"You know, a cz faras like that. Who's the first person? You actually spoke to bread? Uh, guy named rant. Mullinix played for the Blue Jays for many years. He actually I live out in open California, Central Valley in vice daily about three hours away, and he actually was a good guy to start out with because he was so accommodating and down to Earth. He I went and met up with him at his baseball academy and got to actually get a fitting lesson from him. And I mean, that was one of the fun things about the books that really made it very participatory. I mean, I'm Active character in the book, and it's very much a narrative creative nonfiction type of book. So I do a lot of different things with these guys like that hitting lesson I went to to do with one guy I know. And our museum with one guy. We lifted weights plate when watch come from bowling. I mean, I did all these different activities, which I think makes the book a lot more entertaining. Did you? Were you nervous for that? 1st 1 Did you warm up a cz? You went on and met all these other players or we had nervous for each one because we're just different. Yeah. I mean, there's always going to be that that you know that those nerves and I mean, I think I got a little more comfortable. I won't be one guy saying Jaime Cocaine hour. He went so far as to invite me to his house for the Fourth of July barbecue so It was. It was pretty cool the way that that a lot of guys welcome the end of and and again the most surprising thing in a good way, Wass how opened these guys were about really personal stuff. And you know, the book really is not about baseball as much as bigger themes that we can all relate Teo and one of them being Vulnerability and how I was really blown away by how how vulnerable these guys were willing to be in talking about abusive fathers and alcoholism and drug addiction and divorces. And I mean all these things that Really showed you that they're not that different from all the rest of us. I mean, they're dealing with the same things that we do. It absolutely will dig into that a little bit. We're talking to Brad bluejeans. His new book is called the Wax Pack on the open road of baseball's afterlife. Tips every Django developer should know
"This first tip that have this is like one of the main things that I think of is like it comes with these building block pieces that say Flask Impure Pyramid and. Bass APN. What just don't come with like Admin back ends Yup. That's where we're going to start off. So Django clearly comes at batteries included and some people actually don't like that because they've under rule their own and they think itself. I happen to like their preferences and yeah, one of those well-known building blocks as the admin interface at and it's it's pretty impressive. But a few lines of code you. You can just add your model, an avid pie file, and you have to complete crowd interface, which is probably pretty end user. But as a maintain earth, this site it's it's pretty convenient and it's also very easy to extend it. So for example, taking admin class here, you can define some search fields. which makes those field searchable. You can have even have out a complete fields which they integrated the jobless Ritz. You can override to get crazy set and. Yeah. It's a nice way of inheriting from the Admin Dots Model Admin blasts Yeah. So it comes out of the box just. Kind of think of it as like. Google sheets or something for your database, right? Right. Where each table is like a tab or a sheet and sit in the workbook or whatever the terminology of Google sheets is. But the task. The bottom writes something I mean not necessarily stimuli. But that idea that you have like a grid over top of it. But what you're telling me is I can go into rive special classes that are tied to the various. Tables the models more specifically in it lets you search different aspects of it. Lets you cool. Auto completion. You could also say like limit how many items come back in your search results per page. So you don't get a million or something like that, right? Yeah. Do a list filter, for example, and then certain columns at the right side of the page. You can filter on them by clicking. Just. With one nine of coach. So this does raise some Cole functionality and I think, maybe in the show notes, we can link to a Django adleman cookbook, I use a loss which has like the hands. On. I. Might have mentioned before actually on pie down the vice then the umbrella from that book. That's like fifty pages and. Yeah Very. Workable. Super Bowl. Another thing you can do is you can write a function called get query set and actually do things like be joyner, do a joined queries against other things. Otherwise you may it up with like the N plus one problem of Orum's were doing queer than everything that comes back. You have to do more queries per item to try to fill out the details, I will talk about that in in one of the tips. Yeah. Yeah. Awesome. That's super cool. Let's see what else you want to say about that I. You know I was it. You think it might have been you either you or damn baiter. baiter from real python talking about using this to actually trigger events as you interact with this adman was that you think that was me. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So tell us that's like I. think that's pretty related. Tell people by the pretty. Cool. Right. We spoke about that on Python Bites Yeah. Thank God. We did was in one of the at model self variety safe method, and then the object plus created, and only then do a certain action. He likes emailing people in Hindsight. That's probably better to do it a salary task by it's an example how you can override those methods and do certain things. Yeah. Pretty easily. Yeah very cool. All right remember to or magic. Yeah. Well, Dan go comes with its own orem object relational napper and it's kind of a proxy today. So you don't have to ride s all yourself although i. Am such a fan. I'm saying, well, you worked at, Oracle, didn't you? Fan of orange actually or in the nurse sequel world maybe od M.'s or or some. are might not necessarily make sense, but you know there's so many issues you can run into if you don't use parameters, queries, little bobby tables, and all those issues and just like if you get the rock queries back and you pull different values sometimes you forget to convert this thing to an integer and it's just a string that has an energy in it that sort of. All these little weird edge cases right now you're as. With. Orum's at kind of. Like a layer that just separates like how your data should be transformed I. Really Love It. I, think it's great. I know one hundred percent work all the time. Right? There's places where it doesn't. But that's not as you know like most the time it's a it's a beautiful thing and it's it's a nice obstruction and it's way easier to use and more elegant.
