Some of Edward Hopper’s Earliest Paintings Are Actually Copies He Made From a How-To Art Magazine
"Zoom in art history doctoral student of the court hauled institute in London has just caused quite a stir in the art world. was. Shadwick has discovered that at least three of Edward Hopper's early oil paintings are copies of other artists work. Two. Of them come from a magazine for amateur artists that was published before hopper's paintings of the same scenes and a third appears to be copied from Victorian painted porcelain plaque. Painting by Bruce Crane that appeared in the magazine, the art interchange in eighteen ninety called a winter sunset is nearly identical to. Eighteen Ninety, seven old ice pond at Nyack. A painting that also appeared in the art interchange in eighteen eighty, six called ships by Edward Moran is a near identical match to Edward Hopper's ships from eighteen, ninety eight. And the Victorian Porcelain Plaque based on an unidentified painting I think needs a little bit more verification but it does look just like hoppers 1897 church landscape. You can see all of these side by side in the New York Times article linked in the show notes. But a couple of notes on this Carter, foster hopper expert and director at the Blanton Museum of art in Texas notes that it's not at all unusual for artists of the time to have gotten their start by copying other works it was part of the learning process. But the problem is that much of the myth of hopper that he leaned into a bit while he was alive was that he had a preternatural talents especially evident in his early oil paintings that he created all on his own quoting the New York Times for Kim Canetti curator of drawings and prints at the Whitney. Museum. In New York where she is. At. Work on a big hopper, show the copying that Mr Shannon with revealed has more important repercussions. It cuts straight through the widely-held perception of hopper as an American. Original. She said as an artist whose innate genius allowed him to emerge on the scene without a debt to others. The only real influence I've ever had was myself. He wants claimed and quotes. And importantly, hoppers version of old ice pond nyack is currently being sold by an art gallery for between three hundred and four hundred thousand dollars. Will these revelations change anything about that price points and other sales of his early works? Showed wakes discovery is still in the process of being compiled and peer reviewed but perhaps, the market and hoppers legacy will shift somewhat in the near future. You know hopper's art has become a symbol of everyday life in mid century America his paintings brought to life the predominant thoughts and feelings of the time quoting again from the New York Times critics and scholars have always been intrigued by awkwardness that hopper allowed himself in many of his classic paintings sees that looked more painted than liquid in his famous groundswell, the Awkward Anatomy of his female nude in morning in the city or the stony faces of the diners in nighthawks. Now that we know that hopper was never a painting prodigy we can think of his later paintings as deliberately revisiting the limitations of his adolescence and finding virtue and power there. There's a classic move in American. Culture to see the unschooled in Homespun as more authentic and especially as more authentically American than the sophist stories of those decadent old Europeans end quote. And yet this is something I think about sometimes you know oddly for a nation. So deeply entrenched in its origins in the idea of the Protestant work ethic does seem to be this pervasive narrative throughout the centuries in. United. States that someone who is just miraculously gifted born perfect in a certain field or talent without help or instruction from anyone else is so much better. So much more deserving of being glorified than someone who Had to work hard at it who trained in grew over time maybe made some mistakes along the way not only does that do a disservice to the true fact that many people do have to work hard to perfect skills and talents and lead many to give up if they think they're not perfect at their first shot, but it erases the many people who help someone hone their craft and make it to where they are. Leads us to only praising leaders, celebrities, Star athletes, people in the spotlight and forgetting all about the people, the coaches, the teachers, the drivers, the medics, the operations, managers, the custodial workers, the domestic workers, the caregivers. Who Make someone's life like that possible I don't think there is anything at all wrong with Edward Hopper copying other artists as he learned his craft. But I do think it speaks volumes that he chose to or felt he had to particularly as he became this emblem of Americana Incarnate, hide that he had had any type of early instruction or influence, and thereby taking credit over these other artists instead of bringing them into the fold with him the New York Times mentions that part of it was so revolutionary and captivating about hoppers work was his depiction of average everyday life in America and they conclude I. Agree quotes. If. Hopper claimed to be an absolute original uninfluenced by others, his greatest paintings work hard to convey a different image of their maker. Their studied awkwardness asks us to imagine him as someone who might indeed have started his career copying someone else as just your average American working hard to make good end quote.

Giants need win, help to reach playoffs after loss to Padres
"There were 7 18 7 wins 18 losses against teams that were over 500. If you look at all the playoff teams there, eight wins 20 losses. How far can these Giants go? If they do get into the playoffs? And what are your thoughts against his three game Dodgers series? The first round if and when they get to l. A on Wednesday? Well, I don't know if anybody would pick the Giants to win that. I don't think it's it just it's just not not a reasonable way to think. I mean, the Dodgers were the best team in baseball there 25 games over 500 there one through nine with power hitters. They've got Kirsch on and bueller lined up. They got a bunch of right handed pitchers, you know, adjust in May and Johnson against the Giants, right handers. Stacks up really kind of comically. One sided, however, Marty, it's baseball, right? I mean, what's the point of serious when the first one, but if they be Kershaw behind behind God's man, I mean, you know, that's that's the great thing. They go in your record book? Look up. 1951 look of 1962. Yeah, and this is a you're going to write it. I hope it's Giants Dodgers. You'll write a great story that you will write an amazing story. About about how these teams have played before and how the Giants were written off before to the very last pitch, and they ended up winning and winning penance by doing it. So my feeling is Bruce. You got a lot of lefties. The Dodgers a lefty oriented. We've seen what Kershaw was done before. It's a baseball game. That's all it is. Anything can happen. Yeah, three runs in the first inning off. Kershaw is like, whoa, what's going on here? And all of a sudden, people say, Gee, we didn't see that coming. Yeah, and it's very I wouldn't say it's unique to baseball. But you know if you get an NFL Matchup kind of the best in the worst. He had a pretty good idea how it's going to come out or an MBA. The Lakers are playing a team that's you know, they can't win a game to save their life. If you had a fair idea, but the baseball and we've seen it so many times. You can just knock you on your own your song on your seat her off your seat. What's What is it? Something like that happens. It's the shock. That's it. Come on the Mets and the Orioles 1969. How about that? Yeah, the miracle Mets. They weren't supposed to get there. They weren't supposed to beat the Braves, then Henry Aaron, and they did. And then next next thing, you know, they win the whole thing. And you know Cleon Jones and Tommy and me and Tom Seaver and all of a sudden the team that have been so unbelievably bad. It's like, Wow, these guys are really good, and it turned out they They were very good for the for the next several years, But that was that was a miraculously kind of thing that you know it goes back to the miracle Braves, you know, back in 1919 14. That's correct, George Stone, the miracle Braves. Yeah. So The history of baseball. It's filled with great stuff like this and completely improbable development. So we will watch with great anticipation.
