"You've seen it in interviews on this network. You know, the other day Bennie Thompson was on was on Chris, Hayes this show. When he was saying that he that. Let's, let's look at that. I talked to a lot of people and to the person everybody said for the you all going to do about President Trump. They a shift in the conversation in my community in my district. The report lays out eleven instances of possible obstruction of Justice by the president of the United States. As I told you this is like coming home for me. So, again, I've heard the same thing talking to people right that they at their town halls for the first time, you know, as much as people wanna ask about prescription drug prices. They wanna say what are you doing to hold this lowest president to account and the other problem? And I think that Nancy Pelosi is moving to address this is that hurled turn it has always been. No, we're going to run these hearings and see where they lead. But until maybe today they haven't really been leaving anywhere because the White House has been so good. It's still mulling them. Are I really think Donald Trump is trying to provoke the Democrats into impeaching him? And Democrats naturally have the reaction will if he wants us to do it, it must be bad for us politically. But I think there are a couple of problems with that assumption. One it, citing the last war. It's assuming that because between backfired in the case of Bill Clinton, that it would backfire in the case of Donald Trump. I think that presumes a lot. We don't know. But I think in a way, the bigger problem is trivial ising impeachment and politicizing it to that extent impeachment is a solemn thing in democracy. It's happened twice in our history. I think there's a strong case for it with Donald Trump. But I don't think Democrats can approach it from the point of view of, how is this going to play in the election? This isn't a filibuster. This isn't the next the next roll call vote. This is this is impeachment..

"More to get to stay with us. We are. Of course, continuing to monitor the breaking news out of Jinya tech where eleven are dead mass shooting six in the hospital. The shooter has lost his life as well. We don't have many detail on the co worker appears to enter the Virginia Beach municipal facility and began firing. Police were there fairly quickly, but eleven people dead six hospitalized tonight in the latest mass shooting here in this country. I'm joined now, chairman of the house homeland security committee, congressman Bennie Thompson, who is a democrat from Mississippi and let me start on this topic. I surf, that's okay. The Democrats have passed two pieces of gun control legislation out of the house with their house majority in the first few months that they had control. What's your reaction watching this unfold in Virginia tonight with I vote is, you know, all of us have a deep sympathy for the families in those individuals impact. But on a moral note the access to gun. The continue easy access to guns is a problem in this country. The fact that people would certain illnesses Milton assist can still get guns background checks not enforced. And so he narrows, and obviously, individuals who, who have Milian is's can get guns. On the other hand, we don't as a country provide the services for those individuals who have this, and that is a challenge for us. And I think something congress is going to have to step forward to an address. There's two piece of legislation not mistaken that come out of the house on background checks, one sort of closing the loopholes the other extending the time in which those background checks processed d think Mitch McConnell, should take those up in the Senate. Well, you know, Mitch McConnell should do a lot on the Senate. We do. I work on a house. But the cost loophole Bill, which would close loophole that occur. They would also help. But again, we need to full it phone mental health in this country. Mitch McConnell has basically say he's not going to do anything. We can't even get disaster. Americans passed in this country. So. Just by I would just note there that the Senate did pass a disaster relief funding problem right now is the Republicans who keep objecting unanimous consent to through in your house. Well, you flew, correct? But they held it up on the Senate longer than normal. Right. We'd normally do I work on the house side? But there's so many legislative initiatives, that die in the Senate that brings me to another initiative in the house that may very well die in the Senate, which has been the topic at the front of mines, I think of a many this week for the House, Democratic caucus and that is the matter of impeachment speaker, Nancy Pelosi on Jimmy Kimmel last night. Once again, articulating her vision of y it doesn't make sense to begin a formal impeachment inquiry. Why it makes sense to go slowly and carefully in, in her mind. You're a member of leadership. You're a chair of a committee, and you have come out believe this week if I'm not mistaken in favor of beginning of formal impeachment inquiry, what, what changed your mind? How'd you get there? Well very easy. I've been in my district over week. I've traveled to about eighteen counties over seven hundred miles. I've talked to a lot of people and to the person everybody said for the you all going to do about President Trump. They not sometime. Call him another name, but clearly, they are disappointed in his leadership. Some of them will even tell me Chris. You know, I don't even want my children grandchildren to what the president on TV and mold. He doesn't fit the standard as Americans that president shoot. So I've heard enough and I up until I came home this weekend. I had resisted. Moving fall what? But, you know, I represent this district and I listened to the people and I heard them congressman I gotta tell you, that is really interesting to me for this reason some of the conventional wisdom, that I think has been communicated, and I think is, is believed by many people in your caucus and leadership is that impeachment is a Esa teric concern, or it's a obsession of people that are political junkies, but not real people living their lives..

