Democrats Go on the Offense With Biden's Agenda
"Christian cinema is the subject of Selena zito's latest column in the New York Post and it's a terrific one. Selena joined me from Pittsburgh also in morning after a football lost this weekend, like the browns. Good morning, Selena, happy November 30th, to 29th to. Good morning, happy November 29th year as well. You know, I am very beleaguered by the browns lost late last night to the ravens the Steelers got blown out. We are both not likely to go to the playoffs, though it's possible for the browns. I don't think it's possible for the Steelers anymore. So you might be depressed, but I like your cinema piece because I read a lot of the build back better Texas this weekend. I'm up to page 800. It's a nightmare for Democrats. Yeah. I mean, I haven't been that diligent in reading it because I've fall asleep. But I completely agree with you. There's so much in there. And, you know, it's really interesting, I think, to me, here in western Pennsylvania, the amount of ads being run by Democrat affiliate organizations that would side with the Democrats pushing them not only to vote for this, but also to make more amendments to add more things. And I'm just sort of stunned. Watching these ads call senators Casey. Make sure he adds this to build that
Why Overreach Could Doom Democrats in 2022
"Election. Good morning. Selena, how are you? Good morning, sunshine. How are you? I'm not so sunshiny. The browns got blown out in Cleveland yesterday and everybody's banged up. I think Kareem hunt torn Achilles, both of our tackles are out Nick Chubb has heard. I'm just grumpy. I got stuck in steelers traffic, but that's all I got. This is close as I got to watching them. Okay, well, I loved your column. I want to play this clip again. It's from the Terry McCall, in the key last governor's debate talking to Glenn young. I don't think Paris should be telling schools what they should teach. What is the significance when I've read your calm, but explain it to people who haven't yet gone to Selena zito dot com and read it. Well, I think the whole key to this entire race is one word. And that's overreach. And I think that that is the sort of chaos and power grabbing that the voters exactly voted against with Biden. And yet they are seeing with all of the Democrats. And I think that that listening to Virginia voters, that is the problem. What color has? And it's the problem that Democrats are facing across the country in these off year elections, Virginia and New Jersey are the larger races, but even in small municipal races. I think that Democrats are going to have a big problem in a couple of ways.

"Welcome back america. Here here salena zito is my guest. She is america's columnists you can read everything that she writes it. Selena zito dot com. We talk over the weekend about something that i'm not going to tell you about unless you can tell me about it. Selena can you tell me about it. I can't carry about it yet. All right believe in there. Tell me about justin trudeau. You just wrote a common. The new york post that is about justin trudeau. Who by the end of the day. I hope is the for their voting today aren't they they are. They're voting today and it's really interesting sort of what's happening there for the benefit of the steelers fans. We're talking about canada. Well my family have. We had a place up there for over seventy years. So i know a little bit about avian Probably the only one in pittsburgh go ahead. They lost yesterday. I'm happy happy happy. I got some heat on twitter from. I got rolled by yesterday. And he said you know east. Ohio watches the pittsburgh steelers. And i wrote back. Yeah so they loved him lose like yesterday. But you go ahead and tell us about canada so Trudeau coli snap election In august in. Interestingly enough he called it the day that these the polls came out that canadians gave him very high marks on his vaccines distribution. And they should have. They have the best vaccine distribution as a country in the world however they did not like that. He decided to call this snap election. Why because first of all there's very strict lockdowns in in canada. And so they believe that he was. It was irresponsible for him to do in the middle of a pandemic after being lectured forever about not doing anything and all the set now he wants everyone to go out and vote and the reason he wants everyone to go out and so is because he had he had High marks in the polling but You know that didn't transfer that didn't stay because people people look at it as like you're doing this because you want a majority government.

