Enclave on edge: Armenia and Azerbaijan
"Armenia and either by Jan, rejected international calls for a ceasefire yesterday after deadly clashes broke out on Sunday pushing the two countries to the brink of war. Both have declared martial law and total military mobilization. At least one hundred people have been killed in the fighting which is involved artillery strikes and air power. The two former Soviet republics are locked in a decades-old conflict over the disputed province of Nagorno Carla. This marks the second time in less than three months that the countries have come to blows. This time edging closer to all out war one, which could ensnare of Turkey and Russia. We haven't seen detail death tolls from the by Johnny side, but the overall death toll now seems to be well north of one hundred peaches. Ski Is our Turkey correspondent that would make the fighting in nagorno-karabakh the heaviest since two, thousand, sixteen, when at least two hundred people were killed and on pace to be the worst since one, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety, four, the end of the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and what is that fight about it is about a region known as nagorno-karabakh disputed province legally recognized as part of by John. But controlled by Armenian forces to go back in history. Now, going to cut about had been a part of the Kingdom of a bar via over two thousand years ago and has been real sins by a succession of Empires. But under the Soviets nagorno-karabakh was a part of by John and as the USSR crumbled clashes erupted between the Armenian majority of the region which sought union with Armenia or independence, and the by Johnny minority and these devolved into the brutal war in which about thirty thousand people were killed and about a million displaced. Included episodes of ethnic cleansing and several atrocities. The war ended with a ceasefire in nineteen, ninety four, and as I mentioned or mean forces have held onto nagorno-karabakh itself, end to seven districts surrounding the region. So it's been despite the ceasefire still disputed since then correct not only has been disputed. There have been regular skirmishes the one in two, thousand sixteen, and as recently as this year in July, the sixteen people were killed in. Areas north of GonNa cut above thousands of Azerbaijanis responded to this also to the death of renowned as her by Johnny General by taking to the streets demanding that their government retake all of nagorno-karabakh. So why is it the conflict? This time seems to be escalating. So quickly, analysts see the signs of a much broader military offensive by as by John and a return to a much broader conflict than what we saw in previous years. Some of them told me the saw this as a much better prepared campaign with more troops and fighting on all parts of the line of contact or the frontline, and we're seeing is in addition to heavy weaponry, infantry helicopters and masses of drones on both sides. There's a threat that fighting could spill over into civilian areas and also into areas where pipelines. Deliver gas and oil from by John to Turkey through. Georgia. So it's clear on the ground then that this is a much more serious conflict but I mean, what set it off? There's a belief on both sides that there is no political solution, the new Armenian Prime Minister Nicol. Chagnon in his speech last year called for the reunification of the crowd about Armenia. Azerbaijan side feels that the only way it can recover at least parts of going to cut about or the outlying provinces is through force. Perhaps because of covid nineteen, there has been next to no international mediation of the conflict since this spring and that is said to have led to the clashes in July and the failure to mediate in the aftermath of July may have precipitated. What we're seeing today people in the region say that to some extent they saw this. Coming for miles and international community failed to prevent it and what is the international community's response. Now that it's escalated, the U. N. Security Council has called on the two sides to put an end to the fighting the European Union, the United States and Russia have also called for a ceasefire unlike other international actors Turkey has urged by John to push forward and edge of type air to one Turkish president said on September twenty eighth that peace would only come to. The region wants Armenia withdrew from Nagorno cut about his spokesperson added the next day that Turkey was quote unquote fully ready to help Azerbaijan, recover the enclave reports indicate that Mr Government has sent Syrian mercenaries who help Azerbaijan. It is also providing drones to the other by Johnny Army and our media accused Turkey of shooting down one of its warplanes, which is a charge that Turkish officials have denied and you mentioned Russia calling for a ceasefire how is Russia involved escalation? On the part of other by John or further, Turkish involvement could also drag in Russia which sells arms to Azerbaijan, but also has a mutual defense pact with Armenia. So in theory because not going cut about is not legally part of Armenia Russia is not under any commitment to defend Armenia in case of an attack on they're going to cut about and so far. In fact, Russia has only gone so far as to ask Turkey, to back its calls for a ceasefire. If Armenia dust come under attack by Azerbaijan or by Turkey, it seems Russia will have no choice but to defend Armenia and do you think that's the way things are heading I mean is there a way to calm the tensions here so far calls for a ceasefire have fallen on deaf ears it may be that Azerbaijan will succumb to Russian pressure and that both sides will. Lay Down Arms. It may be that other by John will simply settle for partial gains especially in the seven district near not going to talk about and declare victory, which would placate public opinion at home but this may yet get out of control.

Is it fair to say that what you've learned whether you knew it or not at the time start at 2 equipped you for the next event that would happen in your journey off. So actually not okay. Okay. Hey can't blame a guy for trying you know, it's going to be fun with me off so actually not because they say open the doctor becomes the patience of so, so that's exactly what happened to me today when I'm smart. They're older less dramatic. I know how much what I learned then I use now with my clients with coaching exactly. Am I had to go through the vulnerable experience of the relocation and even feel shame and getting see and last with my change that I can get to the other side and understand the difference when you lead others through change and when you yourself go through change and until that day, I didn't understand. What does it mean even though I you know, I got married I had kids I changed jobs. I was the Army gave you that I was not prepared for that specific change until it actually happened to you as you were going through it, right? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. I understand now thank you know, I definitely understand. So so that's where the education comes in as you're going through it. And as you said earlier, you've led many people through these types of changes, but how much of a difference between leading someone through it and going through it yourself off? Did you did you pick up woman or did you detect a big difference slight difference? It's it's a huge difference and just to to help people understand what we're talking about. I'm talking about the relocation experience that you mentioned earlier. So that's kind of like in the worst timing for me, but currently having kids or relocating is never there. There is never a more a good time right wage. A good timing. So we we moved to to New York City and it's not like I was naive and I thought that it will take me 2 days and everything going to be like when bam you might need to help the family get roots and we will need to start together again, and it will be my role while my husband is starting his new job with the same company, but just in New York City, right and.

Donald Trump reportedly spent $70K to style his hair during 'The Apprentice'
"The New York Times reported on Donald Trump's tax returns, one detail stood out too many. Trump claimed that he spent $70,000 on hairstyling for his reality, show The Apprentice and classified it as a business expense so that he could deduct it from his tax bill. And that made NPR's Tom Dreisbach wonder is that legal? When people get in trouble with the IRS. They might call a lawyer like Sam Brotman in San Diego. Could I just ask you have you ever dealt with a case with someone who claimed a haircut as a deduction? No, I haven't. We've had a lot of strange deductions in this firm without a car rentals trips to Vegas, but a hair beauty salon type of staff is very, very difficult to pass off. It's because it is illegal to claim a personal expense as a business expense. Still, the line between personal and business can be blurry. And over the years, people have tried to make the case to the IRS people like Richard Drake in the 19 sixties, Drake served in the Army and the Army required him to get a haircut every two weeks. So Drake figure that's a business expense, and he deducted 50 bucks for haircuts. The text court disagreed and found that expenses for everyday grooming are inherently personal, even for soldiers. It would have say You're a performer and you need to look or sound a certain way to get jobs like the actor Ned Sparks. You got a swell voice and a great personality. You're different. You got class that sparks in the movie the gold diggers of 1933. You might have heard that when he said the word class. There was a slight whistle. Will sparks heard it, too. And so we got dentures to fix it at tax time, he wrote off the cost of those dentures as a business expense. Because he said he'd lose jobs without fixing his teeth. But the court said it would be difficult to imagine anything more personal than a set of false teeth denied again. Courts of referenced both of those cases when judging whether people can write off hair care, and that brings us to Donald Trump in 2000 for while promoting the Apprentice, Trump said his hair care was actually pretty simple. You know what I do I take a shower, wash it. I then comb it. I then said it and then I spray it and it's good for the day. But Trump's taxes claim more went into the hair. In just a wash. Koman spray a lot more 70,000. Is that the number? That's the number that's a big number. And that's Jennifer blew in and accounting professor at the Wharton Business School, she says if Trump paid that money for his everyday look That is most likely illegal. But she says there may be an exception if the president was having his hair done right as he was on the set of the apprentice, pinning down the hair in a certain way to be on screen. Then that expense would be potentially deductible. That is, if Trump rather than the show paid for it.

