all the.

"All right so you're in california and you're trying to get a handle on this story right where you actually able to get in touch with the descendants of the bruce family. Yeah i mean they're actually relatively easy to get in touch with and one of the most prominent voices that's been telling the family story is my name. Is chief dwayne yellow feathers shipard. I'm a clan chief and tribal elder for the podcast tribe of the pocono kid. Nation watt upon reservation fall river massachusetts. So chief shepherd lives in l. a. And he's a distant descendant of the bruce family he's also an actor. I actually started in the industry here when i was six years old. My main claim to fame is that i did a one man show on the life of malcolm x. starting in nineteen seventy eight Until two thousand aims to about thirty top of that he has spent years trying to trace his indigenous heritage as well as the history of his black ancestors. Some moved to california one hundred years ago in the early nineteen hundreds charles. And willa bruce. And i'm assuming that charleston willow bruce are like the bruce right when we're talking about the bruce family. That's who we're talking about. Charles and willett bruce. Charles will bruce met in albuquerque. New mexico got married and at one child. Arvy charlesworth the real rule. The union pacific railroad on his trips in los angeles discovered that it was quite a land of opportunity for african americans. Certainly better in the way of whether than albuquerque. I'm sure with so this was actually something. A lot of african americans. Were doing at the time. Black people in texas louisiana throughout the south they would hop on the transcontinental railroad and head out west to elect to get away from jim crow south but also to find new jobs and build new lives in up and coming part of the country. And so it's around that time in one thousand nine hundred. Twelve when charles. Willa bruce by their own oceanfront property in a new city called manhattan beach repeat twelve hundred dollars for a lot. it was rural beach. Area was pristine beach. The view was just magnificent and was nothing but sand dunes around when they've got the property the immediately open up a food stamp really it was. It was more like a pop up tent. it was very small. It looks like it could blow over at any moment but it was a start. It was their first small business. So i have this photo of what the original pop up tent looked like. Oh my god is this will. That's willa what a boss lady look at that. She's wearing like a little jacket skirt and gloves and like a really nice looking hat pretty soon. The versus expanded. They added a couple of changing rooms in the back. This was one of the first. People came from san diego and other parts of california in order to enjoy the water for a few hours as the word got around to the african american community and south los angeles and other places. The participation in visitors grew the bruce's food. Stan was becoming so popular that they were able to expand the business by this point it. It looked more like a beach resort so it was two stories and you walk in their rooms to change your clothes and showers but then upstairs dining room and a cafe also has a few rooms where people can stay overnight and so versus beach ends up becoming really a draw for others to move to the area. You know they're coming. They're staying at the resort there visiting the resort and they're thinking like a like maybe could live here. Maybe we can have a place of our own here and so around this time at least four other. Black families purchased property in manhattan beach. Damn all right so so this sounds like it's it's becoming a party like this is the place to be. And the bruce's property is turning the entire area and sort of this burgeoning black neighborhood. Yes yes it's the neighborhood hotspot. But all of this activity attracted the attention of the city's white residents and it led to a backlash the disgruntled white. People didn't like the fact that they had opened this business. The los angeles times. I listen rose. Jefferson is a historian. That i talk to you based in southern california and she showed me this article that came out right around. The time of the bruce's opened their business. It's an la times article and it documents. The white backlash that was happening around that time against the bruce's an in the article. There's a portrait of willa. She's wearing a crisp white button down and in a long skirt. The article mostly centers around all these white people being annoyed and why they're annoyed with her for opening this business. But it does include one small quote from willa. That explains what she was feeling at the time that this is what she said wherever we have.

This city of manhattan any wrong a terrible wrong to black you over a hundred years ago today. La county officials and started the process of giving back versus to its rightful owners. The city of manhattan beach is yet to formally apologize. Ferrier's no reason to apologize. Do not want to ignore the past. Embroider.

