Using Stories to Market Your Business with Amy Porterfield

"Hey is this happened in your business. Last month was a bad month so this month. We're going to run a sale. A big promotion. We're gonna email list and say by now because it. We gotta get some cash in the door. It's not really a marketing plan. You know what that's called. It's called spray and pray from the ramsey network. This is the entreleadership podcast where we help business. Leaders themselves their teams and the prophets. I'm your host daniel tardy and my guest today. is amy porterfield. She's a longtime friend of entreleadership. She's also an online marketing expert to helping entrepreneurs and small business owners win. Aim is going to share with you. Why you have to have a plan for your marketing and the good news is it doesn't have to be complicated in fact the foundation it simple because marketing starts with just telling people's stories so when you tell the story especially about somebody else that you served and you've helped when you tell the story right meaning you talk about the struggles and the challenges in the fears that they had the winds and what that meant for them and what they've overcome people can see themselves in those stories so much easier than you. Just saying i've got this great product. It has amazing benefits in features. You need it. That's one thing but also when you sell when you promote no matter how much your audience loves you. They put up a wall whether it be just a little while or really big wall. There's always a little defense up there and we're going to talk about it later. But i do webinars to sell my digital courses and on a webinar for the first forty five minutes you are giving giving giving and so when you do ask for them to buy your product. Their defenses are all the way up. Because you were giving and you were inviting them in in different ways in offering value so the same thing with the story when people see themselves in other people's stories and they can relate and resonate. They those defenses. Come down and they say i want a piece of that i if she could do it i can do it too and so i'm all about helping. People put their guard down. Because it's a natural thing to put it up especially when you're asking someone to spend money so i noticed you said when you tell the story right. Yeah what's the right way to tell the story. Well you had talked about donald miller when we were off camera and you had mentioned and you know that man is have learned so much from story brand in how he tells his story but if you can tell the story and somebody can literally put themselves in that story because they can relate to it. I feel as though the story is is doing the work it was meant to do. And so to me. You have to have all those important elements that donald miller talks about in terms of putting a story together in order for it to resonate and a lot of my students who are just getting started though one and tell the story but with a one tells i hope so and so get x. Results they were this way. I and now. They're this way now like there before and after and done. But when i when i think about telling a good story i want to talk about the richness of it and i have a student. Her name is niro. she lives in los angeles. She's a single mom of three. Her mom lives with her. She was a not making barely any money as a baker and she knew she wanted a different life for her kids and she was working two jobs. One like chucky cheese and one baking out of her kitchen but then she realized how to create a digital course and she created her first digital course to create caramel candy apples. Who would have thought that a caramel candy apple. Digital course how to do it would be a huge success but she made over sixty thousand dollars on her first launch and then she did it again had the same success and when i asked her deniro what does this mean for you and she said all i wanna do is retire. My mom she cleans houses. She's she supported me. She is an amazing support to our family. I want to help her retire when when she told me that like my heart. Don't been but when i tell that story i don't just say how much deniro made in. What digital course she created. But i talk about what it means to her. And i think people can relate to that part of the story more than anything Yeah i mean just as you tell that story. I think everybody's going whoa caramel apples. And how could either something similar and caramel apples. That i'm going to sell an what did you do again. What did you teach on that web and like it just it pulls you win when you tell a story like that. So what What keeps us from telling the stories you know. I think we probably cognitively most business owners that have been around for a few years. Understand the power of story to some degree. I i know some of a struggle with feeling like we're wasting our audiences time or were belaboring things or it's not worth it. Why do we hesitate when it comes to this powerful mechanism you know. I can totally relate. When i first started telling stories. I would rush through him so quickly because i thought i was wasting. My audience is time like they wanted me to get to get to the point. And i i often Surround myself with a great storyteller. Because i love a good story and if you really think about your let's say you're out with some friends you're sitting around a fire and you all are just having a good time in someone tells a story and the when they add more detail when they add more layers to it when they really pull you in. You're like tell me more i'm here. I'm fully there. So you love that when they add the details and they really bring it to life. So why would it be any different. When you're telling your audience these really rich stories versus rushing to the punch line. It's the same kind of feeling they get on a webinar or had a campfire. And so i realized i needed to slow down so i did the exact thing that most of my students do they want to rush through it because they think they should and so. That's one thing another part in and this is gonna sound silly. And i've never really talked about this but we had to make it a practice in our business to get the stories like if we didn't have a process in the company to get these stories in the most richest way possible with all the details. I wouldn't be able to tell the stories so backup a little bit. We put a process in place where people can send us in their wins their results their satisfaction with our product and then we reach out to them on zoom and Someone on my team will do an interview and just ask them tons of questions and record it and transcribe it and then we kind of bring it into a story while my team then gives me all the details of that story so what my point was going to be is that i had to practice these stories if i want to add layers and richness to a story on a webinar or in a facebook. Live or on a podcast. I need a practice at a little meaning. I can't look at a bunch of bullets until the story. Well

