"An MVP. Yeah, so wait, so give me your MVP ladder right now, Zach. How does it look? I think it's jokic and beat Yanis and probably you'll get to meet in that order, but you can flip and beat in your kitchen and I don't really have any argument for you. I mean, embiid is just beyond ridiculous. So in those three are the top three to me. And after that, I'd have to dive a little deeper into the research, but I think John morant will be in that conversation. Derozan will be there. Dončić is working his way into its Steph is in it. And Chris Paul, I think, was in it before this injury and Durant obviously was in it before his injury, but those would be the other names that I would look at for four and 5. So you're saying Daryl morey general manager will not be the first ever executive to win the MVP award. He will not he will not, but his center might and that will make it very, very happy, and he has another guy who won the MVP on his roster now who Daryl morey will tell you variable vociferous terms.

This season with the Lakers, sliding, but LeBron peaking at age 37. Have you enjoyed this? Are you exhausted by it? Where are you on it? I enjoy watching LeBron play. No matter what the circumstances. So I've enjoyed the LeBron experience. I've enjoyed him trying to figure out what in the hell am I supposed to do here? Of course, particularly with Anthony Davis. Okay, I'm playing center now. I kind of playing center, at least on offense, not really on defense, like who's that guy. That guy is pretty good. I think he can shoot Stanley Johnson's on my Stanley Johnson starting. That's like 35 minutes, or I got to make that work. So I always enjoy watching LeBron play. I mean, he's arguably the disgrace player of all time. The Lakers discussion is, I mean, look, there are 28 and 36. And yes, of course, there are theoretically not a team you want. They're the proverbial team. You're not excited to face. If they have LeBron James and Anthony Davis, which is true. All caps, the team you don't want to face come postseason time. But 28 and 36 is 28 and 36 vendors, not that good. And I was excited to watch them problem solve the Westbrook thing because that's the kind of thing that excites me as a day to today basketball observers. Okay, here's this, here's this puzzle and instead of a puzzle piece you've dropped an anvil on top of the puzzle. How do we make this anvil into a puzzle piece? And I thought, it'll be fun to see them make progress and all the different things they try and all the different ways that Russ's game is tweaked and it's just an anvil. No, Zack, it's like one of those 5000 piece puzzles that's just of like the night sky and you're like, I don't know how to even begin to find pieces that fit with other pieces here. I just had a neighbor do a 4000 piece puzzle of the world where three quarters of it is ocean that all looks the same and they finished it and it's missing one piece. Can you imagine that you finished it and see if it's missing one piece? I would need to take a week off of work to search for that piece. Well, Zach, it feels like a metaphor for like LeBron James's career at this point, right? Because what else does he need, if not like, I don't know to prove a point that he can make even a team like this work. And what we saw on Saturday was him basically assemble that million piece puzzle, right? He scores 50 points. He becomes the oldest guy to have 55 and ten in an NBA game ever. He was shooting 61% from the field on 31 shots. I mean, what have you learned about LeBron? This year, having watched stuff like that. I've learned to appreciate how hard what he did early in his current Cleveland was, Carrie knows teams to 60 wins. And it's just hard for anybody when the piece is just weird and ill fitting and overlapping. So it's appreciating how much he did earlier in his career and how hard and how important it is, even if the names are on sexy, you can go back and look at those caps scenes, the names are not sexy. They made some sense at least around a player like young LeBron, and this team just, they traded all the guys who made sense of the Anthony Davis. Yeah, LeBron is 37 now. And Nikola Jokić incidentally is 27. And we just saw him, jokic, put up a 46 point triple double on Sunday Night, Zach. He scored 30 in the fourth quarter and overtime alone. So explain Nikola Jokić for those of us who have maybe been hibernating through the last season or two of the Denver Nuggets. Which most people have been. You know, we hear things like, well, we've never seen a player like that before. And then you're like, well, there are a couple of players kind of like that before. I don't think there's ever been a player like yoga before. You just had another triple double last night against the warriors. Just Ho hung, not a triple double. And again, they were like minus a lot in the 13 minutes that he had to rest in the game or whatever it is. We've just never seen a passer like this and his size who can pass from everywhere. From any position back to the basket, 75 foot heaves the whole thing, combined with he might be the finest post scorer in the NBA, and he's an elite pick and pop three point shooter. And so there's just no answer for a player like that who thinks three steps ahead and in any situation if he catches the ball with the defense and rotation already has outsmarted you before he even catches the ball, basically. And it's just like, you know, I keep hearing from people who are skeptical of him for some reason is if he's done nothing in the playoffs, which is not true at all. He's been an incredible postseason player. Well, what is the skepticism, Zack? Because it's very jarring to talk to people who study the game so deeply like you. And then to casual NBA fans and I wonder like what is the best case against him? Well, I've seen number one, he's only won one game in the Conference Finals. And there have been other players who won their first MVPs before they appeared in indie games in the Conference Finals. And then because his advanced stats are so good and you can take or leave advanced stats if you want. The fact is he is beyond lapping the entire field in all of them this year. There's this perception I think that well, you have to look Joel's averaging 31 and 12 and to make yoga just in case you've got to look at vorp and schnapp him and snip them and stuff that I don't understand. It's like, not really. I mean like 27 14 and 8 on 58% shooting, that's just regular stats. That's like 27, 14 and 8. Just let that sink in for a second. That's like Shaq, but with Ada cysts or, you know, I don't know whatever however you want to frame it. And then he just looks kind of schlubby. He's arms are always pink. It's like a running joke. I don't know if people are slapping them or scratching them that his arms are always pink and it just looks, it doesn't jump, doesn't look like.

