"Blanchette admits the scope here is limited. And there's self selection bias if a household is using a planner they're likely pretty savvy in the first place he goes on. So it's hard to tell if the planner is adding as much value as the study suggests I would say, yes. And here's why they didn't get into the nitty gritty of the stuff we've been talking about really the last couple of hours on this program. And that's where the real. Help comes. They didn't get into the behavioral aspects of what individuals do we know from all kinds of studies that the financial advisor if all they did was managed you and your behavior it adds about one and a half percent per year more than their fee to the overall bottom line. So when when you look at it from from this standpoint, the date is fairly clear, you do better when you work with a real financial advisor. So then the question becomes all right? If you go to a robo or one of these subscription services that say you get a real CFP. I probably have hired fifty CFP's in my life and train a thousand or more. I can tell you some of the questions I got from. And by the way, if you're an adviser, I'm not I'm not downing the whole certified or the certification process. I think it's fantastic. I've advised everyone to go through the training and get that certification and all that stuff. But it doesn't end there. It's like being a doctor you can go to medical school, and you can learn how to do brain surgery. You can go to flight school, and you can learn how to fly a plane, but until you got three hundred and eighty passengers sitting beside you and you're up in the air and the turbulence starts in the lightning is going. I want somebody that's been there and done that not once not twice but thousands of times. And that's where the real financial advisor can be of tremendous help. And I would suggest to you. That one. Cannot do the job all by themselves the team that they surround themselves with critically important. So it's not just a CFP. Just because they have the designation doesn't give them the total qualifications. They may not know anything about tax or estate planning or whatever even though they took the course. But if you're not working in tax on estate planning every single day, you're not gonna know what say a CPA nose or a tax attorney knows. So it's simple. If you're a financial adviser, you have them on your team or on your staff, by the way, if you want to know is not as you were saying, it's not enough just to have somebody who's got those designations. If you wanna know what you should be looking for in a financial advisor. We've still got the best practices book available for anybody who wants it free. It's an e book, you can just Email us read it. I don't know thirty minutes twenty minutes. Yeah. You're going to want to read it twice. So double that. Just Email us there Ray Ray at raylucia dot com. I wanna get you a couple of calls if that's all right? Okay. Sure. 'cause I know we get the phone number out. We just don't always take call. So. So I'm going to do this. Okay. Go if I can read this, right? I think the first one up is Dan in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hey, Dan, what's going on? Hey ray. So I just started a new job recently. And. Maximizing my 4._0._1._K, but just trying to get all my money stuff in order. I think I make a little too much to you the Roth IRA which is trying to get some advice on what to do. Question. How much do you make an are you married? I'm not married. I it's a sales job. So it varies. I'd say maybe like one seventy. Yeah. Estimate. Right. And how old are you? Dan. Forty. Yeah. So you've got plenty of time. Are you going with anyone like steady? In other words, you're saying marriage eventually because that will play out on the tax side of it. Sure. Will go ahead. But play it as if I'm going to be a single guy. I hope that comes. But it's not. All right. Well, let's plan. Okay. Well, you're pretty eligible bachelor for starters. How much have you saved up? I mean, everything probably probably close to a million. Wow. You've done. Wow. Fantastic. Now, do you own any like besides your? I'm assuming you own a home, correct? No, I don't own anything. Okay. But you've got a million bucks. So you could if you wanted to. So here's the deal. If you have a million dollars saved up in investments how much you saving each year. Do you have a 4._0._1._K plan? Yeah. I've got a 4._0._1._K. I've probably got like six something in there. All right. And that's all pretax money. What's the other three something doing? I haven't looked I probably have close less than one hundred in a Roth IRA, and then I just got like two hundred sitting in a savings account. Okay. Perfect. So here's the thing with six hundred and some odd thousand dollars, so call it six hundred and fifty thousand bucks, and if you're retired in twenty years, and how much you contributing to the 4._0._1._K. The full amount. So you're putting in nineteen thousand so nineteen thousand bucks in payments with six hundred fifty thousand in present value over the next twenty years, and he got seven percent on your money. You will have the grand sum of three point three million dollars sitting in pretax retirement accounts. So one of the first things I would do is. I would be thinking about maybe splitting my 4._0._1._K contributions between pre-tax and Roth does your company offer a Roth 4._0._1._K. I don't know. I'd have to ask check on. All right. Well, I think that would be important because one of the things you're going to be faced with as a single individual is a much higher tax bracket. Then were you married now, I'm not suggesting you should go out and get married, but if the right person came along you'd at least save taxes now, some would argue also spend way more money who knows are you a pretty conservative investor. You don't mind risk. I don't mind risk. All right. So I'll tell you what I'm running out of time. I'd love to talk with you for a little bit longer. Can you stay on the line, and we can talk during the break. All right. That's dan. Hold on. This is what happens John is so many people like, Dan they've done an excellent job of savings. Forty years old. He's got a million bucks. That's on. Well, he's going to be very very well. So we we need to talk about tax planning with him. We need to talk about diversification. With him. We need to talk about the what if scenarios we did you talk about patients all of that stuff would fit in what Dan wants to do your three point three that you came up with is probably going to be higher than that. Because once he hits h fifty he'll be able to assume he has room, then tribute another six grand random, right? And that nineteen thousand is going to go up every absolute supposedly. All right. We'll take a break come back with your calls and your emails that's next on the Chia show. Hi, it's Jamie, progressive's nobody wants to get ripped off broken into. But nobody wants to pay a lot of money to have their own.

