California faces more wind, snow in multistate storm
"California is hit by a powerful winter storm while Michigan is trying to recover from one that left hundreds of thousands without power. Several feet of snow and several inches of rain are possible in parts of Southern California along with gusty winds while frigid temperatures are forecasted in the north as the storm moves out Saturday, says national weather service meteorologist Zack Taylor. Flooding threat, there have been reports of like mudslides and washed out roads and that kind of thing, but the worst of it is kind of winding down. In Michigan, rinker has been without power since Wednesday when the ice storm hit and I knew immediately we're not getting power back for a minute. I didn't expect it to be multiple days. This is one of the worst ice storms to hit the state in decades. It almost is a little bit like tornado destruction. At least three people died in coast to coast storms, including a firefighter by down power lines, a pedestrian hit by a snow plow and a person dying of hypothermia. I'm Julie Walker.

"Hello and welcome to the MM QB NFL podcast on Gary brayley. I'm Connor or Connor, this was a this is a weird week 5 and it's especially weird for us because we're taping on a Monday morning instead of in the just ungodly hours of Sunday Night this time. I know you and my less annoying at this hour or more annoying it does sound like would you rather me, would you rather me be the last thing that you see before you get to go to bed or the first thing that you have to see when you wake up 'cause I imagine neither is pleasant. You don't keep a framed picture of me next to your bed stand to look at as you doze off. Yeah, no, you're equally annoying right now. Which is really not annoying. I enjoy our time together. I do too. Yeah. Yeah, let's get into this thing. And we're gonna start with the Sunday Night game. That was the Bengals of the ravens, obviously, won an a Justin Tucker last minute kick. Look, I think these teams are very evenly matched. I thought the ravens were probably a tad better in this one if Lamar Jackson doesn't miss a throw or two. They might end up running away with it. And the Bengals are still working through some things. I think still trending up from a very low place for the offensive line, but really no T Higgins, except for handful of snaps in this one. And it showed. And they're, you know, their deep passing game is just essentially nonexistent at this point after being such a big part of their offense a year ago. Yeah, so we'll start with the Bengals offensive line. I thought it was interesting when they tried to go for it on fourth down in their own goal line and Zack Taylor, I've never seen a coach. I mean, Chris collinsworth had surmised that Lyle Collins was supposed to do something differently. On that play. But Zach Taylor is making sort of a theatrical gesture here in chasing him up and down the sidelines to let him know that he was supposed to do something different. And it's both an interesting, it's an interesting look, right at where you are as a coach with your offensive line at that moment that you're not just going to let the position co channel this anymore and that you're so frustrated with these errors at this point that you're literally chasing because players, I would say this, the common psychological refrain right now is like players already know that they've messed up. So you don't need to go and tell them that they've messed up. Zack Taylor was like, this was bad enough that I need to chase you 40 yards down the sideline and let you know that you messed up. And so that might just be a display of frustration in terms of, hey, this is where I'm at with my offensive line right now. It was a low moment. I mean, I get where Zack Taylor was coming from here. It's a low moment in a frustrating season in a huge game. And yeah, you know, it's week 5, no one's winning or losing the Super Bowl based on what happened in week 5 here, but man, this was, this was a big moment and to have a very basic execution error at that point was unfortunate, especially, man, they did it. The ravens snuffed out the Philly special, or the Cincinnati special, or whatever you want to say it. That was the worst outcome for a Philly special inspired play I have ever seen. So I have a couple of questions about this. First off, do you think that every team calls it the Philly special now? Probably, right? So it's in the bank like when this is how calling plays works, right? Like Zack Taylor opens up his Xbox and he searches for plays and then he just hits like the Y button and that's what Joe burrow runs. That's basically how this works, yeah, yeah. Yeah. So he looks up Philly special. But in a lot of ways, it's like, okay, what happens now, right? It's the death of the Philly special. Once it's been snuffed out that aggressively and stomped out, are you ever allowed to is a team ever allowed to run it again? Do you have to wait 5 years? What's the rule? That was it. I mean, that was the tipping point. It's got to go, it's like when the wildcats stopped working. And people still sprinkled it in. It's not exactly like that. It's not like that at all. I don't know where I'm going with this comparison. But you know, the wildcat kind of went away as anything, but like a once or twice