"To kickoff. Finally after weeks of there being practically no news. We are excited. 'cause we've got a bunch of news talk about and i is project mainline Which is likely to get a new module and android twelve and get a big one at that art android runtime. A google engineer reveal the plan a comment within with an sp build This is the default runtime on android says two thousand fourteen us application and system services on android and basically translates an apps code into instructions and like other mainline modules. This would be a major component. That is then updateable via the play store and not requiring a full system update. So i mean this is one of those underlying under the hood. Things that like could fundamentally change the way android works which is fascinating. And if you're into this sort of stuff but then also in some other revolutionary android discoveries thanks to commit to the ao sp or the android open source project. There are plans to allow fonts and emojis to be updateable outside of full upgrade. Which is how it's handled now and note that these commits haven't been merged in yet so it's impossible to know whether this change will make its way into android twelve and it's probably say this is better late than never because he updating emojis wouldn't be something tied to a system update But here it is and more and more. We see things kind of disconnected from the system update from the full version update and being able to be updated via the play store and through kind of individual minor updates. Jason this i mean. Is it hyperbole to say this potentially changes a lot when it comes to android. It certainly moves in that direction. I mean i've loved the promise of main line and before it trouble of which is still active but mainlines the one that i get really excited about right now. The the potential of that You know for the last couple of years that it's existed my concern or my worry when i when i was first introduced was okay. This sounds great in theory. But yeah we'll see what really happens but year after year. It seems like google is really Placing a lot of effort in tackling these core fundamental aspects of the android operating system. That are underlying everything that that you do. And so it moves us closer to a world where android you know is updateable by and large most of these really major core components updateable through a an update on the play store. Instead of requiring an update. And that's kind of the promise of of mainline. And i just i love that. They're continuing to kind of build upon this. It really does did feel necessary if felt a little late because this is something that we've been complaining about for years the fact that you know. Updates are so reliant upon The or the the carriers everybody's got their hands in it and that all slows everything down this allows certain elements to speed up and to still be updated for people's phones to not be so so reliant upon those system updates because like we know very well you know a lot of. Oem's don't care to do the big system update so at least at least we're getting some of these updates somehow and i think art you know android runtime that's a. That's a pretty major component of android that hints. I hope anyways that hints at other major components being tackled in the future. Yeah i mean it seems like this. I must say disenfranchise. But that's not the right word but disengaging of these core components into the system. Update you know. Were really what then. You'll see when a new version is released. It is just the framework or the skeleton and the the components that go into that skeleton will be the ones that can be maintained from release to release Which when you think about it as much it's it's a it's a less bloated system. Update it's a less you know it's it's a then you have the the situation for more because the whole trend in The over the i mean how many years now maybe two or three years now has been iterative updates right the days of a massive like pretty much since mott wants material design role that i forget. What version has since that rollout has been of it has been a slow evolution versus a major. You know everything's different now. Meanwhile while everything everything is different now is a lot more fun to talk about. A slow in iterative is probably safer and leads to better development so this is probably smarter decisions so and then you know on the flip side of this emojis. Updateable without an update. Which i mean you know i. I could make jokes about that. Flows not here to defend emojis of course She probably would be if she were here. But still that's you know that's just another another aspect if that ends up being and and i'm actually this news doesn't necessarily point to that being updateable via main line but it certainly points to it being updateable the less updates which is the way it is now so one could. Maybe you know Imply that that's maybe the direction that is going whether it's using mainline or not. I still think that's a pretty pretty good move to be. Because i mean as we know emoji is is is changing often. You know there's often changes to it so having to wait for the update for people who love their emoji. That's going to be a big deal. Maybe they won't even notice. Actually but i would imagine they'd be happy that they have a new emoji right when it happens other news here. The snapdragon tech summit digital event is happening. it's a two day event at started today. and qualcomm is now teasing. Its next major flagship chipset so based on the brink convention you know a fifty five eight sixty five we would expect eight seventy five. No no no. They teased the eight. Eighty eight so it's unclear whether the eight hundred eighty eight is like more premium than the eight seventy five that they haven't announced yet that i don't even know exist. Just totally speculating. Or if eight eighty eight is kind of the replacement the new one All in we will find out about that You know as we go further but It includes a snapdragon x sixty five g modem so that of course supports millimeter. "It. So Some of the you said, you know sort of throw things at the soil and see what sticks and so forth and what I one of the things. One of the many things I loved reading the book and having known you for a long time and a little bit about the old days and so forth. That even though others would characterize you as a famous Gardner and you know an expert, all these very high praise kind of things in the book you talk about yeah? Like I'm trying to see what's going to work and some stuff's going to die and you know you're very candid about the fact that this is experimental even at your face of second big garden being a plants men having you just said, you the people who owned the House before they used to have you come prune this particular maple. I. Think you have a Master's degree in your thesis or whatever was. The Genus Acer Maple or something. So you've got some training and experience, but you acknowledged that this is an ongoing learning experience and experiment. Yes. Oh you know I. Don't think any of US call ourselves. True gardeners can can say, Hey, we finally of mastered this I mean there are there are some people out there that really have you know perfected the art of growing maybe a genus or to that of plants that are more difficult to grow but I would think any of us that are honest. With ourselves know that. You know we're still gonNA plant and too closely. Ridiculous. It is to take four inch pot and actually plant it. You know eight feet from another four inch pot. It's like that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in my life. Of course I'M GONNA plan that three feet apart and regret it. know in three years time. So I the these are the things that I continually struggle with. This this want of density of planting and. At the same time realizing that. I making a mistake in in the process of planting. Trying to you know force. Square. Peg round hole all of those things that we were doing his younger gardeners I I admit readily to doing again on a piece of property but I you know I think that ultimately you. You do this long enough and you begin to understand some of those. You know live principles of of what makes us successful gardening excuse me a successful garden work. And I think those are the things that I took with me in class and. You know continued to try to work within those. Principles to make a garden that satisfying to me.