Dwayne The Rock Johnson is Buying an Entire Football League
"For many of us, Monday nights sieve Longman, Monday, night football. So today's a good day to consider a shakeup in the football world. The potential revival of a would be competitor to the National Football League last week actor and former pro wrestler Dwayne the Rock Johnson with other investors bought a start-up Football League called the xfl this take some explanation especially to those who aren't avid sports fans. Let's start with the xfl contrary to popular belief. The NFL doesn't football is just had a monopoly for the most part for so long that most. Most people consider it an institution for the last couple of decades though rivals have attempted to build new leagues to compete with the. NFL. The XFL is one of those its roots began way back in the year two, thousand when World Wrestling Federation chairman. Vince. McMahon decided to build a league that could compete with the NFL NBC Cohen the League and planned to carry its games the XFL plan to extend the football season by playing games from just after the Super Bowl in February. Until late April. Now, at the time league owners, hopes were high that the Saturday night games could Wu and elusive audience TV. Teenage boys according to CNN. Vince McMahon. WWF had been almost magical in its ability to appeal to twelve to twenty four year. Old Males who typically don't stay home watching TV on Saturday nights. The xfl hoped McMahon could bring that WWF formula to football and win that desirable TV audience, and for one brief moment, it looked like their hopes were within reach the first game in two thousand, one drew more than fifteen million viewers a massive audience. That gold ring looked close and yet it turned out to be so far away as the season wore on audiences spell like a botched handoff after that single season, the xfl shutdown. Sometimes in life timing really is everything, and so it goes for Vince McMahon who decided that twenty twenty would be the right time to revive the xfl it launched in February, pitching the Seattle dragons against the DC defenders teams played five games among both players and owners. Optimism rained TV audiences varied by geography, but were decent enough that by March believe was well into planning the twenty twenty, one season. And then Kobe came along the League canceled the season March twentieth less than a month. Later, the XFL filed for bankruptcy sports writers added the xfl lists of other WanNa, NFL competitors who'd also tried to make a go of it over the years. The XFL seemed to be just another failed startup, but perhaps they declared the league's death too soon. Let's get back to Dwayne Johnson better known as the Rock Johnson actually started his career as a football player, but never made it to the NFL instead, he joined Vince McMahon's wwf where he quickly rose to superstardom before retiring to become an actor, he's now the highest paid actor in the world according to Forbes. With his business partner Danny Garcia who also happens to be his ex wife, the rock led the fifteen million dollar purchase of the. xfl. Out of Bankruptcy Sports Management Company redbird capital as a third partner. Johnson says the purchase was actually Garcia's idea she loves football and when the XFL declared bankruptcy, she saw their chance to own not just a team but an entire league not to get too grand about this. Consider that the salary of a single NFL football star say. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak. Prescott is thirty, one million dollars. That's more than double what the partners paid for the xfl which has eight teams. Still, the deal made headlines. Perhaps it's a bit of hopeful light entertainment amidst the onslaught of grim. News in two thousand, twenty, Garcia. Johnson. Say They plan to produce multimedia content for fans year round, not just during the active spring season at production time, they hadn't yet said when the League will start to play again.
Water Walking 101
"Water walk in one oh one. And might put in a seventh for extra credit if God blesses us with the time. But I noticed that a lot of times when we get in a situation like these disciples were in. Maybe like you're in right now with your job or maybe like you're in right now trying to figure out what to do with your family. Those kids your quiver is full right now. How many quiver is full and you quiver is. To be quite honest, your quiver is quivering. Though Bible humor quickly. and. When we find ourselves in these situations, there is a tendency to blame you know the disciples like the fight. And liked to argue with one another any chance they got. But yet the storm brought them together in a unique way in Matthew Chapter. Fourteen. Trial sometimes tighten our focus. And so one thing we don't see in this storm is Peter John Going back and forth there Andrew and Bartholomew talking about who's rowing the hardest? They just need to make it through the storm. But what really got my attention was a detailed that I must have skimmed over like I mentioned in today since we're in class I, want to study a little more deeply. Is that blame doesn't get you through a storm. And the detail I noticed in Verse Twenty to present on the screen for me. Again, it said that Jesus made the disciples get into the bowl. Jesus made the disciples get into the boat. You're not people say the devil made me do it. Jesus made the disciples get into the boat. He didn't ask them. He didn't recommend. He didn't suggest, and now would be one thing if he didn't know but he's the son of God with all wisdom. So. How did the one with all wisdom send them into something that threatened their life? I want you to write down point number one in the class and put it in the chat. Certain storms are unavoidable. Just need you to know that certain storms. You know what I mean by storm, right? It's not always physical. Sometimes, there can be an emotional storm. Sometimes there can be a psychological storm. Sometimes. There can be a relational storm. You know these storms we get into sometimes we are so busy trying to figure out how to get out of them. Then, we expend all the energy that we could have spent trying to learn what God wants us to learn through the storm. There's two ways to get through the storm and. As a survivor. And how many know is good. Just celebrate that you're still here. In case, you had a bad week I'm gonNA give you fifteen unscripted seconds. To praise God for the storms that you have survived. You can sit there. This been sunny in your neighborhood. But if you survive some depression. And if you thought were going down but. Give them praise. Survive the storm is a miracle to survive. Abuse is a miracle. To survive in economy that is falling apart but God provided is a miracle. But then God says you you can be a survivor. But then if you want to there are certain people that they decide I'm not just going to be a survivor I'm going to be a student of the store. And I I am learning to learn from the storm. I'm learning to learn from the storm. The thing about it is there are certain things that I can only learn in storms and. The second thing that I want to point out to you and the text is that God's timing. Is designed. To teach you to trust. When Jesus, who made the disciples get into the boat? The Bible says that when he decided to reveal himself to them. was just before dawn. If the goal that God has is the comfort us. Then this is a this is a late appearance. But if God's goal is sometimes to change us then it makes sense that he
Will Big Ten be next conference to cancel its fall college football season?
