"From traditional financial world, like serving funds or pension funds and some smaller smaller smaller financial institutions. And also we got LP from Internet sector or we have several which are Internet giant and also we got some LP from vertigo industries like gaming industry or other manufacturing industry. So well, most of them are from traditional industries. So it's a very great to see a trend. That's those traditional companies or traditional family offices are also looking for synergies in web three and blockchain space. So yeah, it's a good trend for both traditional industry and for crypto space. And we will definitely see more of these two world. Yeah, it's interesting that you've got such a wide range of LPs, right? And different institutions and family offices and from both the web three world and with two world zhao. And given that last year, 2022 was such a volatile turbulent year in crypto with the collapse of some fairly big organizations and institutions such as everyone from €3 capital to Celsius to FTX and as a result of that, you know, obviously we had a fairly intense market crash of crypto winter however you want to characterize it. But do you think are you saying there's still a lot of an appetite out there amongst these institutions and family officers scattered around the world to effectively deploy new capital still into the market with a longer term view? Yeah, the short answer is yes.

"Does FUD come into this conflict? So everybody who's anybody in crypto has thrown around the suggestion of FUD. Zhao has a huge Twitter following he's got like 8 million or 7 million followers. I haven't I'm not exactly a witch. But he's constantly any time anyone writes anything negative, you know, he's calling FUD. We saw about a month ago, it was kind of his tweet in response to these coin desk reports. The coin desk reports were about, you know, this shaky balance sheet, sandbank and freed and his colleagues are denying it, zhao comes in and says, hey, this looks really concerning. We're going to sell our FTX tokens called FTT. And that sets off this run. And in some sense, right, zhao is spreading what a crypto person would call FUD on another sense. He's acting as a whistleblower. He's exposing a actual flaw. Now, and so I think it's important, you know, we've got to make that distinction. But since then, zhao has kind of seemed to do the same thing to a couple of other exchanges, which is interesting. And perhaps telling, he a couple of weeks ago, he sort of went after coinbase suggesting that coinbase was shaky. Coinbase course is based in the U.S., has audited financial statements. Serious charging deleted the tweet. Same thing with kraken and other reputable exchange. And you also deleted that tweet. And I think what's going on is you have the FTX collapse and that's creating potential sense of panic in the market, potential legal vulnerability. It's also, it's also shrinking the market and it's creating an opportunity for somebody like binance or coinbase or cracking or any of these people to consolidate and to get customers. In that sense, an opportunity, but it's also shrinking the market dramatically. So you kind of have a sense, the lights just came on, and there aren't enough chairs. They're all trying to find a chair. It is such an important point. Go to Bloomberg dot com, check out max's story. We got to run max champion, always giving us something else to think about. Mike grew up in communist China. He survived the cultural revolution, and he was a legal immigrant to the United States. He came in 1992, the website is Asian American for education dot org, Asian American for education dot org. And the book critical race theory and work culture, critical race theory and work culture. Mike, welcome to the podcast, I'm delighted to have you, you know, we're familiar with this woke ideology in the United States. And of course, a Supreme Court is taking up this issue of affirmative action. I'm actually happy to see, but I think what you bring to this debate is a not only an intellectual knowledge, but a personal experience of China, of the Chinese cultural revolution, and of an attempt to install a kind of socialist ideology throughout a whole society. Talk a little bit about your background and your experience of the Chinese cultural revolution. And then we can look to see if there are some similarities or traces of it that we can find in a different form here in the United States. Thank you for having me. I grew up in communist China, doing cultural revolution. My father suffered a political persecution. He lost freedom of the 6 years and he was a torture and he extended the whole family because my grandparents simply they were used to as I used to be land laws. There were deprived of the right to continue living in the city were forced to relocate to poor mankind villages, where there was no head walker, no factories, no nearby crane. My grandma suffered a heart attack months later and died years later because this kind of political persecution and extreme poverty and my mom also passed away. So I do it extreme poverty, political persecution in China. In 1992, I escaped to America and as I work all the way become directed global planning at the sameness energy, achieve the mind country.