"On right now? In Brooklyn, he came and he was like, I don't buy barely even want to shoot all average 16 assists again if you guys want. What do you need me to do? So like we've seen that movie before, but you know, there's no reason to think it'll change because he's walking into a team that he chose and that is dominant right off the start. And the embiid aspect of all of this, right? You mentioned his conditioning and obviously what he's doing right now is, I mean, it feels like peak embiid. If this isn't peak embiid, then we're going to see something that we've never seen before. Basically, because it was already easy for him because he can get to the line so much. But the introduction of Hardin has allowed him to balance his game so that it's not so hard for him. He can get 6, 7, easy. Like catch flick buckets a game. And playing with Hardin, it's not like he's just gonna get dunks and dunks and dunks like capella. He gets to show off different skills, different touch that he has, catching the ball at the dotted line for a hook shot, but yeah, I mean like plowing through double teams and having people hit your arms and your shoulders and your back all the time. Sometimes you fall over. Like even if you're 7, whatever he is in a massive specimen of humanity, that hurts after a while, man, it's like not so fun. And so the feeling going into tonight, Zach and his game that is as anticipated a regular season game as I can recall with Ben returning to Philly. I mean, he's not gonna be playing because of this back injury and his mental health is also still the subject of speculation and concern. But Kevin Durant made it pretty clear what they expect. Nobody will hold his hand. I'm sure it's gonna be some personal attacks. You know, something that might, you know, some words that make trigger you as personally, but that's just how fans are. They want to get into our skin, they want to let their voices be heard. And so if that's the case, if you are Ben Simmons Zach, what's your strategy here? Why not just delay the exposure until you're ready to actually be on the court? I think it's actually, if I'm playing it out from his perspective, I think it's actually kind of smart. Rip the band aid like halfway off by entering the building, walk into the bench, everyone's gonna see you if they're mean they'll show you on the jumbotron. It's Philly Zack. I mean, these are the people who pelted Santa with snowballs and also hate whenever you point out that they pelted Santa with a snowballs. They're gonna be mean. Hopefully they're more creative than like Simmons sucks. Like at least come up with like when they did the Trae Young is balding thing in New York. I was like, okay, at least I mean, that's very superficial and low hanging fruit. So they'll come prep less. They'll be signs of it. I don't think they'll confiscate any sides. But then you get to say in your mind, okay, I did it. Now diversion therapy. That's right. Slowly taking a foot step by step into the ocean. The real test is going to be when you're in Philly and Doc fouls you on purpose late in the game to take you to the foul line. Or when you catch the ball 12 feet from the rim and the crowd is roaring because they're really want you to shoot and they really want you to miss, but they also really want you to not shoot and not get fouled and like it's all a win for them. And so the nets right now, I mean, what are you seeing from them, Zach, because this is, again, the presumptive title favorite coming out of the east. But they're like a play in team right now, right? Around 500 hovering in that 7 to ten seed range, clearly they need Ben Simmons really soon, but what's your diagnosis of Brooklyn right now? Yeah, we need to, we need to retire the title favorite thing. I've said this for like three weeks now on TV that I feel like I'm in The Twilight Zone talking about the nets because every question I get is like, well, how deep of a run can they make in the playoffs? And then I look at the standings and I'm like, all they do is lose. Every game they lose. Are we sure they're and I understand what everyone is projecting forward this fully formed team. Okay, sure. First of all, if they play Toronto in the play in, in Toronto, Kyrie can't play that game. What condition is Simmons going to be in? If you're in the playing by definition, you are at risk of not making the playoffs period. And so that's where they are. And I just need to see them play. And actually, that's why I am curious about this game in Philly because it's a Kyrie KD game. And we just haven't seen a lot of that in the last two or three months. Just those two guys, but we did see how well it could work against the hornets on Tuesday. Ben. I mean, they won the nets did a 132 to a 121. Kyrie dropped 50. Irving. Dance is free and lays it in. Gorgeous wizardry from Kyrie Irving. And so how has Ben gonna fit into that dynamic? As a basketball player playing freely, he's a perfect fit on their team for all the reasons that were immediately apparent when this trade became a possibility. Yeah. He's in all world defensive player who can guard every position. And on offense, the comparison everybody made was, he clearly is not a ball dominant point guard in the half court. The way that the sixers needed him to be. Well, he doesn't need to be that player with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. He can beat draymond green. He could set screens, you double Durant, he slips to the rim, Simmons is now in that draymond four on three situations spray out passes, hopefully attack the rim and not be afraid to get fouled. And if he has to be in the dunker spot a lot, which was his unwanted home in Philly, like that's okay for the nets because they have two elite shot creators who can absorb that kind of non activity in a way Philly could not because they had no elite perimeter shot creators in one elite post creator who wanted to be in that same home that Simmons was inhabiting. So it's just like the nets are better equipped to absorb that than the sixers were. And the other aspect of the fed too is that the Brooklyn fan base is nothing like the city of Philadelphia. No, the Barclays center is, if you want to read a book, while watching an NBA game, it's in your top three. After the break, I want to get into the rest of the open book that has been this NBA season and who else we need to know about. "Zack, I love a good conspiracy. You know, I'll be honest here. And the one that you laid out on your podcast last week, it felt like something that fit very neatly with those long 16 months of winner that Daryl morey told me about it slow last weekend. Look, I have to come up, I have to say out front, I don't actually believe this is true. The conspiracy theory is very simple. The sixers and the rockets and James Harden put a long con on the nets and used them as a Patsy middleman to help themselves in the process. And the theory is simple. James Harden wanted to go to Philly. When I was going through everything I was going through, you know, in Houston, Philly was my first choice. I just didn't happen. He said now, Philly's bell I top choice all along. I don't know that that was true back in the day, we know Daryl morey covets James Harden above the Holy Grail, okay? But they couldn't find a deal that worked. Maybe because Houston didn't want Ben Simmons. What Houston really wanted was draft picks from the Brooklyn Nets in a whole bunch of swaps. Well, what about, all right, let's send James Harden to Brooklyn. Destabilized the nets. So those draft picks become more valuable in the long run. And then James will get