Mayor Lightfoot on how Chicago is handling the coronavirus pandemic
"Have Chicago's mayor Lori Lightfoot on with us to discuss how she in the city are handling the corona virus here in Chicago land so first up mayor thank you for joining us how do you feel the city is handling this stay at home water that we're all going through I think most people are biting tyrant by the time the governor analogy order last Friday which seems like a while ago I think we have done a number of other measures really compared down activities so I hope it wasn't a tremendous jolt to you folks but I know it's different it's different to think about working from home it's different I think about not being able to go out and enjoy all the rich cultural life of the city that makes a difference in people's lives but I think by and large people understand that this is essentially effort being made to the lawn integration that we really slow the spread of the virus is to bend the curve in the right direction so what can we still do in the big question I think a lot of people are confused about how do we know we're violating the stay at home order we don't believe that you're safer homes and want to make sure that people are staying inside as much as possible we also recognize that you need to go out and do things like walk your dog in the grocery store there may be some emergency things that you need to take care of that's real life and we understand that people need to do that but we shouldn't do it with an eye towards not abiding by the stay at home order of our excursions out when your should be limited to really essential functions like grocery store by going to the pharmacy going to seek medical care otherwise you need to stay at home and look most of those are are used to being really busy and on the go and so this is a real adjustment but think about ways in which you can have a normal cadence of activities every day so do you think we're prepared for what might still be to come here in Chicago have we seen the worst of it we have not seen the worst of it yeah we're still on an upward trajectory so it's important for us to really be mindful of that fact the worst is now behind us yet but we're doing a lot of data analysis a lot of modeling to understand what the trajectory of this virus is also that we can continue to build the infrastructure we need for the worst case scenario we have a lot of plans in place which really executing on top it's on blue three main areas health care problems that is health care workers so she's pondered on the road most vulnerable people in our city and building infrastructure to support all those segments in addition to that picky about what we can do to shore up the local economy particularly in the service workers like restaurants hotels and other services are services that we take for granted but really been significantly impacted by the shop please close using shut down but we do have plans to retire in four car thieves all year long so when this **** we started to get back in January we immediately started activating a number of those plans and we've been scaling up all along what do you plan to do for the hospitality industry restaurants hotels that are suffering here in the city all the hospitality workers were the people that we had in our first in our minds when we stood up the Chicago small business resiliency fund and the aim there is to get money quickly in the hands of the small businesses so they can shore up their payroll Dr any cash shortages because we knew that that was critically important so we can avoid mass layoffs that's what we've really been focused on yeah are you getting the cooperation you need from the state and federal government I would say that we have real really seamless call corporation here in Illinois so at the local level county level the state level all we are all children of principle the principle level but also at the staff level in Ben Bailey communications according I think quite well I can't say that we're getting help from the federal government it was very clear to me by mid January following the white houses the version order meaning planes that were coming from China would be diverted to seven major airports o'hare being one of them in my conversations with federal officials on during that time it was really clear to me that they were about organizing we're not prepared and that we could not wait for them to call that's why we stepped up here in Chicago and on absolutely everything that we can to be as prepared as possible