"Priceless. Emails. Of course. We've got a dandy coming up in just a bit Charles is in charge. There's an old ref. But yes, Charles sent us an Email. I was trying to take notes on it because it's a little long. Yeah. I know you can Email us though, raylucia dot com. R E Y L U C, I A dot com. Okay. So with the advent of the robo advisor and a lot of these firms coming out with a subscription model for financial planning. The whole profession is being downgraded to some automated system. You can do all your planning just plug some data in or call somebody. That's on the other line at you know, one of the big brokerage firms, and you can get financial planning, and they will help you with budgeting and stuff like that see to me, that's not real financial planning. Budgeting get out of debt. You know? That's not the real deal. Maybe I'm being a little too highbrow on this. But I don't think so because I think. It's a lot more a lot more sophisticated as Charles our Email or is asking about how to tax manage the portfolio and all this stuff, and I could go on for whole day talking about Charles's situation, which I may do the only problem is I'm going to run out telegram. But I did read this. And I think this is pretty interesting. David Blanchette over at morning star has talked about this in the most recent journal of financial planning he used several years of Federal Reserve Board survey of consumer finances to look at how household financial decision making as opposed to financial outcomes like portfolio returns or retirement, readiness varied depending on four primary sources of information, financial planners. Those like us a financial advisor transactional advisors. I e broker. Or bankers, friends or the internet fascinating stuff. And this is where everybody's getting their information brands or.

Roger Brandon the camera traffic center traffic aboard carols services. Sunrise tours, just normally heavy north county approaching Lindbergh on eastbound to seventy westbound highway seventy a couple of pockets pass the airport after the Rocco just some slow traffic. I'm taking the dealt Steve. I'm also leaving them a dollar which will not be good because like to get a new tooth is vitamin dental insurance. Very expensive. Also, maybe big, dental insurance is like in on this also. So they're taking the teeth. I'm maybe they're like they're like supporting the tooth fairy in her like it seems Sifi, but it's actually like it ends up not being Sifi. It's just that they're like paying this lady. That'd be the tooth fairy and like. Steal grownups teeth because they need the teeth. I, I like Blanchette. I do think like that's a big budget movie. If you're getting Blanchet. I like if we're going prestige, if this isn't a harm movie, if there's like a message, we could maybe get you think we'd get Winslet. Ultimate, could we Kate Winslet to play to fairy. Is it like a serious film is like the origin story, the tooth fairy because I feel no, I don't know. I do think like movie idea. The guy she was looking for anyway, should let precaution just kill that guy should have killed them. This is his one mistake. Yeah. I mean that the one, the one flaw in this plan was leaving Mr. O'Grady on top of the elevator which gets in and he's like no four leaf clover. That's what you need. He hates four leaf clovers, and then he dies. I, yeah, I like I do like the idea. I think. U.S.-China tensions derail Qualcomm deal
"Ten minutes, with a look at Wednesday traffic then at four thirty on, all things. Considered the president of the Iowa pork producers association will discuss the market uncertainty over tariffs in the very first segment of. Today's program again all things considered, starts at, four. Thirty, here, on key weedy FM eighty eight point. Five San Francisco and Katie we I- FM. Eighty nine point three north highlands Sacramento This is marketplace. I'm KAI Ryssdal continuing with at least part of the theme. Of the, program today that there seems episode seems to be. A step back in global trade tensions but some damage has already. Been done we present to you. Now, the American semiconductor giant Qualcomm the company had. Found itself in the crosshairs of the still brewing US China traits bad it's. Forty four billion dollar deal to buy a Dutch chipmaker having been approved by every relevant global regulator except China Beijing had been dragging, its feet for months on this thing and today Qualcomm said the heck with it and. Walked away you've been hearing talk about the non tariff ways China could retaliate qualitative is. The term of art yeah this is one of them from Washington marketplace's Scott Tong explains the Qualcomm cases already a lesson in uncertainty for American businesses if China's involve firms. Never, really know if their plans are going to go through and that makes companies risk averse, says business. Consultant Daniel Rosen at the rhodium group when a firm and, for For that matter all firms get, a irrefutable sense that politics is gonna. Play a huge role it makes them hesitant to make. Investments that they would otherwise make in this trade spat Beijing has vowed, non-tariff quote qualitative. Pushback what's, that mean well slowing up deals and licenses holdups at customs website blocking surprise safety checks it's all happened. Before June Blanchette Crompton group advisors American firms in China it's. Qualitative toolkit, is pretty robust and runs anywhere from shutting down. Your retail stores too much more complicated and costly measures in that. Is thrown a monkey wrench into. Your, incredibly complex supply chains but for China pushing. Too hard is risky it needs foreign investment says Michael Jackson at the Eurasia. Group to him scuttling Qualcomm deal undercut that argument and that's a