a game type of a package that teams use as opposed to using it quite frequently back in the Ronnie Brown days in Miami. But yeah, that could be it. I mean, it didn't work as designed in the Giants win. We'll get to that in a little bit, but it still resulted in a touchdown. It was still obviously you had the desired outcome, but this was Tyler Boyd took like a 14 yard loss on that from the goal line, which is as bad as it gets. It's one of those things that goes back to, I think coaching is one of the most complex and basic at the same time professions in the world. Like where there would be stuff that we would be absolutely amazed by that like, oh my God, they take this into consideration and wow, what level of work and that's incredible. And then there's the stuff that's like, okay, this has been the only trick play that everybody's used now for the last four years. We can come up with a new trick play. There's plenty of options out there. I'm sure that the eagles got that from someone who got that from someone who stole it from Clemson who stole it from north Arlington Christian high school in Texas and you could do that again. We could all we could all find a new trick play. And that's good. I'm ready for a new trick play. Yeah, I am too. Can't wait to see what's next. Save it for the Super Bowl though. Whoever's got the next good one. Yeah, whenever you make the Super Bowl next, that's when you shouldn't roll it out to them, I'll remember it like a Philly special. But yeah, I don't know. I don't have a, I don't have a ton to dive into with either of these teams. I think they're just both good teams. I think they're on that second tier, you know, in the AFC, it's buffalo, and then as everyone else right now, maybe the chiefs are somewhere in between the everyone else and buffalo, but yeah, both those teams are right there, offensive line has to continue to trend up for the Bengals, which again, I do think it's getting better. It's just, it's still bad. And they obviously they need a healthy tea Higgins because things are just not the same with Mike Thomas as a sort of complimentary deep threat there. He had some nice yak in this game though. He did some good yank. He did have a good yak. 33 yards of yak, I believe. Yeah. So I'll put this to you. This is sort of my, this is sort of Zach Taylor's cliff Kingsbury moment, right? And but it's the reverse, right? So I remember with the combine last year clip was like, yeah. In so many words, I need to do a way better job of like when one of our rod receivers goes down like the whole offense doesn't just explode. If your Zack Taylor, that wasn't even your Deandre Hopkins, like it's tea Higgins, who's very good, but you have three of those guys. And you've hated her. Like you have talented bodies, and there are other teams that are kind of outpacing you right now with like Baltimore. Like with Devin duvernay and Isaiah likely, as Mark Andrews, you know? And I think you could tea Higgins to me is not an excuse. Ja'Marr chase, okay, I get that. That's fine. But I don't know.

"The Bengal Super Bowl journey began during the 2020 NFL Draft. When they drafted Joe burrow number one overall. Now he's in his second title game in three years in the 2019 season he won the college football national championship. And here in the 2021 NFL season he's now in a Super Bowl one year in between one bad year with an injury in between two potential championships in three years, which is just incredible. Like, what? And it's undeniable that Joe burrow has turned Cincinnati around, which is very, very cool. I love Joe burrow. I was not confident he could do that. And he has. He's got them, not only, I remember when they drafted him, I was like, well, maybe he'll win a playoff game eventually. No, he won three in year two. Now he's in a Super Bowl. That's incredible. It's a really cool story. And I think now that Tom Brady has retired, my new favorite quarterback in the NFL is going to have to be Joe burrow. I love the guy. I really admire him. I respect him as work ethic. His swag or the way he carries himself. You can learn a lot about how to be a person by watching Joe burrow. His confidence, his work ethic, his drive. His leadership, his camaraderie with his teammates. There's a lot you can look at Joe burrow and go, um. As a man as a human as a coworker as a boss as an employee, whatever. You can learn a lot by watching how Joe burrow carries himself in the way and the things he does as a quarterback. I want to give credit to Cincinnati and the Bengals organization. For two things. Number one, they stuck with their head coach as Zack Taylor, when 2019, they went two and 14. Last year in 2020, it went four 11 and one. That's too bad years in a row. And when you're seeing NFL teams, we saw David colley get axed after one year and then I thought he overachieved. I mean, in the NFL, your job is never guaranteed. And the fact that Cincinnati stuck with Zack Taylor, even after two bad years, and it's been rewarded with a Super Bowl appearance is very, very cool to me. And it makes me happy for Zack Taylor because I hate seeing people fired in the NFL. Even people that are bad. I go, I still have a twinge of sadness for them and their family. Remember Zack Taylor was actually the rams quarterback coach before becoming the Bengals head coach..