I'm holding it as about 50% of my portfolio. So that tells you where I'm at. Okay, it's about 50% of your portfolio. Are you adding at this point? Yes, I'm moving to add at the moment. I was speaking to someone who works at binance. And I put it to them. How do we know that binance is not as vulnerable to the kind of misdemeanors alleged misdemeanors at FDX? We don't. And his answer was, we don't. It has to be, it has to be and it comes down to your trust in CZ or zhao Jiang, who is the CEO and founder of binance. There's no indication at all that there's been any wrongdoing at binance, but that's a trust issue, isn't it? There needs to be a regulatory framework that addresses that. That's correct. Yeah. And I think that what they've built with Biden and smart chain is a pretty interesting counterpart to what they're doing with the centralized exchange because binance smart chain is a decentralized protocol where you can hold your BNB coins or use smart contracts to create protocols and decentralized applications and decentralized finance right on top of binance smart chain without having to trust CZ. Biden isn't a pretty good position. I think that they're gaining in market share over this entire thing. We've seen huge inflows into their exchange So I don't worry about CZ. What do you think of those going to be the regulatory fallout? I mean, there are a whole host of issues that are going to be addressed. For example, here in the UK, things like celebrity endorsements and so on. I mean, that's like a big top line, very visible thing. But nuts and bolts. What do you think regulators? What do you think is going to be the regulatory pushback as a result of this? Yeah, there's a saying in Washington and I even heard this from a politician who I won't name at the moment. Literally he told me, well, there's a saying in Washington that we never let a good crisis go to waste. And he said to me with a straight face, which I couldn't believe, but the point is that they're going to use it to for their own nefarious purposes. What's clear to us in the crypto industry is that the SEC has been negligent. And completely, they completely dropped the ball. This looks very bad on them. They're going after innovators like libre, who's created a decentralized video marketplace to rival YouTube. And they're going after ripple labs and meanwhile, they've been cozying up to the likes of Celsius and FTX. And the problem is with politics in general is that politicians are in power for a very short amount of time, and they're always thinking about their next career move. Case in point, the previous SEC chairman Jay Clayton, I was very anti crypto. He never approved any sort of Bitcoin ETF, even though all of the pieces were in place. He also declared that all cryptocurrencies are securities or something along those lines, which basically puts it under his purview, right? This is him grabbing power. The moment he was out of office, he was hired by a web three. VC fund. So literally, and this is the same story that happened with the bit license that the guy who crafted the bit license, then created an advisory firm to help his clients get around the bit license. The revolving door, there's so many different pieces to this puzzle before you go. I just want to get one in on grayscale, which operates, I believe, one of, if not the only listed ETF tracking tracking crypto, specifically Bitcoin, they've had a terrible year to date, performing worse than the actual current, the actual Bitcoin itself. Are you concerned about the fallout for grayscale? They've been lobbying hard very hard for regulatory easing around their products. Well, grayscale has been around the bush a few times. This isn't their first bear market. I think that one of the hallmarks of all of those companies that collapsed or they were the newer companies that really took off within the bull market, the free money environment. And I think that the kraken and Gemini and all of the industry incumbents, they know how to handle these things a lot better. Okay, Matty, we're going to have to leave it there. Thank you so much for coming in and speaking to us. Yeah, it really great to have you on. We've had a whole series actually of crypto guests on the program this morning and just to kind of remind at least Colleen, who has found a managing partner of the Bitcoin focused venture firm still mark was with us also Alexander Brant, and Glenn Goodman, who's a crypto consultant attor, and then of course just ending this morning the Greenspan founder and CEO of quantum economics. What do we do? Before we get to the big interview, what? We also have big news that they may not have heard about yet. So here we might want to share about this so you know, many of the listeners of bad crypto, people who are tuning in right here, over the years, we have given you bad coin. We originally set it up on bit shares, which is the same, which is the blockchain. By the same guy who built steam and built Eos. And so we went on bit sharers and we set up bad coin and I think we've created over 5 billion of them and given out to our fans and whatnot over the past year and a half, two years. And had a lot of fun with that, but we thought, what would happen if we could make bad coin mineable what would happen if we could make a brand new blockchain and, you know, because we discovered a problem, we've chatted with so many folks over the past two years. And one of the key things we discovered was Bitcoin is not fair when it comes to mining. You have people like jihan Wu and some of these large scale mining operations that just have hundreds and thousands of computers just mining Bitcoin all day long, 24 hours a day. And then it's impossible for the little guy to mine. Like when Bitcoin started, I was able to mine. I turned on my laptop. I installed the blockchain and I started mining and I mined a block. I got 50 Bitcoin. And then I went to I went to a faucet, I got another 5 Bitcoin, and then I lost it all because I threw away my computer after it crashed and I forgot about the Bitcoin because it wasn't working anything. But you can't mind Bitcoin on your laptop anymore. You can't mine Ethereum really on these. And so what bad going is, it is a blockchain that is a hybrid of 5 blockchain algorithms. It's a multi chain that we are launching next month and it's pretty much ready to go now.

