"I went to Hofstra university. I graduated with a BB and marketing from the Frank Zarb school of business, and then I tried working in the city for a marketing company, but you know, all throughout my life. I always grew up working at my father's jewelry store, which was in a jewelry exchange on Long Island. And I was always the boss's daughter. So when I finally got out there and got a real job and had to have a real boss real responsibilities. It was it wasn't worth the amount of money. They were paying me at the time because you know, like how it is when your entry level. So my dad told me I'll open up a jewelry store for you, which I did. So I think I was twenty two when I opened my jewelry store. And it was a very slow jewelry exchange, we weren't really making that much money. And then when I met my husband, we decided it was just more practical to just close the jewelry store and just need get married and through the whole, you know, housewife thing. So how old were you? When you have your husband. I met him the Sunday before Labor Day, and I married him the Sunday before Labor Day one year later exactly when to the day. So how did you guys meet? So my mom was trying to set me up with guys from my culture. So I'm Syrian Orthodox from Turkey and Cyrano orthodox is a Christian based based kind of like Greek Orthodox and my parents were off the boat from Turkey. So they wanted me to marry somebody from our community, and you know, I grew up here, and I went to college, and I had girlfriends, and I was not intuitive much when I was younger. It was like oh my God. I'm not going to do that. I'm still American. I'm to do the whole American thing. And then watching my girlfriends just being treated terribly and going through breakup and guys cheating on them all the time. I just thought. Wow. You know, what I don't know if I want that like, I don't know if I want that I want someone to treat me with respect. I want chivalry. I want someone to open the door for me. And you know, you know, sometimes I would go out on a date with someone and they'd be like, oh, you know, I'll. For the meal, and you'll get the tip would just be like I felt like that was such a big turnoff on a first date. Like, I was like, dude. Like, you gotta come in. I want you to suit me off my feet. I wanna feel like Princess, and I wasn't really seeing that too much. I was just seeing like guys cheat. My friends like shit calling them bad names, cursing at them. And you listen maybe wearing the wrong crew. But I decided I didn't want that. So I told my mom that I would be open to being introduced to someone. And and once I started once I was I the minute. I turned sixteen I was getting shooters. I was getting people enquiring about meeting, my mom, like, oh, how would you daughter is she ready to get married? And obviously there was no way. I was getting married at sixteen and then eighteen and then twenty and then twenty the students were coming around. And I was still saying, no. And my mom would always tell me like if you keep saying no to everybody who comes to your door. They're going to think that. That you know, you're you're a snob. And you think you're better than everybody else? And I just kept telling my mom, I'm not attracted to any of these guys that are coming my way the end of the day, I wanna be attracted to someone. This is the rest of your life. You know, I wanna have a connection with somebody. So. Finally, when I was twenty four I agree to go out on a date with this one guy, and I went under chaperone date. My brother team with me. His name's John, Barry, very nice guy. But when I went on date, I was not attracted to him at all..

"Thank you for being here. Joel thank you for having me. It's going to be four years on February twelfth. And I am very lucky and blessed person. Congratulations twelve take us back to when you first got that call. I mean, that's a call. No one imagines they'll get an ever wants to get. So tell us about that was pretty freaky. I I was diabetic for twenty years before this, and I always had blood work done every three months and seven thirty in the morning on a on a Thursday. I got a call from my Endo, Kronos. Just saying that he wanted me to go over and get a cat scan. And when you get a call from your endocrinologists is seven thirty in the morning, it certainly scares the blanket. So I went over had that test ran over to him with it afterwards. And that started the ball rolling in terms of me getting a lot further testing picking a surgeon picking the hospital, and it was within one month from the time that I was diagnosed for to the time I had the surgery from the from the day of the cat skin. I had the surgery, and that included the fact that we had a major snowstorm for a week in the Gogh it was a world win. So when you were getting regular blood tests. They're obviously looking for the all of those things associated with diabetes. Was it the white blood cell count? What was in the blood tests that gave your doctor that initial indication that there may be something that needs to be. Into okay. It was a called a Billy Ruben tests. Then I guess it's a test related to the liver. And there were the test that he'd be running in addition to that. And he didn't like the Billy Ruben school was above the, you know, the norm the high range, and he didn't like the affiliated tests with it. So that's what he immediately sent me over for the cat skin. It's interesting. It took them three years to tell me that he was convinced from the time. He saw the initial Billy Ruben score that I had been created cancer. So he's pretty pretty good. Wow. My wife, so I mean, how it was such a quick turnaround from your diagnosis to surgery how did you cope in? Did you have a support mechanism? Did you have friends or family that were with you through that process before you answer that let me add something that's really important public quiz listened this. They need. Need to understand that? Sometimes the physician will look at the problem will analyze the problem and will hold the problems for a little bit. And then just disclosed the problem to the to the patient the family, but the solution for these things are early diagnosis and early surgery. The problem with people is that and I see that constantly when although I don't work in any related cancer related problems. I see people that they have a problem, and they try to manipulate the same is going to go away. Or or is is I need to wait. You don't you? Don't you have a prosthetic problem? Your your your your laboratory is normal get that thing out from