"It's been open so it's kind of a bittersweet You Know Businessweek Day that we we recognize ten years of Dover but we were able to also in addition to the Fisher House that we built there we were. We were able to build they. Don Denominational Spiritual Center where family could go and pray or meditate in their own way and you know to me not having that at Dover when families were allowed to go and and witness you know their loved one coming home was was just travesty. So you know we're able to do that. And and our commitment you know keeps going on To this day and we'll we'll continue well into the future as long as there's a need while the Fisher fabric does wonderful things and I. I can't I don't know if you know me and your Uncle Zachary Fisher under H W Bush help build a chapel at Camp David Camp. David never had a chapel before and in nineteen eighty nine nineteen ninety was ninety one something like that. We built the chapel at Camp. David and it was a wonderful thing that we did talk about chapels and we talk about religion yesterday on Saturday. President trump announced that you know religious freedom and at all the churches should open and meet if we have super walk. It's open and if we have Liquor Stores Open. Why not opened up the churches as long as they take the right precautions? Where their masks and be able to have people pray and? I commend the president for doing that. Because people should have religious freedom. They should be able to do that. Well you know. Cows one of the learned in Iraq. It was a young soldier who came to me and we were talking about prayer and we were praying together Here I am at Iraq Frank With Rain Marina. He says to me. Hey Tony I doubt if there are too many atheists in the Fox hole today and so prairies important for as important to every single synagogues and mosques and and and churches and and Protestant and Catholics. We all have to pray because prayer is a power that without doubt has proven itself over the world's time from biblical times to now over pandemic prayers very important rifle or gone or weapon against this terrible terrible terrible virus and We all the time time to pray and that was wonderful at candy. Your your brother Bruce mostly was on before and He he does wonderful things at cushman and Wakefield and Cushman and Wakefield pixes hired eight hundred veterans for his company. Yeah Bruce has been a leader. It's a it's a real pleasure for me to to actually be the CO chairman of the intrepid with Bruce. He's been a basically a part of the family for many many years. Now and you know we've got this this one thing in common. Which is you know our love of the military our love of military families. The most important thing. I think that we need to remember. Is that behind? Every man and woman that wears a uniform is a family and that makes sacrifices and bears burdens that the average American has no concept of and it's up to us the people that are aware of it the people that that are in the trenches. If you will you know helping our veterans helping our are active servicemen and women and remind people that that these families you know need help sometimes too and you know when a loved one is in the hospital. You know. It's up to Austin to make sure that these families are taking care of these are America's families now and when they give the ultimate sacrifice store on the family loses a loved one in line It's up to us to remember. What the sacrifices that have been made on our behalf and that is what this weekend is about not about barbecues not about the about three day weekends and and no zoom calls this weekend but But most importantly About wreck remembering those who have paid the ultimate price for freedom and the reason we could have those barbecues reason. We can have a dinner with our friends and our families is because the sacrifices people have made on behalf of our country at Jeff. How Long Jeff Cathy? How long have you been Bankamerica about a dozen years? I finished up a twenty nine year career in the navy and up in Washington. Dc actually work for secretary Fran Harvey for a little bit who was so instrumental in building the CFI out in San Antonio and and So it's just It's just been a tremendous Company joined Reich. You know when Recessionary period head and really unemployment for the veterans was quite high which with this pandemic is Gotten up there again up in double digits. So as Kim said you know they're they're a great way to support. The troops is for those coming back. Who Want to enter the workforce and join their communities and they done They're good service and an honorable way for the country and what better way to improve their financial lives and employees them properly and in really appreciate what they've done and experience that they bring and they I mean they can run big that they've got the talent they got their work ethic that got the attitude and that's why we percent. Jeff thank you for everything you do with bank America and with Brian Moynihan and Dick's of a minute convert duty for of veterans and about Bank of America. God bless America and Tony. "WM AL dot com. Auto going to support the work run by this man, Ken fisheries, the chairman and CEO of the Fisher house foundation. And it was his great uncle Zachary. Fisher got this all started Ken. We're really happy to talk to you this morning. Thank you for joining us. Thanks for having me. Basin. Just an amazing thing. Yeah. Thank you, sir. One of the one of the keys that I love asking the people who work for the Fisher house is about the stories that have touched them and continue to sustain them. Tell us about you know, some of the people who the Fisher house is helping. Well, these are the families primarily of these men and women who have given so much this nation is by the week that says the post nine eleven generation, but even the generation before I just just amazing amazing people. They wanted to things that we have learned. And I think quite a big role in bringing out the point of the military family. Now, the family serves the entire family service. And you know, the the burdens that they carry and Fisher house is privilege to be able to play the role that we do. In supporting these men and women. Let's see here. Kennedy with us still. Yes, we're here. Okay. Go ahead. It's just an amazing thing. The play the role that we do in these families. Yeah. That they they make sacrifices and bear burdens that the the