It wasn't just the twenty twenty juneteenth picnic that started at all for kevin ward so and august. There was a protest in front of city hall And it culminated into a march down here to the beach. We had the support of black lives matter than the The local chapter and then also the international tractor and We burn sage through some flowers in the ocean to pay. Amish try ancestors and to pay respect for the dead. And the and the li- the people who were killed by by the hands of police So it was a very cultural experience and event it went off without a hitch after say. The last year has been very eye opening for me and I've seen a lot more. The community that i didn't know existed So that's kind of been very interesting for me personally. Lispier was the community editor for a local news outlet. She has lived in manhattan beach. Since nineteen ninety five. I was never against bruce's beach. It just felt like when you first heard about it felt like an assault for me. Personally i started writing about it in a diary you know but like it felt like an assault. Because here you are. You're live someplace you think of it in a certain way and all of a sudden people are telling you know you're racist her. There's this bruce's beach thing in your history. Well it just came hard at you for lispier. Learning more about what happened at bruce's beach was a turning point. You know. I can speak for me personally as a white person growing up in the south bay i've learned a lot just from watching kvant and the steps forward you know and as you learn more of the history and more of the story you can relate to it as a person. The racial reckoning hit different kvant ward the public protests she led fueled an online harassment campaign of hate against someone impersonated me and started posting things as if they were me in it for the lead people to believe that i was of a certain mindset in that i was a threat it got bad kvant felt. She needed to protect herself. Actually purchase the gun. Because i felt like i was in danger. I didn't know what these people are capable of doing. In the wake of these events the city of manhattan beach debated whether to issue an apology. To the bruce family. Many in the community urged their elected officials to do so. But those opposed came out in force. You have two minutes for your public comment. This was a hundred years ago. I pray my lineage. Doesn't have to apologize for my wrongdoings up today because there are plenty. I do not see racism in this town. I have multiple neighbors. That are all people of color and they are very very far more successful than me. Our town has much bigger priorities. Right now coercing. An apology out of the city. Today is not going to rewrite history. I also find it. Counterproductive in hypocrites at the people who demanded an apology and congestion hadn't racist past and present are the same people calling other residences racist white supremacist and conservative terrorists. In the end the city council agreed to acknowledge and condemn. What happened at bruce's beach but issuing a formal apology. The city council voted. No it was a gut punch for the people behind the movement for anthony. Bruce takes nothing to apologize for. Something that you've done or something that has been done against you if somebody's family member dies and you don't know that person you can say i'm sorry i'm sorry for your loss and that would simply just kinda bring a little east to the situation you know. That's the beginning of that forgets that beginning of find reconcile the relationship that that was torn apart in such a vicious and violent way for historian. Dr allison rose jefferson in the nineteen twenties chased the black people out of the city. That's what they did. And so yes. There is a through line because of the fact that the city council doesn't want to really acknowledge the fact that the institution and the citizens chase the people out in terms of you know an apology at this point in time that says a lot about you know the community the city of manhattan beach is now proposing changes to the plaque and agreed to create an art installation to acknowledge the history of bruce's speech as for the actual property. The county of los angeles in the state of california have moved forward on transferring. This land to the bruce family. The land where kevin ward sits today. My hand will continue to choke pen and force it to bleed until i am deceased into this country. Pays me all. They have stolen from me. And the black key lloyd scars. They've left on humanity..
Los Angeles County Seeks To Return Bruce’s Beach Property
"Southern California Black family could be getting back some property that was stolen decades ago. It's a strip of Southern California beachfront property that was seized from its black owners more than 90 years ago. Now lawmakers are spearheading efforts to give the land back. The landing question isn't Manhattan Beach, it was purchased by Willow and Charles, Bruce and 1912. They turned it into a resort for African Americans. If the plan goes through, the descendants of the Bruce family would get the land back. They would have the right to lease the land to L. A county. Steve Futterman. CBS News

