They just keep going well. When we launched you the media in bristol. we filled pob. And how did that happen because initially when the event was first announced we had to six people book on and we found ourselves having to cancel the event another reason is that as we delivered the first hybrid event in july. Normal poop look sausage shaped or. It's very easy to pause very soft this charge and be complaining about bellyache. Tummy ache or be withholding or appear to be a lot of pain and discomfort when they are passing pu the main difference between the bristol stooge chart and the kid friendly poop. Chart is that in the bristol's card. Everything is label so normal. Stools are probably labeled as type five whereas in the kids chart. You just won't make any sensed if you ask your child well see look. Light doesn't look like type one or type seven on this chart so instead he can talk to them about it. Look like a sausage or if you hold up a pictorial chart and if you had no idea what i'm talking about do click on the accompanying blog post which populated the show notes. So if the stews look a little bit like sausage but corn on the cob so it has a little bit like of cracks. You can say to chart doesn't look not corn on the cob and that's still normal it. "Topic like this. You know it's not an easy topic and difficult for very many people there. All every opposing view convention different ends of the spectrum and we appreciate that and understand that another idea with the display which may be slightly naive. But the idea. Is that when you come into you saw with your particular viewpoint. You see the background to what happened. You then see the statue itself and as you go out you see and hopefully pick up on this view that we should now unite together as a society to agree how best to address these issues. It's not about the rising people's views. How can we come to consensus culprit. So what's the what's the plan in the medium to long-term of the a how long long will be on display here and then what happens. I'd say car loan career. Here's first ever time. We put something on display as a temporary funny. I never actually said we're going to down and that's very much on purpose that we just want to judge how it's received to see how much consultation response we get and then we'll make a decision in collaboration again with the history commission as to win it would be appropriate stake you down and to end consultation. That at the moment it's all open ended so temporarily could be very long long-term. I've classrooms at school. My thanks so much for joining us from just about what you've made the of course. I think it's monumental isn't it is finally being recovered and popped into. I think where he should have been hurt decades ago. And what's the mood in bristle not one year on because obviously not. Everyone grieves even if you thought status of being there you disagree with the way it was taken down. How is the mood in bristol now. But i think it's it's changed for the better but then obviously we've also been hit by pandemic in addition to everything else. It just happened has been a slight tension at times. Been seen with other riots especially around the police So i think something else will bubble up happen in the nazi distinct feature. But that's what we'll take that. We were having a holiday in runaway about stopping for bristol. Just for this now we've been before to restore. We just wanted to stop for today but we definitely wanted to check this out that we here for you. What do you make it's great. I think it's a way of kind re interpreting interior now history which we should do like lots of statues are up. Just never get question. This is one of the places where hard i think. It's a good thing. Yeah what about you definitely in the context of all of that with all the placards and what happened last year. It's it's really good to say. Thank you should definitely stay bonnie yvonne. You feel like anything's changed the conversations better or was it a thing which happened some. We've gone nuts how we were before. I think it's definitely spoke some conversation. And it's definitely brought things into perspective. A lot of people things that were maybe in the background earlier but events last year really get instigated certain conversations in new year's disagreeing. Look at the compensation. Starting this is the beginning and it's going to take a long road ahead of us but yeah it's definitely better than it was before last summer so having just been to see the statue walking back through the shed the museum in bristol and james you've stopped just because you've spotted another bristol. Protest so this is theresa garner bristol suffrage yet and in one thousand nine nine winston churchill. Who was a prominent opponent of suffrage movement with a dog and dogwood temple station shouting. Vokes woman wow this whole dismiss has have you ever taken direct action for political calls and it's all about bristol's history of doing exactly that a down the is definitely and it's definitely a part of bristol's sort of self identity and it's becoming more prominent in how people talk about and think about bristol. It's interesting rather than just being a series of unconnected events a sort of sense of self awareness of his history and that feeds into a narrative and sort of self identification of we are radical city. Who thinks differently to the rest of britain. How true is she put against the radical traditions of say manchester nottingham. London in particular is opposite debatable. But there is definitely especially in recent the last decade or so that sort of narrative that's being put about by brazilians and about brazilians. I suppose also it feels it feels like a live thing in bristol still in a way that maybe it's so in some of those other places you mentioned. Yeah definitely an especially.