himself to Philly, you get James Harden, Daryl morey. We get more valuable draft picks, the nets, we just string them along, like the Patsy in a long Connor's movie, and also as I have said, the whole Tillman for Tito will never trade James Harden at Daryl morey. It's too bitter. The departure, it's the perfect cover. They were so loud about it. And now they're all coming out and saying, this is where I want it to be all along. This and that. So here's why, here's why it's not plausible. Number one, those draft picks are valuable if the nets fall apart, right? Like that's what Houston wants. Ben Simmons being so much younger than James Harden would seem to insulate the nets in like the medium to long-term from complete organizational collapse. Number two, I don't think you could have predicted things like a vaccination law that prohibits Kyrie Irving from playing in home games and some road games in the event that James Harden would also go to Brooklyn that will alienate James Harden make him a little angry. Some conspiracy theories are like bonkers insane. This one given all the connections all the rockets alums that are in the sixers front office. The CEO is the guy who was Daryl CEO in Houston now the guy in Philly, yes. You can put up the whiteboard in the background and have the strings and thumbtacks connecting to various Sylvia, yes. The number one ingredient that I conspiracy theory needs is just a grain, really, of plausibility. And I watch the sixers now, and I am just huffing what James Harden is given out, right? What the sixers have been with James Harden. With the rocket's band back together, transplanted in Philly, they haven't lost with him. They won the 5 games they played with James at point guard. And so when you look at what the sixers have looked like, what do you see? I've stopped even looking at the plus minus with embiid and Hardin on the floor together because it's just, it's a lot. It's just a lot of points in the positive direction. When they made the trade, I remember that day and obviously we were all thinking about this trade days before it happened. If they can keep maxi and thigh and green, I think they have enough in the tank enough shooting in enough defense around those two guys to make a title run. They're even better sooner than I thought they would be. And they look completely dominant the way Doc is staggering the minutes has been very smart. Tyrese Maxie is one of the biggest stories in the NBA this season and has been not just a hand in glove fit with those two, but like a legitimate third pillar of that team. It's incredible, Zach. I mean, number one that they didn't have to give up tyrese maxi in this deal in retrospect, but also that he is the third leg of a tripod. I mean, it feels unsustainable how perfect and how good he has been in this role, playing off ball, doing the stuff from the perimeter that I didn't know he could do this well. What has been most surprising to you about maxi's fit alongside harden? Really only the degree of efficiency of the shooting and particularly his outside gym. They ran a stat that since X date, tyrese Maxie has the third highest field goal percentage in the league and it's like two centers ahead of him and I don't know remember who they were. It's like 66% or something. And what I pictured with Maxie is, okay, number one, I have enough faith in his three point shot now pretty hard. And I think that's real. He's shooting it off the dribble. He's shooting off the catch. When guys go under on his picks, he's like, you can't do that to me. Tyrese turn around, I am kidding me. Has become more and more reliable with each passing game. The other thing I pictured was, and this is what has been just blow away awesome. Hardin and bead pick and roll help defense sinks in a little bit off maxi kick to him at like that diagonal wing. And he just flies through that alley before the defense can recover. And he's at the rim. Here comes tyrese Maxie. Are you kidding me? You know, Brett Brown used to always say, I don't want Ben Simmons to outrun Joel embiid. I don't want the offense to outrun Joel embiid. Those two guys have looked at max and you're like, we'll play just as fast as you, man. We'll run up after rebounds. Like, they are flying up and down the floor. That's a credit to both of them. And I think it's also the biggest piece of evidence that embiid's conditioning, it's not just good. It's elite. Yeah, I mean, look, so you remember when I presume you were first like dating your wife and you had to meet the parents and you were on your best behavior. It feels like James Harden is on meet the parents point guard mode right now. Let me show you exactly what I wasn't in Brooklyn and in Houston. When you most recently saw me. He's a master of that mode. He could meet the parents over and over and over, win over every new set of parents. It's like the fourth visit happens to the parents house. It's like, is James still asleep? It's noon. What happened last night? Why does James have like 5 multicolored VIP lounge wristbands.

"You know? Are you in a game now or no? What do you mean? Do you have a regular poker game or you don't? I don't. I have a weird thing. I don't love gambling against my Friends. But some people love it. For me, it's like, I'm not a 100% in on it. I'm too competitive. I have a regular game, and I really still get something out of that game. There are guys. Yeah, like I still play whenever I can. I play once a week. I don't go once a week, but I go close to whenever I can and I still really love that. And those guys are mostly my Friends from poker, except one or two of them. I know separately. And I really like really care about these dudes and I really enjoy trying to take their money. That's fun. You still in Levine or no. No, I haven't played in years. I mean, I'd be such an easy mark now. I don't even know my way around. The 6 iterations of the game have passed me by now. That's the study up for rounders two. It's a little like golf. You can't just go away and then come back. I'll tell you guys this. And then you have to go. Yeah, no. No, I'm here with you. But no, I right before pandemic, like I was really winning in the game. And I thought, those guys kept playing at a certain point, and I just have gone back now three or four times, and I just got, I just got destroyed last Monday night and I came home. And I Sammy texted me from wherever he was, and he was like, how'd you two? And I go, I lost and I suck now. Like, I just have, I, in the year and a half, I got much fucking worse at poker. I made three moves. I can't blame the deck. I can't believe anything other than like, I literally was just like, here, big Russian Arthur, take my money. Just fucking take my money. I handed it across the table, like my whole stack twice. It's an anti bad beat story. It is, and I suck. I'm a moron. It's literally like I lost 30 IQ points. I was like, oh, nope. I guess two pairs better than a straight. I feel that way with driving, 'cause I really felt like I was one of the three best drivers, probably in America. I'm not counting like F one, but just if you needed to get the drivers. If you need to get to the movies in ten minutes and it was 18 minutes away, like I was your guy. If we needed to go, my daughter overslept and we had to get her a soccer game and it was an hour and a half away, but we had to be there. I'm your guy. Last like, I don't know. You're so. I don't have the same confidence on the highway anymore. If you lose a little bit of aggression, you're a disaster. I've lost the edge, a tiny bit, little days of thundering, you know, coming