"Tired of spending hundreds of dollars prescription glasses. Xeni offers thousands of affordable eyewear styles starting at just six ninety five visits any today at Zanny dot com slash CNN. Welcome to the point four Tuesday, February the fifth. I'm Chris cillizza cutting through the political spin and bringing the news you need to know. Happy state of the Union Day one week late, but we got here. The government is reopened. Donald Trump will right around nine pm eastern time deliver his state of the union address. So what do we expect? Well, the truth of the matter, and this is true before Donald Trump, and certainly true of Donald Trump is that these state of the union addresses are big pomp and circumstance moments in Washington, a bicameral session of congress. The president outlining both what he's done in what he plans to do. But outside of the show of it, all there's not really all that much that comes of the state of the union think that's especially true in this state of the union, usually president spent a rope will be limited time talking about their accomplishments and most of their speaking time talking about what they do. You want to do sort of a blueprint for the next year or the next several years of their term. My guess is that Trump will spend a lot more time than the average president detailing what he believes he has done over the first two years. You've heard him say many times on the campaign trail, and in other speeches that he's had the most productive first two years of any president in history. Now fact checkers say that's not true. But it won't stop Trump from saying it, so my guess is lots of focus on his accomplishments, some nastiness and back and forth as it relates to immigration in the wall. And then in attempt sort of kind of at the end for bipartisanship. A we need to be unified. The problem is unified and unity in what we should unify around are things at the two parties. Simply don't agree on frankly. Donald Trump doesn't agree with the Republican party. And a lot of those things so unity is a nice idea. I think he will bow to it at some point tonight. But really in truth starting tomorrow, nothing will change we'll still be in the same place. We'll still be one day closer. To another government shutdown or a national emergency declaration to fund Donald Trump's wall. He won't fundamentally alter the dynamics here. What opinions are of Donald Trump are set in stone, one speech, even a series of speeches, even one as highly covered and big deal as a state of the union won't change that that's news. "Tired of spending hundreds of dollars prescription glasses. Xeni offers thousands of affordable eyewear styles starting at just six ninety five visits any today at Zanny dot com slash CNN. This is GPS the global public square. Welcome to all of you in the United States and around the world. I'm for Zaccaria. Today on the show Putin versus Donald Trump. On nuclear missiles. And lead as well. The two are surprisingly not seeing idle at all. Why is the White House with blowing from one of the most important, Cold War treaties? We're not gonna let them violate a nuclear agreement and go out and do weapons and we're not allowed to. Advice from so strongly behind the opposition in Venezuela, while Putin backs Madore, I have a great battle to talk about all of that. And more. Then El Chapo once his was the most feared name in Mexico twice. He escaped from maximum security prisons in his home country. Now, we'll tell you some of the extraordinarily stories of Brooklyn jury has learned about his life of crime. But first, here's my take this year's world economic for more than usual prompted a spirited round of elite bashing which has now become the trendy political posture on both right and left on the one side, President Trump and Fox News hosts slam the out of touch establishment that according to them as run things into the ground on the other side left-wingers decry, the billionaires and millionaires who in one authors phrase broke, the modern world underlying these twin critiques is a bleak view of modern life, a dysfunctional global order producing stagnant incomes rising, insecurity, and environmental degradation. But is this depiction? In fact, true are we doing so very badly that we need to bring back the guillotine 's on the simplest and most important measure income. The story is actually one of astonishing progress since nineteen ninety over one billion people have moved out of extreme poverty. Inequality from global perspective has declined dramatically and all this has happened chiefly because countries from China to India, do we view Opio have adopted more market friendly policies and western countries have helped them with access to markets, humanitarian assistance and loan forgiveness. In other words policies supported by these various -letes look at any measure from global perspective. And the numbers are staggering since the early nineteen nineties. The child mortality rate is down by fifty eight percent undernourishment has fallen forty one percent and on and on. I know the response some will have to these statistics the figures pertain to the world in general, but not specifically to America things