"To what Was reported earlier today by Pete Family. Another mid American conference today. They've already canceled their false sports schedule. They say they're going to try to play college football in the spring. According to Pete Family. Big 10 presidents are meeting today they are considering or that what is on the table. Is that they would cancel football for the fall, impossibly moved to spring. Gordon. What we see from the Big 10 commissioner. There are reports out that he Courtesy of the Detroit Free Press. The Big 10 commissioner prefer spring college football season. Now let me break this down in a couple of different ways won a lot of people going to talk about covert. We are obsessed with covert. We're talking about Cove. It rightfully so in a lot of ways, That's something that we should take seriously. I have to remain cynical. I have to remain Questioning these type of things, because I think there's something else at hand here. And I'm not getting a lot of pushback on it. And I know that they bring up the spring schedule and I I hope it's about covert. I hope it's about health. I hope it's about the safety of people involved. I really do hope it's about that. I do. But I'm just not convinced it's all about that. I think that Yeah, they do care someone about it. Yes, sure. Absolutely. More. I think about this, the more I think that there is a turd on that punch bowl, and that turd was laid in there or around this time last week when the Pac 12 had their players have a list of demands. Even to the Pac 12 presidents. I got a bad feeling that that's part of this. You know, the big 10. Some of those players followed suit. I just thought it was really interesting that today I see a report. Courtesy of ESPN is well, a stadium that Big 10 players from the Ohio State University have said, Hey, we're good. We love the guidelines. We are ready to play. It happens today as the president's air about Teo me of the Big 10. Something doesn't seem right. Something seems a little off. So it makes me wonder about that type of thing. If this is about and I do think there's a percentage of it what it is. I'm not sure there. There is a concern about people. There's a concern about health and safety. And it will. Certainly I'm sure we'll get the people in here so they can. They're 22 year old athletes. They're they're healthy horses. They'd be perfectly fun. I know, man. I know more than likely. Yeah, they'd be perfectly fine. And we've been talking about it for a while. It takes is one even if it were one. I don't know if that were to happen, Hell. My gosh, This is an ugly conversation have but we have to have it is that there are guys who die of heatstroke every year. In high school and college football, and it keeps going And I would wonder even if a person were to die from this in college football. It would maybe keep going. But when we're talking about a list of demands from players where they want compensation, where they want equitable treatment. Wonder if that's a little bit too much for the university presidents. They think, Okay, we'll wait. Maybe we'll wait till spring.
Rejuvenation and Propagation With Ken Druse
"I called you the other day and I'm like Oh, it's a mess everything. So overgrown and I'm telling you about my call is that's taken the. Anna's hip in the Salvia swamped by the whatever and you're laughing at me and so. What's the time for can? Besides facelifts. But just just because you aren't having guests visit doesn't mean you let the whole thing go to pot. Or you're thoughts go to pot. He's GonNa Discipline Me I publicly out loud on the radio. You said, you're pinching things so they get kind of thicker but. You May. It may be time to cut stuff back I. Guess I'm I'm using a modest sounding verb but yeah, you're right some cutbacks will you I have these big balls you've been here and you know people who visited if seen them through like big low terra cotta bowls on the patio and other places they're kind of you know and I group smaller pots around them but they're they're sort of the big statement centerpiece things for my annuals usually and and you know. Not. Everything grows at the same rate and put it all in when it's small, you know little things from the garden center but then something's grow more lushly than others and so like the Coleus, for instance. 'cause you know. Yeah. When you're cutting those Coleus bag you you mentioned that you could route them in water. You can also in some situations, just stick them back in the same container if you've got space and then that'll get even more lush and full without hanging over and losing its Bottomley's and stuff. Because, when you when you pinch or break off that parent plant branch and you'll get more leaves on that one, and then you have these pieces that you can either sticking or route in water or I like to use per light. Okay. So containers with like a pot of per light. SMALLPO- of per light and. Moist in the per light Tampa down really hard that really seems to help, and then I drill a hole in the per like with a pencil and sticking my cutting and firm the per light back around the cut and again, and you want to remove a couple of bottom leaves of the cutting the cuttings about. Four to six nodes long. So it's depending on the type of plant. Three to five inches long and some some plant. Coleus. Might route and two to four weeks. Then you have a new plant with roots and you carefully pry it out of the per light or in the case of water, you want to move it when the roots are less than an inch and a half long and sometimes roots made him water have a little trouble adjusting to a lower oxygen or higher oxygen medium. But anyway, you can stick them back in the same container that you took them from or just what you need Margaret. Another container of Coleus definitely need that. That's absolutely what I need. 'cause I'm doing such a good job managing the ones that I have this year. But seriously it has been kind of an epicure in the sense of We all are realities are changed Completely you know our patterns of life are changed. I mean, I'm stating the obvious and and on top of that in our region and many other regions, there's been severe weather so we have had. I've had almost no rain until a hurricane in fact, I should ask you how did you do during the hurricane that was just a couple of days ago I had a couple of inches of rain. Outages Day or two but not. Terrible terrible like many areas nearby had much. No, you were praying for rain. Also, a lot of areas they're still places New Jersey that don't have electricity. We lost power for almost twenty four hours. But we had five and a half inches of rain, and then that's stopped and then the wind came in the wind was really a lot of wind but. Knock would not trees and I've got tree did trees here. So I thought Oh that's GonNa be something there was there was one stick about four and a half feet long from the ash tree that was stuck into the lawn straight up. It's always funny when that happens in a big storm when it's also like spear gets thrown and it yeah, it really lands like right as if someone. INSERTED. It with with force while someone did. Yeah. Now, I had a couple of inches of rain and ninety. I keep saying to myself is this whole year? The theme weatherwise has been it never rains, but it pours it won't rain for a month practically and then we get the torrential gully washers. It's almost no rain. Yeah. Half. An hour of tons of you know you think finally and then it turns out it's dry under the trees sometimes. And you got to listen to half an inch but I was thinking about what we were talking about just before if you make a new plant and you potter it up of Coleus or a sweet potato vine or Begonia. You can carry. You can try to carry that over in a very sunny window inside and by March that's probably not going to be a very pretty plant, but you can cut that back and it'll make new growth and then make cuttings of the new growth and you can save a lot of money because you can use that to fill your those cuttings to fill your containers.
