"The Michigan congressman for the tenth district, which includes his home of Dryden is with us this morning, and as we head into this final hour the Frank Beckmann show. It's good to to get his take on what's happening with the government shutdown. And I'm not sure when it's gonna end we don't see any hopeful signs, all we hear is arguing that his long as Trump paths that money in their five point seven for a border wall. This is unacceptable. That's a disgrace to American data that edited and and on and on it goes while while the president insists we need that for our own border security, and he argues that to people who have fences around their homes who locked their doors at night when they leave because they don't want people who don't belong in there to enter, and it it makes all the sense in the world to secure the border, but we cannot get it done the view this as a as just a an effort by the dams to. To make Donald Trump, look bad. So that he can not get his key initiative from the last campaign accomplished. And so that that will hurt him in his reelection bid. Is that what this all about? I think the big pirates about wreaking him make it difficult to get anything else done and the twenty twenty election you've seen the number of Democrats have already announced their life president every Sunday watch the base I have to admit that it'd be fun to watch other circuses. They all try to move further left of each other. And you know, I mean, we'll shortly thereafter based upon what they're talking about. We'll become Wheeler or something. But it's it's that that's already started. I mean, how many democrat candidate for presents? They have five or six early yet. Well. We're gonna find out. There's gonna be a big birther movement about Kamla Harris who I was just reading a story this morning that she may not be eligible to run for for president. But we shall see. We may hear some news stories about about where she was born and raised which was Canada. And we'll we'll see how that all plays out. But you're right. They're getting in line right now. Do you see any of the same from the Republican side? You see the president being being challenged? I don't I don't believe. So if you look at this stuff. The national committee and the committee for Trump are are working side by side. I don't think that'd be very difficult for someone to to try to take that on. And and basically take on both entities. So I I don't see any any any likelihood that's the case. I I can certainly tell you that I'm fully entertainment. What I'm doing? I can't recall inside Sanderson decide decided they want to get into it. It's it's a tough job. I mean, they're turned environment. It's a tough place to be. I mean, you're in the crossfire and all your friends and family in the crossfire twenty four seven. So you have to have a great desire to change in America. Take that up. And you know, I I don't recall a president at least in my lifetime who has faced this kind of opposition from people who seem to want to run him out of office and end his presidency early and have from the start. I mean when when you start from from that level where we're president is in office. He's elected by the American people, and the opposition party is doing everything it's can it can to undo that election. It's it's never been done before in our country it borders on it borders on South American coup stuff. Well, it's it's certainly it's only been destructive to cry. Getaway progress things I support an awful lot of policies the president administration. Not all of them had somebody talked about it. I don't necessarily agree with present size. But one this we need fundamental changes country. We were hey, Rog direction. And if you're willing to stand there, and the costs are pretty high the stripe is pretty high. And that's why the struggle going on here in Washington is is the change directions place but change a fundamental belief. That government is not the solution to everything you think is a problem around this town, someone says the problem with someone designed the program you want to spend a lot of money, by the way, that's your money. That's our money. That's the my work for never sending it here. Hiring bureaucrats spare money to tell you how to get a better. I'm not a problem solving Washington. You got now that's for sure. Congressman let's close with this Nancy Pelosi is insistent she will not invite the president to give a state of the union address on the house floor, where do you where do you see this going? Well, I also wanted a resolution. Join the finalizing predation here, she can't affect block that the president is not need Nancy Pelosi delivered an address to the American people on the state of the union I based proposal to the White House on auction that exists for him to do just that not a campaign rally actually, maintain the decorum of what a state of the union and do it. Elsewhere. I look into the details back their ways the president could do that. And make a significant impact on my talk. Nightside of the American people. This isn't about to Washington styles for deciding whether he gets to speak or not. So I