Chapter 10 TO EMPLOYERS

"Welcome back my friends to the big book podcast. My name is Howard and I'm an alcoholic sober since January first nineteen, Eighty, eight, one day at a time. In, this the forty sixth episode chapter ten entitled to Employers from the second edition of alcoholics anonymous originally published in nineteen fifty five. There were few changes from the first edition, a word here sentence there. But what stands out most about chapter ten is that unlike previous? It was not written entirely by Bill Wilson. In fact, it was penn by Hank Parkhurst, a friend and business associate of bills who got sober in nineteen, thirty five in the annals obey a history hank played an integral role in the early days of the movement and managed many of the business matters related to a as early growth, as well as the financing publication and promotion of the. Big Book Hank played such a pivotal role in the early days of a a and while the big book was being written that Bill referred to him as his right hand man when it came to chapter ten aimed at large employers who had active alcoholics in their mitts bill acknowledged the limits of his own experience in the corporate world by deferring to hang extensive background in management within Major. Corporations Including Standard Oil of New Jersey where he had sixty six, hundred salesman under him bill realized that hangs ability to speak to businesses and businessmen about alcoholism and recovery would be invaluable to the embracement and support of a by corporate America. It is interesting to note that hangs writing style was so different to bills writing style up to that point in the big book that Bill exercised his editorial authority by largely rewriting hangs original draft to match the uniformity of style and readability the first nine chapters. Bill also provided the opening statement of chapter ten introducing Hank Anonymously of course as the author. And now from the second edition, of alcoholics anonymous. Chapter ten to employers. Among many employers nowadays think of one member who has spent much of his life in the world of big business, he has hired and fired hundreds of men. He knows the alcoholic as the employer sees him. His present views ought to prove exceptionally useful to businessmen everywhere. But let him tell you. I was at one time assistant manager of a corporation department employing sixty, six, hundred men. One day my secretary came in saying that Mr be insisted on speaking with me. I told her to say I was not interested. I had warned him several times that he had but one more chance. Not. Long afterward he had called me from Hartford on two successive days. So drunk, he could hardly speak I told him he was through finally and forever. My secretary returned to say that it was not Mr beyond the phone. It was Mr B's brother and he wished to give me a message. I still expected a plea for clemency, but these words came through the receiver. I just wanted to tell you. Paul. Jumped from a hotel window and Hartford last Saturday. He left us a note saying you're the best boss he ever had and that you were not to blame in any way. Another time as I opened a letter which lay on my desk, a newspaper clipping fell out it was the obituary of one of the best salesman I ever had. After two weeks of drinking, he had placed his Co. on the trigger of a loaded shotgun the barrel was in his mouth. I had discharged him for drinking six weeks before. Still, another experience, a woman's voice came faintly over long distance from Virginia. She wanted to know if her husband's company insurance was still enforce. For days before he had hanged himself in his woodshed. I had been obliged to discharge him for drinking though he was brilliant alert and one of the best organizers I have ever known. Here were three exceptional men lost to this world because I did not understand alcoholism as I do now. What irony I became an alcoholic myself. And but for the intervention of an understanding person, I might have followed in their footsteps. My downfall cost the business community unknown thousands of dollars for it takes real money to train a man for an executive position. This kind of waste goes on unabated. We think the business fabric is shot through with a situation which might be helped by better understanding all around.

