"Now is we get you ready for the Reds and Giants? I'm Dave Arm Brewster. This series winds up tomorrow at 12 35 Friday night the Milwaukee Brewers has mentioned are in town for three games. 7 10 on Friday. 4 10 Saturday and the wrap up this Sunday at 1 10 This'll. He's the Hall of Fame highlight with Reds historian Greg Roads, You know, we've got a lot of highlights and reds history, but we don't have many that feature donkeys. Maybe you've noticed that Very few doggies. Now the Reds did have the Big doggie and Adam Dunn but a real donkey. Well, wait a minute. It turns out we do have one thanks to the friendship between Joey Votto and his longtime teammate at shortstop Zack Cozart. Zaka developed an interest in Doc. He's thought a donkey would make a great family pet and mentioned it to Votto. This was in 2017. Cozaar was having the best year of his career and had a shot at making the All Star team for the first time. And so Votto promised. Zach, You make the All Star team. I'm gonna buy you a donkey. Well, Zac's first thought was gosh, I should have said I love Lamborghinis. But no a donkey it would be and Votto took every opportunity to publicize his offer. Always showed up for a pre game interview in a doggy suit. He had T shirts printed that said, Life is better with a donkey. The press wondered if the donkey would hang out in the clubhouse. I think it will make it appearance at Joey, but I'm not pushing for its own locker. The Stones breathe a sigh of relief. Those aren't appreciated The publicity's but admitted that every interview he did always included a question about donkeys. But the publicity's didn't hurt that and hitting over 300 helped him win the All Star vote. And a few days later, Bado delivered the donkey Cozaar named him Donald Donald the donkey, a memorable part of Zach Coz Arts Fine career here in Cincinnati. And no, We don't have that donkey at the Reds Hall.

"Nice right now. 513749, 7000 and 1 800 big ones. I I asked you this I could accused of being pessimistic about the reds and actually, if I was If I was pessimistic about the Reds, I wouldn't even be bringing this up. Because what they would have done this offseason wouldn't have mattered. I actually think they've got a shot to be pretty competitive. With a team that You know, as most of not everybody, by any stretch certainly know Trevor Bauer two guys in the bullpen, but with the guts of a team that Was here last year. And we thought before last season was gonna be pretty good. And you know, maybe over full 162 games late, they would have been really good. But It's I think we walked away from last year going. You know what this team is? All right. It needs help. It needs offensive help. Um, and they haven't gone out and gotten I gotta be honest with you of the short stops that have been mentioned. I'm not sure any of those air huge major Offensive upgrades. Probably a little bit better, at least than Freddy Galvis. But Marcus Simeon had one really, really good year. Other than that he's Been a slightly better version of Zack Cozart. Um, D d Gregorius had some really deliciously good seasons with the New York Yankees couple of years removed from them. But Is it simply going to be a matter of hoping that some of these guys who hit poorly in 2020? Hit better in 2021. If that's the case, that is an enormous credit to a lot of those players, but In terms of what the front office has done. And what I would think would be considered a critical off season. Well, you're within this window that you're trying to win. They've done nothing. Nothing. If you want to, like, you know, use the excuse of well, they lost a lot of money last year, and they're not going to make us much money this year. That's it. That is a business thing. It might be the right business decision to not add to the team. That payroll. Keep everybody else intact. But from a baseball standpoint. Can you really look at this year's team? And feel better about Their chances compared to last year. When they were all right. 31 to 29. I struggle with that I I struggle. I struggle with thinking that this team could take what it did last year and build upon it. I was asked after the Reds lost the two games in Atlanta. What was this a successful season? And my response to that on multiple platforms was asking me at the end of the 2021 season, because if it's used as a jumping off point, then yes. That was a step they had to take. Let's let's get to the postseason first and then go from there. Question is, can they go from there as currently constructed? I gotta be honest with you. My job is to like definitively tell you yes or no, I lean toward no. But I'm more interested in what you think your phone calls will be next. 513749 7000 and 1 800 Big £1.700 is absolutely free on a TNT. "Regime that does stuff a different way. Right? They're not. I'm not going to do things in the traditional format. So why would you look at them to trade traditionally? And he just said it right there. Oh, there's buyers and their cellars or There are people who just sit there and monitor and wait for the opportunity and pounce. Have you ever have you ever watched a snake eat? You never know someone who has a pet snake. Um, I had some friends at a pet snake in college. I know, right? It's not Ah, normal. But Feeding time was like you could get everybody in 12 apartments to leave whatever they're doing and come over to watch feeding time because the snakes if you have a pet snake, you feed him like I don't know what's every two months or something? No. What was it like? What's a week? I don't know. I don't know. But you know, college kids, They're all just sitting there like it's Tuesday. 11 42. What do you have to do Right now? Nothing. Do you want to watch his snake? Attack a rat inside of a cage. Yeah, there's the conversations that would happen on the block. But anyways, everybody would come over and you just watch the snake. And the rat goes into the You know, it goes into the cage and the rats just kind of like I don't know. The rat looks uncomfortable, but also not freaking out, not running and the snake just sits. Sits watches. Sort of positions itself. And then bank strike right right at the right time. It's really amazing to watch. I know it makes some people uncomfortable. It's the food chain. It's it's all good, but But anyway, that's kind of the way I've I view the Giants on the trade market. You saw what they did to the Angels last year. Angels are sitting there going, okay? We want Anthony Rendon's The Giants have nothing to do with that, right. Anthony Maradona is a free agent, the Giants and Angels or not the same division. They're not the same league. They're just sitting there. And the Angels, like, okay, we we want Anthony ran down and we really need to clear seuin salary to make that work. So one of the Giants do they get on the phone and they're like, OK? What? Ah! What contracts do you want to get rid of? Oh, well, My gosh should be amazing. If you take Zack Cozart. The Giants were like, OK, Zack Cozart. Alright, weaken. Ah, let's discuss Zack