"Michelle thanks for bringing us. That conversation with admiral haney. You've had a little time to process it by now. I'm curious what stuck with you. What have you continued to think about. One of the things that really stuck with me is how thoughtful and will henny has been about his experiences and what it means to be a good leader. He could have become a little hard or bitter given some of what he went through but instead he just turned around and said okay. How do i become a better mentor. How do i help improve the navy. How do i be a better leader. Where diversity and inclusion is welcomed. I admire that. He has almost unshakeable sense of optimism. That really struck me to that whether he was talking about issues of identity or issues of national security that his perspective on just about everything was remarkably considered. And i guess what struck me about. The conversation is how rare it is to hear that kind of tone and consideration in the public sphere. Because you know if you watch a little bit of cable news for instance you get pretty close to zero of that you know. We are hearing from the noisy few on most of the cable channels and social media but in my experience one of the things i love about working in the defense department and in national security more broadly as you have so many altruistic people who just wanna serve who just want to make a difference be part of something on behalf of the country do good where they can and the motivation of this podcast is like bring you their stories. Who are these people behind the scenes. Who are actually doing this work. And i think people will come away feeling better about the people who serve them in government. I hope that's the case. So you and i have talked about having your guests revisit. A specific decision or outcome brings us back to the room where something happened and reflect on that with hindsight and with wisdom. I'm curious how good you think your colleagues or former colleagues in the defense department and state department will be doing that. I think it's much easier with formers than with current officials. So they're just speaking for themselves. I think coming at these issues through their personal stories hopefully will help them to just relax into telling their stories and obviously one of the criteria for choosing guests will be people that we think are willing to open up and be candid and do that reflection with us in conversation. "Soc- so. I wanna ask you about your final leadership position in the us military when you were head of us strategic command which is basically in charge of all us nuclear forces. That is a very daunting set of responsibilities. Tell us a little bit about that experience. That really in some regards got my training wills going in terms of bringing to the department plans associated with. How do we do deterrence better herbivore. Warfighting plan that we have. The foundation of that plan is based on nuclear deterrent working. And you can't short sheet. That piece is. I came in aboard as commander of us strategic command. It was at a timeframe. Were i could sense in a lot of the military and as a country as a whole nuclear deterrence was something that wasn't being talked enough about in that end with a cold war. Absolutely view that was the preponderance of the argument. And don't we need to just cut more of it as we reduced the role of nuclear weapons which was presidential goal. But with this goal still was that we would have a credible nuclear deterrence capability and the some would've looked at the first part and said well. Let's just cut the forces that in itself has a problem of deflating the energy of those working in that business whether they're in missiles silos or whether they're operating from ballistic missile submarines or whether they're flying training missions with the b two stealth bomber where the b fifty two bomber which has been flying for awhile and that support was being deflated at the time. Frame that i really felt we needed to pump up the volume in terms of how important this mission is for our nation because it has existential consequences if we get it wrong. And now we're at the bring that if we aren't successful in modernisation now now now we will lose that capability and ability resurrected. Once you lose it is way too hard. It may not be done in time particularly as we confront competitors like china and russia that have growing capability in these areas as you said. The arsenal has aged submarine-launched missiles the intercontinental ballistic missiles land-based leg of the triad. The bombers all of these are aging. You now have a modernisation bill that congressional budget office estimates is something like half a trillion dollars so the administration will be conducting nuclear posture review. Which is a policy review of all things related to nuclear weapons. What our strategies should be. What posture should be what the four should look like. What do you want to see. Come out of that review. How do we square the circle of fundamental importance as a foundation but huge price tag if we were to modernize everything equally. Sometimes we look at a bill and say. Oh it's going to cost x. amount and we've unfortunately been in that pickle of passing that bill downstream to such an extent that now it looks tremendous to us and i would hope as we go into the nickel posh review we don't come in with some perceived notion that okay. We need this nuclear posture review in order to kill this program. We need to understand. What does it really take to have a credible nuclear deterrence capability. That's foundational to every war. Plan that we would have if god forbid we had to take on china take on russia and that's not just the platforms. It's also the nuclear industrial base that supports those nuclear weapons the industrial base shipbuilding or aircraft building or missile building. As well as the command and control capability to direct forces under duress in your worst day of communications capability so when you are strat com commander. And i have to ask this because i started my career as a nuclear arms control analyst. You're actually very supportive of strategic arms control and the biden administration came in they extended for five years the new start treaty which limits the number of strategic nuclear weapons in both the us and russia. Why strat com commander were you so supportive of arms control. What role does arms control play in this equation will arms control is hard work and to me. It is part of that. Strategic deterrence capability country. Has when you look historically at some of our successes on strategic weapons you look at how much we had in the co-ord- how much we have now. And you can look at that report card. Say we done wonderfully and reducing the number of nuclear weapons. The other piece that is important in my mind is having that ability to have some transparency into each other's capability. Even just the thing of every time you tests launch something that's intercontinental that we tell the other side before doing so and just the conversations that have to occur to get to an agreement are the kind of conversations you would want these major powers to half and those actually bring more stability. I think going forward as you listen to the national security conversations day. Is there an issue that you feel. We should be paying more attention to. That's just not getting enough. Focus or bandwidth or energy real today. As i look at the stage of competition technologically between us and for example china. We have to be careful that we can make those crisp decisions that enough time so that we can get the capability we need whether we're talking about military capability or if we're talking about that technology that we need to sustain our economic advantages going forward so this is an area that i think we as a nation need to invest more so it's not just all technical but we have to have the education system so that we can be armed as best we can with the right brains the be able to get it those problems. We don't even understand today. That will be out there tomorrow..