Looking for a MacBook Air alternative? Here are your best options

"With kids about to head back to school either in person or Colle- laptops. Are. Front. And Center. Now Michalak. Air is a popular option. There's actually a pretty wide world outside of Mackerel S I'm Roger Chang and this is your charge. With me laptop expert and senior reviewer Josh Goldman. Thanks for joining me. Josh. Thanks for having me, Roger. So we're getting close to back to school season and who knows what? That's really gonNA look like you know we've got folks potentially going my kid's GonNa. Go to school with a bunch of people doing remote learning But with that said, parents will generally WANNA decent laptop for their kids no matter what their ages at this point Just start things off do you have a general tips for people on the hunt for Nick Peter? The, the one thing having you know, ended the the last school. In Quarantine the one thing I did learn from that was if you can afford to get it laptop with a larger screen than the eleven point six inch screen that most of the kids have on their chromebooks. chromebook obviously, he became really popular with schools. Except they went with models that have eleven point six inch screens which are very difficult for navigating the world of online learning. A lot of the online learning tools require more screen space so that the kids can actually see what they're doing and I think if you're going to invest in a laptop for your kid this season, get them something with at least a thirteen inch display fourteen if possible or even larger if he can. So what about touchscreen is that something that's necessary or is that more of a luxury I don't know that it's a luxury some or necessary I think it's just something that you can get these days as far as I'm concerned. touchscreens of the future everybody uses their phone all day long that's a touch screen tablets touchscreens. It makes sense for kids to have a touchscreen because that's how they're used to communicating with computers these days so. If you can get one with a touchscreen. Great. I don't think it's going to be a detriment though if you don't get one with a touchscreen and since we're talking about MAC books anyway or air replacement. macbook airs don't have touchscreens anyway. So if you're GONNA go macbook air, then you're not getting a touchscreen anyway. But one of the luxuries of gone with windows is you can get them with touchscreen. So catching and the MAC book air has been a popular option for a long time for students particularly college students But generally, what are some of the big reasons why you'd want to consider alternative is far as an alternative? if want to go with the chromebook, it's because that's what your school district is on. That has that makes things a lot easier than. Going with a separate operating system like windows or Mac os but the bigger thing for a lot of people going back to school is whether or not there their software that they need to get through school is going to work with the operating system that they have other than that it's more or less just learning to deal with the different features in the different houses. So it's not. I wouldn't say that like the OS is a big issue, but it's certainly an issue and you WanNa, just make sure what you're using his compatible with the operating system that you're going. Guys let's start with windows the the most popular operating system out there. What are some of the best options for a windows laptop. So if we're going to stick with the like as a macbook air replacement the macbook air has over the years been the most popular option for kids in school and or in college in high school students but they're. Obviously the the windows PC makers figure that out pretty quick and made a lot of laptops that look and behave in everything that MAC book air. So you've got things like. If you WANNA go really premium. Got Things like the daleks ps thirteen or the HP Specter which have a lot of the same design touches and it's just a super premium long battery life good performance and around thousand dollars. which is what you're dealing with with the macbook air. You're still at around that thousand dollar price point for their starting configuration. You can as usual get a better deal with with windows than you can with Mac. He'll usually get more features better processor, those kind of things with you go with windows. If you want to go. So those two that I mentioned her thirteen inch. If you want to go a little bit larger, my personal recommendation for most people is the Lenovo. Yoga. See Seven, forty, it's a two and one. So it's a little bit more flexible. It's a fourteen inch little bit larger screen, but still a nice compact package really good battery life really good performance and you can get it for less than a thousand dollars yen full disclosure I took joshes advice in actually purchased one. My wife and I are very happy with it so. On Josh thank you, it is it. It's one of those laptops that looks and feels like a Mac Book Air Bit and a you just getting you're getting more for your money with it. If, you want to go even less expensive on windows I like the acer swift three, which is running amd's latest rising processors and those the the processing performance you're getting out of that is like twice that of more more expensive laptop. So it's it's or should I say the processing performance is that of a laptop that's twice as expensive. Because as the swift three starts at around six hundred dollars and it's a three pound laptop fourteen inch display really really nice. Good. Battery Life But yeah, it's it's really cheap with good performance.

