"The concern. I have there. Is that the chargers. Have a new coaching staff so they may not play as fast as they did a year ago but washington brings everybody back. So maybe it's a team. Assistant coach to be Carol at their at USC, So he's such a whole bunch of bases, and he has been contributing and counseling at the elite 11 quarterback camp for years. That's why knows this stuff. And as I said in your introduction, I want you to talk quarterback because I know you know him as well as anybody. I know. We just had the NFL draft when I had you on earlier this year, trying to pick your brains about what I thought was gonna be a good quarterback draft and damn, it didn't turn out to be five of them going in the 1st 15 picks. I asked you. How are these guys gonna fit? How they're gonna advance? How do you project? Um, is the pros I remember your answer. You said, Well, I could tell you what I think of them killed But I don't know until they land with a land because their system there coaching staff. The pieces around him will tell you how quickly they can be successful in this league. What we now know where everybody landed. Driver Lawrence with the Jags kind of Wilson with the Jets. Trey lands with the Niners Justin Fields with the pattern macula. And although he fell to 15, and then you fell on his feet landed on his feet, landing with the Patriots at number 15. Who landed the best out of that group for you. Well, I'll answer that in a second, but I think the guy that may have landed the best is Davis Mills. Real or ground goes to Houston Texans to shine walking status up in the air. You know, he already hearing from Pep Hamilton there, including the quarterbacks out there. I've heard from people via him of how easy it is to coach Davis because you have to teach him while you have to teach most rookies. Whether that means under center defense of understanding about progression, timing anticipation of the things that we've talked about for years. They aren't a part of everyday major college football, So I think he thinks that surprise a lot of people. To be honest now among those that you referenced I think it's a really fun discussion. I'm really probably most intrigued with Trevor Laurence. We saw him in high school. When I talked about this a while ago. He was he was the number one pick them. You know, you couldn't see that with many guys. He and Justin Fields were easily wanted to. And they were close to Jameson Winston, which was at the time my number one high school I ever saw. Those two surpassed him. So you knew he had a chance to be the number one pick, And then he did what he did, so I'm most intrigued with him. I'm excited about them because the cap space I'm a big fan of their GM simple key and how they're kind of rebuilding that franchise that team so instead of Sam and I'm also excited for Justin Field. I love where he landed. I'm I love what they do offensively when they're on the bears really creative, really intriguing. Anything to QB run game continually becoming a part of the NFL when you really study it. As is the run Pass option game. When you break down post snap our pose, which is quarterback having to make a decision truly read somebody on then Justin is an elite competitors. So I stick with the two guys that I saw in high school. When I felt they were the best. I think they The two most exciting right now where they landed Intriguing with Trevor Freaking in Central School, Of course with the Jets. That is gonna be fun stories to track But the guys I think they're gonna thrive this year, probably to their reference. Great read on Trevor Lawrence and Justin peeled. I remember when we had the conversation. They were coming in high school, You said Yeah, They're about 75 Miles apart. The two best quarterbacks coming into college football this year one in Athens, one up it Clinton. And sure enough, they lived up to their billing. But two guys did slide in between Kyle Wilson and Trey leads Kyle first if we, but they had you on late here and told you to Kyle Wilson was coming out when you think he would have been drafted. I think you probably would have told me day three. That's what I would have said, But he had this unbelievable year this year at BYU. Should that scare anybody that a guy can become this good after just one year of okay, play it best on the collegiate level. Well, I don't know. I think Zack Wilson to me is I come or watching this? His bowl game is freshman year and Texan with our lead. 11 Chance. Trent Dilfer. Bryant Stones kind of our our crew of quarterback coach is being like, Who is this guy? Just dealing? We saw him in high school. He wasn't gonna boy away with his measurables. He he couldn't do in shorts and a T shirt what he did in past in terms of all the off platform movement, even the competitive temperament. It's hard to see that his high school film You know you're getting into really prolific high school career. I'm excited about him. I think that he's had a beat. Incredible year, one of the starter and then last year played really well in between, You know, maybe wasn't it is greatest. Some might anticipate. Hasn't lost well. yeah week one. Sorry sir sorry trevor. i'm a little higher on trevor lawrence and you guys are for me. I compared to kind of like joe burrow last year. I was super high on him. When you look at the college stats obviously college stats. Don't always translate. But they did for joe burrow and i think they will for trevor lawrence in forty college football games. He threw for over ten thousand yards ninety touchdowns in only seventeen interceptions in like you said with the rushing piece. He had seventeen rushing touchdowns over his last twenty five games. So i can see trevor lawrence finishing between ten and twelve range. So you're drafted him for your starting running or quarterback. I mean i normally target quarterbacks relatively early so. I don't think i'm going to be in that