"According to department of defense report from twenty twenty just under half of active duty enlisted personnel. And the us military are people of color about forty seven percent. But when you look at officers. The people in leadership roles that figure drops down to twenty seven percent. I asked admiral hannah why there aren't more people of color leading the us military well. I think it's complicated. It's a very intricate piece. That goes back to not just policy. But the implementation of policy and understanding in valuing the business of diversity through out the ranks and this requires a steady attention. You can't just pay attention to it for five years and then stopped paying attention to it thinking l. k. We're successful we're done. Let's move onto the next problems. And meanwhile not understanding the sustainability efforts that have to occur there in order to get anybody up to the captain. The rear admiral to vice admiral to four star. Admiral takes a concerted effort of mentorship paying attention to who's available. Who's on the bench. And are you giving them the right experiences that you would want that individual to have at a admiral level of any number of stars. I had the opportunity to serve on an external task force for the central intelligence agency on diversity. What they were finding is they. Were very very good at recruiting representative class of entry level officers. Very close to mirroring the demographics of the united states. But if you fast forward twelve thirteen years in when people were finally being considered to their equivalent of promotion to general officer yeah senior intelligence service. A lot of the women had disappeared. A lot of the people of color had disappeared and so the study was really a systematic. Look at where are the barriers. What is the experience that is causing people to leave whether it's lack of mentorship or sponsorship whether it's implicit bias whether it's requirements that basically make impossible for women to have any children and stay competitive for promotion as operations officers for example and that it seems is what you're talking about is we need to really look at it at every step along the way very much so and that retention piece is in my mind just so critical in terms of retaining enough of whatever category. You're looking at there so that they can in fact compete and be available for the mobility. You would hope that they would have because they are sort of after you know by other companies and corporations and when i talk about just the relentless pace we sometimes have in the military in our assignments moving periodically to different areas. Uprooting your kids from different schools systems. And what have you. That can become a negative. If you don't have the other part of the positive right in terms of that person feeling valued filling that someone cures enough to sit down and tell me what. I'm doing good but what i'm doing that need to go work on so that i can be promoted in the future coming up. After the break we'll turn to national security and the future of the country's nuclear weapons.

The people with the stars on their shoulders see haney became a flag officer in two thousand five. When he was promoted to rear admiral and pinned on his first star. he retired as a full four star. Admiral having served as the commander of the navy's pacific fleet and then us strategic command as you rise in the ranks. What is your experience like. Do people become more colorblind. Because you've proven yourself clearly because you've been promoted several times. You're performing your leader. Does it get better as you get more. Senior depends so the more senior you get the more people salute say three bags full but the real key is. What are we really thinking. You know and you still within rooms where you're the only person of color and you might reflect a little bit back on that midshipmen day. Somebody there think you're there because of a quarter system. So how did your experiences sort of shape you as a leader. How did you go about creating a more equitable and inclusive environment. Under your command. The piece i think for me really got back to my roots of being in the submarine force a small crew demanding allot integrate operations. Were you really had to depend on each. And every individual the other thing it afforded you is really knowing each and every individual so the scary part is i got into bigger and bigger organizations was boy. I can't possibly know each and every individual that works for you their weaknesses etc so. I need the farm that out and make sure others are paying close attention to it but even as a leader that whole business of walking around talking to your people even up to the last job use a strategic command over one hundred fifty thousand people working. If i'd go down and get my own coffee at the cafeteria and kitsap in line and talk to people how is really going and the more senior year. Are they going to share that with you. You had to really have tactics and techniques to really get into their head. So i found when people realize that you are interested in what they think what they are doing. And you have that genuine concern. They will do all kinds of push ups for the organization because they want to be part of the team but if they don't feel that their voices heard for whatever reason whether it's because of the lack of diversity or what have you that becomes the impediment to success. They say that listening is the highest form of respect right and when people feel listened to they feel like their voices heard as you say they feel like they can contribute to the organization that success of the team that does wonders for the climate and the environment and making people feel like. They're part of it. We would be doing a planning strategy briefing. The room would be filled with a bunch of people. And you'd have the primary talker. So the other thing i love to do is say you're you're in the room here. We've been talking about this for about half now. What do you think and that individual would verse squirm a little bit but then sometimes you would get reinforcing information or you could tell from body language. That person wasn't sold. You needed to drove back in something a little bit more. Yup you know who used to do that. All the time was president obama in the situation room so my boss either secretary gates or secretary panetta would be at the table. I would be the plus one sitting behind and before he would sort of close out a meeting or make a decision. President obama would always go around the back wall. Not just at the table. But the back wall and i had this bad habit of scowling. When i'm concentrating then so i'd be sitting there scowling. So president obama and michelle. Looks like you disagree. What do you think it secretary gates. Turn around and look over his shoulder. what are you doing. But it was a wonderful way to really first of all ensure that he got the full perspective of everybody in the room heard any dissent that he needed to hear before he made a tough decision and created. That sense of you know. We're all trying to help them. Make the best decision possible. And that's what matters. No one's going to shoot the messenger if you wanna speak up and raise a different point so really element of creating a great leadership climate a command climate and i think it's very important in the military because we grew up. You know everybody. Marching in formation. Turn left here. Turn right here and getting people out of that syndrome of windy. Have to be uniform. Then when you need to really plan and really extract from everybody. What do you think. And what i'd be missing with this particular picture..