The man. Word says a seafood wholesaler. Definitely not. Ben Bailey in studio cash cab his show. It's this right. Six time. Emmy award winning host we'll three for host and the show. We went for the show three times. So six total. That's good. Pretty pretty good number. Yeah. Don't wanna yell at. Me chris. But got us sixty one six three. Yeah. All right. Unbelievable. Well, everyone loves Joe one of these shows sort of ubiquitous right? It's just everyone has seen it. Everyone knows about. I have no idea what the ratings are just there's a kind of a zeitgeist thing where everyone knows the show. Yeah. It's crept in that way. We had no advertising really ever. That was kind of a fluke that it even got made. And so people just learned about the show by just catching it on the air. And then like enough people. Sawed and talked about it. And then it's kind of almost like a word of mouth. Yeah. To see the game show. Like have you know? And then people just kind of knew it was like one day to the next. Everybody's noticing me. When I went out the exact opposite of Ray Donovan, I was sitting around the bunch of TV guys last couple Sundays ago and someone does anyone watch right now. Everybody here about right out of all them. Yes. Who's watching right on NAMI? I've never seen. No. It's like a show that I've never seen an episode. But it's there and I don't see cash cap commercials. I just see it. It's just there. Yeah. They never they literally never did any advertising for it at all. I watched Ray Donovan until two seasons ago. Oh, well, the lost me. I'm the guy keeping it on the air. It's just it's actually pretty good, man. Jon Voight is places dad. I couldn't tell you. You so good. He's so I hear it's great. But I I don't know if we could make a list of shows where your TV set wanted you to watch it more. I've never been bombarded more with rate Donham. And maybe I dunno gyco insurance or something. What is? What did we wanted more and participated in less, and it's right out of it? Like now, I'm taking a stand. Come on. And I'm going. No. And then I'm in the shower get outta here at TV come on. Like, I said, I didn't feel like you. But cash cab towed the exact opposite. We were like you don't wanna watch this. And we're like, oh, yeah. Well, I hate my stepdad will be just despite you not pushing me also bend doing stand up dates coming up and Saint Louis and LA Hoya the comedy store out there and then Saint Louis combat the funny bone, and you can get tickets.

I love that. Jim. I zone out when I'm in there though, and I put my headphones on because if I listened to the music that they play on horrible. Well, I work out. I would throw myself from the window like I, it's cruel and unusual, man. Let's when I saw you today. They're like, I think that's been. I wanna say something, but you look pretty focused. I was I was in the zone trying to, you know. And if it wasn't you Rattigan I used to be a gym rat. You tell. So when I come out here, I'm like, I'm getting back into the gym rat. I'm gonna hit. I'm gonna go there every day while I'm here. Now. Are you primarily based in New York? Yeah, I I'm out here like maybe ten days a month, something like that. And when you're in New York, I find New York to be a better comedy city. More clubs, more rooms and they're closer together. Yeah, you could walk. Yeah. I mean, the last time I was there for comedy festival. I did like six spots and night. And you get paid for most? Yeah, out here. It's like we fought for that. We formed a coalition years ago fought for the for the pay to go up in the clubs in how do we want. Yeah, no, thank you. Awesome. It was so great. But I mean, that's kind of like what I'm dying up here was the, the plot was basically the comics fighting to get paid more in. Is that happened here at the store? What back in fact, in the seven, these we're talking like the Tom Driessen era. Yeah, you know, when I know Tom is a great. Oh Thomas, like I think my first year in comedy, I was pretty green and to be honest, pretty bad. I mean, I good gun. Oh, he was. I sent him a VHS tape of me bombing in a coffee house. I was horrible gotten doing the worst show on earth. I mean, literally, I think one of the jokes was I'm writing a book on astrology and Liberace. It's called how to find your anus. That's horrible. It's that what he said, no, that's what I'm saying. Okay. I sent on the tape. Watts it and the looks at me as. You haven't done this long. Have you. And it wasn't trying to be a dick? No, he's just keep writing. Keep writing keeping. Yeah, he was like one of the ones who are like to Mitzi and like, hey, we need to get paid and she was like, all the payment is the stage time. And yeah, that's kinda, you know how that whole thing started in the improv kind of like the bloods and the Crips. Is that what it was like a New York, like in New York? It was basically. We just kind of a one day. We were like, man, we're getting. We're working so hard and and clubs are packed and we're not making enough to cover our cat fair to get you know which we have to do because it's the only way to go and you have all these spots lined up, always different clubs. You can't drive nor to park. You can't take public transportation, you're not gonna make it so. It was like, we gotta take cabs and I can hardly can't even pay for my cat fair. Let alone like the end of the night. You haven't made any money very little hobby spent. If you have an if you're going to have a couple of drinks, you know, you end up spending money, but so he formed a coalition and we had two hundred some comics which at that time we were like, oh my God, I had no idea. There were so many aids. In New York. Now there's probably ten thousand people doing comedy in New York or something..

