"On your guy. And i'm still pretty young thirty one but if a team wants to mould a guy into really develop a guy that i'm probably not your guy so it just depends on what a team looking for and needs. I suit for them. So it'll be interesting to see who who's interested this offseason. Did you rub some elbows with dan campbell. When you were in new orleans. He's head coach. Now my guy do stay day. V i cal. Poly guy up there to apologize. I mean when. I say my time in new orleans i was almost quarantining would allow us into facility once a week a week to just you know to kick by ourselves and you know there was a snapper there with me so he was He was fun to be with But it just it was such a unique experience. You never really felt like you're part of them. You know one big difference between a professional athlete and just a normal person. Is you know they kind of start. Their career once college ends right. You just start working to whatever industry. You're in kind of work your way up something for most businesses. You can do to sixty seven years old your career. Let's hypothetically say knock on wood. This doesn't happen if you never play in the nfl again. You start going like what's my career now like what what does that. How often does that. Like what am i going to do. Is there something that you're passionate about that. You wanna do one of those that you want to get back into football. What how do you come to grips with going like god. This might just be over. That's the funny thing. Is you mentioned that. You're almost in that reverse your benjamin button. You're in that reverse career stage of life like when you leave college you're supposed to try a bunch of things to figure out what you're good at and what you love to do. When i left college. I was thrown into what i love to do and what i am good at now that you know you're on the other side of your career could be over. You're trying to figure out. What am i good at. What do i want to do so for me. I actually used the whole quarantine time. I was four classes short of my degree. So i went back.

"The totem pole rookie. That's what your job risk. You get drafted. They just released was ryan. Longwell was the kick right and so you know sometimes a late round pick and other positions. You never know if you're gonna make the team. Are you thinking right away on the starting kicker or are you going to camp. I got earn the position. When i felt that i still earn it in our head coach. Leslie frazier at the time. Who is one of my favorite people. Going coach frazier told me when i was a rookie said look we released ryan. Low was excellent digger with an excellent career. He's like we release them. Not because we we thought necessarily straight up better than him we released because we want you to get all the opportunities in camp in. Ota's in preseason games we want you to have as many live reps as possible going into our you know our first opening game and so i always appreciate that and i think that's probably the way by were a special teams go head coach general manager. That's how i would do it for young that i drafted. I'd want him to get as many opportunities as possible. Rather than compete against player be probably not on his level And so for me. I just i always felt like it's still earned the job though because he basically told me you still have to earn you bring up that word rep and i think a lot of people in football say a lot when i say the word you get a rep. Does that for a kicker. Does that mean a kick. Does that mean what does that mean to you. Yes a singular k. Yeah that's how we look at it. You know but a necessarily like a lie alive. Kick eleven on eleven. Or could you ask writing the holder. Yeah to expand on that yes. A rep for us is like alive. Snap holding kick while there's protection and blocking coming at you so in practice you usually do it two to three times a week and you probably get a total of twenty reps..

"Important asset in the quarterback but because of the ability to like. Yeah we pay this guy all this money. We don't want him to be our quarterback anymore. That never happened most of my life. You just wrote out situations. And i think in in basketball and baseball it happens a lot because of the guaranteed money. You just can't cut the guy. I think these teams realizing now listen was bite the bullet financially. It only crippled our salary cap. It doesn't actually impact if i'm an owner the bottom line i'm still making the same amount of money and even if my team is not doing great. I'm still going to crush it. If i'm the steelers are the eagles the eagles this year one. Four five games. They you think. Jeffrey loria where does not make any money more. No you got richer this year. So i think we have to start looking at this differently in realizing these teams are not going to get caught up on dead cap space because the one thing we know for a fact is irrelevant. Is the word cap space because you can change immediately. You can cut guys. You can restructure contracts dead cap space little different. You're not you can't really change that unless you trade a guide even some of that stays on your books. But i think these gm's i definitely think these owners because they're the ones okaying. These transactions realized. Yeah bite the bullet. Let's move on. I don't want this guy on the team anymore. We've already paid him. So and they have the financial wherewithal now and the deep pocket books like you know whatever and i think we're only gonna see more of it and i think it's going to be a new trend in the nfl. Because the more money you have the easier it is to solve your problems. Most of our problems as small business are always financially. Based i can. We afford another employee can afford to expand the office and we afford do for a restaurant. Bring another chef. Can we afford rent the space next to us. It's you're always kind of nitpick it's i someone that does a lot of advertising. I like dealing with the big boys because they don't really worry about little round ears when you do business in my space was small businesses. You know every ten thousand dollars means a lot to. I like ideally want to work with companies. Where money doesn't mean that much. And i obviously it always means something but a rounding error is just relative to how much money you have and i think these teams in the league have shown us they're rounding errors right now or fucking enormous because of the cash that is being generated so carson wentz. The eagles were tired old. He was tired of them. Now we'll see what happens with the colts somewhat. Low risk still pretty risky because their character stuff and he makes a ton of money rothlisberger. I think the steelers go. Listen we gotta move on. And i don't think he's gonna have a trade partner. I think if not on the team next year they're going. They're going to release him. So it just shows these gems now. Which i appreciate aren't.