"I had somebody next to me, you know, protect his identity. He's a good friend of mine, say, if the chiefs go down and score on this drive, it's church, meaning it's game over. Right. And they scored. And it was 21 three, and I went. I don't think so. I don't think this game's over. And when the Bengals came back and got that samaj P Ryan run, they got themselves immediately back into the game and then Eli Apple makes that tackle on tyreek hill. They have that something where they believe whatever happens in the game, good or bad. They're going to have a chance eventually in the end to win it. It's an interesting conversation though about Sean mcvay that Alex was getting at, though, because I remember he did a lot of reflecting on why he lost to the Patriots. Or Super Bowl. And he talked about in that he's wrote a story with SI. He did a lot of press about it. He talked about it and he said that he was going back years. And patriots film to comb through what Belichick did in this big game and what Belichick did in that big game. And he got so lost in the weeds of the whole thing. And I think the one thing that he really pointed to was the extra week, right? So he had all this extra time to go ahead and waste his time, essentially looking back at the 16 Super Bowl against Kyle Shanahan was a big one because obviously it's a somewhat similar system that Shanahan was running within Atlanta. So he went back and looked at what the falcons did and it's a totally different team, right? I mean, there's no relevance, really. And I'm wondering if he's learned from his mistakes, right? And I wonder, especially going up against as coaching staff like the bangles and Zack Taylor that know him extremely well. If he outsmarts himself again, I do wonder. I do want to be concerned about what the rams is that he's going to come out and get away from what they do as a team because he's going to be like Zack Taylor's going to know I'm going to run wide zones. Zack Taylor is going to know that I'm going to run empty. Zack Taylor is going to know that I'm going to run these four or 5 core passing plays. So we're actually going to go to our secondary group of plays. And maybe we haven't practiced those as much. And maybe they're not as ready to run them in a game. So this is a tough draw for to draw Bill Belichick and then to draw a guy that's super familiar with you, the second time around in the Super Bowl is Zach Taylor. It's tougher McVeigh and I wonder how much from the first experience he's going to take away and learn the second time around..

