Arctic air will blast much of US just before Christmas
"Get ready for an extra cold Christmas Arctic air will blast much of the U.S. just before the holiday. Forecasters are warning of treacherous holiday travel and life threatening cold for big parts of the nation. Below zero readings or likely an expected across the northern plains and portions of the upper Midwest, but even for locations down into the southeast, mid Atlantic temperatures dipping down into the single digits or teens. National weather service meteorologist Zach Taylor also says besides the Arctic blast, rain and snow are also in the forecast. Potential there for some heavy rainfall across the eastern U.S.. And on the colder side of the storm system, we're looking at a potential for a swath of locally heavy heavy snowfall somewhere across the Ohio valley and Great Lakes. It's like, you know, sometimes it's okay to be conservative and take the points and like, hey, defense. I trust you. You played really well. You bottled up Lamar Jackson in a way that's actually been pretty impressive to hold them under 30 points for the night. The numbers might bear itself out over time, but there has to be a deal aspect of this. If you don't have a field aspect of your players and your team, you're not a human being, what happened so we got to get back to stale at once at some point and figure out how we feel about that. Well, I don't think there's much to figure out. He should have punted it to my view. I mean, I don't care about that. I had a conversation, I guess, it doesn't matter. I don't have to include his name, but I had a conversation with really high level Theo a couple weeks ago. And I was just asking him what he what he learned in general about making decisions.

You know, Dan, when these teams get together for joint practices, it always sounds like a great idea and that first day, everyone's enthusiastic, it's great to be going against an opponent other than your teammate. But when it gets to the second day, frustration sets in. And, you know, the Bengals talked about at least Zach Taylor talked about the Super Bowl was behind them. No hard feelings, but I got to believe, you know, after two days of having to go against Aaron Donald and the rams going against the Bengals, tempers flare. And Aaron Donald was in the middle of what was happening, but he was not the only one. There was punches thrown. People kicking people shoving, fortunately, at least as far as I know, no one was hurt, but there were helmet swinging and it was quite a scene that led to the end of practice. Any indication if the rams will take any disciplinary action against Aaron Donald. No. I would be stunned if the rams could any kind of disciplinary thing. Sean mcvay talks about you need to protect teammates, you need to, you know, you need to stand up for yourself. They are not going to find a player that they just gave a massive extension too. That's a leader of their team. In some way, I'm sure McVeigh came away from that with a little bit of, I don't want to say pride, but I'm sure he walked away with my guy stood up for each other and even though his attitude is nothing to see here. We forgotten about it in 30 seconds. Like I said, I'd be stunned, if anything happened to Aaron Donald. "It's a tough line to walk. Do you think the league though overall has a officiating problem? Like, are you one of those people that's ready to truly call this a big issue? Yeah, I felt that way for years. I don't think, you know, it's funny to me with the officials. Through the first three quarters of that game, everybody, you know, on Twitter and the people and watching with the officials are staying out of it. I can't believe this. This is great. And then the officials insert themselves and everybody's like, I can't believe this happened. When you're spending the first 45 minute shocks that it's not happening. I want to go back to the coaching. You talked about the real quick. Yeah, Zach Taylor and a rough game. On top of that, can we stop pretending that McVeigh is some kind of innovator, some kind of new wage, whatever it is. He didn't coach great. He did not have a great game plan. And look, losing Beckham certainly hurt. But I just think overall I think overall, he was not great in that game. That is the play calling really until that last drive. Was incredibly uninspired. And again, I know they lost Beckham, but if McVeigh is this otherworldly coach, if he's supposedly the best coach in the league, which is what some people want you to believe, then he would with all that offensive talent, he would be able to overcome losing Odell Beckham instead of just constantly running the ball up the middle for a year and a half on every play. So ultimately he got the ring, he did. I'm not crowning. I said this after the Super Bowl in 2018. I'm not crowning Sean mcvay. I'm not crowning Sean mcvay. I still don't see what all of you people who are trying to convince me that he's special see. I got one. He had that one. I don't know if everybody figured it out. I don't know if he's necessarily the most special play collar that has ever walked this earth. I think a guy like Andy Reid's a better play caller than Sean mcvay is. But in terms of the structure of the way that