"There's money left on the table that drives economist Crazy. That was Lisa Child and Zoe Chase from a planet money episode in 2014. Now listening along to this episode are professors Justin and Betsy. Let's take the economic thinking that we've just learned and apply it to this situation. This uber situation we just heard about. So I think the most interesting thing about a snowstorm in taxis. Is think about what happens on each side of the market. So this nice stone means lots of customers. Not many kids. Lots of demand, no much supply. How do we fix that if we want more cars on the road? Each of these drivers is thinking, Should I work? One more Allah there thinking about the marginal benefit relative to the marginal cost. The marginal cost of being on the road in a snowstorm is it's miserable. It's super high. A marginal benefit of being on the road is how much extra money I'm going to make. That is the price that they can charge for their rights. So the way to get them to one of Mawr drivers to want to be on the road is for the press duress surge pricing actually tries to bring out more drivers. This is a thing of price is an incentive. If we want more drivers on the road, a high price is an incentive for them to stay out on the right or to get up off the couch and get on to the right. Well, the show to have the company itself. Uber is thinking on the march in, you know, in a normal kind of car service situation, I suppose you could order your drivers to go out in the snow storm and just say you have to do this or you're fired. But the genius of uber and markets like it is that it's thinking about what will it take? To influence the marginal decision of the person waiting for a cab of the driver. You know who's thinking about going out? It's it's really trying affect their really next decision. The amazing thing about markets is it all works through voluntary exchange. And so it's exactly that a choosing incentives to try to encourage sellers to sell so the snowstorm problem is lots of bias. Very few seller's willing to solve that A higher price is attractive to sell us. So it's going to get more cars on the road and unattractive Tobias fewer people going to want to take taxis that higher price brings the quantity demanded down the quantity supplied up. It brings the market closer to balance. I know people hate this. I hate this when I have to pay more. But once you learn economics is a certain joy in watching uber during the search, you may not want to pay more. But you, khun C supply and demand happening in front of your eyes in real time on the app. And this balancing of supply and demand. I mean, this is happening in every market this happening inside every business, right? It's everywhere. All around us. We still see it. It's even happening. In the dating market. OK? Oh, come on. Have you ever been in a nightclub while you notice that one gender is more numerous than the other? Okay. Remember dating go with it. Go, and I know I just remember this night. Very well. Betty took me out dancing in Philadelphia. And we looked around, and there was a lot more. Sheila's them blokes in the bar, but this is a predominately straight And we noticed this. I mean, we call it a disequilibrium the two sides of the market. We're not in balance. Not everyone was there to dance. And we saw market forces work. Word got out that there was a Let's call it profit opportunity. Four young men willing to dance in this particular bar, and over the next two hours, we watched equilibrium happen. So there was a surge of men coming into the building. There was quite literally a search and I saw the supply and the demand of Young men and women come into balance over a period of about 2.5 hours. It was one of the most extraordinary things. This balance is called a market equilibrium, and that's going to be our last economy. Word of the day, and you can think of the market equilibrium as the point where the blokes meet the Sheila's. Or in the uber example probably better where the number of people who are willing to pay for the search price are equal to the number of drivers willing to drive at the search price. And so finally Justin and I just want to ask you like it doesn't necessarily mean that everyone gets what they want. In this situation. When we have a market equilibrium, right? It doesn't and they're still people waiting in snow because they can't afford uber because the price is too high to them, their drivers who are not out on the road, this is really important. Equilibrium tells us what's going to happen. It's our ethics that tell us what we think should happen or what we want to heaven. They could be really different things and so a market could be an equilibrium. And they could still be a lot of pretty miserable outcomes. It is the case that there are often many market failures and market imperfections that mean that markets will come to rest at a place that's not socially desirable are first class. And we're already getting into the messiness of taking intro economics out into the real world, because all the choices we've talked about today. I have been in a vacuum. Remember everyone else is also making their optimal choices and in future classes, Planet Money Summer school will talk about how individual economic choices. Can have real impacts on your neighbors, your community on inequality and the future of the world. All right. Class has come to an end. But we should probably go over our vocabulary words. We had opportunity cost the value of the next best thing you're giving up. We learned to ignore some costs, and we spent a lot of time thinking at the margins. What is the cost of one more delicious Chicken nugget. And.