President Trump again refuses to commit to peaceful transition if he loses
"Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have unanimously passed a resolution. Committing to a peaceful transition of power. Should President Trump lose the election and refused to leave President Trump has not made the commitment to a peaceful transition. Trailing in several key battleground states and down by double digits in national polls, the president is casting doubt on a hallmark of American democracy. A free and fair election trump stoking unfounded fears about widespread mail in voting fraud. Tastelessly, claiming it's quote a whole big scam. But the president's own FBI director says he sees no evidence of that We have not seen historically. Any kind of coordinated national voter fraud effort in a major election. Whether it's by mail or otherwise. But Trump insists if he loses in November, it's because the system is rigged, and he is refusing to commit to a peaceful transition of power. Republicans are now scrambling to assure Americans they will respect the constitution but are largely silent on trumps merit list claims about mail in voting. People wonder about the peaceful transfer of power. I can assure you it will be peaceful. Democrats apoplectic You are not in North Korea. You are not in Turkey. You were in the United States of America. It is a democracy. Joe Biden has been warning that Trump might try to quote steal this election. His campaign says they won't let it happen without a fight, assembling a massive election protection program prepared to challenge any threats to the voting system in court, saying in a statement, they'll quote combat any attempt by Donald Trump to create fear and confusion with our voting system or interference. The Democratic process bite and the president are now both preparing for their first face off in next week's debate by didn't give us a little glimpse into his strategy. Undercutting Scientists, Trump Says Tightening Covid-19 Vaccine Guidelines ‘Sounds Like a Political Move’
"Tonight President Trump is now threatening to overrule the FDA if he doesn't approve of the FDA's tougher guidelines potential vaccine Dr Anthony Fauci saying tonight I would back scientists and now the state's this evening where they say they'll have their own review of the vaccine. Here's Mary Bruce. After Touting Corona virus vaccine by election day president trump is now threatening to reject stricter safety standards that could slow down. It's release once again, undermining his own help officials. We're looking at that that has to be approved by the white has we may or may not approve it That sounds like a political move tonight, four vaccines are in their final trials, but new rules from the FDA would reportedly require drug makers to monitor trial volunteers for an additional two months. Dr Anthony Fauci coming to the FDA's defense they look at it and say, we really feel strongly we should go this way I would back the scientists. We'd have to do that as a scientist Xiaojie said they may not need the additional monitoring if the vaccine is overwhelmingly effective but stressed if they go ahead with, it is only to ensure the safety of the vaccine to get rid of. Completely, any further waiting for safety I think most scientists would say, no, you really gotta be careful the FDA declined to comment on the president's threat, but just hours earlier testifying on Capitol Hill. The FDA. Commissioner was adamant they are being guided by science not politics are thorough review processes and science will guide our decisions. FDA will not permit any pressure from anyone to change that vaccine could be authorized as soon as next month, but it is not expected to be widely distributed until next spring with concerns that the White House is increasingly injecting politics into the pandemic response New York today announced it's going to conduct its own review of any vaccine. Frankly, I'm not going to trust the federal government's opinion. And I wouldn't recommend New Yorkers based on the federal government's opinion tonight at least five other states in Washington. DC have also said they would conduct their own evaluations before distributing a vaccine with two hundred and two thousand. Americans. Now, dead officials are predicting up to twenty three thousand more dead by mid October, and now we're learning about a large study out of Houston, that is. Not. Peer reviewed saying the virus mutated and could be more contagious. But so far there's no evidence it's more deadly, potentially a more contagious strain. But as you point out no evidence that it's more deadly in Mary Bruce amid all this talk, these latest headlines The president is threatening to overrule the FDA stricter guidelines in a vaccine and Americans are growing increasingly skeptical about all

Drug Addiction In America
"Woken to Mentally Yours Metro could ikaes weekly podcast about all things mental health. Today we're talking to Dave. Marlon, he was the CEO of crossroads of Southern Nevada, which was the largest addiction and Rehab Center in the area, the psychotherapist drug and alcohol counselor, and he basically knows everything about addiction and mental health issues in the US and beyond. Making me talking tim today about how the pandemic has been affected addiction issues to get help if you're struggling and how to recognize if you might have a problem with drugs or alcohol. Bruce Dave. Thanks so much for joining us on mental yours and welcome from across the pond. My first question was basically because obviously as I mentioned, we're in London. You're in the US, it such different situation in terms of addiction, mental health, and obviously the pandemic to get started. Could you give kind of a brief overview of the reality of addiction in the US? How serious the problem is that how widespread is a? The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation calls addiction the number one health problem in the US. If we look at the the number of prescription opiates that are consumed in the entire world The United States consumes more than eighty percent of them. We. have. You know we've always had an alcohol problem for a percentage of our population. we we developed enough and phetamine mean and a cocaine problem over the last. Twenty years, and in the last five, six years Oh actually even a little longer. An opiate problem has has become. Our most serious addiction challenge. Kind of the most common addiction issue that you see people coming into your center with. It it's interesting. I've run Iran the largest treatment center in Las. Vegas of. Gene. Years. And now as a private center and they're absolutely opiates or over my last three, four years, they're opiates was the number one drug of choice that clients had presented to solutions recovery without the opiate use disorder their primary. Primary substance. Now I work at an indigent facility in in downtown. Las Vegas where. More than half of our clients are homeless. And what's interesting is with this demographic, there's a much higher methamphetamine use. Would say my number one. Substance of for clients is nothin vitamin with opiates and alcohol running for a close second place. That's really interesting I. Think What was interesting that you said kind of opiates have been coming up over the lost six years because for me, it's felt like the coverage has been really recent like only in the last couple of years, we taught it to the opioid crisis this being a sudden kind of unexpected issue but you're saying it's been building for a long time. It has. Interestingly, fourteen years ago I was running the largest health insurance company in the state. And I remember in my last. My last year or two I remember looking at pharmacy reports and we were all scratching our heads saying what is this Oxycontin and why did it not show up two years ago and now I remember when across the ten million dollar mark at the Insurance Company for monthly use so it really begins began spiking. Thirteen fourteen years ago. It became. Newsworthy in fashionable. Six seven years ago, and now we're a were still squarely in an opiate epidemic.
