"Their own label of the Democratic Party. As Biden rolls out his nominees, progressive groups like Justice Democrats, which helped Alexandria Ocasio Cortez get elected. The environment oriented sunrise movement. Data for progress and others want someone like Bernie Sanders for Labor secretary burning himself, preferably Ah position not yet announced. You want the first Native American interior secretary? Maybe Congresswoman Deb Holland do not want Democratic regulars like Rahm Emanuel, who Biden is said to be considering for a big job. And this current dance is on Lee about the nominees. Then there will be the ones about actual policy. Joining me now for a progressive journalism and advocacy perspective of how the transition is going in these early days are Katrina Vanden Whoville, publisher and editorial director of the Nation. She's also a Washington Post columnist. And Karthik been apathy. A communications consultant who has been a spokesperson for progressive politicians, including Bernie Sanders, Keith Ellison and Charles Booker, as well as the A C L U and the Climate Change organization. 3 50 dot org's Perfect. Welcome in Katrina. Welcome back to W. N. Y C. Thank you, Brian. Thanks for having me. Between in general terms to start out. How happy are you with the emerging Biden Cabinet and feel free to name names? Feel free. First of all. Good morning, Brian. I want to just step back for a moment. We're coming out of a chaotic crisis ridden for years. Word moving toward at least restoration. Though I think in these times of multiple crisis, we need reconstruction. We need more than restoration. But in terms of No personnel is policy. I begin. Uh, as you know, I think we must in these times Begin with the more positive. I think Janet Yellen. Who will be first woman Treasury secretary represents one of Biden's more encouraging appointments. She appears to understand. We can't go back to the old ways of growth. She is someone who comes from the academy, not Wall Street. Many you know it hoped for Elizabeth Warren, but it's important that she doesn't come from Wall Street and have those ties. I do think the Biden And then you have Jared Bernstein in the National Council of Economic Advisors. He's a longtime advocate for the middle class. For growth. Avoiding this fetish with deficit reduction, which is afflicted. I think Democrats for decades, Heather Boucher has been at the forefront of understanding the need for Paid leave. And if someone who's written for the nation, as has Jared On that's I find hopeful. I moved to the foreign policy team. And I think you know many of your listeners understand that Biden may well be constricted. We all hope that Georgia Ron Hosko well, but if it if they don't He's gonna have to govern by, you know, executive orders. And will focus heavily on foreign policy, where presidents often have more leeway. And I have to, and I think in the foreign policy arena I don't know if your listeners know you know with the blob means it's sort of an adherence to a Washington consensus and establishment consensus, and I think some of the names we've seen appointments and those being talked about Have been implicated in the foreign policy calamities of the last decades. Iraq, one of the great debacles of our foreign policy of the intervention in Libya. Ongoing ties to Saudi Arabia trade Fomenting of a Russian Cold War that possibly Chinese cold, Cold War with China. They will be returning to quote normalcy, which has to be understood. It's something critical, which is And I know, um your other guests will talk about this. But signing back onto the climate agreement is imperative. Signing back onto the Iran nuclear deal, if what's happened in the Middle East and in Iran hasn't made that much more difficult signing on the new start agreement, which is the last remaining pillar of arms control. Dining on February. 5 is the deadline or else it crumbles. So I think that's really important, understand in the last thing about the foreign policy group Is as you, you know, your listeners know Michelle, Florida I was, um Scheduled to be the first woman defense secretary. But the progressive community has really sort of made a campaign and I think a legitimate one not just about her record. Supporting, you know, failed and tragic military surge in Afghanistan. Intervention in Syria, Libya, Iraq but also very important Bryant. Revolving door aspect of some of these Foreign policy candidates. I mean, these are people who have flown away was on the board of weapons contractor Booz Allen Hamilton and they, you know they transacted. There. Public role for personal Jane. I mean, you know, so I think that's you