Why do Muslim women wear burkas?
"It is of course generally the case that women were is discussed an judged in a way that what men were is not that discussion and judgment is exponentially more intense. Certainly in the Western world where what? Muslim women were is concerned. To the extent that roughly nine hundred million women of wildly various nationalities cultures beliefs backgrounds at cetera often reduced to one garment. Which almost none of them. Actually wear a corrective now exists in the form of. It's not about the Burka. An Anthology of essays by Muslim women writers activists poets and more including two monocle twenty four contributors some Danny and Yasmin Abdelmajid. It's not about the Burka subtitled Muslim women. On faith feminism sexuality and race is edited by Mariam Con. I spoke to marry him at Midori. House earlier before we get into the contents of it's not about the Burka of let's start with the title of it because intern. Certainly if the way that the you know I don't need to tell you this but in terms of the way that the media discusses Muslim women in particular it has become about the Burka. Why do you think that is why the fascination with this one garment not really worn by that many Muslim women? I think it's many things I if I'm honest. But it's also so so many things being it's easy to use of lead or perpetuate or portray a group of people. If you say everyone is like this one thing everyone does one thing whereas one thing so it's that also we live in a patriarchal society so it's very much this obsession with women or women just in general and their bodies and having power over them and what they can win what they can't wear so very much From all sides within the Muslim community outside of it though I would argue that the Birkat narrative has been built on the outside of within the western sphere And so yeah that's where it comes from and to the reason that is not about the backer is it's not about the back is because back when me and my publisher looked into. It is the most politicized Tom. Or what around Masuma if you type in Muslim women burqas most likely unless it's changed in the last year year and a half and I very much doubt that with our current prime minister continuing tests? Fallas stereotypes I would. It's dillistone such Tom. Even though I can't I can't remember the stops for the UK Whitley but for France which banned the buck When they were in that legislation there was only about two thousand women wearing the buck in the whole sixty million population of the country. So I find that. Really curious that people feel the need to Control and portray missing minute specific way and it's just easier to control a bunch of people if you say everyone's this one traditionally submissive type of way so the idea is presumably then that it's not about. The Burke is a corrective to that. You get several female. Muslim writers to write about being female Muslims. If you want a show and say yes if you want the longer answer we live in a society that is capitalist on. You need to sell a market audience. Something they can recognize on the you know the Shannon's and the the you know Giles's and the Tom's need-we to recognize a narrative that has been built around Muslim women and it's not about the backyard the buck is what they recognize about. Masud women think. Oh this is great. It's going to be exactly what I know completely does the opposite so that very much. I didn't go into it. Thinking this book was not called. It's not about the bucket from inception. actually hated figuring out a title. It was the worst part of the entire process. I can guarantee you that And it was kind of a very bitter bitter part for me because I came to this realization that regardless of whether I wanted to or not I would have to undo a narrative that I played no part in creating So I did it by literally giving them the title and thought well the books not going to give you anything about. Boko the job. How did you go about assembling your roster of contributors very much so Research and People often think it was me and a bunch of Friends. Very much was not This is me literally so really trying to reach out to as many of women as I could from different spaces and spheres age-groups coaches religious practice within the Muslim community And saying Hey. I'm doing this thing. Would you like to be a part of and there wasn't any special person? It was literally just research googling and speaking different seen who they were influenced by as well and so so people like Yasmin Abdelmajid. Everything that happened with her in Australia was a huge thing and I had been following that and I really love the way that she carried herself but she was honest integrity. And then Salma Donnie. And Her TEDTALK mcquay regular voices. On nautical twenty four hours and. They are very powerful with that. Voice is an apologetic. And I knew I wanted that. But then I also didn't want this book to be a collection of known voices or without form. So then you know respectfully not to say the EPA didn't have platforms or even an audience but they weren't as well known Osama and Yasmin. Russell people like Jamila Heckman. Who writes about a struggle with mental health and You know the part that I wish you talked about was how she believed.