"And it was like, wow, and I guess, you know, when you're at your level and their level. Just fans want the guy on TV. What if that's not you, your stand up. Yeah, it's a weird little gap that I didn't see coming, you know, because you, you just have this clear idea in your head. You're like one day if all goes well, get a TV show and then I'll sell out shows and then I'll get everyone will love me get parts of movies and then then you get it and then you get the first part the show and it's not. It doesn't all fall into place quite like you had hoped that actually gets harder. Yeah, instead of kidding easier. That's the crazy thing is the more successful you get. I've experienced a tenth of what you have it. It's getting harder. You get harder? Yeah. When there's expectation, all of a sudden there's expectation when there was none before. Yeah, even when I'm on Twitter now I'm like, oh, well, been on a few TV shows recently. Maybe I shouldn't tweet this out. Do you have to censor yourself now like not that you are wile man on Twitter, but like you know, like, have you ever like? I'm not really a wild man or like a, I don't say, shocking things or offensive things generally anyway, you know, kind of a more tame person in that in general. So it's not like I'm policing my self, but I've been right where you were with that where I'm like, you know what? This is. This isn't in in reality. This isn't bad or offensive what I'm thinking about posting, but could it be sort of perverted into that? Could someone see at the wrong way or so? Yeah, I, you know, sometimes I don't post something because I'm, I think someone might take it the wrong way or through so many police out there now on Twitter or answer Graham. Whereas. Get the cash, cab guy. Yeah, get him. We can bring him down. Well, I find that people love taking people down who are successful? No, yeah, for sure, you know and they'll look up a tweet. You may air Nance reimposed or it's human nature to some extent like you're that movie phenomenon. Absolutely. Travolta plays guy who just becomes a super genius. Yeah. And there's a great scene where Robert divall. As his characters in the bar and everyone in the town is afraid of Travolta's character and what has happened to him in. And they're all just like talking shit about him and and. Robert Duvall his character. I can't remember the characters name gets really angry with them. I think he plays the sheriff for the mayor or something. And he's like smashes his glass against the wall. He's like, why you gotta tear him down, screams out of why are you gonna tear him down as just such human nature that someone's like, taking off, everybody wants to pull them down and not be left behind. When really, you know, especially in the scenario like that you should be celebrating other people's success. It's like we're all in the same boat should be happy if somebody's succeeding, not not fearful that you're not gonna make it or whatever. You know, I want my friends to succeed one because I like them for my friends and two, they can help. Totally. I mean, it's a little self serving guess, but like you know, that's, but that's a big difference. Some people, especially in comedy, their dream only include to them right there, like I'm going to be this. I'm going to be that and even their friends around them. They don't, you know, either they don't care or they don't imagine or envision that kind of success for their friends because it's about them excelling above the others as an individual, you know. But I was always like, man, if my friends that are comedians are doing better, that's better for me. Yeah, like there's room for everybody clearly. Now it's obvious. There's room for a thousand times as many communities as there were ten years ago or fifteen years ago. Oh my God. I mean, I mean, I'm fifteen years ago specialist like the biggest deal in the world. And now it's now Netflix just announced forty, seven new specials. All people that I haven't heard of which is partially because I keep myself sequestered from a lot of that stuff..