they build their passing system in particular and then marry their passing system to their play action runs and their base runs, they have a very sound scheme. It's very complimentary and it's very difficult to defend because they have a lot of answers to things, right? It was bland borough The interception to t higgins it there was like no separation right and they got ta all they did take a shot earlier in the game ball. That was contested. Catch but t higgins is known as a contested catch guy. It was just a lot of good place from From a lot of good players but then those same players made at least one major miscue whether that was on defense or offense. And if we're focusing on zach taylor in the audience john just i guess i just have to say again your point year three communications. You shouldn't really be a problem getting yards getting points with the weapons that you have shouldn't really come at such a premium at this point. So let's compare week to week one. Because i don't think there was that big of difference in the overall plan in the skin scheme. The results were just better the bengals were penalised very often we to think they're penalize twice. They were very solid running. The football had like one hundred forty rushing yards on twenty or so carries the office still kind of land for a good part of that game like the punted. The ball verse three or four times is when they opened things up more towards the later part of the second half they like to. They like to capitalize on that. I think matt would like middle aged middlesex. Like last three minutes of the first half in the first three minutes of the second. That's when they started to get into urgency motive They threw the ball. Dietmar chase they started gets success on offense. They didn't really start. They didn't really have that urgency until they really forced to when burroughs the ball over and they really just had to start opening the building. The passing game up but it seems pretty clear this point that they don't want to expose borough that much on obvious passing situations and when he does drop back. It's in emptying. The ball is designed to get up quickly. And i understand the propensity or the the desire to facilitate the offense out of md. Because in theory it's supposed to negate a pass for second wind quickly by getting the ball out in giving your quarterback a ton of options to just. It's almost like an extension of the run game because the passing plays are designed to travel more than like five yards. So like if these quick plays that are supposed to just move the move Key out of second and third along situations or go keeping your quarterback out of obvious passing situations or he can get sacked. The problem is if defenses are expecting that and after one week of film. Bears had fresh tape to expect what was happening. And that's exactly what happened than they had the plan to stop it. And there is no counter from zack. Taylor so seems pretty obvious. At this point that they're still having constricted game plan to protect borough from getting hit more times than he's already going to get hit and it was just too late for them to carry. They didn't do anything until the fourth quarter and three biggest plays. The game came when they were down by multiple scores because the bears at that point like it was just it had to happen at some point right the bengals going to make some mistakes offense if they kept basically giving bears the bears. "About the direction this franchise is headed because you can't head into another year of Zach Taylor. If you're ending this season going, Whoa, I don't. I don't know. There has to be a sense that it has kicked in the corner has been turned and watch out a F C North because Joe Burrow and Zach Taylor's Bengals have arrived that maybe something I'm only going to be identified by. I am not going to be able To look at it on the statute does that am I in the neighborhood of something that makes sense? You're absolutely or and just kind of bridge off of that. For me. It is. I think at some point in the season we need to be like This is a good team. We're just one defensive end away or we're you know, we're like one or two players right now. You couldn't say the last couple years like Oh, my God. We need like three offensive lineman. We need some pass rushers. We this we that We know all these things. If we get to the point where we're like We're like one or two guys away from being Really good. I think that's a good place to be and also say this and I don't know how to exactly define this either. But I would love for Starting in November. This team this seem to still be in the conversation. How many times in the last couple years where it's October and working. We're talking draft picks. Yes, selfishly, Lance. Yes. When? In west November, I want to be like, Well, you know a few things Go right here. This team could maybe find its way in the conversation. That is a great point and all related to the Reds because the most often quoted line to me doing Reds. Extra innings of light has been. I agreed Baltimore, Kansas City, Cleveland that those are going to be tall task. Maybe some of them will be locked in the playoffs already. Reese a man, They just need one more