"To your core content and make adjustments which I'm actually going to talk about one big adjustment I made with my own core content so we'll get to that in step number five. All right. Let's dive in to step number one. Now, if you know me, you know I'm a pen and paper kind of girl. However, this is one area where I like to open up a Google doc and type out all of my ideas because then it's easier to go back and edit them. So is suggest you start typing out the main themes or focuses in your business? So here's some questions. What do you teach? What is the transformation you offer? What core steps does your audience have to take to achieve that transformation? What do you teach now? I suggest you lean heavily on any industry research you've done, and if you've done any ideal customer Avatar Work if you've done any course calls to validate your audience use that information as well. Here's a little hint ideal customer, Avatar. That's the content I've recently been reworking I'll get to that in step five. But basically, what I want you to do is think about anything you know about your. Audience what you've learned about them and then pull from your own knowledge, your skill, set your expertise. That's where you're starting here. Now, I mentioned course calls, which is basically where you start to learn even more about your audience. I didn't episode episode two eighty. You can get there by going to amy Porterfield DOT com forward slash two eighty or linked to it in the show notes but I did this episode with somebody who? Was Not yet a student of mine. Her name was Jamie troll and I did a course call live on my podcast. So you can hear how I interviewed her to learn more and more about what she needed, what she wanted in order to my own core content around how to create a digital course. Funny. Enough Jamie has become my star student. I. Mean She's crushing it and at the time of that recording she didn't. Even own my program Digital Course Academy. So it's it's kind of a fun episode to listen to. If now you know she's literally crushed more than two launches I. Think She's on to her third kind of call. Okay. Let's get back to step number one where you're going to identify these core themes. So to give you an example in my business I got clear on my overarching theme. So list building, digital course, creation, and six. Launching digital course using webinars from there. So I type out those categories and then I left space underneath each one of them to go back in break those overarching themes down into more bite size manageable pieces. So for example, some of my content broken down would include creating an irresistible lead magnet three profitable types of digital courses selecting a digital course topic the importance of live launches objections like I don't have time to create a digital course or the tech. Overwhelms me and the list could go on and on. These are all pieces of core content that helped me to support and educate my audience, and it helps them to cross over that invisible bridge because imagine if I created some core content around three profitable types of digital courses once they got clear on the type of course, they wanted to create. They'd be more willing and excited to join me on my Webinar all about how to create a.

"So we create these buckets that define. The actions people have taken on our digital platforms. So for example, I can create a custom audience of ood the people who've been to my website in the last one, hundred and eighty is, and by defining that custom audience, they become my warm audience. They are my custom audience of the people who visited my website that is an asset that you have that you wanNA. Make sure you keep from the very first moment you give facebook ads money because when you're ready to start running list building ads who are the first people you're going to target. The people who went to your website. So you want to make sure that you create custom audiences of the people who visited your website in the last one hundred and eighty days people who engaged with you on facebook in the last hundred and eighty days people who engaged with you on instagram and the last one hundred and eighty days and your email list. Those are the most. Important custom audiences so that when now that now that you have your engagement at running and you're working social media to start building your email list you you have all of those people engaging with you going into these custom audiences and when you're ready to start running list building ads, you can target them and they are most likely to opt in for your email list pretty fast. So. Good. Now tell me this. Do you have any success stories from students that can that you can share who have actually used this approach ya? So when we started this, we started doing this in the agency in around February March twenty eighteen very soon after the algorithm changed and we started with one client and she had about. Forty thousand followers on instagram and she's really good on instagram. She has a beautiful news feed. She speaks to her ideal customer when posts they comment they love it and so when the algorithm changed, she say she can't understand it but it's like it's like instagram has died on her. So we started doing this with her and within a month of doing it, she started telling us her engagement on instagram up her comments on. INSTAGRAM was. Up Her followers number was up, she even said she's seeing a rise in her podcast listenership and she said she's getting more siles from her shop in shopper fi which had nothing to do with us. We weren't running ads for that but that was the first moment we kind of realized Oh hang on. Wayne. We create engagement it kind of spills over into all of these other areas anywhere you have a digital platform or anywhere you. Or doing anything digitally when people engage with you on social media, they also quick to other things and they do other things and they listened to your podcast. So then we started doing it with earl of our clients and we stock standard do it with every single client and what we.