"Graduated. Nineteen seventy-eight your commissioned as an officer in the united states navy that very day very happy day. I am sure and you're signed your first submarine which happens to be named after the former vice president. John c calhoun a man who was an infamous defender of slavery in the nineteenth century. What was it like to serve aboard. A submarine called the john c. Calhoun well. It was interesting because i had to wear ball cap with that name on it all the time being. That was the namesake. You were serving on when i reported aboard. I'll give you to sort of flavors of this. I was given the opportunity to lead the electrical division and interior communications division. When i got assigned there i had chief hubbard as my leading chief. Petty officer now. Massive hubbard was not from washington. Dc he was from the great state of alabama. We were probably in such different camps but this individual was a very professional message. And i credit a lot of my start and success to us individual. Who from a diversity standpoint from growing up standpoint etc we run a sit ins of the planet but he would pull me in and we would be able to talk candidly about what needed to be done associated with making the division successful. He would say hey sir you need to go up there and tell the captain about this. You need to come here and look in this equipment. And he was just god's gift to the planet in terms of teaching young insincere. Sweney how to really do his job as a division officer in a very candidate. Polite way here. I got an individual from the south. That really showed me what good looks like so it was a great start on that submarine even though its namesake. Was john c. Calhoun the other part was of course. You know coming back home and my dad. Who would do his homework. Even though he had no college education he was an avid reader. And he'd say well why is it. Submarine named after john c. Calhoun and the i'd head. No good answer for him to be honest with you now that the military is actually in the process of changing names of bases and ships and so forth. Will that be important. Does it make a difference in terms of communicating the kind of inclusive environment. We want to create for people in the military. Oh absolutely i think it's so important today. When every individual of color goes through a gate or walks across a brow and knows that the person that this ship or this base was named on was really on the wrong side of history that to me today. I think really can twist that commitment that go get him that drive that we need our military to have aitken detract from in a bad way. It is something that we need to correct then and we definitely need to correct now. So you've already mentioned your master chief from alabama who became a mentor of sorts. How did you find mentors going forward in your career. I don't think there were too many african american officers senior officers at that point in the navy. So you know who were your mentors. What was their council to you as someone who was rising in the ranks. That started off for me when i was in my first school before reporting to that submarine john c. Calhoun myself and another individual mel williams who became vice apple before he retired. We were both classmates. And we're going through the pipeline training at the same time. A guy by the name of pete combs who became the first african american commanding officer of a submarine of the united states navy. He called us over to his lodging room and wanted to talk. We didn't know this individual. But we gotta note go over and see then. This individual was instrumental in telling us. Hey there. aren't that many of us in this separate business. I count on you to work hard and to perform don't expect any favours and keep your nose to the great so it wasn't one of these pleasant to reach kind of meetings whatsoever. But i tell you when i look back at any success you say might have had eight goes back to that conversation. We ended up. Establishing this thing. We call the centennial seven. The first seven african americans that got the command submarines in the first one hundred years of our navy submarine service and as such. We became mentors for many one of my best. Mentors was someone who gave me very tough feedback who basically sat me down and said look as the only woman in the room as someone who's gonna be trying to break into this very male environment. You can't just be as good as you have to be better and you have to go after your weaknesses and fixed them so my weakness at the time was terrified of public speaking and he put me through this program because he thought it would hold me back and he also said you have to toughen up remember him saying never let them make you cry so that sort of tough love. Mentorship was really important. No it sure is as a rose through the ranks and particularly became flag. Officer it was sorta okay now. Who will get mentoring from flag. Officers are the most senior officers in the fleet. the navy's version.

"For seasonal. So admiral haney in nineteen seventy four. You were admitted to the us naval academy a huge achievement unto itself. What was it like when you're actually. There will as a guy growing up here in concrete city of washington. Dc the one thing. I wasn't as prepared for as many other midshipmen were. I didn't know how to swim. Oh my so One of my biggest challenges coming in was going through swimming and what we called swimming sub squad. I can tell you got to learn how to swim as part of that education but it was also very busy place. You were never board there. I'll put it that way. You always challenged challenged intellectually challenged physically and as a result it was an environment that quite frankly i thrived in. So the military likes to think of itself as sort of color blind meritocracy. What was your experience in the naval academy. Did it feel like that to you or did you encounter some challenges just because people weren't used to saying a person of color in the ranks. I was not as a loon is one with think in that. We had a larger number of african americans coming into the academy so that was one too. I didn't run into what. I call a lot of blatant racism or didn't slow down enough to look for one of the two. I did have one incident where i was coming up the stairs in bancroft hall and one white midshipmen turned around to me and said the only reason you're here is because of a quota system and he was surrounded with some other white midshipmen. Nobody said anything. And i just kept going but i tell you that to may have been a blessing in disguise because i was so motivated to make sure that i was going to graduate regardless of how people thought of why i came into that school and i was going to study hard to make sure my grades were where they needed to be and leave that behind and stay focused forward toward the goal. It's amazing how comment like that can become a source of positive motivation. My own experience. My first time in the pentagon you know relatively young female democratic political appointee and my first counterpart meeting with a one star general officer who happened to be from the south. He said what's a nice girl like you doing a job like this and the assumption was the only reason you're here is because some democratic president thinks that there's a quota and women should fill these jobs but i walked away from that meeting being very determined to show him why i was there because i'm competent. I'm going to add value and so forth and he eventually turned around. But it's amazing. How this comments can actually motivate you to excel. It does but it also puts in the back of your head and every interaction. Particularly when you were the one in only in classrooms and laboratories. What are they really thinking about you. That they're not.