piece because the reality is rock. We talked earlier about the turnover on this roster. There's 23 players on this roster who have never taken a snap for the Bengals. There's 40 players on this roster who have arrived since 2019 that means there, Zack guys in there, Zach. Coaches, guys. They've identified pieces they want. This is the equivalent of the old Bill. Purcell's quote Zach Taylor and his staff have been able to shop for the groceries. Now they're preparing the meal. They had better prepare. Prepare a damn good meal, because if these are all their guys and they don't win with them, there's going to be somebody else bringing in their own guys next. "The off season was busy but quiet. It compared to some of the franchises around this league and zach taylor had a couple of years to to help mold the team in his vision. They've spent money in free agency. It's time to go in football games. And and i guess my question for you wrote about urgency's taylor talked about urgency. Simplify it and we make it about a win total. What's the minimum. What's the minimum this year that avoids any talk of coaching changes. Hot seats. any of that stuff. Either zach or significant members of the coaching staff is so tough to do it. Because you know you gotta say minimum assuming jober oh played stays healthy and plays every game. I mean that's yes. I'm not gonna count game backup quarterback if he played seventeen games. That's where we're going with the s. I think you you gotta be passing that. You gotta be around or passing vegas total. I mean you i mean. Then you're you're pointing to you. Know you got a point back the you but two four seven and some big wins in them and you you need to be in that five hundred you need to be in that mixed to make it feel like what it should feel with that roster and if you have joe borough yes you should be winning a lot of one more game you can increase a win total by three. That's probably yeah absolutely you should. You should be in that in that puts you playing what important games in december of which you have a lot of good teams that you're gonna be playing in your house and probably if you're relevant there in front of some pre pack stadiums. Allin brought my name up but then also when when my grandfather reached out to to coach shannahan he said hey i got a grandson and if nothing else you know. He said hey. Well if he's like yours if you're like him we'll go and bring in and let him compete for a job but like the amount of just layers in the different connections that we have. It's it's pretty eerie and it sounds like I ask for those things from the niners too and they didn't say yes that kyle. What the hell not kidding. You know what's funny though. Peter is his kyle. He they had done such a good job in atlanta. And you know this has been publicized or whatever. But in a lot of instances you almost get punished for doing well in the playoffs nowadays. Sure you know. And it's like the further you go because of the way that it's kind of structured the last thing that the carousel almost well. Yeah it's crazy. Because like i actually got some advantages because we lost and basically a play in game our last regular season game and so when you get hired while kyle it was semantics where he kind of knew he was going to be the niners head coach. But you couldn't officially announce it and he's focused on winning a super bowl. Well in the meantime what are we doing. We're putting together a staff. We're doing some things you're getting a chance to get. you know. Access the coaches that are looking for jobs. And it's amazing how that kind of played out where we both went through it at the same time but you realize like the success that they had in atlanta when he's doing his thing it it actually forces you to kinda start You know a little bit behind everybody. I saw the same thing with. Zach taylor a couple years ago in cincinnati and it but but to kyle's credit you know san fran that was their guy. They knew they wanted him and and he knew exactly what he wanted to. And i think you see that thing come to life with the vision and and why the ball's men writing san fran. The whole process was miserable and tough. I mean i went into a very open heaven for interviews because i grew up around the head and watched my dad and i just i knew i was so adamant that i wanna take take the wrong job And i'm just so glad that i felt that way about san francisco and they felt that way about me But of nine. It's not like the other three teams offer me So san francisco one enough or if wanted to vote that way. I wanna to jail and who knows what happens next year. You know. so that's why it's a tough league and that's why a lot of people you know as soon as you get that opportunity sometimes you never wanna look back because at opportunity doesn't always come again but i also there's a very fine line. That opportunity comes in you're in a bad situation in a might only be one year just because they never get it again. So that's why. I watched guys goes to the same stuff i watched. My dad go through in a workout and i watched it not work out in washington. And that's some of the stuff. I've learned that. Have so much respect for coaches and people like my dad. People like bill