"What he was as a quarterbacks coach. That's a different animal than running the entire program. And Zach Taylor, obviously, I think, has done an incredible job getting helping to get the Bengals to this point so far. So let's go from there. Because last year, I know, I personally wasn't high on Zack Taylor. I know you weren't high on Zach Taylor. I know there's new personnel, but what's the biggest difference between Zack Taylor last year and Zack Taylor this year? Healthy Joe burrow, Jamar chase, he can do the things you guys are very, very familiar with the offense that Zach Taylor wants to run and he has run it to perfection with Brian Callahan with Dan picture who I had a good conversation with earlier in the week via Zoom, he has the kind of people here in place in a third year that's made the difference. And obviously Joe burrow being healthy and not tearing his ACL like he did in 2020. That's a big part of it. But guys, I will tell you the biggest change in this team. 21 2021 from 2020 is the defense. They went out. They spent the much like the Patriots did, spent the money on the defense, difference being, I think the Bengals had enough personnel that they weren't relying entirely on one or two players. I think with the Patriots, maybe, you know, the theory is Matt judon, wore out towards the end of the year, was not as effective as he was in the first half of the year for the Patriots. And with the Bengals, you have younger players, von bells only 25. People forget that, but he's only 25, Jesse Bates is only 24. And then you have Chad obey a woozie and Eli Apple has been reborn here in Cincinnati. "QB NFL podcast on Gary Grammy. I'm Connor. And Connor, we have the Super Bowl coming up in, oh, I don't know, a week. The rams are the favorites in this game and rightfully so. I think everyone understands why the Los Angeles Rams should be Super Bowl 56 champions in all likelihood. However, we're gonna spend the top of this show kind of telling you why they won't win this game. Why maybe the rams suck after all? Maybe. Yeah. Maybe they're the worst team in football when it's all said and done. I don't transient Hollywood types, just checking in pretending you loved football the whole year. Get out of here with your clown franchise. You're not gonna win this Super Bowl. I didn't see you guys before Robert Woods torturers ACL. There's no like I don't think anyone that's just a collector of vibes or judge or vibes. Like you can't deny the Bengals right now. Like 90% of the country is just absolutely on fire for this team. And they've got like a Loyola Chicago kind of vibe right now, which is almost impossible to cultivate in the NFL, but for some reason like everything that was perpetually unlikeable about this team for decades is now all of a sudden cute and fun. And that's what happens. And, you know, jail burrough MVP. I don't know, you can only ride vibes so far, I feel like, although we are now, you know, we're now in a one game scenario. And look, if you're talking broadly about the NFL, you know, whatever we saw the Texans beat the Titans this year, we saw the Jaguars beat the bills, things happen. We're not going to suggest this is a potential upset of that magnitude should the Bengals win this game, but objectively speaking, they are probably the second best team participating in the Super Bowl next week. But let's run down sort of the rams weaknesses to start here. And I want to start on the defensive side of the ball because we know how good Aaron Donald is. We know how good that front four is with a great gains have a breakout year and then obviously have von Miller and Leonard Floyd on the edges. They've had games this year where they just didn't really tackle very well. And you even saw it pop up Troy reader just a couple of tackles on that forty-niners last touchdown drive in the NFC title game. You've seen it come up and I feel like if you go back, I mean, frankly, if you go back to when the jets upset the Bengals, that was the case of a day when a defense that usually tackles pretty well, just didn't tackle. And now we have a rams team that they have a handful of games, or they just didn't tackle very well. Yeah, it's weird, right? When you have like a season where 13 of your games and this is including the playoffs, you've allowed fewer than a hundred rushing yards. But that said, games like the colts game, both of the forty-niners games. The ravens game, which they won earlier in the year, and the Cardinals game where they just got bowled over earlier in the year. They just stand out and, you know, maybe it's because we don't think of someone like Aaron Donald. You know, leading to a bad running defense, but as we've talked about in this show before, like I just think that there are some things schematically that, you know, they can use the ram strength against them. We've seen this when von Miller and Bradley Chubb were together in Denver, where a lot of teams would invite them up the field and then run into the gaps that they created with that kind of upfield surge. When Aaron Donald was playing the forty-niners, you know, he would find himself just fighting back a lot of down blocks, which are really easy things for offensive lineman to make and the forty-niners make sure it