know, Hard said, but they come from Booz Allen West deck advisers. Tony Blinken. Some comes from the Madeleine Albright firm, which is called Strategic Advisory. So it's opaque. You don't know. So I you know those air to areas where I think the economics are hopeful. I think, obviously climate coming out of this climate Denial Ist administration, but corporate they will speak to that. So I I just worry that on the foreign policy when we need such a fundamental debate, um at this time of fundamental debate About You know, security strategy for the 21st century. We've just know we're living through this pandemic. And if not now, when, When will we understand that we need a redefinition of what security means that focuses on the existential threat. Climate change. Global pandemics nuclear cyber arms race. So I think that Will be something very important to look at. And listeners you get the phones. This segment. If you consider yourself a progressive, how happy or not with the Biden transition and Cabinet picks so far. 646435 70 to 86 46435 70 to 80 Karthik. I'll bring you in on On roughly the same question, But let me play a clip of Biden another clip if he earnestly named checked Elizabeth Warren. In announcing Well, Yeah, the M O for deputy Treasury secretary he named checked with a little more humor someone else in nominating his actual Treasury secretary. We might have to ask. "Earlier Alex when I said about will get to a point where his how charismatic he is will come to play. This is kind of it. So this came from an anonymous source and Snowden actually long has denied this at least once that this ever happened take it for what it is. But the anonymous source said that he began persuading his co-workers to give their login credentials by telling them that they he needed them to do his job. So this allowed him to to gain greater access to the nsa's computer system by getting these passwords and off and that stuff and and like I said, he disputed that he said that he never stole any passwords or tricked anyone into revealing any of their login credentials, but I mean, I kind of feel like some of the documents that he had he wouldn't have access to At just being the you know, whatever infrastructure analyst or whatever but and I mean honestly, the other thing to consider to is that Booz Allen Hamilton jobs is way more access to government files and things like that than than a lot of places do it's not too far off from what's the what's the song? I'll think of the company name in a minute, but it's it's they're pretty high level clearance. So, you know anybody that he would get the logins from the files that he could gain access to would likely be a lot more inflammatory a lot more secret than maybe what he would have gotten that Dell which is just doing computer systems. Not necessarily everything that Booz Allen Hamilton would do Right. Yeah, so so I wondered if it was just somebody was supposed to be keeping track of people getting documents off the server or looking at stuff. They're not supposed to Thursday because he's a sysadmin he's able to open the file without leaving any sort of electronic Trace so that I'm sure is not how it is anymore. But while he was there, that's how it was. So he starts downloading these things to thumb drives and Some drives were strictly prohibited by most staff, but the admins could argue that they needed to repair or corrupted user profile and needed a backup or had some need for it allows, you know didn't have them in his possession which I thought was actually kind of interesting too and the the company I was thinking of just to you know, real time follow up right in the middle of the podcast Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman were the ones I was thinking of a game and Raytheon actually as well though, like companies like that. And then also Booz Allen Hamilton just have this higher-level access and him being a sysadmin. He's going to have the highest level access he could possibly happen because you know when you work in it or as an administrator on a network or on a system like that, you're going to have the ability without being questioned to do things that maybe someone else can't do like carry around a flash drive that you can plug into computers that's you know approved to do that. You know, that's just not going to happen for the average employee of that company. Right? Right. Yeah, absolutely and I thought that was kind of like Really cool. I don't know. It just thought it was cool that he was he was like the only one allowed to have the thumb drive. He would actually remotely get into the NSA server from home which is in a different time zone..