"President Trump's recent tweets about freshman democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar's getting a lot of pushback correspondent, Linda Kenyon, has that story began with his speech delivered Bundy congresswoman to the council on American Islamic relations or care in her speech. The Minnesota democrat referred to fellow Muslims losing civil liberties after the nine eleven attacks because quoting here. Some people did something, that's all the speech. She gave. And I saw nothing wrong with congressman Bennie Thompson is the chairman of the house homeland security committee. He tells ABC's this week President Trump took this as an opportunity to attack congresswoman ohm. When he re tweeted a video edited to imply that Omar was being dismissive of the nine eleven attacks. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders saw loud wrong with Omar speech. And I think that it's a good thing that the president is calling her out for those comments. Also, speaking on ABC's this week Sanders said she didn't understand why Democrats were in calling her out to they look the other way where presentative Thompson says the president is going too far. If I look at what the president says on a daily basis, we criticize him almost by the hour. The president's tweet containing that video is being described as an incitement to violence, Sarah Sanders dismisses that assessment, the president is wishing no ill will and certainly not violence towards anyone. But the president is absolutely. And should be calling out the congresswoman for her not only one time, but history of antisemitic comments house voted earlier this session to condemn anti-semitism and a host of other issues after Omar made some comments that were viewed as antisemitic tropes Sanders. Said that vote didn't go far enough. They do these water down pushbacks that frankly, they feel like give them enough cover Thompson SIS. Speaking out is one thing, we're a nation of laws democracy, free speech is here. But Thompson says the president's re tweet of that video viewed more than nine million times is quite another matter, especially if it leads to violence. That's why house speaker Nancy Pelosi. Hold on Trump to take down the video targeting. The congresswoman a video Pelosi described as disrespectful and dangerous. In her statement Pelosi says following the president's tweet, I spoke with the sergeant at arms to ensure that capitol police are conducting a security assessment to safeguard congresswoman, Omar her family and her

"The Trump administration's contention that this amounts to a national emergency. So on Wednesday homeland security secretary Kirsten Neilsen testified before the house homeland security committee and the committee's chairman, Mississippi democratic congressman Bennie Thompson pressed her on family separation and the detention of children, we pudding children in cages as of today shelter, processed at the border facility stations that you've been at some of an obscene, please. I just want you to admit that the. Cages exist, sir. They're not cages would've areas of the border facility dot are carved out for the secrecy and protection of those who remain there while they're being processed. So that was homeland security secretary Kirsten Neilsen testifying before congress. She implored House Democrats to confront what she called a humanitarian catastrophe, Jack, what are you seeing into story, and where it goes from here, and sort of you know, how congress needs to respond to this case that the Trump administration is making. Well, it turns out that the president is right. There is a crisis at the border times documented this this this week. There's an unprecedented surge of migrants from Central America families. They are not however, the kind of invade. It's not a prop is not the problem that we used to have in the past of single men crossing the border looking from often Mexicans looking for work here. No, these people actually want to be arrested and stop they want asylum. Their asylum seekers the president's, you know, nostrum for this is a wall..