New York Giants Confirm Saquon Barkley Tore ACL, Out For The Season
"There are terrible injuries all over the NFL yesterday alone. Nick. Bosa. From the niners Saquon Barkley from the giants both suffered torn ACL statistics show that through two weeks nfl record twice as many significant injuries as last year. It's actually at least six players suffered a torn acl including just recently Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin Eleven, injuries to starters in the one o'clock games alone John Do you think these injuries have something to do with the fact that there were no preseason games. Well. For example, the Rams don't play any of their starters in preseason games I think is in the spirit of your question i. think it has something to do with no camp no real camp they kind of shotgun training camp and I don't know how you could make the opposite argument that it has nothing to do with it. I wouldn't tied to preseason games what I would do it to the fact that there was very little tackling. Yes in. The game started and the other thing is I know Kyle Shanahan the niners felt like the field wasn't ready like the field I think he played in the meadowlands and he's got play there again next week because he played the jets and now he's GonNa, play the giants. Players on both teams going down. So I don't necessarily think that the facilities were one hundred percent prepared either I think again, I think the spirit of your question is the fact that they fast tracked everything and started the season. Because of Covid is that having any do with the injuries I don't know how you could say it doesn't I think it has to yeah. I mean I I completely agree I mean between training camp and preseason games where guys at least get a sense for what they get a reminder of what getting hit is like. I think they're I think they would be better off. It is an extraordinary number of injuries and none worse than Christian McCaffrey who's gone for four to six weeks and his the stalwart of my fantasy team just loyal to John Ireland how about? Yeah. I cleaned your clock thinking Matt Ryan. But. How about how about Saquon out for the year? Yeah. Entirely out for the year Bosa gone for the with a tornado. And that means that the giants I. It might be a race between the giants and the jets who the worst team football is. The whole new. York City area has to just garbage football teams because the jets are a mess and now the giants have no running game. So it's going to have it's going to have after-effects. All these

I show you going to say that we were going to like look we could be an item now. I'm just disappointed. Oh, I'm sorry. Now he's to you guys wouldn't match very well. He's back to blonde hair doughy eyed, you know, he still has his dreams and happiness. I was just that his way too innocent for you. You know, you just strip him of all of it off. I would fare. I tend to do this with all men though. Let's be real I tend to slowly take away their hopes dreams, you know their desk for Life their happiness any kind of happiness life. It's it's what I do to all the men that are in my life. Okay, so so that's your analysis which fuck off so that's no that's my analysis regards to jobber. Okay, my analysis in regards to the Browns. All right. Here's the thing about the Browns obj less. Always he had headlines Amy. Okay. This team has a boss ass offense page. There is no reason why they shouldn't be scoring touchdowns all the fucking time. I mean think about the players that they have Nick Chubb Fremont who both went off last night Jarvis Landry. I mean you couldn't get you can get that is a fantasy leagues dream right here, right? Yep. There is no reason why this team shouldn't be amazing because you know what their defense is really cool. Good to this team should be really competitive and making the playoffs and they're not understand now Grandma, who knows what's going to happen tell you what happened last night watching this game Baker Mayfield just he changed into a different person. Like when he like a human in a good way in a good way when he came off the field. He didn't go and sit down on the bench. He stood on the sidelines and watched his defense playing and then he I mean he rallied those guys. He was not going down to Joe burrow. I mean, you could totally he's like, there's no fucking way. This guy's going to show me up and there's no way I'm losing to the fucking bangles and you know what he totally carried his team. He really truly did stepped up it was offensive. Now if they can do that every single weekend this team is really like it has all the weapons that it takes to be a fantastic team which made me. Made me Ponder the fact that there's some teams that you just expect to lose and then there's some teams that you expect to win like the team's you expect to when you expect the steel real attacks right now. You expect the Cal you expect to win. You don't expect the Lions or the Bangles or the Browns. I mean the low-hanging fruit, you know, you don't expect those teams to win. So when they have when they have rosters long, the Browns have their own turning into a team that you they should be winning with what they have. So it sounds to me that the Browns are basically like if you're looking at it from a fantasy league point, it's the guy in league who basically cheese his way to get the best team because everybody else is internet either sucked or they were on auto draft or they forgot there was a draft right? That's the guy in the if you're equating it to a fantasy team roster birth. Okay. Number one. I liked it. You know I prematurely said shut up about the Cowboys cuz I thought you were going to say that you expect them to lose and I like that you're saying that you expect them to win because that's what you do you absolutely suck. Oh you that's what we do problem. That's where we are a we are an elite Lord team. Anyway, that's what you're going with I am. Well, I don't know the baker Mayfield is still a shitstain to me so good for him rallying his team. He's still a shitstain. I do love his Progressive commercials their home like the latest one. Yes. They are the latest one where he's like. Oh, it's getting ready to rain. Help me cover the furniture. And two guys like you mean the stance he's really good in those commercials. If you could only be as good a quarter as he is in those commercials. We would be set the dog pound would be set. Well, we are you a dog pound or now. I mean, I you know, I have a soft spot for the Browns just cuz they always lose. And ever since that movie came out draft day with Kevin Costner yet. Oh, I'm out. I'm done with you. done with you Amy. Your brown spot is showing. I know I know you know, I just I'm weird that way I don't understand it. Either it is I don't either try to figure you out every day and I just you know, I do too and since I'm like, oh I get myself today and then sometimes I'm like now he's nope don't understand myself today, but that's okay. That's most of us as well. Amy. So rest assured you're not in Company by yourself. I think it is twenty-twenty it is. Okay. Well that's sad because now Joe burrow Hollow be his name Falls 200 and two. Yeah, it does and but you know what this guy he's he's a good quarterback. He is is there he should be in his helmet I think time to get mr. Guys. Sometimes he tries to carry his offense which isn't great because