"There was all musicians but we have like bands and they played around town. We were doing stuff. And i had you know he had been making some records. I was making my first couple records so it was fun. You know the store. Everybody kinda supported us. We'd go see each other and all that but never in a million years even then did i think that we're going to be in a band together. In fact we were like kind of competitive. You know like playing gigs and trying to be bigger than you know. Devon loves to tell this story he says you know what i remember he goes. I remember going to see mike zito. Play somewhere downtown. Saint louis and about two in the morning he pulled his pants down and got naked on the bar and ran round the bar playing guitar naked and he said i thought man. I don't ever want to be in a band with that guy. I'm sure i did that. Because i was while and so we think it's funny that all the years later we ended up in that great band royal so the brotherhood so mike in recent years you started up your own label gulf coast records. How has that changed your perspective as an artist. Yeah yeah wow a lot for sure. Well even just producing I produced my first album. You know i produced my own records for all my life. I mean. I know. That's what i was doing was making records but the first record was the two thousand and ten girls with guitars. A featuring a girl from kansas city named samantha fish. So that was. That was a good out of the out of the box album. And just doing that. Of course changed. Oh okay we need to make a record in. You've got like young artists that maybe don't know how to make her record. They know how to play guitar and sing and they've written songs. But you're trying to tie the songs together and kind of make things work and you know all that so. I produced a lot of records for roof for over the that decade and all of that kind of led to the record label. I'd been thinking you know. For some years like man it would be great to have to have our own record label and a studio and produce these records like making these records. Not that. I think i'm great at it. I just like doing it by the way in every time i do it. Get a little better at it so jump to your question with the label. You learn a lot producing records from the artistic side of trying to help. Artists make a complete product right and being a producer means..

I would say now it's so different That might be more slayers not work racing than there used to be Was somewhat of anomaly. An ira and You know of course. Jon and brielle. They worked together for for a long long time to tv. Shows the other as well so many people came out of my mouth that You're saying you're talking about mixed a lot more time. That office tonight back in the day when it was pretty entertaining place and that was school. Not there that much. So i was there a lot but you know harvey. Yeah i've been harvey was. Rv like characters and there were many of them you know and he loved racing a lot of other things theater. Talk to him on the way home about plays. You've been to remember telling me about the c. Three carting desire with brando. You know he had seen all great place of great actors back in the fifties and forties fifties. I guess to talk about those actually great towards do stories about that but He enjoyed together forever. So joyes wife yesterday. For a while. And i mean you know it's just i i don't really it's hard to. It's hard to at harvard. Because people do harvey you know. Harvey they harvey. They saw them seminars. They saw him in. Saratoga raises people saw him in new york. The races and He was an eminently entertaining person. We just had. We had so much fun at the zero seminars. He and i for years. And steve steve chris. Different people From and such and i can always count and harvey to make as much fun. If not more the other gases i would do. It was good to have somebody. There is a good buffer for me because he was easily ready to make as much fun as anybody as i was well and one of the things that became instantly evident over the last you know twelve eighteen hours As you know word circulated and people reacting to your you know to you breaking the news and there's there's layers of of player and fan. Andy that were introduced to harvey at various junctures. I mean i. I was particularly by the tv show. I think you know. I can remember when harvey was talking about getting the replay show on you. Know back in the late seventies early eighties and how he wanted to get that show on tv and that was his idea. You know. don't forget. There was no internet back then racist word on tv. So keep up that. Might we show into people's homes and with great guests to handicappers whether they were people in the press box or other characters as well. And i think it was a forty five minute show back then covering all the races talking about the races and stuff and it was a real. That was the first of a kind was was a trendsetter. He really was a trailblazer really. Did he did things before other people didn't he saw them before people did any conflicts them and that show is one of them in that show getting that show and being able to be home whether you have new york area or guided upstate or different places or place around the country at brought new york racing into people's homes at a time that you couldn't see it at all it was cast him and you know it set the stage for a lot of other racetracks. Begin doing that. But more than that. If what new york wasting around the country.