think I'm aware they looked at options are still looking at going through the process to have that if the house chamber, but should Nancy decide this now what she wants what she can do. I think you should move it. Elsewhere and delivered. You you said you you don't want to get into where? But I'm thinking maybe the border somewhere down on the southern border. There's a lot of options do the southern border. Although so hard. I think he wants to get a large group of people in one place. Talk to listen to and talk about the priorities in this nation. Rather than how before? I think that. Options that are there that allow him to do that and still do that without causing all kinds of security issues. So I I I've advocated I advocated last week that they look at actions and unaware that they are of but advocated that the president is states is not new gadget closest to tell people at the state of this country. No. We can do that. Exactly. He's required to tell the people how he views the state of the union. And and I'm sure he will it at one place or another congressman Mitchell, always good to speak with you. Thanks so much. Sorry. I missed you Friday night at the charity preview here at the auto show. I hope you enjoyed your stay rejoined it. I I got to stay a few days in town before I pulled back Tuesday morning guy, the schedules turmoil enough that my eight year old came with me. "Yes. Oh boy. Well, it was busy day on the Reverend Dr Martin Luther King junior's day, wasn't it. Well, certainly the president first and foremost, a went to the Martin Luther King junior memorial here in Washington, it's technically closed because of the government shutdown. But according to the the press folks who went with him to the media people who went with him in the motorcade have been cleaned up or whatever there was no. There was no overflowing trash which we've seen a lot of on the mall here in Washington. But the president stay there for just a few moments, frankly, laying wreaths and only said Hello to the media for a second didn't make any other comments at that venue there. But it was again, it was very cold. What we did have. Of course, also the vice president went with him. We also had in various places around the country, including here, Washington, presidential candidates and democratic politicians right now relating a lot of the government shutdown issue when the border wall issue in particular to Martin Luther King junior's philosophy and. With how they say that the border wall is not a welcoming thing for this country and attempts to keep out to people in this country, and you know, trying to make political. Connections between Martin Luther King junior's philosophies, and what we're seeing today with the border wall shut down. You might want to look up the reverend's granddaughter who points out he was not a politician. He he was a philosopher, and he had some dreams and some beliefs that we're all pretty good. And I suspect that he would like being dragged into a political battle between the Democrats, and the Republicans that have caught so many people that he was speaking on behalf of in their little fracas because that's obviously what's going on right now. Well, obviously, it was no coincidence that come Harris Senator from California decided to announce her presidential candidacy on Martin Luther King junior day, she joins what will eventually be a very crowded field. But as an African American woman, she's of Haitian descent, a belief as well as Indian descent. But as someone who will a person of color. Let's put it that way too is running for president. She chose that particular day yesterday to do this, and and the believing I guess it's symbolic or what have you? But she's she's going to you know, there's gonna be a lot of people involved in this, but in the presidential campaigns Paul but the yesterday we heard Bernie Sanders. Call the president a racist. Yeah. What was he attempting to gain their he must already know that he doesn't have a chance in his reelection bid. He will be outdone by people a third of his age. Well, it's we have Joe Biden, by the way, speaking of a third of his age. Yes. Yeah. So yes, there there is what one might describe as Corey Booker decides to run we've got walking Castro running of the who else cares and jello brand. So there's going to be an age gap. Between the you know, the Biden Sanders and even Elizabeth Warren if you want to put her in that category. I would certainly yes. And some of the others who are running right now, not a huge age gap. But there is an expectation that maybe some of the other candidates, and I'm just putting my analyst hat on here. First second, but some of the other younger candidates might appeal to younger voters. But Bernie Sanders seems to be interested in running this time Elizabeth Warren that may steal some of the slender with that and take away some money. But this is a dime. If you're going to run you better start doing it relatively soon. Because of dollars not only gonna go so far. It'd be interesting. If this is the election that gets young people back into actually exercising. Their franchise. And maybe with the