"Practical having worked with we we've probably worked with sixty thousand churches in the last thirty years, and we've seen every mistake they can make inside operationally, and operationally, and what happens is they tend to run the church more like the chamber of commerce than than by the bible. And so we tend to go all business guy in the church, who's a smart guys car dealer. There's another business lady in the church, who's a smart lady, and she sells whole life insurance. And they say, oh, everybody borrows money. We're just gonna borrow money. And no one said, oh, I wonder what God says. So do so again, I've looked on your site. And I couldn't find it. You all offer a program for churches to go through. We offer a program to take the congregation through their individual finances. And that's a church wide financial peace university thing it, but we don't have a thing where we say sit down and operationally show, you how to run the church operationally. It would be some combination of financial peace university and entree leadership both of which will tell you don't take your organization into that. Because organizationally you will be strapped, and you will start making decisions based on what the Bank needs rather than based on what God's telling you to do. You can't keep from doing it. The borrower is slave to the lender. And you can't get you. Can't you can't unring that bell one hundred percent of the time. And you're setting the bride of Christ up as a slave to a Bank. And I'm not mad at you. And I'm not saying you're going to hell if you do it, and I'm not saying, you're evil people. If you do it. I'm just saying you cannot find anywhere in scripture. God said borrow money to make my kingdom beggar. Every single mention of debt in the bible is negative. One hundred percent of men there's thousands of twenty five hundred scriptures dealing with money and possessions, every mention of debt, it's not a sin, certainly not a salvation issue. But you just cannot go. Larry Birkat used to say you can't find anywhere says. Okay..

"Welcome to the Dave Ramsey show. Mr. MD, how you doing better than I deserve, sir. What's up in your world? I wanna say God bless you for the work. You do it's been very helpful as you know. Thank you, sir. How can I help? Looking for some guidance some direction currently, I'm a teacher. I'm actually just the chief my national board certification for teaching teach physical education, and I'm thinking, I could help more people. I touched on helping within working with people a little bit on their finances. Very generic when I was doing some health coaching. I became a certified health coach, I don't see that really taken off like I really thought. However, when I think back to the times where I did have clients, and we did talk about some finances. I really enjoyed it. And currently right now with my own personal finances with my wife a real really enjoy really motivated. So I was hoping I could get some direction from you about where am my situation. Do you recommend? I look what I look into doing. What's out there that I should be thinking about doing? That's not going to take a whole lot of time. And it's not gonna take any debt. Are you a member of a local church? I am. Okay. I mean one thing you could do. Just to kind of flesh this out because you're you know, you're a certified health coach. And now, you're a teacher, just passing your boards. And I don't want twenty minutes after you start this to send you off in a full-time direction another direction, it might be that you weren't your towing the water a little bit the way that I ended up doing. This was I got very interested in biblical finance after I went broke and realized that academic training left something to be desired not because of substandard school. But because it was mainstream secular thinking only, which leaves common sense out of the mix. And so I started searching for that and found a guy that was teaching at the time named Larry Birkat who was in the Christian world the precursor to what I do Larry has since passed away. And I actually. Was in my late twenties and went to a training that they had for doing coaching in your church and start and I started doing financial coaching as a ministry in my church, financial counseling as a ministry in my church in my early thirties and that evolved into doing coaching for pay and then later on into a radio show and into this whole thing. But, but you know, in other words, you could start this as a ministry and see if it continues to ring your bell. You have a kind of a drive by from some of your experiences when you were doing the health coaching touching on the money. But if you actually sat with people who are in foreclosure and help them stop that or help them get together in touch their marriage as a ministry in your church, you and get paid anything, obviously. But that would be a good way to find out and not just be jumping horses every twenty minutes and keep your day job. And then determine if you want to move into the financial arena full-time way along those, you know, so what you could do is. We're actually doing a one of our master coach training. Webinars this coming Thursday night, and I can get you signed up for that. And they'll send you the four part video series from Chris HOGAN called hope now, and Chris, and I teach that master training, and it's all online, and so you could take that. And then go over to your local church and asked the pastor if you can do financial coaching there helped him as a ministry do coaching for criminals that are couples and individuals that are struggling financially, and that's a good way to get started in it. If you hold on Kelly pick pickup, and you can she'll get you signed up for the webinar also and get you in touch with the guys over at master coach training, and they'll just help you personally in any way that they can and see if this is something you want to pursue if you're listening out there, and you wanna pursue this. You can just text the word coaching to thirty three seven eighty nine coaching thirty-three Seventy-nine that'll put you into the webinar this Thursday night. Oh Kelly is with us in. Washington DC or Kelly is hi Kelly. How are you? Hey, I'm great, Dave. How are you better than I deserve? What's up? So I I have lost my mind in the last year. I'm normally a very good saver and investor and have done very well for myself. However in the last year, I've accumulated about forty five thousand dollars in credit card debt, I don't have any car payments. My only other debt is properties that I own. Well, this assault uncharacteristic of you. What made you go crazy? Well, I had this dream to build a dog kennel. And I went nuts with the building. And it had a lot of cost overrun. Okay. All right. So you didn't you didn't just go shopping. You actually saw something. And and and you try to you try to good thing the wrong way. Exactly. Okay. Mike. My question is is I've always maxed out my I'm a. I'm a civil servant. Just recently furloughed and got my, you know, got my money back pay. And when it went right back into my -mergency. So I'm wondering with this forty five thousand dollars debt that I've cumulated on credit cards. I figured I could pay it off in about a year and a half. How much do you make a year? I met one hundred and fifty five thousand a year. Why would it take you a year and a half? What can you just do it in one year? Oh, yeah. I really buckled down one fifty five minus forty five leaves one ten to live with real estate that I have and mortgage payments right now, I have three houses have mortgages. And they're all empty. No, one of them is being renovated and and the other one the other two I am in. I had bought a a property that I am renovating that house, and we'll move there. Let's see. Okay. And the other one is being renovated. What? That one is going to be sold. We I got married and we've had a his okay ours. Hours. Expect the renovations will be done probably in about three months, and we'll put it on market. Your household income is one fifty five or urine? Come my income is one fifty five or have right? And your household income is what sixty. Okay. You pay off your forty five thousand dollars in twenty minutes. One hundred and sixty thousand dollars, and you can't figure out a way to pay off forty five grand. I I can. But my question is should I. Not contribute to my should stop everything temporarily temporarily and get this dadgum stupid mess you made cleaned up.