might have improved for the Chinese, but not for the denizens of rich countries that sense of unfairness is surely what is fueling Trump's America first agenda mobile during lead the left traditionally concerned about the poorest of the poor has also become critical of a process that has improved the lives. Of at least a billion of the world's most impoverished people. And anyway when with things so much better in the nineteen fifties. When Jim crow reigned in America and women could barely work as anything more than seamstresses and secretaries than nineteen eighties. When two thirds of the globe stagnated under state, socialism repression in isolation, what group of elites kings commissars mandarins ran the world better than our current hodgepodge of politicians and businessmen even in the west it's easy to take. For granted. The astounding progress we live longer the air and water cleaner. Crime has plunged and information and communication virtually free economically. They have been gains, though, crucially, they have not been distributed equally, but they have been monumental improvements in access and opportunity for large segments of the populations of these western countries. People who are locked out and pushed down in the US the gap between black and white school complete. Shen has almost superior Hispanic. College enrollment has soared the gender gap between the wages of men and women has narrowed female membership in national legislatures in the advanced industrial world has almost doubled over the last twenty years. No countries allowed gay marriage two decades ago, but more than twenty do today in all these areas much remains to be done. But in each of them, there has been striking progress. I understand that important segments of the western working class are under great pressure. And they often feel ignored and left behind by the progress. Made we must find ways to give them greater economic support and moral dignity. But extensive research also shows that some of their discomfort comes from watching the society in which other groups are rising changing the nature of the world in which there enjoyed a comfortable status after four hundred years of slavery. Segregation and discrimination in America. Blacks have been moving up. After thousands of years of being treated as structurally. Subordinate women are now gaining genuine equality once considered criminals or deviants gays can finally live and love freely in many countries. The fact that these changes might cause discomfort to some is not a reason to pause nor to forget that it represents deep and lasting human progress that we should celebrate for more. "Tired of spending hundreds of dollars prescription glasses. Xeni offers thousands of affordable eyewear styles starting at just six ninety five visits any today at Zanny dot com slash CNN. Welcome to the point four Friday. February the first I'm Chris cillizza cutting through the political spin bringing the news you need to know. Well, the twenty twenty democratic field got a little bit bigger on Friday morning as Cory Booker. The New Jersey Senator did what we all sort of expected him to do announce these running for president which makes him the fourth Senator in the race. The second African American Senator Kamla Harris had entered the race last week. And I think maybe a second tier candidate at the moment. Just outside of the first here. Let me go through five ways to think about the Booker candidacy couple positives. Couple of negatives on the positive side. He is without question. The best most natural speaker in the race. And he'll probably remain that no matter who else gets in. He is someone who speaks with the motion. He is someone who speaks with power. He is charismatic. He commands a room. And that's the does matter when you're retail. Politicking Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Second thing going for Cory Booker. He has a solid core of longtime aides around him see say who cares about a staff whilst staff matters because you need people who know, you know, where you've been on the issues know where you are on the issues. No where you wanna go on the issues who can stand up to you. When you have a bad idea and say, no and Booker is had those people around for quite some time. Some of this is the fact that even since he's been the mayor of Newark way back in the middle two thousand people have expected him run for president. So he's attracted talent and retain that talent third thing going for him. He is a tireless campaigner. So in twenty eight team Booker was everywhere. Crisscrossing the country for democratic candidates. He's also at forty nine years old way on the younger side. He's almost thirty years younger than Bernie Sanders who we expect to run another Senate colleague, he should retain that energy. And it is important because running for president is a grind, you gotta get up every minute of every day and act like it's the greatest thing. That's. Ever happen. You an island Hampshire, South Carolina. You're so damn glad to meet every single person you meet if to keep the same level of energy up in that his incredibly difficult now a few less positive things Booker is somewhat