Deaths spiral: Americas spike in murders

"With the attention of the world media focused on the pandemic last year. it may have seemed as if there were fewer of the mass shootings for which america has become notorious this year. Lamentably there's no mistaking the trend on march sixteenth gunman in atlanta apparently targeted asian-americans. Grisly new details tonight. The atlanta spa shootings tax three massage parlours. In the northern suburbs of the city eight people were murdered. Roughly one hour six of them. Asian women days later ten more deaths at a supermarket in colorado shooting house claimed at multiple lives as the police put it in boulder. We had a very tragic incident today. Here at the king supers There was loss of life second mass shooting with multiple deaths and just one week in this country. Three killed at a house party gone wrong. North carolina six members of the same family in texas a mother and her two children shot by a man who then took his own life in new york. Those murders just in the first week of this month. The pandemic has led to reductions in many types of crime but in america murders seem only to be on the rise. The greatest rise in perhaps half a century twenty twenty was a traumatic year for america. Not only was there the covid nineteen pandemic which at this point is killed. Five hundred fifty thousand people but there was a huge uproar over racial justice in the wake of the deaths of unarmed. Black man in police custody that swept through the country in june injuries. Cologne is the economists. Washington correspondent both those things may have contributed to an extraordinary increase in murder in america and figuring out what trauma twenty twenty clauses increase in violence. I think is going to be really important going forward.

Those who remember them you young and she was one of the therapists roma therapy spa. She loves to cook food. Carrie okay with my family. My mom loved to do the same things as well. I asked several at the activists come back in such a brutal rainy nice and what it meant for them to stand in silence holding these placards of these lives lost artist lecturer an activist yong-sung had the events that unfolded especially in atlanta. Last week Really i felt it really deeply The president i felt fair there was interest section between Violence against women. Especially someone holding one of their portrait's and someone that understood what it feels like to go through that Racism hatred bigotry and the violence Perpetrated by guns that reminded me of one. Fear community was affected during pulse. And there's other Communities like latinos luck around community that his face. Similar threats Teaching math mass shootings White pillars so as much as. You know this was a human being just like you. And i got a life and family and then for no fault of their own. They were murdered. So yeah i think. It's very very powerful demonstration. I ask as against guns co founder. J w walker what we can do to help end this epidemic. There are seven pending pieces of control legislation right now to have recently passed in the house there around surrounding background jackets. There is legislation to once again ban assault weapons. We had that for ten years. Nineteen ninety four thousand four. When congress under president george w bush allowed it to expire and we have seen something like an over two hundred percent increase and mass shootings using semi automatic assault weapons since that since that dad expired and so we as gays against demand all of those bells seafloor floor votes in both houses of congress. "Boulder to take your guns. Don't believe me. I'm going to provide to you video evidence today of exactly their intentions because they're telling you them. And I'll show you again. Joe Biden debating himself on the issue. There's always a winner in that It's Joe Biden because he takes opposing positions on everything because he doesn't have a spine to stand up to his radical left this base. I got that and also Barack Obama re entering the political scene to stoke racial animus without Sharpton and others to make sure they can provoke the country into extreme racial animus because liberalism is a forest fire. Disgusting. Welcome to Dan Bongino show. Let's get right to it. I've got a ton of video today, a swell from other left this now want to dump the filibuster to come Take your guns. They are definitely committed to disarming America and making you helpless. That's been their agenda for a very, very long time now. All right, so let's go. Look at it. All right, so the gun grabbing begins. It only took two months. Joe Biden two months in office, already flip flopping on himself, debating himself because he has no spine can't stand up to the radical left. They have no evidence at all any of their gun grabbing measures have ever worked or will work. But evidence never got in the way of a Democrat, pushing a talking point. We've arrived at two of our program and this act. We moved from people who are saving us from something very large to saving us from something tiny. Act to the other extinguishers so The people in this active in working at a task some of them for years and this has been in the news in just the last few weeks. They've actually succeeded. It looks like they got their border up. To the top of the hill david kastenbaum spoke with four scientists. Who've been working on a coronavirus vaccine one of the ones that was just shown to be