Cocktails With Flower Power

"We're getting to the good part creating the cocktails cocktails. Okay now as we said in the beginning you don't have to do these beverages with alcohol. In fact here is drink for the cocktail hour that it's very simply made. It is trader Joe's Grapefruit Soda with ice and Rosebud from the garden and sprigs of mint. And what could be more beautiful or elegant. That's except maybe if you added a little vodka to it but that's just me if you do wanna add a little vodka. You could make yourself a Martini. I call this version. The dirty lily bud and instead of being garnished with pickled onions or with all of this is garnished with pickled daily buds which are delicious. And if you like a dirty Martini poor little bit of that pickle brine into the Martini along with the flower buds. Now tell me what the red on the top is there. That actually is a good plant also for the cocktail hour garden because those are dried red hibiscus flowers tropical biscuits tropical hibiscus okay. This is a blueberry beverage that is made with vodka and blueberry lime and a little simple syrup or maybe a gob Acer Up. It's one of the recipes that I made for the Cocktail Hour Garden Book. But I'm showing it today for the Sprig of mint because that's break of mint is in bloom and many people forget to use blooming meant as a garnish. Whether it's for your eyes tea or for cocktail but grow your meant and pot so that it doesn't take over your world And then let it come into flower and use those flowers as a garnish. Yeah I think a lot of people might think that when when herbs flour the flavor is then affected in a negative way and while that can be true for some annual herbs. For a perennial herb. Like this it's not true at all the flavors terrific even when it's in bloom. These are the flowers of the New Mexico. Locust were closely related to the honey locust and almost the same flavor the New Mexico locust yes it grows in New Mexico but it also grows all over the country it is not just a desert plant and if you take those flowers infuse it in some gin and then garnish with the white flowers of the honey locust. You get the sweetness and the slightly gravy flavor of the flower in the gym and also in the garnish itself. That's gorgeous. I think it's beautiful. Yeah beautiful and you'll get the B. I saw that picture. Don't get that in the cardinal. Yeah it adds a certain thing that you probably won't appreciate and if you're not somebody who wants a cocktail you can take those same flowers. Make a syrup out of them and then turn that into a wonderful sorbet. That's also drop dead gorgeous if you ask me all right well. This is one of my must have plants in the garden. N- assertions easy to grow from seed put right into the soil. All they really ask for is a little sun and some good drainage and they are happy and the wonderful thing about this plant is the both the leaves and the flowers are edible in the summertime. One of my favorite things to do to walk out into my vegetable garden and say what's for dinner and what's always on. The menu is a salad. And what's always in that salad leaves and dister flowers so distortions are in what plant family anybody no. I'm GONNA pretend somebody said mustard. You're right in the mustard family. And they do they have that mustard e sort of hot spicy but green flavor to just a little bit of a spice which is nice and the flowers also have some sweetness to it so this is a cocktail made with gin and elderberry liqueur. And and basically what you do. Is You put those minister. Shem flowers in a Shaker Cocktail Jarir Mason Jar and you model them with either a wooden spooner model or you crush them up. You had your ingredients into that jar with ice cubes and then you shake it all right and then you strain it so that the biggest pieces and the ice cubes come out and you port in a glass and serve garnished with an assertion flower. The beverage has the flavor and the sweetness of distortion flowers in. I want to take this opportunity to talk about whether you shake or stir your cocktails James Bond. I'm a big James Bond Fan. But he got it totally wrong because a Martini should never be shaken. It should always be stirred and here is why we stir cocktails that are primarily either alcohol or clear liquids or liquids that have a similar density. Because they don't need a lot of agitation to combine the liquids and you want them to be clear and smooth when they come out into the glass but something like this or a cocktail that combines a syrup or cream or an egg that means a lot of agitation in the speaker in the Shaker so that the ingredients will combined well so for something like this which you then want to strain out the big pieces it absolutely needs to be shaken and you could make a non alcoholic version of this by putting the same distortion flowers in with a little bit of water little bit of lime and a little bit of a Gava Syrup shake it up with the ice cube strain and then pour some sparkling water and that would make a very refreshing drink. Probably doesn't need to be said that you put the sparkling water in after you shake. I've made that mistake. It's not a good one to

Four New Jersey cruise ship passengers hospitalized for coronavirus screening

"The corona virus crisis is growing as more cruise ships are quarantined over infection fears one ship in Japan now has sixty one confirmed cases including nine Americans this morning a ship came into port in New Jersey with at least a dozen passengers showing coronavirus symptoms and for more on what it takes to mass quarantine a cruise ship we're joined live on the KCBS ring central news line by Dr Gary Simon director of the division of infectious diseases and a professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of medicine and health sciences thanks so much for being with us this morning thank you so how does disease spread through a cruise ship how is this different than say a big city well it's a very small city to a small town people in close contact so it's a relatively easier to spread and when people in contact with one another expressed by aerosol or droplets there in close contact with one another the only way you can prevent that if you keep everybody separated and this is a very small area with a lot of people how do you manage to do that on a cruise ship very difficult even certainly keep people in their rooms serving a lockdown type of procedure but I don't know how practical that will be in the long run I'm also they have to eat to right I mean you're you're sharing I mean the coronavirus at this point what what do we know about how it spreads specifically it's it's a human contact it's respiratory so can you get