U.S. faces 'crisis' at southern border, Nielsen says

"Security secretary Kristen Nielsen says a legal immigration has prompted humanitarian crisis at the southern border in a house hearing yesterday. Nielsen warned that illegal immigration is spiraling out of control. And she said border officials are on track to apprehend nine hundred thousand undocumented immigrants this year alone. And she also defended President Trump's efforts to build that massive border wall. During the hearing Mississippi democrat Bennie Thompson accused Nielsen of evading questions about migrant kids being detained in cages, she replied, we don't use cages for children, California Democrat net. Baragan again said that she has witnessed asylum seekers being turned away from a US port of entry despite Nielsen's claim that the US doesn't do that. Also challenged the Trump administration the democrat in the net. Baragan also charge. The Trump administration. Migrant family separation policy. Nielsen said that there's no such policy. And baragan called that comment. Outrageous. That's when Representative Kathleen rice jumped in and ripped the secretary on Twitter. This is ally lying to congress under oath is a felony the last person who did that is going to prison. So they sparred back and forth yesterday, but pretty clear that the homeland security secretary Kristen Nielsen is firmly behind the president's effort to build that massive border wall.

The president said he would extend temporary protection to recipients of the deferred action for childhood arrivals program or DACA in exchange for the five point seven billion. He wants for his border wall. Democrats want the government reopened before any negotiations on border security issues. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are trying to put some muscle behind the White House pitch. I employ are not rich people. They go to work, but we should pay them. And now we've put them in an untenable position where they're having to stand in line for food. So you're not seeing a short term solution short term extension short term extension. We've offered it leader McConnell wouldn't even bring it up on the Senate side, we will do that. If that brings people back to work, but we have to get out of this Trump shutdown. That's congressman Bennie Thompson democrat of Mississippi. Thank you for speaking with all.

Dems Dismiss Trump's Shutdown-Ending DACA Deal as a 'Non-Starter'

"President Trump's proposed deal on Saturday. Doesn't seem to have made any headway with Democrats. Vice President Mike Pence spoke on Fox News, President Trump did here was he he set the table for a deal. Mississippi democratic congressman Bennie Thompson on ABC's. This week says Democrats objections are more about how the president is characterizing the idea of a physical barrier on the southern border. I don't think Democrats are opposed to any physical barriers is just the president constantly evolves. His description of the wall just as he indicated Mexico's gonna pay for whatever was there. Thompson is on the house homeland security committee.

"So right now they're saying, what are we doing? Why are we following people? Why are we falling southwest flight attendant who's literally working the flight? Because she has suspicious travel patterns because that's her job. And those systems travel patterns are specifically for you mentioned Turkey. Are they? Are there any other countries that are honing that these folks are honing in on that people can be aware if they're traveling from or to these countries that they should perhaps be aware that they might be watched on the guidelines they've been providing via document that we've obtained, and frankly, through the air marshals who are carrying out this program and who've been asking for answers inside the agency. We know that Turkey is one of. The reasons that many have been given for following certain people, but we don't know the others. The vague guidelines, say, if you've been to one or more certain countries for certain amounts of time, and there's so few resources. And so if you keep within the air marshal service the every time they are put on a plane to follow someone just because they have been to Turkey. There pulled off a flight that they were already placed on because it was deemed a higher risk. So this is also a concern in terms of the national security element, which is why we have both sides of the aisle and everyone in between outraged. So our team did reach out to the TSA and the government accountability office for comment the government accountability office then referred us back to the TSA and we've heard nothing from them yet, but did the TSA specifically address anything when you ask them about this program? For the first article prior to publishing our first story on Sunday, which reveal the existence of this rogue room, they wouldn't. Even acknowledge it existed. They generally defended. Well, all of TSA. Since then I spoke again with these spokesman yesterday and they've been a little bit more forthcoming and have given sort of times in dates, but unable to provide any instance where a threat was in any way identified or or even one reason why this program is should be there. And what's interesting particularly in this current climate is that there's been outrage from both sides of the aisle. If there's one by partisan thing, it's that TSA's doing something that sounds completely ridiculous and therefore committees that have oversight over TSA and they have all been demanding answers to questions about this program. Since we first published our story, exposing it. So they've called TSA to the hill and today and tomorrow TSA will be briefing the four committees who have oversight. We did reach out to members of congress on this issue, and we heard from congressman Bennie Thompson. Who's a democrat from Mississippi, and he said he would quote will be doing oversight on this issue. So we'll wait and see what that means. Jonah winter Boston Globe, spotlight, fellow.