Why the Best Things in Life Are All Backwards by Mark Manson
"Why the best things in life are all backwards partout by mark, Manson, of Mark. Manson Don net. There's another curve one that you've probably never seen or heard of before this largely because I make a lot of it up that steep inverted Kerr. The inverted curve is the bizarro twilight zone curve where effort and reward have a negative correlation that is the more effort put into doing something the more you will fail to do it. Drown proofing exists on inverted curve the more you put into rising to the surface the more likely you'll be to fail at it. Similarly, the more you want to breathe the more likely you are to choke on a bunch of chlorinated water. But I know what you're thinking. So what Mark I've usually had too many Pinochle Ladas to even find the deep end of the pool much less buying my arms and legs and try to survive in it. Who gives it about inverted curves. Is. True. Few things in life functional an inverted curve but the few things that do are extremely important. In fact, I will argue that the most important experiences and goals in life all exist on an inverted curve. Effort and reward have a linear relationship when the action is mindless and simple effort and reward of a diminishing returns relationship when the action is complex and multi variant. On the action becomes purely psychological and experience that exists solely within our own consciousness the relationship between effort and reward becomes inverted. Pursuing happiness takes further away from it attempts at greater emotional control only remove us from it. The desire for greater freedom is often what causes us to feel trapped the need to be loved and accepted prevents us from loving and accepting ourselves. All this Oxley once wrote quote the harder we try with a conscious will do something the less we shall succeed proficiency and results come only to those who have learned the paradoxical art of doing and not doing or combining relaxation with activity and quote. The most fundamental components of our psychology are paradoxical does is because when we consciously try to create a state of mind, the desire for that state of mind creates different and often opposite state of mind from the one we're trying to create this is the backwards law explained in chapter one of the subtle art of giving. Desiring a positive experience is itself a negative experience? Accepting a native experience is a positive experience. But this extends to most if not all aspects of our mental health and relationships. Number one control the more we strive to control our own feelings impulses the more powerless we will feel army national life is unruly enough uncontrollable, and it's the desire to control. That makes it worse. Conversely, the more we accept our feelings and impulses, the more were able to direct them and process them. Number two freedom. The constant desire for more freedom ironically limits us in a number of ways. Similarly, it's by limiting ourselves by choosing committing to certain things in life that we truly exercise our freedom. Number three happiness trying to be happy makes us less happy. Accepting unhappiness makes us. Happy. Number four security trying to make ourselves feel as secure as possible generates more insecurity being comfortable with uncertainty is what allows us to feel secure Number five love. The more we try to make others love and accept us the less they will and more importantly the less we will love and accept ourselves. Number six respect the more we demand respect from others the last they will respect us the more we ourselves respect others the more they will come to respect us. Number seven trust the more we try to make people trust US less inclined they will be to do so the more we trust others the more they will trust us in return. Number eight confidence the more we try to feel confident the more insecurity in Zion. We will create the more we accept our faults the more comfortable we will feel in our own skin. Number nine change the more we desperately want to change ourselves the more we will always feel as though we are not not whereas the more we accept ourselves the more we will grow and evolve. Will be too busy actually doing cool to notice. Number ten meaning the Mauri pursue a deeper meaning or purpose lives. The more self obsessed shallow. We will become the more we try to add meaning to others lives the more profound impact we will feel. These internal set logical experiences exist on an inverted curve because they are both the cause and the effect of the same thing our minds. When he desire happiness, your mind is simultaneously the thing that desiring and the target of its own desires. When it comes to these lofty abstract existential goals. Our minds are like a dog who after a lifetime successfully chasing and catching various small creatures has turned into cited to exact same strategy on its own tail to the dog. This logical after all chasing his led her to catch everything else in her dog you life why not her tail to? But a dog can never catch her own tail more. She chases the more her tail seems to run away as because the dog lacks the perspective to realize that she in the tail of the exact same thing. The goal is to take your mind a wonderful thing that has spent his life learning and chase various creatures and teach it to stop chasing its own tail to stop chasing meaning and freedom and happiness because those only served to move it further away from itself to teach it to achieve what it desires by giving up what it desires to show it, how the only way to reach the surface is by letting itself sank. And how do we do this? By letting go by giving up by rendering. Not, a weakness but out of respect that the world is beyond our grasp, a recognizing that we are fragile and limited and but temporary specs in the infinite reaches of time. You do it by relinquishing control not because you feel powerless but because you are powerful because he decided to let go of things that are beyond your control, you decide to accept that sometimes people won't like you that often you will fail they. Usually you have no think Lou, while you're doing. You lean into fear and uncertainty, and just when you think you're going to drown just as he reached the bottom, it will launch you back to your salvation.