What Wyoming Primary Voters Are Saying About Liz Cheney
"Here we are in August and August is also the month in which we have the Wyoming Republican primary. And that means it looks like zhao do Liz Cheney. She is on her way out and everybody kind of knows it. CNN knows it. ABC News knows it based on a recent report, the federalist knows it based on a recent article. These are conversations that these media outlets are having with people in Wyoming and they're stopping random people at like, well in the case of the federalist was the midsummer cowboy festival. Liz Cheney, by the way, made a kind of cami or appearance and then rushed off to do her quote important January 6th committee work. But the woman who hung out and spent a lot of time at the festival was her opponent. This is. Harriet hagerman, who is leading Liz Cheney by, let's see, 25 points, 25 to 30 points depending on which poll you consult. And even Liz Cheney seems to kind of recognize that she's done because she said recently on CNN quote, if I have to choose between maintaining a seat in the House of Representatives or protecting the constitutional republic, look at this woman's grand illusions or delusions. And ensuring the American people know the truth about Donald Trump, I'm going to choose the constitution and truth every single day. So this is basically a politician who has, well, it's not just that she's lost her political marbles. I think what's happened is she has alienated herself so completely that her career move now is to seek opportunities in a completely different direction.

I don't think they have a motivation for me to talk with them. I think it just have to You know think about how how concerned their inches Conversation more interesting for them like for. Oh i hear elect somebody is. I think that is really interesting and then have you heard about. This is more like an information. Facilitator it's like you know you. You need to trade information with bitcoin miners at the that the minor so that they can you can have meaningful unproductive conversation so you kind of glean inside from from the minors. So that's kind of like you know how i you talk to them. Yeah no that makes sense. I guess kind of they need some incentive. I guess to talk and maybe exchanging information as a great idea that will you know. You're talking with minors all week. Long is as sort of the the experience you've had also end like how may be has received more media focus on mining now than ever before so clearly some someone's talking to the media and like how is that dynamic change in terms of who wants to talk to you and he doesn't How do you kind of incentivize or cajole people to open up and share stories and information with you about buying and trusting question. I think it's like The of the years like their mentality is special in china was making money quietly like if you can make money and make profit without making any fuss. Why would you make any of us. Why would you want anybody to know that you're making money. So the more people into the game the less profit. You're gonna share of the pie. "Eric might say you nice to see you. It's been a long time. Hasn't adjust and the world has changed hundred eighty degrees since we lost met each other. Well here in vietnam. We haven't had much covert so we don't have any vaccines by the way but we have no kovin. So i don't know is that okay. I'd rather have no covert no vaccines and covert vaccines. Well that is the major update. Because you've already let the cat out of the bag that you on now in vietnam yeah so. We laughed in twenty nineteen. So right before you and i spoke when right around that time was when when we left exactly. I alluded to in our chat saying that. I got you at a busy time. But i did not mention at that time that it was literally three days before. You're leaving the country. That was my party. Gift to china was to speak. Well tell me then so what happened. Why are you now in vietnam. Well i was working for an american advertising agency with an american clients and that american client was all run by chinese managers and they came to us and said we do not want anybody on our account who is not chinese. Red nationals is was not a racial thing. It was a national thing. When you leave you obviously lose your visa. And so i could have probably found something but it wasn't as exciting as what i came up with which is to take the china africa project. Which is this thing. That i talked about with you. Prior that i've been working on for ten years and then go full time with it and it's been just a roller coaster and exciting and fun and being here in vietnam allows me to be right over the border from china. So i'm in the same time zone. I'm close to people on chat discussions and at the same time as a journalist and as an independent writer about china. I don't face the same pressures. As if i was in china and that has been nice it takes a little bit of that anxiety i never really self centered myself that much but now i don't have to think about it at all right and you saying that actually had been a side hustle for you while you had that job in appetizing. But