effective. David was a scientist early career. They worked at fermilab and from the coverage he could not understand what exactly they had done in any detail and wanted to know. That and who these people were and especially. How does it feel to have helped. Make a thing that could save so. Many lives fixed global economy. Get life back to normal again for everybody. Here's david i'm going to tell you the story of some of the people who made this one tiny thing. It's a key thing that's in at least five of the vaccines that are being tested. If you get the vaccine shot in the coming months this thing will probably be injected into your body and it could save your life and the story of all this. You could start at all sorts of places. I'm going to begin here in china. I'm from a very small village around the east coast shannon province and both. My parents are farmers. This neon shawn wong. His way into science was playing outside noticing bugs and locusts scorpions. Just curious about stuff. Yeah why are we can sing why we need to eat food. Yeah i'm curious about all those. It's funny for me. It was when i was in like tenth grade. I think i learned about newton's equation for gravity and i learned that that explained to both the orbits of the planets. And when you dropped the ball. And i was like i'm in that's amazing. There's an equation that describes both of those perfectly. It was the rules behind the thing. It was the same thing you know. Yeah beautiful stuff. Yeah when i. I emailed the strong. He was super excited to talk. Said no one had really interviewed him about all that he had done got himself a scholarship to one of the top universities and the thing he found himself gravitating toward is this field called structural biology which i think favors a particular kind of person. You're basically trying to figure out what molecules look like where all the atoms are. So you can tell how something works. Or if it's a virus had a fight and the thing is people work for years trying to figure out the structure of one tiny molecule. The traditional way of doing it is that you get a bunch of those molecules and try to get them to lay out in a neat repeating pattern. Then you hit him with these powerful rays which gives you just this pattern of dots. Then you have to apply these mathematical algorithms and sometimes it's just not solvable. It really is pushing a boulder to the top of a hill. They rolls down over and over. The was good at it. Though first thesis he worked out the structure of part of a corona virus. Not this coronavirus virus. This was years ago. It was a corona virus. That was making the news back then. The murs rotavirus because it caused middle east respiratory syndrome. After that he needed the job. So he reached out to a guy who was also looking into mirrors jason mcclellan at dartmouth. How would your friends describe you. I have no idea fund good to hang out with like having a beer or two. I was gonna save the world. Not anyone's raider yen. Chong came over to the states to work with jason and his team. This was two thousand fourteen six years before the pandemic they wanted to make a vaccine for mergers and one of the things they were trying to figure out back them. There would be a key for the vaccine. We have today was had a manufacturer copies of the tiny spikes there were all over the surface of the merge corona virus the spikes or why they're called corona viruses. The virus have corona a wreath of these little spikes sticking out all over it. The spike is the part that sticks to your cells when it gets in your body. Let's the virus break into your cells and start replicating it's the scary part of the thing away if they could make just the spikes without a deadly virus attached to them. Maybe they could train your immune system to recognize the virus and fight it but it turned out to be damn hard to make the spikes in the lab. Basically you stick the genetic code for the spike into some cells. What are the cells lease to either show cells. Chinese hamster ovary cells or H e k two thousand three cells which whether human embryonic kidney cells essay. I don't know why. I wanted to know all this except that. This is the kind of knowledge. Because it's gonna save our asses. The problem was when they got the genetic code for the spike into those cells. They did start spitting out spikes but the sales weren't making a lot of them and the spikes on their own were unstable. They kept changing into the wrong shape. Wrong spent a long time trying to stabilize them. Add something to tweak the genetic code try again again there's a tedium and try. It takes awhile around two or three weeks two or three weeks so you start at like march first. By the third week in march you'd be done with that test and most of the time it fails. Yes and then you start again and then you don't know for another three weeks if that new thing works yes yes by the way can do like at the same time as Oh so you do twenty of them at the same time. Oh yeah we did a lot actually and every time you tried this in your mind. Are you like this time. it's gonna work. Yeah sometimes it's going to work if we work. I woke up this project. Yuli got disappointed. It's funny that you're so optimistic. Because most of the time it fails right it just keeps failing and failing. Yeah that that's kind of the life as beginning this kind of lab work. It's like cooking but for the fussy est restaurant ever lots of little precise.

