"Everyone i'm here with brad stone. I think many of our listeners will know who brat is longtime bloomberg journalist and editor also author of now two books about jeff bezos and amazon brat. Great to have you thank you. Jason longtime recode reader and follower of your work and admire of your work. I feel like the fraternity of of people who know how insanely difficult. It is to crack this company and tell their story is small and so it's really a delight to talk to you And someone who's read the book and understands the company. I appreciate that and yes. This can be a pseudo therapy session as well but We'll start with you so you have a book. It's called amazon unbound. Jeff bezos and the invention of global empire This is sort of the sequel to the everything store which you originally wrote. What were you setting out to do with this. What i sent out to do was to update my history. I had i was proud of the everything store. The everything store continued to kind of resonate. I learned that you know it was. It was a value book for people who were at amazon or in ecommerce or thinking about joining amazon. But it just as the years went by came to be sort of woefully out of date. I mean there was alexa. And there was the expansion into india and there was hollywood and the globalization of the marketplace and the transportation network that they were building and and that was just the beginning when i set out in two thousand seventeen to go okay. I'm going to write another installment of the of the construction of this empire and then there is the whole evolution of a man named jeff bezos bright and the biggest challenge in the biggest the biggest question i had was. How does it all fit together. You know how does one company you know with a couple of hundred thousand employees now over a million you know do so many different things and and and is it linear and and if not how would you organize it into a narrative and the specific questions i had were. How does a company really an online retailer and cloud services company. Come out of nowhere to leapfrog. Google and microsoft and apple in the race to build a kind of artificial intelligence or voice activated computer. So how does alexa happen.

Joe rogan did. Yeah armchair expert. I think we can be armchair expert. Can't we couldn't armchair quarterbacking wondering owned by. Amazon is going to join apple podcast subscription. They're going to expand that into a longer show and put that on apple. Podcasts exclusive or subscriptions site. It's gonna be interesting to watch how this plays out. Hands on With Apple's AirTags

"Either listeners. It's brett molina. And i'm mike schneider and welcome back to talking tech. Add one more device to apple's growing roster and it might come in handy if you tend to lose your stuff yeah. Recently apple released its airtags which is a tiny device. Similar to tile or samsung's galaxy smart tags. It's about the size of a game piece from the game checkers and what it'll do is help you track your keys wallet anything else that you're worried about losing each airtags cost twenty nine dollars or you can get a four pack on apple's website or retailers for ninety nine dollars you can also purchase a variety of different holders and key rings the range between thirteen dollars to around forty I have been testing them out for a little while. Now and i've tried them on a couple of different items. Try them on a backpack. I've tried them on my keys. i also tried them on a stuffed bunny in our household name buttons who is a treasure here and often gets lost The setup for this is pretty straightforward. You know you put a little plastic tab on the back that activates the airtags. You'll then get a prompt on your phone to connect then you'll go in and label what this airtags connected to see a lot of different options. It can be your keys your wallet. Your bag whatever. It is And when she pick that you're good to go so if you do lose your keys or you lose buttons and buttons and keys actually have an airtight equipped. How do you find so the cool. Addition they have here is This option call precision finding so iphones have the find my app. Which is what we use to locate our iphone or whatever devices we have connected to our accounts but with precision. Finding you'll go to a section that is for items and once you've reached a certain distance from the item. You'll notice on fine. My it'll shift from directions to find and what it'll do is that there will be a green display the pops up see an arrow. And it'll show you the approximate distance. You're away from your item. So and it's weird because it's kind of like you're playing that hot or cold game In the way it works is as you move through and get closer. Your iphone will start buzzing really lightly and then it gets stronger and stronger the closer you get