David Archer previews the Atlanta Falcons
"The Atlanta Falcons will do so with a former Falcons quarterback. Now he is their longtime color analysts on the radio network for Atlanta. And that is David Archer. David Hope all is. Well. Thanks for doing this. When we look at the Falcons, they made a big offseason acquisition getting Todd Gurley We don't know where the health is of Todd Gurley. What do you expect at a Todd Gurley coming over from l. A to Atlanta for this upcoming season? Well, be honest with you. I think we're expecting a lot of early and mainly in the Red zone. If you look at Todd Gurley's numbers, even with with so called quote unquote down near Around 900 yards rushing, still had 12 touchdowns. All 12 of those touchdowns came in the red Zone, and I think that Atlanta if they could find a way to run the football down close Help three up the talented weapons that Ryan has on the perimeter. Now, listen, you have a little bit more of a potent attack a little bit more looking a little bit more like what? You looked like a 16 when Avante Freeman and Tevin Coleman. We're carrying the ball down there close and created that problem in the run game. Atlanta has not had that over the last couple of seasons. I think that's where they expect Todd Gurley to make his main hey is down there in the red Zone. With the way that you probably have to manage his reps as a running back the rest of the running back room. Is there something that jumps out to you? Yeah, I think it's a good group. Really Do I think that when you look at Brian, Ill in the way, Brian Gillis Kamani together that Hawkins drafted a couple of years ago, Brian Handsome solid moments a year ago. Quadri Allyson. Kid at Pittsburgh rookie from a year ago. Uh, kind of woke himself. A little bit of a roll is a short yardage guy. £225 Goal line Guy, four touchdowns. Hopefully, you know, Smith can come back. He was injured in the game a year ago. I believe against the Rams in which he was trying to pick up a Blitzer, which he shouldn't be here should be doing, but he is an outstanding receiver out of the backfield. And a good change of pace back at the back, So they get to three young guys that I think you could lean on. And like you said, Take some of that. Load off. Assad, Girl. Let's get to the next down. And when we do so, we take a look at Matt Ryan and Julio Jones. The two big names in that organization. Do you still believe that this team could be a play off team once again with Matt Ryan and Julio Jones? I do, but it's you know, obviously, it's about you know your supporting cast and you do some things on the other side of the ball, and I'm sure there's a question you've got to worry about the defense's side the football, But there there's a little area in the offensive line. The left guard has been a little bit leaky, right guard's been a little bit leaky because of some injuries and things that they could shore up that into your part of the offensive line. Ryan's Like most classic quarterbacks climb in the pocket. They got to be able to give him that opportunity. Do so if you get into your pressure and accurate from problems, one game will help in that regard, but Yeah. Julio Jones, 16 seconds, 1300 yard seasons. Matt Ryan, nine consecutive 4000 yard seasons. I don't see the one those guys backing off. When you talk about that offensive line to follow up on that I'm a big fan of Matt Hennessy. Being a temple grad, really smart football player puts in a lot of work. Is he going to make an immediate impact in your number one? Yeah, There's always a question that he's certainly in the mix to be the starting guard. There's no question about that. I think that there's ah lot excitement around when he brings the table and and obviously the heir apparent, Alex Mack, probably its center. So Alex back in a little bit longer to still have a good football any But I need to put some guys around him that Khun taken, it could be in there and we had German Brown and James Carpenter guys that could not stay on the field. There was some solid moments from those two big veteran players, but they did not stay on the field and consistency. In the interior specialist that left guard spotted Kennedy ultimately will probably win that job and be the starter that guard let's get to the next down. All right, David Archer. When they flip the switch here and go to the other side of the ball defensively, it was an up and down year for the defense, but it seemed like they did finish in a better spot than what they did earlier on in the season. You could probably say that for the entire team with the Atlanta Falcons this division. Is loaded with offensive talent. You know what the Saints are. Now you have Tom Brady and the division with Tampa Bay, and I'll be curious to see what Teddy Bridgewater does with the Panthers. What's your read on the Falcons defense entering 2020 Well, it's an uncertain situation obviously went on God. Dante Fowler, Dad's pressure off the edge contact. McKinley realized what they thought they had when they drafted him a couple of years and the number one spot picked up Charles Haley, who, ironically, was in the same draft. And raided a route the same attack McKinley are Charles Harris. I'm sorry. Charles. Charles Charles Haley. Right way. I'd like to have the guy that was rushing the pastor there for both the Cowboys in the 40 Niners. That would be great, but Harris. He does have some raw talent there. Can't he realize that I'm the Falcon Tutelage will have to wait and see Grady dear. It's an emerging star in the tackle position and Marlon Davidson, Vienna and an interesting ad, a guy that has the versatility to play inside. Maybe in past situations and also play the perimeter as a 34 defensive didn't run down situations. The answer at all Burn second round draft pick of the fact that they think they've upgraded their defensive line. It'll have to be upgraded because you get extremely young secondary. Probably gonna have a rookie a corner starting your nickels, a second year guy in your other corners of third year, guys, So there's a lot of young players on the perimeter need to get some pass rush speed up the thought process for the quarterback. Let's get to the final down. Alright. I'm surprised that Dan Quinn is Bacca's the head football coach for the Lancer Falcons. What does he have to do this year to keep his job and Is that seats the warm because, like I said, I was surprised that they brought him back for this year. It is warm. I think that it's fortunate they brought him back because of the current situation with the pandemic and the uncertainties, so some continuity certainly has played into Atlanta Falcons off season. I think they've had a solid offseason, much as you can, with the limitations. They're attached to this year, So I think that it was good in retrospect that, uh, Mr Black decided to keep Dan Quint on, but I think he's got there. They've got a bit pushed for a playoff spot. I think they've got to be. They can't come out of the box one in seven. It's got to be a team. It's in the hunt of the entire way. As you said, it's going to be outstanding division with outstanding quarterback play, but they have to be in the hunt to be a part of the postseason play. If they do that. And I think the fans will be a little bit of stab on the wound for the fans. But if you get out to a slow start, it would not surprise me. If if Mr Blank made some kind of decision mid season on coach Boy and I think, coach when is the right guy for the job Now it's put up or shut up. He scored a touchdown will go for two here Oscar. One more question This team was 11 5 We all know the deal they were in the Super Bowl blew the 28 23 lead. The next year, they did go 10 and six, the last two years. It's seven and nine. If you had to identify the biggest reason why this team has regressed, and I know they've had some injuries to but overall if it's not the health of the team, what's the biggest thing that you look at? Why this team wasn't able to recreate that magic from 2016 and 2017? I think their inconsistency ball on both sides of the football in conversion, down situations and in the red zone. I think Atlanta's done a great job of moving the ball from 20 to 20 But when they get in the red zone, they bogged down and settle for too many threes. And I think in turn the defense's side of the football. What about 22 23 scoring defense coming up 25 points a game. They've got to find a way to get more stops in the red zone. That's probably the answer that you could probably get from all teams struggled and not made the playoff teams, but I certainly think That that's identifiable with the Falcons over the last couple years, the inability down deep in the red Zone both on offensive defense, Julio Jones, he's Ah Hall of Fame player. We all know that one of the better wide receivers in the league He's only had one year of double digit touchdowns, going back to 2012 when he had 10 TUC maybe 10 touchdowns in his fortunes this year. Well, I think he's certainly capable of it. But you got an outstanding receiver on the other side of Calvin Ridley, who's realized his abilities down in the red Zone Pretty close. I think Aidan hearse is going to be a seamless transition from Austin Hooper tight end spot So there are a lot of weapons from that Ryan to get the football too. Don't forget Todd Gurley and how good he is at the back catching the football as well. So I I would say no, I think he's going to be 89 touchdowns. I don't think he goes double digits, but I think there's a lot of guys around him. They're going to score touchdowns. Look for guys somewhere between 13 14 guys catch touchdown passes issue. Say that we appreciate it. Thanks so much. You be well, my

New York makes liquor-infused ice cream legal
"Ice cream does what it says on the box box selling selling that that sweet sweet treat treat that that could could you you could could leave leave you you sloppy sloppy has has just just been been made made possible possible in in New New York York through through a a bill bill passed passed by by the the Legislature Legislature there, there, but but What's What's the the legality of selling products infused with booze? Relatively legal correspondent Amy Feldman takes a look. For those of you slapping your foreheads, wondering why nobody thought of that before and why you had to pick up both an ice cream cone and a beer like a commoner. If you wanted to get both fat and drunk, the fact is infusing products with alcohol is not a new concept, and the FDA knows it. Most cough medicines contain alcohol, some as much as 40% of the product. Mouthwash also contains alcohol as to common extracts like vanilla. Under the law, The ingredient list must contain the alcohol and what percent of the product it comprises. Although many people don't read the label, and even so, it's hard to tell how much you can eat before you're tipsy. So your lawyer will tell you to avoid driving. Abby Wambach: If you're not a good leader on the bench, you cannot call yourself a good leader on the field.