"Of something. So we've come up with about five different reels we started we just started. We've only one out, and what we do is we go into reels and we look at everybody else's reels. Someone who hasn't one and we literally copy it. We put our own stuck to it. We put our own swing to it but if they're using a certain type of music that has a beat that you could point to different places on the screen, we use the same song and we put our own stuff do it. That's where I think copying somebody else is not a big deal. It's all everyone's copying each other in my opinion with reels and Tiktok, and it's actually celebrated out in I actually. This is creativity. Nobody owns a night an idea. The fact that I had treated on talk it was how to turn your followers into customers or how you know like, and we went to a five step series and we had two characters on tiktok talking back to each other. I, probably had an people sent it to me they probably twenty people had said I need one for my business and then I go to their to talk and watch it and I loved it I thought it. was absolutely powerful amazing, and Stuart. So that's why you will see on Instagram and Tiktok people can actually insert audience. So just imagine you hear a clip of amy on her podcast and she says something that moves you something maybe perhaps it says like get out of your own way you are enough time has come. They can get that audio clip inserted into Tiktok and they can move their lips as if they themselves are saying if that is not the ultimate rip off, you've ever heard. No it is it's creative and it's awesome and people can link back to original talks as the source of inspiration. I just think it's really smart, and now we're creating synergistic creativity that drives our business forward all of that in all the ways So many good ideas an permission to copy other people in a way that it's totally okay. How good is that? Yeah, absolutely. Jazzy starry night, which is the name I think she should give herself but she won't take you so so much for being here I, love you to the moon and back, and this has been a value packed episodes. So thank you so much for your time. Are I love your guts? Thanks. See you soon. Bye Girl. So there you have it isn't you so much fun. I literally could talk to jasmine for hours and hours and hours anything about business in life and everything in between. So hopefully, you enjoyed this episode as much as I have and I'm actually recording this closing. After I interviewed Jasmine and really one day later. So within twenty four hours of doing this interview jasmine I learned a trick. So for all of you that have in g business account like I do I have a business account so I can track all the analytics all the likes, all the growth, all of that, and it helps me to easily run instagram ads. So if you also have a business account, you might have noticed and we mentioned this in the interview that you can't get music in your reels. And so at the time of this recording, so this is going to go live probably a month or so from now. But at the time of this recording I found this really cool worker. And in the show notes Amy Porterfield Dot com forward slash three, three seven my friend Brits Uva is going to show you an invisible button that gives you music on I. G reels for business accounts. I did say invisible button. How Weird is that? Right now I hope this changed by the time this goes live, but I'm going to link to Brit Sivas instagram real where she shows you the invisible button on business accounts To Get music, my mind was blown. So there are so many great things including Jasmine's step by step instagram reels tutorial. Am A link to her masterclass in the show notes. So I think this is the most action packed show notes. I've ever done amy Porterfield dot com forward slash three, three seven, go check it out. All right. I hope you have a wonderful day. I'll see same time same place next week. Bye for now..