Google Plans to Automatically Enroll Users in Two-Factor Authentication

"World password day every day l. day to it. I had no idea global password day. Yeah hey what passwords. You are great security tools but Kind of feeling like you know more and more people are thinking. Maybe there's a better way. But there's a better solution. I know i have two factor authentication activated on my most important google being one of them and google is using this day to spread the message that everybody get on the two factor authentication train They're going to be so first of all they're going to be prompting everybody to activate which is okay. Great find you you get a little message on your phone says hey turn onto actress indication. Here's why it's awesome. Here's why you need it and everything that's step one. Eventually they're going to be google's going to be requiring its users with smartphones Tied to their accounts to use two factor authentication or at least they're gonna opt to them in which i think is a really big step. It's gonna automatically enroll users if their accounts are set up properly meaning that they have a smartphone that's tied to the account that's has verified number that sort of thing And i'm really curious about this because no question pal. Passwords are are super flawed security tools. They've been around forever. They've served a purpose. But even google says sixty. "App store search results. Just got a bit more crowded with stuff. You're not searching for bloomberg. Which will pop up at the top of the suggested absolutist. Previously developers could bid for an ad for specific terms within the search results themselves. Hence my is has conundrum. Sounds like they've gone ahead and pitched it to developers to. I've not seen that turned up yet. In the app store on my iphone in pitching it to developers apple says millions of users visit the app store. Search tab every day to find download their next app with search tab ads. Should You Outsource Customer Support?

"Support and customer. Service is really the backbone of your company. It's how your customers will interact with your business whether they're asking for some support on how to use your product or service a billion corey or they're looking to upgrade. They're gonna most likely contact somebody on your support team to get that done so in a lot of ways. They're the gatekeepers. They're the front line soldiers of your team. Many people will go to a ppo company in just hire that service. they'll say. hey. I need customer support. I x amount of emails every day. Can you get somebody to take care of my support email or support chat or whatever it is or phone calls and based on your volume this company will like hey problem and they have a team of customer support agents that will take care of your support and your customers now. How does this work well. Most of these companies won't have a dedicated person. You probably can request but a lot of times the agents working on your business and with your customers will also help other businesses with their customers and from the customer's point of view. They're pretty much just talking to somebody. That represents your business. They don't know that. You're outsourcing it now very large companies do this like telecom companies like. At and t and verizon large companies like apple and microsoft and the reason why they do this is that they just can't hire that fast they can't find the talent because they need so many people when the iphone launches they literally thousands of queries a minute thousands of questions in their support bank in their support a portal so they really need as many people. They can't hire so many people at one shot so they go to a company like this. Now if you're a small company is there any advantage to this well a lot of times. It's cost effective especially on volumes of severe example. They say we will take care of all your customer support and they give you a flat fee now. of course you're still gonna need provide some training materials and Information about your product or service in the rules For your product and refunds. And all that kind of stuff. So that support agent knows how to answer those questions but at the end of the day they work for the company that you are paying not you directly

Apple vs Epic with John Gruber

"John gruber. Welcome back It's good to be here peter. Thanks for coming. Thanks for making time. We're not gonna take a lot of time. But i wanted to check in with you about the epic apple case in the trial recording this on wednesday. So we're we're two and a half days into the trial i assume you following it closely I noticed you not a lot of coverage during fire. Also i figured go straight to the source and you have to type anything. You can just talk. You know it is easier to talk about especially at this point I am following. But i am not following hour by hour. It just does. That just doesn't seem like good use of my time. i mean so. I'm trying to get the daily updates and i'm looking at. I mean obviously the big juicy part that's coming out of this are the emails that come out through What's the process called. Whatever you know being entered and coverings. Yeah yeah a little bit of a smaller at all. This stuff was uploaded into the court system last week. So if you wanted to you could have gotten all this last week But no one wants wants to actually go thrilla before we go into the particulars of of what we've heard because we can't see We've been we've been listening to these calls and looking at documents Let's just talk about the case. Rodley i think anyone who's listening to this show understands the broad outlines right this epic arguing the administration monopolist Because of the way they run the app store you are someone. I i often think of referred to as an apple enthusiast so i would think you are mostly sympathetic to apple in this case but i think also you have been increasingly critical about the way apple runs the app store for the last few years so before we get to the specifics of epic and apple. What's your overall. take on the way. Apple runs the store. And and what you'd like to see from them. You thought you said it was going to be a short show. I i would. I think it's useful to break this down. I took a note. I wrote before coming on the show. What exactly is epic asking for. And i know you're asking me my take on the apple store but i kind of feel like epochs suit is a good prism to break a very broad range of complaints out into some discrete ideas.