unproven as a candidate. So obviously, he was the mayor of Newark and the two thousands left that in two thousand thirteen to run for a special election in New Jersey for the New Jersey Senate seat. Now he won that seat easily. New Jersey's democratic state Booker a well known person who had long been expected to run. But in that campaign a couple of things came up. He was sending messages on Twitter with the stripper in Oregon. He's a single guy feel free to do that. But never totally explained. And then there was the mysterious figure of T-Bone. This is a drug dealer who Booker said once threatened to kill him who he often used as a reference point win. Speaking about his life in Newark. The thing is when reporters went looking for T-Bone, no one could actually find him. In Booker is spoken about him. As though he's a real person. But back in two thousand and seven he said, he is an archetype of so many people that are out there. He is one. Thousand percent a real person. So is your real person or not again, this isn't going to derail Cory Booker. But it suggests that there is some clarity. He needs to bring to a fuzzy background. And the final thing the second not so great thing for booker's. His record isn't perfect for liberal. So look he was for school choice. He did events with Betsy DeVos. He did vote against Betsy DeVos for education secretary. He's also one of the top recipients of campaign donations from Wall Street now he has sworn off corporate Pac donations, but that will not keep his opponents from attacking all the money. He did take when he was running interesting candidate lot of potential high ceiling, but we'll see if he reaches it. That's the news. You need to know for this. "Tired of spending hundreds of dollars prescription glasses. Xeni offers thousands of affordable eyewear styles starting at just six ninety five visits any today at Zanny dot com slash CNN. Welcome to the point four Wednesday, January the thirtieth my dad's birthday happy birthday done. I'm Chris cillizza cutting through the political spin bring you the news you need to know on Tuesday afternoon, the heads of the various intelligence agencies in Washington, the director of national intelligence, the CIA director of the FBI director and a few others delivered their yearly threat assessment to the Senate intelligence committee. Now, it was a public airing. So it's not as though they let spill a bunch of secrets, but it wasn't opportunity to see where our intelligence community sees the US in the threats facing us in the world. Here's it's fascinating it directly diverged from what Donald Trump has suggested the threats are in the world. So Donald Trump has said ISIS, basically been defeated, and we can pull out of Syria the intelligence community through the heads. That appeared in front of the Senate intelligence committee said not true. Donald Trump said North Korea is moving on its way to deep nuclearization the intelligence community said not true. Donald Trump said that Iran is a major threat, and they are not keeping to the balance of the Iran nuclear deal. That's why he pulled out in two thousand seventeen the intelligence community said that they remain within the bonds of that agreement. Donald Trump on Wednesday morning took to Twitter to criticize the intelligence community saying they don't really know what they're talking about. And they should go back to school. Now. You'll remember this is far from the first time Donald Trump has questioned the findings of the intelligence community. He has repeatedly refused to heed the fact that the unanimous intelligence community said that Russia interfered in the two thousand sixteen election and did so to help him and hurt Hillary Clinton after a joint press conference that Donald Trump had with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki Finland. Trump said both sides were to blame in the. Interference. And that. Yes. His intelligence community said it was Russia, but Putin denied it and denied it very strongly. What is going on you ask? Well, this is more in keeping with Donald Trump's belief that he knows better than everyone else from never he says, I know more about ISIS than the generals member, you said, I know more about technology than anyone else. And this is essentially, I know more about the intelligence community than the intelligence community. Simple fact, is he doesn't there's a reason we have experts in these fields who have spent lifetimes in careers studying this information and giving us their best analysis. But when you have a president in the White House who thinks he knows better and uses rather than the facts provided by his intelligence community, his gut in what he wants to believe it puts us in a very dangerous and precarious place in the world. Walkman the point for Monday, January the twenty eighth. I'm Chris cillizza cutting through the political spin to bring you the news you need to know the government is reopened. Yes. Late friday. President Trump announced that he would support a deal in congress that would reopen the government without any more wall or border money. But with the promise at there would be a negotiation between Republicans and Democrats