Canary's Royal origin story
"Just aim and make that the problem that needs solving what they tell us about how you re right because you actually had a pretty interesting off between. Okay. So we've talked about the thing I'm so sorry this is turned into your life by the way. I mean, look for those of you who are listening I mean you can probably guess that her brain and I. A friends and I'm friends also Hula and I'm friends with Shell like I. Love these guys and I just think the history is is really interesting which is why I'm bothering to draw it out in podcast, but you didn't just go straight from. Straight from post into into things, canary thinks had a previous incarnation. Really. Tell us about that. So. So it's actually interesting because leaving things I knew that we wanted I wanted to try to build a product company. and. My earlier hope was actually slightly more ambitious than that of multiple products ends vision of you just buildings and then split them off and they'll go become companies on their own. And one of the things you figure out as that everything you build actually takes a whole bunch of efforts to get it to market I. didn't know the product that we wanted to build yet. So lost left sense post roll already headed huggy up version of multi go and so he went it's today did on that and made it better and better and better and when I left I had like four or five ideas. One of them was a west of believe it or not. One of them was like, how can we detect badness on this thing? One of them were solving? Remote Password resets as lame as that sounds like the Susan unsolved from a short list of them. And my plan was to find customers could pay me to solve that problem for them with understanding that I could then resell that as a product and and so instead of raising money said I'd go to a customer and say, Hey, this is a big problem for you pay me the bullet for you and after I bullet for them might sell it to other people and so we we tried a few problems and then there's a division in the because one of the first customers that actually did stuff like this fall we built aversion Ibuka version of wikileaks for Ozier, Jazirah. I'm really surprised that you actually a named that because I was prepared to ask you a question about the work you did for I broadcast because this is not something you've really spoken about publicly before is it? No I haven't. Not for a huge secret, but but just because like like generally customer names adjust not what? You did a lot of work for Aljazeera for quite a bit. And I were interfacing with very senior people in that organization. So. So what happened was it started with a friend of mine who worked there said that they needed or they were interested in wikileaks prod program, and this was way early when Wiki leaks was the darling of journalism soap. So you took this is when wikileaks was cool. It wikileaks was cool and all the journalists wanted them and already aljazeera was saying they wanted own platform where people could leak stuff to them. So I spoke to them a little bit and we actually bought a really cool thing for them like like considering when it was. Tells you. It's age it was a Java applet that loads on the client machine. Would negatively tool and natively PGP. Of with the logic that the stuff you want to leak never leaves your machine without being encrypted with a key that's never shown on the Internet. So on your machine gets encrypted and by the time, it reaches the Sava it's natively toward. So the Selva doesn't know who sent it. You can just pull that stuff off the server end up PG peaks update later on and what year was this This was twenty, ten, late twenty ten. So. So it was super cool an and advantage for but. And while I was doing it the whole of Egypt solution habit and I was looking at the at. Aljazeera. Win when Egypt cell. And Up Ultra Zito got taken off the edge and at the time what what I figured out just by accident by being there was that datebook that security meant having a file and here was all that was covering a what was becoming a Adam Spring. But literally, they had zero reveal understanding of security of like everything you can think off flat network and also it's such an interesting business model right? Like like everybody hits the John Lewis but journalists literally have. Some journalists have all the interests of a full blown spies except they publish everything end. Actually vamping up in cotton wool isn't the solution because putting stuff out there is what they do. So, ended up speaking to the general a at the time and. I proposed a bunch of products that I said we could vote for them again with the view to these would be great products A. Outside. And we agreed on a contract where we could hold a bunch of things like how would you know you owned? If you were journalists how would you know that your devices will own stuff like? And the interesting thing is he said look you can do this as long as you come over here to Doha welcome at you. And a at the time it was just my wife and I we said Okay let's let's go do a Doha holiday and see how that works. It turned out to be super interesting. Of An and when I got there, I saw the breath of their problems. And they then went through management changes like a a new data general came in who turned out to be A. Royalty and he was more interested in locking stuff down and at that point I said to them hey, listen he does these projects that we're doing for you but I'll leave. And he said look, can you build also security team and so? Essentially, what I did at that point, and at that point things was just me. So, I had the ability to and I said okay. Hired their team that team up and and something? That's that's not spoken about in the Canadian origin story is after I bought that team and left them like at still periodically. Not so much consult for them as as like give advice to some of the executives like like the head of the new media division or the head of ED Technology Division. and would canetti pitched idea to them of dropping honeypots as as a way to get insight into the new. Satellite Networks and they didn't implement normally they they used to do everything I'd say, and they didn't over two visits and that's when we started to figure the hold on these people want to do it. They just not getting around to doing. And we need to make these. Yeah. The problem that needs solving is is making this thing so easy that people who want to will do it. End. Of the time see sewing them was super interesting because it gives you an interesting view again into the. House coming off ten years of. Ridiculously convoluted hack sense post right because in the position I ended up in like just get involved when it will cool hack. So cool customers and so you end up with these really cool technical problems. And now you walk in an actually your problem is solving. You'll analysts it. Yeah. Journalists in Morocco sharing.