From Working on Oil Fields to Passively Investing in Real Estate with Travis Watts

"Traffic's for people that don't know what the differences between passive and active investing brigadier. What does it mean to be a passive investor. Sure i would define that as not having an active role in the actual business of what it is. You're investing in so for example. Let's say you buy a stock you buy. I dunno apple stock. you're not the ceo. You're not an engineer. At apple year in no way shape or form actually impacting the business yourself individually or having to work or exchange for money. You're a passive investor. You just owning a fractional share of that company and being hands off in the process in the sharing in the profits and success of the company. Same thing could be related to real estate. I invest in real estate syndications or real estate. Private placements were another team. Is out there finding the deal. Running the operations finding the property management finding the contractors. I'm just a passive investor in the deal giving him some money to help that be successful in sharing in the profits. Not having to do all of that on my own. Like i used to do. I think that everyone can see. That travis is not a rookie anymore. He is a pro at this. And that's why we brought him on as we want to give you guys some insight some knowledge as to where you can be where you can go with your real estate. Investing in travis's really gonna kind of break down. What he does and how he has made a passive for him so travis what was that first mindset shift. Were you decided. I don't want to be hands on. I don't wanna be active anymore. And i wanna go towards the passive side. Yeah that's kind of funny story. So at first i just thought to things i need to make as much income as i can make so that i can start investing in the number two. I thought i can do it all myself. I don't know why. I thought that that was so naive of me but i just wanted to bounce it and i just thought i can flip a house. I can run a vacation. i can manage tenants. I can do all this without really having the backing to support

Concerts Are the Best Kind of Medical Experiments

"Without herd immunity society is bound to start reopening so over in the uk researches trying to figure out what kind of events people can go to without causing the virus to stop spreading out of control again and the way they are trying to figure it out just maybe the greatest science experiment of all time live. Music is starting to make a comeback as a way to track krona virus progress. The english city of liverpool hosted a one off music festival yesterday to test whether such events spread the virus about five thousand people ditched face coverings and social distancing rules to attend outdoor event. And they just had to test negative for covert i and agree to follow up. Tests and five days data from the festival will be used by the governments of research program to help understand the effects of crowds on the spread of the virus. And the festival's organizers says. He hopes the project will help get outdoor events back on the calendar this year all year a concert. That's my kind of medical experiment of louis. Pasteur in bullshit with a dog. The best part of it is no one court covert but sadly one hundred people did. Come down with indian. But that's right. Thousands of people showed up to a concert and the purpose was to see see if they would catch covert which must be honest. Doesn't seem like a real idea right. That seems like some are ruled that happened. You can get it right fire and if you ask me i think an experimental concert is a great idea. Not just for covert. I mean you can test for all sorts of things you can test for the effect of constantly dropping. The beats can finally find out. Does that hurt. Apple AirTags Already Have a Major Design Issue

"Some interesting stuff. Going on with the apple airtags. They were announced last week And we talked a little bit about him last week app. This is something that apple delayed putting out for some time the They were gonna put him out well at least they They released accidentally released accidentally a video a year ago. More than a year ago last I think it was last april. Maybe it was earlier Announcing or showing or demonstrating the airtags. But then they didn't do it. They didn't do it and so we figured something's going on. maybe they. Maybe they can't make them fast enough. Maybe there's a bug where there's a suffer issue. Something's going on. Finally a year later they release them and in fact the the first order was last week. I still haven't got him. It's one of the the apple does is it drives me crazy. I ordered the holders. You know seek input on my keychain low key holder stuff like that and i got all excited. I saw from apple's coming on friday. I thought they weren't coming until may it was the holders you got. You know the iphone case always comes before the iphone. So i have a key key chain but i don't have the airtags now. I'm thinking maybe there is a good reason. The airtags were delayed because one of the things that comes up with. These things is the notion that you know you might a bad guy might slip them in. Somebody's purse or backpack or pocket without their knowing and use it to stalk you you know to follow you around