SMILE WITH ME, AT ME

"And now the original story smile with me at me at the age of eighteen. I finished high school and during my last year there. My studies were dropping away to be replaced by dancing going out nights and thinking of a good time as most of the boys of my age did. I secured a job with a well-known Telegraph company which lasted about a year due to the I thought I was too clever for seven dollar a week job which did not supply me with enough money for my pleasures such as taking girls out at Cetera. I was not at all satisfied with my small wages now. I was very good violinist at the time and was offered jobs with some well known orchestras but my parents objected to me being a professional musician. Although my last year in high school was mostly spent playing for dances and giving exhibition dances. That most of fraternity affairs now. Naturally I was far from satisfied with my seven dollars a week wages so when I came across a boy neighbor of mine on the subway one night by the way I read in the newspaper that the same boy died four days ago. He told me he was a host in a celebrated restaurant and cabaret and that his salary ran fourteen dollars per week and he made fifty dollars a week in tips. Well think of being paid for dancing with the care free ladies of the afternoon and receiving all that some and me working for only seven dollars per the following day I went straight uptown to Broadway and never did go back to my old job. This was the beginning of a long stretch of high flying as I thought only to find out when I was forty one years old to be very low flying. I worked in this restaurant until I was twenty one. Then we went into the World War. I joined the navy. My enlistment pleased the owner of my cabaret so much that he offered me a good job at the end of my federal service. The day I walked into his establishment with my released from active duty. He said you are my assistant manager from now on. Well this please me as you can imagine and my hat from then on would not fit now. All this time I taste for liquor was constantly growing. Although it was no habit and I had no craving in other words if I had a date and wanted to drink with a girlfriend I would otherwise I would not think of it at all in six months time I found I was too good for this job and a competitive restaurant here or a chain of the best well known nightclubs offered me a better position which I accepted. This nightlife was starting to tell and show it's marks and together with the slump in that sort of business at the time. I decided to apply for a job with a well known ballet. Master who drilled many courses for Broadway shows. I was this man's assistant and I really had to work very hard for the little money. I received sometimes twelve hours or more a day but I got the experience and honor which was just what I was looking for. This was one time when my work interfered with my drinking. This job came to an end one evening when I was drinking quite heavily. A certain prominent actress inquired of Professor X my boss if I would be interested to sign an eighty week contract for a Vaudeville tour. It seems she could use me as a partner in her act now. A very nice woman Miss Jay. Who was office clerk and pianist for the boss overheard the conversation and told both Mr X. and ms see that I would not be interested on hearing this. I went out and drank enough to cause plenty of trouble slapping Miss J and doing an all round drunk act in the studio. This was the end of my high flying. Among the white lights. I was only twenty four years old and I came home to settle down in fact I had to. I was broke both financially and in spirit being a radio operator in the Navy I became in amateur radio. I got a federal license and made a transmitting radio said and would often sit up half the night trying to reach out all over the country broadcasting radio was just in its infancy then so. I began to make small receiving sets for my friends and neighbors. Finally I worked up quite a business and opened a store then two stores with eleven people working for me. Now here's where old barley corn hidden strength. I found that in order to have a paying business. I had to make friends not the kind I was used to but ordinary sane hardworking people in order to do this. I should not drink but I found that I could not stop. I will never forget the first time I realized this every Saturday. My wife and I would go to some tavern. I would take a bottle of wine gin or the like and we would spend an evening dancing drinking et cetera. This was fourteen years ago. I was practically a pioneer in the radio business and that must account for people putting up with me as they did however within three years time. I had lost both stores. I won't say entirely due to my drinking but at least if I had been physically and mentally fit I could have survived and kept a small business going now from this time up to about a year ago. I drifted from one job to another. I pedaled brushes destroyed jobs such as painting and finally got established with a well known. Piano Company as Assistant Service manager then came the big crash of nineteen twenty nine and this particular company abolish their radio department. For two years I worked for one of my old competitors who owned radio store he put up with my drinking until I was in such a physical breakdown that I had to quit all this time. My troubles at home were getting worse. My whole family blamed my failure on the alcoholic question and so the usual arguments would start the instant I came in the house. This naturally made me go out and drink some more. If I had no money I would borrow bag or even steal enough for a bottle. My wife fortunately went to business which was our only salvation. Our little boy was six years old at the time and due to the fact we need someone to care for him. During the day we moved in with my family now the troubled did start because I not only had my wife to face every evening but three of the elders of the family. My wife did everything for me. She possibly could i. She got in touch with a well known psychiatrist and I went faithfully to him for a few months. This particular doctor was such a nervous individual. I thought he had the Saint Vitus dance and I really thought he needs some kind of treatment more than I did. He advised hospitalization from three months to a year. Well this was all out of order far as I was concerned in the first place I had an idea that my wife wanted to put me away in a state institution where maybe I would be stuck for the rest of my life in the second place I wanted to go if anywhere to a private institution and that was far beyond our financial means in the third place. I knew that that would be no cure because I reason that it would be like taking candy. Out of a young child's reach the instant I would come out a free man. I would go right back to old elke again in this one thing. I found out later. I was perfectly bright. What I thought and wanted at the time was not to want to want to take a drink. This phrase is a very important link in my story. I knew this could only be done by myself. But how could I complex it? Well this was the main question. The point was always that when I did drink I wanted all the time. Not to and that alone wasn't enough. At the time I felt like drink I did not want to take it at all but I had to. It seemed so if you can grasp what I mean I wished I would not want that drink. Am I not or do you get me to get back to the doctor? If anything these visits made me worse and worst of all. Everyone told me I wanted to drink. And that was all there was to that after going to his many as six or eight other doctors some of my own friends advised my wife to make plans for the future as I was a hopeless case had no backbone no willpower and would end up in the gutter well here. I was a man with much ability of violinist radio engineer. A ballet master and at this point took up hairdressing so that added one more to the list. Can you beat it? I knew there must be some way out of all this mass. Everyone told me to stop my drinking but none could tell me how until I met a friend and believe me. He turned out to be a true friend. Something I never had until this past year. One morning after one of my escapades. My wife informed me I was to go with her to a public hospital or she would pack up and leave with our boy.