young field like that. They will I I'm still relatively cynical about that. I guess although how so how how so went up. Well, I you. Issues. Again, I'm being an analyst here, but they seem to get young people upset and concerned about you hear them talking about what we're going to get to the polls. And and all that sorta then they never deal the most reliable voters are older people. Right, right. But I believe that for the midterm elections. There was an uptick in the people who were say, let's say eighteen to thirty or something like that along those lines. I'm pulling that out of the top of my hat, but I do believe there was some uptick in terms of the midterm elections, which may have had some impact on them. I salute you again Bob Costantini for actually pointing out when you're putting on your analyst hat and giving some opinions rather than doing a report filled with opinion as a news report. I I liked that about you, Bob, I'm serious. Thank you for being with all the Twitter responses. I guess from time. And by the way, good. That's a good thing. White House correspondent WJR's? "You know, it was all that story about Prince Philip giving up a a rather getting in a crash at ninety seven I noted in one of the stories in the New York Times that he gave up flying when he was seventy six seriously. Yeah, he was he was a pilot apparently and he flew until he was seventy six he gave that up, but he's far from giving up driving because he's already been spotted back on the road back on the road in a brand new Royal Range Rover without a seatbelt. Yeah. How about guys out of control? Let's go. Even the Queen of England can't control this guy. Scrambling to try to control your mom, his wife, the lady that was involved in the previous crashes now. Saying that there's cover ups and everything else. Oh, you're kidding. What cover-ups they they didn't cover up. He's ninety seven years old shouldn't be driving. Apparently did a Breathalyzer on both of them. Apparently. She's not happy with the way things are going in the investigation. Oh, she wants a personal policy from the prince. He's got a broken wrist. Oh boy. Well, I don't know. We have sad news out of the Detroit area this morning Olga oca- at the age of ninety two big fan. She did a nice job. We ran into her a couple years ago Willie. Yeah. And we we almost couldn't believe it. But we ran into her. I don't think it was at an oldest kitchen, but it could have been but Kim, and I ran into her and we had a great conversation. And I said, you know, you ought to come on the show. Sometimes I will sometime I will never happen. We just never put it all together. Oh, it's good. I love that food and the crackers and the cheat. I really I mean, that's it's a wonderful lunch. The soup and the broccoli is legendary gotta say broccoli soup. Yeah. Well, I can tell you this. She was struggling back. Then she told us. She was honest. It was tough with the restaurants. It was very a tough matter of fact, how many Oguz are left here. Well, twenty-six restaurants remain today. All but one in Michigan. The chain struggled outside metro Detroit. And someone bought her out Mark show staff. Yeah. And but she stayed around. It's kind of like a florine Mark staying around as miss weightwatchers, even though someone bought her company out of the long while ago. Well, we send our thoughts condolences to olga's family. Sorry to see her go, but ninety two's good long life, but people are living longer and longer. And that's a good thing. Was there any reaction to President Trump being invited by Michigan house speaker Chatfield to come and do? Do his state of. White House said that it was under consideration. I do think the White House responded within the last Jedi. Yes. Yeah. I guess I never really paid attention to the fact that the president is only able to do his state of the union upon invitation by the house and the house in Washington will add invite him. Nancy Pelosi kindergarten kindergarten battle that. They've got night. I salute any politician who admits that it's both sides being ridiculous in really not caring about the eight hundred thousand workers who aren't getting paid. And if they try to pretend that they care they don't on either side of the aisle. So anyway, I mean, unless they're doing something to try to change all that. So he could speak from the Michigan house if he can't get into the house there in Washington. Can you imagine all of the attention that would get? I mean, the state of the union always gets attention. People are going to listen to view, whatever he says in the speech, right, regardless of what you, but if he went to another state, Michigan or someplace else to deliver the state of the union that would be a real attention getter and probably get him some votes that would be an attention getter. Maybe start a trend surprised. Yeah. Why not do it from different states every time Chatfield and see what what he's heard so far. Yes. If he's had the direct contact back. So that, but I think it'd be funny frankly, but it would be as you say, dick. It would be good for Michigan. Guess what? How much that's gonna cost with just security