it from a sharing space I mean are of a physical like if I touch something and I have corona virus in the next person touches something can they get it that way probably in the same way that we get we get cold now that doesn't mean you can touch something somebody touch within a day later but you know shortly there after so somebody touches it spread that way but but the the food I would have to be delivered DC's persons room I mean a big buffet it would would be relatively easy to spread so what can travelers do to protect themselves on ships the corn cruises I was thinking about was on the ship might be looking for the next light about start paddling should so not a good answer short of being cakes staying in their own rooms obviously washing their hands all the time there's really not much what one can do in that setting I whether they should unload the whole ship and put them into an armory or how you know hotel but I don't think that's practical either it's a big problem in that regard the only thing you can do is really isolate people and quarantine them and the problem if we set up a quarantine today let's say you say will point to them for fourteen days and two days later it is a new case well when do you stop the quarantine I guess you could stop it from the day the quarantine started but even that is probably somewhat iffy and looking at this the ship specifically the one off Japan that now has sixty one and it seems like every day the numbers just get bigger and bigger so how does it stop what a regulation and so if somebody was exposed before the quarantine was put into place they may get sick I mean don't think everybody who gets exposed get sick although we don't know what the actual tax rate is but at some point people have been quarantined long enough even if someone else who is in quarantine get sick they can be listed for the people who work quarantine the norovirus the gasto gastrointestinal type today is is this sort of unique this respiratory thing or is business something that happens on cruise ships all the time as well we just don't hear about or hearing about the corona virus well we we do know that you're successful virus the norovirus grows on cruise ships this is the same type of thing but Acer respiratory virus that's all is that Mrs in principle the only thing on a on a cruise ship with norovirus is you try actually people once again wash your hands and that sort of thing thank you so much for your insight even join other KCBS ring central news signed by doctor Gerrie Simon director of the division of infectious disease and professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of medicine and health

"Start though in the Bundesliga classic lying taking on Borussia Dortmund Ruben. Dos Gift goalscoring for fun of Les Rois on the the bench for this one. The business seventeen minutes saying dose gave cooler born chat. WanNa know who was on. This is just routine. There's another initiative cross gets cutoff. You just continues is run by head back in space very good header yet again. So don't mean look into reorganize get things sorted as we kick off the second half. What sixty seconds in the back of the net just by Munich counterattacking talking with peace? Or nearly she doing that to opponent. This time the mets fourteen minutes ago in the game DOS game. We'll make it three now. Looks routine but this I touch was something special. It's high awkward. Takes on the inside of the Thi- perfectly in stride then finish nine nine to rub salt into the doorman wounds Hummel's with a own goal to make it four now stretching. I mean this kind of tells the story the Doorman Lindsey evening. It's that kind of day for Braschi Dogma. By Munich for Borussia Dortmund nail is how finishes such a strange sport because you look at buying and the way they play today and you think one fading having any sort of problems because they absolutely brilliant and new manage bonds for coming in well not coming. He's been this but all of a sudden he's been hiding under the reince whether some temporary or permanent or to the season we we. You figure that out in in time but share reaction from the team here. He makes a couple of changes to the starting lineup. I think as a team you see by you looking back to their best individually the they look happy it seems as far more more more cohesive being said Dortmund plead. They're part goodbye mimic looked. But if you're by Munich especially given the week that you had not you've got a couple of weeks tax international. Judy Acer greet we to go into the outbreak. On the back of what is normally the biggest game in your in your calendar every single Bundesliga game this season. Recent recent Champions League match as well is absolutely ridiculous for some time. We've been seeing that the best number nine and we'll football right and again and I always have to add the caveat that we don't consider them as your number nights but he has been the without question the best and still you see him continue to do that and you think from me with love and dump scheme has has instincts are better than anybody else's his finishing is better than anybody else's and he's doing it with a consistency not I'm just this season. You mentioned his record this season. But we've seen that for quite some time whereas ordinarily even with the best trackers the so reliant on on on service that they have ups and downs that they have purple patches on this little yet. Somehow Eleven doff ski and you show it today and we. He took those two goals. Not Great Boys in finds himself in space yes but he still had a lot to do in creasing bridge himself yourself and then he makes you finish look show easier the end of it. I mean it really is something temperature to with to behold is interesting. You mentioned in a couple of changes the surprise inclusion Danes Brain in this game. He did ungodly start exactly as cleanup against Jin Sancho who had to come off in the first off. No Riyadh Raff Hunt. Eckstein who who was at the game said Sancho came of a hamstring been struggling or the game long now just from from my perspective looking at it on the television screen. I just thought that all that someone with a hamstring injury jogging off the park doc and then as a cameras followed him on the sidelines. There was nobody there weakening with a bag of ice it it just those two things didn't didn't connect for me that being said I'm Dave Gibney start in a difficult game on was simply sensational by and got the start that they wanted. They got the goals. Ah Give them a little bit of a of a gap team to play with a certain freedom but then again that comes with a manager a new manager bosses and mentioned but having Africa