So that's that's the guy you go to for that guy used to watch it at the south point, surprisingly good time. Good setup definitely recommend checking out there. You don't have to get their super early to get a spot. So Dan Mullen at the original d m one he's got a couple, but this one in particular like total players was the rush attempt over under nine and a half. That's gotta be under. I totally agree nine and a half is crayon it out Brady right white. Okay. Michaud Birkat kid Eshelman only gets one may or Patterson. That's five. Yeah. And then we go Goff girly. Anderson. That's what I that's why you have to have throw to other wild cards in there who else is getting the ROY light to you. What they may do a cooks. They generally do a reverse so woods or cooks. That's yeah. I still that's only nine. Yeah. I I like the internet and a half the fake kick. Maybe. Oh, well, but Hecker the punter for the Rams usually throws it. So do the Rams used another running back. We're being completely retarded about not not mentioning. Well, did you throw in Devon there? Maybe that breaks. All right. Actually, I'm gonna go. I'm going to say I'm going to actually just said both quarterbacks will have a rushing attempt each team will run some sort of reverse. Yeah. And the whole back to and the patriots will have four people touch. I could see why you might wanna take the under there. Yeah. And at laid the hook Tom Brady fuck that guy, right? Yeah. There you go. There's some listener questions. I'm sure people want to know national anthem. Ryan do you have a pinion on the national anthem? I I mean, not really what's crazy night. My book even breaks it down for like. Length of time for music star to I note suck over five and a half seconds under five seconds length of time. She sings the word brave, Senate four and a half seconds. We'll she forget a word, no minus seven hundred. That's isn't that. Gladys Knight's not forgetting fucking word. We'll she joined by pianist. Yes. Minus one eighty no. Plus when forty lack up that minus one eighty will any scoring drive take less than the national anthem blue. That's a good question. Right. They national anthem time set at over one minute and forty seconds at mine for forty short under. Oh, wait. Let's find a balanced one here. Okay. One minute and forty nine seconds is minus one ten each way. Okay. So they have all these different. Alternate lines. Got tens crazy. Okay. So we'll say one minute and fifty seconds would scoring drive. Less than that shirt. That's the two minutes you warning. I actually really liked that as a prop how. Right. Because it's basically being someone has to get the ball and score. It's a scoring drive. It doesn't say touchdown drive. Yeah. I mean, yes. Minus one fifteen I could be I wish I would've seen that before. I would've thrown like three hundred grand on that. You did fuck in research. Yeah. But there's you get lost in the ocean of props. Right. And that's why we need the listeners the throws liferafts to figure out how to bet this. Fuck. Yeah. In fact, we should just have a constant stream of of props. All should we have a hashtag? Sure. We'll have some more new sure we'll throw out some more for the pre-game periscope. Okay. Ryan before we give out our final official picks and lacks four this Super Bowl fifty three. Why don't we hear from one last time for this football season? From the original chatter help head himself, Boston capper. Breaking news..