Spencer Murray Jumps Into The Podcast

"All Right Folks. Thank you and welcome back to the draws cast. I'm very excited to be with you again. I hope that you've been continuing to listen to the draws cast. We have some great interviews that we've downloaded over the last couple of weeks and have another great interview Here today with me He is the GM at the Briar Woods Country Club and a city just outside of Buffalo New York called Hamburg and his name is Spencer. Murray and Spencer and I know each other through some work that we've done together through the National Restaurant Association and we've been working on getting Spencer on the show for quite some time so Spencer Murray. Welcome to the Dr Cast. Hey thanks for having me Jeff. It's good to finally make this happened with you. I'm looking forward to to get into it with you yet. It's going to be great A previous podcast. I had a gentleman by the name of Aaron. Primo on and I called him a Whiz Kid. Because he's done quite a bit. In his years that he's been a Professional Anaconda put you into that group Not so much because your age because frankly I don't know how much or how old you are. You don't need to tell me that but I think that you've done a lot for the number of years that you've been making a living for yourself. So that's another reason why I wanted to have yon of the draws cast so So before we get your professional cry like to kind of set it up and find out a little bit of background about the people that are interview so Where did you grow up. What city specific did you grow up in? Sure so starting I'll tell you I'm thirty one so that we can get that out. Okay well then. You can be a whiz kid concerning. Yeah Yeah for me. That's a whiz kid. And I look sick. Buffalo New York in just the suburbs village called Williamsville. Just fifteen minutes outside of the city. You know. My my dad was a military guy. He was in the eighty second airborne and a he was a Jag officer as well too. So a military lawyer And my brother sister or at Fort Bragg North Carolina and then my dad moved up to buffalo to start his own private practice as an attorney so I was born here in Buffalo born and raised here and Most of my career. I spent seven years at a at a breakfast restaurant here. Most people are aware of if you've ever heard of the original Pancake House. Yeah I spent seven years as a kid started when I was first job. I worked at a P. It's a place I was fourteen years old. I made five bucks cash under the table and I they let me run the police that it was just kind of just got it at an extremely young age and learned how to deal with people then started as a dishwasher at original pancake. How listen and then throughout college and somebody's work. I Work Sides Washer. We'd orange juice plus boy creative people as host and just went through all. That was kind of my start hospitality and stuff but I love this area. I'm a diehard bills. Fan Bills Mafia. We're we're out here representing and I've lived away a couple of different places and now back. So you're part now is did you say it was the Buffalo Mafia or the bills Mafia bills? Yeah I had heard that term before. That's pretty interesting So that was going to be a question of mine if you were an a sports fan for the sports that are in the buffalo area but it sounds like it a yeah. I usually if you're from Buffalo. You're you're a big bills and the sabres kind of life around here whether we're good or bad and you say bad but we're good fans and we have a lot of fun so having been to buffalo a few times myself For those of you out there who are listening that have never been to Buffalo Niagara Falls is what would you say about twenty minutes? North of Buffalo. Was that about right? Yeah so Niagara Falls is right there. But Buffalo's got a really cool young vibe to it Especially as you get down into the city. Downtown so If they've had a really good kind of revitalization of the city over the last five six years and it's really taken this kind of artistic beautiful and just driven approach to making the city. Great you know the the food culture here is amazing. The People here are great. It's called the city good neighbors and and I love it. Here this is this is certainly western. New York is is my home and a Lotta. Yeah and it's very different Then you know people when they think of New York they think of New York City. When people think of Michigan they think of Detroit but there's so much more to the states of New York and Michigan than people realize because they just focus on that one area buffalo in western New York people. Are you say you must go to New York City all the time like seven and a half hours away from here? I can make it to Chicago in almost the same amount of time per se and I can be in West Virginian. Yeah exactly so. It's very different but I encourage. I don't work for the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce but and I'm getting no money from them for this interview but I can't tell you that it's a good place to visit if you're looking for places to go The summer or even in the wintertime. Because you you work at a country club but it also acts as a ski resort to my correct about that though so where I live. I live