I know that during college he worked as a stringer for time magazine but then you abandoned the glorious heights of journalism for the muck and shadows of foreign policy. What made you interested in stepping back into the late. Now you know the honest truth is i couldn't decide which side of the interview. I wanted to be on for like ten years even when i was working in foreign policy. I was moonlighting for public television station. So what forced my hand was my first job in government which decidedly put me into the foreign policy defense policy practitioner camp and one side of the interview so we are going to hear now your conversation with retired admiral cecil haney. A lot of us have an image stereotype of what a four star navy. Admiral is like how well or poorly would you say. Admiral haney fits that stereotype. He is definitely not. The stereotype is a very humble servant leader who is a wonderful storyteller and just a very down to earth person. All right michelle flournoy. Thank you so much. It is a joy to welcome you to this little freakonomics radio network that we're building so Thanks for coming to play in our sandbox. And let's now hear your conversation with retired navy. Admiral peaceful haney stephen a moment ago. I want this show to grapple with some of the most important national security issues of the day and we'll get to those issues through the stories of people who've shaped the decisions the people who've been at the table the people who've been on the front lines executing the policy see so haney is one of those people during his four decades in the united states. Navy haney rose through the ranks as a submarine commander. Then a rear admiral and vice admiral when he took command of the pacific fleet he became one of the country's first black four-star admirals and then ultimately he became the commander of us strategic command which is responsible for all nuclear forces and global strike capabilities for the united states. He was the person on point to provide nuclear options to the president and the secretary of defense in a crisis that experience gave him some pretty unique insight into nuclear developments around the world when we look at the investments that russia and a rising china app. Today we have to look at that would eyes wide open as we look at the challenges that will come ahead. If we don't get this fright we will be perhaps boxed in a corner and if nuclear deterrence fails that will not be a good day for the united states of america in for the world. We're definitely going to talk about nuclear deterrence. I started my career as a nuclear arms control analyst that was during the cold war more than thirty years later. The challenges facing our aging nuclear arsenal are very different. He'll also talk about the. Us military needs to do to address racism and extremism and what it will take to get more people of color into leadership roles. You can't just pay attention to it for five years and then stopped paying attention to thinking okay. We're successful were done. I didn't get a chance. Unfortunately to actually serve alongside admiral haney in the pentagon. But we have gotten to know each other's serving on a nonprofit board together. And i just think the world of him as someone who was often the only woman in the room. I wondered what his experience was like as a black man coming up the ranks of the navy. So in this episode. "Someone who can reveal the hidden side of that world so we reached out to one of the smartest people in this realm michelle floor knowing a former pentagon official and one of the highest ranking women in the history of the defense department. Michelle are you there. Hi stephen get to talk to you. Nice to talk to you. So as i just mentioned one of the new projects were working on the podcast with you about foreign policy and national security. Can i ask you while we're at a. What is the relationship between those two foreign policy and national security. Which is the chicken. Which is the egg. Oh good question. We could have a lot of debates about that. I like to think that foreign policy is dealing with. All of our relationships in the world are international. Engagement and national security is really a subset. If you will of the things that really touch on the security of the united states and of americans here and abroad. I was hoping you would say that. That security was a subset of foreign policy. But then i thought you could say well without security policy becomes a totally different animal. That's probably true too. That's why we can have an hour-long debaters. So as i understand it the idea behind this new show is that you will be having conversations with policymakers and decision makers who have been in the room where it happened as lin. Manuel miranda put it in the musical hamilton. I've heard you are yourself a big hamilton fan. Are you somehow tricking us into making a foreign policy musical. I wish but i don't think any of our guests is likely to burst into song. But they all have really fascinating stories to tell and they can bring you inside a key decision or a major event as if you were in the room. So i don't mean to be cynical at least not too cynical but for the average podcast listener. Why does it matter. What's the value in knowing more about this kind of decision making because we don't have any influence every day there are policies being made and executed in our name and i think in a democracy. It's so important for citizens to understand what's happening and also understand. This is a very human endeavor. This is human beings coming together grappling with really tough situations and making the best decisions they can but often decisions that are flawed or imperfect or don't work out like they were intended young. Give me talk about afghanistan for a moment mitch. Mcconnell recently criticized president biden for pulling out of afghanistan the way he did even though the pullout was begun under the previous trump administration when i see politics and foreign policy collide as they are now with afghanistan. I'm really curious to know what that relationship is like. Between elected officials and foreign policy civil servants. There's always politics in terms of how people respond to decisions. That president makes my guess. Is that if the biden team had it to do over again. They probably would have focused on teeing up a number of things before. That decision was announced. Really pressing the negotiations to try to get a ceasefire in place. I know they were trying that. But that got cut short having a plan to take care of all of the afghans who helped the us and their families. Getting them out of harm's way having a plan for supporting the afghan national security forces from over the horizon. Having more of a plan