And there's nothing narrow wall charger defenders at a fix up about a yard. You know, you talked about Tom Brady's throwing the ball twenty times. So far today of those twenty targets fifteen of them have gone to Eshelman in James. So you know, what's coming? You know, white worries targeting. Who the primary receivers in right now. The chargers still can't stop him. This is a Los Angeles defense that finished ninth in the NFL total defense eighth in scoring defense. And the patriots are making mincemeat out of it Brady has all time to throw rifles a deep ball nearside incomplete HOGAN, went airborne, Michael Davis. Was there looked like HOGAN may have missed time. The jump just a tad and a flag is down. At the thirty four yard line in the secondary. Usually that's illegal contact or whole thrown holding. Automatic first out. Desmond king there. Nickelback all pro this year. But I end today. He's struggling he's not having a great day. We saw the blown coverage. Earlier led to the touchdown of Philip or set this time they finally looks like they're going to get off the field and you'll get a defensive holding. He's working against that'll man man to man, and he grabbed the right call now this is really lopsided patriots have seventeen first downs. The chargers have won sixteen plays. I out in Los Angeles territory hand off to Michelle. He's got a lane to the right, Michelle. Three twenty five twenty Michelle. Inside the Ted. Heroine James saved the touchdown. But this is a clinic. Forty yard run by Sony. Michelle. Right now. The patriots are doing whatever they want on offense. It's inefficient passing game was led by Tom Brady. And James why? And then the run game you get the rookie out of Georgia Sony, Michelle between the tackles and he's chewing up yards. Rex Burkhead is in first and goal. If you drafted Shawn McCoy talk about looking terrible the Buffalo Bills, look like the worst team in football. Again. It's week one anything can happen. But anytime the Baltimore Ravens are putting up forty plus points on you you are in deep trouble. And if you have McCoy, and you saw what you saw your freaking out, and how about Nathan was it. I don't even know if it's worth looting. His name again is paramount Peterman. Does it matter? I think the last name really just means interception. At this point how the Buffalo Bills decided to start him last week over or last year over tyrod Taylor for that one game was bad enough to be able to go over with him over Josh Allen their first round pick..

"And she dropped out as this young woman. And that was so unusual. She must have felt along the way that it was necessary to get people's attention. Now, the other data points I have are one is that as the book makes clear, one of my sources for the book was Elizabeth's best friend at Stanford, a young woman by the name of Chelsea Birkat and Chelsea says the Elizabeth's voice was nothing like that at Stanford or even after Stanford. And Chelsea herself believes that the the voices fake a family member cooperated as well for the book. And I'm not gonna say this person's name, but that person believes and and professes that he knows for a fact that the voices fake and then there's probably the most conclusive proof is that there's an interview that she gave to the show biotech nation in may of two thousand five. It's an NPR show and I have a recording of it. And at that point she's eighteen months out of Stanford. She's like twenty or twenty one years old. She gives us interview to more gun and she sounds nothing like the Elizabeth homes of later years. She sounds like this, this, this kid almost who's speaking very fast in a much more natural sounding young woman's voice. That's a Cup. Couple of pitches higher, and and you realize listening to that audio recording that she basically at a certain point after that, the sided to create a whole new persona for herself and the end, the changing her voice was part of that new persona fashioned. I always thought when you close your b. round your voice changes in that that could add on the do with it. You're saying nothing to do with that whatsoever. It was for sure a very part of a very contrived attempt to project this, you know, female, Steve Jobs, aura, right? Which which other than the other than the. The black turtleneck. There was just nothing in common whatsoever, but, hey, what are you gonna do that? That's was that was our. Attempt and just just astonishing. So I only have you for a couple more minutes. Let me jump to my favorite questions that I ask all my guests before I do that. I just have to say we covered Tana stuff. Anything you want to bring up. Anything I might have missed think is noteworthy. Funny moment in this saga which is forty. Eight hours after my first story is published in October two thousand fifteen, Elizabeth and sunny lead this all employees meeting. You have that in the book and it's amazing that people just go along with that. Yeah, and I was told that, you know, at least half of the employees in the audience didn't go along with it and couldn't believe that this was actually happening, but then you did have some employees, many employees who did go along with it. And I think it speaks to the culture of hubris. Air again's, you know us versus them were above everything. Even though we haven't really invented anything new and and you know that that's it really speaks to how broken the culture of that company was FU carry. Ru is what by Wani and homes leave them on chanting. And how long does this go on? I told you about it was it was just a couple of times two or three chance, and it had been preceded there had been precedent, three months prior after there, no said, received FDA approval for one of its finger stick test. One turned out the only finger stick tested ever got approval for was tested detect herpes, which is actually a pretty easy test to do because it's just a test that says yes or no the disease. So those tests are much much easier than than most lab tests which are quantitative tests anyways, there. No. Had gotten this approval from the FDA and was very, very proud and sunny had led employees in the cafeteria in a chant which actually have on tape because I have foot 'age of that meeting and he he had the whole company yelling at that point..