Why a private section of the border wall is allegedly failing

Actually, Fisher Comes from North Dakota. Recommended strongly by a great new senator. As you know, Kevin Cramer, by May of 2019 Tommy Fisher had the president's attention but still couldn't land a contract to build the government's wall. The Army Corps of Engineers, which oversees border wall construction, pointed to the company's lack of experience building border walls to prove they could fissure teamed up with we build the wall. First in New Mexico and later here on the banks of the Rio Grande admission. On the banks of any rivers difficult. But building on the raging Rio Grande is especially challenging, made more complicated because the U. S Mexico border but straight down the middle of it. So any plans to build on it must be approved by the International boundary and Water Commission for I, B. W C. Sand and gravel didn't get that approval before they started. Bulldozes. What steps did they skip? All of them. What should they have done? They should have gone to the I B W c to the A and presented their plan an actual plan. What about this idea that you know this is private money being used on private land and a landowner could do whatever he wants. They absolutely can do whatever they want on their property. As long as it doesn't affect other people's property. And you think the wall infringes on other clearly does. The way the bollards were built is gonna cause clogging of that wall, So those followed the trash or debris could get stuck in there and then the waters. It's a giant break, just like a rake in your yard. It's going to catch all that debris and redirect that water. Penna filed a lawsuit on behalf of a neighboring wildlife refuge called the National Butterfly Center, which feared the wall would cause flooding to its property. U. S government also suit on behalf of the I. B. W C. Good walls make good neighbours. But this wall did not. We've got rogue priest running around anti Trump anti Won't we build the walls? Bryan Cole fragile, launched attacks against anyone who opposed their wall. Falsely saying the national Butterfly Centre was the site of a rampant sex trade and that the Army Corps of Engineers was part of the deep state even took game and Father Royce Nights a local priest to oppose the Trump wall. Accusing him of promoting child trafficking. Also not true. We build the wall people came after you personally and that's something I didn't even know who they were. They're coming after the local priest. Yeah, I guess you're not from around here comes from around here. We can. Even Mom and Dad can disagree about things without being mean and nasty. Last December, Brian Colfax bragged in an interview that we build the wall had a direct line to the White House. We have Crispo back and Steve Bannon A lot of people that are tied in with the Trump administration, so we're able to back channel things to the Trump Administration and let them know what we're doing, But what they were doing was falling apart. A recent engineering inspection after summer storms revealed deep gashes under the foundation of the wall. That's Mariana Trevino, right, who runs the Butterfly center line underneath it. This was a normal seasonal rainfall and what happened to the wall the foundation washed out from under enormous sections of it, His attorney said after this, that this is just a normal part of new construction if you walked out of your new house And had a 30 FT hole under your home foundation. Would you consider that normal? There's the end of the hall right
Military leaders say active-duty suicides up 20% during COVID-19 pandemic
"Have increased by as much as 20% this year, and some is incidents of violent behavior. Well, they've spiked a service member's struggle under the Corona virus ward at more zone deployments. National disasters and civil unrest. While the data is incomplete and causes of suicide are complex, Army and Air Force officials tell The Associated Press they believe the pandemic. Are We Being Forced to Buy Stocks
"Last week in the insiders guide email newsletter I pointed out the expensive valuation of US stocks. Specifically I showed that the forward price to earnings ratio the P. E. based on earnings estimates over the next year was twenty, two point nine. That's three standard deviations above its average of sixteen times going back to two thousand, three at data from Ned Davis. Research. In reply to that email, Andrew wrote regarding stocks being expensive on a forward e true but there's no alternative. What do you do with bond yields near Zero and the vanguard total stock market? Index. Fund. Yielding two percent. By VPI, the vanguard total stock market ETF. JASA forwarded to me a paper by Bridgewater says, which I'll discuss in more detail later in this episode. I had a similar question from a plus member in the money for the rest of US plus member forums. He wrote. So the Fed signals that it wants to keep rates low for three more years. Canada's pension. Fund is reevaluating bond-holdings and you've got an army of small and large investors bidding up companies like Tesla and snowflake to absurdly hype. All this combined to make me think are we as individual investors now forced to buy equities? Is this the mother of all bubbles in which there's literally no other things suitable for purchase. There is a lot of speculation in stocks right now. Jim. Bianco Bianca Research pointed out that small traders are dominating the options market. Bear most of the trades right now and seventy five percent of that volume is an option contracts expire in two weeks. So short term bets. Look at South Korea and article from Bloomberg pointed out that day traders in South Korea have accounted for eighty seven and a half percent of the total value of stocks traded in the first part of September. You. Some men chief strategist at Samsung Securities said retail investors appear to be seeking short-term profits after hearing their next door neighbors earned lots of money from stocks after the March selloff. Receiving a similar situation in India. The Financial Times reports that the number of individual investor accounts rose twenty percent from the start of the year, the twenty, four million, and they point out that around the world, an influx of investors are investing in stocks for the first time. Are. We in a bubble? Is it a speculative frenzy? Are we forced to buy these stocks because there are no alternatives with also? One of the things I like to do investing is think about what's different this time what's unusual? What what doesn't fit the pattern? I had two instances of investing this past week where something didn't fit the pattern Lebron, I were driving up in the mountains of Montana and a small bear cub really bolted right in front of us no idea what it was running from. My son suggested he was running from the year twenty twenty. And then few days later at our front door, there were seven cows drinking water from the driveway eating our bushes. There are no cows around us. We live in an area that nobody keeps cows but there they were right in front of my house. Turns out. They had strayed from the National Forest, which is not very far some outfitters have grazing rights and drop off the cows and leave them there all summer pick them up come late October, and they had straight down because some of that newly cut barley fields, but it didn't fit the pattern. Cows at your front door. Don't fit the pattern. What's different now on investing front that could justify more expensive valuations for stocks. Well, for the first time, ever US interest rates are near zero from short term out to ten years. This is known as a flat yield curve, which is an unusual. We've had flat yield curves in the past. But it's flat near zero. There was a flat yield curve where ten treasury bonds and cash for yielding similar back from two thousand and five to two thousand seven. But yielding four percent. And from two thousand to two, thousand, two cash and tenure treasures were yielding five to six percent. Today, the ten year Treasury yield is zero point, six percent and cash is zero. The Federal Reserve intense to keep it that way. The recent policy statement suggests that they will keep their policy rate. What's known as the Fed funds rate near zero until labor market conditions have improved. The. Unemployment rate has dropped close to to to maximum employment and that inflation has risen to two percent is on track to moderately exceed two percent. They included their economic and rate projections and all, but four officials on the committee. Expect the Fed funds rate is still be near zero at the end of twenty, twenty three. Rates are low across the board. It is a different investment environment than we have ever faced before. And that's what this paper by bridgewater associates was about. It was titled Grappling With the New Reality of zero bond yields virtually everywhere. It was written by Bob Prince Greg Jensen Melissa fear, and Jim Haskell. I. Discussed Bridgewater Associates Founder Ray dallies views back in episode three, hundred changing world order in this paper bills off that. Before we continue let me pause and share some words from one of this week sponsors masterworks. I've shared on the show how low interest rates are on bonds and yields and cash about zero money has to be invested somewhere in preserving your wealth is as hard as it's ever been. That's where masterworks comes in. If you're looking to diversify out of the traditional public markets, then take a look at masterworks. They make blue chip art investing possible works by artists like Banksie, 'cause and Warhol. "Monday. The second of April seventeen seventeen thirty nine marked a significant day in the history of Christianity and it was on that day that John Wesley finally abandoned his reticence to preach outside the church and at King's Wood in Bristol. He took to open air. Evangelism Wesley's decision Asian brought him face to face with the common people and ignited a revival. The likes of which this country has never seen before. I may never see again regarding not great day. Wesley wrote in his diary. These words at four in the afternoon I submitted to be more vile. I love that. That's crazy man. I submitted to be more vile and proclaimed in the highways the glad tidings of salvation speaking from a little eminence in underground adjoining to the city to about out three thousand people the Scripture on which I spoke with this the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor hair. Sent me to heal the brokenhearted to preach deliverance to the captives recovery of sight to the blind to set at liberty them that are bruised to proclaim the acceptable year of the lawsuit when Wesley finally abandoned the church approach to go and preach to the world to preach to the common people the portion of scripture that he chose to preach on. Was this passage that we're looking at this receiving subsequent history of course records that John Wesley lived out about text bringing the Gospel to the disenfranchised and to the needy masses of this country. Again if you know anything about ovation on me you know that the Salvation Army is as a grandchild of John Wesley. He's in our records he's in our DNA in the early days. At least our battle cry was for all the world in our early days offices went and appointed to call. They were appointed pointed to towns and they were that focus on those in spiritual and physical and emotional need in that community not not just on their congregation. So what's changed. Jesus still has that worldwide mission not sense of being for the world for our community not exclusively for Christians uh-huh and for the church. The question is if Jesus does do we whereas our our focus. It's lovely to come together. It's lovely to care and love each other as we do here to feel as if we're family. I'm we should never lose that. But Jesus came for those outside the family that should be why basingstoke core is here to we exist not for ourselves but for those outside of our doors for some reason which perhaps we will never fully understand this this side of heaven. Jesus is counting on us to get out there in the world and prepare the way for him in the way that we look and act like like him around those we spend our lives with our mission is an extension of Jesus mission. Our Holiness is a mobile holiness. It's not something we leave the doors when we leave here this evening we take it with us. It's a holiness cleanest that he's lived anywhere and everywhere. So ask yourself this evening. Do you have a heart for the world. Do you still believe that we can win. The world for Jesus could basingstoke being stoke core win basingstoke for Jesus the answer is only in Holy Spirit power and only if we consistently focus on rescuing the perishing around us. We must love them. We must care for them. We must ache for them. We must hurt for them. We must weep for them. We must open up to them to give ourselves away to see the needs in the community around us and to meet them finally crosby right in Hasaan rescue the perishing duty demands it strength ally ally Labor the Lord will provide back to the narrow way patiently win them. Tell the poor wanderer. A Savior has died. Rescue the parachuting care for the dying. Jesus is Merciful. Jesus will save. Will you join that mission of Jesus this evening. Let's sing these words together at so number. Nine hundred twenty seven songbook on the screen..