"Would be helpful to you. Let me know I'm afraid. But I just want you all to know in the show notes of this episode. I. Am going to link to what Jasmine just talked about. So any PORTERFIELD DOT COM ford slash three, three seven, I will link to that exact video that jasmine just said because I want you see this inaction because it is very visual you do your best now but we're gonNA link to that video. Okay. So if we're looking at the real Page. Or Green screen and we walk through them again we walk at and how to find okay. So when you are on your homepage, you open up instagram and there you're looking at your feed the feed is the thing you traditionally squirrel through right. So when you're on that page in the upper left hand corner, you're going to click on camera That is going to bring you to if you look at the bottom center of a of your screen, you will see a white circle and below the white circle, you will see a word that says story you're going to swipe to the right and that's going to bring up real CZ. Yes. So those of you looking at this right here. Yes. So you will see almost like those movie theater clapper's like the timing rate so what you're going to look On the left side of the screen, you're going to see a music symbol. That is where you can go and choose a song. If you don't WanNa talk and let's say you just want to point to something or you want to have a voiceover. What you're going to do is you're just going to pick. A. Song. I. Hired. By panic. Listened Real. Fast shots. If, you have an ID business account like I do. You will not see the music google it. You can look at alternatives it's complicated, but you don't automatically get the music in a business account. So we had to do this whole work around get into that. Now, most of you do not have a business account so keep going. Yes at the point here anybody who's listening who says, no I really need the music. What you could do is you can use a video app something like video shop and you could record a fifteen second video and add music to it, and then you could upload that fifteen second clip into reels and then you add the text to it. So there are there are work around essentially what we're doing so. Okay. So then right below the music symbol, you're going to see almost like a little play button and that is going to give you the opportunity to record something. It's as one x you're recording it in real time or you can record it in. which speeds it up or you can record it in slow motion. Then you below that, you'll see a little happy face and those are called affects. That is where you can find filters. That's where you can bring up. You'll see at the bottom has changed is if you have downloaded any other filters for your instagram stories, those are going to appear. So I always like to have a skin smoothing for worse you know every every girl wants clashes filter. So brighten it up a bit, and then what you can do is right below that you're going to see a timer and that timer will empower you to set the amount of time that you actually want to record a clip. It is automatically defaulted when you hit it to five seconds. So let's say just similar how I used that example. Or the Boutique Care in Newport beach, they set the timer to three seconds. So what you would do, you get your slider from the automatically set five seconds and then he would change it down to three seconds and you're going to click the blue button that says set timer. You will hit set timer and Ben. What you'll do is you can have it you can hand hold it or you could set it on a tripod because when you and this is this is how people who don't have Khloe will actually make. Set It on a tripod, and if you don't have a tripod, it's okay I don't either you can just use a stack of books that's going to be fine. John. WHO said his stack of books on a table you stand away from the table and what you'll do once the timer is set is you're going to click on that circular white button and what it's going to do some count you down you get three seconds and then you get to record your three seconds to get the three second jumpstart. Now, if you want to record the second three, four, five seconds, you're, GonNa, you're going to click the timer again. and. Then you're GONNA be able to set it now let's say I just like the TC WanNa, do another three seconds while I'm going to go into my timer and I'm going to set it now from the re seconds to six seconds, and then I'm going to follow the process again and say set timer I'm going to click on the timer then I have three seconds to run back to where I need to be the cameras I'm going to record record record or three seconds. It's automatically in this stop at three. Now let's just say Oh you know what? I didn't like that take you're going to click on the Arrow that is next to the center circle icon. We're GONNA Click back else. Watch that. And it plays it back you. Can you can delete that clip if you'd like hitting the trash can icon and then we'll ask you do you want to discard it? You Click the scarred. And then you click done. So I, just walked you through the basics. Want we just the basics you got to hear. Do you agree in this is what Cohen I found. You gotta just get in there and play with it and you can pick it up pretty quickly when you play around with it. Yes and everything and I know that it's probably not riveting podcast content. Let me talk to the white to button to the left the time a fastball word it's like the worst. Years. Melting however I'm telling you it is a four minute video tutorials. This is the I'm actually a very project tonight. Can I brag please right as right now to change tomorrow but as of right now, the video that we created for the tutorial is the only video that has multiple camera angles where showcasing niece speaking behind the scenes actually screen recording my camera so I'm walking. People through the three seconds of how to do it. You're seeing me talk to the camera and you're actually seeing me woo the camera. So we're seeing multiple perspectives of people have a very, very holistic three sixty approach to accommodate really probably because there's a bunch of people who said, I'd never do a story excuse me I would never do a real and then they watched the. Video and they're just like real machines. Okay. Good. That makes me happy again, like I gotTa have a tutorial, I need to see it and once I do I can figure it out and I think that's what all of you will find valuable. So again, I will link you to it Amy Porterfield dot com slash three, three seven. You'll get to see that video and then of. Course you all know we want you to Dm us and let us know if you did your first real like we want to see this right? Right? Azman. Yes and actually how about we play a game? Okay. So you're giving prizes away I really liked you prizes. Oh, girl go have don't have put you on the spot away all your courses, an Amazon gift card that's good. What do you want to do a perfect idea if you're just like, I'm really not sure to begin. We'll I walked you through the timer component correct and then there's video tutorial that also walks you through the timer component and I always believe that you should be creating reels that position you as a thought leader as somebody who is innovative, who's competent as somebody who's a professional in their industry because you could create a real. About how you make your coffee at, it could be popular, but that isn't necessarily showcase who you are as an entrepreneur. What if you were to talk about the multiple things you do in Your Business? So you can pick out let's say four characters. So the first three seconds you're gonNA say, Hi, I'm import and Iran Amy Puerto Ache and then the next three seconds you have like a hat and glasses on and then you. Add text on the creative director and the next hat you're holding your own or like a computer like I'm the marketer and then change you put on like a big coat and then like.