then he gets pummeled by pencil like he got pummeled last night several times. Well, you sure. Why does LSU brain sure what he's trying to win? And I totally get it. But at the same time he needs careful because you know, oh, he's a starting quarterback in the NFL. Well getting them know and you just see a lot of what he was doing at LSU that worked and I think you know like every rookie has this learning curve right where you come out transition from college to the big leagues and it's like, oh, okay, it's funny cuz I was like really different style of football right? I said to Bruce last night. I'm like, surprised that they just threw this guy in the deep end. I mean they just started. Oh totally, I mean, they didn't granted he dangles. What else do they have? I'm. That's the problem. They don't have anything else but you know like places in my where to get backing up Fitzpatrick that makes sense. It makes sense for him to kind of, you know way into the NFL same thing with Dwayne Haskins, you know, he he was back up for a while until he kind of learned his name. Yeah, now Joe girl, man. They just threw him in the deep and they're like here you go, bro, you go bu. Yeah. Well, you know what gotta he is trying I mean, he's playing his ass off out there. No he is but he is and that's why I'm like super team Joe burrow like we gotta do this man. Like I'm telling you. It's the stogie. We'll do it get this guy that mean that you're a Bengals fan know how fucking no. No, I like. Oh bji in a Browns fan. I like Joe burrow Ina Bengals fan, you know, I will always bleed silver and blue Amy. That's the only color I would leave home. Anyway, let's move on to the Chiefs. Okay, love us and Pat Mahomes you love some Andy Reid do that cheaper mofo back, right? So Andy Reid's big old windshield mask that he had on. When was it last week? I can't remember. Yeah. We're only in week to segregated windshield wipers. Yeah, so people were like what the hell and so like it was fogging up. You couldn't see shit, but this may be a thing. This may be a thing coming to a coach near you because off on the first Sunday of the NFL season when this happened several coaches were seen either one not wearing masks or to not wearing them properly because the mask police were out and the league is not going to stand for that. It's currently vice president of football operations. Troy Vincent issued a memo this week saying protocol requires all individuals with bench area access including coaches and members of the club medical staff to wear face coverings at all times failure to adhere this requirement will result in accountability measures being imposed against offending individuals and or clubs. However, Amy, there is no word on what those accountability measures will be so that to me that phrase is what kind of sticks out to me. What does that mean? do you do find them? Probably I mean you can look dead. Here's the thing. They're coaching on the sidelines of talking into Mike's they have to be able bird they have to be able understood. It's really hard for all of the to happen on your face plus all these guys are around each other all the time. They're all you know, I practiced together around the field. They're hitting each other all in each other's faces, you know, I mean and how many people have tested positive since the start of season one? Yeah. They did a very good 2700 players so very good job with with that right off because like you said, they've been implementing measures. They've been following the rules, you know, they've been testing a lot, you know, we got into this, you know leading into this actual season. Jeez, how many coronavirus updates that we talked about on this podcast about hey, this is what the League's doing. This is what they're making them do kind of thing. So something is clearly working. It's really great to see that that's positive news that you know that they're only seeing that wage. Chat, I think I that they should I really think they should go with a handy read mask to be quite honest can still see the coaches face. The microphone can kind of be up underneath it. So they may be able to understand what the coaches saying and and you're shielded. You know, when somebody comes up to your face, you know, I mean, think that that's fine but having to wear them like when it's just, you know covering your face in your nose again, like it's hard for me to understand people when they're wearing a mask and talking to me. Yes, I mean, so imagine imagine being on the field the quarterback coaches saying the guys in booth coordinators up in the booth are trying to understand what the guys on the field coordinators on the field are trying to say, I mean, it's just it's a it's crazy. So it's a shitshow you gotta be able to walk. You gotta be able to your job. I would take that looking like I've got the windshield of a Camry in front of my face the whole time vs Lee having something on my mouth cuz that's frustrating me. Yeah. Give me the telephone number. Windshield all day long over the you know, suffocating face masks which by the way speaking of Tesla. Did you see that their reports of some them being janky like getting like parts that were like really cheap shity on some of the Tesla's that were falling apart marvelous. I know so yet twenty-twenty doesn't happen. Just wanted to put that in there for you. All right coming up next in offsides, you know fall like we said is upon us. Although you wouldn't know here in Texas. It's still like an anus outside but here's something for your home that will make it fall feel less anus e okay Mom handles some new ones that are coming out and they're actually already out and we'll explain to you with those candles our next. All right, let's get into offsides and we've got some candles to tell you about so Amy, yeah, you know football's back. So if you want to get a little piece so that game day experience at home along with fall. This might work. Okay. I know you love candles. There's a company that's owned by Anheuser-Busch call Babe wine. They just created three football scented candles one smells like an artificial turf field. Okay one smells like a Nachos not bad and one

A conversation about Mulan
"Low, and welcome to another edition of they call us Bruce unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asia America I'm bill you and I'm Jeff Yang and this will indeed be an unfiltered podcast. It is one which we are going to used to. You know spend talking about something that we've been wanting to talk about for a while waiting to see for awhile, and that is Disney's live. On which released this weekend right before Labor Day and immediately generated quite a lot of opinions some of which we have. And we have guests, schools, opinions in some of them our guests We've seen quite a lot of in somewhere new. Who have with us? Phil? We have making her third appearance on they call US Bruce. Quite possibly a record. Record record. Our good friend formerly journalists of the with the Hollywood reporter most recently, she did a profile of Tima in Vanity Fair. Are Powell Rebecca Son Rebecca. Welcome. Thank you. I'm here to reinforce and ensure that my title as most frequent they call us first guest. On. Challenged. Bring honor to us all. We also have a first timer on the show hopefully, not the last frankie. Hong who is a freelance writer and illustrator and Frankie