out of the hospital. Cold trickle. I think you need the cream and the clear, man. We gotta get you going with the I think Kareem. I feel like my eyesight, maybe I need to check the content. Maybe my eyes are just not there, you know? It happens. I ask you one basketball question about the 75. Yeah. Is it right that Chris Paul was that many places ahead of Allen Iverson? No. Wait, did they actually have real rankings? No, like ESPN did like these rankings. I don't know. I don't take those seriously because most of the people doing those don't actually, I agree. And this big ranking where they tried and I was like, that seems crazy to me. Like, they seem much closer together. Paul, I have Paul in the top 30 based on how he was able to redo it the last couple of years. I think I ever since drifted into the high 40s. 41 to 45 range. I would say. Chris Paul is somewhere around what, 30 no, I would say he's like in that I forget where I had him on the list, but like the 25 to 29 ranch. Iverson gets a lot of penalty points for and I was like his biggest defender. I wrote a giant thing about him, but if you're really gonna start to compare him against the top 50 guys, play out performance starts to matter. And other than the finals, he flames out every year. And then his career was just too short. You know, he didn't have those last few years when he was still good, but not great. He went from, I'm still good to I'm out of the league. So whereas Chris, it would be like if Chris just left the league in 2016, we wouldn't be saying he's the top 30 guys. The extra stuff from the last couple of years, really made that. Yeah, I mean, to me, I guess. And hearing JJ talk about Chris, I've never, you know, he talks about him like, so highly is like, you know, if you don't play basketball you can't really understand. So I know that Chris Paul's top 30, but in my head, Iverson's top 32, but I guess not. I guess he's not anymore. All right. I think in the Twitter YouTube era, guys like Iverson do really well as the distance passes and people start to forget the facts and stuff. And so in one way, it's better for him. In another way, it's worse because I always thought the best case for him was the impact of seeing him in person, which I know both of you guys saw. He was just one of the most incredible in person basketball experiences, and that's why I rated him so high. But as the years pass, you can really start picking apart his stats and the playoff performance stuff like that. But I still feel like him even winning a game over the 2001 Lakers, which is probably one of the best four teams ever. Single handley just beat him for a game. I remember this thing he did. It was incredible. But then he got, and then he got stomped, you know? Yeah. But I mean, Jesus, that was the only time that team lost. So anyway, I think we all, we're all lined out Iverson. Revere the guy he was amazing, but I think there's just a lot of good guys though. And guys are moving in there like jokic is climbing up. You know? This is already there. And of course we could have embiid coming this year. Who knows? And there's just magic and Larry fall out of the top 5, 6 at a certain point or not. I mean, not yet.

"And yeah, you know, he's almost like an NBA GM who is scouting different prospects. And it's like, I like this guy, this guy has something, but the difference is he's now then going into business with that person trying to shape their business. If he doesn't like the way things are going, which is why the end of the first episode when he brings in the ringer who might be a spy, is he here to help, is he is girly planting him? What's going on? That's the extra level that goes on. But yeah, I mean, obviously, because I got to spend a lot of time with girly. At one point in my life and that was my favorite part of the show that it was Kyle Chandler playing curly. I just thoroughly enjoyed it. Yeah, me too. And you know, I mean, I know Bill pretty well. And I really like him. And I had to he and I just put up really hard lines to not talk about any of this. We talk about rock and roll all the time. And we text about music. But we had to like, you know, just not engage on this, but I agree with you. As a human being, I don't know, I only know his business life from Mike Isaac's book, but as a guy, I am fond of him and I agree he uses the height, he was the hyper world. He's like the second biggest Jason isbell fan in the world behind me. So we have that. Well, he's also common. Extremely direct. Puts it out, cards on the table. And he's just like, he's like other guys. They're not investing in something unless they can make at least ten times the money from it, right? You know what? So he asked questions like, how do I get from point a to point D where I can get ten times more money back? That's his endgame. But when you say the thing is Kyle is so great, Kyle Chandler, like you said, I mean, he does even though the height thing isn't there. He has the rest. Capture the essence of what makes girly so fascinating. Yeah. Which is like, you know, a guy who's going to make these giant decisions of, you know, our culture we hear these things. But they're making bets. You know, they're stepping up to the craps table, man, and they're just making gigantic bets. And not counting on betting batting a 100% on them. Yeah, they're not making the bet where they're betting past and then they're backing up their bet. I mean, they're putting points. They're putting all this money on all the points on the board, right? There's a line, there's a line where girl he says, this will be the one that pays for all the others. The idea that there's going to be a lot of losers in these bets you place. So you need a huge payoff to make it all worth it. Yeah. If he's going to double his money, that doesn't interest him. No, if you're going to only double, you got to be right every time, right? Otherwise you're going to run out of bankroll. You got to be, you got to get paid like a hundred times. So you're handling Travis, he's unraveling, I'm sure, as the season goes along. Did you ultimately want people to like Travis or at least like the character, like how do you balance that? Because we recognize this guy as a super charismatic figure who enlisted tons of people into his vision. So we wanted people to feel like they were like leaning into his point of view and the early episodes because how did all those people go to work and do what he wanted them to do. And then like Brian was saying, as it goes along, there are moments of separation. For the audience and for the people that work with him. Yeah, like Dave sang, you want to understand why he's so effective and how he galvanizes people and how he's charismatic. If you come away understanding him and understanding what drives him and understanding why people are taken with him, you don't have to come away from it. Liking him. And I think plenty of people won't and plenty of people will, and I think that will really say something about them more. And you know, by the way, it's Kyrie really that I have problems with not that that's like you. Because like you know, having now known a few, I like people involved with the nets and I can't really, like I like the sixers, you know, I like Daryl morey, so I'm rooting for Hardin to play well. Compliments always hedging his bets in real time. We're going to make sure nobody is bad in them. What do you think? The next GM is going to text you. Like I can't believe you slammed us on the Simmons pod with the fuck. Let me ask you a question. Would Sean, is it possible that Sean would text and say something.