Let's get into today's episode Go. Hey their friend. So as if we didn't have enough ways to post on Instagram, there's a new feature that was rolled out in early August twenty twenty. It's called instagram reels and I'm sure you've probably already heard about it and you've seen people use it or maybe you've been dabbling with it and maybe you've thought was the deal with this. How is it different from instagram stories and should I be using it for my business to grow my audience or is it a waste of time? These are all great questions and when my team and I started to see audience members posted about it and my facebook groups we knew we had to shed some light on it to do that I went to my girl, my favorite Jasmine Star, and here's the thing about Jasmine the girl always knows what's going on I mean from business strategy to photography. Now to newborn babies I mean she's got the four one one for. Sure. Now, she's not only going to answer the questions that we've seen pop up in our facebook groups, but she's also going to share a sneak peek into what our content calendar looks like for instagram and how to come up with some content topic ideas for your instagram reels. So you actually know what to do and you're not like I have zero ideas because this feels really awkward to me so you're going to walk away. Knowing what next action items you need to take an order to start embracing instagram reels if you choose to do so after this road now, what I'll tell you is I'm actually recording this intro after I interviewed Jasmine sometimes I do that I interviewed the guest and then it helps me to decide what I want to tell you in the intro and the closing. Little podcast trick for you but you podcasters probably already do with that way. So with that, here's what I'll say. When I interview Jasmine, we went over some step by step by step, and if you can take out your phone get into instagram when she's talking or it's really not gonNA. Make much sense. So I just want you to be really interactive for a portion of this interview. I, think it will make more sense for you if you can. So just a tip for you also in the closing, I'm going to give you one extra tip. That, we talked about in the episode. So make sure you pay attention till the very end and the final thing I'll say is that at the time of this recording I just recorded jasmine I have been creating reels maybe you've seen them online sense and believe me it's not the most comfortable thing I've done but I am glad I'm experimenting and after this episode, I, hope you experiment as well. All right. Let's go ahead and dive in. Well look. We have on the show. Welcome back. Jasmine Star I am so happy to be here. You have no idea. It's like let's The Band is back. Lucky. "Welcome them to the Jasmine Star. Show friends this. podcast is still very new. We are just about two months old. y'All and something I. He didn't expect when I started podcasting ways how freeing it was I feel so darn free to be one hundred percent of myself one hundred percent persson the time and I really you and I are just sitting here having a conversation. It's just US having a cuppa like. Did you know that that was the thing I was actually watching the BBC and they had a show. It's like I'm just enjoying a couple like CPA cuppa and they say cup. Like a cup of tea the way that we say out here sure. So let's just pretend you and I are in an episode of a BBC show and you and I having a COUPLA. I'm using an accent to kind of get me through what I am about talk about right now because sometimes I don't really talk about stuff and one of those those things that I don't know what he's talking about is that I have suffered from depression for years and I used to be ashamed kind of embarrassed to admit this but I've come mm along way and I know it's not that kind of like dog petting book Reading Coffee Drinking. Jd Loving Life that many people see on social media and it may be hard to believe that depression can be found in one of the most seemingly happy people you know but it is. I don't get let me wrong. Bill Life is beautiful. I do love my dog. I do have a great relationship. Thank God I do live in California where it's always away sunny and I don't even own umbrella like to be honest if it rains in California I just don't go out so there's that now I also also recognize that. My life is one that I wouldn't have dared to dream of as a child. I can also recognize however that there isn't a rainbow if it doesn't rain and not everyday is filled with sunshine despite the Newport beach forecast me till you now. I'm no that this probably sounds a little bit like after school. Special like did you walk through a hallmarks card store and see like there can't be a rainbow that doesn't mean you know what I'm saying but like back at the end of the day it still Kinda true. I know for many people. The holiday season can be a really tough time. Maybe you've had a loved one that has passed and Christmas. Miss just isn't the same now or maybe there are really a lot of high expectations on you during the season or perhaps there's just a lack of sunlight in winter in that is getting you down. That is why I wanted to share with you. One of the hardest yet most necessary podcast interviews. I have ever done in this episode with my dear friend. Amy Porterfield I get real with you about depression and she gets real about her journey as well in this conversation we had on her podcast. PODCAST is called online marketing..