"It didn't work out. Now. You're you're out. It doesn't even matter. I didn't believe Nick Foles was. Oh, my goodness. Like Some people on this station were advertising. They can hide from that fact. Now they know they are, but they've been and Nick socks. He's just He's very, very mediocre. He's a Buick. He's Jose Quintana. He's a Buick. Yeah, he's OK. We'll get you down to the jewelry will get your groceries. You go riding in style. I can't tell you that. And so as I looked at all of this Watch the play calling. Yeah. Okay. You're not really building anything. So it was really hard for me, Mr Positivity to look in the mirror and go. Hey, Idiot. They're not building a champion there like I look at the white socks and I go We're not there yet. Go at this or go ahead there building towards a crescendo. The Cubs were building. Not now. They were the Blackhawks when they had their core rolling as young guys they were building. No sorry. The late eighties bulls were building We're not building We're spinning our effing wheels. That's what we're doing. So admirable Cove it all of it. I love the effort. I love the culture. A enough, So that's why I came to that final realization and believe me, it wasn't done. In a willy nilly way it was with. This really hurts me to have to do this because I'm the guy that God forbid would be laying on my deathbed and the doctor said. You got 72 hours left. That's it, and I would figure there's a way out of this. We could beat this. That's just who I am. But you, But why can't you still be that guy? And by the way, I look forward to all of this is 1st 10 minutes. I look forward to all of this on NBC Sports Chicago when you doing post game Nonetheless, I am not. You're going to say any of that on. You're not gonna see any of that on TV. We'll break the game. No, you'll break the game down. But you won't be saying that to Alex Brown. How much you want it back. You won't be saying that after a loss. You might say that, but he's a white pizza. I'm going to say it on the pre game show. Oh, wow. Case of white peaches. Wanna bet on it, But I can't. I can't reciprocate that because we don't have that here. I can't I can't give you the money to get your old white beaches. But I can't do that. Give me some Bruce beaches. Your Honor, if I could interject here white Peaches is my thing with Hoody like Get your own thing That's like having a song with your wife And also all of the sudden you're song with your wife is my song with your wife. And by the way when you interject it's your Honor. May I approach and then I will allow you I said, your honor, I'm referring to Jonathan Hood. No, really. I'm actually the Supreme Court that overrules all of it. Well, I guess that'll never be changed. I am not rooting against the Bears because there's value and getting to the playoffs if you get there. I'm rooting for the Bears. You know why I cap? I'm rooting for the Bears because the defense deserves me rooting for and beers fans who support them. I'm re Fallon Robinson rooting for money I'm rooting for commit. I'm rooting for Santos for the players that want to get it done. For the players that give the effort. The max effort that we watched every game. I'm rooting for them because I don't want them to underachieve. Just because Matt Maggie's too, you know, is trying out dumb the room because Ryan Pace is not very good with talent evaluation when it comes to foriegn, ISI or trades. That's a problem for me, so I know you can't do it mid stream now. If you want to start the season say, Let's be the Jets and they just get Let's get Trevor Laurence or let's try to get a top draft pick. That's fine. But five and 11 doesn't get you exactly what you want, because even in the draft, you still need two or three offensive lineman in free agency need to a three offensive lineman. You've got to get better with your skill position players so You can root against the bears. All you want doesn't mean that you get to change that you're looking for and that means that pace and nag you're in this in a different spot if they're fired today doesn't mean that the Bears are Super Bowl team the next two or three years. It does. I don't want to go to the process off another head coach and general manager if I can help it. I don't want to deal with it right now. Your Honor. May I approach Yes, you may. I am not rooting for them Toe lose every game the rest of the way. Let me be clear it that what that ship has sailed. We were five and three. We're not getting Trevor Laurence. Whether you lose out or not, You could lose every game by a billion. It doesn't matter. I'm not. I'm not that guy. Like if we were Oh, and ate right now. Yes, I'd be that guy. I wanted to 2012 cubs to lose as many as they could to get a good player, And they did. They got Kris Bryant. My point is I'll watch evaluator Darnell Mooney plays like Jerry Rice the rest of the season. I hope David Montgomery looks like Wow, that looks really good. Hey, that guy we claimed off waivers That left guard looks really good. He's doing a good like I wantto watch those things. So let me be clear. I am not rooting for the Bears tto lose. That ship has sailed. My point is that if you and Danny asked me yesterday, Okay. You're the owner. How are you handling it? And as the owner of the team, a $4 billion asset that I would own. I would simply say to my coach, my GM my board of directors. Look, I appreciate everything you've done and I have paid you handsomely and I will pay off your deals. I just from my seat. See us spinning our wheels. We we want to Tennessee where? 63. It doesn't matter because that team my right eye in my left eye Schefty likes to say are my sources that team I've given you time. I've given you the offseason to fix Mitch and we got a better tight end room and we've got this We got it's not going to culminate in a championship is currently constituted. That's my point. I can't believe that she would do that to your friend Ryan Pace. I mean, what you're saying you're looking. You're looking for change, love? Yeah, I love you. And I've known you a long time. And if I bought a team and I hired you And were exceptionally close. And you brought Danny and Jeff in and I was at this point I go, honey. I love you, man. And I hope we can be friends. To the degree that Jerry rides Dorf and LaRussa stayed friends after he fired him, But I have a responsibility. It's a public trust with a football team. Our city spends tens of millions of dollars on memorabilia tickets when we get our lives back and their time..