"Let's pray together. Ebony father as we open your word this evening we ask you to speak to Louis to challenge US where we need challenging to require us to help win the weld. It's for Jesus to nourish US and help us to live for you in this coming week. We pray these prayers is in your name over the last couple of weeks. We have looked at this. This three part series all about change that horrible seaward that lots of don't like particularly in this modern autumn world where everything seems to change every five minutes but what we've learned over the last couple of weeks. I hope is that God wants Change Zhou a few weeks ago. We thought about changing ourselves last week we thought about changing now call and this evening. We think that it's time them to change the World Catherine booth once wrote if we are back to better the future we must disturb the present if we to better the future. We must disturb the president. God wants changing our lives in our core on in the world around around us. And what he needs us to be is ever-growing ever-changing disciples who are his change agents in the world this evening. We're thinking about winning the world for Jesus that comes from the Great Commission. We Find Great Commission. Matthew Chapter Twenty Eight Verses Eighteen to twenty twenty where Jesus comes to his disciples and says all Party and Heaven and on Earth has been given to me go there for a make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son of the Holy Spirit teaching them to observe all that I've commanded you and behold I am with you always to the end of the age. Jesus commanded his disciples and by extension his checks including ourselves to go and make disciples of all all nations to win the world for Jesus. Now if you know anything about the Salvation Army's history and I guess that most of you know in quite a bit about the salvation history then you know that. Our founders William and Catherine booth and their peers those Christian mission and in the Salvation Army in his early day early days took that great commission very very seriously they took it on. They run with it. So when the Christian mission changed its name to the Salvation Army in eighteen. Seventy eight William Booth who had become the general of the Salvation Army wrote in the Christian Mission magazine. These words the Christian mission has met in Congress to make war. It is organized the Salvation Army to carry the blood of Christ and the fire of the howdy ghost into every corner of the world. That's what he thought. The Salvation Army's purpose was to carry the blood of Christ and the fire of the holy. Any ghost into every corner of the world and Catherine Booth wrote around about the same time the decree has gone forth. Both the kingdoms of this world should become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ and he show rain. Who's right it is from the river to the ends of the Earth? We we shall win. It is only a question of time and then she wrote. I believe that this movement is to inaugurate the Great Final Final Conquest of our Lord. Jesus Christ she truly believed that the Salvation Army was going to be the movement inaugurated the Great Final Conquest of our Lord. Jesus Christ what do you think about that one on exactly. Why not because we we may say well? Let's Victorian arrogance to say that this movement is the one to inaugurate the Great Final Conquest of our Lord. Jesus Christ but they really believed it. They really believe there and from this conviction that they would be the ones that would inaugurate this great final conquest of our Lord. Oh Jesus Christ the growth of the Salvation Army mission in the world grew at breath taking speed and it only grew with that breath taking speed because God was with them and they truly believed that this was what was going to happen that they really would take Jesus easiest on his blood and fire the hardy ghost into every corner of the world but they would win the world for Jesus. How could they have that kind of conviction? How could they have that kind of confidence? Will they believed in God. He wanted to win the world for himself. John Three Sixteen says God so loved the world. It doesn't say for God also love Christians. For God's love the Church for God so loved some people and not others says for God so loved the world that he gave gave his only son whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. They knew that God's mission was for the world not just for the church which not just for the Salvation Army not just the Christians and that Jesus lived and died for the world. Not just for you you and for me. How did they know that? Because Jesus Christ said that throughout his ministry on this evening we're we're looking at the words that he said at the beginning of his mystery his mission and ministry. I was more difficult to saying. I thought I'll try that again this evening. We're looking at the words that he said at the beginning of his mission and Ministry Luke Chapter Four if you want to turn to do it in your Bibles Luke four verses fourteen to thirty and that's on page ten thirty one of our call bibles and if you remember to bring your copy of Grapevine and you'll you'll find some notes on the page to help you as we read these words together. So barrels can income and read Luke Chapter Four Verses Fourteen to thirty Jesus Return to Galilee in the power of the spirit. A news about tim spread throughout the whole countryside. He taught in the cynical and everyone preston. He went to Nazareth where he'd been brought up. And on the Sabbath Day he went into the synagogue. US US with And he stood up to read the scroll of the Prophet side was hunted to him. Unrolling it he found the a place where it was written. The spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to preach good news to the pool. He has sent me to proclaim freedom to Business under cover of sight for the blind to release the oppressed to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Then he rolled up the scroll gave it back to. The attendant sat down the ice of everyone in the synagogue. Functioned John Him and he began by saying to them today. This scripture is fulfilled in your hearing all spoke. Well of him were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. Isn't this Joseph. Suddenly Jesus Said said to them surely will quote this program to me. Physician heal the ill south to here in your hometown. What we pudge that? You didn't companion. I tell you the truth. He continued. No Prophet is accepted in his hometown. I assure sure you were many of those in Israel in the largest time when the skies was shots for three and a half years and there was a severe farming's route at lund yet. Elijah was not sent to any of them but to a widow inside of in the region of Sidon and there were many Israeli with leprosy in the time of the lives of the prophets yet. Not One of them was Clinton's only namen Syrian and all. The people in the synagogue was furious when they had this they got up. Drove your mouth to the town. UNTUK into the brow of if the hill on which the town was built in order to throw him down the cliff but he walked right through the crown and went on his way..