"Three three two three seven seven six. George mccaskey talked a lot about potentially signing Kareem hunt who right now is not eligible to sign with an NFL team. And if he is reinstated off the Commissioner's exempt list, he then will probably face a lengthy suspension as they investigate what went on that night net Cleveland hotel where he was renting an apartment, and we'll find out the the whole thing. But it appears several teams are interested at least in exploring it, Andy and Lakeview your first anti welcomed. ESPN thousands of Catholic company cap. I don't consider myself a a radio. Caller by you, bring it out of me. I. A few different things. First of all, I think your your comment about what domestic violence counselors say about second chances can be disregarded. I mean, they have to say that the validate their entire profession next. I want to say that this whole idea about second chances. It's just such a tired platitude. That's something. We all just say that. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Of course, he doesn't affect Jabber deserves a second chance. But we just keep saying this. But I don't think that we're really thinking about why that is the case why somebody does deserve a second chance when they do something like this. And Finally, I just want to say with wilpon that is the most ridiculous comment. I've ever heard asking. Asking somebody of any class or or any sort of characteristic identification just somehow represent the opinion of everybody from that class. Just makes no sense to me. I just find it to be incredibly uninformed and unintelligent thing to say appreciate your opinion. Man. Thank you for calling. I'm glad we got you to pick up the phone and call the show. Thanks a lot. Thank you see about three one two three three two three seven seven six. Josh is in Joliet. And he joins us next on ESPN one thousand Josh good morning. Welcome. Good morning, sir. Burstein call longtime listener, thanks. It took me about two or three years to be able to have conversations about to have. But I was a victim of domestic violence or my significant other for quite a few years. And now, I help others who go through that from the male perspective of. I was. Gone through that having done all that. I say that cream deserves a second chance do p goes to the recovery program. And does what he said he's going to do it. You can't let somebody's bad decision determined their entire life and their entire outcome. So going through like you went through you have a unique perspective that many of us cannot speak to do you understand the other side where people say absolutely not he did something I saw it. And he should never ever be in the NFL again. Yes, I believe that from their perspective, and every entitled to their opinion over being through it. I understand from this perspective of it that you have to allow people to be able to recover whether he signed with the bears of the saints or the Cleveland Browns or the raiders have. Maybe he deserves an opportunity to be able to continue his profession. My significant other didn't lose their job. Because of what they did my significant other didn't spend any jail time, but they still were able to continue their professional long because they don't believe it should verify or justify losing your job and never being able to work again did your significant other go through counselling. Yeah. They went through about a year and a half to counselling before we were able to even talk again. So in terms of that counseling because I don't know exactly what it is. I keep hearing that. It's I spoke to someone who said to me, let me just tell you something. It is intense. It is demanding. And if you don't meet what the standards are in that counseling. You're not getting a second chance they won't sign off on it. What does that mean when they go through this type of counseling because a lot of people who are uninformed like me feel like yeah. They'll say, I'm not gonna do it again. But they don't take the steps to make sure they don't do it again. It is it is very intense. I went through it and followed along as the person went through the counseling and saw the classes, and I went to a couple of not with that person. But with so with see what they were going through. And it tends to the good work. They make sure that they understand that. This is not okay. This is not acceptable under any name you to put your hands on another person anger manner. Like that. So in the very very good work. And they're right. If you missed more than two or three classes in that here. I think was the first class second one with the big three months. They don't allow you to come back. They don't let you sign up saying that you're okay to be able to get you on. So if he is willing to do that, then it seems like what you said earlier