Cozart, and the deal was never about Zack Cozart. Who? The Giants. I think DF aid about 47 minutes after the deal, because what they did to the Angels has said if you need salary will take your Zack Cozart contract off your head. Oh, by the way, go ahead and send us Your first round draft pick from last year. Cause we really liked him, and we almost picked him. But then we wanted another route, but we still like him. The Angels needed to get Anthony ran down. And poof, the Giants get Will Wilson And the fans look at this, and many of you are like, OK, well, who's well, Wilson and will Will Wilson workout And maybe you haven't even heard a well, Wilson and maybe he will. Maybe he won't pan out. But what if the Giants give up for him? Nothing that's nontraditional dealing. And and playing the game so that you position yourself for Ah, high payoff with minimal risk. That's it. That's the game he's playing. And the position that they're in right now doesn't really call for any traditional dealing. So I think they were looking for non traditional opportunistic moments they didn't materialize. And that's fine. That's fine. They're checking boxes. "Up after my great interview with Mo No. First of all, welcome this Monday afternoon to the Bill Cunningham show. Willie, How you doing? I'm in chaos. I'm in turmoil way Don't have enough We got and this is your week Is this is that man convention? This is your week, man. You've been waiting years for this. This is it. It's the coronation of Donald J Drop. He will levitate. Walk on water. He's going to cheer the sick and give sight to the blind is this week and now? We got nothing but chaos. First of all within your Bailey Wick. If somebody would have said to you. The trading deadline, I guess is Monday week from now is that correct? Correct. Yeah, well, the Reds be buyers or sellers at this point. Why are we saying this Mo why? We said, you know, the season started a month ago today. And if you remember they won that night convincingly over the Detroit Tigers. And it was we were calling it like, aside from the obvious not being able to actually go to the game, one of the best opening days the Reds have ever had this great debut by Mike Moustakas. Sonny Gray was that was lights out that night. The fact that a month later that that is a a fair and legitimate question, and it is, by the way, a fair and legitimate question is not something that I would have entertained. This has been a truly UN enjoyable experience. Over the last month on field off field. They've had a Koven 19 interruption. The Thom Brennaman situation and then ah, really string of uninspiring, frankly, boring games the Reds have played. This offense has often been punchless. It was for the most part this weekend in ST Louis. The new acquisitions, You know, Nick Castellanos got off to a great start, and the numbers are still more than respectable, but he has certainly leveled off over the last couple of weeks. The new acquisitions have not added up to a team that really feels any differently than any of the previous six and a month into the season With a little bit more than a month to go, Willie this team is the third worst winning percentage in the National League. This has been truly they have time. They've got to do some stuff. They need individual improvement. But this month, I'm hard pressed to find anything that I would call fun. Enjoy past opening day. That was my speech was ready. I was cut corners interruptus. I was ready to go. And I thought, okay, this team is built the win friends of mine, not yours. Put up over $1000 each on the over under being I think it was 30.5 for 31 wins. I did not see 1.5 already. I did not get in because I'm thinking while I've been disappointed so many times, I want to sit back and enjoy the ride and watch my buddies win money. Guess what The odds of them getting like. 32 wins has almost not existing. How's it possible? What the starting pitching being so good that the Reds are so bad? Well, you go back to the over under as as somebody who every single year bets on the reds over and hasn't hit since 2012. I did the same thing. They've got to go 21 13 the rest of the way just to get to 32 in 28. Now I think if they get there, they're going to be a playoff team. Obviously, the Reds do have the soft landing of 18 National League play off, but The answer to that question is sort of multi dimensional. I'll focus on the offense eight times this season, The Reds have scored two runs or fewer eight times in 26 games. Yes, they've had bullpen issues. Yes, they've had injury issues to the starting rotation. Job, but but that to me, speaks to the 11 and 15 record. More than anything. They've lost all of those games. So when they've scored three or more runs, this team is simple. Math tells me 11 and seven That's pretty good. You went 11 out of every 18 games. You're gonna win the division pretty convincingly. That's been it for me on a on a collective level on an individual level. Aside from Jesse Winker And to a to a degree. Castano's find me somebody having a good season. Joey Vados numbers are worse than they were last year, which was the worst season of his career to date. Might lose Doc Asses. Numbers leave a lot to be desired. Freddy Galvis, We went ride or die with Freddy Galvis at shortstop. Who basically is that Cozart? Guess what? Freddy Galvis has provided some Poppy does have five homers, but Freddy Galvis is Zack Cozart, and he's not that good defensively. You Hani Oh Suarez, coming off a 49 homerun season has a batting average of 1 49 show Go. Akiyama was supposed to fix this team's inability to have guys get on base show Go. Akiyama's on base percentage is 307. They are a startlingly one dimensional team, Their third in the National League in home runs hit yet their 11th and runs. They cannot score if the ball's not going over the outfield fence, and I don't see that changing anytime soon, and we have it. So here's the big question. No, it's a bit early. In the interview. The big question is this are the Reds buyers or sellers. If somebody was said to you a month ago, the Reds are like one of the worst teams in the National League. You wouldn't believe that we we always sing the praises of Luis Castillo. He's zero and three with the 4 44 IRA, which is Midland at best, And, of course, Trevor Bauer is all star quality. Sonny Gray's unbelievable, But then you got three other starters coming. And I'm saying the Reds can hit when the Reds get behind. I soon they're going to lose When the Reds get up. I wait for you to come in to blow it, And so are the reds, buyers or sellers. I think the Trevor Bauer question is fascinating. You know, you mentioned Luis Castillo. Louise Castillo is under team control. He has been average since not just the beginning of this season has been average since the All Star break last year. Sonny Gray is under team control for two more years. Trevor Bauer is fascinating for a couple of different reasons. Number one. He's right now the best pitcher in baseball in E. R. A of 0 68. He has been dominant number two..