"Read that some good weed, but like most Lancy I think I know who you mean shorter. You know, but he's approaching like he's not an actor. He's there for twelve hours a day. Yeah, that's a good gig. Man. I love being a trainer. Jim all day was hanging is helping people like getting shape and feel good, and it does make you because I did it before I got into comedy, and I'm a certified like I was legit, but I think I had a tipping point moment where I saw trainer must have been in his sixties, and he just looked so sad. Oh. All right. I got it to something else. I don't wanna be this guy. Could have been totally unrelated to his work. Yeah. Maybe he had a bed fight with his wife or whatever. But I was just like I gotta start taking comedy seriously and hockey. Apparently hockey's the only non comedy thing. I do one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven everywhere. I look. There's more hockey trophies in here. Twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen. Sixteen seventeen. Those hockey guests eighteen nineteen twenty twenty one twenty two hockey trophies that I can see at probably another thirty upstairs. I have super hard shot. All those are leading scorer trophies. What What do do you you got got. a an amazing slapshot it's like a rain, man, Goldberg from the Mighty Ducks. Just I'm not the greatest can't handle the puck that well can't skate that well, but I'm like King Kong when I can get a slapshot. Awesome. I mean, still play now. I have to play to every Tuesday out here where you back east. I had to do something on comedy. Really? Yeah. An organized team sport is fucking great for you. Well, it's just it's bond in Yemen. You know, I don't know. Like for me, most of my friends are comics, actors, musicians, and I just have to be around someone who works at WalMart. Doesn't care about an addition. It's got a step away. 'cause it started a business started affected? Yeah. What what's your like. Non non comedy thing that you do you have. I hobby have a lot. I have a. I have a band, I play music. I play my my own original tunes and stuff, but so that's completely separate. I wanna keep them completely separate. I play hockey. I, I used to do triathlon triathlon for years. So voice had tried to have something healthy and completely separate from comedy to to turn to, you know. Oh, comedy business. It'll make you crazy. There's a lot of people that are in it exists only in that world like they just live and eat and breathe comedy. They don't have any any other outlet and that's fine if that works for them, that's fine. But that just doesn't work for me. I can't do that. It's too. Too narrow of perspective. All you see is the comedy business, and all you can like relate to is your hierarchy within that. And like it's just obsessive by nature anyway, and. I've always tried to have at least a good part of my life outside of that world. Yeah. I mean, you have to have some other form of release. This business make you fucking not. Yeah, no doubt about it. You know, and like hockey for whatever reason is an aggressive enough outlet for me too. It's it's all consuming starting to cut you off? No, no, it's it's consumes you enough that you can't think about? I'm never playing hockey in worrying about work thing about comedy. I'm just thinking about hockey. Nothing else. It's like that's part of what I love about it. Is it such a team sport and. Have to be present. Yeah, and I just it's there's a lot of layers to hockey, like there's such a lack on on there. It's a brotherhood bike. Yeah. And that's why even like watching hockey just because it's football, you'll see a quarterback at a late hit, and you might see a line lineman pushed the guy a little bit. But in hockey, if you cheap shot, said the kings on Jaco Petar you got three kings going after that guy like right away..

"Jesus man would keep this podcast light. So you know it's an impression of someone's impression of him. Yeah, it was on SNL ready. I'm Robin. Yeah. Remember who did it to tell you how expensive this rug doorbell combo? Is. Huge fucking out. Lo lives in a house, but slips in hot air balloon. Waterslide remains in the house. It's unbelievable. Great. So what were you auditioning for New York doing stuff like once you start to get comfortable on stage, obviously probably getting recognized for more opportunities are coming your way now. Right for, yeah, yeah. I got offered at Giga headline chance to headline show at some comedy night in Brooklyn, and I was like, this guy doesn't know. I have like eleven minutes. I had to take paid like four hundred bucks with a lot of money to me then. Yeah. Why hacked it up a little bit a shirt and just had to like improv and like always, say, hold some joke jokes. I walked through more or less. Yeah. And we've all done some version of that at some point in your career where someone says, hey, they want they want to give you this part, but can you ice skate? You're like, yeah. Oh, yeah, ice skating now. Yeah. Normally I would have my skates on right now. Surprising economy in a rare moment. Yeah, Tonya Harding's my cousins. So weird. The one day someone asked me about. Absolutely. Like it's like when you're bullshitting a girl. Yeah. Are you into scuba certified. My my goggle