"I met up with a little t hotshots again on their very last night at can. They were about to get to go home for two days. They stood up from the rest of the scraggly and bearded dirty men in the parking lot. Everyone on little t was showered. Clean-shaven it's a crew tradition in one of the buggies. The guys are watching a dodgers game on a little tv electoral and happy. Even though they just heard the fire season might get extended and other two months into january. That's something that would have been hard to imagine a few years ago again. Here's break like a lot of the crew. They're contractors who get laid off at the end of the season. What do you think about the season. Possibly going all the way. Until jesus is so excited we were all excited his foot when they asked everybody on this cruise hand shot up going on and on and on each other honestly each other the synergy. The family dynamics all positive attitude matters. You cannot have a negative. Get away it here. I would say probably impossible if you don't have a good attitude but when you're having a really bad day what do you tell yourself sound. So we're i totally get why it sounds weird. But that's like a big thing that we have is like no bad days on the worst day. It's not that bad like it can always be worse if you be cheaper. Colder tooth as a lot of people don't last more than a few years at this job the adrenaline high eventually wears off and they move on to other jobs jobs. That are easier on their families. One of the hardest parts of hot shotting is just how much they're on the road. More of their life is spent out at fires than at home this season little. Tease been on back to back assignments. Since june nevada utah arizona. All up and down california the way their assignments workers they go out for fourteen or twenty one days at a time that only get two days off before shipping out again. With all the overtime. It's good money. One of the guys on the crew said he'd make seventy thousand after taxes so some of them don't really work during the offseason while they're out fighting virus life goes on without them. They're reminded of this and in very literal way. They often go without cell service for days. And then the second they get back in range. There've been bartered by everything they've missed. Jogging dollars is one of the captains. Little t some guys over one hundred messages of day. You're thinking thinking of someone who's in the truck right now. What is the situation. This is a busy year for us as she doesn't understand that one of my guys he's just he just can't be on his fall time you know. And then when he does get server is many times shooting the messenger so like how many on the low end maybe like in the in the twenties in the high end maybe over one hundred. Call me call me. Where are you what the fuck what's going on. He'll talk to me about it. I won't throw the bus. I get a lot pete. How come women don't understand what we do. Why doesn't she get it again. Here's pete the squad boss who gets tripped up by the crew. He says they're constantly asking him for relationship advice. He keeps it pretty simple. Sit down and talk. Put yourself in her shoes but the problem is they never actually have time to use it. I could title that today this morning but then he never makes it home to be able to do that. And now it just turns into worse and worse and worse and unfortunately it doesn't work. It's really hard to understand or even sometimes believe that you're gone so long or believe that you're on fire writing. You have service you know. why don't you have service. I just talked to you a minute ago. We know hiking. And i had service for one second and now it's gone and now don't hear from you again for three or four days. We can explain that. Yeah they've already been a couple breakup. This season pizzas first. Marriage ended in divorce because he was gone so much. I'm like this guys. he's year round. He was on a fire when his son was born in. This season. missed his daughter's birthday. Pete offense girls through photos of them on his cellphone. Preaching my boy. He showed me one of his son. Now eleven competing was that cool getting to be at his own. Why didn't make it to this one. A picture they sent me. I've been to some of his meets too many yet. It's fun definitely fun watching them. I always very forgiving view. Being gone not being there for the big things in their life. I like to say yeah because i think they don't know any different. They think it's the norm you know that's always gone working. I think thank you guys from. His crew stopped by his truck. This happened all the time while i was talking to him. See so they brought me my breakfast. They brought me my lunch. It's like the first thing on their plate. Okay we gotta take care of of pete and then we'll do our thing if it becomes too where you become very cater to normal in real life. It's not like that. I mean your kids are going to talk back. Your wife is again a want different things different. It's gonna be a different type of reaction and somebody has been doing this so long. Somebody like myself out a lot of these other guys. You don't want to deal with that because it's a lot easier here. It's a lot easier.