and such and money that would come into Michigan. It's our money anyway. "Display. Here's frank. So I'm sure, you know, about the latest dispute between the house speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Donald Trump. The president is scheduled to give his state of the union address to congress on January twenty nine but speaker Pelosi. Has told the president, you know, you'd better not plan to do it because the government shutdown we can't guarantee security, and so maybe better not give the address it's required that the president provide congress with a state of the union message. He can write it and in all presidents do and then they also make the address, but this year is different. And so other states are taking a look at this and go, wait a minute. We've got to have a state of the union address and here in the state of Michigan. The new house speaker the GOP house speaker Lee Chatfield of levering has sent an invite to President Trump to deliver his state of the union address right in the Michigan state capital in Lansing and speaker Chatfield on the other end of our line this morning. Good morning. Good morning, Frank. I appreciate the opportunity to be honest. I'm actually celebrating this Martin Luther King day with my two oldest children and. Actually currently in the Henry Ford museum. So I I hope it's not too much noise around me. But I appreciate you making time to have. No. And what a what a great place to. Celebrate that too. And I'm sure you'll have them aboard that bus that Rosa Parks staged her her sit in on in Montgomery, Alabama. That's in that is E M as well along with the Kennedy car from the assassination of president John F Kennedy, it's just a a wonderful wonderful place. Well, my my two oldest children have been begging to come here for a couple of years. And all of those things are on our list and actually on Martin Luther King day. Henry Ford has open free admission to the public. So it's quite busy in here today. Well, that's terrific. All right. Let me take you away from your your duties there for a moment and ask you about this invite that you have sent to the White House apparently to seek the the president's address. Here in the state of Michigan. What what have you heard back so far when did you send it the nuts and bolts of, but if you would share it, why the invitation on Friday, and you know, it came to me considering the dysfunction that we're seeing in Washington politics and the partisan gridlock that dude I wanted to provide the president of the United States an opportunity to fulfill his aptitude requirement to give a state of the union address. And in Michigan. Here we found a way and bounce government to work together. And I'm a Republican speaker. I've set the tone that I want our democratic governor to be successful. Because that will mean the state of Michigan is successful. And I'm hopeful that Washington Democrats come to that same conclusion, and we found a way to get things done. We've lead the country here before and state of Michigan. And I wanted the president to know you've got an open venue here in the state capital. Should you to give us address without tell you this spring time of of government shutdown that we're experiencing right now. Now at the time that people need to hear from their commander in chief. And I thought it was the right? Imitation. And they asked me to send it officially I have. And they said I should your back from him shortly. So we'll see where that goes. But I hope it just sent the right message to Washington that you can work across the island get things done. What was the the official date? I'm looking at a copy of the letter, but I don't see a date on it. Of your invitation, Mr Speaker. So I believe I sent that out officially on Friday the eighteenth. Right. And and and any idea when you might get some kind of response, you know, what I'm not exactly certain. And I know the president has been quite busy sense. My invitation to him, and you know, with the proposal that he had made Saturday two all within government to bring you know to open the gun right back up and get us moving in the right direction. So out of the White House has contacted me on a couple of separate occasions and has said that the letter has been put in front of the president. He has read it, and it's under consideration. So at this point, you know, we're just waiting to hear back, but I'll tell you Frank my my I bowl would simply need to have him deliver it in Washington in the federal house with an open government and at the same time ensuring that we have good border security. And I think he's made it's fair. I think it's honest, and I'm hopeful that the Democrats will take it. But at the end of the day, that's not my purview. But living in a federal Listrik system. Government power survive between the states and the federal government and then. Our best interests in the state of Michigan. We have an open federal government. And I just wanted him to know we are open at your service, and we will be flexible with you. She wanted to deliver it and our beautiful capitol in Lansing. Any word from the governor's office on what