"Was triggered about love matters protest a year ago Other saying racism is a pandemic to A little bit of detail of what exactly happened. Exactly a year ago analogy to match the left as a sort of which clocks projection video wall of some coverage and then there is the much discussed statue of edward colston. Lying down not standing up lying dance still with some of the blight red some blue graffiti on that as well. I'm gonna be behind glass barriers jokin touchdowns some signs of the damage from being walls through the middle of the city centre. But the way it's laid out almost reminds you almost solve a tune if like lying down and as you're looking down on it they haven't been a statue which for so long looked down on the people of bristol. Why is it. Lie down that span. And how long will it be able to catch up with way. Walsum who is the head of collections and archives at bristol city council late first of all wise the statue lying down in that in this way lying on his back because actually in the end ultimately discussion. We decided we should be open and honest and say that this is how we've been caring for it while it's been install the whole point about this display is to people wash it happen next so let's just put it out as it is raining. And what sort of state is it. Because i was struck walking to bristol earlier just how far they traveled. A my mind seemed much closer to the water. Well you can't see little classes missing. Two parts is missing. It's kane and also part of the fort coat but as also damage you can clearly see from the rolling event took place on it but science that is in pretty reasonable condition. We've stabilized it. Conserved it with our team. And it's it's it's still pretty good and there's a survey once you've been you've read about the history you've seen the statue. There's a survey asking people to take to give their views on it. O struck a few minutes just going through myself friends and having live sort of heated discussions about what he thinks up and in many ways. That's what museums should be about. You know they're not places. A hushed towns i should be placed as stimulate did by discussion and a particular topic like this. You know it's not an easy topic and difficult for very many people there. All every opposing view convention different ends of the spectrum and we appreciate.

"Surely on times radio on a walking tour of bristol with james watts. An associate teach from the department of history. The university of pistol talk me through some of the protest socks of crystal beheading next to would that the former site of the colston statue of course devoted to the scene of almost exactly a year ago This was where a year ago like. Now this is where a stop to Edward causton yes. Sydney looking down from above and it was erected in eighteen ninety five six hundred and seventy years after died By victorian idea of michael civic sedan cvt he was really praised for its philanthropy And that the idea was to reinforce idea. There's a lot of anxiety in bristol time about strikes big series of strikes and a few years earlier and sort of rising organization of socialist trade unions sosa education so the idea was which wasn't very widely supported by geico changed our smith proposed a statute to bristol's Favorite as he But no i mean it was. His favorite son bristol without necessarily being bristol. safer sub. This is not actually someone who everyone in bristol loved even at the time. No certainly not even said of in the early eighteenth century when when he died he was very much known as being a high tory he was sort of he did do. Cordola paper was philanthropy. I directed towards certain it was linked to homes for sailors sit of schools perhaps very much of education towards what he wanted and so says that you can just make big face on the phone again event bristol as one of the most virtuous unwise sons the city and so how significant is it than it was this time last year the statute it wasn't a huge had..