then what is it now. Yes so i really enjoyed it. I'm glad i did it. I'm glad i'm not in that business anymore. My my roots and my heart are in editorial journalism which i've been doing for thirty five years. And so what i saw. The trend was that. I don't need to go work for cnn again or for the bbc again. If i want to tell the stories that i want there are platforms out there. That i can just do it myself. And i had already built an audience of one to one and a half million followers on social media. And so i said okay. Let's find a way to monetize. Eight tiny tiny percentage of that audience a half of a percent a quarter of a percent. In if i'm able to do that i would have a perfectly fine living. And that's what i've done so relaunched. The website created daily newsletter also created podcast and giving consulting services and talking to people most of it though comes down to this newsletter and i spend almost twelve hours a day to produce this newsletter. Which is crazy. I start every day at five thirty or six in the morning. And i don't stop until nine or ten at night and yet it never feels difficult but if i was working that much for any of my old employers i would be burned out and frustrated and i would just be so annoyed all the time but because we're building something here that's what makes it fun and exciting and that's the thrill of it. Yes it's not a lot of money right now but it's a five year plan and that's the key to success that i find in the media business particularly in this. Social media. era is just persistence. Yeah well going back to our episode at the end of. You're not gonna make these sing again. Are you now progressed. In many my kariuki tune. So i'm not going to embarrass you anything like that. But at the end of the interview you said that one of the best new sources you liked where the guys that sub china and the cynical podcast and then learn behold half a year to a year later your body will join them yes. I'm so i'm part of their podcast network. Those guys are great. Jeremy gold corn kaiser gore firstly whereas my find three. Because i put you guys together. Did you really. Wow you're finder's fees the next time. I come to shanghai out for frozen yogurt expected free. So yes we joined the sinica network. Last year we saw a podcast audience grow by twenty six percent. And i think that is all because of this china affiliation. And it's been a great partnership in the work that those guys do just rockstar in my view. Great well i'm going to be releasing this update at the same time as the episode where jiao whaling. Who was the person who commended for season. Two joining represents that really exciting part of the china africa relationship that needs to be celebrated more that people making connections on the individual level when she travels throughout africa. She's been there for a long time. She knows people know her. And it's amazing how quickly people can transcend the cultural and language divides with the right attitude these perceptions that we create about each other through the news and through geopolitics breakdown quite quickly. When you're on the ground talk wailing is really just living proof of that. Encourage everybody to go onto youtube to see the video that she's made and the way she is in those videos is literally the way she is in real life. Nice well thank you for the referral. And thank you for being part of this project. Eric i feel like i can fake being serious with you and you can fake being fatuous let me know and it's wonderful because i remember in you and i had lunch djing on and you were saying i'm gonna start this podcast and i was like okay. Everybody says they're gonna start a podcast and then what they do is they. Start the podcast and three four five episodes into it. All of a sudden they get busy. It just kind of falls off. That is ninety. Nine percent of the people who start either blogs social media or podcasts. And i'm just so proud of what you've done with this show. Ninety percent of the people on the internet are consumers of content only nine percent of people on the internet our editors editors of the people who actually get in and comment and actually just modify somebody else's content only one percent of the people on the internet are creators. And the fact is that you've been able to do this for more than a year puts you in an even more elite group. Because i think that's the one tenth of one percent and that's really neat and so you should be proud of it. I should be proud of it. We should anybody who's stuck with this for as long as we have should really celebrate that because it is. It's not easy to do. it's not easy. Well thank you man. I am going to oversee all about. Because i can't accept praise from you. Know you must keep it in will be very disappointed if you don't. I'm recording here. And i will publish it essa eric. I hope it's not too long before we are sharing bears either on a beach in vietnam or here in jing on again. Well hopefully if. I have a chinese vaccine thrust into me. Then i'll be up there in shanghai's hopefully sooner than later all right man greater for you. Okay cheers bye..