"If you look at me and you listen to my show i always liked the team's not always was with great quarterbacks. That's not true. I don't like new orleans this year. They got a great quarterback. I don't always love teams with great quarterbacks x. I like teams that i like the g._m. Bruce beach in kansas city chris ballard in indianapolis bella check largely running new england howie roseman in philadelphia thom tillis go with the chargers by the way the rams. I live in los angeles. I've pushed back on the rams a little. I think they overpaid massively for brandin cooks. I don't don't like that contract and they paid todd gurley a year early they didn't have to. I didn't love that contract and i didn't say it after he got hurt. I said it before he got hurt. Why i japan a year early i think the rams when they eventually have to pay jared goff will have to overcome those bad contracts. This is my problem. Watch watch how the cowboys are handling the dax situation and then watch them a home deal in kansas city. You know it's going to happen one day in the next year. We're gonna make wake up. I'm gonna come to this show and he's gonna have signed a deal and nobody will have talked about it. Bruce feature of signed dealer like they already got it done. Just just like philadelphia did just like the colton chris ballard will do eventually to andrew luck okay. I don't even know the chargers deal with philip. Philip rivers like the way the cowboys are handling it is y. Always find them the hardest team in the n._f._l. To evaluate the owner. I know he's a good businessman but i think he's too meddling. Stephen jones is the best of the four but i don't know if he always has the final say jason jason garrett i like i think he's more than capable but not top five and dak somewhere in the middle of the n._f._l. Although i do i do think he has a leadership ship qualities. I don't think you can dispute that at this point so i the way the cowboys are handling. This is the reason i like the way the eagles handled their business with their quarterback and it's why i think they dominate the division for the next ten years your big four lenny segue to this. I am not a traitor. I do not check my 4._0._1._k. Regularly i don't try to time the stock market. Do dollar cost averaging every month. Send a check. I am a long term planner. Can that's how i think. That's how i was raised. That's what my dad was. I don't worry about how i feel this morning that i have a good month when i checked my t._v. Ratings i don't go day to day. I go year to year. Maybe it most quarter to quarter so i don't fall in love because somebody has a good week a good day a good press conference a good pass..

"Fan. Nine. Sixty six. And a low there. Everybody in good morning to your richardneer with you on the fan until ten o'clock this morning. Eighty c body, forty to talk Mets Sweeney Murdy from London all the way from London Colleen at nine twenty which would be what one twenty two twenty their time as we get ready for the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox to play in London. And we've got Pete Kennedy. Nice Boston name for you doing all ours, fear, technically and sitting in the co-pilot chair, and making this a, smooth ride until ten o'clock. And I gotta tell you, I am kind of cranky this morning. I don't know. I got up got enough sleep last night. Got up on the right side of the bed wrecking ball is doing extremely well, the new Riley king novels. Thank you for that. But it's. Baseball this year is not making me too happy. And I guess on one level. Looking at the Yankees say, well, I'll be happy. Look there the blown away the AL east they've got the tied for the best record in the American League away slightly behind the dodgers for the best record in all of baseball. But it just seems like it's too easy. And I'm not saying that they should tie one hand behind their back or anything like that. But it's just like okay they play today. They win today. It goes back to the old days. Remember that? And the Red Sox are firmly in the rear view mirror, and it doesn't look like they're ever going to really fire this year. Like they did last year obviously. And the rays are they went three of their last ten they're kind of falling apart slowly. The great pitching has only been the good pitching in the lineup is major league average. So they don't seem to be legit contenders. The best team seems to be the Minnesota Twins. But you know, we've, we've seen that movie before the twins come in all chesty, thinking, okay, we're good. And the is just say, oh, yeah. Kick them out of the way. So for the Yankee season, it's just like, well, wait till October. And I guess if you're passionately into every game and there's drama there is drama. They get behind come from behind. But it's sort of the same script when they get behind. It's like, well, just wait and eventually Sanchez three run Homer, or torus will or judge. It's I don't wanna say it's boring to win, but it wasn't there presidential candidate saying, you're gonna win so much. You get tired of winning. Well, it's kind of that. And and again I have asked key fans this before I said, would you rather have a tight pennant race where every game is is win lose? It's vitally important, or would you rather just blow away the competition during the regular season? So you can sit there and go, well, whatever we lose today. So what I'm not gonna lose any sleep. We still have a ten game lead. Rather be like that. And for met fans who can't relate to this at all. If