You know you were in position Certainly to to break the maiden and with hunt the front The Nice Revolutionary Coal and boy He really came through and it looks like he's taking steps forward very much. He's out of a mine shaft mayor so we've had so much success in luck with that you know what those two horses Over the years and it was just great. Because you know he's A beautiful coat long striding horses. You know that's such a wonderful pedigree and greatest decision and you know. His fresh waste is terrific back with that and then he's Grassley. You know there were some things. In between few bumps in the road where he drew bedpost lot of tracks. That's as enjoyable as has Carlin and Mrs Gender itself because it you know it was just so nad Dave Johnson even says they've Johnson says you could if you if it was a movie you wouldn't have gotten that in fifty takes because it was so natural and so wonderful so Zito after the first break and Carl Nascar at ten thirty. We'll talk to andy an hour three. We'll get his take on Saturday. And of course Eddie and the Fox team bringing you marathon coverage Friday Saturday and Sunday at Fox. This is who was stupid very good Tuesday race fans serious to thousand except to a one sports zone night sixty four could listening to Siriusxm online and at our website as well the DOT com. And I've got a bit of a kind of a hodgepodge of stuff today. I didn't get a chance yesterday to do something that I wanted to include. Knowing that we were going to have a very quiet week and somehow I actually it occurs to me. I managed to avoid having to disappoint. Sean clancy without the Iroquois Saturday so did avoid. I did avoid having to figure out the trip to to Nashville for this year. That just that just occurred to me but I I was looking on Saturday through Derby History Derby Media Guide and I wanted each day week particularly this week and potentially even at the next week to feature some of the the connections on the anniversaries of their various Derby's with the with the first Saturday being September September this year September but You know being on the second it it provides a you know pretty good canvas when you look through each of the days and today as it happens. Bay feth particularly incredible list of of Derby winners on September fifth We are going to get a fourth of September. This September thing is in my head now the the May fourth date we are going to get the May fourth date in so this way. We'll have a collection of of five this week. And the strike the gold and with Nick winning that maiden the other day closing day at oaklawn. I thought it'd be great to get nick. Nick Zito is GONNA join US early and Carl. Nascar is going to join US midway through the show today. Ten thirty because not only is it the thirtieth anniversary of unbridled. But it just so happens that may fifth was also when street sense won his Derby. So both of Carl. Have Scher's Derby wins came on the fifth and thirtieth is a nice robust number. And it's always great to talk to to Karl Nascar and in fact Nascar for a long time has been kind of a go to. We've had a lot of conversations derby weeks when Carl hasn't been involved. Ask Him for his observations and he's picked. He's picked a handful of Derby winners when we When we talked to him based on what he sees in the mornings but one of my absolute favorite visitors and you know the conversations in in two thousand and seven. I mean that that's as good that continues to be as good a triple crown sequence and for our for people of our age and you know for a for a sequence of triple crown races. That had three different winners. It certainly among the best ever. If it isn't the best ever I mean what what what went on in the three races were each indelible in their own way and then you know for the drama that they produced Street Sanson Morales first win and the getting off the Breeders Cup Juvenile Jinx ending that then cullen bursting on the scene and then followed up and of course street. Sense waited and pointed from that point for the travers. That worked out perfectly as well. We've told that story many times On the air with With Steve asking and and how that decision was derived the the Belmont that year. Of course and tomorrow I should mention at eleven bryant is GonNa join us as the hall of fame. Inductees are announced rags. Riches among the nominees. The finalists as it were and but those three races. I mean that was as great a triple crown as you're ever GonNa say at half and then unbridled and what ended up being kind of a book end season for him The Derby win first