Was there like a little people door that opens up and all you see his eyeballs, and they say you walk in here like, Well, I wish it was like that. But no, you walk in what looks like a utility door. It's not marked. There's nothing on it and you walk in the back. And there you are in a lobby. Oh, Mayor Lorraine. Thank you. Sensational. T Mayor Lorraine is the drink girl. "Music team is sharing some of the albums they are most excited about. Hi many mystery, Um Mohammed. I'm a producer with NPR music, and I'm really excited about an album called El Arte del Bolero. That's coming out this Friday by alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon and pianist Louise Parador, MMA. Zanon is from Puerto Rico and is a founding member of the S. F. Jazz Collective and Luis Perdomo is originally from Venezuela, and he moved to New York City in the early nineties. Back in September, The two recorded a concert at the Jazz Gallery in New York City, and it was live streamed in November. After they listened back to the set. They realized that the recording was something really special and that it had to be shared. This music was recorded all in one take and you can really hear the synergy between these two jazz greats. They know each other so well and you can hear that They've been collaborators for 20 years. So the song we're hearing right now is called who get to, And it's a classic tune written by the legendary Bobby Capone. This whole album includes some great Latin American standards. Both artists have heard the songs on this album hundreds of times songs that they heard growing up with their parents and grandparents. And now they love these songs, too. Another record. I'm really excited about is by Paris.

"Find a video streaming as part of a hobby that I eventually want to make into a one of my careers. Well one day I was talking with one of my regulars nihar about how the stream is really gone far. Like it used to be laggy on the game play the audio. You said Echo. It was just like a low-quality experience. Sometimes the the Streamwood to stop or you get dropped frames, which is what either the computer or the internet connection cannot keep up with it. It was just not a fun experience. I feel that my stream that become a lot better since then, but it's interesting to realize. Wow. I'm at a better place and I was then and it kind of made me realize who you are right now. It's not where you're going to end up just because you're struggling with something right now doesn't mean that you always will don't know what you're going through. I know the things that I'm struggling with in my life right now dead. I don't know what you're going through. But I want to encourage you that what's going on right now. You're going to learn from this and it it won't be easy. It's not cuz it's not easy for me right now and some of the stuff that I'm going through Thursday. I really do believe that we're each are going to get through what we're struggling with I use the streaming as an example cuz it's a public-facing example of a something that I've struggled with in my life. I've upgraded my tech over time. I've met proven to the stream. I've become more confident and even in July my internet provider finally, let me get faster internet, which means I've got a stable connection now to Twitch to stream. We are in life. Cuz of us cuz it's because of circumstances like my internet speed and sometimes we have to wait for it to get better. You won't always be in this situation. I don't want to do toxic positivity them. Tomorrow can be great America Baker's hate tomorrow may suck. But I really do believe that you and I will be in a different place and we'll look back at this time be like, wow, I learn from that experience at that time and it's May A different and hopefully better person I'd given up on streaming if I give him on different things. I would not be where I'm at right now because something was difficult. I've given up on it and I've given up on the people things in my life. And I regret those things I've given up on but if I had given up on streaming in this example to use the Zenon girl of the 21st century. I would have regretted it major.

That's right so hard. I like what he's saying. Of course, he's a journalist, and they're all arrogant and the whole world revolves around me. Truth will always matter, right? "Is a very big. Pile of very quiet matter that otherwise isn't doing anything so that if we get a little signal of dark matter comes in and happens to bump into one of these nuclei, we can tell you just got like a huge tub of hydrogen is all sorts of crazy stuff going on all the time, and if dark matter comes in bumps a hydrogen atom, you wouldn't even notice eve but a big pool of Xena just sitting there Moseley does nothing and so something is able to penetrate a mile underground in bump into one of these Zenana atoms then you might not. It's pretty chill. It doesn't I guess it's it's called it's not moving and it's also not very reactive I guess is what you're saying exactly, and that's why we use these noble gases other teams we're thinking about using liquid argon, for example, but see really has the best combination of being available not being crazy expensive and giving off the right kind of signal when it does get bumped right and it also fit the acronym. Is exactly, and that's how we make these choices really in the end you. WOULD HAVE BEEN AWKWARD IF DESIGN ON EXPERIMENT USE Argon. When maybe nobody who had to know it could be a big cover up. You know this is Zenon Gate. It's all covered up anyway yeah, and we build this device because we're looking for particular thing We know that dark matters out there we know that it has it matter that has gravity that some kind of stuff but we don't really know very much else about it. We hope that it also can do something else. That is that it can bump into normal matter and sometimes interact with it using some sort of. Force that's not grabbing. No dark matter doesn't feel electromagnetism. So it can't be that for us. We know doesn't feel the strong force. We know a dozen feel the weak force. If it felt more of those forces, we have seen it already. So we're hoping beyond hope that it also has some new kind of dark force and you can use that to bump into normal manner, interesting and we don't know that it does. Is just a guest. It's just a hope it's like well, if it is this thing and it has this new force, then maybe we could see it this way. So xena, this experiment really is built on sort of a lot of assumptions like Glitz Bill, the kind of thing that could see this very particular kind of particle. You could be wrong. It could be the maybe dark matter only interest of gravity in which. Case, even this