So what's the deal with. East bristol becoming a permanent feature. Yeah very very popular. I think I was up. At the the the factory they were keep all the the bristol scooters we started off with About hundred up around. Two thousand johnson everywhere. It must've math very very popular to use them. Yeah whenever take is this is. This is exactly what it should be doing. I was. I had an appointment. I live in eastern appointments up. In clifton i needed to get that had about half an hour Because i was a bit late. And i could have taken the car but flush so scooter. Skewed up to Fifteen perfect i'd it was a really nice way to travel to that was moving. Reese speaking to me on the podcast. Now to try and question of why dakota's keep having bristol. I've been on the history tour of the city. Turns how the history of abetting stretches back all the way to the seventeen hundreds. This is what i found out james. "The statue came down interviewed. Marvin waste the mayor bristol here on the rebels polka so as well as back in the city i thought i'd catch up with even see what he makes of the events of the past months. What was a statement about that kind of was the history folding back on itself. The statue of someone who made a wealth in knowledge from the kidnapping enslavement. That would evoke would have involved. The torture of they've africa's twenty percent of the people That's came under. His charge. Apparently died on route would have been thrown overboard to have that starchy roll through the streets thrown into the hall the very harbor the ships would adults just outside. This building is history leaning back on itself. And that's what. I meant By that and that. That was something. I couldn't you know we'd seen but as i said also said as a man you know what kind of canoeing no damage than it was damaged by the by definitions So you know. I hold those things together. And that's the thing is some people have very strong views on it but it is possible to both not like the statue. Not be heartbroken. There was taken down the also not condone criminal damage at the same time. Well i think yeah one of my challenges as a as a mayor of the city is to make sure that this is a city in which You get what you want if you if you activity get what you didn't want this is still you'll city now. We've got people who looked on that statue. The holding dan the way it happened and take julian every aspects of that. Is it a message. The establishment is turn over the order. There was some people who are sympathetic to the statue coming down but this made it the way it happened. They losing control say there was. Some people who feel costa was an integral part of bristol's identity is an affiliated lost a piece of themselves and they've lost a piece of the city's identity and this is their their sit in on challenging. The coming months is to you know look colston but to look at the broader histories of colston many ways departure point. But it's not the destination for the brewers story personal so we have a full owner of who we are and this is a city that wherever you are on your interaction with the events that happened you notice. You'll see it respectfully. Obviously the statue was fished out of the harbor. It's been in storage and now on despite the just across the water if you being done in seen it in the exhibition yeah well before. The exhibition opened up and oversee. I've seen drawings as the display exhibitions being planned. It's really the thing that really stopped is partly. There's some stuff about the history of colston's own history but the time line of basically unhappiness about the statue dated almost watch the point that it was puts up notably one hundred seventy years after colston wasn't a thing of its time but this was a new thing although for lots of people don't know bristol. This may have not something that the the last year but actually this wasn't a new control though. I'm many controversies. That aren't there. As soon as certain groups get involved with the power of social media would not have a voice and suddenly people say new debate in time it was a hold on. We've been up in his to pay for a long time since you didn't you didn't nobody So yeah so. We've been controversial controversial. At the beginning there was political competition wasn't advertising burke and you know the the the the people that you know held up bokan and Also thinking about what statement. At the time. I think in many ways. Statues meaning has changed. I mean originally. Some historians say that the coastal statue was puts up in an effort to build civic pride because the working costs the white working cost. Were not happy that the conditions were conditions that living conditions on by creating this kind of founding. Father mythology you. You built that loyalty. And so you know there's a in many ways of manipulation an oppression that wasn't about justifying slavery. It wasn't debate when it was put up. But it's become synonymous with stills relationship was. Slaving statues means changed over time. And it's just changed again because it's been pulled down. So this is paul in many ways of the ongoing developing story of that statue in the city. And how's the has bristol. Have the debate in the conversation. When we spoke here we go. You hoped that was coming out of this. Actually people have been learning. Maybe a bit. More about bristol's relation with slavery. Is that that debate. Been happening in the way that you hope. No i mean you know. I was resident to jump at the time. The statues