message that goes out to the business community not just in the, US but in Europe and other markets and hurt hurts Beijing Credibility as a market Claire and a, rules based player. "Yeah very on cape blanchette in particular who first of all she is phenomenal like kate blanchett in this is just like she is great but she for sure has that too cool for school like almost removed from jogging every scene i do what you it's kind of man spreading and everything just sitting there it's like legs idaho's oh yeah total power pose and going over all these plans but it is a good point where it is that excitement for the highest is only really felt by a couple people right right now but it's essentially debbie ocean gets out wants to steal these necklace this necklace stitz kept like fifty feet underground and of course nap by having zoll the two songs having on the neck of an hatheway plays sort of this real annoying actress but does highs takes place at the met gala which is super surveillance and high security and cardiac hires their own security these like great guys and so you know much like the other ocean movie it's like a brand of group of people with their own specific skills you know you've got the jewelry person and you've got the tech person the flight of hand hand person tech person you've got you know helena bonham carter like fag stem person but she's the one she their entry into it as you did her so she's also the the blue katori weird accent i think of the group yeah helena bonham carter that you just the past ten years yeah i mean i get it she is unique that was going to say weird but using bit for playing like a weird designer for the role but then it was like you could just take take that same character and throw her like the eighteen hundred and some other periods you tim burton movie does the same thing but i mean yeah designers are very yeah unique yep fit that but she was also whenever i kind of recruiting her.

"Port of women over the years but it took this moment to take over the carpet and this carpet is known for sort of the fashion and the glamour of all of all of it and they switched it and made it just you know made a political statement about the future of the film business and so you know and something that we felt for the weeks leading up to it of just the conversations around women in the film business but then also to just at the festival they had this event on the carpet they also had a panel discussion and then i attended the caring women in motion awards where petty jenkins was honored and that night was all about women in the film business so these teams carried through the whole event as they should because that's where the conversation is right now in the film business and in order to keep it going they have to china spotlight on all of the good and all of the bad and this is something that is definitely in the bad category just their lack of support for women but then the good was that you have someone like cape blanchette leading the jury who can make this powerful statement about where they're headed ironically i guess those women still will not be allowed on the carpet in flats right so they're they're one step at a time there i guess but you know i mean that that's also something that has carried over from when there were few people tossed from the screenings or maybe asked to change their shoes but it wasn't really something on the ground that you saw happening this year of christians to climb the steps barefoot and and people said oh it was as a protest to the flats but you know i went to six screenings this year and i saw a lot of flack on these maybe i saw a few self.

"In los angeles i'm ali would in for kyra style let's jump in today at the intersection of technology and the tariff dispute the chinese electronics manufacturer z t was on the brink of collapse after the us government punished it last month for breaking american sanctions by selling products in iran and north korea that contained american made parts but in a sudden twitter turnabout president trump now says he's working to save z t e and he seems poised to use the company's position and its reliance on american tech as a bargaining chip in the testy trade talks between the us and china marketplace's aaron schrank tells us how we got here you may not have heard much about z t e but the chinese company is the fourth largest manufacturer of mobile phones sold in the us last week the company said it was ceasing major operations the decision seems to have taken vtc and also beijing completely by surprise in so far it's giving essentially a death sentence to the company blanchette is with international advisory firm the crompton group the reason the commerce department's ban on purchasing us equipment could be seen as a death sentence according to christine mcdaniel at george mason university it indicated that this company was nearly wholly reliant on us technology z t e relies on components from around the world but especially microprocessors from american manufacturers like qualcomm z t has lobbied hard to be able to buy parts from us companies again but james lewis with the center for strategic and international studies says the dispute is likely to have another effect chinese always worried about their dependence on us technology and the case only made them think we're right we've got to accelerate our efforts to escape that dependency lewis says one source of worry for china spying beijing fears us parts in chinese phones could be used for intelligence gathering it goes both ways of course the us has similar fears about chinese technology trump's z t lifeline is seen as leverage when us officials are scheduled to talk with china's top economic aid tomorrow i'm aaron schrank for marketplace earlier today.