He has been dominant number two. He has no contract for 2021 his deal, but before the shutdown for this season was one Here at slightly over $17 million. I listen to Bob Castellini on your show on opening day. Talk about how much money the reds we're gonna lose. The Reds are probably going to lose somewhere in the neighborhood of 32 32 $50 million this season because they can't sell a ticket. So after an offseason, which they spend 160 mill, are they going to be able to pony up the kind of cash to keep Trevor Bauer? If the answer is no. Then you go to the third factor, which is the number of starting pitchers around Major League Baseball on contending teams that have gotten injured Trevor Bauer would be an exceptionally exceptionally valuable commodity on the open market, exceptionally valuable commodity on the open market now. The trade deadline's a week away. The Reds are certainly not out of the postseason hunt. There's a general malaise in the entire National League if the Reds could win three out of four this week in Milwaukee boom right back into it, But I think if your Dick Williams you've got to consider all those factors and at least listen, I know how that's going to come across. I know how it's going to come across that in this season of being all in five weeks after opening day, we're going to trade the best pitcher on the staff. But are the Red's going to sign Trevor Bauer if he answers? Is yes. Awesome. Awesome If the answer is no is currently constructed. Is this team going to win the world Series? If the answer to that question is no. Then I at least think you have to entertain the idea of the Reds moving on from him. Nothing against him. I'd love to have him. I would love to have Trevor Bauer next year. But if you're not gonna win with them, and they're not gonna be able to afford to keep him and I don't know that they will or won't But if they if they decide we can't afford to keep him Oh, my God, what you could maybe get in return for Trevor Bauer. It's staggering to think about and the other issue from an ownership perspective. Assuming the numbers 50 million, which is a low number. I've seen ESPN reports that each team may lose north of $100 million, which means that the capital call happens to the owners and the owner's hit their pockets and pay out the money..

So much for the phone call what he was doing last night in the fourth inning first in and quite frankly, I I don't know for Freddy's numbers, and you have to put these in the context of small sample size. As we say Freddy's numbers offensively Herb are okay. He's starting to swing the bat, Okay, said Homer's The last couple of nights. I gotta be honest with you. I'll complain about what they're not getting from shortstop. If the other guys the guys that are supposed to carry this team offensively, start pulling their weight. Okay, so everybody else is having a great year. But we got to complain about somebody. So it's closer. Like okay, fine. That must mean everybody is really, really good. To me. I think he's now what he start because he's not a great right handed hitter. Against Kershaw. Could you move the line up around with somebody else plays first base without built on Thursday. I think that so many options. I think what we're going to see is different guys, different places all these different Situations last night Du Bon, who hasn't played a whole lot of center field, he's in center field. "There's going to be sous. It's it's going to be there. The NFL. Lots of players have talked about it. Major League Baseball, I think has fallen behind the sport that Obviously honors Jackie Robinson once a year, but but many people have thought the baseballs kind of falling behind. And obviously one of the reasons is Is that there's not a high African American population among its players. So I think that and the fact that baseball was returning and we were all excited, and you and I were talking a lot about the broadcast, and I was kind of focused on that. Then all the sudden As the thing starts, there's Gabe Kapler. And so Yeah, I thought it was. I thought it was really cool. And while you were gone, we had Howard Brian on and he actually had written a piece on Bruce Maxwell back. Maxwell had Actually responded to what Gabe Kapler did. So, Yeah, it was for an exhibition game and we'll get into obviously what was going on and first base and we'll go. We'll get on with with the whole broadcast because I did what you did. I listened to both broadcast. I was listening in the in my chair watching and then I have the like You said. I had the APP. Oppa's well and I was trying to take a listen to both but man for an exhibition game. Really cool stuff on my Cindy Got that suited radio Emperor of the air will be at bad apt for this at bat soon in radio one. Yeah, I was listening to that. And then I was a lot of soon radio on John. You could I wonder if I could put us on right now and then follows whenever I talk and go right to you, just this app is amazing. I love that you hear is right now I could cause you. Oh, I hate my voice Stop. Those people are like now and then we go back to John and we pick it up. Because that's the hard thing about radio. It is not like TV and you know, general years ago and now the X one DVR. You could pause it. This is number by the way when he first got that held me I wasn't. She was my wife and I remember my friend. We had it. So I go over to his house, and he's like you won't believe what you could do A TV now and he froze. The TV's like, Go get a beer goes back. Sit down. We can reverse it when it was. It was like what you can reverse. You could stop the TV. I could go get a beer or what? It was just my mind was blown. I remember that day. I remember where I was the one that was watching about it. Also, you could record so you could record a game. And unlike you know, VHS, VCR's You have to wait for the entire game. Toe end to start to watch it back. So you know me. I'm off today and I gotta work a game. Tomorrow s o. I'm not gonna watch it live. I'm gonna watch it. But I gotta wait till this game Heads to read are gonna switch the tapes. The beautiful thing about TV shows you could pick it out of anywhere. But is this the first time we've had away? Two paws. You could rewind by 32nd intervals and fast forward radio is going to change my radio listening, John. I'm on a very nice well, Wilson's going tojoin US prospect from the Giants. Who actually stole from the Angels. They just take take on some money of Zack Cozart, and then they grabbed the former first round pick, Will Wilson so we'll talk to him 11 o'clock as you said Glenn Kipper with the A side of things at 11 30 Ian Rappaport rap sheet will give us cover everything. That's the way we have rap sheet on since message, you two fought New Orleans. I can't remember. We did not fight in New Orleans. You have a way of exaggerating things. Stamina. I'm going to nap. I'm going fast forward. It's erroneous. Factual way. Have fun at the truth. All right, so we'll have one. If you're not alone, two o'clock Corona Virus Task Force briefing region O Taskforce medicine course. Alright, my lice on my CLO rex rate. As you said, we did get some good news in the NFL, So we'll talk to him about all of that. Maura Last night's game will get into the broadcast more. We'll let you hear from Gabe Kapler, by the way, Holder says. We have a bunch of sound from Gabe Kapler. So you were talking