"How much has changed in our lifetimes. That Moore has changed in the last fifty years and has changed in the thousand years before that pace of change seems to be getting quicker and quicker. Do you ever get tired of the pace of change. Do you ever think to yourself what I could just do it. Getting off the world for a moment and catching up catching my breath and catching up a little bit. Ah The pace of change today can make us feel like if everything's changing. Almost nothing standing still is moving at a faster. Doing foster pacing the prevailing culture of today is that we want bigger and better for me and for mine. Well it's our response. What's the salvation is response? Sometimes I think that salvation chaumet coal not this one of course their responses to retreat from the world to hide in citadels and to await. Jesus turn and let the change go on outside. There are some Salvation Army Corps who've become fortresses against against change inside of those core. They avoid the change. That's going on in the world and so those places has become places where nothing ever changes and woe betide the officer ever turns up and says what about moving the piano or a few chairs or how about if we change the times of the meetings. What about worship Band Catherine booth one of our founders said if we ought to better the future we must disturb the president if we are to better the future we must disturb the present and you know what she was only following God God and all of that because the Bible makes it clear that God wants change in Philippians chapter one verse six? Paul says I'm sure if this this that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of. Jesus Christ I want. That sounds like change good work. That's big begun in us. But that will keep changing and transforming US until it's completed on the day of Jesus Christ and inefficient chapter one verse nine to ten. Paul says is the golden makes known to us the mystery of his will according to his purpose which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of all time to unite all things things in him things in heaven and things on earth in other words the whole universe is moving towards being united in Christ all things in heaven and all things asks on earth that's why the world is always changing. God wants change in our lives. He wants changing our core and he wants to change in the world around us but for that he needs ever-growing ever-changing disciples. You are God's change agents then in the world around us. We're going to think about that in the context of our passage this evening from Luke Chapter Ten Verses Twenty five to thirty seven is a very well known. Passage is the story of the Good Samaritan but I think it has something to say to us about the change that God wants in ourselves. Let's listen to these words.

"To understand the full revelation of God that he has shown to us otherwise what happens is we define I find God in our own image and we try to put him in a box so the first thing is we need to be renewed in the spirit of our minds uh-huh so that we are right thinking about God's then Paul moves onto lots of other practical ways in which we can live out our holiness and model will Jesus life for highly liquid. He says we can speak. Truthfully we can deal with reality as it really is and we can assume responsibility when things go wrong rather than trying to pass the buck or sweep it under the carpet and pretend it didn't really happen. Paul says we can control our anger. We can show that. We don't use anger in a simple way. which is show that when we are angry? It's a constructive destructive anger rather than a destructive and Paul says we can refuse to hold a grudge. We can let go of an unforgiving spirits we can decide not to descend into petty passive aggressiveness grudges. VEGGIES and bitterness are one of the best ways the devil has for causing splits and divisions in his people one of the best weapons Z. has grudges and bitterness. They separate people from each other either forcing individuals from the core or separating core into cliques factions. Paul says give no opportunity to the devil. Let's very practical concrete holiness us. Just don't give the devil foothold. Paul says we can accept our responsibility in life and worked to supply our practical needs when we have more than enough for practical nieves. Then we can choose to share with others and if we're able all to work and to be productive we can share with those who are unable to work and be productive. Says we can speak only to to build others up rather than slandering people or Gossiping about them ridiculing them or insulting them we can choose to encourage people hole in stead. We all need encourages. Don't we I thank God for the encourages. In my life to you know this morning I came off the platinum platform and I came off the platform and throw string a sentence together properly this morning. Apparently I even said to you at the end of the meeting the Benediction for tonight is we were still to learn moaning and yet they're still people can encourage me after the meetings. I thank you for doing that. We all need encourages. Conversations can be influenced by the needs of those that we are speaking to so that we can say what they need to hear in order to build them up and onto encourage them so poor concludes in verses thirty one thirty two that all bitterness wrath and anger and clamor and slander. Be Put away from you along with all malice. Be Kind to one another tenderhearted forgiving one. Another as Gordon. Christ forgave you. This is not high. Saluting theological fickle language. This is concrete practical holiness concrete practical things that we can put into practice day by day through the power of the Charlie spirits. Why because Jesus wants salvation is he wants us as basingstoke corn he wants to salvation? Army May live out its call to radical counter cultural obedience. You only have to look through this list to see how counter culturally is. It's different from the way the world works totally the opposite to the way the world works. Paul calls us to live out our salvation. ISM by living out a changed life Christian living requires us to continually tenuously put off our old self and continually put on new life. Just as many of us take off and put on a uniform said there are kind of symbol of that taking off our old life and putting new lives but sadly over the years. Maybe I've even been one of them on occasions too many salvation. This limit their discipleship. They limit their holy living. They limit their holiness to what they do when they put their uniforms on on Sunday. They live what looks like a holy life in their salvation. EST World when they're at the core or doing call ministry wherever that happens to be but look very different when you go out into the secular world and observe them there in the world where they spend most of their time in the salvation is worlds they can be seen proudly wearing their prestige and cleaned uniforms. Worshiping Learning Bain Disciples enjoying fellowship with fellow salvation this welcoming newcomers into the core and using their spiritual Gifts but when out in the secular world they change the guided by different families. They follow the world's values even though those world values often clash with the values of the Kingdom of God consumerism. Tempts them to buy more things thinks. Because that's just the way that things are in the real world the tempted to earn money in a fraudulent way or morally questionable way. Because that's just the world works. It's what everyone does in the world. I find themselves elves in conversations where other people are insulted or demeaned and they failed to challenge those in the conversation and to offer compassion respect. Instead Jesus calls us all of us to put off our self centered. Mines and I'll self-centered false Selves and to put on his self emptying mind put on our new selves. And he calls us to do that. What Day by day and to do it out there as well as in here? He calls us to put on his character and to put on his righteousness justness. He wants us to live lives. That are marked by his truth and his love. It's counter cultural. It's radical it's radical. It's holy shakes us out of any sense of complacency and it's a full-time calling a part time job but it's also concrete and practical all these things in the list that Paul this in seventeen thirty two and if Asians chapter for all practical things we could do. Tomorrow I'm many of us will because it's concrete and practical. It's not beyond around our capability. Something we are capable of doing in the power of the Holy Spirit. So let's ask ourselves taking. What is it that we're willing to risk to live out the values of the Kingdom of God wherever we find ourselves tomorrow? What is it that we're willing to risk to live out the values of the Kingdom of God wherever we find ourselves tomorrow? We're we live a tame drawl dry dull insipid lukewarm holiness. In the safety of our call life just on a Sunday when we come together either a where we let Jesus loose in the world. We let Jesus looks and the world going to pray together and our response on this evening. Some number two hundred and eighty eight vow came from above the pure celestial fire to impart kindle flame of sacred love on the main altar of my heart's if you're feeling dry and dull this evening and he knows dry bones to live again and then this is a song to pray. Hi as we as we sing these versus. If you fail the flame of the Holy Spirit is about to go out in your soul and in your hearts then. This is the song to pray as we sing through these verses let by glory burn with inextinguishable blaze and trembling to its source return in humble prayer and fervent praise. And then we this great third verse. This is a fantastic bread threat for this week. Jesus confirm my heart's desire to work. And speak and think doc for the remake not your privacy evening Jesus confirm my heart's desire to work and speak in think for the still bill. Let Me God the Holy Fire and still stirrup gift in me. We're