in a town about an hour. South of Buffalo called Eligibility York and it is awesome magical Kurowski town and there's two ski resorts that are so why I snowboard side. Love the winters play. Before this I worked I managed a restaurant in ski jump on so my busy season was winter and now the golf course. That's kind of flipped the script you know so I enjoy winter a little bit more so now but definitely work a little bit harder in the summertime now but no but we're connected I mean like I said I live in his ski town which is awesome. Actually New York has the most ski resorts I think out of any state country number wise. And it's great out here okay. That's great so now you are the GM of the Brier Country Club and we've established that you've worked at the International not the International House pancakes but the original house of pancakes. And that's kind of. Yeah and that's how you got started In your professional life How is it that you went from early management? Even though you shouldn't have been managing that original house of pancakes how did you get from there to the GM of the brier would country club? I can give you a little outline and just kinda how it went so Actually have a history degree. I played Lacrosse in college. I got a scholarship to pull les division to Ross at Franklin Pierce University I was always a history nerd. Grownups and I didn't really know what I wanted to do So my my major. I just decided to take history. I liked it. I played the cross. I thought I'd be the cool history teacher and coach at the school Had that kind of plan out but then I realized that time I kind of liked history. More a hobby rather than something. I wanted to do every day but at that point. I kind of knew I just wanted to do something involving hospitality. Entertainment an Kind of a not a shy guy and I went to small school for comparison. It just know in working in those kind of environments that the original packing house and stuff you just. I just learned how to deal with people but you had to these environments. So that's why I wanted to do so. I graduated. College became a food supervisory Internet. Six flags theme park in Springfield Massachusetts. I were a looney tunes tie and Khaki Pants and a short sleeve blue button down so you have yourself a six flags they mess and those kinds of things and I did that for a summer that I moved back home and I became assistant manager at the ritual. Pancake House at this place. You know the way you come in. It is the busiest Brecca's place all the area and it was one host which was myself still wore Khakis at that time. Couldn't get away from it. I guess And Green Pole and and everybody came in their name on a dry erase for it and that was the wait list for the thing and everybody just stare at you and here. I am this young kid and deal with all these adults different people and everybody's hungry after church. The breakfast in Hama just taught me a great deal of patients and just kind of savviness of just kind of dealing with people of all different ages and expectations

How I Built This

Panera Bread/Au Bon Pain: Ron Shaich (2018)

"Ron Shake isn't a household name like you say Howard Schultz but you could argue that. What Howard Schultz did for coughing Ron shake did for cheddar broccoli soup or the SEO cheese he's Bagel because like Howard? Ron Wasn't just focused on product. He was interested in creating a space of place where people could hang out for a long time. Maybe even have a PTA meeting or social gathering and really linger over that Bagel or cup soup. This is the famous third-place concept concept that both Howard Schultz and Ron shake wanted to tap into in. That's how Panera became one of the fastest growing restaurant chains in the world. In fact if you've invested the seven thousand dollars in Pinera stock in nineteen ninety nine. You'd be sitting on more than half a million dollars by two two thousand seventeen now. The thing is if you met Ron shake say in high school. This is not the path you've predicted for him. Ron Wasn't even interested in business. Is Passion was politics. His parents were raging liberals and Ron grew up going to rallies and volunteering on campaigns. All over New Jersey eventually went to Clark University where naturally he majored in politics and he was quickly elected to student government. And that could have been Ron's life life except for one day when something happened to Ron and a group of friends something kind of small but something that when you look back on it probably probably changed his entire life. Yeah so we. We were in a local convenience store called store. Twenty four cross the street from the main entrance to the Clark campus and they accused US shoplifting and tossed us out cecily guys just being rowdy earnings or wild. No we were shopping but I came back to campus episode and I was in my dorm with a couple of friends and I said you know. Why are we shopping there? How they can they treat us like this? What supports that store? We said what do we need what we can we can do this ourselves. We can have our own convenience store and I said you know this isn't going to be that hard. Let's go do it. And we approach the university. They weren't so keen