"Hey everyone. This show might sound a bit different today because we're skimming from three different couches. The scam is still working from home for the time being because of covid nineteen. Today, we have a very special guest joining us abby Wambach is here with us on skin from the couch she is a two time Olympic gold medalist, a FIFA World Cup champion, and a member of the national soccer hall of fame. Also, she hasn't slowed down in retirement she is now a New York Times. Author and equal pay activists. We I had the pleasure of meeting abby when we spoke to her wife, Glennon Doyle on the show in March and we dragged her onto the podcast as well, and if you haven't listened to that episode, go check it out. It's a good one abby. Thank you so much for joining us today. Welcome to skin from the catch. Yeah. Thanks for having me. I'm so thrilled and honored to be with you all on three different couches. Thou-. Before. We jump into our first question I have to tell you I was looking at our prep for this and there was one bullet in here. That has really made me laugh as I have to share it, which is that you used to have a special card that got you a free Burrito a day from AAA but it stopped working when you're retired that seems passive aggressive for sure to Poli what the F.. Yeah. So when I first got this card, it was Gosh I must've been ten years ago now and you know like the gold cards portly for life like essentially my name is on it and you guys don't know how I go way back. From the early days and I mean I would get a Burrito. Day You guys we're both creatures of habits. I respect this. Yeah. It was crazy and this is before we really knew how many calories were in each burrito. Bowl that I would make or Burrito early days. and. So then yeah, of course when I retired, I was super excited to still be able to get one free Burrito a week for year, but they never really checked up on it but then I think when I got a family when I married Glenn and attained. That you know fifteen dollar meal. Turned into a sixty five dollar meal or seventy dollars meal for the whole family and pull was like I. Don't know if we're GONNA keep floating this for her so. It was a good run while it lasted I'm sorry that you've struggled with that but I did make me laugh as read. So, we're going to jump into our very first question. We'd like to ask everybody it just skim your resume skin my resume. It's so funny because when you retire, that's like that's essentially what I've had to do over the last four or five years of my life since retiring from playing on the national team, and if people don't really know I played for a long time on our women's national team. So Ski. My life I'm the youngest of seven children I grew up in Rochester New York, and I went to the University of Florida and played soccer there for four seasons where after I was drafted number two by the way just remember this folks you don't get drafted number one. You can still succeed I was drafted number two out of college to go play for a team called The Washington freedom the best player in. The world at the time. Mia. Hamm played on that team and it really changed my life because we were able to develop a connection that then transferred into me getting called into the national team and playing on the national team in scoring goals in the national team, and then I had a pretty long career representing his country won a gold medal. I want a couple of medals actually I won a fee. For Women's World Cup. World. Cup. I should say it doesn't matter if you're a guy or girl that's pretty awesome in my retirement I have kind of taken on this activism role that when I play ironically when I played I was a little bit more like just go and do my job and we were going to show our activism rather than talk about it. But when you quit playing, you gotta actually transfer that. Because I can't play anymore I can't show it in the ways that I used to. So I've transitioned into becoming a public speaker and an activist and apparent and wife, and that is my skin. Has a great skin? What is it like to be really good at something where young 'cause I have? No clue. Yeah I mean it's confidence building you know I felt like. Okay. I know that I'm good at this thing over here but I think you know all of us have our little things right? Like no matter what kind of. Place we grew up or family we grew up in or what kind of trauma we we experienced as a child because we all do some of US feel like we're unlovable my case in particular some of us were neglected. Some of us were over parented like we all have problems inside of our family dynamics that for me really allowed me to and gave me the courage to propel in this kind of an individualistic career. So when I was young I kind of was a very big risk taker. I was a free spirit is what they called me, I think that's what they call children who don't follow the rules as much as their parents want them to and I think that the other side of that coin is I was really trying to get the attention of my parents, right. So the very thing that might have felt trauma or hardship from in my childhood is the very thing that made me successful. So I have to always remember that like as much as I as young as seven children. As much as all of us wanted the attention of our parents, I do think that kind of parent team actually shaped me and and allowed me to explore this competitiveness inside. In this drive and this embiid to go after what I needed and what I wanted. So I give a lot of credit to that form of parenting into that trauma
Armor on Butterfly Wings Protects Against Heavy Rain, Study Finds