"Have it on my i full tv uh fourthgeneration uh and uh if they can do it that way i can play more music from food for it that way by yeah do they do they do that now you bowl they don't do that now but the plan is for you to be able to take to home pods and play um and stereo and connect them to your apple tv and play those play those songs the functionality is not there yet but apple teased it when they first announced the home pods it'll be a software update and it will happen so that your dream i think it was elton your dream is coming true whenever apple decides release it he also in the in when he before he said home potties at home pat i thought those kinda cool home pad apple needs come up with a new product called the home pad emissaries microfinance my whole pat ashes like a whole a whole house napa sells it apple house the hope that all right here we go is another one this was short hey liquor peacock here we're up to your podcast whole the time maybe you could do some checking out didn't have any plans a making a new version of the ipod touch i know nothing is being said about that maybe you can do some checking that out and i look forward for that and you're next extra crunchy podcast thanks you know what i really think so first of all right we know apples baseley gotten out of the ipod touch business army starting to the ipod business but i think what's really happening more and more is that people are ending up using their old phones and turning them into ipod touch is like apples not using them anymore and these products are still more than good enough to do games surf the web and so more than anything i think you're are old phones are becoming ipod touch is that our hand down to like kids or what not um and that's what's happening on and quite honestly people there is like a really like there's a group of people that really want this but i think just know went to hand down your phone and give it to your kids are significant others that one and ipod touch and and that's really what it is.

"I've said that you can i don't even know what episode it wasn't last week guys yeah i think we're even talking about there was like some eyeglass demo that that we were showing others look a little video you know now there's other stuff out there and and reality thing they have all the pieces in place in they can make it looks stylish enough they made the apple watch looks stylish whether or not you liked the fact that it has a round face or not so the new operating system owes go ahead yeah i was just going to echo you and say it definitely has to be stylish because the the the vr headsets that we're seeing now unlike the google glass they just look ridiculous and people just laugh at them you know when they see him garner so if if apple could do something that's augmented reality glasses but make them look like a cool pair of sunglasses or something you know then they win you know what i mean like if it's like a pair ray bans or something uh than they win that holes they'll they'll win that whole uh scene you know the the big issue according to the report that apple is having is creating their own head said with a builtin display that can also stream 3d video without draining its battery it's obviously a lot of components here working together that makes it complicated i don't wish this on any one of the that out now a couple of quotes just to see were apples brain is at cook in our interview with the independent recently said anything you would see on the market any time soon would not be something in any of us would be satisfied with so he's kind of talking about the overall market like look apple knows what they want to do but they're not it's not there yet.

"The apple watches a great example to me i bought the first apple watch knowing it wasn't the greatest thing i i wanted to review it i wanted to have it in have my own experiences with it but now the apple wash in its third generation with the new watch os four with a new internal that make it speedier and quite honestly the elti e for someone like me who works out in wants to have access to everything but not be fully connected with the phone the apple watched series three elti is legit like i love it that's good and i didn't i didn't love my apple watch before after two generations but now i'm turnaround man you've definitely turnaround on apple watch since the lama show love on the products good rate when it's so i think that that's a good sign that each maybe find it takes them a little longer to get there we i want them to come out with dope stuff i wish they came out the amazon echo quite honestly hurts they should at least kinda did with syria i mean they were the first to have like a you know a personal assistant were talking to guess but it's not it's not doing with the echoes doing hate getting back to the the aar headset when the is going to succeed the iphone would what does that mean it's going to be like like a accessory to the iphone or it's that sounds to me like well the title yet the titles a little tricky but i think what they're just trying to say is they're next breakthrough product right that will six like we had iphone we had ipad what is the next big apple pie i think people should listen to our show even as far back as two three years ago or i've always said look i'm not trying to be msrp future predictor but if there is any product that could be the next breakthrough product for apple it would be a pair of glasses oh yeah yeah.