massively significant. I've been talking to african americans as well and you know you know by this in new york in new orleans and studies of huge significance because they convey meaning but studies in themselves and the change of statutes do not bring about systemic change So it was always said. I didn't get the memo on my desk the next day. The scooter exclusions about boys is now at the same level as you know not for what will mental health inequalities of change the. We've solved the housing crisis. None of that stuff much. I mean i will shed her. I i i think that There's also a danger that people get caught up in symbolism and they were structural realities. But that's what i was gonna say you know people can say oh. Great statues down. All of bristol's waste problems now being solved. Yeah well someone's we meet every day and said marvin. I think they were established activists credit for being mad so he said marvin Kind of you know. We pulled the statue down because you didn't take action and debate ended last year. Said i'll show you it. Didn't racism wasn't so. And i'll just share whatever thing which is a very personal refreshment for me my like all that kind of so say heightened awareness about issues of race and klaus The that holding down the statue was supposed to report a by. I just ran for man. I was the only one of the four main candidates. It wasn't educated at private school and as anyone wasn't why not to win. The election campaign did not come up. I'm not saying they should. If we are in this heightened state of you know political. you know antenna. I and an insight. Then i was. I was actually quite surprised that those issues were were kind of think. Come up and that's one more thing. There are lots of contradictions here. Yes there was a lot more conversation but the question is how deep and how sight for that conversation and what what will happen. Because i know that the The is now on display temporarily. Although with no end date is it likely they will just stay in the museum there or do you think will end up somewhere else will keep it here for for a good while because because we have covid the limited numbers of people going through so we want as many people as possible chance to go through and see onto participate by the way in the survey that goes with it which is about creating space for the city and people from outside the city can contribute Contribute their audience to what they think should happen with the starchy. So be the For a while. But i think other people will at some point in the future i want to see in. We need to be open to to to share it and you talked about you'll conversations with people around the world. Who did you find yourself. Suddenly in the center or international spotlight and slum last year. Who have you been speaking to around the world about all. These was a my time. So i went on on the day Trying to four in the evening. But at some i came in the next day. I just had a whole writes a like a lineup of not just press leave. Join join all day L. comes team on the back of an envelope. Calculation thing probably about corporate billion people. Yeah i mean. Most of them were the red box. That's right. yeah. I heard you use this on the sort of the question of why bristowe we talked about this last year then sentenced to kill the bill protests. Nowhere else in the uk. They exploded the same way. And i've been looking here by eleven o'clock but the history of protest in bristol. What is it about bristol. that means. that's the wrist is long enough sometimes successful sometimes not sometimes as tragic ends to. What is it about whistle. That means it does have this history of protest. I would really be reluctant to say what the thing is..
Why We Hold On To Things
"When you move to a new home or a new city. You take your things with you as you carry box after box out of your house. You might have an epiphany you own. A lot of stuff hood is the author of possessed. Why we want more than we need. He's a psychologist at the university of bristol. He explores the psychology of ownership. He knows the answer to the question. You may have asked yourself during your last move. Why do i own so much stuff. Bruce hood one-two hidden brain. Thanks for having me shankar. You mentioned bruce that there are about fifty thousand storage facilities in the united states. There are even more storage facilities than starbucks cafes or mcdonald's restaurants what does this reveal about. How much tough. We have bruce. It's amazing isn't it. It's a really strange phenomenon. it's fairly recent. i would imagine as a consequence of the fact. Productions of increased as manufacturing has really developed over the last couple of centuries. But we seem to be increasingly on this relentless pursuit of more and more things. And that's really what drove me to start writing a book about. What's the motivation. Oh yeah what's interesting is that we don't just own staff but we often find ourselves bewildered that we own so much stuff almost as if we didn't have agency acquiring all the stuff ourselves so we look around us and we see how could i possibly have collected all the stuff around me. Yeah well that's kind of the reasoning behind the title of the book possessed and it's a play on words because you know say possessions are the things that we own but i'm also alluding to the fact that this is almost as if there's a sort of little demon inside his which is compelling us to go for more things like this irrational little monster who who controls our consumption.