"Apparently Butterfly Wings are built like armor to protect them against heavy rain a June study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences analyzed how water repellent properties on the butterfly's wings protect them against Raines impacts quoting dot org. The research showed how micro-scale bumps combined with a scale layer of wax shatter and spread these drops to protect fragile surfaces from physical damage and hyperthermic risk. Previous studies have looked at water hitting insects and plants at low impacts of noted, the liquids cleaning properties, but in nature, raindrops can fall at rates of up to ten meters per second. So this research examined how raindrops falling at high speeds interact with super hydrophobic natural surfaces and quotes. Senior Authors, Soon Juan young associate professor of Biological Environmental Engineering College of Agriculture and Life Sciences pointed out that raindrops are one of the biggest risks for butterflies getting hit by a raindrop for butterfly is like getting hit by a bowling ball for a human. For the study, the researchers placed the insects as well as samples of leaves and feathers on a table and released droplets of water from two meters above they recorded the experiment at several thousand frames per second so that they could watch back in ultra slow at which time they discovered that when the water hit the surface, it rippled and spread on the Nanos scale wax layer while the micro-scale bumps created holes in the droplet quoting again, consider the micro bumps as needles young said, if one dropped a balloon onto these needles, he said, then this balloon would break into smaller pieces. So the same thing happens as the raindrop hits and spreads end quotes. Not. Only does this reduce the impact force, but it also lowers the heat transfer from the cold drop, which enables the insects muscles to retain enough warmth to fly. Instead, he's like this aren't just interesting to learn more about butterflies and feel at ease knowing that they're relatively okay during big storms like today's but also these types of studies can inform consumer products. So called bio mimicry products in this field have already led to water resistant sprays for clothes and shoes, as well as the de Icing coatings for airplanes. There is so much weird and cool stuff from animals and. Nature. So thinking about how we can adapt some of it for humans is extra fascinating to me is all the other day that someone had redesigned the umbrella to open and close upside down so that you theoretically don't get as much water all over you. But what if we can coat on with some of this manno scale wax and micro bumps so that they repel water I mean that would be pretty cool.
Solving the Murders of Katherine and Sheila Lyon
"Not like we're just talking about it for any kind of thrill. We're talking about it because we need to know what's going on in our society that's making this happen really drew. Okay, so we'll start John. Lyon, met his future wife. Xavier. University in Cincinnati. They were both students there. His wife Mary was from Erlanger Kentucky John was the Chicago. Boy. They married in Air Langer and had their first child a boy they named. Jay. Then after graduation John got a job at a radio station in Ohio, that's where Sheila was born. then. He worked at a radio station Illinois and Catherine more and they're. Following that John worked in both TV and radio in Peoria. He was on a daytime children's program where he played the guitar and Banjo. And in that same time period, nary was in a folk band. And then she gave birth to their youngest child Joe. Some pretty cool people I. Think they sound very interesting. He does. And she s in a folk band I. think that's really cool and it was the seventies. So they were kind of hit by guests. Yeah, probably. John's hard work eventually paid off. You got hired at W. M. A., l.. which at the time, the seventies was the most popular radio station in Washington, D.. C.. And John, was a pretty talented radio personality. So working at this station's worked as a fill in disc jockey, he read the news and he performed in a band, the multitask. Yeah John and Mary were both Pretty Witty People very well-spoken. So March Twenty, ninth nineteen, seventy, five was unseasonably warm in the suburbs of Washington. DC. Catherine. And Sheila Lyon. Ages ten and twelve were on spring break from school. John had worked the night shift the night before and drove home at six. Am that morning and went to bed. She learned Catherine. went to the Wheaton Mall. They had two dollars between them and they plan to get two slices of pizza. And Mary was happy to see them go together. She led the older one, didn't always want to spend time with their little sister, but recently, the two would become close played together like friends. But John Woke up that afternoon to an empty house. Mary had gone bowling and the boys were off playing with friends in the neighborhood. Mary came home with their younger boy. Joe Soon, after John Woke up, then he went back to bed for nap before dinner and Mary went and Rick. Some leaves in their backyard. When the sun began to go down, Mary really began to worry about her daughters. They were usually really good about being home for dinner and Sheila would call if they were at a neighbor's house playing. But Sheila had called and there had been no sign of the girls. But this is nineteen, seventy five. Your mind is not going to go to objection at this point. Nobody really thought like that. No, not then now. So they went ahead and had dinner with the two boys waiting for the girls to show up assuming they would. and. When there was still no word after they finish dinner Mary began calling around to all of their friends. No one had seen them though. So the family drove around looking for the girls and as time passed and they looked for their daughters in the Dr, the alarms really began to go off in their heads that something was wrong. So that's when they decided to call the police. But most runaways. The lions sisters, and they were nearly always found within twenty four hours. So when these girls were still missing overnight, the police began to realize that this was a case that was different. And the idea of follow play was becoming a real possibility at that point. The John and Mary told the police that this was just totally out of character for their girls both were honor roll students, and they both followed rules Catherine who went by Kate. Was the outgoing. Very Athletic,
Dr. Osterholm: Americans will be living with the coronavirus for decades
"Top infectious disease experts with some sobering words this morning on vaccines factor, my closer home, told ABC CEOs Paul Douglas. Even with a successful vaccine, the virus will remain forever. There's a 1,000,000,000 plus people in the face of the Earth, for which many will never have access access to a vaccine so that transmission continue around the world and because the world is one big mixing bowl, so we're always going to be challenged by having this virus around from here until eternity. He also told Paul that a recent study found that cloth masks are not doing well enough to protect people from contracting the virus.