mask scuba. Contained under water, breathing out. By the way scuba scuba means you have no clue about. Scuba. She's like underwater scooper. Like scuba the subway sandwich sandwich. Yeah, yeah. So then cash cab comes along at what? What point did you hear about it? And then you try to? I had an audition for it, but I was out here actually. Again, it was nice. I was doing a show in Ramona California in the mountains. That's that's the hotbed of entertainment it is. I've been saying it for years. It's when people dream about. Hollywood and then Ramon. A sign on the hill. Says, Ramona lay says, we were here first. What's so is actually a pretty fun gig at this theater. And then a buddy of mine was playing. He was a drummer in this band called the samples. Okay. They were playing at a bigger venue like four miles away. So anybody that I knew that we knew that we grew up with back east that lived out here came to my show, and then we all went to his show. Okay, surprised him. But so then I had a Red Eye flight back after that because I had an audition for this ridiculous idea, a game show in a taxi. I had to be back in New York the next morning, which I'm sure you read and we now when you read it, do you do you go, fuck ya, that's me. Or do you go? All right. I was like, this is stupid, and this is a stupid idea, bad idea. And then those a ridiculous idea. I think it seemed like a ridiculous idea to most people at that time. Yeah, I know that other people came into the audition and looked at it and said, fuck this and left while other comics that I know. Yeah. Wow. Yeah, but I almost didn't come back because my buddy was like, we got a the band got a house on the beach, and we have it for a week. I just hanging out, but I wasn't partying or drinking at the time. And that's why I said no. Thanks dude, but I'm not gonna come party with you guys. I'm trying to focus up trying to folks. I'm work and everything and I. So I got on the Red Eye and I flew back and I went straight to the audition for cash cab. Wow. What was it like it just like you ever. I don't know what sports you guys are into all of all. I mean, baseball, basketball. You never know when you have a day where everything just works. Yeah. Yeah. And you're like, how the, how is this happening? Yeah, yeah. That's what my first cash cab audition was like even things that went wrong turned into things that went well, like it just it's just fucking us locked in just worked. I don't even know what I did, but the the casting director and the people from the production company were fucking dying. Laughing. Yeah..

"Home video camera when I was like thirteen and I just owned it of making films. Nice, I'll cool. We're making like you're trying to make comedies where you're trying to get funny there before me. There's one where my friends and I when when I was like sixteen, we might my parents were away and we'd like to use my dad's office in an office in the basement. Great. Here's a computer programmer. And so we had always computers all over the place we had a set. Yeah, so it was that was the bridge of the enterprise. We did a Star Trek parody. Beamed down to earth to get beer. We ran out of here. It was really fun. This sounds like a Seth Rogan movie. My dad says he raced it and that I would have been in much more trouble if it didn't make him laugh so much. There you go. He's still has it. Yeah, I go. You erase the have still if you know, I don't believe he did, but it's with him if he did. I mean, yeah, because just because in that's a good, that's a good message to you in in also a good message to comics that are just like, like, what can I get away with anything? As long as you're funny, you know, like you were in your jabs office, which I'm sure to be fifteen. If we weren't even supposed to be in there, we were sitting there on his desk, drinking beer, like dressed, like Star Trek, cast. Turtlenecks with the little. It was pretty good. Are those buddies? 'cause I always feel that everyone it's like essential to have when you're growing up and just doing that type of stuff. Having friends that are like, you know, whether they continue with it or not, but like make you laugh or that you even see in your eyes. They're like funnier than you at that time just to like kind of build some sort of relationship with comedy, right? Are those guys still in it that you would fuck around with and make movies? Those guys are all doing other stuff? Yeah, but they were like I was the mastermind, like just telling them what to do. And they were like, I guess this is more fun than just sitting. Yeah, yeah. Drinking. Our sitting drinking, but we're wearing funny outfits got into it and. Never wanted to pursue. Someone's trying to do is yeah. Someone's trying to do is shattner impression that was me. I was the cat. I was Kirk. Okay. Yeah. And then we had a guy who was who was very Spock like we just like scotch tape. Yeah. Congratulations. You you get Spock. All right. All right. Now we have to tape your. Bag. You're your God forbid, the one that said it'd be a Klingon. What What were were the the move. movies that got you into the business that you said you were big movie guy that I that I like I like I don't man. There's so many that was movies were always my escape..