"Seven now, are any of these events, annual events, all of them are a little bit festive events. It's, it's based on a lottery but we always do harvests and so, but Latino music fest is different for us here. So I'm really excited and even the reached survivor challenge. The reach survivor challenge is an annual event. This'll be our sixteenth year. Okay. Having the survivor challenge, and we have a lot of corporations, who come back to defend their title, and, and so they makes it fun. It does. How can local companies or groups participate in the survivor challenge? They can contact us the our website we do have a portion of our website devoted just four survivor Jones. So if corporations, it's not too late to, to sign up a team. But you can go to our website. Also, we have a survivor challenge page, who are some of the corporations, that are participating this year. This, this year, we have Booz Allen Hamilton who they come every single year to defend their, the defend their name. And we've got the wards corner lions, which is a civic group in Norfolk. We've got a QVC QVC's coming again. They're really great supporter of ours. We've got portfolio recovery associates based out of Hampton roads office. They've got two teams coming in this year. And we have a titan America, which is tighten America's a pretty big team. And and you're still accepting team. So you're still accept teams again. They could just visit your website and you have a page into that. Now describe some of the obstacles that competitors can look forward to this year. Well, I don't want to give away all of our Oliver obstacles, you know, and have people research, some of them. All the obstacles are set up to be able to accommodate every every athletic ability. You don't need it. You don't need to be like a triathlon participate survivor challenge. It's really set up for, for everybody, because most of the obstacles are something you have to think about because what we do is we create the obstacles. So that teams have to complete them as a team so that they're more team building activities than they are than they are physical, visiting running, and there is some related, but not very much. But we do have for instance we have one game that I can give away because it's not really strategic. It is. But the game of throws we call it clever. Yeah. So yes, we have the game of throws in. It's a kind of a balloon toss back and forth in K. So that's, that's probably one of our most popular games, because we try to come up with games that will cool. You. Off as you're getting hot lately. That's great. Now the reached survivor challenge again when is it happening is happening this here on June. The twenty ninth and teams start arriving at nine o'clock in the morning. And we usually have lunch in trophy presentation around one and where's the event held? Again, Virginia was leeann, and that's here in Virginia Beach. Yep. Now, if someone is unable to compete, what are other ways people can get involved, well into our challenge? We always need volunteers. We need volunteers to help us run our obstacles, no experience necessary. We'll train onsite. We always need just general hands on people to help us set up the event breakdown, the event and just kind of make sure that the event is a whole is running smoothly..

"Zack here with Dave Epstein. And Brad whites and Brad, we are coming up here on our next break. What else do we need to think about as relates to taxes in retirement? You know, well, this comes to mind here quickly Jen, which is we've just this whole story about taxes because of all the four one ks and IRA's. Right. That you're walking in retirement with. And it makes me think how four one ks by their nature. We're not meant to replace pensions in our country. Just be a supplement to them. Unfortunately, over time they have predominantly replaced pensions. However, let's not leave out all of you who are lucky enough to still have one here in San Diego. Dave, and I and our firm we are San Diego. We are specialists in our community here, so pensions or something that are very unique and very different from one company to the next. We do a lot of work on things like social security, which has universal laws and rules. Right, that we can help can everybody in the country, navigate pensions are really specific from company to company. So when we see one person with a pension from one place, we could give completely different advice to another and it. Means you really need to get a custom analysis of how to choose your pension. Right. If you work at a place here in San Diego that has one and there are a lot to do. Yeah. You just name some of the companies Bradley of all the people we've helped throughout the years. We've done a lot of work with sharp employs in particular you have a very complex plan and pension. Not in a bad way. Right. There are some of you where we've been able to find that taking a lump sum. And in into other options to kind of create a private pension has been wonderful for you. And so we're actually creating a specific white paper, I the which will release soon. So if you work at sharp, please reach out to us, but that's just a sponde- us to do this for a lot of other ally. SDG the a lot of those of you and we know there's been a lot of influx on your pensions at the genie separate come. Then let me name off another Kaiser Kaiser's another big one in UCSD, folks. General atomic, there's another one. Okay. That makes me think of Northrop Grumman around San Diego. Absolutely Raytheon and makes me right. Booz Allen Hamilton Oro Toro, right. You've heard me talk about retiring this year and having worked at FedEx for a long time. And so, folks, AT and T AT and T. These are all plans that we're gradually very familiar with really intimately familiar, yet familiar with and one of the most important choices that you can make in retirement is nailing your pension. Right. And certainly, you know, everything IRA 4._0._1._K too, but folks, I mean you make a wrong decision on a pension. It takes twenty years. Thirty years, forty years to earn whatever that pension is in about an hour to make kit, right, for checking the wrong Bossasso worth at one extra hour, seventy thousand hours you work to get seventy plus thousand hours, folks. Huge gosh. Decisions to be. Made you bake three right decisions. It just makes us stellar retirement. You make three bonehead decisions and you could possibly run out of money. Let's, let's, let's help you make them. That's help you get it, right. And that's the nature of this show retire right with Epsilon white. And if you would like to ensure that you do that I'm going to give you.