clear pound. And knowing what you want to do and everybody buying into that which I feel Karachi had lost I think through his own feelings and not through non necessarily through to that team. I just folk lost the respect of digestion. I lost out sometime time last season and it was spinning in what you show inconsistent performances Boyd only by eleven scoring telling the one of the biggest matches of the season and Philip Casinos on the bench. Yeah that's a very big call to make. That is a very big call to me continue. Who came in and plead with a freedom when when he first arrived on you thought he was a piece that was missing and that opportunity? I took club like by Munich for him to play in behind the striker in the whole with the freedom and everybody kind of looking for him with the ball was the opportunity he wanted. But if it doesn't fit into the plans then you have to make those big plays respect that as much as players wanted to see the big names of Rome them the respect a manager who has a plan and asserts himself is the main influence of that plan. I I can't you saw that. Meanwhile dolman seen this before we got into the classic Chance really to assert yourself and you get beaten off the pop. Yeah I'm beating Battle of the park and and for for dormant as much as they're still in still early enough in the season that it can be rescued a lot tonight. No you saw so nothing today at and maybe a little bit of a hangover offering them a very cheap. Excuse here after coming back from two down against Inter Milan in the Champions League. But but then if you're a skeptic or you're a cynic you say well you shouldn't be too don't intervene. Yeah in the first place but it quite clearly shows that don't have their issues and when you come up against a team like by Munich who don't let you back in. Then you have the. Persistence of division: after the Berlin Wall

"Tomorrow marks thirty years since the Berlin Wall fell with the Iron Curtain Separating East West Young East Germans dash the last one hundred to the wall and will hold into the West by West German food. They don't come on. The wall was built overnight in nineteen sixty one dividing city and a country in symbolizing a divided continent but three decades ago. There was a change in the air. In East Germany. Revolutions had begun to sweep through central and eastern Europe. Communist rule was beginning thing to come to an end. There was a sense having lived in a pressure cooker not just that year but for a number of years preceding it and I think we all I decided to go on like this and macelroy is a senior editor at the economist in nineteen eighty nine. She was working as a correspondent in East Germany. My the experience that the fall of the Berlin Wall was sitting at a press conference with condition of ski head of the Berlin Party. Who accidentally fall by trying to relax travel restrictions and then saying for immediately so a number of us then rushed to checkpoint Charlie and do other crossing points tried to persuade border guards at the wall was they didn't believe us and then a couple of Acer it was on the evening news and that seemed to who people like a suction from across the city tens of thousands of people to go due to the wall and to stop shouting? Let us cross. Let Us Cross and about eleven o'clock in the evening. The gods was no other advice just gave up an I did that. And that's the way it happened. quickey is sue easy enthusiast. People celebrated celebrated on both sides of the wall some took to it with hammers and shovels tearing it down piece by piece not surprising lots of hugging lots tosses of vodka and we take some with the Berlin Wall in historical significance. WHO's a healing of the scar? God that ran throughout Germany it was a country being slotted back together again but it was also a Europe whole and free. It was about pushing. I'm back together something. It'd been destroyed in that Calamitous War in the twentieth century for those living in East Germany the change was profound and I watch television all night and I was in tears and I just couldn't believe what I saw. I have the feeling something's happening in this year. Of course no idea and no thought that the war would come down. Cornelia Guenter manages our Berlin Bureau who was born in East Germany. My knife has changed enormously many aspects first of all I was able to travel. That was always my wish and in my desire for me it was very very happy thing that has had a very positive impact on my life but not everyone in the east called at the same in his speech last month. German Chancellor Angela Markle who is herself east. Germany said in Ulster. Today must all learn to understand why live from many people in East Germany German unity has not been a solely positive experience. Reunification made successes of some victims of others. Today it's being debated like never before one of the interesting things that's happened in the last few years. Is that large parts of West Germany. How many have started to realize that the way that they look at reunification is not the way many people in the east so retort experienced? It's almost half of West German. Say They consider reunification to have been a success story and the same goes for less than a third of East Germans. Tom nuttal Berlin bureau chief. The speed with which change with brought to East Germany was almost unfathomable if Germany was to be folded into what was a modern market economy like West Germany. Then mass layoffs and deindustrialization the industrialization were inevitable. Because voss way to these Germany was simply uncompetitive with mass privatization of East German companies to bring them into onto the market. That was a union of the currencies that ensured that the East German currency could be exchanged at one to one rate for the West German deutschemark. Moth what that meant is that firms in East Germany. All of a sudden having to pay their workers salaries that they could no longer afford and voss way to them with bust overnight essentially and had to lay their workers off by one estimate. Eighty percent of East German workers at some point in the post reunification years found themselves out of a job. And do you see evidence of that trauma still today. Yes you do you see it. In a small but persistent economic gap wages ages in the east are between eighty to eighty five percent the average of what they are in the West as productivity gap the proportion of large German companies companies that are headquartered in the east is absolutely tiny and then you have things like they call it. The transfer of elite of the sort of upper echelon of public jobs in the East only four percent of them occupied by east.