giant of xenon wouldn't see it or interact with it or catch it exactly. We have only very weak arguments to suggest that dark matter is a particle and that it can interact with normal matter in any way of gravity never seen it. We certainly have never proven that it can interact gravitationally reduced hoping it does because if it doesn't, we have no chance at ever figuring out what kind of part of. Because gravity is so weak. The you can only use it to study enormous galaxy size blobs of dark matter. So were hoping it's there and you know in particle physics we often play the game of finding a negative result like if we build this thing and we don't see it that means, Hey, if dark matter particle, it doesn't have this kind of interaction. We can still learn something about what dark matter doesn't way. Not Nearly as exciting but you know it's still new territory scientific eastern checking a box and hoping to get a clear picture. Yeah exactly. But you know sometimes you build this device to look for one very particular kind of particle and its spots. Something else you know in some sense is very specific. It's looking for this kind of particle a wimp weakly interacting massive particle. We think dark matter might be but on the other. Hand is just very sensitive, very quiet detector that could notice some other weird new thing flying over six last attempt at trying to feel or touch dark matter because if it doesn't work then it you that maybe we'll never interact with dark matter. Yeah and this is sort of the like seven step in the succession of these detectors they started with a very small little container of Xenon just to see if it worked it. Did, but the smaller amount of you had the less sensitive you are. So then they scaled up and scaled up and they scaled up this is the first time they've had a detector that's like more than a ton of xenon and as they were running this one, they're simultaneously building bigger one and the reason is that you want to run longer and you want morzine on because it gives you more chances to find A. To Z. X. L.. And now they're thinking about Z. X. l.. This is on one ton and pretty soon, they're coming with Zeon n tongue, which means like several tons Zeno and then there's competition there's one in the US. Called L Z and another one in China called panda ex and everybody's racing to build the biggest amount of Zine on and who has the coolest name for their device. Definitely, paying X. winds up. All right. So the idea is that you have this tub of non chill it's not very reactive and the scenarios, and maybe a better park will come in and bump into Z. Non Adam and then what lake move it or cause it to flash or wiggle what's the what's the scenario under which you might detect dark matter. Yeah. So we're not terribly sensitive to it. All we can see is depositions of energy like a particle comes in and bumps Zenon we can't see the particle came in at all. All we can see is that the nucleus recoiled like the xenon got pushed a little bit and as you said, it deposits some energy. And what it makes is disease on absorbs that energy from the little push and then he gives it off again doesn't like to hold onto it. So it usually gives off a little vote-on gives off a little flash of light, and so this is one reason why we choose in on his has really nice scintillating promise. Basically, you excite any of Zine on atoms and they form a little molecule pairs nonn's those are excited like wiggling back and forth, and then they relax back down to two individuals in on atoms and give off a vote on that. You can capture those tiny little dark flashes of light with a multiplier being very scintillating. For sure and tantalizing? I mean, basically you have like a bathtub under a mile underground in the dark with a camera attached to in your waiting for little flashes of light which could mean ironically dark matter. Exactly. It could be shedding light on dark. All right. Well, that's what it was built for but recently denounced that they saw something else and maybe even more interesting than dark matter. So let's get into that but first, let's take a quick break. Off. If you're looking for better business communications us. "Don't think most Americans know what it is in let's say Either studied it or they're older or they played duty much less what happened. Ring out while the leaves are gone off the trees for two hundred years. Yes exactly So this is a huge wise is so what they do. Is they decide. You know what no problem. We'll do it at night. We'll just hold the power right here. So we don't we don't we have to dwell another twenty four hours. We'll be in the middle of the day again. So let's just keep the power right here at sixteen hundred and then once we once we pass midnight And the night crew comes in them will lower back down and we'll go from there sh. So here's the problem in this reactor as these atoms are fishing. They are turning into different elements. This is called decay so you have uranium atom and it smashes apart and it turns into smaller atoms. And those isotopes. Like for instance. You get iodine isotopes In Regina Isotopes one of the major isotope of byproducts of uranium decay in this reactor was Zenon zeon become British because the show no places? Let's call Zenana like Americans and the interesting one of the interesting properties of this isotope. Obscene on is that it's actually very good. Neutron absorbing it wants to kind of soak up neutrons to become stable. Which means that if you have a lot of it in your court's GonNa Start Reducing your reactivity because it's absorbing neutrons just like the control rods do if there's too much of it then what happens is your core is what they call poisoned normally in regular operation at thirty two hundred megawatts in that reactor as the the Zenonas created a kind of his decaying down itself because of the speed of the reactivity. There's enough neutrons breaking off to kind of Philip. The calmed down. And then it turns into other things. But when you're running low power in this reactor Zenonas indicating fast enough because not enough. Neutrons are being fired out and as it does this it starts to poison or draw pulled down. The reactor wants to slow down so we arrive now. Finally they're able to test is now a little bit after midnight because it's after midnight. There is a shift change so the team in that room was not trained in running this test. They were not supposed to run the test. They had never run the test before. In fact they were looking at a book with instructions. Some of which were crossed out. I didn't know why they called another control room and ask them what they were supposed to do. About those and the person the other controller said Oh. I.