Good to see you so last time we met in our studio in Malibu was only back in February and it seems like a whole lifetime ago in quite a year, and we're only halfway through it and we know. Know there's a lot more to come Howard. I hope you'll forgive me, but I took my nasty pill this morning, so I want to dive into a difficult issue, but as the time of this recording according to Johns Hopkins, Japan although infected early has less than one cova death per hundred thousand population, while the US has thirty nine Cova deaths per one hundred thousand population. Japan more elderly per capita than any other country. They kept their borders open during the Wu Han locked down there, stay home requests by Japanese. Government have been voluntary, as was any of the closing of their non essential businesses. And now for a country with one city that houses more than thirty seven million people. They have less than a thousand deaths countrywide, but the hell is going on I. Don't know that anyone knows exactly all of the differences, but I'll give you. Some and I think that may be different. One is there's probably a genetic component to this disease that we don't quite understand. People were speculating. Why was so much more Italy because Italian get together a lot more than others people wonder with net net might have been some genetic predisposition. She decided kind storms for example, another article morbidity in patient population, so age is one thing you're right. Japanese population is actually older than the US. By other commodities like obesity, which is turning out to be a significant risk factor here is unfortunately. It's still a lot more obesity united. States than there is Japan so just because we've sorted out that the age factor may not explain it, but we have some more chronic illness in the United States spend maybe contributing to it as well and then you know the way we've handled. Handled the public health aspect of this and again I also wanted to be very careful about criticism of even the public health system because I'm sure there's a lot of things we look back and could have done differently, but we also have a lot of public health officers. Some extremely courageous ones and I'll say that I think unfortunately a some of our public does not really believe. Believe in this pandemic, the seriousness that they should, and that may be affecting the outcomes as well. There are certain communities as you know. Where substantial numbers of people were having just seemingly significant disregard, and so that might have been large numbers coming in at a just a bowl of people coming in all the ones that saturated the healthcare system made it hard to take care of. Of someone people possibly people coming in later than they should have because perhaps denial about the significance of the Selma's when it is on severe, and it's not be causing a doctor that I. don't WanNa Fault. The nurses and the doctors and rest of just I've seen what they're doing. My follow it very carefully, and I'm very proud of them, but I think because of the. The differences in population and our public health system is not working well is not resigned the way it should be, and there's not functioning in the way that it has been planned to function the

It was fun and you were. Do I understand this correctly? You were an alternate at one point to be on to actually bowl on the king of TV bowling on the junior stars of the king of Kings King of TD bowling Back in the day there was some really good young bowlers. I think our rob carpenter. I believe I believe he was a very good Bowler del fair lanes. I could be wrong. He can ask him that. One guy named Greg Locie and a guy named Alpha way yet. I called for the traveling team at Super Bowl and and So what a bunch of us would do was We would go try to qualify for the for the King of TV bowling. And I got to alternate for June. Tennis once and I can recall I had a neighbor up the streets where I lived in Florence a guy named Burke who was a longtime. Popovich had just come to town pinch host four and I can remember going sexy. Skip death that guy. What's getting bad? Episode is on the King of TV Bowling Youtube pay. I want that episode. There you go all right. Well I mentioned how well rounded and well versed on what is happening today. You mentioned earlier you part of building the batting cages. "I want you guys to be. There and Kenya agrees right Kenya. And she's like aren't agree and it was like funny. That like Kenya was put in this place but the same time also so it was just so obnoxious. March you do that. You know so passive aggressive and I rub me the wrong way you know but at the same time like how much how much of it's you have to take of your partner just starting. Shit and always trying to start fights everywhere you go you know. I don't think that you're automatically. I don't think you're automatically. You should automatically be forced to take that you know. It's ridiculous like Kenya to Kenya's not even her. I don't know it's hard because I obviously this guy's an asshole but can't use such an asshole to that. I can't just like come all the way down on his on her side and that's really sad. That's how bad Kenya is the guy this much of a fucking monster and I'm like well I don't know I think I think it's it's I have the sort of a different take on it. Which is that just shows. How much more monster? This guy is willing to exonerate Kenya. That's my flip of it. You know I just think that like yes. She does like stupid stupid petty things but I think ultimately she made her. She made it very clear several times that she doesn't want them there and mark still went ahead and invited so then she retaliates by doing this really really passive aggressive thing by only tagging greg. Which by the way that this is such a thing. Like ooh but she agreed that she would invite me to that event she just went in and didn't tack need to keep. Shit going you know he's just like can I have a decent fucking event? My God like we agree that you're GonNa let me come to the event but not bowling night or whatever the hell it is but then you're gonna not tagger and keep this shit going. You know stupid. Well I think he's a huge back. Of course he is. Yeah but I think that also he'd like but he does it. It's I see what you're saying but he's still executes that in a way where he is putting his wife down in public and makes her look should he in public and I don't know like I maintain. They look petty in public by doing shit like that by saying okay. We'll invite meaning but I'm going to publicly humiliate her by not tagging her on purpose. You know so. They're throwing at each other. It's like seeing. It's like you just you can't. I cannot pick a side in this. 'cause it's like horrible people being horrible people and I think they fucking deserve each other and they're both terrible. I think that they're a horrible people going at each other. I just think that like I think that he is. I think this case. He is more of the offender because this is the culmination of a so many times. When he's done this shit like a he just. He's always his always being so obnoxious to her like in front of her friends or whatever and I just don't think I think in terms of like a husband and wife relationship I just think that's like bullshit and I think she is. She's a piece of work but if she is now they must sack. I'm just saying I'm staying on my side. They both suck okay. That's fine. I'm not any asleep over. Yeah I'm I'm finding firmly by. They both suck Listen I think we all agree on that point. That's one thing that we can all. That's one thing that unites all of America they both saw back but I'd rather see her on my TV than him. How about that yeah? I don't want him on my TV. I don't want her on my TV. Either see I want her on my TV. Don't want him. I want her on my TV a lot. So anyway he's talking to. They're both you know Kenya standing there. But he's basically talking to both needy and Greg and They're watching CA. All the girls are watching Kenya to sit there silently and candies dot whimsyway with him. She's main zone when she's with us she's hell on wheels. You know so. They're all noticing this and mark is like can we just can we just put the ego away? And he's like of course like acting like yeah this was never her and then she gets Kenya because she's like thank you. I really appreciate it can. Yeah that's an issue. I'm just either an issue because I don't have an issue just wants you to know. I don't have an issue or you have an issue so so mean girl and Kenya's like we can talk another time. Okay we can talk with my dad's not here. Yeah and then. He's like well. I just want you to know I don't have any issues. Okay and Kim Media Nice try. I'll still yell at you later so for nine being so fake and that's where it ended in. Kenya is over talking to mark and she's passed. Well you got everything you want it. You got the whole family to come together. And he's like. Oh no I what we wanted. We're team yeah terrible terrible team. That never makes the playoffs. Yup well and that was the end of that next week. It looks like maybe Kenya. Markets Finally GonNA end. Who knows I mean we do know it ends in real life? Although she did post a picture of mark with the baby on instagram. Last week I don't even know I can't keep track. I'm I guess we'll just have to keep watching Yup and keep will yep. We'll be back. Oh cable or like. I think you'd think your precise Shaw I'm I'm a backhander. I don't know if that's a problem or not. We have a guy who backhands they call them Schwarzer in the league he just walks up and backhands it and I am so your back hammer backhander I I don't it doesn't feel natural coming off the regular way. Do you have your own ball. I know you know but I got to go to the bowling. God I gotta get one time. Do you think he'd fit you if he knew candidate debating that my body's when we went bowling last week how's it. What do you think of? I tell me I'm back. He would just instantly be disappointed. I think and he would turn out of business now. He probably wouldn't turn on the business but he'd be mad. What type tall do you pick when? What House Ball you get? How heavy? I don't like them heavy. It's the same thing with a back. You know what I mean to be sub for softball like I like it light. You think Barry Bonds would use a twelve pounder. Oh my God. Barry Bonds Produce fucking heavy idiot of costume ball so you think so I think he chokes up. You think so. I thought Barry Bonds used a heavy bat no thirty to thirty inch..