for how we were going to deal with counter terrorism threats from over the horizon and instead the decision was made up front and then all of this has been rolling out in a way. that's much more chaotic than it probably needed to be. Tell us in general about the kind of person that you wanna talk to on this show which sectors or realms will they come from. I like to talk to people who've been on the front lines of national security. They could be policymakers from the white house they could be diplomats. They could be humanitarian. People who've done development work in crises on the ground military leaders. So they've either been at the decision making table or they've been participants on the ground in the most consequential events in recent history. We will hear from one such person in a few minutes. He's a former four star. Admiral in the navy who held tremendous responsibility in us nuclear strategy. But before we get to that conversation you had with him. Let's learn a little bit more about you because you to have been in the room where it happened. During the obama administration and to some degree in the clinton administration as well. Let's take your most senior government role in the obama administration in the pentagon missouri. Kind of thumbnail job description that you might find on ziprecruiter if job were posted on ziprecruiter which i assume it's not natural it'd be posted on ziprecruiter. The job was under secretary of defense for policy and the role is to support the secretary of defense in all of his or her international engagements to support him or her in all of their engagements in the national security council. Which is the primary decision making body or body for the president and then also to help the secretary because we're in a democracy provide civilian oversight of military strategy plans and operations. And which secretaries did you serve under. So in the clinton administration i served under les aspen and then bill perry and then william cohen and then in the obama administration under bob gates and then leon panetta talk about your day to day work in the obama administration. What was that like. So i oversaw a staff of about a thousand people. And i had oversight over three defense agencies that focused on different topics a typical day would start with an intelligence briefing then moving too often a national security council meeting either at the deputies level where the principal's level over in the white house. Then coming back maybe. So helping the secretary prepare for a foreign counterpart coming to visit in the pentagon and then maybe we'd be reviewing a war plan or a contingency plan or a proposed operation in the afternoon. Now, because of the pandemic, they've graduated into one of the worst generations when members of the class of twenty twenty half landed jobs, the experience is odd NPR's Berlin reports. Okay my friends I have been in recruiting for over twenty plus years, and if one thing I have said over and over during my career, when asked for job, search advice, it's that you can't simply apply to jobs and expect to get a callback especially right now with over forty million people who are applying to jobs daily. There is a ton of competition in as I mentioned a last week's episode You have to make it super obvious that you are the best fit for the job. If you want that job search to last and last and last and last, then just keep continuing to rely solely on. You know posting in submitting your resume online. If you WANNA move your search head. Start finding and then building a relationship and a network with the people who actually work at the company that you're interested in. So do things like schedule. Informational interviews with would be peers people. You might work with potential co workers approach maybe even an internal recruiter. For the company and just simply ask you questions you know, get on the radar of the very people who might influence you actually getting an interview, so here's your tip by connecting with people on the inside of the companies that which you want to work, you will instantly set yourself apart like there's not many people who do that. Most people just they see a job online. They read the job description. They hit the apply, and then that's it. They just wait for the automated response and maybe get a call back, maybe they. They don't typically people find jobs because of a referral, we're network, not just applying John Online and in this case, the hiring manager or the decision maker interviews people who come recommended or by way of maybe like a personal referral before they even start sorting through the massive pile of resumes that come in through the company job posting in their all nine applicant tracking system. Hundred people that work there or fifty four hundred people that work there in May. Enlist people that you might already be connected to that happen to work at that company. So you're click on that link and you're gonNA. pull up all the people that work there and you're going to do a deeper dive in the search and screen that search for other accountants that worked there or just use A. Search term like accounting or finance or whatever it is, and then start looking for people who work in that department work in that division within the company, and then start sending you know invites to connect pb. You can even connect with the hiring manager, so you're going to find somebody you're going to want to connect with. Let's say maybe they accept your connection, but that's about all the amount. The you know that's about all that you get from. Reaching out and making the invite what you WanNa do then is go over to the company's web page. Find their contact information. Make a phone call. And then you'll probably get their automated system or receptions. Ask for the person that you've just connected with, and you're going to want to put maybe a twenty four hour to forty eight hour space between the time. You connect unwilling den and the time that you do this, but then you're going to want to ask for that person. Leave a message, just say hey, so and so we connected on link Danjus recently I recently saw job. "To the fray mom John Horn for Valentine's Day weekend. Here's an idea a new movie. That might leave you contemplating the meaning of marriage. The film is called Downhill. And it's dramatic and dark comedy adapted from the Swedish movie for Moore. The Film Stars Julia Louis Dreyfuss and Will Ferrell as a couple whose family is on a European ski vacation when the resort sets off. What's supposed to be controlled? Avalanche that threatens them and their kids. Each parents reaction reveals deeper divisions in the marriage. Julia Louis Dreyfuss is also a producer of downhill. We got together at the Sundance Film