"Think the work has actually made me more pessimistic because i set out with a particular purpose of doing good but the more involved you get into it you realize the limitations of what you as an individual can do you realize how much more inequality an urines is out there and you wonder if dots the trajectory of us species at something i've been thinking about. I hear you. I think if you didn't feel that way you probably have your head in the sand. This year everyone who is surviving is doing so on the barest thread of sanity right now. Barest thread of positivity. And i think we are all getting on with it. We're putting on a brave face. But i i think most of us are inside thinking. Wow where is the world going right. All i would say to. You is just to think of this year as a blip and hopefully we will all come out of it a bit more positive when things are a little less fraught and there's less of an excuse to throw blame across borders. But i share the same view but i'm twenty years older than you. I want to encourage people like you. Who have been so positive in. Have been pushing yourself out there to inject positively into the world to not focus on the negative which even people like me exude but to focus on the likes of like the greta books out there. The people who are younger who do represent the next generation who can hold my generation and my parents generation to account and say well. No this is not the world that my generation will stand for nine people who are generation x. Which is minded. We're stuck in between the boomers right right and you millennial type we look more towards you like we are stuck we really we mean you and that's where i really hope that you will continue what you're doing even though it's just one voice. Maybe maybe what it needs is more of an orchestra. More of a quiet of voices to create more of annoys that we need. Because we do need people like you. I think on the end of the day. I ask myself does the fact of knowing if i'm not able to change the world does da stop me from being passionate about these causes wanting to tell their stories. It doesn't so you still have to continue doing what you do. Well that's a great way to end off of this discussion. Thank you hailing welcome. We will now move onto part two. Okay so let's go onto the ten questions. I'm mickey forty onto say okay question one. What is your favorite china related fact so my favorite thing about china is safety before moving back to shanghai living in new york usa coming back to shanghai going back home at any hour of the day. I want you know it was such a luxury to me. That's right and it's funny because new york has improved. It's definitely still edgy. It definitely got his edge question to do. You have a favorite word or phrase in chinese. Oh okay so there. Assist new thing hol long. Chin-lung it describes the millenniums chin-lung literally translates to wave came before and then hold on it translate to waves came after so. I consider myself chin-lung you do. Yes because because the kids who are considered whole long are basically eighteen by now. So that's just something funny. That's been trending on the chinese social media man if your chin lung than what the hell am i. I must be like in the middle of the ocean. There's no wave involved didn't make the ways is that basically millennial is an equivalent visit howard different concept. I'll say it's a new concept. So basically describes the culture gap between different age groups right so a kid that's eighteen. He's talking about a particular way of dressing or an underground culture. I don't understand. He might just finish the conversation saying you should see a long. Ooh that's just it you you can't that's just it internet culture. It's terrible everywhere around the world. This was made famous by billy billy data so. They made a marketing video for their platform to position themselves as a platform for the melons. Yes the young kids okay. That's why i'm not billy. I bet you have an account there because my head. I'm like i'm so eighteen christian three. What's your favorite destination within china. United local who beautiful. There's big lake. We watched a some rising that and then we went to this very famous national park. It was very pristine gresture. Four if you left china for good what would you miss the most. And what would you miss. While what i miss. The most convenience was allie pay was allama. No my mind. Okay what. I would miss the most the chinese food okay. But that's too obvious i know. But they're certain courage her sticks to the food alike so it's something soupy hot which is basically you know translate to comfort. Food for me was. Coriander has to have coriander yes. Very flavorful can be a bit spicy ya not shanghainese food. They right now. Shanghainese food anything. Bush on high. And what about the least. What would you miss the least so i think the least will be the limited access to platforms like youtube instagram. Wink wink wink wink. We all know why. We can't access these things in china unless there's a special magic fairy exactly yeah. Is there anything that still you about. Modern life in china pace of life I still feel on a daily basis. I have to learn a great deal to catch. Up was the millenniums to know how to speak their language in order to communicate with them she had low ten lunch up on all of this. What is your favorite place to go to eat or drink or just hang out this little coffee shop downstairs. My house nice I would go with my coffee. Monk it's basically a coffee shop where the owner is a serious biker fan so sometimes i'm sitting there surrounded by all these really serious bias. They're wearing these heavy. Leather jacket was like whoa. I feel like i'm part of their little subculture. What is your favorite we chat sticker. So it's my newly favourite sticker. It's a smiley face. But it's a very awkward smiley face with the is twitched up. Basically you know debrief faced. We have to throw on us. Adults in this world knowing the negativity is out there. You.