"Denis Cosgrove is a principal at Booz Allen Hamilton, and he shares his views on what direction automotive automation is headed with changing. Now is the level of connectedness that's coming into the vehicle and what that enables and at the same time Thomas feature. So we hear a lot about. So there's a future of fool autonomy. But there are significant milestones on the way around Trevor assistance Clinton aboard another autonomous teachers that are important the industry. There's an interesting era that we're going to enter where there's gonna be a mix of vehicles and capabilities on the road, and the drivers are going to have to remind themselves depending on what vehicle there in that. They don't have no blind. Side assistance writer, they don't have lane assist or other items that they might be used to another vehicles. And in a way, that's a an analogy. Also for where the auto industry finds itself technology, and securing that technology is that there's a lot of current capability. There's also legacy systems on the road. And then there's the goals that are in the design early stages of production. Now that that are even more advanced somehow they need to not only present that as a coherent product to customers. But then also figure out the right way to to secure that range of technology that they have responsibility for. Interesting to me that you know, the sort of I guess what I would describe as leading edge vulnerabilities grab headlines people's ability to to shut down a car or remotely control it steering or shifted into a different gear something like that. But I mean beyond that, what do you think are the actual real world concerns that people will have day to day as these vehicles, become more and more automated. I think one of the challenges we've had in the vehicle cybersecurity conversation is that usually starts some late may describing cars being hacked in fridges or spontaneously combusting some other day scenario in reality. And it's a little bit counterintuitive, but the more that the vehicle of all looks less like traditional car, the more that we are passive passengers in increasingly autonomous vehicles, the more the security scenario, and parents look like conventional. Issues. What being by that is, you know, a lot of times think about autonomy coming advancing, and we consider things like spoofing GPS or or road signs. So the sensor misreads them that all kind of make sense when you're thinking about new features. But what else Tommy actually does has you sit in the ical and buy things, right? So payment processing, it keeps a log of where you've been where you're going. You're pattern of life. It may be part of how messaging information sort of lease you, and and and comes into out of the vehicle may have you know, microphones will have microphones in the vehicle that that could potentially be vulnerable. These are more like the normal things that we we worry about payment information privacy concerns inside security, and so Altana me is going to change the landscape in automotive in a way to actually bring it more into the mainstream from a security perspective. That's Denis Cosgrove from Booz Allen Hamilton. So you think it's just the good guys who are working hard to get that notoriously scarce, cyber security talent think again, the skids over at the dark overlord who rose to a certain cheap level of fame by leaking spoilers to orange is the new black went on a recruiting.