Clinical trials underway to test jab efficacy for children in the UK
"Some queued for hours outside wall substitute library for walk. In short of the coluna virus vaccine. Three thousand jobs were given here during the day earlier. This week it was announced that fifty seven percent of all adults in the uk been given at least one shot but now could the nation's children also joining the lines. Trials are apparently on the way. Our deputy political editor. Nicholas cecil has stored nicholas. How young are we talking about here. Well at the moment scientists and health experts in bristol. The building children's vaccine said they have a study underway involving children who are teenagers. And this is a study using the astra zeneca jab. They're expecting shortly to be given the go ahead to start recruiting younger children as young as five and the reason why they're doing these trials is that so far all. The clinical trials have been adults to check that the vaccine was safe and worked in adults. And now they're checking out with it. It'd be equally safe and effective for for for children for people under eighteen benegas. Do we need to give children a virus facts. Because i thought you know the whole point of them. Going back to school was because young people don't get the serious effects of covid nineteen if the contract. This is a very interesting ethical question children as you say if they do get grown virus they are very unlikely to get the disease severely. But there's a big issue here of nuts about the circulation of the virus so this study will look at whether the vaccine works in children and then the the experts expect decision by the government in the summer about whether to start vaccinating children and professor. Adam finn who's from bristol university one of the leading experts on this. He was explaining that to vaccinate children just for the benefit of other people that that could be questionable and he would feel uncomfortable about that but he explained that actually if vaccinating children meant that the disease was kept under control and that meant that schools could reopen safely in september then there would be a benefit to children and therefore actually giving the jabs to children we would be beneficial only to them but also society

This season after his win on the bristol dirt on monday your exciting race A lot of different things happening throughout it But you know. I think that the biggest thing was just being methodical throughout the race You know for for us. We had a good Shell pennzoil mustang one. That was probably the best at on the long run Last fifteen twenty laps of is where we really shining Yes i was just trying to make sure i had some tires on it for that moment and the thought in my mind at least was get two cars per per run If i can get a couple of a couple more get a couple more You know. I'll be in position to win this race and You know was able to pounce at the right times and get my sore is which is a lot of fundraising him We're friends so it was pretty cool to see and then You know being able to to maintain the lead and race. Any there at the end was nuts and they watered down the race trag ascertains. It's dirt racing man. You just don't know what you're going to have next and you're you're forced to figure something out quickly so tj spotted a good job at. Tell me where danny was. And i tried moving up but you know it takes such a different driving style to make that work. It's joey's twenty-seventh career cup series win if you can believe it. "John. Hundred checks crash. Seen clips the ford truck and the ford truck goes skidding into the inside wall and crashes even more. That's a big honking bummer. For the yeah. That's insult to injury. Terrible yeah. I don't get it. So john hunter dima check is indeed the point that i guess. Yeah he is. And that's even after the crash. So why not that. He was bowing in front of kraft heinz haller afterwards and all kinds of stuff. Yeah yeah he was. He was none too pleased. And you're stuck and the enfield right you league down to that things over. So, Kevin Harvick, at this check to wins twelve, top five top tens and a pole average finish a fourteen point eight seven, one, Denny Hamlin is your number two driver to wins nine top fives fourteen top tens for polls average finish of fourteen point four. That's the second time you've stroked out during this show you okay. Yeah. I'm finding I'm watching the dodgers came at the same time. So okay. multiple things. Multiple balls in the air I'm juggling and. You're you're on it. because. It's actually a sport that's exciting. So as opposed to to the action, track. You're still on that I'm ridiculously on that. Brag has asked he won this race. Track in May. Three win six, five, seven, top tens and average finish of sixteen point five to four dodgers win this game that I'm watching by the way at the time of this recording. So pretty happy. Okay What did you just do? Joey. Brad. it was just the third out. So that's why I was happy. Okay. Now, Joey To win six, top five, ten top tens of average finish of fifteen point three you better rough somebody up joey because we need some action. Seriously how about Martin Church junior this is a guy who's kind of gotten into a joe in the past. He has to top no wins to top five. What does that I thought he was a short-track ace. Apparently not he has to top three top tens and average fans knew this does not look good. Twenty point six he is doomed. Wow. Just L. do mode. Somehow Austin Dillon is here in the top six at number six at at Bristol Motor speedway he's got one top five, three, top ten's average finish of seventeen point, three, eight five, and that's eighteenth best. while. Yeah Speaking of Art Insurance Junior he finished second this past weekend and has become a short track threats in recent years not an ace because we just did stats on that. But here he is talking about short-track goodness deal where we got to work on certain things and trying to get Ricardo be certain things that I liked to do, and obviously it's A. Kind of began and be not