Festival. A couple of weeks ago. Where the movie premiered. She said she. I discussed the idea of an American remake of force majeure with Fox searchlight back in two thousand fourteen but I had just finished making this movie enough said with them and we were talking about further projects and I said believe it or not. I said you know I'm really intrigued. By stories in which reality is seen one way and then a lens is taken off and you look at reality a completely different way within the story and they said well we just came back from con. We saw this movie. You should see this movie. Because we're trying to get the rights to it to rebuild force majeure. Yeah so I said your love to see it and so they screened it and I was utterly hooked. I remember watching force majeure on my laptop and there's a scene in which there's an avalanche and the father without giving too much way doesn't exactly do the right thing that kind of and remember when I watched it. I backed up and watch like ziprecruiter film. I went frame by frame. Like what is he really do? How does he really react? And in the original movie. It's a little vague in your version. It's not I guess. It's a little more clear in your adaptation. I'M GONNA ask about that moment and in your adaptation why that was key to amplify that choice. Well we wanted to be clear what he did but unclear as to the fallout from it. So in other words The wife in this situation play by myself is in utter shock and we wanted to unravel the sweater from that point. From a storytelling point of view. This movie is certainly about the repression of Truth and truth and denial of truth. Which is I think an interesting theme particularly right now. And denial of facts But on both ends because you know initially the couple that you know. It's a stunning moment and then rather than a direct confrontation or conversation. Even about what had happened. They don't have that because I think what happened feels unmentionable because it's so shameful and so They they begin. This is a credit to Jesse Armstrong. Who did the adaptation they begin By attacking an outside source that is to say these safety. No no no I am and so and when we first started doing this I was like we gotta get this done soon because pretty soon it's going to be implausible for me to have two young children and in fact they needed to be young because they had to you needed to feel as if they were vulnerable in the situation of the avalanche Had they been in their teens? You might have felt that they were possibly less vulnerable. Not that teenagers can't be vulnerable. But somehow being younger sir heightens the the the the sense of danger I think And then additionally we sort of wrote it into the script or pretty subtly implied that we were an older couple who decided to have children late in life Wills character refers to fertility treatments that we went through and whether or not it was going to work so this was a sort of a later in life choice for this couple which is sort of an interesting idea to what about. Well how did you end up? Casting him He read the script and he was super interested in it and I had seen stranger than fiction and was a very big fan of his work in that I mean I'm a fan of his work period. I mean the guys have stone cold genius but he was able in stranger than to embrace a dramatic tone and therefore he would be able to sort of tackled this material and then we met believe it or not. We never met before not some random. Hollywood party and we have these parallel lives you know because of SNL and Etcetera Etcetera. But no. We have lots of friends in common but we never met. We met four this project and we had a long coffee and talked at great length about the material and He hadn't seen force majeure he'd only read the script of downhill so and he was like I really want to do it and I said well before you sign on make sure you really want to watch the original you know and make sure you WanNa step. Put your toe into this water. There's a expression that a friend of mine who worked in marketing uses an. It's an overcome as like a marketing. Obstacle that a film has. This is a serious movie about marriage and it stars people who are generally known for doing comedies. You think that's an issue in terms of either people come in thinking it's GonNa be funny or people who WanNa see a dramatic film and being unsure of. Comedians can do it completely. It's been a challenge from a marketing point of view. I mean the trailer was very Intentionally I if you watch the trailer you'll see. That's not chock full of That's by design. It looked like it was going to kill us full moment. The kids were screaming because it felt like we were gonNA dot keet and he had grabbed his phone. Keep left us nice. I didn't leave you to bear. Even though there are plenty of jokes within the film I mean there are comedic beats but I would say more dramatic beats than comedic beats when I watch downhill. I went back and rewatch force majeure because I wanted to see how that movie ended and I'm not going to talk about what specifically happens in the ending of your film. There's a scene in both films ski run and there's a scene in your film that is new. That is I. Think my favorite scene in the movie where there's a conversation about what will Ferrell's character can do and it feels like a really interesting way to end the movie. I'm wondering about that scene about its importance in how you try to figure out how the movie should end totally without talking about what she says to her husband. Well I think that we wanted. We did not want the movie to end up with a neat little bow. We wanted to have ambiguity at the end of this film. I think it's safe to say that people might leave the theater thinking either. This couple is gonNA work it out or maybe this couple Is got a real problem on their hands and I think. Both truths are acceptable It's up for. She makes a decision and I think it's questionable decision. Okay I mean you know as a standing outside of it. I can understand why she did it but I'm not sure it's exactly the right thing to do in that moment but that's okay because They're trying to crawl their way out of this mess and this is their kind of muddy messy way of doing it. And you know it's up for discussion as to whether or not it's the right. The right move. I really liked playing that scene because I understood why she would come to that conclusion. But it was very important to me in this in the film that we made that this character that I played was flawed Because I we didn't want it to be a movie about you. Know sort of cowardice and masculinity and just that it needed to be a little more balanced and that was important to me and the wife character in our film makes a couple of pretty miserable decisions.