"This American life did a little story about North Carolina in which they appear to have stumbled upon this criminal election, rigging scheme in this specific district in this specific part of North Carolina and again. This wasn't about this current election. We've just been through where there's all this controversy now and all this national news and all this Michigan today, the unconsented their story on this American life about what was going on in North Carolina. This was a couple of years ago. Dismay. My my glass program today. Just what I wanted. We've arrived at two our program at two he's making a list checking at nice coulda find out who voted twice. So this fall with certain Republicans. They would discover under the tree was proof of voter fraud. So that's IRA glass. That is likely familiar voice to you. He's the host of this American life, and you can hear there's like the Christmas theme for this episode of this Merican life because this was just before Christmas two years ago in two thousand sixteen and this American life sent a producer down to North Carolina in December two thousand sixteen in it wasn't about the presidential election. They sent this producer North Carolina in the wake of the governors election in North Carolina in two thousand sixteen which was a super super super close race in two thousand sixteen the incumbent Republican governor of North Carolina was Pat mccrory he was running for election, but in two thousand sixteen he lost his seat democrat named ROY Cooper won the governorship. Instead. But it was super super close and for a long time the Republican incumbent Pat mccrory wouldn't concede that he had lost the governor's race. And in the aftermath of that election in two thousand sixteen the North Carolina Republican party set out to basically try to prove that the Democrats must have cheated that incumbent Republican governor, Pat mccrory couldn't have lost the election. If it looked like the Democrats had won it must be because they had somehow rigged it. And that's where this American life producers Zoe chase picked up the story because North Carolina Republicans went to a specific county in the southeastern part of the state, and they lodged a formal complaint saying that the Democrats in that county had rigged the election. And that's why Pat mccrory lost the governorship. So this radio producers Zoe chase goes to the hearing in that county where the Republicans are lodging this complaint. And then she's there with tape recorders running while the whole thing completely boomerangs check this out. Few hours in the complete starts to fall apart in this kind of mortifying way it happens when the person who actually filed the complaint takes the stand. Doing fine. Mr Michael MacRae darlas. He takes the stands looking like, he's not quite ready for this. Because it's got a big beard skinny guy windbreaker. And once he's up there being questioned by one of the Democrats on the board of elections. He seems amazingly unfamiliar with his own case, you allege that there's a scheme that was taking place in blatant county correctness the word that you used blatant scheme. What did you mean by that? Skiing bullet you use the words resulting from a or use late Inci? Use the words or the attorney that wrote it. What's got your signature at the end of signity rounding but installer. As riding bed personal writing data. I didn't do that. Attorney Turney was one drug product do try to remember who that attorney is like what his name is. I can't Jim is Steve. I can't remember his last name his attorneys seem embarrassed. It is embarrassing when a client who supposedly lodging a complaint is not familiar with the complaint. They try to object doesn't work McRae. Just ignores his lawyers and keeps talking over them. It tells you right. This is the greatest radio show in the history of radio shows. So this is the story that this American life is following Republicans in the wake of them losing the governorship. They're trying to lodge complaints. The trying to say Democrats must have stolen that election. Here's why the Republican governor isn't conceding Democrats had a scheme where sure of it. There must be some kind of problems, the Democrats must've done something wrong. So they get this local guy in bladen county North Carolina to stand up on behalf of the Republicans and lodge this complaint and it falls apart and his complaint goes nowhere. And it is a really big embarrassment in that moment. But then here is the boomerang. Here's how it adds the complaint is dismissed three.