Why the "Fail Fast" Mantra is a Recipe for Failure

"The Fail Fast Fail often. Kim failed forward. Mantra is all the rage in Silicon Valley. Failure is viewed as a rite of passage. A secret handshake shared by the insiders countless business books instruct entrepreneurs to embrace failure and flaunted as a badge of honor. There are now conferences like fail con dedicated to celebrating rating failure and fuck up nights where thousands of gathered and more than eighty five countries to toast their failures there now even funerals for failed l.. Startups I kid. You not funerals complete with bagpipes. DJ's sponsorships by liquor companies and slogans. Like putting the fun in funeral. I don't buy it. I don't buy it primarily because when you celebrate something. You often don't learn from it when entrepreneurs are a too busy failing fast and celebrating it. They stop learning from their mistakes. The clinking champagne glasses mutes feedback that they might otherwise receive from Failure failing fast in other words doesn't magically produce success when we fail often none the wiser considered the study of nearly nine thousand American entrepreneurs who found the companies between nineteen eighty six in two thousand the study compared the success rates which they defined as taking a company public of first down founders and founders had previously failed business now you might expect at the experience founders. These people launched just a business book before after all and presumably learned from their failure would be much more likely to succeed than those who never started a business before. But that's not what the study found found. The success rate of first time entrepreneurs was nearly equal to the success rate of entrepreneurs who had previously failed in business. There's there's another study that's also on point. Researchers Examines Sixty five hundred cardiac procedures by seventy-one surgeons over a ten year period. They found that the surgeons who botched procedure actually performed worse on later procedures. The result suggests that the surgeons not only failed to learn from their mistakes but also ended up reinforcing bad habits. So what explains these counterintuitive results. Well when we fail we often conceal it distorted distorted or deny it we make. The facts fit are self-serving theory rather than adjust the theory to fit the facts. We attribute our failure to factors beyond our control in our own failures. We overestimate the role of bad luck. Right we tell ourselves better luck next time. We blamed the failure on someone else. We say while she got the job because as the boss likes her more or we come up with a few superficial reasons for why things went south right. We say things like always only had more cash reserves but personal culpability. Often doesn't make the list now. You might be thinking well. What's a little white lie? After all putting a positive spin on failure can help help us save face. But here's a problem. If you don't acknowledge we failed. If we avoid true reckoning we can't learn anything and in fact act failure can actually make things worse and this is one of the problems with the fail fast. Mantra theory can make things worse if we get the wrong messages from it when we attribute at our failures external factors like the regulators the customers the competitors. We have no reason to change us. We end up throwing good money after bad we double down on the same strategy and hope the wind blows in a better direction. This is I think what most people get wrong about persistence. Persistence doesn't mean repeatedly doing failing insanity as a saying often attributed to Albert Einstein goes is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting expecting different results. The goal isn't the fail fast. The goal is to learn fast. We should be celebrating the lessons from failure. Not Not failure itself. Learning has another benefit. Learning can take the stigma out of failure. There's a quote by the author T H White. That I love off came across it recently when I was looking over my journals from from high school and I ended up incorporating into the book he wrote the best. Thanks for being sad is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies. You may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins. You may miss your only love. You may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics or no your honor trampled in the sewers of Baser Acer minds. There's only one thing for it. Then to learn learn why the world wags and what wags it without opportunities to learn why the world wags and what wags it asked t h white puts it. Failure has no upside but if you learn something if this failure means you're more likely to succeed when you try again then failure one hit us hard learning takes despair and turns it into excitement. It takes the the drama that comes with with failure and turns the volume all the way down with that growth mindset you can maintain gene forward momentum even as the explosions pile up even as the work gets hard and even as the obstacles begin to appear insurmountable as Malcolm Forbes. The founder of Forbes magazine Puts It. Failure is success if we learn from it.