half of the year the Breeders Cup Classic Win at the end of the year derbies on May theft had these winners in going back. A few years monarchos was also. That was my first. Derby and Monarchos went on a fifth swail. Eighty four on the fifth spectacular bid. The Fifth Secretariat was on the fifth and from all reports virtual secretary continues to do well out of his virtual derby. Seems to have snap back and citation to citations citations eager for eager for a rematch. The the other may fifth Derby winners decidedly in sixty two. There's there's actually a couple of somewhat obscure the lesser known and lesser celebrated Derby Winners On the September fifth date but decidedly in sixty two and that. That is one that you don't. I don't know why that was a great happen to be a very good season and Ri- Dan Part of that. He finished third but Hard tack and decidedly the Derby winner that year and any one decidedly decisively and decidedly over Roman line. Of COURSE HORATIO. Loro go back a little further. Needles needles is well celebrated certainly Absolutely needles nineteen fifty-six with Dave herb and fifty one go back another five years fifty one count turf conn McCreary. That's a somewhat that that that's a somewhat obscure group to. Actually you look at fifty one count turf Royal Mustang Ru Phil de Fanfare not a lot of the counterpoint. Who went on and won to counterpoint win the preakness Belmont perhaps the best props the best name in the in that in that fifty one derby Mama Luke was last for for CV Whitney. That's Great Mameluke. Pretty good nine thousand thirty four cavalcade the UH the winter over discovery and certainly That was a actually. There's a few solid performance out of that group With with with cavalcade and discovery one too but then only one more stonestreet in two thousand nineteen Await stone streaked. Two words. Not like our stonestreet today. Just eight horse field and that is Picture of stonestreet gotTa look up a little bit. Know very little about stonestreet. One of those turn of the century winners. That isn't as I really just as not not as well known. So there's your historic perspective on Derby's and so zero and Nascar today and if this was scrabble it'd be a big day because you've got Z's and both of them Zito Carl Asker. I put up the video. That you'll enjoy mean we'll listen obviously will listen to A couple of Derby's this morning but had to put up the the amazing capture that is one of the most winning moments in racing history. I would I would guess. I mean I was at not Carl. Nascar giving the play by play to Francis Gender and the ninety. She was ninety one ninety two at the time and it. It's tough you watched it this morning. And when I in Wilkes said I connected and and any Nah once he connected with Carl to make sure he was. GonNa be around. I mean who who isn't around right now but I went and I pulled up that that youtube clip. It's about a minute and ten seconds and it's and it's funny because there's two different versions of it one They they used when later when Mrs Gender is being interviewed but the the one that they they go to you you can tell that Dave Johnson and Jim McKay and whoever else is on the broadcast. I there's I think there's definitely a case of voice and maybe Al Michaels.

Am I gonNA be given tours and account you know? It's based on tourism essentially although down the line we plan on teaching some safe city riding to Milwaukee residents how to route yourself to work using alternative routes you guys and me. Nobody knows this better than Zito man. I'm not a huge advocate of protected bike lanes and helmets. I'm I'm a big advocate of writing where there's not in the alleyways he's alternative routing using going along the paint tack fat bike. I know one cat who lives in baby who shall remain nameless but that I wanna break and then you gotta fight bike and ride some bayview downtown on Water Street and it's still may alternative routes you don't need to be and you have a fucking prayer by other than the street. I'm definitely a convert to the zito writing. I guarantee indeed indeed guarantee hell. You hardly even have to wear a frequent helmet because nobody. There's nobody around to run you over except your own Damn South. They exactly well. That's that's why I wear. That's why I wear a helmet. 'cause I'm like my own worst enemy and then and then your future tricks scenario. But it's it's you gotTa Know Yourself Heater just kicked my my. My favorite zito track was When you're when you're at kind of intersection using the windows and as a mirror and just seeing what's coming.