on this but I moved the question to student body They voted in support of it and I basically agreed to spend that summer between my sophomore and junior here opening this convenience store guy. Wow So. What'd you guys Sal We sold Everything from drinks to Munchies two cookies and candy and you know our assistant manager would come to my apartment at five in the morning and we actually would go to this deep discount supermarket and buy I don't know ten or fifteen baskets full of merchandise that we'd stocked the store with and We hired twenty or thirty different students to work there. I will be very franken. Saint Joe's more interested in that store than when I was in my own academically. And and your guy who's all still focused on public policy in government but I guess this it was Kinda cool you liked. He kind of liked doing business running a business. Yeah and and you know. I didn't see myself as that kind of guy and it took me a wile to make sense of that but in so many ways running a business is no different than campaign in fact a campaign is a the business that that essentially has one day in which it ends a business campaign that goes on and never ends so at this point in his life. Ron Wasn't quite sure what he wanted to do. Business or politics but people around him saw how how much he loved running that convenience store and a lot of people said. Hey why don't you get an MBA. So Ron did he enrol at Harvard. Business School in Nineteen seventy six. And when he finished unlike a lot of his classmates who went into banking or finance ron decided to go into retail and he took a job in the mid west and a place called held the original cookie company. Twenty stores in shopping malls We grew it to about one hundred and twenty five. I took the job as the third year of the NBA. What I mean by that is I took a job as a district manager? Basically Iran ten or fifteen of these cookie stores half the United States and I spent went My time running around the country and I ended up opening thousands of these cookie stores around the country so as certain point you're learning about the cookie business I guess and then at a certain point you get this idea like hey I can do this myself. I can have my own cookie store yes and and I can literally remember traveling Cross Indiana. I'm away to Fort Wayne Dope a new cookie store and it hit me and I said why are we opening this in a Mav. There's a huge opportunity open these in in an urban setting. Why don't we open one and I can remember going to my boss? I remember him taking me to meet. Beat the CEO of the company. Said I wanNA open an urban cookie. Store looks him and he says we don't do that here. We Open Mall based retail units. I thought to myself well. If you're not GONNA do it. I'd like to go do it. Why shouldn't we and I'm the Kinda guy by Sam going to do it? I want to go do it and it led led me to actually resigning my job and I moved back to Boston and I started looking for real estate and the reality was. Nobody would Li space for cookies. Find any sir for cookie store because they thought it wouldn't make enough money to pay the rent. 'cause I had no credibility. Yeah I had no real money I had you know no balance sheet to sign a lease and so I went to my dad and I said I I want my inheritance. Whatever it's going to be I want the opportunity to use it and I had about twenty five thousand dollars Ned Essentially let me. He gave me seventy five thousand dollars and that one hundred thousand dollars became the GRUB stake the equity. That allowed us to build that. I four hundred square-foot cookie store. Wow in downtown Boston. What did you name the store? We named it the cookie jar and I can remember. We took the toll house recipe. Right it off the bag. I bought a small mixer and I would pass out cookies in front of the stories that we were building. It and I'd start to adjust the recipe based on what I learned talking to customers and and you were the baker. You were making cookies yourself. Yeah we opened. There were three employees. I made it was me and to folks I will never forget at that day. It just seemed like people never stopped walking a coming in and purchase fifty thousand people day going by and I'll never forget it. I got to the end of the day walking past or foot traffic. Yeah but I got to the end of that at first afternoon. We opened one o'clock guide and by six we closed and my back was hurting. Oh and legs were hurting. And I can't in the money and I I realize we only brought in four hundred dollars. "The first thing they we all expected from Houston Astros yesterday we we expected to hear from the Houston Astros yesterday regarding Brandon top man the assistant GM I remember his comments in the in the dugout star in the locker room after the ALCS when as he can reportedly kept screaming we're so glad we have soon repeatedly in reference to the the the star in reference to the picture that service seventy five game suspension last year for domestic violence all of that context is important here because he he directed his comments towards three female reporters that were there one of which was wearing domestic violence support bracelet and as you continue to think about what that means what