average American is only now really becoming. And it's just a privilege for us to play the role that we do. Every day in in in eighty these families can tell us about some of the specialized houses, we spoke with someone who stayed at the Dover air force Fisher house for the house in the house for the fallen. We know what the Bethesda Walter Reed Fisher houses. There's a home there four who for the people who were there for traumatic brain injury. And actually, those those people who are being treated the patient state in the Fisher house. They don't stay in a traditional hospital room. They stay in the Fisher house are there. Other Fisher homes that are specialized for different different categories. Yeah. That's a great coffee. Dover was very special. We were made aware of that. I was actually walking through a drugstore one day and got a phone call from. General. Who made me aware of of the fact that there was no lodging for families on the base at Dover. So that was something we built that house at about six months. I think. The Bethesda their special too because of NATO. The center for excellence there that that's playing such a big role in in treating post traumatic stress Matic brain injury. I think the Fisher houses that we built at all the level one trauma centers around the country there. They handle difficult cases. The the real traumatic brain injury. And the effects that it has the devastating effects. It hasn't post traumatic. The spinal cord injuries. You know, the terrible wars that that the post nine eleven. You know? So those are very special homes because of the role that they play in supporting these TATA's drastically wounded men and women with both the seen and the unseen wounds of war. And that's that's really important. When one of the things we learned Vincent. I when we went to the Bethesda Fisher homes is is the house that you do have their for the post traumatic stress disorder. The patients who are being treated for that who do live in that home. It's amazing the detail you go to and this is something that people should know. This is there's a lot of thought that goes into this down to the decor. You have people who specialize in this who will come in. And there's a painting on the wall, and they'll change the painting because of the depiction of it, and knowing who is going to be staying in this home, and I just found that so fascinating that every little detail is thought about planned out. Well, you know, if you go to, but they're states, actually, a very. Kind of a history of Fisher house. If you walk in, you know, if you look to your left, you'll see the first Fisher house that was ever built. And then the lead. But there's though you're bigger warrants for sixteen thousand original has five. And it's right there. It's almost like a Fisher home. But this is what the things that. We're very proud of that we have learned so much in the twenty seven years in which we've been building these houses that we've we've taken great pains to make sure that the families get the best that we could give them. Yeah. We don't we use the best materials that we can. We don't waste. So when we get these. A lot of times gifts in kind or what have you and Jackson? Speeches allows us to help get these families what they deserve. And they're always so thrilled when they walk into the homes. Because they're look around. And they were staying well, Ken Fisher. You are doing such good work taking care of these families. Thank you. And we're glad we can be even a small part of it this morning. That was Ken fisheries, the chairman and CEO of the Fisher house foundation. Really appreciate having him on..

But he's. He susceptible to infections dogs. He's got three horses. Is the therapy voice. That's how he learned to walk again. So he's got a good life there. But when you have to go long term into a hospital for any kind of treatment, especially with with his injury. I wouldn't let anybody touch him. But. Bethesda Walter Reed, which used to be the national Naval Medical center. When I started all the surgeons here, are you walk down the hallway. Everybody knows who joshes spend thirteen years. Josh. Since july. This is really a good thing for families. Well, when I stay and I wouldn't leave him alone. What would you do without this? I can crock here. Oh, I guess the commanding general's getting a new place to live and come to find out. Now, that's gonna be the Fisher house while the second question is what is a Fisher house, and nobody could really tell me so I called and at that point there were just a couple of Fisher houses inoperational, and they said, well, this is a place where families can stay and and when somebody comes to the hospital. And they said Fisher house foundation like the name. And I changed the name of my local groups so as not to confuse the public with with what he was trying to do nationally. And through that I learned there was going to be a national program to support Fisher houses. I. I wanted to be a part of it. And so I've had that now for twenty four years. The Fisher family's an amazing group of people starting with Zachary Fisher who when he learned there was a need. I went to the chief of naval operations, Admiral Karl trust. And said, you know, I would like to do more for the military. What can I do that would be a blessing just to the navy, but all the services and being a good leader Admiral tros went to his wife and said Honey guy asked me what we need to do that would be a blessing. What do you think? And she remembered a time when she saw a helicopter coming into the fast, and they took the patient out of the helicopter, and then the family members jumped out carrying a couple of suitcases thought in Washington DC, where are these people get a stay, and it had always been on our heart. She'd been working understand what the wives club. And they were looking for a house to buy in the neighborhood. They told Zack they needed something. Like around McDonald house. "Whole Fisher house thing. I, you know, I think I understand it. But I'm afraid to go down that road. It's it you're providing housing for veterans and their families that have to travel to receive their services from veteran's hospitals is that the nutshell that is correct any of these veterans and their respective families who live outside of a fifty mile radius of any veterans medical center medical center. When they come in to receive their treatment whether for combat