also grew up until age nine in China and has a pretty solid grasp. I think of some of the larger context around the film both as somebody personally in in more immerse perhaps in Chinese culture than those who grew up here but also just from being able to read and understand the conversations that are going on in. Chinese about this. Conversation's. Break Welcome, to the show. Thank you for having me. So excited to chat with you about this. Well, the conversation has been proceeding Apace has a not I mean literally the show. The movie itself debuted Friday, and I think that's we don't have any metrics yet that feels like a lot of people in have been streaming it despite the way that it's being presented and I mean, maybe that's the first thing to talk about a little bit like. The film. You know how the film has changed over time how it was what was meant to be in where it is now today in this time of Of Covert in quarantine in theaters basically being shot I think I wanted to ask if maybe everybody could share their relationship with the original film because that's that will serve you know color a lot of people's. The way they perceive this this new one right. Rebecca. What was it like watching the original Milan and how did that impact actually shape? This one for you. Yeah. Well, for me, I you know sort of your classic ABC asian-american Crawl one in the bay area you know live here lived in America, my whole life, and so I was I'm looking this up now and I was actually not cured with anime tomatoes teenagers. So I think I was sixteen when I came out Even, though I was no longer a small child I, what I remember most palpably was bursting into tears at the end of the animated film when Milan she's at the Forbidden City and she turns around and it feels like the entire country is kneeling and bowing and Reverend before her and the swell like I remember for years after that, like you know even without we watching the film just thinking about that moment. Just swallow emotion. Kind of being unprepared to see that image of of somebody who representative you know about as exactly. Who I was, you know just a small Chinese girl could be treated with such respect and honor. Listen. you know and reverence that was so moving. So that's what I remember most about you know the animated law and I think the way that made me feel is is sort of what I treasured about that movie even though it was, you know I haven't seen it in such such a long time.

"Right let's get back to it. Tony Cologne Riazan. What are your thoughts on the Raven character especially his. Ac W do you think that his running wbz could have been handled better if they would have given him similar creative? I think if it had been new maybe I think that the Raven character when it was introduced in two e c from day. One was intriguing as hell. I thought it was great and there was a mystique about it by the time that they had done all their Chris. Fish crucifixion angles. And it had gotten as dark as had gotten. I think it'd counter run. Its course in just didn't think that and just really didn't think it fit and It was great it was a great character for EC. W and they did well with it but beyond that. I don't know that it really fit any other company and that was. I don't know that Scott was always As quick to want to modify that character to to make a change in he did that off of how well it worked in DC. W When I came in because it was unique it was different and I thought it was cool. Shit in the beginning Michael Scott Fairy rights. And I can't remember if you discuss this but I listened to recording the steroid trial transcripts on. I believe it's fences attorney. Laura Brady who uses the phrase rumor and Innuendo rumor and innuendo multiple? Times is your use of rumor and Innuendo a nod to Vince his attorneys. That is a fun question. I guess we've ever really dug into before as that That maybe where you first heard that phrase no. I don't ever remember hearing it. I know I've maybe I did subconsciously. But now ruined innuendos just yet hit with it so much that people read shit of false reporting all this other bullshit. I mean that's a phrase. You Know Reverend in Iran though yeah. It's just something that that you get hit with a lot when you look at something that somebody says some teams. That's a fucking rumor or they the innuendo oven. It's just crazy. Spanish time right said in his prom. How many roads get dusty rhodes dust if dusty rhodes could dust roads it does it could death row? Death would be nothing minute. Or is it a case of future endeavors and I'm sure this comes from You and I have discussed before when there was a professional rivalry between triple h and the Rock and he gave the advice to the rock rock. It's live TV and it was just sort of understood with the Lincoln and now I'd go get over as dusty used to say something like that still exist or it's just different time and place now I think it does. I think that there is that opportunity in what I mean by that. Is You take the opportunity where you're out on live television and everything is live now so go out and get over go out and make whatever material and whatever opportunity you're given making your own to make it the very best it can be go get over four last ones here. Now we got two days and Gronkowski host and who knows what next week is GonNa look like but we know that by God. We are here today and we've got a bunch of fun questions we're gonNA fire them off. It's a Hashtag. Ask Bruce Anything. One of my very favorite episodes because we just get to shoot from the hip and cover a lot of ground bruce. We had nearly thousand questions asked. There's no we'll get to them all. We'll try to fit as many as we can. We're GONNA hit them rapid fire. Are you ready? Yama cabinet three three questions that's it. She upped all right well. Let's let's do all of our commercials. Here's Charlie thrower. He says not to break FEHB. How good is Bryant Ban absolute dream? He is a fabulous talent fabulous. Human being and one of those that you enjoy going to work with. He also has a few other questions here. We hear about her being the locker room later. Does that apply with female talent if not who is or was the locker room leader for the ladies? That's an interesting question. I don't think I've ever seen it but together that way. You know what neither native I would say. That locker room leaders were locker room leaders and take her. Was You know for back. Let's call it in the back And take her was leader for everyone. He didn't discriminate and that was for women men and everyone in between so there wasn't a separate you know we didn't have man's later women's leader. I think that Those stepped up they. They stepped up and they go In your opinion what gimmicks from the past could work today as a reboot dog decline on be fucking phenomenal Sometimes it's it's easier as you look back to to say what wouldn't work. I don't think brother love would today. I don't think that in this PC climate in which we live that that kind of edginess and he really wasn't that edgy. I mean I guess when you look back. It might be a little edgy. But they were different times. I'm not sure that that could work today. And I'm not sure that people would gravitate so much to a Papa Shangluo or even a definitely the I'm trying to get the fucking like the T. L. hoppers occupation Matrix gimmicks. Some of