But at that point in the game, and when I sit to Stacey on the beach, I was like, something is not right people are this just a vibe and this idea of throwing a challenge, Mike as somebody who's watched enough of this. I remember I can't even remember his name, but on the Australian one, when he even tried to throw the challenge and he was just pedaling at the back there and and John Zenon Henry is like, what is he? What is in raven doing auto? Don't even know what's gone on my a lot. And I was like, there's no way, no way, very seldomly when people are challenges, does it work properly? Okay with Australia Chattan because the story that was being told to me was that we were gonna throw it to get rid of Martinez, which again, logically I was like, yes, I'm on board with this another k with rowing challenge, but this guy's go to go. And again, logic is subjective to a lot of people at that point. I was like, okay, even I'm I'm over him and people would just getting very fidgety and they were getting very riskless and they wanted to go to trouble council because you haven't thought of playing survive. Apparently, unless you go to travel council, what was actually happening was that I'd Noida people and put people off and Vannatter I think was driving that just because he knew that undestood the game, and he knew that I had this drive within me and my language and all the things told him that I was going to be a threat to him and his. His hold on the game in his, his ability to be the most, the person who understood the game, the base and between him and Tim and actually by the white seven is also the student of this game right of, yeah, I'm just a fan, so. So talking about your own emotional state wants, Stacey leaves. I know that you were, you seem very, you know, very emotional over the fact that she left the game. I get a little. Did you know that you were the one that was actually targeted but having lost, you know your island BFF we're about to approach a swap, so everything's going to be shaking up. But at that point in time, what were you thinking? Was there someone else in line who you were thinking, okay, this is someone who I have to now sort of glomming onto. Yeah, it was a weird episode because I've been talking Stacy of allege for about three days and she was suffering suffering a lot with things ID and and and and she just wasn't. She's a very, very strong girl. She plays. Rugby, she's she's a very, very strong and strong willed individual, and and I was like, how is this person on day three, four day three. Just like just it's too much for and I was like, this is what happens when you don't know survivor very well because I know that she has watched the show. But again, if you've not watched a lot and if you think you Bigorre stronger, then people like Boston, rob sitting on a beach bowling. His is out saying it's the toughest thing he's ever done is a newsflash. You're not tougher than any of those people. And yeah, once she left and the biggest thing actually, Mike was win. PK wrote my name down at trouble console. I thought, why?.

"The author of zenon was persic laid out the notion that you could make qualitative distinctions and there really was a difference between good things and bad things are great things and evil things it gives you direction it gives you gives you the possibility of moving upward and and ratzinger is pointing out at least to some degree that human beings are insufficient in and of themselves and need the movement upward and so they need to conceptualise something like the highest good and then to strive for that and the thing is is that there isn't any difference between conceptualising the good and being judged because if you're going to conceptualise the good and move towards at what you have to do is separate from yourself all those things that aren't good and leave them behind and that's where the redeemer and the judge are the same thing and one of the things that's really a polling i think about our modern world is that were rejecting the notion of qualitative distinctions you said well we don't want to hurt anybody's feelings by saying that one thing is better than the other it's like okay fair enough it's not fun to be cast off with the damned that's for sure but if people are in fact insufficient the internet in their present condition which seems to be the case me try finding someone who isn't then if you deny the possibility of qualitative distinction because he wanted to promote a radical egalitarianism then you remove the possibility of redemption because there's no movement towards the good and it seems to me that it's a catastrophe to sacrifice the good for.