How a 'Flipped Palate' Affects a Racing Horse
"Nick Zito sent out Kentucky. Derby runner-up is box in the Belmont stakes. After having won the Florida Derby icebox went off as the three to one favorite in the test of the champion. But he finished ninth after the race. Zito said that icebox had flipped his Palette which caused his dull finish. So what does that mean. Take the tip of your tongue and tickle the back of your mouth make sure due to keep that soft tissue back. They're soft don't stiff in your throat. Okay that soft tissue. You're feeling with your tongue. Is Your soft oft pallet with race. Horses that soft palate can flip up and sit. On top of the EPA Gladys the EPA gladys is the little flap of skin skin in the back of your throat. That makes sure you don't swallow food down your windpipe or breathe into your stomach instead of your lungs. So when the soft palate sits it's on that EPA gladys the airway is partially obstructed. And the Horse isn't getting all the fuel it needs now. Typically the cure for a flipped pallet. Hallett is a minor surgical procedure to lift the Palette. So it doesn't flip up. It sounds relatively simple and in theory the horse should return to form thereafter rafter. But in the case of icebox after that throat surgery he finished off the board in the Haskell travers and the Monmouth Cup in fact icebox never won another race and finished in the top three in one allowance race over the next year and a half his final start. Art was an eleventh in the two thousand Eleven Breeders Cup classic. So here's the question. Is there a little more to it when a horse flips. It's pallet. It seems that that some researchers at Cornell University have been investigating that very question and one of those investigators. Dr Norm Ducharme joins us here on the gate with some surprising results. It's alternate and one of those investigators. Dr Jonathan Chatham joins us here on the gate with some surprising results. Alternate Ed and one of those investigators. Dr Martin Bucer. Coney joins US here on the gate with some surprising results. Your colleagues and you have spent a great deal of time researching researching what causes the soft palate to be displaced. What have you found so we found that in the earlier about historically shortly? We used to think that I was always the pallets fault that something was wrong with the pallid itself and that's led to a lot of treatment targeting the pallet but we found that it's the position of the larynx voice box that stabilizes the upper airway horses that exercise. This is and this is Pacific to race horses or horses that do more than just trotting any horse. Galloping race of the our study was focus on them as horses and we found that one specific muscle and they could be others as well. Just one that there's more studies on fatigues a few seconds before the Horse Displaces Palate is upper airway become loose quote unquote. And then the polit spices. The Racehorse In the second career often can become a sport horse and being the same greed so but if you relate into other functions that complained and many of the sport anymore says on a horse that this thing is talent is the normal noise. He's so the displacement of palate causes an obstruction to the airflow but unless the horse needs maximum airflow flow capacity the obstruction does not interfere or is unlikely to interfere with the performance of the Horse. But the horse the second thing that a pal how displacement does in the vast majority of horses as it creates an abnormal up arrest story noise often referred to as snoring or gurgling really. It's the same structure that people that snore vibration of the palate and horses is that displays the Palette of vibration of Palate as well and have normal noise affects the perception of judge. This writer in in the sports world. Can you please explain what the common surgical procedure is. How does the Pallet get lifted up? It's the airflow during excellence. And that lifts the Palette and causing obstruction during excavation and that's opposed to most other obstruction in the worst is anyway which happens during installation so during acceleration wants to the boys boxes below the Palette. The Palette is like Cassandra or spinnaker in an airflow get caught and the airflow and and lifts it up and vibrates just like you and I. We were snoring. The that's probably the proper metaphor accepting happens while racing or galloping horses now if the issue is muscle fatigue in the soft palate is that indicative negative of General Muscle Fatigue in the Horse in other words is the horse just destined not to run that fast no there. It's and then muscle fatigue in the muscles that controlled the position of voice box. We don't know that the soft palate actually fatigues south excellent. Maybe a an innocent bystander in that area were too soft pilots natural strength and fatigue May may not be able to prevent displacement. When it's an in nonsense illogical position meaning it sticking stuck on the air flow in the middle of the airflow but to come back to the fatigue? So so we've and this paper here that we're referring discovering muscles. Fatigue is is the likely cause of displacement and most forces right forces that is but they sit in their first. I'll answer question to through faith. The first question is is the muscle the horse just fatigue and this is just one of many muscles that are fatigue and and the answer is it's no. This seems to be specific to the muscle that controls the upper airways not the entire worse. There's different type above muscle their arrest story muscle which are meant to function all the time. And there's muscle us When the horses are galloping the skeletal muscle and the training of horses is focused on training them to be able to compete athletically? Let it quickly really focusing on their cardiovascular fitness as well as their skeletal muscle fitness. But we're not sure that the upper for airway current training at that are optimized for the upper airways voices and they might not be optimized optimizing for this group of forces that are predisposed to it because they have the wrong muscle fiber