the some of those some of them would work frankly and some of them still. It's funny when people critique that but then you look out on the independence and you've got people that portray a lot of different You know I mean good God. Could you imagine you know dentist Gimmick in things like that Dr Isaac Gangnam that but it could work? I love for that. A ski from moving here Another fun question. Last one from Charlie this way. He writes Who has the bigger fear Yoko of Andrea snakes or Bruce of pickles? Oh God bruce a tick i. It's fear so hatred as I am not afraid that pickles gonNA attack me or anything. I just don't WanNA smell. Cnn or touching yeah. It's funny because a lot of the barbecue places in Alabama they will bring you like Put Sauce on on your order if you get a plate as they call it and then over in the corner sometimes they'll put like some Coleslaw. Maybe a half a scoop or something and then a couple of pickles is like garnish almost and even though you would say no pickles. Occasionally they would put pickles on yours. Straighten trash yeah. It's disgusting not matter of fact my son and I went out to eat the other day and got an Eye Talian sub. Now you read everything that's on the sub and it tells you everything that's on it. One thing doesn't say this honors pickles and there were no pickles on the sub self however being an Italian Deli man they brought out a fucking pickle spear on the side of the plate and I immediately like took my fork inflicted off on the canes play and now his reaction was fear tax rates yet when he hates pickles to he's not fond of them but then but then you'd have to get the Napkin and you have to soak up all the Jews so the pickle. It's gross man. Pickle juice grosses nothing good about pickles. I should be. They should be outlawed. Awful Jesse writes in. Do you think when Vince McMahon eventually passes away hopefully one hundred years from now that he would wanna turned into a storyline. Somehow wow that's that's a good one. Probably not no. I think that would in his mind. I bet you that he would probably just want to go away. And have everything. Go on without missing a beat Mayhem rights on the rare occasions. Maybe family vacation. Is there a time when Vince is thinking about business? What does he do for fun? Does he have a hobby? Does he collect anything? What NON-BUSINESS SUBJECT? Would Vince ever talk about loves to work out? Get a pump on his. Do Sir well Pope you've got. It's funny then because you guys have nothing in common with him just wrestling working out..

Like I went into my giants such as when you when you do comedy and especially when you're young and you're just trying to everything you just try to maker Acre away for yourself and I can remember years ago about twenty eight years ago. I wanted working in his job. North Carolina one time and are more stays doing jokes folks and I'm making all these faces sprays. Hey it's still hosic live in Houston Texas from Chicago originally from Pennsylvania longtime listener Bruce Happy Birthday on his upcoming seventieth birthday day about a month after my sixtieth birthday so he's got ten years on me and just a couple more hit songs than I may have the key thing. I think that I've taken away from the whole experience. The last ask fifteen years and driven partly by Jesse's podcast and a whole bunch of other things is just a great number of Bruce Friends. We have both locally and around the world I mean we're going to the rolling stones show tonight here in Houston. Last night I hung out with the one of my best friends who have met from Bruce. Shows got friends in Chicago and Dallas Fort Worth and Portland in Sweden and all over the place and it's from traveling around and meeting people people who all have the same obsession with just a great time good music a great story songs that means something and I've I've been blessed to be able to do that the last few years and look forward to a big tour next year and seeing some of our friends as we go around the world. It's been enjoyable beyond just as podcast a couple couple of times. I know one time Jeff from Fort Worth and our on and talked about shows we've been to and how we met and all those things and it's been interesting as the as our electronic onic fan world has changed how much we know people from other places that we may not know or we ended up meeting them you know last show is that was in Chicago and and met people that I didn't even know were connected to people that I did know that we're all on twitter feeds or someplace else so it's been great. Bruce has just been the basis of all my music listings and listen to a lot of that Brian Koppelman podcast and almost every person comes on there. That's a music person talks about how Bruce Bruce inspired them so it's not just normal fans but it's the other people who are really really talented as well the look on his work so we've been blessed to live in his era. like a younger lady told me when we were seen the rolling stones in Chicago last month you guys have all the good music and when you think about it we really have been blessed Rolling Stones and Beatles Bruce and and who and a million other bands and people that are in their forties or go on we don't have any of those good names and it's been enjoyable and afford to tour and twenty twenty and seeing all of you out on the road have a great day hi my my name is Karen Akers Semi K Barton. I currently in in Australia but I'm orig- originally from England northwest. Nice cars to England plays Co Blackpool for me. My junior into discovering Bruce springsteen started with Patti Smith. I bought her album eastern. In of course Patty imbros collaborated on because the night back in the day when we listen to vinyl we could read the record sleeve unlearn about the artists read the lyrics etcetera so intrigued when I realized Bruce Springsteen career written because the night I started to explore Hubris springsteen was the first opportunity I had had to attend a live concert with may nineteen eighty-one Manchester Apollo the original river tall that leg of the toll was of course we rescheduled from March to May as Bruce got sick and needed some time off anticipation had been building building and building a sense of disappointment when it was rescheduled but then may finally came by the time the Shari had had arrived. I bought the back Catalogue of Bruce Final on was well and truly bruce springsteen being fanatic river tall had been in full swing across the USA your since nineteen eighty all the music papers. I was reading Dan anime sounds record mirror were full of reviews detailing the energy the power the fools the rock and roll that is Bruce springsteen and the e street band Manchester Paulo came alive that night fairly eight years ago we were. We really prepared for what we witnessed. I'm not too sure we were bruce. Commended the stage the ban the music on us the fans from the very minute. He stepped on the foot of his platform Bruce Letters. There's through stories of his childhood. He's adolescence. His relationships Gordon bad he led us through the difficult times and happy at times. We sang along along. We screamed shouted clapped Fist Punch. The air we cried laugh danced in Hong off every word every chord what's every riff and every one two three four it was without doubt the best thing I'd ever witnessed. It wasn't adjusted. Music was