Come from Deloitte, a global leader in digital transformation, helping clients apply technologies like cloud and AI to their unique business challenges. Deloitte dot com slash look. Again. Seamus astonished. The co founder and chief executive of the house party video app spoke at the festival about how house party is averting a loneliness epidemic. We felt that there was a solution that was needed out there. Particularly for the younger demographic, who's feeling. I mean I, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that they're on the precipice of a loneliness epidemic. And they're spending so much time on their devices in their rooms, and what we're trying to in is humanity. Back into connecting and. We all sort of opted into a synchronous communication. We started. Texting each other back and forth. We started liking in a news feed or. Re tweeting or responding in these Acer internist manners. And sure it's like officiant, but it doesn't fill your tank in the same way that like seeing somebody face to face does. And this is a response to that feeling and just trying to get people connected again in order to access such video chat apps. One certainly needs internet, a challenge for rural America, as of late land-o-lakes president and CEO. Beth Ford says that farmers are struggling to access basic resources because of their limited access to broadband problem that we're going to have is this technology, these tools that have been developed. They cannot be leveraged broadly. Probably about thirty percent of farmers. Don't have broadband access. You know, they're two hundred counties in America, that don't have broadband access there in rural America, and this is a real issue so beyond the tools. We touch have harvest bakers in America. We touched twenty five percent of the farmers with our federative model. The biggest concern I have is their ability to. Make an best moment in their communities. They are they are not able to do that. We're looking at all different options because you know what there's not going to be one solution. Switching gears and to mix it up a quick check in on the future of food for all the talk of dining apps, and food delivery, much of which disgust at the festival, the future of how we look at food continues to evolve. And apparently, the future is a healthy one, according to restaurant tour Antony rows, ski and the resident chef of net. Flicks is queer eye home cooking is due for a modern day revival. When I was developing the menu at sure definitely had a lot more meat and dairy on it than it does now, like our menu now has zero Darrien no red meat, and we just have a little bit of chicken. One thing with fish, and then everything is pretty much plant based, I just I don't know. I'm thinking about a lot of with everything that's sort of, like, Borden, did, for example. And now David Chang, and there's a lot of content. And I know I'm a net flicks baby. So I'm like, obviously promoting shows that are there. But like there's so. Much awesome. Because convenient doesn't have to be total garbage that was. But of course, a sampling you can check out more wsJcom for all things. The Inspirational Tech Startup Story Behind ClassDojo

"Podcast is proof that technology works best when it brings people together. An each day. We have a guest on myself sharing our experiences, and then I invite you to join the conversation listening all over the world. And for you to do the same and share your insights and your experiences. This is one of many reasons why I'm excited to get today's guests on which is I'm Chaudhry, and he's the co founder and CEO at class Dojo and game onto the podcast today. Because Klesko Joe's vision is to help every child on earth get the education that they live, and they think that the way to change education is not from the top down. But from the ground up by serving teachers children and families and making education happen every day. And this is the I really love class Dojo start as a communication apt to help them come together as a community and is beginning to help them get the educational experiences that they need for their children. Both a new from Acer great story, and you're gonna love this one so book elope and hold until I so I can be meal is all the way to San Francisco. So we can speak with Sam Chowdhury co founder and CEO of class Dojo. Massive. Well, welcome to the show. Sound kenny? Tell the listeners who and what you do. Yep. Hi, I'm sorry. I'm Sam the co founder and CEO Quattro. Joe? We think the consumer education company like Liam, and I British we moved to California little over seven years ago to start cost John we both had backgrounds in education. So I went to this funky school in my teams which encourage the teach was was learn. So I ended up teaching for like twenty hours a week. They might teams which is kind of a wild expense and then teaching off to college wasn't McKinsey in their education. Gluten London and make underneath them a bunch of stuff in most recently that they need. In in computer, science focused on technology in classrooms, and we met and we wanted to do more and education. So we ended up we have for new investors who wanted just sits back this and crossed educated emerged from them. And today there is a communication what connects teachers and children and families. It helps them share more often more postively about what's happening at school now home so anything can afraid and videos messages little bit supposed to feedback and that really helps to build a close knit community around the classroom education. Kind of business is an experience that is created by people working together. And so helping the people on the ground doing the work together better like a really important coal for and kind of that Sunday shift community now has been built in processes and homes like or unrolled actually one hundred eighteen countries. You know, these tens of millions of kids. And and that's exciting. We think that the real opportunity for us an division from these classes reading the to help likely charters get an education that they tell you mentioned a few moments ago that when you was at school they taught you have to teach as well. As learn how old we see says, he says fantastic angle. Yeah. It was pretty cool. I was this age like thirteen to to the end of school, actually. So the backstory that privacy that younger survey smooth school on this is in Wales and eighteen kids or something. And then the older, isn't it this next school that coaches to teach was about three thousand kids, and so really the real danger that kids just kind of get lost. And they ended up having Samedan system. When like they heard you to come in like lunchtimes after school that take over some of the core kind of curriculum process. And so we taught like small groups and big groups and are in grade level and younger grades. And then putting cool expense. I've recently glossy winds told fortune that seventy percent of sales come from word of mouth an organic connections. So while Grassi is shaping. The future of beauty by leveraging influences, it quickly struck me is class Dojo is doing exactly the same in education by leveraging teachers and families and is the world's most widely used communication app for pre K eight schools, but can you offer an overview