"Less thinking for people to just click my. Yeah yeah which is not going. You're going for a big holiday right west africa right okay. So how do you think now. The image of africa in china has changed. What are the images that chinese people in general still have of africa. If you speak on the basis of how you think people in africa lift. A lot of the misconception has remained. Because i get a lot of questions like oh when you guys were in ghana. Did you guys where clothes i mean. Did you have cars so a lot of these questions. I still get asked. I'm like did you ever consider. There was also an urban life in africa. Which is very very vibrant. They actually get really shocked one of the first flocks i made was just simply me going out in narrow we go into the. Party's going to the clubs you know hanging out with artists. People are like wall. Never thought of that. Yeah that's interesting. It's this funny mix. Actually you can see the ignorance but at the same time you can also appreciate the curiosity like right. You don't want to completely throw cold water over that curiosity you don't i mean i've also learned through my process of creating content. How to address these khanna questions. Because before i would just get so mad but i've also learned was my responsibility to address it and hopefully turn them into a more positive perspective right of seeing this. Yeah and this is kind of why i look at you as an more successful better version of what i'm trying to do for people who don't understand china because you know part of what i'm trying to do is to have the image of a well. Yes there are some things which you might disagree with fine but if you just go down to the people people are all the same might right. The amount of prejudice there is against chinese people is massive out there as well. And that's half the reason why i asked you about how you do it because i also don't know how to do it and i thought you might have better on some than i do. Yeah i i definitely don't have the answer to that. We also have to hold a media responsible. You know if we can ask every media. i'll let to exercise their journalistic moral. Maybe we would have an audience which is more objective and willing to look at the bigger picture of things and is that what you are achieving in your way with your wlac. like what. Been the feedback that you've received from the web that you do. They're encouraging from people who actually do have a very great impact in the dialogue dumb speaking in like eric from china africa project down to people who haven't heard any discussion regarding china africa topic meal. What do your family say about your project My parents are always supportive with everything. I've done So yeah they're super happy right and so is this now your full time gig you still working in your daytime. It's let's say my part time garrick because the goal for this year was really to focus on tourism now given the colva nineteen. It's hard to make a sustainable business out of it. It's on ice right nice. It's nice guy. But i'm trying to find different mechanisms to tell the same story so for example closed. I'm wearing i started just started a fashion brand using african fabric. There's a huge amount of great african fashion brands and They seem a bit intimidating for the chinese audience. Because you're very loud too bold so it's taking elements of those expressions but infusing them in a more practical and everyday wear format great so that's the essence behind the fashion project. It selling quite well This was something that came out of cove. Nineteen and you designed it. I designed it a. Did you get it manufactured. You saw the factories here yes. I found a factory input on actually amazing to have something which is unique. And which has your eye on. The shanghai take on african fashion. I can see the story straight away. Might tell me what the brand of vlag is and then does your fashion brand already have a name. Yes so the name of the log is wailing. Tiny fey is actually a play on word because fe ing chinese stands for flying as a verb. But it's also facial the fe sell. It's a play on word that basically says willing takes to africa. So that's the name for the wlac project the clothing. It's called on kara. So ankara as the technical name for african wax fabric. It's an ancient technique of printing patents. And then you wash the wax out and the collar remains on the yes yes similar to botic in exactly actually at the rives from batik really. Yes how funny. Yeah and so the object that you brought in. I'm still looking at you. You've been holding it. The whole time looks very comfy. By the way it's very so is going to be part of something which you put into your brand or is it just a festival effect As a personal effect by icing the pattern can tough lowly be an inspiration of future collection. Yeah why not tell me. How has your work affected the way that you live your life. If i have to be honest. I.

"In became one of them. It's such a common story. When now you can see people in reverse people who put their children into international schools here in shanghai of course lie and you can see that there is this cultural wall which then gets reinforced right. You're not really integrating. I mean there are people here who've lived in china for x. number of years and they don't need to really understand the low culture they drive in their bubble right. I think the school is definitely a background in which you know. The child gets a world view from. But i think what's even more than that as parenting. You know my parents were. They've never been to africa and this was a time. Where if you told your friends you're going to africa people prayed for you. You're like oh my god. I hope you come back so for my parents to go into such a foreign culture such a foreign land but to embrace everything i think was more important than the school. I attended well. So you're lucky you had the open minded parents. Yeah so the reason where dwelling on your childhood so much is. It has really informed what you do these days and also i guess your entire outlook on the world correct right. Can you describe what that is there. Some people who go to africa for the first time and soon as they step off the plane something captivates them and they start crying. They become emotional. There's definitely certain reasons asked to why this happens. And through my experience of leavening africa. I realized this is something we all. Strive for which is to