GONNA live out concrete practical. Let's go home. We need to guard the spirit's fire spirits flagging in our lives ready for all life. Perfect will my acts of faith and love repeat till death. Endless mercy seal make the sacrifice complete. The place of prayer is open. If you WANNA come and pray with God here this evening if you want somebody to pray with you come empty-handed want to prey on your own and come with something in your hand but but let's make this prayer sing this prayer as we sing. I want to start with a nice big question. What is the Salvation Army? What is the Salvation Army? Why does the Salvation Army exist? What's its purpose? I also that because sometimes I look at the salvation particularly in the Western world. and I wonder if we're not in a crisis of identity that we don't know what the Salvation Army's that we're not quite clear on in ways that perhaps we used used to in our very early days we were most definitely a radical Christian movement that called people to Jesus radical way of living and just think about our early days. We actually had the brass neck. Do use up phrase down here next year. That's good. We have the brass neck back to go to the poorest places of Victorian London to go to the gutters to go to those Victorian slums and we have to brass neck to say eight to those people the people who are marginalized and on the fringes of our society you can be saved and you can live a radical holy me life you can live a life of radical discipleship unholy living but when I look could our recent history in Western world. I wonder if we're prepared just to settle for complacency when we we compare ourselves to our early forefathers have we just settled for complacency for the last forty or so years we seem to have been content in just to become another institutionalized church. We've we've worked hard to become just another denomination and we've become enlarged pie are very well loved and well supported charity whenever I go out and collect or stand collecting people. Paul always say we love the Salvation Army always prepared to give to the Salvation Army. Sometimes it looks as though we're barely Christian Social Services Agency ED prepared to deliver a very high level of professional social service help. But sometimes when we've done that we've downplayed our faith and we've been unwilling to help those that we've helped seek help with their spiritual journey as well as with their physical and emotional needs. What's I wonder sometimes if we simply expected out decline the you know the way the trajectory that we're on particularly in the the Western world is just the way that is that we content just to Peter out until we simply cease to exist? Maybe we think think. Limited lifespan is simply inevitable as far as the Salvation Army's consent. Well I believe that. That's not our only option. How about you? I believe. That's not our only option. Jesus is still calling the Salvation Army to be credible followers Of his where the Salvation Army has become dry and dull. I still believe that those dry bones can live where we become lukewarm. I believe in the Holy Spirit can ignite US and direct us once more where there are salvation in this core and elsewhere who's holiness is dying for lack of oxygen. I believe the Holy Spirit can breathe new life into them do. Do you believe that there is still time for the Salvation Army and for Beijing. Cortin live out. Its calling as a vital movement kind of compassionate APP committed followers of Jesus and already see around me I see compassionate followers and committed followers of Jesus business living out their lives are salvation is around me all the time. So how can we ensure that we are the radical cool disciples that Jesus still needs today. We'll eat versus from a vision chapter four. I think can help us. And he is going to come common read versus seventeen to thirty two..

"Let's pray together Lord. We have just stunned that we love you that we want to be in relationship with view that we want to be in relationship. We also as we open your word this evening that you will help us to be in ever closer relationship with you. Help us to live like you help us to display your likeness to those around us because we abide in you because of our close relationship with you well in your name and so the passage. We're looking at this evening. Is John Twenty one John. Chapter Twenty One verses fifteen to twenty five if you picked up one of our bibles is on the way in. And that's on page one zero nine zero and if you picked up some message notes on the way and then you can follow those as we look at this passage together the is a holiness movement. One of the great themes of love salvation. EST Life is holiness and living that holiness living that holy life to full measure. But do you ever get the impression impression that holiness holy living is all about living by the rules. You get ever feel that way some vacation as you're allowed to say yes or no sometimes thank you Mike. Can you remember some of the rules that we followed in days gone by. I can remember the days when the rule was that we were expected to go to every meeting on Sunday and in my situation that meant to who Sunday schools to open meetings three meetings and the only time that we weren't allowed to go to those meetings we'll when we were on holiday and then we were expected to go to the Salvation Army somewhere else. That was one of the rules that we followed. Do you remember the rule that said that. If you were involved in core activities then they came first before everything else. Lots of young people throughout the years probably still today today have that conflict between the activities that they're involved in the salvation army and then other activities that take place in school and other places. We had a rule about having family devotions every day around the table and saying up prayers before we went to bed. Some of US had rules that we didn't watch. TV TV on a Sunday ends up. If you follow that rule yes a few of you. Some people never went to the cinema or went to watch live sport. Some wouldn't go dancing. Obviously those suits their mini skirts in uniform. Probably not such a problem. I've lived with rules over the air. About what color socks have to wear uniform in fact I still have those rules today as an officer. I'm what kind of shoes were allowed to wear fien in Salvation Army music sections where there were rules about what color tights the ladies wore usually. Just the ladies and what type of back act carried and all those sorts of things and even today the soldiers covenant that we sign when become when we become Salvation Army soldiers. We sometimes are tempted to see as a set of rules to keep. But here's what I see. In Jesus's life he preached to ordinary people who had enough trouble making ends meet. They didn't have enough time or energy to pursue the laws of holy living that was demanded by their Jewish religion. Many in the crowds follow. Jesus were crippled and disabled. Some of them had lifestyles which were well somewhat less than wholly and you think it's strange how Jesus spent so how much time with the Publicans on the tax collectors and the prostitutes the people that Jesus spent time with we're rule breakers not rule keepers. And yet somehow they were the ones in which Jesus placed the most hope he came saying the Kingdom of God for such as them. The Kingdom of God was open to those who believe in Jesus but closed to those who placed their confidence and security in keeping the religious rules. Now before you start writing your emails and your letters to the divisional commander. Let's just say that I'm preaching salvation. Heresy I'm not suggesting that living out the Christian life in a dedicated and disciplined way isn't good for us because after all the Publicans and the tax and the prostitutes and everybody else Jesus met had transformed lives because they met Jesus us their lives were different after they met. Jesus just think about Jesus story of the Prodigal Son who was forgiven so that he could start all living like the child of God that he wants all the adulterous woman. He was forgiven not so that she could continue in her adultery but so that she he could live a totally new and different life. Perhaps the greatest example of this transformation is poor the chief of sinners as he called himself. Alf was justified by God's grace so that he wouldn't fall back into the sin of of spiritual legalism that he'd indulged in until Jesus on that. Damascus wrote it is a real temptation to reduce the holy living to a set of rules after all an army stopped rules. Doesn't it but you know all of those rules off sacred. Let me just take one. There are times when we hold up uniform wearing as a sacred rule so just should wear it on if one soldier turns up without on will then actually means there's something wrong with them and something wrong with their spiritual temperature except that when you think about it. There are officers and than soldiers who've used the uniform distraction from their unhealthy lifestyle. Suddenly the rule doesn't make much sense. I'm sure you haven't but I've met uniform. Salvation exists with hearts of stone. Doesn't matter about the uniform they wear then and I have to confess for myself. There have been times when I've been guilty of following all the rules of being a good salvation. s whatever that means whilst being aware that my relationship with God was totally less than ideal so hardly in a season about uniform. Although women proudly on holy living is not about the rules that we is easier to live holy life if we have some discipline that makes exit concrete. Only living isn't about wearing ourselves into the ground three service in order to prove how good we all to God into other people people will is a call to be fruitful so we have to ask ourselves in all of this then. What is holiness? What does it mean to live the holy life to live a life of holiness? I believe this passage from John. Twenty onto one can help us and listen to fill now. She reads versus fifteen to twenty five.