situation. But if you stack you're running backs and wide receivers and tight end and you end up with trevor lawrence as a result. I think you could definitely do worse. A see the appeal. I have him kind of similar to like jalen hurts all right. Let's let's move onto the pick number. Two zack wilson with the new york. Jets matt she got some fun facts. Let's let's hear him. Well actually only have any fun facts. But i do have some wild player comparisons. I've already seen mahomes. Rogers in joe montana. Obviously some of the best quarterbacks of all time so his expectations are already way too high in my opinion but he does have the ability to improvise when the pocket collapses he makes them incredible offers balance throws. I think that's a big reason why he's been compared to those guys who is. He looks like he's sixteen. Now say prom night. Does he looks like a little kid. But also you know scott compared to all those guys and you know. Do the same thing where improvised through the back shoulder whatever was mitch trubisky and drew lock heart of those work jury still out but then let good. That's why like you always get these huge comparisons because everybody is so optimistic and wants their guy to do well but they really never pan out yeah. So what's a realistic year. Johnny Manziel, Giddap! So I think Zack Wilson. Is in a tough spot, too. Because I think it's coach wants to run the ball in play defense. I think Robert Salas gonna be like, Let's unleash Zach Wilson here. Just turn things over them completely. No, I think they're gonna be conservative. I don't know if you could do that, with the Jets, their offensive line still a work in progress. They're gonna be trailing in a lot of games. I just think it's gonna be an outfit. I just have a hard time thinking he's going to step right in there and do well step up in class and competition. New York's a tough place to play, too. I just I don't see it going well. I think there's gonna be a lot of growing pains with Zach Wilson. I'm not convinced he's ever going to really work himself out of that. That really narrows it down to the two quarterbacks who I think have the best chance. To succeed this season are Trevor Laurence. No surprise there. And Justin Fields. You know when he's ready, because not only will be the playbook, but you've got to feel comfortable that he could read defense's and go on the field that actually Be comfortable with the surroundings. You know that he's dealing with and when he goes up to center, he has more than just a nice idea of what's going on. He knows what's going on. And he can make the play. He can call the play. But, you know, let him take his time. I don't want to see him on the field the first year because it's gonna take at least a year for him to memorize that playbook and get comfortable with his teammates. And what not be able to ask the questions that he's going to ask cause he's gonna ask questions during the game as to what's going on. And just the longer he takes to get in there, the more comfortable he'll be when he does get in there, and I think the quicker things will turn around for the Bears because you'll have a quarterback that Knows what he's doing and act like he's in charge out there. "Coverage begins on ESPN and ESPN radio and boy What an exciting draft. This is going to be, especially as it pertains to the top 10 picks and Amber. We know a couple of things from free agency. Sam Darnell's, of course, is now a Carolina Panther and I want to start by just mentioning this at the top because I think it could have ramifications for those behind the Panthers. They're currently slated to pick in the first round at number eight overall. Now general managers got Fitterer said yesterday that the team won't decide on Donald's fifth year option for the 2022 season until after the 2021 NFL draft. Now I say that because That puts in just a little shadow of a doubt of okay if they're gonna wait to pick up his option or not, which is which is fair. A lot of people. You don't have to decide until the beginning of May. If you're gonna pick up Ah, players option or not. Just in the back of your mind makes you wonder. Is there any possibility the Panthers could actually select a QB? We We've talked about this draft class. How talented these guys are. Surely not all of them are gonna be phenomenal. Long term NFL quarterback. Somebody's going to be a bust. But I'm not saying the Panthers. You're going to take a quarterback. I don't think that's necessary at this point after what they've given up to get Sam Donald there, but it's just raised some eyebrows of is that a possibility that the Panthers would consider it. If that's the case. It makes number seven, which currently is held by the Detroit lines that much more of a coveted pick. Which leads me to my question. If you circle the Detroit's pick right now, is that what the New England Patriots are eyeing? And are they going to call the Lions and say, Hey, We want to move up. You guys need to stockpile picks. Let us come up and get a quarterback. What say you? Well, first of all, I don't think you make the trade that the Panthers made even though I understand they bought low on Donald. But you don't make that trade. If you're then going to draft a quarterback, I don't see how that makes any sense. I think what you do is you don't pick up his option until after the draft, cause you're hoping That teams like maybe the New England Patriots get fearful that you are considering Ah, quarterback, And so maybe they would even try to make you an offer And obviously them applying. The strategy does probably work out well for the Lions in terms of fielding offers as well, However, we're talking Patriots here, Katie. I mean the Patriots in the Bill Belichick. Error. They've done 14 trades I believe spent a lot of have involved moving up and down in the first round, however. None of them have seen Bill Belichick move up into the