"That's called Biondi. It's an example of Ghana one music, the traditional trance healing music of the Kanawa People of Morocco, Houssam Ganea, whose father was a well known master of gay gnawa music. The younger Ganea has made a couple of records and this one Biondi is an example of the kind of traditional sounds have the call and response vocals. You have those metal castanets. Prior to that we heard the German jazz group called Web Web, collaborating with a Moroccan singer and Gymboree player and on the song called Sandia. That call in response was between a singer. Majid Bacchus and the the saxophone and keyboards and percussion of of the the German Jazz players in Web Web. That comes from their collaborative record called Dance of the Demons Still to come on this edition of new sounds, music from Indonesia and Zimbabwe and then some Western music incorporating those sounds, But when we continue in a moment, we have a piece that brings together The North African sounds that we've just heard the Indonesian sounds. He came to the end of himself kind of light and realized that there was a void. There was something that everything he was chasing after wasn't being filled and So then he received christ and he He picked because he believed that. Roads to success: Indonesias election

"Indonesians votes today in vast election, a mammoth effort in the world's third largest democracy with a hundred eighty seven million voters choosing local regional and national officials including the president. The incumbent president Joko Widodo known as Jacoby held rallies. All over the country. He came to power five years ago, promising reform development and an end to corruption his bid for a second term is something of a referendum on what's been dynamic presidency. His main opponent is former general provoke SU Bianco. The Bill will tends to appeal to more conservative Indonesians. But both candidates have tried to seem in touch with rapidly urbanizing people wanting a better life while also speaking to the conservative wing of the country's Muslim majority. Young people in the capital Jakarta seemed clear about their preference. The program made the unique. Up in a shopping mall who treat who's patisserie who's nineteen. So she's quite happy with the incoming president. He has a program to help the elderly. She says and he goes into the field a reference to his tendency to visit ordinary Indonesians and ask them about their concerns. And breathe will begin to who's thirty-three says jacuzzis opponent, the former general reminds him more of autocratic leaders from Indonesia's repressive past and that he'd be a step backwards. People in Indonesia thing that this presidency has has gone the well guy Scriven reports for the economist from south East Asia, he's been all over Indonesia's many islands asking people about how politics affects their lives Jacoby came into power in two thousand fourteen with his plan to spend over three hundred billion dollars launch building thousands of kilometers of roads, and railways, and it means a lot more to people than just being able to get for me to be more quickly when I was in East Java. I spoke to a restaurant owner who told me that the roads built in his local area had out farmers to get their produce to market much more quickly without the food perishing in in the control heat when I was in kind of West Kalimantan last year spoke to teach and she told me that a road which had been built in the past few years had allowed her pupils to get to town. Acre an intern those university. And so as a result more of a people's will kind of applying to two university. So so so roads mean kind of, you know, all sorts of all sorts of different things to lots of different Indonesians. But let's go off route. If you will what other sort of signature achievements has has Jacoby got to claim he's on the set of policies have been aimed at reducing poverty. So these include things like kind of more scholarships for poor families for two to pay for that children to get into school as well as giving more money to the to the kind of villages, probably the most popular of his anti-poverty measures is a large expansion in in health insurance. And so now almost over two hundred million Indonesians have gone some kind of health insurance cover aunt from about one hundred thirty million in two thousand fourteen right? And with a raft of kind of people. Accomplishments like that he must be he must be doing pretty well in the poll. Absolutely. Yeah. His approval ratings are very high and always have been throws presidency. And in the in the pose he's twenty percentage points on average kind of a head of his opponent. And so with all these achievements behind him is is there anything that sort of dragging Jacoby down anything that worries people about him? Or is it just all happy news? No, it's I mean, it's not all it's not over as combining means people of basically being worried about Chicago. He's attempts to ensure that he gets reelected, and and some of the ways he's gone about that he's being raw the kind of intolerant of dissent. He the police have shut down various kind of opposition movement marches and rallies. They've also rested. Several opposition leaders since January on what looked like quite flimsy charges. So Jacoby his also been strengthening ties with the. Military. He's brought into his innocence cool several Fulmer kind of military generals who were very powerful during the Suharto dictatorship which run from nineteen sixty seven to nineteen ninety eight and was kind of deeply autocratic state where the military held a huge amount of power maskco. He's been kind of cozying up to to these figures on top of this. He's also been trying to shore up his his support base with MS limbs, he's chosen as running mater are hard line of misled cleric who has kind of raw raw, the conservative views, and who is in favor of implementing Islamic law throughout the country, and as what kind of banning homosexual acts and outlawing kind of minority Muslim groups what this means is that lots of people who saw Jacoby as kind of social reformer I've become very disappointed by. By the way, he's proceeded and how does that play out regionally? I mean, a lot of a lot of these tensions maybe present also in sort of, you know, countries in the region how how important this election. More broadly. The election is is very important, more broadly. I mean, partly because Indonesia's you're such a big country. It's got two hundred and sixty five million people. It is in the top ten economies in the world when you take into account purchasing power parity. It's also kind of the biggest missile country in the world. It's it's not a country, which has a very outward-looking all of loud or boisterous foreign policy, but it is important. So people have some calls for concern, but not so much as to to outweigh people's sort of how pleased people are with how Jayco he's done. That's right. That's right. The other the other option in the election of proposal Biondo is is quite a kind of distasteful figure for for various reasons. He's also accused of committing various human rights atrocities in the in the dying days of this Harto era. He would be more economically interventionist, STAN, nationalist, and doesn't really have a kind of set of well-thought-out policies as as Jacoby does. So the the argument can afford your carry despite to the all the negative things that he's been doing has is really that. You know, he is a better choice than pro. And also that his pro poor policies and. It's kind of infrastructure spending really seem to be working. Well, and so voters are are heading to the polls have headed to the polls today how long until we know the outcome. And and what's the what's the feeling been like so Indonesia's a generally excited to those? They've only had democracy really for the last twenty years or so, and they that that that they see it as a very proud to be able to go on cost ballot and a very excited about doing. So the election commission shoot release the kind of initial estimates tomorrow, and and that should give a good sense of on the presidential and hopefully as well how the fun of political parties have done in in the legislative election. Well in the meantime, enjoy the fear of people enjoying their