Right now, you were women are going into tech than in the ninety s the same is true for people of color and students from lower income urban schools, the training for tech jobs of the future is not evenly distributed. My name is Indira Muhammad. I'm sixteen years old. And I am from Baltimore, Maryland, the first computer, I had I remember it was like white and green and had the ears of flipped up and you could play games on them. And it was like, really kitty, computer. Getting barbecue sauce on it. And here's mother didn't want her falling into the skills gap. And the family got a real computer, a red Acer laptop and Indira and her siblings. Spent a summer trying to learn the coding language python from book, eventually her older sister found the digital harbor foundation. A Baltimore nonprofit that offers after school workshops in technology endear told us that when she started going. There was one topic. She was dreading. Here's more of her story. And it was like graphic designs game design some coding, and I was like oh my gosh. Not coding, please. Tell me we're not gonna use python. But during a time where we are doing game design. I love that you can make things interactive. And then when we saw the three D printing stuff, they do, and it was cool. It was fun and three D printing was thing in the future. And it was like this is something you guys can do. I learned a basics most d- do that we work with and I learned how to fix some of them. Sometimes you don't know what you're doing. And you just have to test a bunch of things and see what happens there's warm printer. It always gets clogged. And you just kinda gotta figure out if this an awful slight. We have to end up trying twenty different things is those kinda like simple hard at the same time. If you're in technology, sometimes you feel isolated because you feel like it's my problem. It's my code. I don't know what I'm doing. But the thing is if you find the right environment. You could have more of a collective mindset is say as my problem. Yes. Can you help me? And I'm realizing they're a lot more resources to help you to like now everything's on YouTube. So like if I really get stuck enough going to. My family plays a big part of my life. If my older sister didn't find this place for me. My simply we wouldn't be here. And if my mother is push us towards going here, we wouldn't be here. And even though at one point it was like, yo I want to quit so bad. No don't quit because if you quit you're gonna leave me here by myself. So it was like we were there for each other. I want to open up my own fabrication shop. And so I if I have a company that comes to me, they're like we have this event coming up, and we need figures we need signs like I want to be able to do that like vinyl cutter. Okay. Gotcha. I got some three D printing have a laser cutter. I can do this. That's Indira Mohammed age sixteen in Baltimore. Find more stories like this at marketplace, tech dot org. Can you run Mac OS on a Windows PC?

"Swansea. Massachusetts wants to know if he could do boot a windows ten machine and run MAC too. But I don't think you can't you're right. Because apple is so proprietary way they would let their software on a windows machine. But that's just that's just me. That's just me. She says Tim shafir teaming. You're right. I'm prime into takeover your Giga ten dollars coming your way. But, but there is another another side to the store that you are so good. I've done it can go the other way. Hi ray. Welcome to the show. I am. Well, thank you him. So it was Kim accurate. Is that what you're asking? Yes. That's what I'm asking. I don't laptop two thousand twelve MAC book pro that doesn't charge all the time. Every once in a while charges. I went to upgrade, but I do wanna spend the three thousand dollars. So prayed I bought smack book and stu- Acer slap top right lot. Lot of people do that very common. Okay. It's tie definition knowledge of it. Because it's half the price of apple hardware, pretty much the same, by the way, pretty much the same hardware. Here's the here's the problem. Apple doesn't sell MAC OS. It comes with a MAC, but they don't offer it, and there's no way to legitimately. And there's the underscore that legitimately to get it. There is something called a hacking Tosh. This is this would be a violation of Apple's a terms of service. But people do it all the time. The reason I don't recommend. It is. You could if you Google cintoss. You'll find ways to put it back on your on your face. But you can't do any updates because if you do chances are it'll get broken takes a lot of extra work. Most people you can easily put windows on a MAC because at Microsoft sells windows, standalone, MAC, harbors, basically, PC hardware, apple provides the drivers. They they don't mind if you wanna do that they allow do both dual booting and you can also use a virtual machine, but there's no way to get MAC OS. So the only way get MAC OS is to either own amac or know, somebody who does get the MAC OS from them. And then modify you have to do a lot of hacking around work. I will occasionally charge and I can turn on every once in a while. How old is he smack? I mean, you can always take. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. That's worth keeping going because Lesley until hasn't really changed much since two thousand twelve bring it to the apple store. The put a new battery in it. I did it's not the battery. They says. Nine hundred dollars to go. Forget about it. Well, I don't wanna do that. That's no, that's why I bought the other machine and not case, I probably better off buying a MAC mini. Yeah. And. Less than hundred bucks. Right. And then you could do windows on that actually mech minis are pretty good, you know, deal. They've released new ones or you could use windows, which isn't the end of the world.