Gretchen Whitmer might feel about this. You know, I have not heard back in any official capacity of what others in the state of Michigan. I would think whether negative or positive, but I will tell you this. I think it's a step in the right direction for us. Because though, the governor and I have disagreement. I think we're both committed to not letting those disagreements defining, but rather our ability to come forward with solution. And I'm hopeful that Washington will step in new talent because you know, Franken in an era of divided government. You you can't get anything done without an element of consensus and burning desire to see Coppermine. And we're going to do that in Michigan. We will ensure that the people are served. We will come together and find consensus on the issues that are important to the people state of Michigan. And I hope this up to Joan with speaker Pelosi and others in Washington. It's time to set aside partisan game and start serving the people and that will mean to go with the president. All right. Well, we shall wait to see what the response may be. It'll it'll have to be soon though, because the twenty ninth is is almost upon us. It's only eight days away. So these gonna do it could be a quick decision. That's right. Well, listen, I will be awaiting decision when I hear back from them and officials Tabachnyk Frank you will know about it. Good deal. I look forward to having you back on. Then if that's Senator Mr Speaker, thank you so much. Thank you, sir. Appreciate it. The broadcast tonight starts right at six with guy getting started. And then at six thirty. We'll get there from the ribbon cutting ceremony. It'll be my honor and pleasure to once again. And I think I always forget to I don't ever know for sure. But I think are we doing this streaming live on WJR dot com. We are face booking. This live Facebook live on Facebook WJR's Facebook page, all right w jazz Facebook, and it will be a live presentation of our broadcasts hundreds of people watch it people really enjoy watching it. Well, I think we need to we're letting them know now oftentimes, I let them know during the broadcast, but that doesn't really help think ahead of time. You know? So we had this this commercial with a nice jingle. Finger lumber. Yes. And I'm very sorry to hear the gentleman who seems like a true gentleman saying that they're closing. They've decided to close in two thousand nineteen and part of the key of their charm. And what they do is what? You know, lumber yards. We call them. Lumber yards. Lumber yards used to do in hardware stores used to do. And what they singing their jingle is finger. Lumber will walk you through a project that point you down the aisle. There's a difference. There's a huge difference. But this worries me that we are moving into a generation that doesn't understand what real service is all about is it closing. I don't know. They just have decided to retire. Maybe and either there's no one to pass it along to in the family that wants to work that hard or. Nobody wants to buy it or the finger lease if it's the finger family don't want it to continue without them for sure being there. I don't know what it is. But there are so few. I love I've said you before I love going into Staples. You know, I just like going into hardware stores and and office supply stores. I think of point hardware and lumber in Grosse Pointe. Russell hardware. I think they're near near nearest Birmingham achieve their little expensive. But hardware stores and lumber yards and and places like that or getting harder and harder to find. That's interesting. I wonder if people are using YouTube and looking at how to do their own price. Here's. The Home Depot and Lowe's big box stores are appealing lease little family owned special shops that do have the key. We walk you through a project points you down an aisle. That's very true. What were you saying there, Steve I was just gonna say years ago, you had the Ma and PA hardware stores now, we're all over the place and slowly. But surely over a period of time they go by the wayside. And you know, I'm a big Home Depot guy. Because again as I've stated throughout. My illustrious radio career. I'm about his unhandy as it gets. I mean, it's pathetic. You worked at that. Very important 'electronic store. Well, don't Paul please electronically. I am a savant. But when it comes to, you know. You're talking about a guy that will walk into Home Depot, and I'll throw some Kalk on there. Just to make it look like I know what I'm doing. I see and I don't. In the in the old days, you go into a hardware. I remember going into. I'm sure it was point lumber, and hardware you walk in you might walk out with one screw because it's the one you need, and they know which one unique. Yep. There's still a few Moran. You know? Well, thank goodness for that. I go to Warren pipe and supply where they help you build your project, and they have exact, but there are there are other stores around too. But there are few and far between too few and too far between, but I'm glad you gave the name of that one Warren, right because it was a big actually a store that Glen Haege. He