you go back to nineteen eighty six when they won their division by twenty one games over the fills. Was that enjoyable now for the Mets? It was because they never do for the Yankees. It's like well they've done it a few times. So I'm not going to say that this Yankee season is boring because there's a lot of great stories. There's shelhah there's a Mayhew. There's the constant quest now for another starting pitcher. The rich get richer. But really, they're just mowing everybody now. Oh, god. They lost Toronto. They do that. And you're shocked when they lose the series, they lose a game you're shocked. So it's just a glide path until October. And, you know, there's not a lot of drama, and I guess most fans would rather have it that way. Let's go to the ballpark have a couple of beers. Enjoy a victory and just kind of look down your nose at the other teams go don't you wish you were us? And on the other side of town, the Mets, he's. Can you say they stink? The fire Calloway is really gonna help maybe a little bit in the beginning. But look at this guy and. What can he do? You talking about coaching pitchers. All right. They fire their pitching coach, the pitching coach trying to figure out what's wrong with some of these guys. But again, last night, perfect example, gazelle men now game is within reach gazelle machine comes in and all of a sudden the game is not really within reach. Now the ground pitches. Well enough to lose makes a mistake on a home run. And it's like cya and the Mets do things like load the bases with one out, and all they need is to make contact hit a fly ball, tie the score. What do they do strike out? Fly ball. You're out of the inning. No run scorer one run scored not enough. You know, so the offense and you can see this is the frustrating about last night. Macy's loaded and who's up Jeff McNeil Mr. contact hitter. Hit to the opposite field. Line drive anything and this guy always puts the bed on the ball. So what are they do? Throw him sliders. Dirty swings at a pitch that, that hits, it his ankles and strikes out. And then you've got Lonzo. And you know Lonzo having a good night. He's at home run in a single already, I'll doesn't continue fly ball inning over. And then the bullpen comes in and does what they always do. It seems which is blow the game out. And you know you get sold on this deal. Well, Robinson connotes a lot of money. But, you know, the guy still can hit hit three hundred or all right. If he's off you'll hit two eighty hit some home runs win some games for you. Play flawless defense and yeah, you gotta pay him a lot of money. But that was offset. We got what have shores AC who beat you last night. Everage a Bruce beach a couple of nights before get rid of those salaries, and you're getting a great young closer at Wendy's. Sixty one save opportunities Fifty-seven converted last year. He's already blown more saves than all of last year. And we're halfway through this, and his ERA is like seven over his last eight outings, and before he looks unhittable and the next day gives up. Two home runs in the ninth inning. After the Mets mount, a stirring comeback to maybe salvage one game in the Philadelphia Phillies series. It just gets worse and worse. And the sixty nine Madsen IDO Francis. A great line. You know, put them on the field of a better chance of winning than these guys would. Tongue in cheek. But that's the story. I mean they just can't put it together. And there's you know, there's always hope if you're, you're met fan, there's always hope lingering around the corner. Well, you know, they've got me Neil they've got Alonzo. I mean they've got guys who are much better than what they were putting on the field last year. Wilson romo's can hit anything out of catcher last year. Now, they're starting staff has been relatively healthy. Now, they've had a couple of little and MRs starts to guard. You know, but it's not the kind of devastating injuries. The Yankees have suffered. He had game after game this same script, you get an early lead. Wait till the bullpen comes in and blows it and other teams are like, okay, we'll just you know, run-up the pitch count with the starters, hit some fall balls. Get two hundred pitches and six innings and comes to Graham, and it was at hope that the six any well is at ninety nine pitches. If you can get an out here. Aby can go into the seven thinning and you can finesse your way through the rest of the game with the bullpen. Now runs up the pitch count in the six so he's got to come out and then gazelle men does his thing that if it's not doing his thing, it's Lugo doing his thing. For the and I don't even need to bring up the other guys. Wanna mention the other guys. Sometimes, I don't even know who they are, like, okay. Who's who do they bring up? They sit down. Know. Flex and still there. Nope. He's gone. Okay. We'll be back. And I actually saw the Syracuse Mets a couple of weeks ago in person. And Ruben a hot as at that time had fifteen home runs. A lot of RBI hit for the cycle that night as a matter of fact and gone. Well, we're going to do with Ruben to Hotta. He doesn't really fit into the template of what they've got now. And could he do this on the major league level has he something somewhat like or shelhah unlocked, the secret and all of a sudden become a hair? But what's that gonna do for you? You need pitching moped guys hang out him. So that's the state of New York baseball, one team just wall their way till October. The other team just kind of slowly sinking in the quicksand.