What is going through your head. When you hear that defeats i wanna go home. Look like oh no no no. I don't wanna do this way. This job works. Is this come back from the fire. Line and dump huge piles of jumbled hoses five guys untangle them and then with each hose they take one end a quarter and sprint across the parking lot. Each one hundred feet long so it's kind of a long way to go. They got a bright yellow hose next to another next to another. The whole. Parking lot is blanketed with tiny yellow hose. What do you do to keep yourself. Say when you're rolling hoses rj. Be about music in my head. I have already listened to and it keeps keeps me going. They're not allowed to wear headphones on. This job is team corey roe. V has a different strategy to deal with that. I get out and i tell everybody on your mind lately can break my stride. Last night i had stage history. Isolated china in a little boat defined. Your ain't nobody going to keep going head next step. In this process they wind hoses up in coils. But the main pallet. Wrap them in plastic wrap and send them to be cleaned after that. Those go out after the fire. Line again then back to the hose rowing crews then back to the place where the clean over and over week after week after week which is fire camp. Yeah the same day over and over and over till the fires out Leakey visited creek. Fire had been going for nearly two months and burn more than three hundred fifty thousand acres five hundred square miles putting out a fire. That large is a mammoth task. Base camp that mickey metallurgy and korea is like a mini city with makeshift laundromat cafeteria mechanic. Shop sleep trailers with triple bunk beds like most people at the camp korean rj. Sixteen hour days and they sleep right on the asphalt great next where they work intensive pitched they sleep in their uniforms so they can squeeze in a few extra minutes of rest each morning. Here's what do you dream about it night. Jim yesterday was about hoses rolling. Always so mad. Like oh i can't take no breaks no days off but the thing about rj inquiry. They love their jobs. Despite the repetitiveness and exhaustion for this rj worked retail a car. Wash where had an office job coding. Now it feels like the part of something important team captains for the crew had this can-do attitude that it's actually kind of culture of this camp like i just make sure that the cruise. Pma is always at its highest positive mental attitude. Either me and ricky will see something like hey yeah just keeps up acronym yes i had never heard of that acronym. I could use some more pm in my life right now with the fire season running longer than ever seven or eight months out of the year. Now there's this entire ecosystem of people. Look good feel good today i. feel good about what Apple's going to announce and it's actually to talk. To you about that. Well, it's time for me to get a new phone I think. You said as much. super-secret private techs channel that you. I think I. Don't WanNa I. Don't WanNa, spill the beans here but but you'd said we both you know I don't know and I'll speak for myself. I I I watch these things I watched the thing the thing we're talking about here is the the big September event, which is October, like the world series now is that right when they do the world series I don't know anyway it's a bubble at Disneyworld and they are going to be a apple will be announcing. It is believed a new iphone other things you said to me hails let's wrap this early will button it up. We're going to be wheels down because we need to shift our attention. To to to to Tim, being cited about what we're GONNA do it this whenever that live from the show for thing, with my wife this morning I did I, did I, said, okay. Wait to see what you do with this and I realize them I cook is also my Bill Clinton. It's the same there one in the same game. With this. I did not have. Sexual intercourse with that system on chip. It's good. No, it's good i. mean it's thank you. So let's talk about this. We're GONNA DO SHORTY SHORTY. We're going to a griffin rip it. What. What is your situation with the phone and and what are you What are you looking for today my situation with the phone. The phone that I have is an iphone ten, not an aspirin or or an ex- are an X. L. S. or an X. T. or a premier. Is just a straight acts or as you say ten. And? It's been fine. Except that. The battery and we talk about this a couple of weeks ago I think the battery is is not doing. So well, I've got a charge multiple times throughout the day. And if I don't. Like I'll charge it as I'm driving into the studio and then I'll charge it if I run out and get lunch and I'll charge it as I'm going home I'll charge it when I get home. So that's not where I wanna be with phone so I Will Dan? So how many years old are we talking about here? Well, you know that this phone came out it was October of twenty seventeen I think about I think i. you know I feel like I can't prove this, but there's a million reasons might be, but I feel like the batteries. Go faster now maybe it's because we use these phones more maybe it's because we charge them more I. Mean I'm not a technologist I'm a season technologist not now not even seasoned, but but my sense is that like I mean I'm my phone from last year is that I think ninety two percent which seemed pretty fast for one year with a phone. He had that does that does That does seem fast salosa. First of all, very important low battery I mean there are certain things I think I have a couple of examples of this to there are things where I you know I'm not going to replace. This device because of this. Or this or this because there could be a better one coming out soon do like you know if you screen has scratches, you're probably not going to replace it based on a lot of people encounter. If it's shatter, they don't replace. It's costly for a lot of money right but but I mean like you know just because my batteries now. You know my my battery is basically a B. Plus like that doesn't I want to spend a grand to replace something if it's going be obviated. You know or even even having around. What do you? So you you better benefit. You know what I take this It it it's like darnall talking to our Arnie Cunningham in in Christine. When he says to pepper his assistant pepper at the garage, he says look how cockeyed works pepper he's got brand new windshield wipers for a busted windshield. WHOA. And that's how he says he's got.