in the house and Senate over a brief period of time to keep the government open and maybe find a solution on the whole border wall or no border wall situation. Now, the Gumby Neil, but is a good thing. Eight hundred thousand workers reather furloughed or we're going to work and not being paid for thirty five days, the longest shutdown in American political history. But don't celebrate too soon. And the reason for that is this is a brief reopening of the government. We're talking about less than three weeks now for a deal to get done. If no deal gets done. On Donald Trump has said he will either shut down the government again or declare a national emergency in which case he can take funds allocated for the military in use them on the border, and the government can stay open. Here's my guess. I don't think that we had a government shutdown for thirty five days. And that suddenly an agreement is going to be reached that congress and the president can agree on. I actually think people in congress. Whether it's Republicans in the Senate Democrats in the house, I actually think they might be able to come up with some sort of compromise where there's some money for border barriers or not call them, walls and Republicans in the Senate, and the house would be fine with that the issue is Trump is he okay with saying, okay? It's not a wall. It's a series of barriers are still slats or does he have to have that money dedicated to a quote wall, and quote, my guess is that he does he's got so much political capital, particularly with his base sunk in the idea of a wall, it's hard for me to imagine him walking away. Which means I don't think the government's going to close again, I think all sides, especially the president realized that was a very bad thing. But I do think we will see a national -mergency declaration at the end of this period. "Tired of spending hundreds of dollars prescription glasses. Xeni offers thousands of affordable eyewear styles starting at just six ninety five visits any today at Zanny dot com slash CNN. Welcome to the point four Friday January twenty fifth. I'm Chris cillizza cutting through the spin bring you the political news you need to know. Holy moly. What a day in news before dawn, I'm not exaggerating before dawn Roger stone in Florida, one time longtime Donald Trump advisor was taken into custody arrested on a series of counts of lying to both congress and to federal prosecutors in relation to his connections to conversations with both WikiLeaks and the Trump campaign about WikiLeaks. So innocence, what is alleged is that Roger stone was actively seeking to find out from WikiLeaks. The group founded by Julian Assange that became the platform through which emails from the Democratic National Committee and John Podesta Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman hack. By the Russians were put online via WikiLeaks. He was trying to find out in advance what they had and when they were posting, and then he was working back with some people senior Trump campaign officials as their identified in the indictment to keep them onboard. Now he was directed to do. So by again, senior Trump campaign ficials, we don't know who to sort of keep tabs on what WikiLeaks was doing. And see if he could find out anything in advanced stone who appeared in court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Friday said he didn't do anything despite the twenty four page indictment, which has numerous tax emails statements. He's made that would seem to suggest he's doing exactly what's being alleged Knowstone. Of course is famous for his deny deny deny defense. That's what he advocates in every situation. So maybe he's just doing that. But again, this is now the sixth Trump associate who has been charged in relation to the special counsel probe being run by Robert Muller into the Russian interference on two thousand sixteen election. This is a critical wink between someone who is a known affiliate of the Trump campaign and someone who has said publicly he was in touch with people close to Julian Assange and WikiLeaks, and we now know through the Texan emails that revealed in the indictment that stone bragged internally within the Trump campaign that he knew what was coming. He had told them he was star serve proving his value there in other big big big day in the Russian investigation and another bad day for Donald Trump. Now stone made clear after he was charged that he has no plans to bear false witness as he said it to say anything that Donald Trump did to turn on Donald Trump. But I'll remind people that lots and lots of people from Paul Manafort to Rick gates to Michael Cohen to George popadopoulos have all turned that of all decided that they are going to cooperate with the Muller probe. Who knows? If stone follows that. Or even if Muller wants a plea deal with stone. We shall see. That's the news you need to know for this. "Tired of spending hundreds of dollars prescription glasses. Xeni offers thousands of affordable eyewear styles starting at just six ninety five visits any today at Zanny dot com slash CNN. Hi, everyone. Poppy, Harlow gear in this week's episode of boss, files, charity, water, founder and CEO. Scott