"If nations chapter four commencing Verse Twenty Five therefore each of you must put off false hurt and speak truthfully from the to his neighbor for we are all members of one Balti- annual anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go done while you are still angry and do not give the devil told he who has been stealing. My must steel no longer but must work doing something useful with his own hands that he may have something to share. Share with those in neat. Do not let any on wholesome talk. Come out of your mouths but Tony. What is helpful? Four building up this up. According to their needs that it may benefit those who listen and do not grieve the holy early spirit of God with whom were sealed for the day of freedom should get rid of all bitterness rage and anger got rolling slant along with every form of malice be kind and compassionate to one another forgiving each other just as in in Christ gold forgave you be imitators of God therefore still children and live a life of love just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God amon. Thank you have a look at those versus in your Bible if you have it be great if you did. have it. Be Good if we were looking at. God's Word together have look those verses. What do they look like doc? I glance they might look like a set of rules. There's a whole list of things that you shouldn't do and then a whole list of things that you should do instead but it's not really a set of rules because has the key comes in the two versus before the passage that we started reading versus twenty three and twenty four visions chapter four. You'll find those in your message. Notes Paul says put off your old self which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful rule desires and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds. The key to this passage is that believers arte put put off the old self that to strip away the old self so that God can give them their new self. We go from the old self to the new self when we're baptized by the Holy Spirit. That's really what we talk about. That's what we really signify on symbolize. His when we put on our Salvation Army Uniform House ovation. I'm a uniform is useful in lots of ways but the biggest thing is that they they are a symbol of the fact that we've taken off our old lives we've stripped off our old lives and we have put on our new life baptized by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit kills off our old self and raises us us with Christ into the new life when we are baptized by the Holy Spirit we are reborn by the Holy Spirit Parrot. We renounce the forces of darkness and we embrace the Kingdom of light the habits of our old self no longer have control over us because we've stripped off and we've put on our new life. The Holy Spirit empowers us to resist the evil powers. How is of the world and gives us the motivation to put our whole trust in Jesus Grace and love? So can you see now that this passage is not a set of rules to follow things that you shouldn't do and things that you should do. It's not like the cub scouts or the brownies where we get a merit badge whenever we take one of these off. I'm not I'm not talking any me falsehoods anymore. Tick speaking truth with my neighbor tick. I'm not angry angry. I don't let the sun go down on my anger. Take haven't given an opportunity to the devil take. It's not that kind. Aww List living the holy life is not like collecting merit badges as a as a scout or Brownie and by the way since we're in a salvation army meeting can I just say the soldiers covenant is just the same the soldiers covenant is not a titlist list of rules to follow things to do when things not today and I say that because in my interactions with salvation is here in this core and elsewhere in the salvation army world. It seems that sometimes. That's what we reduce the soldiers covenant to another set of rules and regulations to follow. It isn't both this passage in a Fijian's and our soldiers covenant marks of the new life given to us when we're baptized by honey spirit when we take off our old selves and we put on new selves. God puts this way baptized by the Holy Spirit. Then this passage and our soldiers covenant is what our lives begin to look like. We're a new creation if we're a new creation than we cannot go back back to being our old self. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not some kind of make ova paper over the cracks and hope that things will last. It's replacing one old self with a completely new self. The old all self is cast away and we focus on new life instead of turning back to the ways of death so so Paul says in this passage that when God gives us new life if we told lies in our old self the now we tell the truth if we had a tendency to be angry in our old life well then now we seek the peace of God's not as a take list to put because that's a mark of the new life that God has given us if we're a thief than we stop stealing and we look at ways of sharing doing what we have with those around some working honestly with our hands if our talk is unwholesome in our old self than when we take that often we strip off allow God to put new life into us then we start encouraging people and so on. This is what this passage is about. It's not list. It's the way life begins to look when we're baptized by the Holy Spirit and God gives us. He's new life. So what's our part in this hour. These verse one of Chapter Five Life if you want to memorize some scripture this week then this might be the verse to memorize. It's only one two three four five six seven eight words long. That's quite good for memorization. I think Paul says therefore be imitators of God as beloved children. That's our part therefore be imitators of gold is beloved children say with May therefore be imitators of God as beloved children therefore be imitators of God as beloved children like the small child in our video learns the way of life by imitating his parent so we learn Holy Life by imitating being got and we imitate God by simply following his example in his son. Jesus Christ on emulating his character in our lives. How many times have we send in the words of John Gallons down there in your message notes? I'm from southern number. Three hundred twenty eight to be like Jesus. This hope possesses me in every thought and cree undead. This is my aim my creed to be like Jesus. This hope possesses me his spirit helping me lie a came. I'll be. I'm afraid to sermon isn't rocket signs. Just take those middle lines if each and every one of us really really allowed going to grow in us that we could say in every thought and this is my aim mike create then we would be like Jesus that's just logic his net. It's not rocket science. It's logic in every thought. Indeed this is my a Mike creed to be like. Jesus if that was really what we wanted to do then we would be like Jesus. A disciple of Jesus longs to live the holy life. He or she is a student fully committed to imitating tasting their teacher. We read about Jesus in the Bible. Not Justin Oh more about him but in order to imitate him. I'm because of our relationship with God through Jesus Christ and the power given to us by the Holy Spirit we become godly characteristics An obedient cycles. In the way relief later we read about Jesus unlearn his example. But we also read each other. Have you noticed that we also so read each other you see. It's not enough to read about Jesus in the Bible and seek to put and then seek to put his example into practice because if we think about the analogy of the young child.

"If you'd like to turn to the evening's main passage we're looking at a Fijian's chapter four Fijian's chapter four starting at Verse Twenty Five and we're going into chapter five in verse two if you're using one of our bibles on page eleven. Seventy six eleven seventy six fees in chapter four verses twenty five to trump to five I to pray together. Jesus we come together this evening as a people who declare corporately and individually you load on. We declare our willingness US and wish and desire to live a harley life. We ask that through through the words that you will speak to us this evening. You will help us to live that hardy life better day by day so that we become more and more like you and we all sees praising your name so over the last few few weeks when I've been here we've been thinking I've said about this. This early Christian Dogma this early Christian creed this early Christian expression of faith. Jesus is Lord. And we've been thinking about what that means when Christians and salvation EST say Jesus this is Lord. What we reminded ourselves in? The past few weeks is that there isn't just a belief we don't just say we believe that Jesus is Lord but that in in saying Jesus is Lord that lives that brings us to a particular way of life that our lives say. Jesus is Lord and the way that we live day by day it means a life of obedience and surrender to him a holy life a life of holiness sinus and so our Salvation Army's tenth article of faith or doctrines. If you look at a message notes if you picked up on the way this evening say we believe that. It the privilege of all believers to be holy sanctified and their whole spirit soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord. Jesus as Christ what does that doctrine. Meanwhile does that article of faith mean well not is first of all that it says that it is the privilege of all believers leave us not of some believers but all believers and so all believers are called to be holy a sanctified and that their whole spirit soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord. Jesus Christ it says it's a privilege privilege but it's not privileged in the sense of. We often say society that there are some privileged people who are rich and have been given everything in life and then there are some that are not privileged when we talk about privilege in this article of faith we mean but it is a free the an undeserved gift from God. That's what it means to be a privilege. So we don't mean that there are some holy Christians and some unholy Christian questions. You don't believe in unholy Christians. Do you know if you're a Christian. Then it is the privilege of all believers of Air Free Christian to be holy to live the holy life. It's clear through his teaching and three poles else teaching as well. Look this evening that Jesus really intends to make every believer a radical follower that we should be his holy people holy living was always the plan. It wasn't just about getting people saved wasn't just about Out Jesus dying on the Cross to save us but that we should live a holy life afterwards so we need to know if that was always a plan what is is it. What is hardly living? Well it's to be like got holy. Living is to be like God now. I could leave the sermon here and we can say yes. We all agree with that and that would be fun. We could all go home. I'm not going to living a holy life means to be like God to imitate Gods. Now have you ever noticed how children imitate adults. Yes those of your parents will have noticed how children imitate adults. It's a way of learning in fact. Probably the main way that they learn just as a reminder have a look at a screen three.

