"Must come to an end. And unfortunately that is what happened on Sunday for your Houston. Texans and in turn our show. Texans. Replay welcome in everybody. I'm your host John Harris football analysts and saw reporter for your Houston Texans and the host of Texas replay. And we've had a great run of Texas replay shows recapping tremendous wins all the way through from the overtime win against Indianapolis from an unforgettable night against the Dallas Cowboys to in-incredibly scary game against buffalo. That was saved by Jonathan Joseph to a dominating performance in Jacksonville. Equally dominating performance against the Miami Dolphins. Then the Denver Broncos by this just the the hair and UTD chin Chen to a scintillating win in Washington. To Monday night dominating on forgettable night. Celebrating the life of Bob McNair and a win over the Tennessee titans to beating Baker Mayfield up in the first half. What a run it was nine wins in a row came to Sunday twenty four twenty one to the Indianapolis Colts. And I think there are a few things to take out of that game. And. Think is the Texans. Just we didn't play well in that game. Kind of the way that we played the first three games. And yet they're down by three with an opportunity in the fourth quarter. Didn't get to stop in the fourth quarter made some mistakes throughout the game not turnover mistakes, but just stakes and didn't play clean game. And Indianapolis played very very well came in new there football lives for twenty eighteen were on the line because they lose that one six and seven chances are getting the playoffs are very slim now seventy six there very much alive considering other seven and six teams that are alive with them. The ravens the dolphins who colts beat the titans. The colts beat. So the colts are right probably where they need to be at this point. But they needed to have that win, and they came in and played with a sense urgency and not said, Texas didn't but just colts day. But on the show, we take a look back. So we always take a look back at the. The game that we just completed and we're going to do that. We're also gonna take a look back at the streak itself. And because we do look back. That's what we're gonna do. We're gonna look back at the streak for a segment, and then we're going to go back to and rewind to the day that deandre Hopkins blew up redesigned, we'll talk about that later, but we gotta start with. We always do our ultimate eleven plays of the most previous game and that being the Annapolis colts. Now, we gotta jump right in. We're not going to not going to belabor. I guess too much on this. Well with wins. We would stretch out a little bit. Celebrate the things that happened but not going to do that as much with the loss. So we're gonna jump right in at number eleven and number eleven is a guy that I think is continued to play very very well the last probably three four weeks maybe more Christian Covington he has really turned his game up a notch and Andrew luck out in a really nice groove. Unfortunately. Early in this game and about mid second quarter. I should say early because the first quarter and half was a struggle. But by the middle second quarter. That's when it really kinda clicked and then the Texans started getting some heat on him in late third quarter. And then he didn't do anything for the fourth quarter. And part of that getting heat on him was Christian Covington cov- came up with this sack on Andrew luck is Cup starts to pile up some numbers playing very very well. Especially on pass rush downs. Here's Christy Covington number with the second. Andrew luck. Third of.

"Um, very thoughtful, very spiritually. Very impressive in so many ways. But could you be where you are today? If you remained as the executive vice president and general manager, the Texas I think the short answer to that is no, Adam, because I'm a functioning a product of all of my experiences. Right? So I'm walking in this thing called my life, and I'm learning and growing each day, and so every experience that happens to me is one that that is Um, motive me and shaking me and and so tip his death was something that motive me and changed me. Right? Um, being with the Houston Texans for 13 years at that motivated shaped me, you know? The time I spent with Bob McNair shaped me and mold me. You know it the way that I looked at a lot of things in the world, you know, so no, I would not be what I am who I am, where I am right now, without everything that's happened in my life. Mm. I want to talk about the football aspect of this. There's so much deep and meaningful information with what you shared their but while you were with the Texans You are draft record was rather stellar. You drafted amongst others, Dwayne Brown, JJ Watt. DeAndre Hopkins Jadeveon Clowney to Shawn Watson. Do you remember about the day trading up for the Shawn Watson to make him your quarterback of the future going from? I think you're a 27 and went to 10 is my memory correct there, Rick? Yeah, Yeah, Close man. It's you know, it's so. So what I remember most about that is that that probably and that's a great said Wait. Question