about it, so we'll play some of that. For you as well. Charles and Draymond. We're on a new show on TNT, the arena so they'll clear the air a little bit. Dwight Howard clearly doesn't understand the virus or any other thing as well. So we have a ton of stuff to do. We'll do it all. Starting next stop inland only here on the sports leader. You're smart speaker is a radio. You here. Papa and London home. "The right place I have invested. In four, maybe five different reds topics tonight We're into hour number two. And this thes two topics and this are related directly to what is not happening tonight. The All Star game. How many show of hands? Think of it. It just It just in hits. You as so sad Like, Wow, we would be would be at the All Star break in a normal year. Tonight would have been the All Star game from Los Angeles. And instead, we're one week out from the first exhibition game for the Reds, Reds and Tigers one week from tonight, broadcast right here on 700 WLW but with the All Star game in mind, and we always have some fun topics around the All Star game. And we got to get creative. I've joked this whole last four months has been like one long All Star break. He's always looked forward to the All Star break during Ah, normal year because Yu Yu have four nights without anything going on, so I always say it's like a clean slate. I get to create Whatever I like for the show for three hours. That's fun doing it every night for the last 120 Today is day number 1 26 is a little bit different. But ah, there is the creativity that like from that, so let's do this. When what I say all Star game and Reds. I'm looking for a a memory related to the Reds in the All Star game. Ah, moment a player. Maybe you attended an All Star game either here in Cincinnati or another All Star game reason I think of this one. I used to love the All Star game from this standpoint in in recent years, I mean, other than the 2015 game here, the All Star game is kind. Ah ah! But now that it's gone, I'm like, Oh, man, I really miss the Allstar game. And just from a kid's standpoint, it used to be the coolest thing When you got to see one, the American League guys you never got to see. I mean, whether it was George Bread or Eddie Murray er, Jim Palmer or Ah, yes, there guys like that you were seeing him like for them other than like this week in baseball or the game of the week. Really see them for the Rod Karu for the first time, one of the things I loved about the All Star game, but I love when when the Reds players were introduced, there was just always maybe it's just me. But but a sense of pride, watching them run out of the dugout, introduced the starting lineup or being introduced along the baseline and stepping out and tipping their cap. And the reason I say that I watched over the weekend, the 95 All Star Game And I watched Lark and be introduced and run out and Ron Gant run out. I saw a Reggie Sanders stand at those take a step forward and tip his cap and day. Alright, Dave, smiling and John Smiley step forward and tip his cap. I just always just think that was the coolest thing one to see the faces of a lot of guys you'd only like saw their names and box scores back there. But when it was your guys the sense of pride I went back and looked today and this is this is what staggering about the Reds in all Star games from 1968 to 1980. A good chunk 68 to 1980. The Reds had at least four players on the All Star team every year. From 68 to 84 at least every year. In 76 they had seven players. In 77. They had seven players in 78. They had six players in the decade of the seventies, The Reds had 52 All Star selections, not 52 different players, Obviously Big red machine guys multiple years, but 52 selections in the decade Butler math telling me that's an average of five guys a year on the All Star team. And I started jotting analyst today for this particular topic. Just reds All star moments. I remember I have jotted down obscure Red's all stars like guys, either. Oh, that's right. He wasn't all star with the Reds. I've got the unexpected. All stars with the Reds have got the weird All Star game. I've got the all star with the Reds, who didn't pitch for the rage that pitch with another team. I just kind of jotted down and then started digging through stats and box scores and stuff and came up with Get two pages of Reds in the All Star game. Like the one that's always fascinated me was 98 I know it. Don't bring it up Jeff Shaw. Jeff Shaw made the All Star Game and was pitching for the Reds. But on July the fourth of 1998 that season, having already been named to the All Star team was traded to the Dodgers. He was traded to the Dodgers the Saturday before the All Star game. So the first time that Jeff Shaw pitched for the Dodgers. Was in the All Star game. And the rabbit. All this was shot signed A three year deal was a hometown discount was three years about eight million at the time, and he gave a hometown discount. He was goingto you know, he was going to commute from Washington Courthouse in his home every day. Wanted to stick around. Be a red kind of had a handshake deal with Jim Boden. You know, let's get the deal done, and Jim kind of sugars and I'm not going to trade you. And then in the middle of a game against the Cardinals just before the All Star game, Bernie Stowe comes and says in the middle of the game, you gotta call. And it was Boden and Boden told him in the middle of a game against the Cardinals. He had traded him. To the Dodgers for Paul Konerko and Dennis Reyes. Shaul was ticked. And so he wound up pack it up. Joining the Dodgers go to the All Star Game. Three days later pitched in the All Star Game in any a chorus field as a Los Angeles Dodger. Having been named the All Star team as red in his agent, his agent, they find Joe Bic. Had actually asked Major League baseball to allow him to represent the Reds in the All Star game in baseball, said it's not happening. Denied. In one of the quirkiest quirkier Gorky s things I think of when I think of the Reds in an all Star game memories over the years, named as a red traded and pitched the very next time for the Dodgers in the All Star game, who can forget in what? Just three years ago? Zack Cozart was named to the All Star team and Joey Votto gave him a donkey. We have any updates on the donkey that Zach still did? He did He farm it out to somebody else's it on on a farm someplace else. But Zack Cozart got a donkey when he made the All Star team courtesy of Joey Votto. Of course, this is the anniversary of the single greatest Red's All Star moment in franchise history. It was 50 years ago tonight that Pete Rose at Riverfront Stadium. Barely three weeks old, the state he was Most of the 70 All Star game President Richard Nixon on hand. It was a classic and Pete barrels around third of a hit from what Jim Hickman Amos Otis I if I remember correctly comes up throwing and Pete blows up Ray Fosse at the plate and ex trainings and win the game, the most iconic moment arguably an All Star game history. Certainly the Reds most iconic All Star game history, but that she's kind of the stream of consciousness that I just started jotting down things about the Reds. An All Star Games that I thought maybe we could do a topic on that at 5137491 7800 The Big one or Pounds 700 on Team 50 to read selections in the decade of the seventies. I'll give you an unexpected No, I'll give you an obscure red's All star..