the honesty in which bruce and the e street band perform. It's the generosity of their time their engagement in connection action with those the songs the sentiments the stories Roberta's we've lived stars lives of difficult relationships of hard work disadvantage segregation love and loss. Yes we relate we connect we understand there were sparks out on the streets of of Manchester for that night that night the shore what else can I say but thank you bruce and the East street band and a happy seventieth birthday to the man who has that special magic trick that can fails all logic where one plus one equals three. Hey Bruce Edrich Haski here in Madison New Jersey congratulations on reaching seventy and also on the new album another record with a new sound love at all but especially that first song attacking you know me but you've been running along with me and my family for a long while been with us for a lot of fun trips but also some unexpected detours and over some rough highways highways. You've been great company and comfort all along. It's nice to know you're still there talking in our ears. We ain't dominique care that anytime soon. That's for sure. Keep doing what you're doing all the best and happy birthday from US down the shore. This is Jeff Smith from Melbourne Australia calling to join Jesse's Bruce Bruce springsteen seventieth birthday project for the podcast. What a great idea. "Everyone and welcome to a new episode of Set Leslie Bruce Your podcast all about Bruce springsteen. His music and mostly is fans. I am your host Jesse Jackson. We are doing another tiny weiming episode where it is my morning and my guest afternoon Liz is joining me. She just tried to teach me how to say her full name and she kindly said it. Just it just say Liz Liz. Welcome to the show. Thanks very much gig guest so now we're where're you calling from. I'm calling from Konia which is a city way up in north of the Netherlands homed home very nice. I always love getting a guest <hes>. I don't think I've had anyone from Holland yet so that's pretty cool. I'm relieved you do <hes> from Elko. He's from my Bunko. That is right. Yes see now. I have to edit that part out as I don't want to harass you know my buddy so he's the one who recommended you right yeah. Yeah yes the the only place to go for <hes> to get all the information about the shows you you've attended the shows you wish of attended <hes> that I'm amazed every time I go to that website just the amount of work it takes the Keith that up and it's just and I know he does it as Labor of love <hes> but it is an and he was so kind to be on the show. We had a great time so yes now. I'm now. I'm embarrassed. You shouldn't be homeward but that's okay. That's that's part of the charm of settling Bruce Bruce the things that <hes> I miss speak about so liz. We always liked to start out with the year <hes> beginning so talk about growing up. What kind of music did you did your family listen to what did you grow up listening to <hes> I grew up in small village in <hes> in Holland and there's always music and my parents were put on the radio as soon as they got up in the morning and they ah when we went to bed that's when they turned the devices off which was perfect because for me and my sister that was a perfect way of getting to know the music daylight but they also let us free in <hes> exploring our our own music or <unk> discoveries <hes> and my parents they tend to listen to a lot of <hes> John Hiatt R._e._M.? Eagles like the seventies eighties music okay Liz. I gotTa Stop You. This is the first time quote unquote in the wild. I've heard someone mentioning John Hiatt growing up so yeah yeah <hes> to give you my background on. John Hiatt my started dating my wife <hes> obviously she wasn't my work we start dating in nineteen eighty and she had a a friend named Rick Lewis go who adored John Hiatt and the C._d.. Slug line and so <hes> I'd never heard of them so when I started dating him we became you know I kind of Washington. In fact for our rick died a few years ago and so for the first couple years you know Lindy couldn't listen to John Hiatt without crying and for our thirty fifth with wedding anniversary and my sixtieth birthday we went down to Austin Texas and John was playing acoustical show and we watched it and like three songs in Linda reached over to me the seat next door was empty and she said Rick sitting here watching with us and I got all touchy and kind of missed the I <hes> so I immediately love your mom and dad if they're listening to a lot of doing it so <hes> they just listened that just was one of the someone they enjoyed listening to <hes> yeah it was I mean I'm not even sure but I guess they have all all his albums in whenever he came a two incomes to Holland they'll tend to shows we join so last time. Was I believe last year and it's still amazing brings back all the memories from your use. We know all the songs <hes> <hes> C._M._o.. Parents have been quite good taste of music yeah they do. Do you have a couple of favorite John hiatt songs seat now listener. I warned Liz beforehand that we will go off on tangents. She has a whole list of Bruce Breathing Questions Shinsei given her and then I turn a curve and I start asking about John Hiatt verbally people loved them. Hi Michelle right if they xactly absolutely so one of my favorite songs is I love perfectly perfectly good guitar. Oh yeah absolutely it's kind of a rock song <hes> but also lipstick son said ethylene owner so many guy no that's great I <hes> I <hes> someone was <hes> you know they've used have a little faith in me and so many movies and he is talked about if he had you know a quarter for every time someone <hes> played have little faith in me at a wedding. He'd be a lot richer. You know <hes> you know at this last show. It was so funny <hes> he said I WANNA give shot up to my favorite redhead. He said <hes> Bonnie Raitt recording the song helping put two kids through college and so are you ready for this thing called love he saying it was just fun story to here and then in a few years ago <hes> it's been more than that now <hes> he was playing at a show here and my friend Rick and his second wife <hes> he and his might my my watt one of my wife's best friends was his first wife in the when they got divorced. They always joke that <hes> rick got custody of us in the divorce. <hes> we stayed friends with Rick and not as much with Jennifer and then and unfortunately or fortunately when you look at it when he passed <hes> Linda and Jennifer came back together and kind of you know yes so was yeah she <hes> in anyway so we were there with Rick and and <hes> in his his wife Beth Linden I in <hes> John talked about the night before he played in Houston and <hes> a lot of <hes> astronauts from NASA had came to see him and they told the story that they played blue telescope <hes> up in the space shuttle. Oh really yeah when they they were up in there. They played telescope and so he he said and I was so honored to hear them tell that he said and then I forgot to play blue telescope on this show. He said Song playing it tonight in honor of my friends from NASA so cool he is a very cool guy and I really WanNa Wanna go see his daughter Lily heard of her yeah she that's his it's the daughter from his first wife. The one who committed suicide and then he has to other children <hes> <hes> from his