From what? We just talked about Adam because it was the It was, in my opinion, the culmination of my entire time in general manager and what I mean by that is this I am a I believe in process. Right? So I put a process You mentioned all those players. That was really great players that we had a first round draft pacing and we and I think if you look at the the, you know, the entirety of our draft, I had some really good people working with me and we had a good system. We had a good process. And when you have a good process, and you have the people who are operating in that system and process, you give yourself a chance to be successful. I always say that make sure that it all we're trying to do is we're trying to give ourselves a chance to make good decisions on draft day. And if we stay consistent with what these principles are in this process, and we will. We will please do that. We'll give ourselves a chance. And we and we had some success. And then we had some failures. Obviously into Mrs like we like, you know, all of us do, but I do. I am proud of our record proud of the men that we drafted in the team that we put together, but that particular draft so so in that whole idea as the way that I run a draft room, I believe in and consensus building so I never believe in giving coaches Players that they don't believe in all that they don't want. I think we all have to be vested in the decision to add it clear to the football team. I think everybody has to have a voice. And I think when you give people that opportunity, and you give them that voice, and so and then you move and you make decisions based on that. Everybody has to have buying because everybody has had their input to the decision. And so throughout the course of my tenure is GM. I did that. I operated that way. Wait, sweet set the board. We value the vote of the board that way with respect to the way that scouts and coaches saw players and we came to consensus about what that looked like and what that value was, and that's how we drafted and so I think there were there were. There were very few picks in my tenure as GM that they were not exactly where they were valued on the board, and everybody agreed. This particular one was a little different, because, um, I knew that I could sit where we were and get that Sean and I had gone to watch him play multiple times. And I was convinced that he could be you know the franchise quarterback that we needed and so actually spent the day On the phone trying to move up and I couldn't get a deal done. But right before I went down to the draft room, I made a call that shit Jackie Brown in Cleveland, and you know what? I told him. I said, Hey. Um you know, my guys there. I'm gonna come. I'm gonna come up and you know, we talked about compensation, and we agreed What? Itwas wasn't hard. It was just the math work because it was next year's one and so In the draft room when we started, you know, getting close to the pick that I was trying to get to. I pulled the room and I asked, you know who would move up and give up created a scenario and I couldn't get anybody to bite so nobody would do it. And sure enough, you know, Soon thereafter and he comes up to get Patrick Mahoney. And so after that happened, I'd stood up again. I said, Hey, guys, I'm telling you if you got one that you believe can be your guy. You have to go get it. So then I put the scenario out there about the deal that I had on the table. You know, Nobody knows. I've got the deal on the table. But I said Hey, So who would go up Tonto here to give Get him in, and nobody would. I couldn't get any support. And so I sat down and I leaned over to build build. LeBron sits beside me or step aside in the draft, and I said to him, I said, Bill, I really believe in this kid. I said All right, this is what I'm gonna do..

"Studio. So glad to be with you, especially on this show because we're always looking back where we look back at wins. It's that much more special especially on a night when the Texans organization from top to bottom paid homage to the man that founded this organization, Bob McNair, man, what an amazing night, and I don't use the word amazing loosely mazing grace before the game and a tribute to Bob McNair was just unbelievable. My guys Gavin Gert, Kenny. Tom. They all did a great job with the videos in everything on the video board. And it was just such a special special night. It was it was weird in a sense that I could look at the board thinking, I can't believe the big man's gone. I can't believe you know, it was just kind of just still trying to take it all in even though he'd have been able to come to games and be around much this year. It just knowing that he wasn't going to be here anymore was just such a tough a tough thing over the weekend. But everybody in this organization. Tip their cap, in some way, shape or form to Mr. McNair. I mean, it was just unbelievable Monday night and Monday night was just really in all honesty, Monday night was just the decapa and everything. When the when the news came down Friday the way that people in this organization pitched, in some way, shape or form to