happens that way schematically. What the Bengals it's gonna be interesting, right? Because they can do the traditional outside zone stuff. They mix in a lot of inside zone too. And so I think that they're not like any team is not specifically one kind of school, but I think that Zack Taylor, if you have, if you have Joe Mixon, if you have the threat of burrow just hanging back there and being kind of like a young, thin Ben Roethlisberger and just slinging The Rock fearlessly, then you have to respect that and you have to lighten the box. And so lo and behold, you're going to if you're Zack Taylor, you probably like the odds a little bit. I mean, Joe Mixon is a bigger guy. I think he's they're gonna try to ride him a little bit. We saw a couple of times that chiefs game. I mean, look, we'll get to that right side of the Bengals offensive line. It is maligned and it's maligned for a reason here. They just haven't done very well this season. There were times where they got mixing behind that side of the line and had some success in the cheese game. I'm stealing someone's line on Twitter and I'm very sorry for that, but someone pointed out like, you know, their screen games kind of effective to that side. You can't really tell if your defensive lineman, if you are getting upfield really easily because of a screenplay or just a regular play because you get a feel pretty easily on any play. But they've had some success doing some things to that side. I mean, it past protections and issue. But they can still have some semblance of balance here. If they can get the run game going a little bit. Yeah, I think so. I mean, they went through a lot of effort, I think, in Kansas City to establish that as sort of a tone center they use Jamar chase is that backfield satellite to kind of try to not only gauge the coverage and figure out what the chiefs are doing defensively, but to peel guys out of the box and see if they can get more defenders out of the box and lighten the load a little bit for mixing. So I think Zack Taylor is just kind of an experimenting with stuff like that. And if you're Sean mcvay, I think what's interesting about this and it's interesting any time you play somebody that's coached for you is that they kind of understand the breadth of you and what you're trying to accomplish. And what's interesting about Taylor is, you know, there's so many influences on that scheme that I just think, you know, I'm not saying Sean mcvay and Raheem Morris can't figure this out and I'm not saying that Sean mcvay and Raheem Morris don't have depth to their scheme, but it's like, what if Zack Taylor goes, you know, I was talking to somebody today about this. Like, there's a lot of this 2015 dolphin stuff. Like, you know, Gary kubiak Broncos sort of an offense that they can just sort of call upon at any time and sort of start running that. I mean, you know, he's got a lot of weird stuff in his back pocket that this is the time to see it in the Super Bowl. This is when you want to show it. But I think he probably knows a little bit more about what mcvay is going to try to do versus McVeigh tried to guess what Taylor is going to do, because at the very diverse coaching backgrounds, and I think that you could probably present something a little bit broader and more unique in the run game there. Well, let's go to the other side of the ball and again discuss why the rams are simply just a terrible football team that are lucky me in this position. This offensive line and you saw it frankly you saw it in the last two meetings with the forty-niners, maybe not as much in the victory over the bucks and over the Cardinals, so you can tell how.

"You had one of those last week against the Titans, but the Titans did a nice job of shutting him down. Bengals score less than 20 points. You know, what if you don't get one of those this week? That's like my big thing. And I don't think Joe burrow is gonna play bad. I think he's gonna be pressured. But if you don't get Jamar chase going and the chiefs figure out a way to slow him down, which I think Steve spagnola has been in the league for a long time, can probably handle that. What do you have left, especially if Chris Jones is going to dominate in the interior? I don't know. I like, I don't know if it's like, you know, 7 out of ten or 6 out of ten I would say times the chiefs win that. I think it's a scenario where and I think you got to touch on it there. The Bengals need to be like plus two in those big plays, those 50 plus yard plays. And I'm not, I mean, look, no one should get more of those and the chiefs than any given match up. So it's up. That's the formula it's just not a likely path to victory. Yeah. Jamar chase was so ridiculous in that game, by the way. But if you're the Bengals, this is gonna get clipped now and put on like Cincinnati area radio and when they make the Super Bowl and I'm already like so to go back, I pick every single game of the year back in July, right? And then that week, you predict every team's record because you pick every game. And that week is always flooded with calls from every radio station wanting you to come on and defend your picks. I think ray ratto from San Francisco, the legendary ray ratto. Said it best when he's like, who are you and