"From that whole playoffs. I think fear is really underrated as a trait in sports and I think we gloss over it and it could be any level. You could be talking about elementary school, high school, college, whatever. The kids that are out there and they're just like, I'm almost like there's a rational confidence to them. I'm really good. I don't care. Giannis should have been psyched out at some point during that sun series because especially like if you go back and watch a couple of those games, you know, they were kind of cratering and part of it was because of the free throws, remember? And at some point there was a Simmons kind of scenario there. But they fought through it. And I think he is one of the most mentally tough guys in the league. If we're doing our mentally tough rankings, I don't know who's won, but he's up there. LeBron's obviously up there. But Giannis is absolutely a 100% up there. Chris Paul. Also, also he heard his knee in the second round and everyone was like, oh my God, his body is broken. It's over. And then like three games later, he was scoring 50 in the finals, like nothing happened. Yeah, I think I'm glad you brought up the Simmons Giannis thing because I said this to you before we started taping. I do wonder if we've spent more time talking about Simmons than any kind of not that consequential star in NBA history. I'm sure there's been other examples over the years. There was a lot of Stephon marbury talk in the 2000s, for instance. I think honestly, Vince Carter, as cool of a career, it's cool of a career as he had. If you actually look back at his career, it's like he was in round two once. Got traded to Orlando. They made the conference final, Celtics knocked him out, but mister big free throws in that series. Yeah, and was on better teams than I think people realized he quit on Toronto and I think we look back at that. I think now his career, everybody thinks of so fondly and the dunks and how exciting he was. But I look at it as pretty disappointing. I think he could have, I think he could have had a much bigger foothold on that whole Kobe generation than he probably did. He certainly, from a talent standpoint, seeing both those guys in person and their peak, they're pretty close. This was young vents to early 2000s Vince was unstoppable, completely outside, just like Kobe was. I don't really feel like one was more dominant than the other, but Kobe just was, you know, mentally different. I think late career Dallas Vince kind of rewrote the narrative of some of his career and justifiably. So he has to play off buzzer beater against the spurs. Can I give you one of the more talked about that maybe they deserve stars that's going to hit, it's going to hit you a little bit in the gut and it's going to hurt me a little bit, but I kind of think I should say it. Can I give it to you? Yeah. Antoine walker. Yeah, you're right. I was fascinated by it to a walker. I talked all the time, but I didn't work. What did it amount to? That means a good player, he made a couple of all star games. How many also games and Antoine walker make three? He made a couple. He got Kenya Martin kinda when Katie Martin destroyed him in the back to back postseasons and that was it. And then he couldn't shoot the free throws anymore. But you know, we've had guys over the years that actually probably deserved some of the some of the bus. How many did he make? Three. Three. Like rondo is somebody that we probably talked about more than we needed to. But on the other hand, he was the best player in a series that had LeBron James at age 25 and went toe to toe with LeBron and was better and his team won. And in 2012, dragged them within the precipice of the finals. And in 2009, had so he had stuff, you know? And I think with Simmons, I just want to see it because I do think there's a scenario where he's just not playing in the last 8 minutes of big games for them, especially if they're on the road. Because Philly is going to be brutal in Boston is going to be brutal to him. I'll be interested to see if Chicago, like what we get from those crowds. More unanswerable questions for you. What we see draymond again. Yes. Okay. As of now, yes, obviously with the back issue as we have learned in our relearning all the time, you never know, but everything I've heard recently is including straight from draymond when he was on TNT is optimistic about a return well before the regular season is over. Without any knowledge of anything else, I'm going to go yes. Do you know when the last time he's played? What's today, February 24th, I'm going to guess January 18th. January 5th, 5th, he's been at a month and a half, and there's doesn't seem like there's, I know he's played only a thousand 1035 minutes or some such thing. So they were 29 and 7. He got hurt on during the January 5th game. That was his last game, which they lost. And then they went 13 and 9 after that. So they're basically 29 and 7 and then 13 and ten. They're now 42 and 7, 17. And I mean, there's a bunch of reasons. I think this is important. If he's not a 100%, I don't think they can win the title. I think they need him a 100%. It can't be like him playing through stuff. He's sitting out. He's on the bench with the big heat rap on his back. They made the decision. They didn't want to trade for insurance in any way. They didn't want to put wiseman on the table. They punted on miles Turner. They didn't even want to do the Ibaka time. They're way over the tax. And I think he could say it's smart. You could say they're playing the long game, but I think they're thinking, you know, we want to be in this for a few years here. And we hope draymond comes back. My point is, if he doesn't come back, cross them off. Because I don't think they have any, I think he has to be a 100%. I don't even think 90%. Way how deep the west at the top three of the west plus how crazy the east is. To win four straight playoff rounds. You got to be a full power this year. What about 94%? How about 92? No, he's going to have to play in crunch time for them and he's going to have to guard bigger dudes. And that's going to be how they have to play if they want to win. And if he's to bang, especially if you're playing every other day. So I'm officially concerned. And maybe I'm sensitive to it because my daughter had a back thing and had a bulging disk and it was like, no, it would be 6 weeks, then it was four months. And he has better science than she does, but back scare me as you know. Backs and feet are my two, the two things that I just cringe. You got to start doing the LeBron a $1 million a year on your daughter's health and physical well-being. I'm what do you do? What are you doing? Well, by the way, LeBron is at like $3 million a year now. I think the $1 billion here is Chris Paul, is that like a million and a half a year. All right, so you can start at a million. What are we talking about? Four months for a bulging disc with what are you doing? A little van? It's the back injuries are rough. So do you think we see.

First of all you might change. It changed the name right there the los angeles. Jefferson's okay because they're moving on up look and russell westbrook was huge and then makes them the favorite to come out of the western conference in my is that makes him the favourite to win the title. We keep talking about russell. Westbrook and his shotmaking sat take thing that we just keep paying this narrative about him but he's lead to league in assists three times throughout his career. He led the league in this last year when he was playing with a whole bunch of g. League guys one thing that we do notice that russell westbrook hasn't played with a big like anthony davis and if anthony davis can't commit to plan the center position and him in russell westbrook is in the role. You better watch the hell out because you don't know how to stop it. Secondly right who delayed just have one of our good friends phys there would it. They'll coastal it. Would the miami heat..