come up with a plan. How do we how do we feed this, man? How do we give him the proper do? What would he have wanted? I mean, it was just amazing to see people come together. And I'll tell you a little peek behind the curtain on Friday. I got my show all ready to go. I got it all recorded. Everything was ready to go. I got an lasted report and to our show. So putting together a two hour show recording whole thing is is lengthy. I got that showdown. I walked out of the studio, and it was at that moment that I found out that Bob had passed and I knew immediately. I was like, well, we can't run the show we're going we're going live and Martin van Buren. And I came in here for two hours did show. So I've got a show from Friday that will never be aired. And it was all about the titans and getting ready for the titans and all that. And then we did a show that hopefully memorial memorialized him in the proper way at least on radio, but it was throughout the weekend. The articles people wrote the videos people did what community did what PR did? I mean what Amy and Omar and Nathan. An alley. I mean what they all. Did was just incredible. I mean Jonah Stephanie. I mean, they just did such a great job with everything that went on. It was just an incredible incredible evening and on the fortune one because I get to talk about that on the radio because I'm on the radio. You can't see any tears streaming down my face, which is great because I'm sure at some point and all of those discussions, whether it's Friday or Monday or Monday night, whether it was on the air in any way, shape or form, or now just making me think about how everybody came together, which is exactly what Bob McNair wanted. That's exactly what he set out to have here for as an organization was based on family, a work family, faith, flam three. And of course football. And it's the football that we talk about here on the radio, but we wouldn't have done it without Bob McNair. And whether he was the driving force on Monday. I know he was the driving force on Monday, especially when it got to be tend to nothing. He definitely was the driving force for a team looking for eight in a row and in all honesty. I don't think the team looks at that way. The team looks at it has let's be wanted. Oh this week. We'll take care of this sixty minute adventure in front of us and get this thing done, and they certainly did that on Monday night. Against the Tennessee titans. So I noticed to start off your home, you know, stasis might to that replay as on Wednesday. We'll be back on Tuesday for the remainder of the year for as long as the Texans play. And hopefully, I'm doing replay all the way at the February. That would be unbelievable. And I don't I should say unbelievable. It would be fantastic. But the way his team is playing anything. Nothing would shock me at this point nothing, especially the NFL's been this year. You lost three right off the bat. Then you went eight not in NFL history has ever done that ever ever done that in history. I mean, it's just amazing to think about amazing to about this team has done. Now, they can find that consisted stride going forward. They're going to be a tough out from here until February. They're going to be a really really tough out for anybody. But we'll get to that down the road. That's looking ahead. We always look back on replay. And we're going to do that tonight. Looking back at the place of the win over the Tennessee titans. And also back last year's win over the Cleveland Browns. Another statement made as a rookie last year for the Shawn Watson and we'll go through that game. And look back at it later. We got to get through our ultimate eleven plays of the game now, and we're going to start with a guy that I think has unfortunately because the sack numbers aren't higher and the glorified stat numbers aren't higher. I think it's lost. What a good year Whitney mercilus has had came back off the injury last year. And he's been asked to a lot of different things for this organization a ton on and off the field. But all the funeral particular. He's been asked to play as a four three outside linebacker. He's been asked to play as a four three and he's been asked to play three frauds linebacker. He's been asked to play its elaborate. He's been asked to play. All over the field because that's what we can do. We can do all those things. We'll thankfully on Monday night. He was able to get to quarterback gets a team that he has done that against. I remember twenty fifteen list team was two and five and looked like this team was just headed nowhere play the Tennessee titans at home last week before by and whit went nuts. He should had five sacks net game, but they took one away because of a face mask. And I think it'd being fours what he ended up with. It was just outstanding afternoon. We ended up with four on Monday night, but he ended up with one and a half and because of live radio sometimes he got credit for two. So a number eleven we give you both as I put an air quotes both sacks for Whitney mercilus on Monday evening. Here's the first one. I doubt the Texans forty nine. Here's Mario to.