why are you doing this? Doesn't make any sense. "Now, the final coach who isn't potentially I can't even talk. The final coach is potentially in danger of losing his job is Zack Taylor, the Bengals head coach. He's been there for two years. He has a 6, 25, and one record as an NFL head coach. Two years ago, Andy Dalton was his quarterback. They went two and 14. They got the number one overall pick. Last year started really well. They had Joe burrow playing awesome and then Joe burrow got hurt out for the year. And it's a bit cheap to blame a coach for having a bad year when you're starting quarterback, gets injured and messes up their knee. And then on top of that, you know, the Bengals late in the year beat a really, really good Pittsburgh Steelers team. And they did it without Jill burrow, did it with a backup quarterback and they beat a playoff team Pittsburgh. So it's a mixed bag for Zack Taylor. Two years ago, it seemed like they were tanking, trying to get the number one overall pick. Last year, Joe burrow got hurt, so they had no quarterback. Now this is year three for Zack Taylor, and he has to show the world he can coach. Now part of why Zack Taylor might lose his job as to make room for Joe Brady. Joe Brady, remember, worked with Jill burrow in college at LSU. He is currently the Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator, so they can fire Zack Taylor, simply to make room so they could bring in job radius when you ex head coach. But man, I really think that blame exact tailor for the bad year last year seems very, very heartless and totally unfair. So I'm not a fan of, we'll see how the year goes, maybe week 17 I'll be saying different stuff. They are likely to sideline green six to eight weeks up really not a good situation and teammate Tyler Boyd questioned the turf. The team was practicing on when green was injured. It was terrible. I couldn't run any routes out there. I'm falling all over the ground man it was it was bad. It was rocks pebbles out there man it was somewhere we should have been just feel like the turf was old. You know it just wasn't we didn't get good traction in and out of her breaks. You know a lot of guys not just me was on the ground but I mean who wasn't up there that long but there's gotTa make a word man. We gotta get it well. The turf was that welcome stadium at the University of Dayton where the bengals are practicing coach you buy this well. I haven't seen the video really in this instance probably not but I will say that you know feel. Surfaces are very very important for player safety. You know whether it's a grass field you know what is the old school latch with Pittsburgh steelers. We practice on hard old school astroturf every day for five years so no you got to look at it but in that instance I think it was a matter of the kind of rolling up on the back of his ankle and that was what I saw caused that particular injury about sure it was the field service problem here in addition to the injury of course which is is paramount is the optics of this and when you have a player who says this sort of perception is reality and then then it's out there and you got players. You might believe this is the case whether the optics to this are awful and this time of year teams are trying to realize their fan N._B._C.'s. I've been a part of that for a number of years. Every team has an operations department and kind of like the offensive line. Green himself is going into the last year of his contract so at a time when we're talking about new deals for Michael Thomas in Amari Cooper Julio Jones guess who else was on that list of A._J.. Green so what happens now to his value as argument now that he is going to be out for some period of time and organization standpoint. That's a really difficult position because A._J.. Degrees could say hey. I've done all the right things. I was out there practicing at the university because you wanted me to and now that's going to hurt me and take money out of my own pocket. It could really cause a situation to go awry very quickly and again even if the operations team went through all the protocols the the perception is that this feel wasn't safe and now they have a problem with one of their best players. Yeah I think that team without J. Green if you look at their record versus with huge and so he's a big part of their team. He's going to be missed. This is that there's a fair amount of injury here to start. You know this is not the way not the way you want to get off the ground. No team does last last year he missed time with a toe injury and when he was out of there the offense did not operate the same toddler boys production fell off and everybody thinks talent boy. We'll just emerge as the number one guy and he's a really good wide receiver but the fact that matters A._G.. Green when he's out there makes tyler. Holler bought a better received. John Ross still has not stepped up as the first round draft pick that he was. He says he's ready to do that. Will they need him to do that. They've got some other players Alex Berenson some good young receivers but A._J.. Green is on a level with Julio Jones. He's is that kind of talent and when you Jack Taylor coming into his offense it's hard to get by without somebody that good.