"That he obviously has in his game. Well first of all you remember. We're not that far removed like it was the beginning of last season. The pre pandemic season when there were a lot of suns fans who were making the were better off. Starting aaron baynes arguing because aron baynes was shooting really well from three and he was asking the floor for the guards and he's a more sound positional defender and there was a sort of impatience with them. What they did was nothing. Fancy number one. He got reps. He got reps. They changed their scheme a little bit to dial it back eleazer for him but he got reps he. He grew to understand the rhythm of how the pick and roll worked. What guys like to do had manipulate them. And the other thing is they got better. Players like mikhail. Bridges became a really good defensive player. Good player devon booker been every year. They traded for chris. Paul all of a sudden when you were trying to defend the pick and roll with a rookie point guard experience point guard. Who's not very good at it now. You've got chris paul. One of the greatest defensive point guards at all time a guy who for better or worse is going to be talking to you the entire freaking game and probably in your nightmares all season long about pick and roll defense and what the sons are saying to aided in his dreams and his nightmares as defending the pick and roll is concerned. What are the mantras. They're trying to imbue in this kid. So shout out mark. Brian one of those coaches who makes the nba. A man journeyman in the league is a player. Oklahoma city assistant for a long time. Kind of a big man whisper. You don't really hear his name you don't talk about but he's just doing the work every day with from kendrick perkins to surge baca to address him and he has to rules that he he repeated them to me on the phone like thirty times. So i can. I can only imagine what the andrea life is number. one is. Don't let the big man get behind your head so if the big man's rolling into the basket and you're kinda see him out of your peripheral vision and he's behind head. He's not parallel to your head anymore. You're in trouble. The lobbyists come in. Or if someone's got to help you but number two is this is the one you repeated over and over again. The ball scores the ball scores. Which means you cannot abandoned that ball handler early because if you do. He's the most dangerous player on the floor. He's got the balls we you just repeat the deondraye and he told me you know deirdre's reached the point. Where if if you slips up and he comes to the bench. I can just sit him down and say don't let the big it behind your head the ball scores and he comes right back to me. He's right back in the game. Yeah i imagine. Almost this is like djeddai. Big man trainings. Act because you start as a patio on. You have no idea how to do any of the stuff you have these phrases that repeated and drilled into your brain and then you emerge on the other end as something of a master india andhra. Aden's case how would you describe where he is right now in terms of his ability to live in between those two phrases in those two reminders. He's gotten really good and he's reached maybe not the final stage but the beginnings of the final stage of big man pick and roll defence which is not only know now how to survive in the space how to guard these guys at once without letting either of them get free and that's just footwork and having your arms out and being big but now i'm kind of getting confident now. I think i might be able to manipulate one of those guys might be able to trick them so of drew holidays coming at me and jaanus role in. I'm in between them. I might be more. I might be so confident in my guard to recover or my own ability to recover. Maybe i could take a jab step at jrue holiday and make them think i'm coming. And then he throws the la but by the time that lives in the air. I've tricked him. I'm going to intercept it or tip it away holiday using a yacht a screen right the circle into the high post now flips it towards the rim four yards but deflected away by eytan. Excellent defense by eight. You're starting to see that kind of manipulation for him which at age twenty two twenty three yet. That's pretty pretty damned impressive. So where does chris. Paul fit into all of this sack. Because i know in the bubble last season before they ever got. Cb three they went on that run right. a game. winning streak almost got in the playoffs. Didn't quite get there but clearly people like chris. Paul were watching and observing. What was being built out in phoenix. When chris arrives what impact does he have immediately on this player. Well it's know there's been sort of all these twitter memes about over crediting chris. Paul like you have to come zach. Wanna be careful to not give credit to chris paul for the work day andrea eight and has been doing but the question remains you. You almost expect like him to be credited. For pete alonso winning the home run derby like creation of the pfizer vaccine or something but but i can only take what the players say at face value. I'd be christmas ego doesn't need this kind of stroke the andrea there's no incentive to come out and say oh this guy meant a lot to me and he says it anyway and what he said was chris. Paul would take me aside. Say hey look. I've played against jamal. Murray nicoll yokich four games. I've played against dame lillard and use of norwich twenty five games. Here's what they to do. Here's how narcotics throw. Here's how they flipped a screen and and by the way. I'll be there for you. I'm not going to get hit by a screen. I'm gonna talk to you. I'm going to get around the pick. We're gonna do this together and also. Da told me cpi got on my ass like he's not going to let up if you if you have a little bit of an angle mistake a little footwork mistake. Like he's going to let you hear about it and he wanted that he needed it. He craved it. An and he likes plan with chris gaza. He's the best thing to happen to my career. You know just teaching me so many things. The most important being told me was angles so just finding highly get people open. You know how to slip out of screens. You get him to his spots and stuff land just to put pressure on certain teams and stuff like that. You know he's been a big deal. It occurs to me though that a guy who comes in is the number one overall. Pick a lotta guys like the idea that what their team wants them to do is become more narrow and almost more specialized to suit their needs as opposed to his possible. Potentials ac but what we've seen from him defensively as you describe but also offensively. I mean the stat. That currently is still accurate. Which is that. No one has had a more accurate postseason in nba history than de'andre eight. And what does that speak to look. I'm sure andrei and envision his career shooting more jump shots phase from the post like spins on the baseline for dunks. And he'll get chances to do that in the future on this team. With to pick. And roll ball handlers. Who are just as good as it gets and shooters around him at all times him to screen and and be big and get off its rebounds and beat ups which is all of which he's done. I mean i would assume there's part of him. That's like i can do more than this. I know i can do more than this. But you get this feedback loop. That happens in the playoffs where it's like. Oh everyone's noticing. My contributions that i thought would go unnoticed because no one really cares if we win or lose a game in january but everyone cares if we win or lose game. Three of the series. Molly's contributions are getting noticed. We're winning when we win. Everyone gets credit. Everybody gets lifted up. Everybody is on the front page of espn and on sportscenter. All that i'm going to lean into these things even more. I'm going to keep leaning into them. Even in two three years when chris paul is older. Or maybe not here and i need to do more stuff on offense. I've learned this part of my appreciated. And you get that sort of feedback loop in the regular season. You only get it in the playoffs when you win now. You don't care about it in the regular season you don't care about it really often times until like an nba finals zach. Where i find myself watching him in game one and game two being absolutely indispensable to the phoenix suns but then game three comes along and in this other way. That importance is almost more explicitly reinforced. What happens there. Yeah he gets in trouble and at first they take him off and put jae crowder honestly looks a little more comfortable in that matchup than he does with a seven footer on and then he gets them so much trouble that he only played twenty four minutes and you just feel his lack of size like yawns has gone to the rim. And all of a sudden. It's just an extra foot of limbs that he doesn't have to worry about anymore. Either on him or coming from the weak side and you also begin to feel the lack of depth with dario sarajevo. For the.