"Of Bob McNair, who of course, was the owner of the Houston Texans, and the owner of stone side stable campaign many horses under that banner for many many years you had a bit of a relationship with him back in the day. Just talk about bad for a minute. Well, Mr. McNair, you know, was just an absolute legend in the game. And he'll Bobby Spalding who was his longtime manager John Asher his racing manager. You know, those guys back when I was consigning and selling horses back before my my time, it it Spencer. They were nice enough to let me sell some horses. Foreign not only Keeneland, but we also sold some forces for them when they were kinda dispersing some of their stuff down in Texas as well. We took some stuff down there to the Texas year. Let sale and got a chance with John Asher to go down and go to Texans game and go down on the field before the game in just you know, Mr. McNair couldn't have been more gracious to us, and my brother-in-law was able to go with the we just had a fantastic time down there. And you know, I hate that. He got out of the racing game. And you know, we sold his farm and shake Mohammad came in and bonded. And then just instant off of a lot of the mating stuff that Bobby in the guys who've done out of the form, you know, they had Breeders Cup success. And you know, I know he wanted to focus, you know, on the Texans, and you know, what a great franchisees done there and exciting times for them. And but Mr. McNair, you know, he'll certainly be missed and in just a guy that gave a lot of his time and money to a lot of causes. Yeah. Well, said Marc toothache or

"Players younger players maybe a future draft pick what do you think about love's relationship with cleveland you can read this several ways one we know that they did inquire the san antonio spurs about the availability of leonard and came away with the impression that they just don't have the assets to trade for a leonard out former finals mvp twenty seven years old so you could say that they tried to shop kevin love in the past perhaps kevin love in combination with the number eight try to get leonard but one that seemed to be an unrealistic possibility they're looking at hold onto kevin love on thursday and they have interesting keeping kevin love on the team next season regardless of whether lebron james decides to come back and put on that cleveland cats uniform once again again kevin thirty years old averages a double double has the ability to play and stretch the defense and someone that if they were to make a trade for another superstar down the line they need that salary cap number twenty four million dollars a year that he's owed next year to make a trade that possible spurs with that the cans with that uncertain future as they head into draft night spurs also have question marks surrounding them they are heading into the draft with their unsettled relationship with collide leonard popovich of course flew to so cal this week to meet face to face something the spurs have been trying to do for a number of weeks finally opt to flight to make it happen are will cain ona make two points first of all with a certain level of success you earn a benefit of the doubt what is it five titles over two decades multiple superstars relying on different star players to win titles at different times throughout your lifetime as a franchise earned some benefit of the doubt if you're asking did the spurs do this to themselves they kawhi no i'm going to trust at the spurs didn't do this to themselves in the same token by the way when i read that in fact the new england patriots did call around about trading rob gronkowski they did make calls to supposed true trusted teams run the league oh who's that the forty niners the titans the texans and how trusted are there by the way it's all getting out but if the new england patriots did entertain trading rob gronkowski guess what i give them the benefit of the doubt you win enough you win enough you get the benefit of the doubt and nobody wins this is going to be shouldn't be controversial but it was at one time this phrase when bob mcnair said you can't have the inmates running asylum he was.

"It's sports radio six ten breaking texans news all that too so we got some fake news regarding the houston texans today and i'm annoyed that this took place because it's so easy right now any story involving texans owner bob mcnair is gonna be polarizing by nature any of them so when sports illustrated puts out a tweet with a quote from their article that was a write up of a piece done by the new york times saying quote bob mcnair on anthem protests you fellas need to ask your compadres fellas stop that other business when you look at that headline what do you think based off everything that i've talked about on this show and honestly everyone said about bob mcnair publicly because it's easy to do it's easy to say that a guy that has put his foot in his mouth a couple of times is an idiot is dumb etc etc etc it is the layup so when you see that and you see that story you have to wonder what's the story actually going to be you click on the link you read the story and you realize oh so this was a clip of a quote the complete quote you fellas need to ask your compadres fellow stopped at other business you already knew about that half the second half let's go out and do something that really produces positive results and we'll help you it's not that bad it's not that bad i mean look he says a lot of dumb stuff very easy to jump down his throat for all those dumb things that he says but that's bs by sports illustrated who was once considered to be the gold standard of sports journalism to put out a headline like that were a clip of a quote the juicy clip of the quote is put out there this came from a confidential owners and players only meeting that clearly never was confidential it's funny because this is different from time line perspective then the meeting in which bob mcnair said we can't let the inmates run the prison which he argues was made referring to leak executives but if you check the time line and the different policies that he had the apology troy vincent who said in the meeting that he had he was taken aback and offended by mcnair labeling players like that.