to go to Jager with you know, basically, the same race cars in a lot of the same people just continue really to work in the same directions in the same areas. So you know I think short tracks places that are very unique and things that have worked in the past typically, you can carry through and and use them for season. So just the things that. We've been working on for me a particularly I. Guess, I'm not only the way I drive my style, but you know making the car compliment that and obviously great team and great race car. So it's really just a matter of putting all the pieces together and continuing to to refine on over the years and Mt. Jay is going to give us his thoughts on his recent chase Elliott run in at Darlington. Obviously. Really close. You know it was probably it was pretty much going to be you know the past weighing in my is you know I feel like in that moment, we both made a a split-second decision and tried to kind of anticipation or or what the other would do and and I think we both guess wrong to be honest with you. So Yeah. Just you know really close obviously nobody's fault. I don't think you can really been the. Blame on one guy just gone deals unfortunate for both our teams. This season has had its ups and downs is as crew chief to blame. Yeah you know I mean I wouldn't put that on James. It's just been one of the seasons. I. Feel like you know for us you know we went through some struggles here and there a little bit early on You know we came back from Cova de the break area was. Things were so different to you know a little bit of getting used to, and you know we were doing a little bit of experimenting and and it wasn't going really well for us we were bidding consistent. But you know we kinda got back to our our normal staff and. You know the last I guess eleven races whatever been you know feel like we've. been top two or three car had a shot at winning a few just like last week and they just haven't worked out. So we've had had a bit of bad luck this season for sure but. I. Feel like James has done a great job. He's done everything I. could ever ask him for and. I feel like he's you know Donna a job and I don't know that there's anything he's really missed. So from that standpoint I feel like. It's been good. I think we're definitely still getting stronger and have yet to show a real potential some pretty excited about that. Give them a chance to throw somewhere on the bus. That's awesome. Hey Martin you know you've been great. So your crew chief. GotTa be gotta be. March junior gives his thoughts on the Auto Club speedway in California your homeland, Kerry convenient impressed and short-track the action track part two I'm against it already I actually just heard. Yesterday I guess Ritchie's let me know I hadn't seen anything about it. So I don't know may not I'm kind of? A little bit sad. I guess you know I I really I really enjoy California speedway Great Race Track you know I, feel like the older it's gotten the the more fun it was to drive into race on. So little bit. Disappointed from that standpoint but you know anytime detractors excitement and it'll be cool. See what they come up with the I don't know any.

Oh, she go that it makes it the hardest race that we run into most unique race. We run I think probably the biggest thing for me was folly subtle in that. You know it's super fast race track and and things happened so quick. And that pretty well was the first thing that really subtle in was. Gosh I mean I can't believe how rapid everything is happening. You don't have time to think I mean you better be up in the wheel we call it all the time because things are going to happen super fast. You'd better react super fast for me sitting in the car and as the last one on one thing that was giving me a provocation neck, my neck, which just fallen out there was so many G. forces I'd get four hundred laps into a five, hundred lapper and all of a sudden man my neck was just killing me and so I went and bought a special nick exercise machine. Every time I get rid of Bristol a month out I would start exercise my neck, just give it to strength a needed hold on because there's a couple of times where I had to finish the race with my right hand, hold my head up I was so tired and I won some racist like that at Bristol hold my head up with my right hand I go into turn one and hold my head up and as I come off at turn to I, put my hand down a back on the steering wheel. It was tough man it was the Bristol Beach Body up big time driving around the track is is a driver going there I used to always say that. The, first sort of fifty laps on the track every time you go. It takes a while for your brain to catch up with what's happening. It's kind of like an old VCR. Tape and putting it on fast forward That's Kinda the way it feels when all that's coming at you going around the race track for the first half of last. But eventually, it kind of all slows down and it starts to make sense and you start to sort of feel like you can keep up with what you're seeing. But I'm telling you it's such a fast racetrack happening. So quickly that. When you go there for the first couple laps, you're in over your head what makes bristles so special will wrap up with the perspective of Dale Junior and e w I feel like that the atmosphere Bristol is a selling point how it sort of. scoped it out of this out of this mountain. I can't take you to anywhere else in the schedule to any other race track and give you what Bristol's going to give you. Well. First of all, it's the last great coliseum and you know why? Because there's no place like it. There is no other race track. There's no other half mile concrete racetrack SH- around about one hundred and sixty, five, thousand seat. You're looking down on the action all the time so. It earned reputation because. It earned it in earnest reputation. It is the last great coliseum it is it is man and machine. It is the gladiators fighting each other. It's it. It did I think that last great coliseum just says it all about what that place is and what it's all about? It's the last. Great.