it means moving forward the Astros initially reacted to the statement by calling out the reporter calling out Sports Illustrated and even in it is flat out saying did they were fabricating a story and making something out of nothing that's where it started now I think true window smartly said as we initially reacted to it Hey if this is the thing one thing we can expect is that we will get more eye witness accounts there were a lot of people in the room let's see what other people in the room set well other people in the room immediately came out and feverishly defended the reporter and the Sports Illustrated story that led us to what happened yesterday and look sometimes in the world all you want is an apology that sincere and what you want or for people to come out and explain what happened why it happened and say they're sorry for it without any sort of mitigating factors without any sort of walk back but with actual transparency there was an opportunity for the Astros to do that yesterday they did not this is what Jeff flew now said the Astor GM this is his initial apology announcement yesterday that they fired assistant GM branded top we have separate with brandy top any longer an employee of the Astros his behavior was inappropriate and not representative of who the Astros are in our culture and what we stand for that original reaction by the Astros was wrong and we own it as an organization there were many people involved in reviewing that approving that and I'm not going to get into the details of that it was wrong it was the Astros decision and that's from Italy that so many layers on that to decide by the way that you're not going to get into that but we'll get there in the second part of what he said is our initial believe was based on witness statements about the incident who who did they talk to who lied to the Astros if they're going to say that they were lied to and they're going to blame that on part of why they made the statement initially that they made then some mind it like we have the the opportunity in this moment the right I would say to ask them to tell us who lied and what's being done to the people that live the other part of what he said there is it I'm not going to get into it it was in Astor's decision regarding the statement that was made that means it he's saying several people within the Astros organization had the opportunity to not make the comments in response they had the opportunity to not though the reporter on the bus they had the opportunity to not try to ruin somebody's career and the on the opportunity to not protect somebody they didn't deserve protecting but they chose not to do that and he tells you flat out that several people within the organization approved that decision without telling you who that led to a heated back and forth in the room about who should be accountable this is important check it out you smeared and potentially damaged a person's career shouldn't there be a price paid for the people who decided that that was the idea in the way that Brandon tell me just how to pay with his career I don't know the answer that to be honest with you you run the organ is it you want baseball operations as you now right and I help him crane hasn't come today Jeff I I understand that and and we're we're taking responsibility and accountability for that and apologizing for it at this point that's that's all I can tell you I don't have anything else to give you marry on that I I mean are you taking accountability for it doesn't sound like it it sounds like what you're saying is Hey a bunch of people decided that the initial statement was okay and that's not on me and that's not really my decision I'm just the mouth piece standing up here in front of everybody to talk about it and in the meantime we're sorry that we said anything but we were misinformed me that's what his apology basically is he came in and said Hey we were lied to I'm not gonna tell you by who and so we fired the person that did it and we realize that you know we decided to make a statement that was perceived poorly worst apology ever

Grade schools ban Uber Eats, GrubHub deliveries during school day

"Of packing lunches, many high school students now pack their cell phones ordering food delivered to their school with apps liked grub hub door dash and Uber eats the deliveries have become so frequent and disruptive that many schools have banned them. Pat Watson is the principal at west Bloomfield high school in west Bloomfield Township Michigan he said, quote, it was getting to the point where you'd have eight ten fifteen deliveries a day. It's a building policy. You can't have food delivered during the school day unquote, other schools have done the same thing. School officials have addressed the issue in states from California to Florida. Diane Blaine is spokeswoman for Chippewa valley schools in Macomb County Michigan which is north of Detroit. She said, quote, we view it as a safety concern. Having strangers and people that we don't know coming to our buildings with delivery bags. We just don't allow it. I'm quote, Blaine said, the district's Dakota high school band the practice about three years ago, and it's other high school Chippewa valley