there soon. What you have is. You have not only a brilliant physician, but at the same time and individual who did not tolerate the fact that you will die because they the problem with the with the pancreatic cancer is unbelievable dangerous as soon as you hit something that needs to have surgery if you can do it and the next minute you should. He he had said to me that if I had waited till the next three months when I had my next set attest that it was probably too late to have surgery. That's how fast it grows, and that's why I'm so lucky because he got it. So it was court so early that it was totally contained in the pancreas. They were able to clear it I had nothing in my lymph nodes. And it's if different anybody is listening. I I concur thousand percent. The number one thing for any of these major ailments early diagnosis, and that is part and parcel of everybody should have an annual exam and everybody should have regular bloodwork every year because so many people would this Aren court because there were no symptoms. But if they were doing regular blood, maybe it would be great. And and again just to reiterate my earlier question because what doc had to say was so very important. But what was your support group like you had friends and family with you to help you? I guess I would divide my support group up into three categories. So obviously one is my family who was unbelievable in terms of being supportive and being there for me. There were times though, when I had to be their caregiver because they were so worried that I was going to die that they were, you know, sometimes out of control, and we sometimes lose sight of the fact that the loved ones also or affected, but a great group. They're a great group of friends. And then what I also did is I reached out to two or three other people who are different. The home my friends, also, but for different reasons, and that is because they had had cancer in one case it was ovarian cancer, which is another really bad one. And the other case was somebody who without smoking had gotten lung cancer. And I wanted to know, you know, about their psychological coping with everything so they were tremendous and then after the other community that I had after the surgery, and when I was going to the chemo is that the oncologists that I went to several different size rooms. So I went to the treatment room that had eight you could have eight people in there. And why 'cause we talk to each other? We'd reinforce each other. Was it was a whole positive thing. People can't believe that they think that what we would do is complain and say we're gonna die. No. We were all it's great to see you. And you know, you're doing so. Well, so this support groups there's no question, and the one piece of advice that on the other hand that I would give. Is don't go on social media? Listen to your doctor. Okay. I made a really stupid mistake. I had to have this thing called the Whipple surgery. I made a mistake of going on YouTube and watching about five minutes of a video on the surgery. And I can't believe that for a person who's supposed to be so smart, I could have been so stupid. Well, yeah. I mean, a lot of people in the day and age of the internet and web MD and all of this everybody wants to self diagnose and speaking specifically about social media. I see all the time. Hey, anybody have any experience with this? Why are you asking your quote, unquote, Facebook friends? You know to have a medical diagnosis. Go see a damn doctor don't put it out there. And the and the other thing in the case of something like pancreatic where the diagnosis and the odds are so bad. If you get into a discussion group, it'll depress you when thirty seconds because there's nobody there that's taking you know, the opposite perspective because they don't have that perspective. So that makes it even worse. Well, and you also talk about in your book Joel about having a positive mindset and that being your your best tool in dealing with disease. How did you figure that one out on your own or did people coach you in that aspect your own? I I've been a hard charger my whole life. I wanted to have a certain lifestyle for my wife and my two daughters. So in addition to teaching I was writing textbooks and doing consulting because I wanted to have an appropriate lifestyle and let a lot of things passed me by and when this happened, I said, you know, I'm I coined this term. For myself. I'm not gonna throw away any days. I wanna live every day. I'm not gonna worry about years from now. I was at the time that I would diagnosed I guess, I was sixty six would just right before it was sixty six and I said that I need to live my wife. I can't go on just, you know, sitting at the computer and doing all this other stuff. So that made me upbeat, you know, this idea of live life retake set set for myself some type of goal. So I go out to eat lunch with people more often. I see people more often I'm involved in volunteer work, and one of the things one of the reasons why I never got down as I have said, I I have never asked. Why me I ask why not me because the fact that I'm still here and ninety plus percent aren't so that I've always viewed myself as. Being extremely lucky and that I wanna do everything I can to give back. That's why I do radio interviews like this. That's why my book is available for free at free hyphen e books dot net. It's totally free. Download I'm not looking to make any money I wanna comfort patients and their families. So I just feel blessed? One of the things that another thing that helped me going back to an earlier question was while I was going to chemo. My older daughter was go went to a meditation class every Thursday night. And I always view view. That is fhu whatever. But I said, you know, what I'll go I'll spend the hour with her. And it was great because they taught me breathing exercises. They they talk to you about how to filter out other forts and try to focus on something positive. So I think that helped me a lot to well. I think we can all say, God bless you. And we're so very happy that you're four years into recovery. And you also talk about asking readers to reach out to you directly. How do they do that you've told? Them how to get the free e book, but how do they reach out to you directly? Joe J O E L P R O F the short for professor one more. Joel prophesy at hotmail dot com. I promise to respond to anybody. Excellent continued good health. Joel Evans, professor at Hofstra university Zarb school just very shortly. A former professor of one of my proudest achievements.