"Alright Bank today is Tuesday September tenth Chicago Dog Walk. If you didn't listen yesterday you gotta go listen to it yesterday as part one with the bowling guy from Simmons pro shop this. She's part two so let's hop right into it like I said if you listen yesterday's hop right into it and then hop right back to this one all right. Let's take over your questions. I beg the question so back to the interview. which are we talking about shoes? What about the vending machines that had the stocks. Are you pro or con designed for somebody. You should wear socks bowl. It has but it's basically just a person has to red sox. The bullets way. wearable bowling alley makes fun okay so you're okay with that. There's no actually better you. Don't want to wear a house you without socks. What about kids walk runner out the bowling alleys do tend to like. Do you like a more serious game or see personally. My game is serious but this great that the kids are bowl. It gets back into game. That's our number one problem in this industry mystery. Today is that lack of bowling lack of kids the bowling industry is trying to get kids back into the game because the if you're talking to. League bowlers the top the common age for let's say men's. League bowlers is in the in the late forties. Which is I mean? It's an old person sport losing not young people are not committing to bowling leagues so I know one problem in bowling. Did it really so so they're they're kind of the trajectory. Major League Baseball is almost gone through the same thing and you know football. Kids are little bit because it can cost you a little bit Kevin. This case the kids you know playing last soccer sports so the plane is on the video games in their computers. Also we're trying to get kids back into the game and hopefully it'll stay in the the aim even as they grow into young adults. Do you think a controversial solution to this problem. Is I know sometimes you call leagues and they don't have room because the older guys are in there so they start removing older teams now at that. I don't worry that information or your make up but the point is you call any bowling alley this time of year and you. WanNa join a League to calm says I want to join a league. They're gonNA take on. What's the best league in the area like what's a really strong long. Legal say that's a question that is too hard to answer. visit all depends on who you are if you're bowling in a if you're bowling in a top top level bowl with very high average. You're going to look for a league with a lot of money in it. Butler at has not ler bowl has a really good league Friday night not Wednesday night if you're just when most people are recreation pure recreational not looking for big making money at it then the every house has got good. Have you ever bowled a four hundred or three hundred twelve twelve three hundred's above twelve. Do you remember all twelve now now do your everybody remembers the first. Can you walk me through that first one through twelve but you know like what kind of Collared Shirt were you wearing pancakes for breakfast. No nothing like that. We're talking fifty. What is this eighty nine so we're talking ordering. Take whatever it says up to. Nothing really sticks out for that day well. That's it's always a three hundred. Everything's all right. That'd be the fair enough. Fair enough. Now is it. Is there like a bowler around here. That's like a legendary bower like anyone. That's like to be reckoned with cycle. Aw I tom best average his name in we can't pronounce slashing but he's known J. JR Turkey Tummy a little watch our he's just a real nice guy averages around thirty so he'd probably the best bowling. I know of in this area how many three hundred forty eight forty eight it somewhere. Do you watch professional bowling and who's favorite bowler on the tour. Norm Duke probably waste hours watching a bowl of P. Weber fine. I I do see that celebration. And who do you think you are. I am just trying to be you think bullying could use more of that more pizazz more flare. No No yes you're real straight by the mine watching bowl and all those years was was on channel seven growing up very exciting so then that makes often golf me more flare somewhat argue rights on maybe no oh problem watching Golfer for eight hours. A day chores here big golfer to offer them both but yes. I like playing sports kind of bodes well though so golf in the summer you're pulling in the winter sports together. Nice recreational activities on your professional bowlers are scratch. Golfer very close so you say if your old school how much you hate cosmic bowling. Is that ruining the sport. I don't know if it's ruined. The sport is taken this for what's happened to Bowling League. Bowling is the backbone of this sport. That's the backbone and some bowling some.

How many balls do you have like on the you know to work on today four five six before customers get four. What is the lunches. Get right into what the key to a good ball round route so there's nothing. What do you mean by that question. Like what not like. Is it the finger grip. That's cornered away. One group grip wages important. What's the distribution. The wait is wrong. That's not you're not going to be able to throw autorite if if the if the grip doesn't fit you that's number one doesn't matter what waited like having a good fitting shoes or a pair of glasses you you gotta be able to see out of your eyeglasses. Walk Shoes on. Do you have a rule of thumb though it shouldn't jammed in there right. It's Thanksgiving Turkey but it should be. It shouldn't be too loose. That's where it's like. You're a very hard question to answer so people would understand it. Basically what we call proper thought. Most people would call to most people use the house balls call too tight okay. Most people are used to house balls which the holes or two two big spans with two short. I have an inkling. I have a suspicion that you're not a fan of house balls. Nobody is they're. They're there to introduce you to the game in that there for you to bowl with the rest of your life okay so yours once a year and you. WanNa the House ball fine you bowl and three games four games a year. If you're bowling pretty steadily once a month definitely a league you should have your own bowl and earlier hand proper anybody who's worth shit. They have their own ball are.