check. People like sean but you gotta realize that they're also fortunate like did not. Everything's gonna play out that way always and you got to believe in yourself. You got to believe in the people around you but you can't just be obsessed with the results Yes all i think about is when a super bowl and trust me. I don't need to sit here and tell you how much east of me. But he also you can't make decisions chasing that 'cause it's a business isn't guaranteed as a team sport. The Bengal started mini camp this week on Tuesday and after day one, he said. Yep. Mini camps over vacation starts, and this was basically a transaction. Because he wanted full attendance at O. T s. Those quotas are not mandatory. He wanted his players to get to the 85% vaccination threshold, which, if you do that, suddenly There are no inhibitions there. There are no restrictions. Guys can come and go in the weight room. As many as can fit in. Teams can meet in person. They don't have to do everything virtually And so Zach Taylor has all this. He gets to do all this. Plus, he got something this spring that not every team got full attendance at O T A s. Everybody came. Everybody came. That is a great sign for the Bangles. It's a great sign if you're trying to figure out, you know, is this team going to buy into whatever it is? Zach Taylor is selling. In exchange for doing all that Zach Taylor did what a lot of bosses do, right. I used to do it. When I'm supervised people. You do this. I'll do that in return. That includes Jesse Winker that includes Nick Cassidy on us. He's played it pretty good center field. He has a higher O. P s than anybody on the team who is not named Castano's or Winker. He deserves a shot to play almost every single day. He is in the starting lineup tonight. He is also as you probably know, Left handed hitter, which effectively squeezes Shoko Akiyama out of the starting lineup, and you can't blame David Belliard. David Bell is doing what I think most of us want our managers to do. This guy is outperforming this other dude, even though this other dude is making a hell of a lot more money, And so we're playing this other guy either For the time being, or perhaps it's a permanent move as long as the guy can sustain. His production. But still Two things about Chicago, the first of which is at the end of the year last year when the Reds turned it on those final three weeks offensively. What ignited? That was the fact that showgirl Akiyama started to get on base at an unbelievably high clip. It was from September the eighth until the end of the year. Sugar Akiyama got on base 46% of the time. So there is that There's also the fact that, um the Reds are paying him seven million bucks this year. He signed a three year $21 million contract. Now I'm all in favor of playing the best guys, regardless of how much money they're making. Regardless of how many years they played in the big leagues, regardless of what they've done in the past, play the best guys and One thing I like about David Bell is the willingness to just play the best guys this season. Tyler Nay Quinn has been better. Then Shoko Akiyama at the same time. It is kind of remarkable to me. That our franchise that made a lot of decisions this offseason based on well the payroll based on the bottom line financially. Has a guy who was making the kind of money that Shoko Akiyama is making. And he barely plays. Shoko Akiyama hasn't started a game. In the month of June. I'm sorry. He hasn't started and finished a game in the month of June. He has started exactly one game in June. That was a game he came out in the fifth inning game, The Reds lost the Brewers 5 to 1. When Tyler Nay Quinn doesn't play Scott Heinemann does Now again. This isn't that anybody is getting it wrong. They may have every reason in the world to not play show go. He does not hit the ball that hard. We have seen him at times struggle against lefties. At the same time, he does have The fastest first We're home to first time on the entire team. He is a good defender. And he was the guy last year that ignited this run at the top of the batting order that took the Reds to the post season for the first time since 2013. And he is also making Seven million bucks this year. To essentially be 1/5 outfielder. What I think would be fascinating, and we're never going to get the answer to these questions. First of all the the guy who went and God Shoko Akiyama stick. Williams is no longer In a decision making capacity in the organization. When the Reds got show go, Dick Williams was getting Nick Castellanos. Mike Moustakas and we, Meiling. They spent all this money on guys from the outside. And there was this quest to go bring Shoko Akiyama to Cincinnati and Dick Williams completed it as the president of baseball operations, But he's no longer the president of baseball operations. I think it would be interesting. To, uh, to gauge how much show go would be playing if Dick Williams was still in charge. I think it would also be really interesting. To get Nick crawl to speak truthfully and for to get David Bell to speak truthfully about whether or not they were on board, with the Reds getting Shoko Akiyama in the first place. I'm sure publicly, they'll say all the right things. But as