Harrison, how he went from nightclub promoter to seal philanthropist founding the nonprofit charity water sense brought clean water nearly ten million people poor communities around the world. His story is remarkable vowing to turn his life one hundred and eighty degrees. Check it out on my boss fouls podcast today. Out front next. Breaking news. The president tonight asking for a large down payment on his wall in exchange for ending the shutdown isn't that what he's been asking for the whole time. This is CNN learns exclusively the White House is preparing a draft national emergency order also out of touch the commerce secretary setting off a firestorm with his comments about federal workers and you'll hear President Trump's defensive them plus deutchebanks now cooperating with house investigators on its ties with Trump. Let's go out front. Good evening. I'm Erin Burnett out front tonight. The breaking news, stay tuned. That is with the house speaker is saying at this moment after two big failures in the Senate today and the president throwing out his latest catchphrase. One of the juice suggested is they open it. They pay sort of a pro rated down payment for the wall, which I think people agree that you need you need the will. Pro weighted down payment for the what what is that? I mean, there is no definition to that the five point seven billion dollars. The president has said his doer die for him. By the way, is already small down payment for a wall that Trump's own government says will cost twenty five billion dollars or more. So when he says a large down payment, what's he talking about part of the five point seven with an agreement to get there or what a Nancy Pelosi tonight responding to this idea of a down payment by saying, quote, that's not reasonable. In other words, nonstarter president in terms of his threats could be back to square one threatening alternatives. Like declaring a national emergency. We have a lot of alternatives. We have a lot of alternatives are a lot of people that want this to happen. We have a lot of alternatives. I have other alternatives. If I have to use those alternatives. I have to we want to go through the system, but we have a lot of alternatives. Couldn't be more clear. Right. Lot of alternatives. And if you don't go through the system, we're talking then about executive orders national emergency, and we have exclusive reporting from CNN at this hour. The White House is preparing a draft proclamation for President Trump to declare a national emergency along the southern border. Sources telling us the administration has found more than the by point seven billion dollars. Trump asked for so he asked five point seven, right? He wasn't getting that administration. Apparently, we are reporting has found seven billion dollars could be used in the event of such declaration. And our Dan bash is reporting that when the president keeps saying I've got other alternatives. He is actively still considering executive action to build the wall. Because simply the truth is this. He has not budged on this promise. We have to have a wall in order to have border security. You cannot have order security without a wall. The big question tonight though remains at what price and I'm not talking about dollars. Okay. Tonight. The former homeland security officials including Trump's own former chief of staff John Kelly a warning about a quote security crisis. That is having a detrimental effect on America's ability to respond to acts of terror where thirty four days on a shutdown that could be a matter of life and death. And when it comes to the ultimate price of the shutdown. The White House today did not have answers. If a plane crashes and people are killed because of this shutdown is the Walworth that well, I will say that at this point what the president and speaker, the president wants to do is have the Democrats come to the table that Democrats keep those a plane crash as the president is the one who's making a demand is the wall worth getting killed crafts. Demand is not gonna work if the shutdown leads to a terror attack that gets Americans killed is the Woolworth yesterday say that the Democrats need to come to the table. Have you Philip is out front live at the White House abbey? Does the president have a real idea when this whole idea of a large down payment other alternatives of what he really wants right now? It's not clear that the White House was really nailed down. What his bottom line is. Or if they do know what it is. They're not really telling anyone, including Republicans on Capitol Hill who are eager to know. How this all ends what we're seeing from the White House today is them saying really for the first time that they might be willing to open up the government for short period of time. The price though is going to be some amount of money that they have not specified that we believe is a portion of the five point seven billion dollars that that the president has asked for for the border wall. Now when Sarah Sanders released a statement today, she actually released two statements. The first one said a down payment on the wall. The second the second one said a large down payment on the wall. So you see here the White House trying to kind of inch up in term. Of the how large this down payment off to be. But