Hbo My son discovered eleven twenty to sixty three on Hulu which got us to Hulu Amazon prime comes with our prime but I enjoy to catch up on Downton Abbey in advance of the the a new movie coming out and obviously met flex is what's on tonight but I find that we're not using them as much as we probably should to get the value. We're really busy see family so when we do have time to watch something you know. We're generally going to a streaming service. We need something on demand. We don't you know we can't we can't schedule around regular programming grandma so I guess my question to you. A meth Rebecca you Jefferson is do you have recommendations for busy. Families like mine who maybe were oversubscribed at this point but we wanna be able to watch what we want to when we do have that valuable family time I think most people have these services and don't know why they don't open them up even yeah. I would say they take a list. Open it up. Start writing down what you actually want to watch and you're probably be surprised to find. It's not that much that it's easy enough to cancel Certainly you know you can always bring it back. You know what's on right now that you really want to see because I know that Netflix has so when he shows that I am just I don't know what to do. How about you. I think that's a good point again now. That game of thrones is over. I don't know that we need. HBO Even though I've just discovered succession Russian but I'm not sure I'd pay for just for a succession but I think that's a really good advice. If the show you you bought it for his over go ahead and counsel and if there's another one that comes along you can sign back up. I think everything about succession is come back in three months. Watch them all you don't have to wait every week yeah and you just saved thirty thirty forty-five sixty dollars. That's a great idea and again on Hulu. We had that one show and it's run its course. I also think he was watching Flash Gordon or one of those. You know teen game shows but once he's over with that you're right. We don't have to continue it. I know it sounds pretty obvious but sometimes we just let things go because that's human age. The problem with humans is that it takes. It's more work to actually go and disconnect you. Just leave it there and then sometimes you look at your credit card bill and say well. I spent one hundred and eighty dollars on Netflix this year. I didn't didn't need to do that. Did I right exactly and you know every penny counts and so I think that's really good advice to do an audit of your streaming services council the ones you're not using knowing that you can start them back up. Ding you later with hidden resort fees and taxes so when I wrote an article about it this week for USA Today Day I asked Jonathan Schwab as the senior policy counsel for consumer reports what we could do about those fees and he told me there was only one option cut the cord and the fees would go away. I have some words of advice as well. Check your cable bill right now because when I took a look doc my bill was a steady in reasonable one hundred eight dollars and ninety one cents monthly until this month when it jumped to da Da da a hundred hundred and fifty four dollars a whopping five hundred and fifty two dollar yearly increase frontier communications my Los Angeles provider jacked up the Combo Internet. TV Rate from seventy five to ninety stopped offering HBO for Free Which Ballooned Up to twenty dollars and threw in a nice broadcast TV of twelve bucks to watch local channels and taxes went up to really when I called frontier complain they pretty much refused to budge saying that I had a promo rate that no longer was valid so basically I two choices cancel service altogether and re sign up under my wife's name which would now oh get me to a promotional one hundred thirty dollars monthly for what we had or disconnect altogether so I picked up a fifty dollar. You're watching your Internet service rate from frontiers. La rival spectrum and I have a router arriving hopefully today fees spectrum itself is notorious for digging us with extras like the ten dollar self installation fee they are charging me to plug in a router and to call them confirm that I indeed have service. The alternative is fifty dollars to have a technician. Come to the house and do the work and for cable subscribers. It's good to know that they do that. Twelve dollar monthly broadcast as well and it's growing at thirteen dollars and fifty cents monthly later this month I signed up for the one year plan so hopefully I got fifty dollars a month for that one year. I'll also be adding youtube. TV The Cable Alternative Service to replace the cable channels this this is fifty dollars monthly which is pretty hefty but the wife will kill me if I can't get her news channels and PBS which is coming to YouTube td later this year so so in the end. I'm going to be paying one hundred dollars monthly instead of one hundred and eight dollars monthly which really isn't much of a savings at all but I'm not about to give frontier the satisfaction this faction of nearly six hundred dollars hard in dollars every year for no good reason read your cable bills everybody cutting the cord fans no. I could've skipped up YouTube TV or slaying or playstation Vue or who live TV and just bought an antenna the pickup local channels in really saved but if you're a fan of cable able channels like FX AMC HGTV CNN ESPN and on and on you got to pay the Piper with one of the cable TV alternative services I I could live without them and just watch regular Youtube Netflix Amazon and be the happiest guy in town but I live alone. We've got Edward Big here from USA Day. Just attended the repented York head. Tell everybody about this new phone well. I should probably start by saying Microsoft. Leave or not is is Lowe's to call this thing the phone the they're they're referring to as a surface which of course is the name of of their line of very hardware products. The actual name is surface duo and it looks like a phone acts like a phone my mom nine the phone. It's an android device can do all the android apps and guess what can make phone calls. We don't know yet in Tech. The product is is more than a year away due out and holiday twenty twenty so so Microsoft isn't talking about pricing at this stage it's really a prototype also have some wireless ear buds which are very popular this year. Tell us about those yeah I got to put them in my ear. these are surface ear buds. They're not cheap the two hundred and forty nine dollars which is more for for for example then you pay for Apple Air Pods I got to put him in my ear. They seem reasonably comfortable. You know you you you really want to try when you're out and about which I didn't get to do yet they sounded okay and in a very noisy noisy room where Microsoft showed them off it does I do some interesting things beyond listening to music though for example you could manage your outlook calendar with your voice and even dictate live captions into into a powerpoint powerpoint presentation which I tried and that worked pretty well. It's pretty impressive. Of course it's always internet dependent connectivity dependent so they're trying to play this up to almost as productivity device that you can wear all the time in addition to listen to music and they obviously had some new service computers. What's the one big service computer you WANNA. Tell us all about well. There were a few of them mostly terrific improvement on on them. They do have a new one. That's called the surface pro to chew in one. It's got an edge to edge thirteen inch display. It starts at around a thousand dollars coming November fifth well. It sounds like as we look to the holidays. The ear buds would be the product that people might want to look at the most host. Utah correct me I mean what did you walk out of their most impressed with well. It appears what they tell you that yes. Our BEG got his hands on it. He's going to tell us all about so two thousand nearly two thousand dollars