"But what Farhan Zaidi did yesterday was huge this trade with the angels you're gonna end up hearing all about Zack Cozart reason you're gonna hear about Zack Cozart is his somebody who actually has a major league track record he actually has some stats on baseball reference you may have heard of and you may have seen him play a game or two and so the headline hits all over the place the giants have acquired Zack Cozart from the angels well what they give up nothing either money or player to be named we're not sure now I joked about the angels last night because I very much believe that this trade was in order to clear money for Gerrit Cole hours later they didn't get a I did say one copy out last night well maybe maybe that money is being saved for Anthony Rendon own as well and maybe in a few hours or a few minutes maybe or hear something on and you'll know why the angels did what they did but I understand the chain link fence that is being created here how each move is connected to the next by farms ID you trademark molasses you non tender Kevin Pelor and fans go well what we we do it we doing non tender income Pelor that it creates an an an incredible amount of financial flexibility and then when there's another team out there either because all gosh we want it to be read down or up against luxury tax line that is simply picks up the phone hi I angels Hey he do it yeah see word a position to help you out here I I I heard that you're a in a little bit of a financial bind I thought maybe a I thought maybe we could cure your ills what's the contract maybe you'd like to get rid of well how far on Jeez this Zack Cozart it one twenty four last year and he's been hurt two years in a row it's real drain honest twelve million Bucks like man we could really use get out from underneath that cool send me your first round draft pick and it's done yeah but but I don't know I said send me the first round draft pick and then it's done I didn't say we're gonna sit here negotiator said guidon send me the number one pick in your draft just six months ago and once you do that he got your twelve million Bucks if it's done did you notice something else and I thought this was a fascinating conversation with regard to the giants farm system so this guy the giants were actually after his name is will Wilson he's a middle infielder with power Hey I'm will was the number four prospect in the angel system already only been there for a few months number four prospect in the angel system he immediately gets sent over the giants where he is the number ten prospects in their system and I thought to myself huh huh really remember when the giants farm system you have heard it how long did down you're in into your head for the last I don't know how many years three four years the giants farm system is depleted it's awful there's nothing there well then the angels fourth best prospect is the giants tenth best prospect he was drafted fifteenth overall barely cracked the top ten now far Han did that he did that in a year he built this farm system from all fall to getting to a point where it's starting to load up with young talent and this is how you do it it's not by giving somebody nine years and three hundred twenty four million dollars the Dodgers don't do that they didn't do that I have a look at their payroll the reason the Dodgers lineup one through eight just keeps coming out you all my gosh there's another twenty five year old with thirty bombs they get him out here comes another one how do you do that you have a farm system that just keeps coming and it won't quit that's what Farrakhan helped build with the Dodgers is exactly what he's doing right now with the giants so this may feel odd I have complete faith in it and I can't wait to dive in and have a further conversation with general manager Scott Harris alongside far on he's gonna join us live coming up next on the sports later about giant hot stove league show home of orange and black baseball KNBR one oh four five nine six sports leader it may not be stomach issues for me it's intense gas or pain or diarrhea sometimes all at once over and over I spent years with the symptoms but could never figure it out no matter what I did they never went away so I decided to break it down for my doctor and get really specific about my symptoms we discovered that exocrine pancreatic insufficiency or E. "Did in the Cincinnati ball fan art was exciting to to all of us and specifically you know brought back a slider but he really started excuse fastball and I talked the strike zone and just had success that was and and the other thing I thought stand stood out was how much good positive feedback you got from other people in the industry one week we did some work on in and learn about not just talent but his character and what he's gonna bring to the clubhouse so it sounds to me like the view him in the way they viewed for Pomerantz but that the hang up I have with that comparison I do believe you can move Kevin Gausman same situation that we talked about with Pomeranz last year the difference is the Palmer in signing doesn't hurt you at all because it's only one point five million or whatever they gave a couple million Bucks with incentives not millions a little higher right but maybe you believe a little bit more in but again don't forget the true proper has turned into worries you're the boss he was able to move that peace he was able to move a contract in mark blanks and you're not his hamstring anymore now when you get funky with the with the the contracts here is whether or not you can move some of these guys and I do wonder about that when we talk about him taken on Farrakhan I'm again I mention this yesterday Bagley asked him are you do you have financial flexibility to take on more bad contracts like they did with Zack Cozart Florence and I don't think we're done that's what intrigued me that's sort of excited because generally you want to get rid of bad contracts but if you're taking on bad contracts in order to take on some good prospects like they did with a first rounder and will Wilson yesterday from the angels I'm on board with that I'm on board especially with expiring contracts because you gotta figure the way this is going to play out at least for for the guys who are movable Jeff so Marcia a limited trade peace rally limited no trade clause Brandon belt can name like ten teams a year that he cannot be traded to I Brandon Crawford has a full no trade clause buster Posey a full no trade clause beyond those guys everyone else is fair game whether or not they can move them whether or not you can swap some of those contracts to get somebody else in here could be intriguing but we've already seen this happen before on ones would not be shocked to see it happen again more from Gabe Kapler here this one more on Zack Cozart why'd you go out yeah this guy a good defender a guy who I had a conversation with them five minutes ago or so right before I did a previous interview and I think every player wants to show that they're they're healthy and they want to show that when they are healthy they can be productive and are capable of of doing great things I'm always happy to be back in the National League I think he appreciates that style play I think you just anxious to prove that he has a lot of good baseball left in a man and what I I share with them is I'm anxious to see it indeed there was some to prove to you take a player who's by the way the thing about that because I know he's making a chunk of change to in the twelve million dollars I same sort of thing as far as versatility goes he's left handed is a right handed that can play the left side of the infield shortstop and third base he does have some poppies trying to re have that shoulder maybe end up with a Stephen vote situation like you're Laster guy who can play multiple positions for you on the infield they do need some depth at second base as well so maybe maybe he's a guy that you throw out there and if you're ready to if he retains this forty man roster spot but again I'm not willing to look at anybody on the roster and say that case your opening