Marvin Lewis might say, I see better than I hear Show Go never plays. Another team is playing really well. The loss last night notwithstanding, the team is playing really well. And you know, it's not like they have missed his production in very limited playing time in the month of June. He's hit, okay, but he's not a an experience Big leaguer with a huge track record of success, and so it's very much up in the air. Whether or not if you did play the guy. The results would be all that good. I'm not even sure I have a question for you about this. But isn't it interesting that when they got show go, there was this acknowledgement It's going to take him a while to get up to speed playing Big League ball in the United States. You can have 70 80% in equities as you get older that migrates down to 30 to 40%. And sometimes even less. Some people's risk. Tolerance is even less than that. So it's all about balance. You know, we have to have balance to walk. We have to have balance in our life to function and we also have to have balance in our portfolio. In order to maintain it in a you know, a safe fashion through our life. In the first game of a four game series against the Cardinals in ST Louis on Thursday, this after the weekend that was lost after Friday night raids beat the Pittsburgh Pirates and then a couple of hours after the game. Two games They missed right now. The Reds have 40 games remaining. There are 41 days between now and September, the 27th which is the end of the regular season, and so obviously they're not playing today They're going to play 40 games and 40 days to get to 60. They already have a double header scheduled Against the Cubs next weekend. But there is not only a Pittsburgh trip to Cincinnati, but the Reds also going PNC Park and so you can make up one of the games there if you have to. But as of now, The plan is to play. Instead, the players were allowed to vote. Whether or not they play now, I'm not sure why that would ever be the case. But that's that was the plan. They did play the game that day in Philadelphia, and then As it turned out that they had close to 20 members of their traveling party. The majority were players, obviously not all of them. But if I'm the bengals if I have a hey coach Taylor. That's worked with quarterbacks. Like you mentioned Jared Goff Joe Boroughs Billy and character. That's a great opportunity for the bengals. I mean really what you're really trying to do is just trying to measure the expense of someone and they put it down on the ground and you actually hear about guys actually doing hand exercises to stretch their hand as wide as possible although when you're grabbing a football you're actually going to measure from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the Pinky here and this is hard because this is a hard rule and you can't really get good accurate measuring you look tired type by just under nine right. Look I'll give you a non center's Oh that's attention and would have actually done something with my. I mean what's interesting when you watch the tape of Joe Borough? There are situations where people come from behind strip him when he's trying to move up in the pocket and run. I mean that's going to happen if you have nine if you have ten inches so I mean it's not a glaring obvious problem as far as him on the football field and that's why I think it's really. It's just going to be something that will hopefully wind up forgetting about certain the biggest thing is and you know this with all of these drills you know as well. Mike you go back to the tape and you're trying to find something after the fact that says okay. Now I'm going to look specifically at these things so you're gonNA look cold weather rain and then ball security and Joe Boroughs as good as any college quarterback you're ever going to see in the pocket in terms of two hands on the ball and protecting the ball. There's nothing physically imposing about breath and he goes out there and he's throwing Abe I've ever seen and I ask them like what is the value. Where's this philosophy comes from it? I could actually be over the top and that's where I get all my philosophy from just watching my practice. It was unbelievable to watch though. I know as Lewis show. There's a tradition of how we measure hands but finger. Length is actually an underrated aspect of playing quarterback so far so far small hands but long fingers and you know what my pinky and all the time strong throwing football pictures of the five. It's easily the least important finger in the hand and I can't remember it ever being a big factor. It's all there in the grip. The pinky to me doesn't matter. It's archaic. How we're measuring the quarterback's hand span now with that. Said there's thirty four quarterbacks in the last fourteen years who have been drafted that have had hands of nine inches and smaller and really only two of them had any sort of Sustained Success Ryan. Tannehill is one of them and Jared. Goff is the other. That's it so there are thirty two out of thirty four. Who have failed. But are we going to say that he's going to the Joe Boroughs? Not GonNa have success because his hands tells me that the reason for their failure wasn't because they were nine inches weight.