than he had already started that before the beginning of the season. That's a good process to recovery. It shows that cream is willing to put forth the effort to be able to become a successful citizen. And hopefully in the future is accessible NFL player. Josh thank you for being so honest with us. Thanks again. Thank you have a good one. There you go three one two three three two three seven seven six. So from Josh who was a victim of domestic violence from a significant other who says he should get a second chance. Ryan downers grove doesn't believe he gets a second chance here in Chicago. Hey, Ryan, welcome to the show, buddy. Hey, guys. Good morning. I, you know, I I kinda I think about this two different ways, you know, the weight from I think actually you made a really good point. When he got her all the Chapman, you know, might not if not now, you know, win, but at the same time good, you really say cream on second chance started. When Andy Reid said, if you're lying to me, I'm going to cut you ten months to say. Yeah. You know, what I did do to come clean to do something you wait until a video came out to say. Oh, yeah. I did do more. I'm not saying the guy to deserve a second chance. But you know, you made a big point of saying Ray McDonald has gone Brandon Marshall is gone. We have cleaned up the attitude in this locker room. We have made a difference. You really wanna say, hey, we're going to bring this guy in he's not even gonna play until ten games in. I just I don't know if I would want to mess with that right now, especially when you could either address the guy in the third round, you could sign someone else with no history of doing this. I don't know. I'm not saying the guy deserve a second chance. I guess I'm just playing devil's advocate and saying could be something you could look at that way. Thanks have a good day. All right. Thanks again. Ryan appreciate it have a good weekend. But stay warm. I'll let's go to Danny with some. We don't have breaking news sound or do we just did it can you do about to report? Report is reporting the other kickers in the bears workout this morning are veteran Blair Walsh. Thank you. Austin mcginnis who was in the bears minicamp last year. Thanks, so they've got three that they're working on so far. Correct. And Schefter said they were going to bring sixty seven. There you go. So so the Blair wall stuff from a few weeks ago had a modem of truth to it. Modem? He hasn't signed with them. But he is coming into kick with them. At Blair washed when he was in Minnesota until he missed like a twenty one yarder with a playoff game. Blair Walsh, was considered one of the really good kickers in the league. So who knows he Blair Walston kicking eighteen did he no it's another guy? Last year. I can't we get a kicker that kicked last year. Well, those guys aren't eligible to come in and kick for you. Unless they were caught in the middle of the season. I know somebody that could kick kick last year who Tony Parker. Maybe Cody Parker is the answer. Do you think they have Cody Parker? They're kicking with them. No, no shot. Listen kid. We gave we got nine million dollars. Coming your way, you better be here today. And we got it today for you today. You're going to be kicking bright here with these guys. Tony Parker do today show today. Here's your today show right here. Three one two three three two three seven seven six. It's go back to the phones. And let's go to Albert downtown. Albert, good morning. How are you? My friend. I'm blessed. Good morning. How are you doing? I'm good, man. Yeah. It's it's just unfortunate. We will. We wouldn't even they society where you have these people that team that down the moral high ground, and when you're going through the closet. None of such, you know, and the people that always advocated that you people have issues in the allies. And once to understand is that the background of everyone is different. And everyone people who have not committed a crime right now individual doing it because of something. And what thing we must understand is that this. Twenty years old. He's a kid twenty years old. We and yes, we we added. And this kid is looking at fort through said, okay. We'll be where one violent India, India marriage what point in their lives. But this is an opportunity for him to get it. Right. And here you have people on the more. I think you jealous of in making money period. Let can I define that? This kid has to be books. Right. And given the opportunity again to do good in his craft. It does. It does. Then that's fine. Vilify the kid, you know. Albert, thanks, man. Appreciate your opinion. All right. All right to see. But stay warm three one two three three two three seven seven six c cap. And I have to voice the other side of that is nobody's saying he doesn't deserve a second chance. It's