"To the commissioner and says basically you guys are blackballing this guy he why does he not have a job and you look at all the players that are being signed he's not the greatest quarterback era did take a team the super bowl and so goes through and it talks about the back and forth and the take this the guy that wrote the article is that they're kind of not listening to each other the players are all saying stuff of the owners are saying stuff they're kind of talking by each other but they it seems to be the league trying to maneuver its way they didn't want to be in that presidents crosshairs and they felt like there was millions of americans have voted for donald trump there were going to side with him and not watch the product not go to the games not by memorabilia not by jerseys because of this kneeling issue that habit that that that that did happen to most vocal was houston texans owner bob mcnair and he basically looked at the players here's a quote you fellas need to ask your compadres fellas stopped that other business let's go out and do something that really produces positive results and we'll help you that's a direct quote from the secret tapes and villas in compadres yes you know what i'm impressed by how long son because after this meeting davis chris long chris along the following year he and he won the super bowl back to back years when he was with the philadelphia eagles last year he he donated his entire year salary they different charities every single game check did not take a penny from it and it seemed like he's really walking the walk on do you wanna ride one of my other eighteen year old bikes in the seattle now i'll ride my new bike that's now crash that i have to take back to the bike biking shoes that i have brand new biking and i don't want to wear them i want to wear the eighteen year old shoes that i wore across america has thirty three and they're they're all taped up with furnace tape and those are the shoes that i want to wear you like what you like crazy yeah you.

"Said that bob's comments the inmates running the prison comments that were made in the nfl league owners meeting comments that bob mcnair claims were made about league executives comments that he apologized for with a written statement but then in a interview with the wall street journal that was released last week backtracked on saying he wished he hadn't apologized he said that we can't have the inmates running the prison i think it was because he was emphatically trying to present to the rest of the league owners that they don't want the players to have more power than them which i totally would understand but inmates running the prison certain people i think took the quote in and blew it up into something that it wasn't and we have been talking nonstop about some of the weird things that bob mcnair has said in his tenure with the texans andre said that those comments though when he heard them all those made him skip the ring of honor ceremony that the team had for him in november later that month early on i i wouldn't say i wanna say surprise me but i just didn't i read bit to know that you did so much you know for franchising then him come on and say something like that where was the you can't let the prisoners run the are in matron yeah like at the end of the day you don't make the money you don't run it right you know what i'm saying so if you if you take some people off the street and put him in nobody's coming to watch that so it was it was it was real touchy with me i even thought about not doing the ring ceremony really now you ultimately ended up doing it and i remember being in the halftime booth trying to broadcast it that was an interesting experience because it wasn't exactly a hundred percent sure of what to do the ceremony like that basically i just ended up filibuster against saying things that i remembered about andre johnson until andre was ready to actually do his speech so that we could play it over the texans radio network but these comments you hear them andre doesn't even remember them one hundred percent was he as outraged as dwayne brown clearly not and dwayne brown talked about it in his sit down with aaron foster being shocked also about bob mcnair coming into the texans locker room and saying strange comments.

"I don't understand what's going on here but this doesn't help and stats one of my theories with this and really my first reaction was because this also happened this came out on a day when the ravens gm ozzie newsome in head coach john harbaugh were being questioned in the colin kaepernick collusion grievance bob mcnair already been questioned and i have a feeling that when he was sitting across the table from cabinets lawyer mcnair was put into some tough situations when he heard his own words come back to him this idea that he did apologize this notion that he really wasn't talking about the players he was talking about members of the league office i guarantee you he was asked extensive questions about that when he was questioned under oath and he probably was left regretting that he ever apologized because the apology made it so much less plausible when he tried to say i'm not talking about the players why would you apologize to the players if you weren't talking about the players it just doesn't make sense and none of this makes sense from the standpoint of what the nfl is trying to do which is get past these issues the league office can't be happy with bob mcnair right now what kind of conversations may have happened yesterday after this came out you think roger goodell called bob mcnair and tried to come up with a tactful way to say bob how do i put this what are you doing what are you saying why are you doing this it doesn't help anything it doesn't help the broader effort to promote the shield promote the sport gets fans onboard keep fans on board and that's across the board i mean we try to be respectful of the people who own the teams who are the league and you know you can call the nfl refer to it as the league office but it's thirty two teams and there are thirty two billion billionaires out there who owned these teams except for the packers who were publicly held but you've got people who are rich and powerful influential but there's also without a responsibility not say completely ridiculous things and some of these folks have to be protected from themselves and i.