day or that does your may first or June first of July first because it's all about versatility on this roster if you can help to see how many guys last year what is this season going Girardeau Pareh you gave us a larger guys in the last month two months right they were they were shipped out of town and then and then you had drug apart and help them that's what a World Series there's that anyway we have more to get into from Gabe Kapler I know people are sort of polarized by but this is the guy you got to hear what his thoughts are on this roster and he's gonna talk specifically when we return about guys were already under contract to Brandon Crawford's the belts the the buster Posey deal as well as Marie should upon how he sees this whole thing ironing out when the season gets go itself we'll talk more will check in on your text four one five eight we can be are you want to check it on the phone line and a lot of people reacting to some of these moves we can talk about I love I'm optimistic I like the idea for how soon we could take on some bad deals and I'm intrigued by the idea of taking on a real bad one I'm looking around the red Sox won a they want to unload some payroll David prices out there making thirty million dollars a year he's got three years left on that deal but if they throw in like an Andrew benintendi if they'll give you a twenty five year old team control for the next three years is gonna hit twenty eight home runs is gonna play gold glove caliber defense at all three outfield positions that's something that that greatly greatly intrigues me build for the future as well as trying to make the team interesting enough to follow in twenty twenty that's what I'm all about plenty more coming up it's a Wednesday morning in the leadoff spot on the sports leader the.

"Required out will will soon who's a twenty nineteen first round draft pick number fifteen overall from the the LA angels of Anaheim do we still have that tag Dave is it still like L. H. A. eight I believe so yeah there's a lot of aids down there yes okay so the the the deal was for for wil Wilson service guy young infield prospect at NC state twenty two year old kid whose I need it was a first rounder in last year's twenty nineteen rafter this year's twenty nineteen graph of the giants of the number ten pick in this draft into color bishop forums I use it after they acquired him yesterday will will soon that is they tear that they were high on him in last year's rafting considered taking him at number ten A. instead went with hunter bishop and a and now they've got two of the top fifteen picks from from this twenty nineteen draft class so bolstering via the system just a little bit in doing that they had to take on a bad contract and I think we're going to see a little bit more of this and we'll talk about that in just a minute but if required Zack Cozart who's an infielder shortstop third baseman also from the angels formally a Cincinnati Reds he was an all star one point twenty home runs once in a season and he's coming off a shoulder injury I think he's happy to be back in the National League everybody saying he was more comfortable playing baseball in the M. L. which is it's funny because when I was a kid I feel like that was a bigger thing going ale to an old was a gal these guys were just and players and ale players was interleague play in the crossover happens I know you see a bunch of these teams all the time guys change teams so frequently that I know they're still two different leagues and you don't see everybody all the time whenever Tyler Austin last year for the giants came over big Mongo looking dude played some left in first basin for the first two months it was like he is again seen any of these guys like none of the pictures he was facing or duty had seen before so I imagine for a guy's exact clothes are coming off an injury he's looking to bounce back and who knows if he's gonna be on the roster last year that's what I was getting at is he's in after one season four rounds ID you got to know that we do you acquire a player he may be here for a day he may be here for less than a day toss him off yeah I know a lot of people don't like that the revolving door players but he's got to get his system in place I and get guys that that fit this this plan for him and that's versatility its depth and versatility is where they've got to go as well as talent development so those are the two position players that were added to the organization Gabe Kapler did talk about how he they're here right now out of rehab for hugs I to a to rehab Zack Cozart foreign said the same thing we're trying to get him back to being able to play Major League Baseball so who knows if this means they hold on to him and that twelve million dollars but it seems more and more likely to me that the reason you didn't keep Kevin poll are now is that you're planning on taking on some bad contracts in order to take on some good young talent like they just did with the angel so if you're freed up that nine million or ten million or eleven million from Kevin Pelor to take on a few more bad deals so that you can add some young talent at least it's a plan you don't have to agree with that right now you can say well let's wait and see how it plays out but it's a plant and I'm okay with that plan the other dealer they made yesterday was for K. seven Dawson opened a little bit funkier lot of people yesterday what we're saying on Twitter that this is very much like to drew Pomeranz you'll give Kevin Gosper right handed pitcher I he picks for a long time as it was at Baltimore's where he came up he's a former first rounder had nearly over five though last year as a member of the Cincinnati Reds tough ball park depiction of course great American ball park it's a band box I believe not been it was the worst season of his career so you think that by and low was something that you could do one of nine million dollars so for one year not extremely low deal I mean that's that's for a guy who's going to be a five or maybe a six starter immediately same hill initially locked into the to the rotation at least to start the season but we'll see of course our spring training in the rest of this roster shakes out so that's something to monitor but people are talking about this like it's a drew Pomeranz deal the difference in that is that the the drew Palmer in situations that you paid him like a million and a half and it was all incentives so if you started putting together a little bit like he did at the end of last season the end of the first half for near the trade deadline the flip them they turn that interest you to bond you were able to get the ball back for your Palmer and so maybe if Kevin Johnson adds a little value to his his ledger here in the first part of the season you could see him moved again at the trade deadline all stuff you can monitor but seems to me like every far on play has got a counter step or a second or third or fourth plan beyond I don't think you can look at anyone moving say this is what this movie is just sign this guy he's your left fielder just not where baseball is anymore you're not necessarily saying this is our acquisition and he's here for the next decade playing this position you're looking for versatility in guys who can move around the infield give you a little bit of a of a different look day in and day out so we're gonna keep talking about this but it asked about whether or not the giants would continue to take on bad contracts or if they had financial flexibility to do so Farrakhan said yesterday I don't think we're done which is interesting you got to start thinking about the names that are out there David price's name was been floated around an awful lot he's got three years left on a deal in Boston and I know that could have made that me at aspen like you may force all bunch of moans and groans and say no no this guys making thirty plus million a year for the next three years but if you took on David price and it meant getting like Andrew benintendi from Boston I think you have to legitimately consider whether or not that was an option and if that is