just do you want him playing for the team you root for that's the question here because we all agree. I think that he deserves a second chance. Absolutely. Especially at life. Yeah. No one saying he shouldn't have a second chance at life. That's not even a part of this conversation. But do you as a Chicago Bears fan wants to route four Kareem hunt? Do you want him on your team? Two points. A really perplexing tough. You know, it's the same thing with us and Russell, right. If you're a cubs fan. Do you want Addy Russell act shortstop next year? But let me ask you a question. Do you believe what Kareem hunt it, and you watch the video is worse. The same thing as what Addison Russell dead or when Addison Russell did. So far more horrific where it sounds like everything I've read get I've never talked to his wife, Melissa or ex-wife. It sounds like she was in this nightmare on a regular basis. Where the Kareem hunt was more. Someone tweeted me more of an anger management, perhaps an alcohol management thing horrific as it was. The same. I'll make it easy domestic violence is domestic violence and a story. But there is no saying one is better than the other. Or this is this domestic violence. Oh. Girl, or is it just assault. No. It's domestic violence. That's it. And a story. I don't know if that's accurate. I don't know if that's an accurate statement. I don't know if it's it's right or wrong. Like, I don't think you can say it's accurate or not accurate. It just there is no level, right? Like, there's no like Defcon level that you go through to justify the reaction based on what took place. It just it is what it is. Three one two three three two three seven seven six. "That six thirty stems countdown to tip off. Real quick finish up talking kicking. Johnson Palo Alto and wants to weigh in high. John welcome. Hey, guys, a Tommy John. How you guys doing? Pretty funny story about twenty years ago. I went to Oregon SC dock. We lost on a last second. Field goal is kid. Joshua smith. Missed a thirty seven yard or ended up in Dover in. As time expired at the Coliseum three yards short there with my son. Oldest boy. To kind of bummed about that. But fast forward to sense given. We're driving home up until I got all three boys who stop and go to the bookstore. Cup of green and yellow rubberized football, my wife, and I go let's go out and see if options open. The open. Sure enough the gates there. It's before they redid it. I head out to the field. I okay, boys. This is for the win IT it up from forty some thirty which is forty yard or. Took me ten tries. Tommy got to on the ten point. My boys still talk about it. A long ways. If I tried that today I'd be like sea bass, it'd be rolling around with my hairy. Forget it forget it. So it'd be done. You're absolutely right. It's just one of those things. Like, I got that. Look how close that is that when you get out there. I made the analogy it's like the high dive, the high dive doesn't look very high into your like standing on. I'd I'd be like oh crap that water looks like a long ways away. Same for the goalposts. Absolutely. Share man. Thanks guy. The phone call. Now, he's one hundred percent, right. It's one of those things in sports. There's a number of them where there's certain things you just no you cannot do. Right. You could most of it. There's very few of us who thinks we could get in the box and hit one hundred or quarterback a team. We're like, but for some reason, there are certain things people think that, you know, well with a few more days of practice. I could you know, go for the best kicking is one thing that people think they can do. It's it's not easy. I'm not saying, it's, you know, maybe get in the box and facing one hundred and then the guy with a nasty slider. Maybe it's not that. But it's damn hard in one thing. You can't recreate even if you do go get a rubberized ball and kick it ten times you're in a playoff game with dudes and began the ball was tipped. But there's a tremendous amount of pressure. And then he made the first one they called the time out to ice in which it worked in. So you sit around for another minute like damn if I miss this. That's where I think most people would fail. I think people get. Could practice enough to kick? But we've seen kickers going to just massive Blair Walsh. Like. Walk out there. Most people would as Peter King would say crap their pants. The interesting thing about freezing the kicker is in college. It's easier to do it because you can call multiple timeouts in the NFL. You can't call timeouts back to back or it's personal foul. I didn't even know that role until about ten years ago in Joe Gibbs came back. He didn't know the rule that he's a head coach he should know that ROY I am a fan. And so at the end of the game gives tried to freeze guy twice. It went from fifty