mentioned a lot when he was on the Aaron live. Supply. But there are others to where you walk in. And what happens there is exactly what you've been describing. All right. They help you on. They've got exactly what he had. And they know what you need when you don't six almost six fifteen. Let's still call it six fourteen. "Way they do business. Not acting like a family in Great Britain. Well, maybe eight dysfunctional family Prime Minister Theresa may yesterday suffering a humiliating defeat over her plan to withdraw Britain from the European Union, which is supposed to do in about ten weeks. A four hundred thirty two to two hundred to vote to reject her proposal the biggest defeat in the house of Commons for a prime minister in recent British history underscores how how comprehensively MS may has failed to build consensus behind any single vision of how to exit the European Union. It is very confusing on this side of the pond. But luckily, we have professor Peter trombone, chairman of the Oakland university department of political science, he also happens to be an international relations expert, we have leaned down from time to time, and we're leaning heavy on you, professor Trump or this morning. Good morning. Good morning. Paul. It's hard to follow. We just know that there's a tremendous turmoil now across the pond. Are you there? No, we lost him. We'll get him back on the line. And we'll ask him his from his expertise. What exactly is happening, and what could happen next, and what will have to happen within about ten weeks to go until a Great Britain is scheduled to leave the European Union. And I as I said to take a moment ago, I can't tell if it's people being mad that they're leaving or people being mad that they haven't left yet and Dixon. It's both what turmoil this is causing. And in fact, she is going to face today. She's got to be ready prepared to face another blistering day in parliament as she battles to save her premiership in the wake of the crushing Brexit defeat yesterday. And I think we've reconnected with the professor it's a little confusing for us to figure out what is going on. What might happen or? Could happen next or or what will happen next? What can you tell us? Yeah. So today, they are the leader of the labor party. Jeremy Corbyn has introduced a vote of no confidence in the parliament. And so that will be debated today and will likely be voted on by the time. We get to the end of the day may is expected at this point to survive that vote she still has the support of her own party. And she also has the support of ten members of parliament from Northern Ireland members of the Democratic Unionist Party and together that's enough for her to maintain her office. So assuming that she doesn't fact survive that that still leaves open the question of whether they do about Brexit because unless they can renegotiate a deal with the European Union that the European Union at this point has no interest in reopening. They're gonna crash out on March twenty nine with no deal at all. And that's going to produce all kinds of economic and political chaos in the UK and in the. European union. So no one really wants that outcome. This is partly personal for you in that from what I understand professor you spent a fair amount of time in Ireland and Northern Ireland doing research, but also a lot of time in England. I do. Yes. That's right. The key sticking point. What's all the fuss? Is it apparently no one really thought about what was going to happen with the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland? And the reality is that is that if they can't sort that out they're gonna have to reimpose a hard physical border between those two parts of the island of Ireland Northern Ireland. Of course is still part of the UK Ireland is in the European Union, and that border has about two hundred major crossings a three hundred mile span, and and because of the how porous that border is about three hundred thousand people crossed that border every day. It is the keys sort of economic connection between the UK and the European Union in terms of land borders, if they can't sort out what to do with that. And they're gonna have to put back border controls that would allow them to control if the Gration to do customs checks. And all those kinds of things, and that's a real problem. It's a problem in part because the destabilizes Northern Ireland and calls into question the future of the peace process there, and it's a problem because it it's fundamentally challenges the the question of the integrity of Ireland as well as the future of Northern Ireland is part of the UK. So the fact that the border is so important, I think was really overlooked especially in England when they made this vote two years ago. Well, I can tell you this on this side. It certainly is an especially interesting time to be in one of your classes there at Oakland university. It is like you lacking anything to talk about professor. But you say it's been a pretty interesting last two years. I bet it has thanks for your help. We'll be calling upon you leaning on your expertise again. I'm sure thank you, sir. All right.