"It's the Brian Lehrer show on WNYC. Good morning, again, everyone many poor people today than a month ago. No the name and face of Arizona, Senator Jeff flake for better or for worse or for tortured ambivalence. Of course, this came as a result of when California professor Christine Blasi Ford delivered her allegations of sexual assault against the now supreme court Justice spread Cavanaugh flake was the sole Republican defector on the judiciary committee to call for the FBI to investigate. But the next week voted to confirm flake confirmed later that in the end he was always planning to likely vote for bread cavenaugh, but the nation needed a bipartisan pause in his opinion, regardless the call still made him a household name. And a short lived hero for Democrats. My next guest this American life producers Zoe chase had been accompanying the Senator in the days before and really the weeks before and sometime after that historic decision originally, not thinking. She was doing a cavenaugh story, and she chronicle those moments for powerful and thoughtful episode of this American life that some of you have heard called the unhappy deciders. Hi, Zoe, welcome to WNYC today. Thanks so much for having me, Brian. It's exciting. So you thought you were following Jeff flake for a different story before this nomination fight exploded. Well, I I don't know ABC. I would put it exactly that way. It's more than I thought I was done with Jeff flake before the nomination fight exploded because they had done this this this long story for this American life about Jeff flake trying to get a deal done, you know, the basically legal status for undocumented immigrants, and it's really hard to do a deal like that around immigration reform when you're a Republican running for office. He is not a Republican running for office. He's just a Republican who's retired from the Senate. So he thought he could do a bipartisan deal turns out he could not this is not a moment for bipartisanship, then this cavenaugh thing. So then do that story that's three areas. Then this cavenaugh thing heats up, and I see the Jeff flake is in the middle of it. And he's looking as as you pointed out as tortured Lee ambivalent as he always is. And I called them and said, hey, can I hang out with you figure this out? And that's why the title for the piece. The happy the I'm sorry. The unhappy deciders, right? Yeah. Exactly. He was not happy about having to to make this decision. And when I called him, and we talked before I went down there just to see if if there was a piece to do if he was truly undecided. He truly was I believe he really was in that he had a limited amount of time to make up his mind, and he did that kind of in front of the whole country. Here's just twelve seconds from your episode of flake agonizing over the cavenaugh decision. Debate staff.

"Bipartisan daca deal in hand it addressed four issues the white house laid out a few days before the president seemed open it said he'd sign anything plan going forward with this lindsey graham who'd been playing a lot of golf with president lately talking about what good friends they are would sell the deal to the president then we'll get the president to sell the deal of the american people which means at this point none of the senators are supposed to talk about the deal publicly not yet because they went donald trump on this deal and sell it that's the only way the house of representatives and the republican base is going to go for the deal this brings us to act three flakes next at bat when the cats way the mouse he can run around again who zoe chase a wake up the next morning to mass confusion somehow or other strategy has gone off the rails i'm on the house side doing another interview but it's easy to track flake he seems to be going from reporter to reporter saying they have a deal i'm reading this on twitter eventually shows up on i the fact that there is a deal came from senator jeff flake of arizona agreement that we're the bipartisan group i'm talking about six of us working that we're shopping among our colleagues now this was not the plant fake news his name on the deal could kill the deal for the president he often flies to arizona's soon as he can on thursdays he's incredibly close with his wife cheryl the youngest of his five kids senior in high school and basically running with him to get to the airport sierra running around the capital saying you've gotta deal why as we rush out to the car waiting to take him to the airport flakes press officer runs actress pulls him back and literally whispers into his ear it's weird of never seen them do that before we get in the car i don't know if it's vanity or strategy that's making fleet talk out of school drive slow what were you doing today why did you do that.

"President trump endorsed a steep cuts in legal immigration on wednesday economists say that's a grave mistake washington post survey of 18 economists in july found that eighty nine percent believe it's a terrible idea for trump to curb immigration to the united states sea trump couldn't do the plan that might be hard but would help the economy that would appeal to yes his base but also the business community and democrats as well instead he had to float a stupid unrealistic draconian cut that will appeal to ciro democrats that will turn off the business community and that will only appeal to his base well this base likes it they got a policy proposal that will give them cheer that is almost no chance of turning into law in the real world why why does this go on because we're living in something of a calcul stock resi definition of which his government by the stupidest and least leastqualified stephen miller by the way is not stupid and he's not unqualified he just unqualified to govern its government by the least qualified the guy's qualified to make very cutting arguments he in fact all the people in the administration just don't have the skills to actually get an agenda past stephen miller can get his people dancing in the streets or in the streets more cosmopolitan locales the reverse on the show today i know what you're asking yourself with their skara mucci but to understand where the merge might go from here and he is having a press conference slash online town hall tomorrow we need to understand where he's coming from so i got zoe chase in here because she interviewed him back when he was a potential republican donor looking for a vessel and i'm gonna talk to zoe and we're going to play the tapes of those interviews this one this was for the true scaramucci complete list but i know you're out there this whole thing goes on for some length such as the complexity and majesty of scaramucci so i will count with your about here as both our interview and our spiel so now enjoy the education of anthony scaramucci a blossoming as told in three movements d d d d d d d d d.