three or thirty eight hundred field goal you lose. Oops. Somebody probably have told him into NASCAR to you. Can't do it twice in a row, but like in college if you have all three of them, you can call it call it. And then you may think going gonna call it, and we not going to call it in the NFL. Once you call it. It's over you have is free swing at it. But in. Would I also think they should do in the NFL is it's a five yard penalty. If you take a free swinging after they've called the timeout, everyone does it. Hey, kid kick in. We're good to go just one. He did it he made it. And then he missed the next one. I thought we got this one. Now, I think he would have made the next one to if it was the same as the first one, but. Forty-three three you probably should get it up higher than I'd have to go back and look at it again, though. I mean was it a really good play was a hand up higher. The normal was with a lower kick the normal. I don't know. But. I would I would assume those things are probably about fifty fifty. You know, what you call it in a guy called mischief? I know then he makes the next when you're like dole. What am I doing I should've slept? But I don't know how I would play it. I don't know. Maybe it got good field because they can't possibly have. A. Achieve for that. Can they give numbers like they again? That's gotta be like just luck of the draw. Sometimes you make them. You missed it. Sometimes you miss both of them. Maybe you make both of them. I can't imagine. It's that big of a deal freezing the kicker, but you look like a genius. When you make the first one you missed the second one's like. Ooh, it's been they've got it. Right. It's happened the other way around. Yeah. Missed one. And then he may makes it then lab. What do they do? What did? I do. I grew up. Dang it. So who knows? But I can't imagine. Like, I said don't college. I would call one for sure. But then you'd have to guess whether I'm going to call the next one or not. Can you could you could do that in college NFL again? Once you went to call the first time outs over there already know that you can't call while much. Joe gibbs. You can't call another timeout. This time. Paid off for Mr. Peterson the damn eagles continue flying eagles fly. I actually I actually liked. I don't mind seeing the eagles. I just like the eagles again. But I like seeing Zach do. Oh, yeah. I know. I don't know. But I've met him a doctor a little bit. So do. By the way, I'm looking at Parke's numbers for the regular season. Yeah. Four forty to forty nine yards for the year. He was only sixty nine point two percent. Which is twenty eighth in the league sl good. Any good at all. There were eight kickers who did not miss a field goal forty to forty nine yards. How many of those were indoors? Goals indoors. I'm sorry. You should be held a different standard indoors. There's only one guy Matt Brian didn't it's it was the indoor guy. Randy Bullock, Cincinnati McManus Denver again, he gets a lot.

"You think you got a guy for a while? And then it goes on. Mrs three. Big game. But. Exactly, I guess things. Do. In fact, they've happened to the Minnesota Vikings anybody. Remember, Blair Walsh, wasn't that long ago in a playoff game, actually. Mid stuffed animal genocide, I mean, I guess that's better than committing genocide against your kicker Carlson admitted that he was really nervous. In that final cake the thirty five yarder. And we're human beings. They're human beings. We do not have eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. It doesn't work that way not for most humans, which means when we fail, and then we have to get right back up and do that same thing again. We also have to battle. Those flashbacks we have to battle the nerves. We have to battle that fear that we're going to do the exact same thing. Again. I mean, it takes mental toughness to step up and try again when you fail miserably and to do it so quickly. So I have no doubt that Daniel Carlson was nervous as heck. He said that last one was probably more just confidence after missing twice early. That's frustrating that shorter one. I should never miss like that. See I get a little nervous while I'm on his phone. That Minnesota traded up to get him in the draft in April and actually gave up two draft picks to do that. He was the highest drafted kicker in team history nerd alert. And now he's without a job. You guys may remember KAI forbath? Well, the rookie Daniel Carlson competed with four bat. And then Minnesota released forbath who took over for Blair Walsh. If I'm not mistaken. And you had a rookie and Carlson. First time going through at two weeks in. I'm confident that he will get another shot. Obviously had accomplished enough kicker. The Vikings felt like they should move up and get him. Yes. They definitely do. But here's the good news..