Friend the dearest and best we pray for the power for the courage of your Holy Spirit to on so in that way to be sold out on to you to surrender the dearest and best and to be able to say the the Jesus really is a lot of our life individually and corporately as a body of your people and so we pray these in your name and we hope you have been encouraged him challenge which by this message. "Thank you any. So shall we say. Shall we get the controversy out of the way I do notice. There's a controversy in this passage. Anybody faith without deeds yes so whole says actually. It's mother works that save you. It's not the deeds that save you. It's only faith that saves you. And that's what we follow as Protestant Evangelical Christian. So if you look at the first burst in your outline Romans Three Twenty eight Paul says for we maintain that a person is justified by faith. Apart from the works of the the law. In other words you'll save by faith not by works in Galatian strapped to to sixteen. That's the next verse in your outline. Paul says yet. We know that a person is justified. Fide not by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ and we have come to believe in Christ Jesus so that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by doing the works of the law because no one will be justified by the works of the law. So did Paul and James Contradict each other. Well let's have a look at the context first of all. They were confronting different issues. So Paul in his letters was confronting false teachers. Those false most teachers would take teaching networks in particular things like being circumcised and observing Jewish ceremonial laws. They were all necessary for salvation vice. You couldn't be saved. You couldn't belong to God unless you went through those ceremonial laws. James is is arguing. Something different he's arguing with those who believe that simply agreeing with the Gospel in other words. Having a kind of intellectual faith in their minds was enough to obtain salvation. There's also a difference in the timeframe of the believer's faith journey. Paul is talking about salvation -ation right at the beginning of the Christian journey and he's saying no one at this point at the beginning of the Christian journey no one can ever earn God's forgiveness and salvation. It's a gift. We were thinking about not over Easter when we saw Vatian is gift. It's a gift of grace and we obtain Tena through faith not through works. All we can do is to accepted James Speaking to Christians who are further along that journey mature Christian believers those who already accepted that gift of forgiveness and salvation and he is saying in essence for well them they must live a new life if through faith they have obtained salvation and the gift of forgiveness and salvation. Then it must look like a different different life as mature believers. James isn't saying that works. Have to be added did to faith but that genuine faith includes works. So that's a controversy out of the way now we can focus on what James wants to say to us this evening. Kiva is not verse. Seventeen James says so with faith if it does not lead to action it is in itself lifeless thing faith if it does not lead to action is in itself a lifeless thing now among many Christians today they say. Do you know the days have gone now for preaching. That's black and white. We need it to be a little bit more gray. We needed to be a little bit more nuanced well. James clearly didn't believe in that because we have this stark warning here. It's black and white. It simply believing in God is not enough. Can't get much more black and white and that Kenny simply believing in God is not enough conviction and intellectual belief kind of a belief in our minds that refuses to obey Christ comes is lifeless date again. There's this quite black and white isn't it isn't it. You're either alive or dead. Sometimes we might feel between but honestly either alive over it. How do we know that our faith is the real thing? How do we know that our faith is alive and not dead because it does what it says on? The Tin Action is the fruit of living faith. If we don't respond to others needs if we don't respond to those social issues that we thought about a few minutes ago then whatever faith eighth we possess is dead black and white. It's dead just in case we don't get not James. Has This hypothetical example for us to go through in verses fifteen to sixteen suppose brother or sister is in ranks with not enough food. For the day I'm unwanted says well good luck to you keep yourselves warm and have plenty to eat but does nothing to supply their bodily needs. What is the good of that? And what are we all say to dot. It's no good a toll. That's quite straightforward. Isn't it really. James Raises is hypothetical socialist. You have his day and I'm sure that there were people who are actually in that kind of situation and simply asks what would we do. What would we do? Would we really see someone in rags and with no food for the day and simply say well good luck to you keep yourself warm and have plenty to eat. Well if so then our faith is nothing but empty words because those words mean nothing. It's certify inadequate isn't it to say to someone on him not situation. Well Good luck to you. Keep yourself warm and I hope you're okay. It doesn't work because nothing changes now. We might actually actually be really sincere. And those words that we say it's not that we dismiss them and say we're good luck to you. We might actually mean keep yourself look after yourself goes well words might be well many but nothing altars in the end. I'm that's why James says our faith is date because nothing changes something more than simply talk is required if however we see see someone in ranks and with no food for the day and our faith stirs Stark Shen if we find them some warm clothes to wear or we find them shelter or something thing warm and comforting tweet actions. Confirm that our faith is alive. It's the real thing because it's doing. What exactly what it says on the tin gene our faith changes the situation? I'm that's what shows that our faith is alive. Now this is in the Salvation Army's DNA. I'm preaching to the converted tonight. Salvation is believe this. Don't worry yes good about twenty of you. That's pretty good. William Booth said you cannot warm. The heart of hearts people with God's love if they have an empty stomach uncalled feet. He got it. He got those words from James. He realized that real faith real faith makes a real difference in human life and it was his belief and good works as the fruit of faith that led us to set up homeless hostels soup kitchens match factories freeze job clubs all sorts of different things many of which still going on today need oriented evangelism. Him as the phrase goes is still one of the strengths of the army. Today God continues to call us to share God's love in ways that are relevant to the needs of those around us we are called as the Salvation Army. We cold basingstoke core. We are cold. As individuals individuals salvation exists to meet the relational material emotional and spiritual needs of those op community. Who Most need it so the question tonight? It's quite easy isn't it. Is our faith the real thing does our faith say exactly what it does exactly what it says on. How are we using our spiritual gifts? Our energy we are experiencing our contacts and a time on material goods to meet the felt needs of the people of basingstoke or do we have to admit admit to ourselves that actually we quite content to wish them well and hope they find the help that they need so if we want our call to grow then it's the job of every believer here to ensure that their faith does what it says on the team. There are people in the world out there who need you they need me May need Christ. Will you ensure that yours is a fighting faith.