"In the news that a state lawmaker here in Texas will try again to raise the minimum wage for some workers talking about Al Paso democrat. Lena Ortega's Bill that would not apply to the whole state, but what allow counties and cities to boost the minimum wage for public employees in their jurisdiction. My Bill would do would be allow local governmental entities to decide whether or not to increase the minimum wage now, Texas does not allow those entities to increase the wage for the private sector or one of twenty states, which have not raised their minimum wage above seven twenty five the federal level. Every community is diverse in terms of the cost of living. So it allows each community locally elected officials to decide what that minimum wage should be our take a first balder build a couple of years ago. She says that she's more hopeful this time around. Because there are more Democrats in the state house, basically, this would be if you wanna do work with the city or county or the government, then you as a contractor you as a, you know, whoever if you respond to an RFP a request for proposals. Then you have to be paying your employees a certain level of money per hour. If you want to do business with the city or the county, of course. I see the need for minimum wage because. To a point where we don't want unfair. Treatment we want everybody to to at least have some way of making a living in there should be some point where it's fair and some point where it's not fair. But what how do we know what the line is there? I mean. What what do they base? These numbers on. And at what point does it just get absurd in? We can't do it. I mean, I think at some point a business owner just needs to have control. And here's what I can pay. And if you don't wanna work here. Good luck to you in the future. Well, a business owner has control here. They have ultimate control. They can decide not to do business with the city or the county. Yeah. That's a simple. This would just be county projects city projects when they go out and hire a company to do a project. They would have to meet these guidelines. Ultimately that business has the ultimate say. Now, we don't want to do business with you. Because this okay jump in here at five one two eight three six zero five at least that's still gives the business and aspect of control. I'd love to get your reaction to this. You know, they apple earnings report this week. It's really sending shockwaves of this. The so-called economic slump in a trade war between the United States and China. Chinese consumers have cut back on buying apples one thousand dollar iphone because well they're on nearby. This economic slump in a in a trade war with the United States. The iphone is Apple's biggest product accounting for about sixty percent of its revenue in July through the September quarter. This according to the latest numbers it stuck fell. Ten percent Thursday. The worst drop in five years wiping out about seventy five billion dollars in market value. Now, apple CEO, Tim cook, he said in a letter to shareholders that demand for iphones is waning and revenue for the first quarter of two thousand eighteen will fall below projections. A decrease he trace mainly to China. Well, Daniel is is with Wedbush securities, and he blames apples pricing model along with supply and demand is the real culprit here in this is probably the darkest chapter for cook. And apple in the modern iphone history. It was a massive miss for the December quarter with China's the key culprit Amine, China revenues century missed by forty fifty percent. This is really a gut punch to the street. Even though expecting soft numbers. This was really even beyond the realm of negative possibilities. Milligan eight percent revenue miss for apple is in the last decade. That's really unheard of. I think it just speaks to how demand for this way. Iphone especially in ten are in China really was met with minimal demand and fundamentally now going forward. It looks about twenty to twenty five million iphones. Wes will be sold from apple. And that's something which is going to have ramifications across tack, including semiconductor chip names. But what's really happening is customers are not upgrading on his this cycle and a wad of its pricing. I mean, apple shot themselves in the foot in our opinion with a phone above the thousand dollars and in China's where really backfired this quarter. And you've seen the damage in the wood idea is Armageddon like numbers. There's a feeling that apple is not gonna cut prices and not going to do the NIA COPA. And that's when they need to do in order to get this back on the right direction stimulate demand, blaming the macro card. It sounds good for press release. But ultimately investors are going to buy into this points. More of a demand and supply issue, but nonetheless. If tariffs and a trade war increased it can only get worse for apple. There you go. That's just some of the reaction from folks on Wall Street about Apple's earnings report. I think a lot of people just have a hard time with the fact that if you're if you have an iphone ten for example, that for a lot of people that might be the most expensive item you have in your house other than maybe your refrigerator, certainly it would be more than what you pay for television behind your home behind your car. It could be the most third most expensive purchase. Yeah. It could be for a lot of people. And I think that's a hard thing to swallow. And I think it's a hard thing certainly a hard thing to justify. I don't mind paying a thousand dollars for a cell phone. If it's going to be a if it's going to be a good cell phone that I could use for four or five years. Yeah. If it's got the latest and greatest and really cool stuff. I don't mind if I could use it for four