top 10. Where they're currently slated at 15. Kyle Trask. He's somebody who allegedly the Patriots have been searing in on and spending some time. We know that they got one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Yeah, He's not gonna wait until the fifth round of the draft kind of thing. But maybe he could take a Kyle Trask at 15th. Or maybe a Mack Jones falls to him there and he can still take a quarterback. "So guys let's start off with the quarterbacks as this is probably the least eventful group especially because we just let mark handle this position group. Because that is his forte his speciality. We don't even really need to go through the ordering or anything specific with this one as we're going to do it the other position groups but the thing that's worth noting is it. Mark was highly reluctant to really go past mack jones and then after thinking it over he threw in kellyn mind. Davis mills kyle. Trask jamie newman. And that was pretty much it so i think we can all agree here that the quarterback class in in this year's nfl draft isn't exactly very good on the back end. There's a lot of really good talent at the top but as we start to push towards the second and third round like we don't even have a third rounder in this group. There's not really a lot of good options now. It doesn't really tier that way. Joe obviously you have the tran said quote unquote time trevor. Lawrence. and then. There's a lot of debate on who that actual second quarterback would be adjusted sales from ohio. State zack wilson from byu. Mac from alabama. It seems like the jets. Presume that zack wilson from byu. And i mean. There's a lot of rumors that three the san francisco forty niners are really all in on mac jones but we'll find that out next thursday. It's gonna be interesting. I mean outside of the top five quarterbacks in legit all five of them could go for the giants would be ideal for the new york giants. San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles Make NFL Draft Trades
"Not in season. But March has been mad for the league, especially this week here, Schefty with what all went down. What happened here is that the 40 Niners have been trying to move up in the draft into the top five, frankly, for the last few weeks now, and they were able to cold together a deal with the Miami Dolphins at the same time that the Dolphins were going together a separate deal. With the Philadelphia Eagles that enabled the 40 Niners toe move up the third overall position to take a quarterback. And that means in all probability that we're gonna have quarterbacks go with the first three picks in this draft. We would think Trevor Laurence goes one Zack Wilson to and then the 40. Niners would have their choice. Assuming they stand three for the third quarterback in this draft. I would not dismiss Mack Jones in that conversation. Like Trey, Lance. They like Justin Fields. They're going to continue to do more and more work here in the weeks leading up to the draft, but they wanted to get into this slot now. So that they could have their choice at three. Knowing that they would get one of these quarterbacks a lot of people then wonder what happens to Jimmy Garoppolo. Sure, they're gonna be trading him right? And then there's a gap between gods trey lance from north dakota state and justin feels from ohio state. So i think he is clearly the number two quarterback in this class. The question becomes greenie. Is that the jets taking two or the jets gonna move out and allow a team like a carolina to that number two spot to take him. And that all depends on the domino's in terms of the veteran quarterbacks right now where does shawn watson wind up carson wentz. We know is going to get moved to chicago indianapolis. I think joe douglas. The general manager is kind of waiting. And seeing some of these other quarterbacks go and he's fielding phone calls he's not aggressively making calls but fielding calls to see maybe if they can move sam darnold and if they do exactly since the pick for the jets at number two and if not as i said i think the jets will move outta to and wilson will still wind up being that number number two overall pick in this class. I grew the. I've been saying for a while. I agree with you completely. He'll be number two. The question is who winds up making the peck. Then the other part of this is. I'm old enough to remember a time when we wondered if justin fields might supplant trevor lawrence as the number one draft now all of a sudden these the fourth quarterback off the board. He completed around fifty two percent of throws with five interceptions. Those games in my opinion. You look at it physically. He's big. he's sturdy strong who mobile. He's got a big arm all the traits that you look for. But he likes to see his receivers. Come open and get stuck on that. I read very frequently. So you compare him with trae. Lance and i have identical grades on the to train. Lance didn't play the level of competition. Didn't play as many games as is justin fields but i think he processes the game a little quicker in terms of going from his first into a second and third and seeing the entire field. So it won't surprise me if it feels is third quarterback off the board. But i think they're kind of bunched together in that third tier of quarterbacks behind lawrence wilson and then the other two and then i want to ask you about the guy that you currently have fifth because i'm a regular listener of the first draft podcast and so i'm listening the other day to you and field. Yates and mel kiper talking about what was going on at the senior bowl and everyone is raving about matt jones. Your buddy mel had max jones moving this thing and i believe he has him sort of. I believe he hasn't projected higher than you have in projected. What do you see for mack. Jones as this process goes on the fifth quarterback in the first round. Well i think what's going to happen.