"The more reason why you probably kick should be a pretty make goal i blair walsh is probably not someone that inspires a ton of confidence got tweets coming in the one hundred flowers twitter feed at our adam adlon tweets them honestly we also amid if they went for the field goal of the end behalf walsh would have made kicked takes aren't automatic especially walls if he makes uh because again the first half and misses the game winning kicker the tying kick and the hawks don't win in overtime were saying the same thing like no we're not going back and say man i wish we defected now you could sell me on man you really don't have confidence in your guy keep the offense out there like if you really you're thinking are eight and pete carols explanation after the game kind of hints set this idea but you were looking at visit situation where it wasn't exactly just boomorbust going for a touchdown when you pete carroll on the press conference yep paul teich two two me love over this were custom she has to uh we don't fear anyone brain it was a matter of shops yacht but if you've gone full riverboat gambler and said yeah we were hoping to score a touchdown catch him in a surprise situation we saw.

"It was cold yes there is a little bit of wind blowing but now i wasn't he he kicked in minnesota now there's a lot of wind blowing and you have to understand when you look at you hit the first one fun you'll get a lot of words when it goes latte in the rain was coming down sideways the interesting thing was when when washington was on the field and they had to care nick because the rain squalls would come and go yesterday i could you see the squalls on television do you saw probably not as well as wind that that that is more because i stand out li all elements those with my friend joe yesterday an we were in my friend georgia naushera some season tickets together in the rain was comey down sideways i've never been probably i layered yesterday brought six different layers including a huge rain parka and i wore all of it thinking that i'll be able to shed some off is typically when bodies get in there the stadium warms up vetted happened yesterday and when you looked at the top of a century lincoln you saw the american flag in the twelve th man flag uh the american flag is in the northwest end zone and then the twelve man flag is of the south they were blowing at times in different directions the flags were within the state so so there is a crosswind that was happening in the stadium yesterday that was crazy and that was an example let me let it aims to permanent from threatening is oh blair walsh though in the region white house go we get his kicks walk once in awhile is because he would straight line kick right he would straight line kick in that's why he was such a good kicker in the winner centurylink when you look at what blair does he kind of he blew psat kicked so he his lawn air he kicks at higher it as a result of that it was getting a little crosswinds and it was strewn with a full a my wrong men i mean i'm i'm saying you could miss one on a bad weather day like that when you're going the.

"The game you're referee you you can actually see it was the tax play have any influence on i get if a guy just shanks and down i get it if a a guys coming around the corner to hit the core quarterback you pulling down at it's got to be a penalty i've got a left guard and the quarterback scrambling on the other side and and the guy gets way and it's like little paul atta hold now it's first in twenty it had nothing to do with the play i just go i don't understand you can't teach common sense i like the idea that paul's advocating to allow some holding guy even though it's just like just don't call that play the come also very subjective common sense and i hear you dave one people say use your common sense my all the workshop teacher and eighth grade say nuts the sense that so common what with the which as mr hughes mr here yeah common sense the sense than it so common or i get it laws sometimes when you say it twice people laugh the second time public figures stood mr hughes up at all think really old of digest is a rare south teacher it was the vibe around blair walsh in the locker room daddy well i think the vibe at the players pretty strong i mean they feel for him wish rashid which you wish he'd played better i think if you had a full week the question about what they do at that at kicker do they bring some other guys in here i think is a whole different question if it's a a full regular week he missed three field goals and the weather was tough but he missed an extra point in a field goal attempts in the first seven games and that's too many kicks to miss not just the reality of it so as much as anybody can same pete was hey i was fully expecting.

"Not good and i will say this some guy do have sort of bad outside in kind of slice across a little bit more slice across the ball motion but if they catch it pure it's gonna go win it's just if nick not to pick on blair walsh again but if you don't catch it pierre her like like or you you catch laces all of a sudden you can get things flying the way off track because your motion um isn't as straight up and down um in in so um it it it you can necessarily no but i am starting to see that some kickers do you definitely have a much more i guess clean motion or or at least a motion that is much more straightforward the leg comes straight back and then follows through come up straight and it's a it's a more compact motion whereas some come across the ball and that makes issues happen interesting so at the same time though they you ever think interesting i bet i'm going i'm willing to go along with that i can't i can't have that that seems reasonable to me uh my question for you is basically uh you know obviously soccerstyle kickers are prevalent today but it seems like you know given that you want to be straight ahead you wanna be as you know light up with the goalposts as possible it seems like in a way the oil style straight ahead kicker might it might be easier for them to be accurate fuels lobby so we know based on evidence that simply not the case whatsoever.