I am disgusting and gross and video of this will not be shown to the world. Thank god zach. Lowe hosts the low post podcast and he is dripping as usual with salty. nba insight. And you've been hustling as a reporter as well zach because your story on the andrea aiden. It arrives at the perfect time for me. Because i i want to be perfectly frank with you here. I was completely unprepared for how important this guy has been to the nba playoffs and now the nba finals. Because as we'll get to even though he ran into foul trouble and game three his absence in that game as a result it kinda underscored his importance even more. So just explain for the people here who've been struggling like me. How important is this guy to the sons. And how star has his evolution been as a player so on some podcast many moons and maybe one pandemic ago. I called the andre eight and the most important swing player in the nba for the next four or five years. If he hits it's interesting if he plateaus two sons. Don't get all that interesting. And part of the reason he was so interesting is because he can do so many things on both ends of the floor. You almost didn't know which direction to push them on offense. Should he run. Should you shoot. Three's should pass from the elbow like yokich. What if the comes. A jack of all trades master of none kind of player and he's gotten a ton of credit in the playoffs for sacrificing his post touches and his mid range jumper. And all that to just do the dirty work. It's screen and dive on offense for chris. Paul and booker. But i wanted to write the flip side of the story. Which is all this cool. It doesn't get you to wins from the title if he doesn't make an even bigger leap on defense from his rookie year to year. I honestly don't recall the player who has improved more on defense in that span particularly big man. And as you know you can have all the great perimeter defenders. You want if your last line of defense is in good. You're not going anywhere. And that's that to me has been the most important change in his game. Yeah i want to get to the craft of defense which you reported so exhaustively in your piece. But before then i want to just go back to that momentous pivotal nba draft in two thousand eighteen sack. Because obviously the andreea aiden is the number one. Pick for the phoenix suns. But it's worth reminding everybody as the andrea aid and i think has been reminded by everybody for years now at number three goes luca danni which the dallas mavericks at number five goes trae young to the atlanta hawks. Did the phoenix suns presented with all this talent potentially in front of them go with the big guy. Well there's been a lot of theories about that over. The years in their coach at the time. Eager kokoschka was lenient. National team coach. New luca danni. It's very well right. The theories stretched from robert. Sauber just fell in love with the local kid from university of arizona to really good like size size size and ryan mcdonagh and his time is. Gm drafted a lot of big guys. Marquees chris drug and bender. Alex len lye clearly. They had an affinity for size there. And i think it just shows you. The phoenix story is a lot of it. Is if you keep drafting at the top or near the top. The nba is pretty forgiving. Like a lot of those guys are going to be really good. You might not get the best one but you gotta really good one and then if you hit one outside the top like booker at thirteen. I think you're going to be in business even if you mess up a lot of other stuff. So as he gets going in his rookie year. This is twenty eight thousand nine hundred nine now zach. How does it go for him. Because one of the words that jumped off the page to me in your piece was the adjective starstruck. Yeah i didn't really know that about him. I was talking to cordless williamson big nasty. Who is an assistant coach on. That team and he remembers deondraye almost being intimidated by some of the senators that he had watched on. Tv any brought up. Stephen adams and i was like man. I didn't i mean know like a big strong. Do well in the in the chest of the face and do all sorts of nasty stuff to you. But i didn't really think nine points per game or whatever. Stephen adams not going to be the one to get the andre office game and he just said cordless said i think the andrea was always used to be in this big huge guy dominating everyone with size and he got to the. Mba's like this dude is a seven one block a muscle. Who's really mean and i'm not. I'm not used to that. So i didn't know that about the interesting to hear that perspective and then defensively zach. How did the nba strike deondraye aiden. He made mistakes of timing and spatial understanding on defense that were so jarring and how obvious they were that they were really unusual in the nba. You just don't see guys recover to their man rolling to the like two seconds early and completely abandoned. The guard drives to the basket. But i remember seeing at the time. Those mistakes didn't bother me so much because he was trying. They showed somebody who had good intentions a good heart and he was nineteen inexperienced like they were the kind of mistakes you would expect that player thrust into a starting role on a bad team with really inexperienced guards that he was intent with deer their mistakes. You'd expect on to make with reps. I thought he would get better. I didn't think in the span of two years. You go from looking totally out of his depth to being a very clearly above average to very very good anchor of defense. That is an astonishing level of progress. And at the time zach to put an even finer point on this wild deondraye aid in is struggling. How would you characterize what is happening to luka doncic and trae young as professionals simultaneously. Well i mean both of them are blowing up and luca almost immediately becomes all nba level player and then in his second year goes toe to toe in the first round of the playoffs with the team that a lot of us picked to win the championship. The clippers who are just loaded with guys tailor made to defend him and looks you know is drawn. Comparisons to larry bird lebron james and magic johnson and looks like not just a great player. A fifteen time all star future top ten record-setting guy of all time and trae young looks like really really good. Not as good as luca. But you know twenty five and ten every night fulcrum of really good offense in the andrea and just kind of looks pretty good. Nba center like. That's not as exciting as those first two things at the time. So what do the sons do as the conversation around. The andrei aiden is getting pretty cruel in comparison. Thanks to those two guys. What are the sons do to fix. What is ailing him. How did they fill.