"Tired of spending hundreds of dollars prescription glasses. Xeni offers thousands of affordable eyewear styles starting at just six ninety five visits any today at Zanny dot com slash CNN. Welcome to the point for Thursday, January the twenty fourth. I'm Chris cillizza cutting through the political spin to bring you the news you need to know, we had some movement. I suppose is the way to describe it on the shutdown of the government now in its thirty four day on Thursday, the Senate considered to bills that would have ended the shutdown. The first led by Republicans was what Donald Trump had proposed over the weekend when he spoke to the country. The the specifics are five point seven billion dollars for wall funding in exchange for temporary granting of Dhaka after Donald Trump had suspended it in two thousand seventeen that failed. Then we had a democratic proposal which was the house proposal that had passed a democratic house, which basically all it did was say, let's reopen the government for two weeks, and let's figure out what can be done about funding the border security wall. So let's talk. Here's what's interesting both of them failed. So the government is not real breaking news probably should've led with that. But here's what's interesting the democratic proposal. So this is directly in opposition to Donald Trump who has said, we're not opening the government again until I get wall money. Six Republican senators broke ranks not enough, but six Republican senators broke ranks to vote with Democrats. They are as follows Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Susan Collins of Maine, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Johnny Isaacson of torture and Mitt Romney of Utah. So that's interesting. It's interesting because it suggests that there's at least some block of Republicans who are willing to go publicly on record in a vote they know will fail. There's no allusion that this was going to get the sixty votes it needed to move forward. They're willing to go on the record in defiance of the president of the United States and say we need the reopen. The government we can't continue this fight over the wall funding. Let's reopen the government, let's talk, and let's. Figure things out. That's a clear message. Mitch McConnell receive that message Donald Trump may receive that message. He should I don't know if he will. But it's clear that there is now at least a block, let's see if it grows, but a block of Republican senators who are ready for this thing to end, and that may be the opening of a bargain, a compromise that gets the government reopened. Remember, we are in the longest government shutdown in history as of tomorrow federal workers will have missed two full paychecks. Lots of people are struggling, and this at least a glimmer of hope that there may be a light at the end of the tunnel. Although it may not be the light that Donald Trump wants to walk toward that's news. You need to know for January the twenty four th four much more. Please check out my daily Email newsletter. "Tired of spending hundreds of dollars prescription glasses. Xeni offers thousands of affordable eyewear styles starting at just six ninety five visits any today at Zanny dot com slash CNN. Welcome to the point four Wednesday January the twenty third I'm Chris cillizza cutting through the political spin bringing the news you need to know. Oh van felt like the old days today letters being written back and forth. I from President Donald Trump to house speaker Nancy Pelosi saying, hey, I got that letter. You sent me on January sixteenth where you said, I should postpone my state of the union speech on the twenty ninth or just liver to you in writing. But yeah, I'm not gonna do that Trump saying I plan to show up next Tuesday deliver my state of the union speech. See then to which Nancy Pelosi responded via letter again, John and Abigail Adams would be proud in which she said, I won't be introducing a concurrent resolution authorizing you to deliver the state of the union address on how sore so you won't be doing it to its Trump responded. Not by letter. I'm not surprised and quo. So here we are. I think what you have to. Do is take a step back here and realized how abnormal all of this is Democrats had lots of issues with George W Bush's presidency. But they never didn't invite him to give a state of the union address. Republicans a lot of problems with Brock Obama's presidency. But they didn't disinvite him or not invite him to give state of the union address. It's because Barack Obama, and George W Bush. We're within the parameters of what we expect of a modern present or really any president. Yes. George W Bush was too conservative for most Democrats Barack Obama's too liberal for most Republicans, but they understood that the presidency the office mattered that giving a report card to the congress about the year that was in the year of that will be was important. I think what Democrats have realized in dealing with Donald Trump is you can't treat him like a normal president while extending the courtesy of giving a speech