wounds or service connected disabilities. They're basically at the mercy of the economy, they they have to pay out of pocket expenses for lodging for food. And currently Michigan doesn't have a single fisherhouse. A Fisher house would basically correct that a Fisher house very similar to a Ronald McDonald house right would be a place of respite where they could house lodge their families for temporary period of time while they receive much needed treatment at the respect VA medical center and everything would be free net includes round trip transportation from the from the Fisher house to the the medical center. And currently Michigan doesn't have a single Fisher house where we if we look at our neighbor to the south, Ohio. They have four soon to have five and there's approximately seventy five other Fisher houses around the United States right now. So I'm a member of the board of what they call Motorcity veterans village and motor city veterans village coordinates very closely with Fisher house, Michigan. Which is basically working on eight and our first Fisher house over an Ann Arbor co located with Ann Arbor veterans medical center. And they're supposed to break ground in the spring of twenty nineteen. We're hoping that we can break ground for the Detroit fisherhouse not too long after that. And this is all privately funding, right? That's correct. You know as much as we'd we'd like to depend on government funds. You can't do that in this day and age this. This is something that Fisher house. Actually, we're paying it forward whereby the Fisher house foundation out of Maryland, they're going to construct this thing, rain or shine. But what we do is raise the funds and pay it forward. So other Fisher houses can be built as well. And this was basically a a labor of love for Zachary Fisher Zachary Fisher, never ever served in uniform, but he felt so strongly about Kerry for our men and women veterans that he took it upon himself. He was successful in his own right as a business person. And he and his family took it upon themselves to start funding these Fisher house. And so consequently there is a template for each fisherhouse. They adhere strictly to these. Templates? There are certain acreages requirements that have to be mad, obviously, the the interior design the exterior elevation, etc. All that is planned out to the degree. And so we're just happy to be a part of this. I got involved in this thing some time ago by basically Doug, MacDonald, US navy retired and his lovely wife. Kathy invited me to come on board. Coincidentally. I'm the president of the air force association. And michigan. And I represent something like seventeen hundred air force association members here in Michigan the national organization of ninety seven thousand strong and coincidentally air force associations wounded airman program. Also is officially endorsed this along with other major veterans service organizations such as American Legion. Disabled American veterans the navy league the association of the US army cetera et cetera. And so we're all working towards the same goal of establishing Fisher houses at each of the five VA medical centers of Michigan. I'm having clues Iron Mountain up in the UP. Saginaw battle creek certainly an Arbor, which I just mentioned, and then certainly Detroit. You know, it almost seems to me that that that responsibility is something that the Veterans Administration should be taking care of if if somebody lives one hundred and fifty miles away from a VA hospital. You would think that they would provide some sort of per diem or or accommodation for them when they come. But they don't provide anything like that. No, they'll they'll pay they'll pay some travel, you know, as far as mile against concerned, but as far as lodging and food that's really after the respective families, which is certainly not fair given the sacrifices that veterans have made. Right. And also, you know, not to belittle the VA, but as you and you're listening. Well, no, they have like the military have been under these are chain budget restrictions for decades. And they they can only do so much. And in fact, I'll tell you the VA if we turn the keys over to the VA, you know from. The VA is gonna take care of the Fisher houses. Let me put it that way. In other words, west the Fisher houses built it's a turnkey. Deal keys are turned over to respect the Veterans Administration medical center in that area. And then the Veterans Administration Bill that into their budget, and they basically take over ownership of that Fisher. Oh, okay. So that's a that's a really unique partnership. It really is. It really is. And I think the Veterans Administration wants to do the right thing. But again because of a lot of the arcane budget restrictions. Their hands are tied to the extent we want to try to extend our reach and and and try to accomplish something that they're not able to do. Are you familiar with with how many veterans there are that utilize the administration services medical services in Michigan? No, I'm not I don't have an exact number. And I probably wouldn't venture a point in time. I believe it's approaching at least a half million. The last time I checked on that. Sure. I just guessing at this point. Yeah. So what what can we do to support your cause and your effort here are there is there are there any fundraising opportunities that are upcoming or? Areas of support that you need or well, I know that, you know, veterans Christian fisherhouse Michigan on November fifth at five thirty pm over an Ann Arbor in the university of Michigan auditorium. They're having a stories of valor. And that is free to the public. If the public would like to go over, and and certainly sit in on some of these unique, and at heart wrenching stories of veterans from various conflicts wars, it's cetera as they tell their story that evening, and of course, you can donate. You can also you know, I mean. Donations of every imaginable amount. I certainly welcomed by motor Motorcity veterans village. We're we're working as I said before in concert was that what fisherhouse Michigan, but we're also focusing on getting a Fisher house here in Detroit and southeast Michigan because it's long overdue. Well, it sounds like the work never ends on this project. Absolutely. And and you know, you ask a few moments ago west what they can do is. Of course, donations are always appreciated, and we we received those warmly they can.