for a very large eventual phone worth it. It's hard to say any phone. It's worth nearly two thousand dollars. you know I can't recommended at that price. you're paying. You're you're really looking at an early early. adopter who has a fair amount of money who wants to be the first on the block with something and and it's GonNa pay for that privilege and with that take on the risk of aversion point one. We call version point one. Oh but it's really Samsung second try at this because they were gonNA launch it back in April and of course they were screen issues and other problems that emerged and they had to delay the launch until until now. Why don't you tell people why they'd even be interested in fault well. The idea is that you you have this thing. It's a it's a kind of a Chunky Candy Bar Style phone that you can keep in your pocket rocket like you do any other phone you you like we carry around but you then put out of your pocket and there's a screen on the outside again. It's it's a Nick Candy Bar phone but then you can unfold it and suddenly you have a small tablet with a screen that is seven point three inches lot more real estate than you get even on one of these very large tablet size phones which which have become very common you get all let extra screen real estate so the idea you can have a small talbot but you really carrying around a phone feel like there's a tablet in your pocket or a phone. No no it shall like a phone I mean that's the good news it's it's a bit chunky ways a little more than nine ounces so it's not the latest phone around but it didn't bother me to have it in my pocket. you know I had a bigger objection. Frankly that the price and the actual product itself although the product is not perfect you know and there are times. When you're you know I'm I'm commute on a bus. I'm browsing the web and watching video and it's nice to be able to do that on a screen. That's that's pretty big seven point three inches franchise well. That's the big question you know. They had to postpone the launch again because of issues with with the I attempted this I didn't have any break it. Nothing broke on my watch. I'm happy to report when you open the when you unfold like a paperback and you've got this screen feels a little plastic and you actually see this crease in the middle of the screen where the thing full doesn't bother me that much you kind of get used to it pretty quickly. Samsung claims it has done all the repairs. That will make this thing adorable. I'd I D- Having said that the first thing you see when you actually open the box and then on boxes care instruction sheet with all kinds of warnings don't put too much pressure sure on the on the screen you know you know watch out for for dust and debris and all these things so Samsung is being very cautious here here and it makes you wonder. How fragile is this thing but I'm happy to report in my several days of having one it did not break. We'll see what happens. The phone is available now. Correct yet is available now in the US it actually launched in South Korean some other places before it came out here in the US who asks but is now available in the US. You can get it at eighteen. You can get an unlocked version at best buy but again you're GONNA pay nineteen hundred eighty bucks for it. Already will good luck phone buyers. I'm Jefferson Graham. The smartest way to hire apple has revamped its long maligned apple maps APP in resolve is way better experience. Let me tell you all about it. On today's edition of Talking Tech. I'm Jefferson Graham. Let's speaking with the positives apples in a different business than Google and thus is less eager to grab at your personal information use Google maps and Google well has the inside track to following your every move even if the APP is closed apple does offer personalized data but it gets it from the device ice not the cloud and thus only uses random identifiers to get to it not your apply d. This is a big deal now. My favorite feature sure in apple maps is way better spoken directions instead of being told that turn left at thousand feet. I get turn at the next light. This is way less confusing to some of US behind the wheel. Now the maps update looks better with more transit and ride share information. That's great but while apple offers as you rideshare possibilities from just Uber Google has uber and lift Google offers bike routes as well which apple doesn't do for ninety five percent percent on my test drive around Los Angeles Apple maps was right on sending me streets in routes that made sense with plenty of time to make my turns until it didn't I was directed to make a slight right on a busy street when in fact it was a hard real right. Turn this set me down the street. I didn't need to be on on and then I was crossing through town on side roads. That just didn't make sense. I cannot prove that this route took longer than it would have with Google but gosh it it sure felt that way. And I mean, that's that's such a such a broad powerful kind of statement because technology. Is so ingrained in in our lives. Right. We probably at this point taken for granted. We don't realize just how impacted our lives are by technology because we're stuck in the middle of it all the time. So so it's an important question. I think people don't have a lot of reason a lot of the times to look outside of it. You can't see the forest for the trees how that saying goes. So are you are you optimistic about where we are headed as as relates to kind of the direction of technology right now it promises so much. But we also here, you know, there are a lot of I don't know a lot of downsides. The that are that might be. Horizon. What's your pessimism? Yeah. Well, you know, I I would say that I may recovering techno utopian, but. But I'm certainly still a techno optimist. I mean, they right. That's my nature. I think that I'm I'm I'm generally optimistic person as as a general rule, and I do think that with sending things on the right course, and with the rate kind of attention paid and notice paid, and you know, constant checking in that technology can be kept on a positive path and not veer off into dire consequences, which, you know, as as as we've seen can have have, you know, very profound consequences. And I think that you know, a lot of the things that have happened recently have made us much more alert to this. So I would say it's guarded optimism that I have turns the future of technology. Do you feel that you know, we we keep hearing the word the words regulation, and you know. As relates to technology feel like tech technologists people who are, you know, behind even the largest companies largest technology companies are very used to living by the move fast break things, it doesn't matter like we just keep moving build the audience, and then figure out how to pay for it. How how to fund it later? All these these ethos that would that have come into developing technology to the point that it is now and by the way it worked really well. And now, suddenly maybe it worked too. Well, depending on how you look at. Do you feel that that like regulation is is the way that that we kind of rain this back in or or technology, or are these companies sh- would they be willing to can't control themselves without it unfortunate because you know, as as anybody in the valley, we'll tell you working with a great deal of latitude and freedom is very important to the active invention. And I think it's been one of the strengths of the valley. Right. Is that we've we haven't. We haven't been overly regulated. Right. And unfortunately, we've kind of you know, proven that we're not so great at self regulation. This is not this is not something that we were. We've proven ourselves able to do. And you know, it's really unfortunate because all of us in the valley, we know, and we we trust, and we live for that kind of you know, freedom that we've enjoyed for, you know, so many years, and is that coming to an end, it seems as if you know, there's there's increasing moves as regulation..