the option did not sign in Madison Bumgarner at whatever price that he's looking at twenty plus million twenty five million out may not be the worst idea ever if it means landing a guy who's who's been in the majors is get twenty home run power year in and year out thirty double power a guy who was a a first round draft pick a handful of years ago I invented to any any still just twenty five years old under team control for a couple more years something to consider some I don't think they're done chided for one of the more active teams in the first couple of days here will keep paying attention to what's going on brigade Kapler sound from yesterday he went in depth for the for first time really talking about the roster individual players he's met with some of these players you talked about buster Posey and Brandon belt and and Brandon Crawford in review to bond and and login weapon Tyler BT Gabe Kapler the manager man he's gonna be talking about these guys is going to be making decisions on these guys gonna start to get the feel for what he thinks of this roster as currently constructed so we'll get into some more this trade stuff we'll talk about this a good baseball day to talk about as you sort of I down day from what's going on in the NFL Wednesday course sort of a quiet day forty Niners back at practice today a couple of moves on the roster will talk about those as well marquise Goodwin done for the season so we'll discuss which moves can come up from the practice water who may be added to the roster after the marquise Goodwin a transaction to move him the I. R. with the injury so we'll talk more about that but first did kapple reaction to these trades and acquisitions yesterday Gerrit Cole is a Yankee more baseball talk coming up it's a Wednesday morning date update in the leadoff spot on the sports leader the leadoff spot with Adam Copeland on KNBR one oh four five and six eighty three sports leader with Dr Sanjay Gupta but my three daughters their circadian rhythms couldn't be more different than mine I'm Dr Sanjay Gupta CNN's chief medical correspondent most kids are programmed to not really get tired until later at night which means our bodies want to sleep later in the morning this is problematic of course because four out of five public middle schools and high schools in the.

"Smarter than everybody at the winter meetings did you notice what he pulled off to the there a call goes to the Yankees you didn't notice you didn't like I did immediately thank why how far Han she you genius zero you didn't think that that's what I thought and here's why I knew Gerrit Cole was going to be Yankee or I fell to the lease to cancer and knew it there are exceptions but do you realize how often the big time free agents just end up simply taking the biggest dollar amount it's usually that simple with there's so much talk about these guys and the NBA is a little different the NBA other than your bird rights the other teams can all offer you the exact same amount so in those cases you are actually looking at geographies situation in Fayette teammates all of that but if you're gonna go to football for going to going to baseball it really just comes down to who offers you the most money unless there is some thing of an extenuating circumstance in there but how often over the last six months have we heard all Gerrit Cole are he loves the west coast he wants to go to the west coast he grew up with angel fan his brother in law is a San Francisco Giants shortstop he likes that situation too but he's just comfortable out west and there's some good hitter's parks I'm sorry good pitchers parks out there Gary Cole is definitely going to be in California and even the Yankees negotiations early on that was what they kept beating to reporters yeah we're we're gonna give it everything we've got but we really feel like he may end up taking the angels of the Dodgers they're called the Yankee tonight nine years three hundred twenty four million dollars your Scott Morris quiet you take the cash it's all about the money for this was no surprise this was expected but don't miss the hidden resolved today far Han's ID you are next level here's my belief and ate away came BR absolutely if you want to get in on this because man farms ID has been of for some strange reason in my opinion a controversial figure a lot of people on both sides of the fence here with Farhan Zaidi five years from now it is my believe we're going to be discussing where to put the farmhands ID statue at the mission rock development that is my belief I'm not kidding I'm not making it up he's that good did you see what he did today he made a trade with the angels coincidently and the name is gonna see on internet searches or the name you may even see when the reports come down is that the the giants acquired infielder Zack Cozart that's the name many of you have heard before he's been the bags for a while everyone immediately Zack Cozart okay let's run a baseball reference dot com what's that because our been doing because he's hurt a lot but what's he been doing wait a minute he hit one twenty four last year what the heck is IT doing what we wanted infielder who at one twenty four last year spoiler alert they don't there's nothing to do with Zack Cozart it has to do with the other guy his name is well Wilson he's gonna be the throwin if you ask people because they've not heard of him before he was the fifteenth overall selection in the draft just six months ago how often do you see teams do that draft somebody in the first round and six months later they're just like here you take him you know the giants gave up for this guy absolutely nothing there might be a player to be named later when's that ever hurt or it may just be cash a simple financial move made possible by mark lowlands in being a brave by Kevin poll are not being a giant Zaidi has ultimate financial flexibility and he just turned it into the fifteenth overall pick in the draft and gave up nothing forum now why on earth with the angels do that just to save a little money I think they save twelve or thirteen million Bucks do you know what that is for Major League Baseball team that's a week's worth of popcorn why would the angels do that I have an idea clearing salary for a guy they just didn't get works far Han pulled a fast one and he had to do it today because if you didn't do it today deals off the table tomorrow I'll give one dot dot dot cabbie out maybe the angels get Anthony ran down maybe they use that money for that I have my doubts but it's possible definitely possible that's the name they're going to quote unquote shift their attention to but I'd be surprised if rundown ends up there if so then all's fair in love and war but if not far on just called the Los Angeles or Anaheim angels of wherever you want to call them and they made a blank and for absolutely nothing he took the fifteenth pick in the draft the giants now have two of the top fifteen picks in last year's draft in their farm system that is how he does it that's how he does it and while that won't excite you today when you look at the Dodgers new go my gosh does their farm system ever stop why do they keep bringing up young studs this is how you do it this is how he's always done it and he's a genius and it's never failed not once not ever not for a year not with India an American League team not with the National League team and it's not going to fail with this team you're going to love them yeah just gotta let him do what he does and by the way I don't think they're done fact I know they're not done because they publicly stated what I've done and teams don't publicly state stuff like that and then not follow through I still believe that next castallanos is going to be a giant by the end of next week I really do I could be wrong but I think that's trending in a really good direction now with all that said I'm I want to take your calls next it away came BR Hey I'm the Gerrit Cole signing to the Yankees does present one free agent problem for the giants and it's not a small one and we'll get into that coming up next Scott all slower in fifteen minutes.

