"New business hours continue Harley Davidson is indoor a rough second quarter let's talk about the prospects for the Milwaukee headquartered motorcycle maker Garrett Nelson is joining us automotive analyst at C. F. R. A. research based in Rockville Maryland Garrod I guess sales slide continues at Harley Davidson that's right it wasn't a very good quarter for them earnings were down about four percent for the quarter all but more importantly they lowered their motorcycle sales guidance for the full year on the now expecting to sell about two hundred fifteen thousand motorcycles down from about two hundred twenty thousand before and they also lowered their margin guidance for this motorcycle so not a not a great release for Harley Davidson is it possible to tell an awful the date is in or not is it that people are buying fewer motorcycles in general or is this a Harley issue no no right people are buying fewer motorcycles for Harley Davidson not this is a problem that goes back several years their annual motorcycle sales actually peaked way back in two thousand six at about three hundred fifty thousand so their annual sales have fallen berries steadily now for thirteen years in their down about forty percent from the peak it's it's a it's a problem long term secular problem we think and what they're trying to do is diversified growing too fast growing faster growing Asian markets such as India and China but the problem with that is we think the motorcycle sales are much lower margin over in those markets so they certainly have their fair share of challenges looking for easier way for Harley to evolve here it I mean it we we talked earlier about how coca Cola and how they involved in are doing well we talked about how Sears did not evolve and did not do well can hardly do anything I mean it's pretty much motorcycles right they're they're trying mean they're looking at electric bikes there there is spending money on research and development of all kinds of different products but the bread and butter of this call here really the old the old motorcycles that that really appeal to the older generation of riders in that generation just is not they just don't have the same kind of demand from the younger generation of millennials are just not that interested in buying Harley Davidson in about sixty percent of their sales or to the US market so you know that's a problem for them do you have a recommendation on the stock I'm looking at it right now to thirty six box it's ironically it's up about five and a half percent today we did we so we have a sell recommendation on the stock with the thirty dollar target thanks so much Garrett Nelson automotive analyst at C. "Real genius. I mean, just an amazing costume designer. And also a real character, you know, Houston. Like sort of sachet around the halls with his jacket over his shoulder. And he like literally stopping. Wearing our pearls today. And then move I like, what are you talking about? But he was amazing. And he he's my last year at at northwestern came up to me and one of my. I guess college mates and said, look if you guys really want to be costume designers have one year to teach you for years worth of knowledge. So let's do it. So we did it and he took us under his wing and really worked as hard. And then I took a year. I was an intern down at the Dallas theater center. And then I went to graduate school at Rutgers together to run Swick. Near where did you grow up just outside of Princeton? Very nice. I'm a big fan of the good wife, and one of the things I love tremendously vatted is being that. It's a New York show it draws heavily from the incredible wealth of New York theater actors. So while we're on the topic of theater. I actually like I went through IMDB just scrolled until my phone went dead all of the day players that you have costume for that show. And so many of them. I'm only good mentioned a few. But so many of them are like giants from theater, I'm going to throw a few names, obviously, Stockard Channing Christine Bransky, huge while Sean Jane Alexander, Linda Lavin, Alan coming. Of course, a regular Joanna. Gleason Boyd Gaines, John Glover. Kristen channel with Bob Balabagn, Geoffrey demont f Harvey Firestone. Jerry, Stiller Tova fell CIA Charles s Dutton. Audra McDonald Priscilla Lopez. Donna murphy. Jane curtain, Judd Hirsch. And that is really and that is really not even a comprehensive list, and you're making me nervous that list. How doing it's just all you know, that that you can tune in and see those people if you can't if you don't have a chance to go to the heater there. They are doing a great little stint. And so my question is having access to those incredible people who bring years decades of riches to you. How have they made you stronger? What would have you read? What's been your takeaway, like working with some of these giants? I think right off the bat. I have to be on my game. I have to be on point. And I have to be professional and prepared and ready for them. I have to be flexible enough to use their knowledge and to use their experience and to grow from what they bring and at the same time. I have an aesthetic on the show that I need to maintain. So it's sort of marrying those two worlds that becomes one of my bigger challenges after the first year or two of the good wife one thing that that was on the air. When thing that happened. That was great was actor started coming in saying we love that. You're costuming us because we love the clothes. So we feel like we're in safe hands. Just do what you do. So I love that. That's really wonderful. You know, it's hard. Sometimes when we get a character like we had Christina Ricci on the show, and she was whole lovely. She was so great. But she literally was cast five seconds before she came in. She didn't know sort of the character yet she was trying to work it out. And we literally standing in my fitting room, I saw her take on the character because of the clothing that we were putting on her, and we literally put things on she go. I don't I don't and she was always so kind of like, okay was that away? And then we would put out other stuff, and eventually she and I came together to find this character. And she was able to go to set and feel confident and feel good about what she was wearing and feel like what we were doing with supporting what she wanted to do in the scenes question. But I have a quick aside real quick. 'cause I saw something you mentioned Jane, Kirkman to something. Across my social media the day that she said that I thought was just absolute, of course, spot on an hysterical. She said I used to be the only dumb blonde on television reading fake news. Now, there's a whole network. I tell you and the other thing that's sort of hard because you mentioned in curtain. I mean, literally, my my my assistant, my look, and it'd be like we have a legend latching. You know, when you just you have to pinch yourself, and you're like, but then they're real people who wanted to the job they act insecure and read along with all of their chops. They're also shaky in your thirty thirty go on his show, a guest on his show this when you have to get up and perform in front of people, you should picture them in their underwear. So you as a costume designer have that advantage picture them? Actually, I actually wear just my underwear or you make them feel come. Your shirt giver? Question was so somebody like Giuliani girls or Christine Barandy or any number of these really strong talented powerful people who are also just physically strong and powerful they can very easily overpowered a piece of clothing or an outfit or a look how do you? What how do you offset that is it color or you look for a lot of sharp cuts? You know that it's a really good question. And one thing I want to say right off the bat is to answer that when I first started on the good wife. I I looked at Julianne his work, particularly from ER, of course. And she such a subtle understated. Actress that if you just look at her eyes look look at her face lit just look at those pieces. She's she's not going to choose the scenery. And I and I knew immediately I could not put her in things that would take the Iowa from her away from her face. I couldn't put her in things that would overpower her or take over the scene unless we wanted it to there have been a couple of times where that's happened during the season. But you always have to be careful to to work with the actor to to again come up with something that they feel comfortable with this win. They're not comfortable when. What they're wearing that. They start to you start to see them act. Do you know? Oh, yeah. No. Absolutely. And I even had I remember Christine Branca was I think it was more nervous about fitting her the first time that I was about Juliana because Christine was known for close. I mean, you know, she had been on that show civil and had been won awards for it. And she was known for clothing. So I was a nervous wreck. And I remember I literally had a table that was like maybe fifteen feet long covered in jewelry. I was like ready to do this and she came in. And she looked at the Jordan. She said, darling. That's fabulous. But I really need to look like a lawyer. And it was like, of course, you do you know, and she was so important for her to to come across his lawyer instill be sort of belly glamorous. Now, the good wife is about her was about three very strong women. Julie Anamar Healy's Alicia Christine branchy who plays Diane. And then we had Archie job who played. Kalinda on the show, and she just finished her contract last year, and she left us, but off three of those women were very very strong, personalities and. One of the things that I wanted to do I did not design the pilot. I did the done every episode since then and the pilot look great. It was terrific. But it felt like all three