followed suit some schools have policies explicitly prohibiting it others frown on it. But don't formally van. It all them say the practice has exploded with cell phone use. And the proliferation of delivery services, high school students are the only ones who order food deliveries to school. That's according to Jeff huger assistant manager of the jets pizza about a mile north of west Bloomfield high. He said that some students in elementary school. We'll have pizza delivered for lunch. I mean, it sure beats a carton of milk in some cafeteria pizza. Huger said, quote, the parents will call and say my kids lunches at noon, can you deliver a pizza to the office and maybe throw in a bottle of water, unquote. Looser good. They're staying hydrated. Parents typically pay what the credit card or through the jets app on their phone. The delivery driver will bring plates. Napkins if requested. Jets charges three dollars and fifty cents for delivery compared with four dollars for grub hub. He said that his pizza places across the street from a middle school and a prep school. In addition to two nearby elementary schools. He said all of them are good for business. He also mentioned that teachers are known to order pie for lunches. Well, that's what I was going to say is going to say the ban on this seems like it would hurt teachers more than students whose poor teachers. They just want to have pizza delivered to their teachers lounge. But now now students of even ruined that for them. Poor things they work really hard to wouldn't it be nice for them to just be able to do not have to run out and drive somewhere. Go through the drive thru not all the schools in the same area addressed the delivery issue in the same manner. The Plymouth canton school district just northeast of an Arbor Michigan, which operates three high schools in one location does not have a formal policy about food deliveries. But the building procedures don't allow it said spokesman, Nick, Brandon he said that the main reason for the ban of school safety, but there are other reasons as well Brennan said quote, the second that food enters the school office. It becomes the school offices responsibility, unquote. He added that it created concerns of food safety foodborne illnesses and allergic reactions. He said, quote, it's also overclouded issue for office personnel. If they're having to manage multiple food orders at a given lunchtime. With all the other things they have to be responsible for that's a concern as well on quilt. Brandon said that the district works hard to provide healthy good tasting food and. Cafeterias and students are always free to Brown bag it the principal at west Bloomfield said deliveries aren't always on time. Tardy deliveries made for tardy students. Watson said, quote, it's supposed to be here at twelve and my lunches done at twelve thirty now shows up at twelve thirty five so no I haven't gotten to class. But now, I've got my Panara, and I go to class to eat in their unquote Watson's at teachers object to kids eating class. But the students would complain it wasn't their fault that the delivery was late Watson also has heard plenty of excuses for why an order was placed. What's instead quilt kids say, oh, my mom forgot to put money on my lunch account. He said that one student claimed a cousin ordered it for him not knowing it wasn't allowed Watson said that claims seemed doubtful when the delivery driver knew the student's name. The school does allow deliveries to school after class end so students staying after school for a sport or other extracurricular activity can order all they want. He said what's said, quote, when I was in high school, we knew to pack two lunches one for lunch and one for after school, I guess the new normal as you whip out your cell phone and order some food unquote cell phones have become so pervasive in high schools that Watson has used them to his own advantage. When he wanted to remind kids of the no food orders during school hours policy. He sent it out in a tweet just goes to show that if your parents really love you they'd take you to Pinera the night before. Give you

Welcome to brain stuff from how stuff works. Hey, brain stuff, I'm more in Vogel bomb and during the Christmas season, Holly adorns houses, all over the world, the prickly green plant, and it's red berries, whether real or crafted from plastic are popular ornament for anyone wanting to make their space a little more festive. But where did this tradition begin? Why do we deck our halls with boughs of Holly every December? What does Holly represent in the celebration of Christmas despite its association with the Christmas season? Holly did not get its name from wholly the name of the plant is very similar across both traumatic and Latin languages and its origin is probably the proto Indo European root word Cal, which appropriately means prickly or to prick a proto Indo European being the ancient base language of all Indo, European languages even in ancient times. People took advantage of the sharp ends of hollies leaves druids hung it on windows and doorways to fend off evil, which is spirits before. Holly was hung in houses to accompany Christmas trees, it was considered to be