"Today at three fifteen PM the sports half past headlines from for Huns ID said he expected the giants the busy this week in San Diego at the M. L. B. winter meetings and the giants have made a trade today they've traded the player to be named later or cash to Tommy's Ellie angels for Zack Cozart Cozart veteran infielder it one twenty four ninety seven at bats in twenty nineteen is battle shoulder problems the last couple years first boat she is managing once again that's right bridge boat she's gonna manage the French national team in the WBC which takes place the spring giants are gonna be with Madison Bumgarner as representatives in San Diego this week at the winter meetings also baseball notes Indians lists listening to offers for Corey Kluber and Adam Jones may opt to sign to play in Japan Ken Rosenthal's reporting that one major league team views the giants as the clear front runners to sign Nick castallanos war years of course losers last night as a call to five and twenty one ten one oh to the final Golden State back in action Wednesday night at the chase center against the New York knickerbockers was your have tested once now back to Mr T. Krueger and rod be teaching on KNBR one oh four five and six eighty sports leader audible Kerry clothing will join us at three o'clock because he's got to do some actual reporting on the giants Zack Cozart deal Terry Crowley covers the giants for the San Jose mercury news he will join us F. three of the clock it just gives us more quality time with each other player how you feel pretty pretty pretty free pretty loose pretty all over the place right now alright feel pretty good about this Cozart move tell me what you think you saw him play for your squad he's thirty four the tired and too much got to a quick start when he first got there and then didn't do a whole lot we're gonna play second form Fletcher did a better job when he had his chance so he played third a lot I was kind of hoping that maybe they got rid of him now try to get Donaldson I don't think many a player on the use of where the angels thought they were getting when they got him because he he was coming off your in Cincinnati where he twenty four home runs and it almost three hundred and the angels problem in twenty eighteen to nineteen and fifty eight games I got her and then came back the next year shoulder problems again hit one twenty four so his career looks like it's Dan and his last thread his injury was it a shoulder or something along those lines I think so but so hard shoulder EMB at shortstop third baseman if that's his throwing shoulder I mean I'm just yeah I don't know it here but if that's that's a sore shoulder that's why more a second base by the pleasure is up for the for the Reds when he was with the red so early can play all the infield position that it's like I said I don't see a whole lot of because he got her many been her most of time is there clear that salary cap for Gerrit Cole baby well there's a there are number nine or whatever was the yanks are solely of trying to move J. hap because they want to clear you know sour room for for Kerr colon people say well what are you putting clear sour room there's a cap in baseball there's no cap but there's the they've instituted these luxury tax thresholds they get more more punitive if you're in the second and the third level and so teams are willing to do anything I've read that the Yankees may actually throw a good prospect in that the red Sox may do the same trade a veteran player in the big contract and throw a good prospect to some team willing to take on that money just to avoid the huge you know penalties are being in that second and third tier the luxury yeah it's not a cat but it might as well be in good teams are trying to get below you know well you know it's the beer when the Yankees and red Sox or just like to say that either like you know when we're doing the Yankees are running from something that would be very easily be solved by just throwing more money yeah but Hey back to what I said about analytics it's not all analytics but under that umbrella of analytics that's baseball they're giving George Amberley cared about us our top twenty if he would care I don't care okay with this means Hallahan care but George sure as hell will because the game's changed because all the GM's now are conscious of that and it's all about how much it costs to get me a win that's what it is how much I paid to get wins that's why it's wins above replacement how many runs you save in the field of any Rosie caught those thing about castallanos city was a minus nine defense of war they said he got better with the cubs I don't know how it was with the cubs ordered or the Tigers to be honest with you but it's they just plugged into a computer how many rounds did you save us in the field of major cost us many run should you make us ABAP okay how much we spending per when all right you cost too much your content is eighty thousand a win it should be forty two thousand one if it whatever the whatever the calculus is but that's the way they do it now in this way just what if you like the player does he like the player at price price some of the giants like Kevin pull our active trader form they made him the Willie mak wards of the guys in the room thought he was great the organization loved them they don't love my ten million element to the limit for that I'm at five they don't love meant six wait eight and they sure as hell below Matane everybody has a price would assume the giants still love Madison Bumgarner at twenty five million a year I'll be not touch text message to tell me have a big a big job breaker going are something that is working with the damages on the Mike off is right I'm a sucker has always been nice to see that about Larry all he has to see you in the my bed propose the bad I have anybody make about to head to try to get on the news a