freedom You know in in shanghai. I think on one hand. We're finding for this on the other hand you. This extreme conformity people get lost. What is true freedom. And i think for anyone who has had the privilege of going to africa. They might have some insights to that particular answer. Wow which have. Hard to describe. I guess but is it something about the closest to nature like how would you describe what that feeling is. Nature is definitely a big part of it you don't feel like homo sapiens are on earth to dominate other species. You know you're just a guest. So dodd gives you a very perspective. Which sometimes we forget. And secondly i think it's the people dow you would come across. Why are they so damn happy. Every day they don't have the same measurement of success us buying a car buying a house. They don't necessarily use those same measurements. It's being able to spend time with your family being in nature. I woke up hungry. There was this coconut tree. I climbed it. I got a coconut. I'm no longer hungry. No worries no worries. No is and i think it's a dangerous image because sometimes we can also romanticized that image as well. So where is the balance we are chasing for the gdp. Does the higher gdp really bring a better life to people and if that's true what is the definition of that. I'm not saying everybody should go. Climb on a tree. You definitely need to have water roads basic necessities for people to have security. So how do we strive to balance between preserving the nature around us developing sustainably. Making sure that the things we do measure happiness with our true factors dr bring fulfilment to people and through the works. I'm doing Through the content. That i'm creating. Maybe that would raise some questions right. So let's talk about that. Then so what is it that you do now. So i am of lager. Every time i travel back to africa shoot a lot of footage of the people. I meet of the organizations. I come across and the works. They do so. I create all of these into blocks which i publish on my social media okay very succinctly described. Let me pick away what you just said. Then so first of all social media here in china what channels do you use. So i am all we chat contro. How i have an official which had account i am on wayball and all my wlac. I have english and chinese right. So if i'm speaking chinese have english subtitles and the other way around when you and i first met. I remember you mentioning xi. Gua used to use she kwa stoyan as well like do you still use those or have you narrowed it down so when we first mud i just started this flaw project and We have the saying in chinese especially for content creators. Which anybody that's doing. The same thing would have a huge resonance west. Which is you'll i fought in your given power with love but that can last you for only so long so at the beginning what i was doing was you'll find in. I was so passionate about it. I love what i was doing so much. It was really pure love. And then eventually i realized okay. I need to figure out a business model. How can i be compensated to allow me to continue to do this right. So it came down to the idea of doing bespoke tourism for chinese to africa. So dawah's direction. I took not working so well this year. Right but before the whole coordinating head. I was actually having some really happy customers. Who gave great reviews with their experiences so to go back to your question about sequel. Which is watermelon does short video platform. The audience is much more third fourth sometimes fifty or cities really so it's not really my target audience if i wanted to create an ecosystem where the views could actually come back in us inquiries and then eventually turns into leads than thou wasn't the platform. Right yeah so you've moved away. From diana's well. I've moved away from doing because it was so much work. And eventually you want to e commerce on knowing the products dot woodwork. Well is things which are probably lord on one hundred quite right you know because it takes much.

"Hemi baby one more time. Wow she means it. Welcome to mosaic of china. A podcast about people who are making them all in china. I'm your host oscar fuchs. I'm really happy to be including whaling story in this season because up until now whenever there has been a story about a clash of cultures. It has been in the context of non chinese nationals. Coming to live in mainland china so the impression with might leave is that this is a china thing but no. This is a universal experience. No matter where you're from and no matter with what new culture you're confronted so that's why it's useful to hear the same story from the perspective of the chinese person who has spent the formative years of her life living outside of china more than just that wailing also represents the mindset of the worldly young shanghainese professional who has enjoyed all the benefits of modern luxury that china's economic progress has given her and is now asking themselves. What does it all mean. And this is where the mosaic. We're building with. This project isn't just about piecing together stories across cultures. It's also about doing the same across generations. Thank you so much wailing no problem. Can you tell me how mispronouncing your name. Your name is john foiling. What is the tones of your name. Wailing failing yeah okay. So it's fourth tone and second time all right. i'll try to remember that wailing. Nice to meet you here. We first met. Oh it must have been about a year ago now yes. Tom flies by. And i have something to play for you. I am going to recommend that you speak with the wonderful woman by the name of john. Waiting and waiting is a blogger. She spent an enormous amount of time in africa and now she's bringing african life to chinese users on social media through blogs and chat posts and things like that that was our mutual friend. Eric orlando so how do you know eric. I did a podcast for eric on his china africa project. We had a great time chatting and Yeah we developed a friendship out of that. He recommended me to you now. I'm doing podcast for mosaic. Becky and of course africa is the connection but before we go into that whole story tell me what object did you bring today that in some way represents your life in china so i brought a shuka. Show me okay. She's getting it out of her bag. I have no idea what that word means. It could be an animal lender so xiew-kang as basically something the messiah tribe Which is predominantly