current wife and they've been married forever. He talked about <hes> <hes> he mentioned <hes> real kind of love and he dedicated to her because they'd been married thirty two years <music> but lily yeah you should do Goo Google search and look for she she has she's a little more twangy than John Yeah but <hes> she's it's definitely you can you can hear the roots in it so very cool okay in the tangent so your parents not only listed John Height some other kind of music and it sounds like you embrace it all yeah I did. I mean they never force it upon us on my sister me but somehow I embrace it and I just I loved it from start and when I was was thirteen yes thirteen. My parents bought the Bud D._V._D.. The End <unk> live in New York City from some guy named Bruce springsteen. I didn't know him. My parents didn't have as much music off him as they did off like Jackson Browne Eagles. John Hiatt <hes> but they bought this D._v._d.. <unk> my dad. He put it on as like the guy from born in the U._S._A.. He's like yeah yeah. You should listen to it. It's quite nice and from that moment I was hooked at just. I'm not sure what happened in my brain but something clicked leaked and I'm not sure if the D._v._d.. Still worked right now because of played it so much that is awesome an you know. I'm so glad you mentioned that because you know I often ask my guess you can you tell me why his music spoke to you so much and you've kind of saying right the beginning I it just did it is hoping about him yeah. I'm not sure what it was. It was the energy the effect that you're sitting in front with T._v.. Berthier Dad which is pretty special <hes> I remember vividly that out in the street was my favorite song to to listen to into watch because he kisses a woman in she's in stand somewhere and he walked right up during his case like wow at school that you like that you're an artist and you connect with your crowd. In search away from that poignant went either one appeal of course not downhill with the Bruce Addiction did <hes> how did you did you just start going getting one release at a time or how to feed that <hes> addiction or obsession down how you WANNA call it right. Yeah might be an addict. I'm not even sure what yeah I guess it's an addiction. It started off of course with the D._V._d.. And that was back in two thousand two yeah and then I heard that he would perform in Rotterdam in dekalb which is a big soccer stadium <hes> in May of two thousand three and my mom actually got my dad. Emmy tickets afford it showed so that was my first ever concert I went to it was with fifty thousand people in and we were way up in <unk> stands. It was kind of horrible places but it was the best concert ever now. <hes> how old are you at this time I thirty now. I'm sorry when you're first show Oh what I what I show as fourteen how funny and and there's gotta be something Special About Your Dad and you sing together. Yeah I mean your mom and dad your mom gets you to the tickets to send you <hes> on the father daughter trip yeah that that is awesome I am the <hes> Chris is my son and he had had never seen bruce and <hes> the river tour came through <hes> it was coming to Oklahoma City in Dallas and Oklahoma City's just a few hours drive and so I said hey do you want to go see him with me and it was the same night as Wrestlemainia. I don't know if you are familiar with you know professional sports entertaining but it's it's a big deal for a lot out of people <hes> in fact. I'll I'll tell you a wrestlemainia story in a minute and so it was actually here in Dallas and my son is a huge wrestling fan in fact his story that you would tell is when he was about ten or eleven he and I went down to Houston which is about three or four hours south of Dallas and we get we went and saw wrestlemainia together and <hes> I had no interest but he wanted to go and so he still he's now thirty and he talks about that trip fairly often about how much fun it was so <hes> so he gave Wrestlemainia to go watch bruce with me and on the way back <hes> I you know I turned on the recorder in he talked about how much he enjoyed the show and then <hes> then we went to New York together to see him and then he was sold. I Mike he's asking all the time Linzie touring again Wednesday so I know you. You're supposed to ask me questions. No No. I'm Kinda curious. How's IT feels of dead that he gives them his wrestle match to join you to referencing Liz? It was so I I was so touched and then <hes> you know and I really was a lot of pressure like you don't have to like this. Just because I do uh-huh I I you know and and it's it's worth listening to <hes>. I may put a Lincoln to the show notes because you know we did we driving back <hes> in the car. I hit forget we just talked about the show and he talked about on Presley was and and he started going and then <hes> he started listening more and more and so now than <hes> he he's become a pretty I mean he isn't obsessed. The way you and I are <hes> but <hes> he's a pretty big fan and he will often <hes> like he thinks my hometown is is one of his favorite songs okay you know he <hes> he says out in the street which always laugh he loves that song because the lines and on Monday when the foreman calls time yeah already got Friday on my mind he says dad. There's not a person working. That doesn't have that feeling on Monday morning true. I don't care if you're the C._E._O.. Of the most successful company the world or your guy or gal making minimum wage. He says when that's <hes> here in here in the U._S.. This may not be the same reference for you but <hes> sixty minutes is a news program that comes on every Sunday night here in America and MHM their their logos.

No, not five but anyway, Bruce goes back well known that I got very weak. Some Bruce goes back to Pat bathroom. He lays one he lays one out for for all ages. So. Briscoe. Don't you have to go the bathroom there? Waiting for me to go the bathroom. So I get up and I gotta go relieve myself go off, and there's ever wear. So I saw vomited and come out and they're all laughing made Bruce Bruce, Bruce would do anything that's asked him to do. And, and some of the things wouldn't ask him to do, Pat. You remember the time when he cleared a hotel and Boston, Massachusetts for two nights in a row. I think one night was in your room and he had up and the fire alarm went off. The next night he comes to my room. I think I'm getting the story right. Not. What's not truth under story at the delivery of store. Okay. And my sore almost on my way. Should I put in? Aac to hair net out put over the fire extinguisher. Oh, pretty Britain, Brutus and hope told me how to do that. They do it whether you know, it's right. Where'd you go Patterson? I'm left alone. Again, so anyway, so Bruce lies up Bruce lie. You know, I'm I'm just watching as all I'm doing, I'm just watching Bruce lights up all of. Two nights in a row embassy, suite hotel everybody that weight rooms so we go down the lobby the night before everybody in hotel, evacuated damn room. So we go down lobby. Fritz running. This was three hundred. Plus, this does he rode nineteen seventy four Bruce furniture. The birth. Mark was this big at that? So anyway, runs out all of a sudden I look out my hotel when did. And I see fire trucks, Seattle, seatac far department is coming to my door. All of a sudden, I see the elevator doors open.