a sacred plant by the. Druids well, other plants wilted in winter weather, Holly remained green and strong. It's buries a brightly colored red in the harshest of conditions. The druids regarded Holly as a symbol of fertility. Eternal life thought to have magical powers in Riddick. Lor cutting down a Holly tree would bring bad luck. In contrast hanging. The plate in homes was believed to bring good luck and protection. Holly was also thought to protect homes against lightning strikes Romans associated Hollywood Saturn. The God of agriculture and harvest and duct the halls with its bows. During the festival of saturnalia early Christian calendars, Mark Christmas Eve as template exhorted her meaning churches are decked though, supposedly saturnalia celebrators didn't allow some Christians to hang bows and honor of Christmas Christians adopted, the Holly tradition from druid Celtic and Roman traditions and its symbolism changed to reflect Christian beliefs today. Christians may consider highly symbolic of Jesus Christ in two ways, the red berries, represent the blood that Jesus shed on the cross on the day. He was crucified. Legend states that Holly berries were originally white. But that the blood Christ shed for the sins of humankind stained the berries, forever, red hollies pointed leaves symbolized the crown of thorns placed on Jesus's head before he died on that cross. Holly is known as Christ Dohrn in German, meaning Christ Owen, both of these symbols are meant to serve as a reminder to Christians of Jesus suffering. But they aren't the only stories tying Holly to Jesus one claims that the cross on which Jesus was crucified was constructed of Hollywood. Another says that Holly sprang up from his footsteps less. Common symbolism includes the hollies white blossoms, representing purity. And the idea that if the Holly used decorate a home for Christmas as prickly. The man of the house will rule for the coming year. But if the whole used is smooth the woman will rule traditionally Holly has been associated specifically with men for whom it was considered to bring good luck and protection, the female counterpart to Holly being Ivy. But let's take a closer look at the science behind this legendary plant Holly botanical name, Alex Aquaphor. Liam is a shrub or tree found primarily in North America Europe and Asia with hundreds of species of the plant ranging from short shrubs, two meters, high or about six feet tall trees up to forty meters high or about one hundred and thirty feet, it's known primarily for its bright crimson, berries, and prickly. Green leaves holies can be evergreen, meaning the plants glossy leaves are on the tree year round or deciduous. Meaning the leaves fall off seasonally white flowers bloom in may or June and with help from insects like bees, the female flowers produced those characteristic berries. Like its holiday companion mistletoe hollies berries are toxic to humans resulting in nausea and severe stomach aches when ingested not. So for some animals, though, berries are a vital source of food for birds such rushes and blackbirds. Although the scarlet berries are famously prominent in homes for the holiday season, they're not the only useful part of hollies, the berries are poisonous. But the green leaves have been used in herbal remedies for centuries for various medical conditions like dizziness fever anti tension, though. There's currently little medical proof of the plan's effectiveness. Also Hollywood is hard and compact making it excellent for carving. It's sometimes use to make chess pieces and walking sticks. If you have a passion for Holly three hundred and sixty five days of the year, the mission of the New Jersey-based Holly society of America is to stimulate interest promote research and collect and disseminate information about the genus Illex members can join a local chapter find out where to get the best Christmas Holly and gaze upon the Holly of the year. "Breath so what should i do love trent trent trent here got got caught dick handed he brown himself out and he called his boss's girlfriend yeah boss's girlfriend made a a salacious joke i think the i think there is like something to joke you don't think she would just make the joke completely out of the blue yeah but i think if anything what was meant by the joke was that you can flirt with me and i'll flirt back and and our flirtatious relationship can grow not actually call me drunk on your birthday we'll have sex here horse so he took it too far what if it was a guy so his girlfriend or his his managers still lady and the assistant manager is dude and on his way out was like a call me for birthdays sex you think that would be him flirting with him because this girl's also just attracted to only female so maybe she thought of it is such an out of the hand you don't know the possibility says bosses a lesbian but she has girlfriend her girlfriend could be by sex tual could be but so could a guy yes so so you could saying there's a chance that she was completely kidding not even joking a little bit you're not even serious a little less but i think also it's such a weird joke to make that i think that there was a kernel of truth there you can call me for birthdays sex.