'Why Is There Nothing Left?' Pension Funds Failing At Catholic Hospitals
"Support for NPR and the following message come from Almond Board of California. Did you know almond farmers and processors are dedicated to continuous improvement like putting everything an almond tree grows to good use more about their zero waste goal at almondsustainability dot org in upstate. New York hundreds of former complexities of a Catholic hospital have lost their pensions after their pension fund collapsed now. Their situation illustrates a problem. That is pretty widespread. Many many religious organizations are not covered by federal program that protects most other employees pensions. NPR's Chris Arnold brought us this report the people who worked at Saint Clair as hospital in Schenectady New York say it was like being part of a big family for some especially. My Dad worked there as a pharmacist when when I was a young kid and I you know I remember I was always there. It seemed like always part of that community of people care and Bradley followed her dad's lead and worked at the hospital for twenty four years and she's a nurse. She's fifty six now. Bradley says the pay wasn't great at Saint Clair's but it was a good hospital. I enjoyed what they did there and believed in the promises that were made about the pension but the hospital which was founded by the Catholic Church ran into financial problems command in two thousand and eight it was folded into a larger hospital system workers were told though at that time that the pension would still be there for them but then a year ago they got letters in the mail. Bradley was told essentially her twenty four years at the hospital didn't matter her pageant was gone. She stands to get nothing. Why is there nothing laughed who screwed up you know who did what to. Who and how come this happen Jr and who's accountable the AARP foundation is asking the same questions. It's it suing the Catholic diocese of Albany on behalf of the workers. The lawsuit says more than six hundred people lost their entire pensions. Bradley says her husband has been has some retirement savings but the couple's not sure that it's going to be enough. We have a daughter who has special needs so we have to worry about her future to now now most people in the US do not have pensions but those that do the vast majority are protected by government insurance program employers with tensions have to pay into it but religious religious organizations such as Catholic hospitals they can opt out and both avoid that expense and the cost of complying with other federal pageant rules. That's what the people managing managing. St Clair's hospital dead so there is no guarantee and many workers really are left with nothing dare. Smith is an attorney with the Aarp Foundation Russian. It's incredibly devastating I mean these folks were relying on this money for their retirement and they were promised over and over there about one million people people with pensions from religious organizations that have no federal backstop. That's an estimate from lawyers in a related case. That's not to say that all those pension plans are in trouble but some are and there is a growing number of lawsuits. The Saint Clair's case argues that even though the hospital had an exemption from the federal rules. It's still violated violated state law by failing to provide the pensions that were promised so dare. Smith says religious groups can't just abandon their workers. This is really a new wave colosseum. It's finding a way to make sure that they can be held accountable sixty nine year old Mary Hart Sean is also affected. She worked in radiology at the hospital and she's he's actually had to sell her house because of this pension debacle and it's still pretty hard for her to talk about it. Now House was going to be the place I retired retired who was just a little house but it sat on a little lake and it was so pretty peaceful and it just wasn't it wasn't gonNA work out. I knew knew it was in an I'm okay. I'm GonNa you know you get through it but it does take its toll on your heart and soul and to actually harsher and says she's better off than most. She's in a smaller class of older workers who were offered seventy percent of their pensions going forward but she says she couldn't trust that the money he would be there so she took a lump sum payout instead which she says wasn't very much money for its part the diocese declined and interview due to the litigation but said in a statement that it knows that people are suffering but that the diocese quote never managed the Saint Clair's pageant find Saint Clair's as a separate corporation and quote Victoria Esposito is a local legal-aid attorney working with the AARP on the case. She says it's not true that the Diaz has no responsibility. This hospital was run by the Catholic Church more specifically diocese of Albany and the diocese of Albany is responsible for making these people whole and paying their pensions like many diocese icees. Albany is facing costs related to the church sex abuse scandal but the lawyers for the workers say the diocese is not bankrupt. There's money there so esposito. Zito hopes the lawsuit can succeed so the people who worked at Saint Clair's hospital can get their pants back Chris Arnold N._p._R. News.