in east africa. They would wear their nomads. And this is actually something very signature off their attire. It's very resistant to cold. Because in those areas actually gets very cold a night so they would wear this over your shoulder drape it over their shoulder and the red actually a flashy colors. the lions hate. Oh so it's to make sure lions don't attack exactly okay i suppose. There aren't that many lines in shanghai these days now so i definitely don't use it to myself of lying during the winter during the fall aware as a gigantic scarf That keeps me from the cold during the spring sometimes. It appears on my dining table. When i have friends over for dinner and i just want something a been more festive been more colorful and i love getting a souvenir from my friends as well. So you know. It's really something practical to can infuse into their everyday life. Excellent and what's it called again chuka sugar and that is in what language. It's in the messiah language for helium. Yes why healy okay. Well you grew up. Way in africa and ghana. Okay wes so tell us about your upbringing. How come you were in ghana. So i'm originally from shanghai. And tell i was about ten. I think my dad was just going through a midlife crisis. He's like okay. I don't wanna be here anymore. So he wanted to leave at the time. My uncle and my and have already moved to ghana. He was just supposed to go. Light air on the beach on the dakota trees for a couple of months. Never hugh mac which meant who was left in shanghai. You and your mother me and my mom and my mom decided i. She was going to join him and a few months after. I joined them in ghana. I guess it was crawfish. Yes yes tell me about your life there You know a lot of my friends in school didn't have hair and wearing a lot of chinese kids Whose parents sent them to the local schools So i was attending a local school and all my classmates were gone. The fact that i had hair was very idris. Same for them. So i became quite popular overnight because all the kids in school line in front of my class wanted to play with my hair. Yeah they could just like no. I don't understand. How could you be born this way so that was really fun. Okay so that was. The big culture shock was just dow was a big culture shock so another one will be the way we eat Obviously by ten. I was already using chopsticks right so going to school. Kids just took out their lunchbox and started using their hands. So that was a little culture shock for me as bow. And there's such a culture of sharing that. It's a natural if you took a lunchbox school and you wouldn't want to share it with your classmate next to you but i grew on a pretty quickly. I guess that's a great way for you to learn about the culture of food just steal your neighbors lunch exactly exactly. But i guess when you're ten years old are you more likely to accept new things now. You more likely to be possessive about your previous culture. Okay so this is a good question because my uncle and my and they had a daughter so my cousin who's two years older than me. We actually spend the same amount of time in ghana She sent to an international school. And i will send to a local school and she hated people touching her hair. She hated sharing her food. Because you have to take into consideration. We're only children right. We're not used to sharing. I think it's just you don't a level of resistance. She resisted it probably a lot more than me so up until today she still counts that as a nozzle pleasant culture shock where i just blended.

"Okay next up is the dark knight two thousand eight. Nope you know what's I loved the christopher nolan batman movies when they released in theaters and i after i got my new tv and upgraded my home cinema. I bought a four k. Box sets and i. I don't know what happened but i. I watched all three of them. And wasn't that impressed. It's kind of because actually i. I like three movies. I'd like the dark knight the best. Obviously i think batman returns is kind of underrated. I think It's it's it's a decent just really good film. It's a decent film dot rises. Not so much. It is the lesser of the three. I believe there's really awesome performances. And all i don't know i don't know that i would have this would would've made the cut for me in two thousand eight. I'd have to see the full list but a is probably was most likely the right call. What do you think. scott. I think that Heath ledger deserved his immersion in his performance. As the joker chair. I i think he deserved that award. I think that his academy award was well-deserved In terms of the movie itself because it is so compared and contrasted with heat and heat didn't win best picture if he didn't get best picture then the dark knight may very respectfully sit back down. But let's say okay so and we're not talking about winning. We're just talking about nominations. Do you think that this movie didn't get nominated because it was a genre movie. And i guess that we should have been asking that the whole time but i think some of these because they're comic book movies especially back then there. There's got. There's still a stigma now about these movies In some quarters that it just because it was a comic book film or a genre film It didn't even make it didn't get a nomination. Strictly because of that fact that is that is a possibility. However i'd have to look at and i don't have that knowledge off the top. We can leave. I think time cinematography was nominated like there were sound sound design score by hans him her like. I don't know what it what it's collection was at the at the Award season that year. But i think that it sort of garnered all of the praise that it deserved at the time and best picture doesn't necessarily like in two thousand eight. Would you be like yay batman. Won best picture. Do think anyone. I don't even. I think you almost undercuts the award. I don't know. I don't know. I being snobby but i have such affection for batman. I don't know i th. I think this one's suffered from being a comic book movie. And i agree i think it was. I think it was left out purpose. Purposefully but again. I'd need the entire slate in front of me to to really to have a definitive answer. And maybe we'll revisit that it's adds a great topic. We revisit that later on on another me It is be how it goes those movies. They always get like techno technical nods sure and then every once in a while you'll get a standout performance and you'll get a you'll get a best actor but.