five years. The problem is be you spend seven hundred bucks eight hundred bucks in a two years. It starts slowing down has all kinds of bogs. You get frustrated and you have to go buy new one that is that is the issue. Yeah. Exactly seven forty earlier this morning. We were talking about some of the greatest video games out. There new report came out about some of the most popular over the past few weeks. And I just mentioned, you know, that the gaming industry here in Austin is big minute amounts to a big number of economic power here in Austin, Texas. Speaking of economic power US economy added three hundred twelve thousand jobs in December blowing past expectations the unemployment rate. Three point nine percent Nora that would be for the month of December. Okay. Mic and Georgetown, good morning. Good morning guys. I wanted to touch a little bit on the video game industry here in Austin in particular in Texas in general, and what it really mean? Yeah, I've been making game since about ninety three I came here to Austin in two thousand and work for an intendo and one of the re and recently in the past two years, I moved over to the defense industry to help run of their studios making ritual reality, and augmented reality one of the reasons that army futures command. Selected Austin to move to over all the other cities was the fact that we've got a few hundred studios full of highly trained experts who can make these advanced games for simulation and training short. They've got a they've got a really trained high high capability workforce because in the defense industry. Most of the stuff that the beauty get is about ten to twelve years out of date, and they wanna make stuff that comparable with what you'd get on the PlayStation or or the Xbox One. That's a good point, Mike. We talk often about the gaming industry and people immediately think in the back of their head some overweight loser who sits on the couch. However, the technology that is produced like NASA producing technology to invent other things the gaming industry. Does the same thing here. Locally yet the very high-skill job. And there are a lot of a lot of these companies are moving here because it's no longer economically viable for them to operate in Seattle or in the bay. Area. It's too expensive to actually pay people to be near. What can what games did you work on? I did Donkey Kong Country returns home, the new one that came out. Metro prime series. I did Duke nukem time to kill other. That's cool. Man. I actually auditioned for one of the football games. One of the John Madden games here. Locally. Yeah. I I was like number two or number three they get chosen. I was going to be the stadium announcer in a couple of games and a lot of chosen you. If it was me, I was literally in a booth for like five hours just saying I intend on the forty two quarter that kind of stuff. Yeah. That's cool. Mike, so so you're now working with the in the defense industry. Yes, sir. I work for Booz Allen Hamilton, we just opened a studio here last year, we do advance virtual reality and augmented reality and advanced technologies for the air force the army and Marine Corps. The navy old news structure now, this this this virtual reality thing is is is because a lot of people have hyped it up over the past few years. But to me on the outside, it feels like it's not quite there for the daily consumer am I right on that. And we started to go through a few hurdles I well for virtual reality. I think it's actually here we've got systems like HD. Five. Are really explore near. And if you come down to my shop, I'd be more than happy. Let's play around with it. I'd love. Yeah. Absolutely. That'd be great. Absolutely. We can take that off line or whatever. But the virtual realities here are better reality spoke about another five or six years ago before how far away are we from the movie ready player one how far away from them? Fifteen years fifteen. You know, what that's not outrageous prediction. I mean just ten years ago twelve years ago before the phone came out. I mean, if you think about over the past ten years, this iphone thing smartphone is really changed our world. Imagine how much more could change ten years from now. One of our partners make habit gloves that you can actually feel raindrops on your hand. And you could also put your hand on a wall. And it'll stop your hand for pushing your wall. Really? That's amazing amazing. It feels like the wild west back. When I first started was before the first PlayStation one came out, and and it was crazy back then in video games. You know, no one knew where it was going to go. Yeah. Or what the money was involved and feels like that for virtual reality and augmented reality to me right now. Like that or craziness that is amazing, Mike, Mike. Let me get you on hold. So that Sean can get more. Go ahead. VR you were saying, well, the technology is there. But as it is the popularity of it what you thought it would be so far. Well, I was a little bit skeptical about the public, you know, about the commercial aspect of it making games because takes the while for a new technology or game developers to understand how to make good game for rain. But for the industry, what's really funny is industry indefens- for actually leading the charge on there. There's a lot more growth virtual reality in business. Right now than there is in the commercial space got because they because those developers those game developers. They need to make money. Now if. And if not enough people have the headset and a really ready to adopt it then. Yeah, it's just not a quick investment. Ryan. Yeah. But you're right. I mean, the military and other training videos things like that accents makes a whole lot of sense, Mike. Let me put you on hold their get get his Email there.