on the house floor might seem like the sort of thing that Nancy Pelosi should do her argument would. Be well, the government has been shut down for thirty three days in counting over Donald Trump's to mand of five point seven billion dollars for a wall along our southern border wall Pelosi to point out that the majority of Americans don't think will work and don't want. So I think what you see from Democrats, particularly. Now, they've retaken the house majority in the two thousand eighteen election is they are fighting fire with fire they are fighting unconventional politician Donald Trump with unconventional tactics. They are going to extremes politically speaking that they would not have gone to in years past because they believe that Donald Trump is someone who pushes and pushes and pushes. It doesn't even recognize that he's at or beyond past political extremes, though, the end of the day here. Take the politics out of it. Eight hundred thousand federal workers, either aren't working or aren't getting paid for their work right now. And that's been the case for thirty three days this poisons, a well, that's already been deeply. Thousand even more. It's impossible to argue that what went on Wednesday between Donald Trump and Nancy Pelosi makes compromise on the government shutdown more likely, in fact, almost certainly makes that compromise less likely, and that is the sad reality of our current state of American politics. Welcome to the point for Monday, January the twenty first happy Martin Luther King day. I'm Chris cillizza cutting through the political spin to bring you the news you need to know on this Martin Luther King day, we got a new candidate in the twenty twenty democratic presidential field, comma, Harris, the first African American and Indian American Senator from California announced it she was running for president. Now, she was elected to the Senate in twenty sixteen. So this is a relatively quick turnaround. But most everyone expected Harris to run for president from the second. And she was elected to the Senate. So not all that surprising. Where does she rank in our list of contenders? Well, the list that Harry Denton, and I put together has her number one at the moment. And I'll tell you why first of all she looks like the modern day Democratic Party. She's a woman she's Indian American and African American. She is quite liberal. She has a law and order background, which may allay some concerns. Democrats have about nominating someone who's too. Liberal. She's from California, a huge donor state a state to raise money in and a big state with lots of delegates. If this comes down to a nomination fight. The only thing Harris has going against her at the moment is that. Well, she's just not all that. Well known. Yes. Among democratic activists. She's a force. But she's not someone that the average democratic voter who doesn't live in California or in the Washington DC metropolitan area, probably knows she's gotta get better known. It's got a raise money to do that. She got a campaign in early states do that. And that's why she's in the race relatively early. Harris is also has to show improve it. She's got to go out and be a candidate for president that might seem easy. But trust me having seen lots of people who had bright futures or allegedly bright futures get out on the campaign trail for president and flop Scott Walker. I'm looking at you, Tim polenta. I'm looking at you Wesley Clark. I'm looking at you. I could go on and on point being it's harder than it looks. But right now based on what we know of her on paper, and what we've seen of her as a candidate. For Senate Harris's a top tier entrant into this race. That's news. Welcome to the point for January eighteenth. I'm Lauren key co author of the point I'm filling in for Chris today. And as always cutting through the political spin to bring you the news you need to know. So let's get on the same page late Thursday night BuzzFeed reported that President Donald Trump personally, directed Michael Cohen, his former attorney to lie to congress about the Moscow Trump Tower project for the records CNN has not corroborated this report. But as Chris writes, this could be these smoking gun for the Russia investigation, quote, if the BuzzFeed report is right, then the president of the United States, directed and underling to lie under oath, which is in and of itself a crime, and quote, we've had nearly two years of reports of Trump campaign officials having conversations with Russians, but as Chris rights, it's them insisting that it's all smoke and no fire, quote, a lot of people in Trump's orbit engage. Aging in conversation and relationships with Russian officials, but there's no evidence of collusion or certainly nothing that linked Donald Trump to any wrongdoing. And quote this report if correct links President Trump directly to that wrongdoing. Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani has already sought to knock down the story. Saying, quote, if you believe Cohen, I can get you a great deal on the Brooklyn Bridge, and quote, and as you'd expect Democrats have seized on this report air, colder, the former attorney general under President Barack Obama tweeted early Friday morning that buzzfeed's report, quote, if true and proof must be examined. Congress must begin impeachment proceedings and bar must refer at minimum the relevant portions of materials discovered by Muller. This is a potential inflection point. And quote. "Tired of spending hundreds of dollars prescription glasses. Xeni offers thousands of affordable eyewear styles starting at just six ninety five visits any today at Zanny dot com slash CNN. Welcome to the point four Thursday January the seventeenth. I'm Chris cillizza cutting through the political spin and bringing the news you need to know, Donald Trump is not someone who often takes the high road. And by not often. I mean, never witness what he did on Thursday. So on Wednesday as we documented on this audio briefing Nancy Pelosi sent the White House a letter saying that Donald Trump should reconsider giving his state of the union address to a bicameral session of congress in January twenty nine th because the shutdown was still ongoing and there were security concerns. Now, as I said, this was a political move Pelosi wanted to assert her power over Trump. The speaker of the house invites the president nights to give the say the union is not the privilege of the president United States to do. So. And there was relative radio. Silence. From Trump over the next twenty four ish hours. But little did. We know he was cooking something very special. Up in that very special thing was that Trump cancelled a planned trip that Pelosi was taking with several other members of congress to Afghanistan just hours before she was sent to go in a letter to Pelosi Trump said he could not in good faith, allocate the military plane to take Pelosi in the other members of congress to have ghanistan given the shutdown and her going away would mean that there would be no solution for at least the next week. Now policy was only going for five days. But you get the idea here. Donald Trump was exacting his revenge. This is Ted for tat Pelosi said, you can't get the union. Donald Trump said well, you can't go on your trip. If this sounds like the kind of thing that your kids fight about it is, unfortunately, the stakes here aren't who want to video game. That's at least my life. They are real life. They are eight hundred thousand federal employees who either furloughed or not being paid for their work. We are in the twenty seven day of this longest. Shutdown in political history. What this back and forth. Does is at the end of the day. Really make it less likely. We have a deal anytime soon. Donald Trump said in a private meeting with Chuck Schumer just after Christmas that the shutdown could go on months or even years. Everybody laughed and thought that was an exaggeration. And I still think the years thing is, but we're about to crest one month and things are worse today in terms of the likelihood of a deal and a reopening of the government than they were on the first day of the shutdown. "Tired of spending hundreds of dollars prescription glasses. Xeni offers thousands of affordable eyewear styles starting at just six ninety five visits any today at Zanny dot com slash CNN. Welcome to the point or Wednesday January. The sixteenth. I'm Chris Eliza cutting through the political spin bringing the news you need to know Nancy Pelosi made a power move on Wednesday. She sent a letter to Donald Trump and said, hey, you know, that state of the union speech, I invited give on January twenty ninth. Maybe let's not do that Pelosi said it security concerns due to the government shutdown as the reason for Trump not being invited. Or at least being disinvited to comma dress, a bicameral session of congress on January twenty ninth. Trump hasn't responded yet he will. But what Pelosi is doing? Here is clear. She wants to send a message, and it's a two prong message prong one. She wants Donald Trump to know that the government shutdown which he continues to hold due to his desire for a five billion dollar expenditure for a wall along the southern border has real world impacts, including on his life and prong. To she wants to remind Trump that according to the constitution congresses co equal body with the White House, and that they will exert their power as she sees fit. This is one hundred percent a provocation Democrats will applaud it. I wonder what the impact will be on Trump. And if there's a potential backlash here for Pelosi. Donald Trump junior told the conservative daily caller new site soon after Pelosi made this announcement in a letter that what she was doing is essentially trying to silence his father to not let him speak because when he spoke directly to the public he won. Now. I don't think that's technically true. And I don't think polling bears it out. But it does open Pelosi up to that criticism. And my guess is the present United States will follow the rhetoric of his eldest son and say that what Pelosi is doing is trying to put a stranglehold on his ability to speak to congress and to speak to the American public. It's a fascinating move and Issur to make what is already a very. Bad and very polarized situation here in Washington that much worse. That's news. You need to know for January.