Sportswriter Zach Lowe on NBA Mid-Season Leaders
"Where. We are at the midway point of the nba season. And that means. I have questions for you about the utah jazz. I say the utah jazz to you. Right now what comes to mind a whole lot of threes there making these every time you know checkup jazz box score at my brain just glances over twenty two thousand from three leg. It's just nothing there number two in defense in number three or something in offense. They do profile as championship contender. Like they're the best team in the league by record right now. Are they the best team in the league to you. While the comparison that that's become sort of commonplaces they're they're the new sixty win hawks. The team that was built to win a lot of games regular season pretty ball movement side to side movement. You don't really have the star power to compete against lebron james when it comes down to it in the playoffs but i don't think they're just sort of blake a regular season flute so the way the jazz are playing right now. It reminds me not just of the hawks as you said but also a kind of mutant version of the houston rockets simply because of the sheer volume of threes. Does that comparison sounded all right and also does that comparison than invite the questions about what happens in the postseason. If shooting a bunch of threes doesn't go as well as it did in the regular season. That comparison does not ring true to me honestly just stylistically. They're so different. The volume of threes is similar. Like they are taking a houston. Daryl morey level volume of threes. But they play so differently. The other comparison is brad stevens. I think the first one to give voice to this is to two thousand fourteen spurs which is kind of like. That's that's i don't want to say that out loud well to an mba hipster fan to an emmy afficionados. Let's put it that way kinda sewer. What does that specific spurs team. What does that evoke in your memory. It almost has this sort of religion. Level reverend yes. Everybody loved watching that team. Anybody who was at games three to five of the finals that year when by the beginning of game four we were all looking at each other. Like all my god. They're just going to destroy the heat and to compare any team to where that team reached. It just feels like talking to a pitcher in the seventh inning of a no hitter. Something like you just don't want to say out loud but that is a comparison. People are making looked at jazz. Their undoing in the playoffs in in previous seasons was day would very much like the hawks. Actually day would get a lot of open threes and not make them and you could look at that and say well. We did everything right. We just didn't make shots. Which is what. Every hawks team including that one said after the playoffs. And so yeah. The three point volume is similar to the rockets. And that's a little scary. The team that this discussion has occurred in the context of is the lakers. As you said as it must be the defending champions and so when you look at the lakers right now. I want to get to lebron specifically in a second but just them without anthony davis and how much they've struggled most recently losing to these jazz and blow out. What is that revealing to you or confirming to you about what this team needs to actually content. I think like any team. They need their best players to be healthy. I i'm pretty low on the lakers panic meter because it's not just anthony. Davis who you know was first team all nba hill assures. Anthony davis is not like some borderline all the best players in the league. Dennis schreuder is maybe their third best player. I think kyle kuzma is kind of the claim that mantle disturbing might be their third most important player. Because he's the only other guy. With the exception of some frisky alex russo games entail. Norton tucker will get you some. You know some stuff done now and then but he's learned other on ball creator the other the other guys threat to score or pass to somebody else. Yeah you take them away and it's like oh my god. Lebron has to do everything and and you know he's probably getting a little tired and even though he'll never say it the only thing that will make my panic meter go above like three point. Five on a one to ten is if we get news. At davis's injury is lingering or more serious that we thought it was then if they're healthy in the playoffs yeah. Competition in the west is is probably better this year. Particularly if denver finds whatever gear they had going in the bubble. There's going to be a lot of really good teams in the west. You could get the one seed in the west and play the warriors. You could get to play the mad. I mean it's it's just every round is hard there. But yeah i i can't i can't get too worked up about it right now. Yeah the western conference meet

"More of a negative on because of the way that Zach Lowe puts it. Isn't it? Maura of a negative against the box and the Celtics. Like, why are people Trying to disparage what the Miami he did. Because they care about basketball. And they had no problem. Focusing on basketball for 24 hours for Three months, and that's the other thing, too. We? I thought we had decided That be extraordinary circumstances actually makes the teams that make it through the bubbles. And all extend this to hockey is well, I thought we were giving Mork credit. Because of what they had to go through instead of less. Credit. And I think back to win Shack had his comments. Shack wasn't in favor. Of doing the bubble thing he just thought Call it a day. No champion this year we'll pick it up next year. Because He didn't want a team like the Memphis Grizzlies. And what I said then and what? I think this is a product of now. Is Some people in any given sport, but I feel like basketball is where this is the most prevalent. The idea that Something would happen that is not predestined. You know, the MBA. Has Been a One of the least. Balanced leagues. Competitively. Right. You look at the same teams continue to pop up the same players right? It's been LeBron in the Warriors, basically for the last Five or six years. Now you get LeBron and you get somebody else. And then before that you had San Antonio and you have it is one of the it's probably the league that lends itself to dynastic teams. More than any other. And with that has Read it in environment where It is predestined. That certain things are gonna happen. And this year we decided that it would be one of the L A teams and it will be Milwaukee. That's what we decided. Now That's what I predicted. But I allowed and actually hoped For something else to happen. He kind of did. I love this story. The Miami heat. But that upsets people that have said some of the People in the MBA world because we were supposed to have LeBron vs Johannes were supposed to have this story lines of LeBron passing a torch shored Yana stay. I don't know what The narrative Woz. That everyone was hoping for. Don't do this, and especially, don't knock Miami. I don't want you. To put asterisks on either team. Lakers earned it. Miami earned it too. But if you're going to knock the Miami heat For being The best equipped Team. Oddly enough, Handle the bubble situation. And hang an asterisk on LeBron. Don't do this. There are probably a lot of reasons that the Eagles are struggling. One of them is that Carson went his playing badly. That's a definitive fact whether they're layups or not. He's playing bad. There's something in that decision making in that internal clock that he just doesn't. He just has never really fully gotten right. He's a player. I continue to think has a chance to be great. N.B.A. Owners Set a July 31 Restart, All in Florida
"Zach Lowe's senior writer for ESPN in host of the low post podcast. Zach. We're GONNA have basketball We think we're going to basketball. We'll see on July whatever July thirty first, or whatever, but yet knock on wood back on everything. Knock on heads. We stay healthy enough to have basketball. That's true I should never say anything definitively these days, but we are closer to having basketball because the NBA Board of Governors met on Thursday in voted twenty nine to one on a plan for the League to return. Return to play in Orlando at Disneyworld, twenty two teams, eight regular season Games in possible plan term, involving the eighth and ninth seeds We're GONNA have a lot of time to break down the logistics of all this how it's going to work from a public health perspective, weather not can work, but I wanted to bring you on today to talk about the basketball ramifications of this decision. Why do you think they went this particular route? Well. I think as you might expect. They were trying to balance money midst about basketball and love the game all at, but I think that it's mostly about. How can we maximize? That's why they didn't just take the sixteen playoff teams. They've tried to threadneedle of. Volume of games. Fairness to the teams that were in the eighth spot when when the seasons stopped in some potential excitement for play in teams, particularly the teams that were chasing Memphis in the western, mathematically had a decent shot, a much better shot than usual with seventeen eighteen games left to catch them. I want to talk about New Orleans and Portland particular, but I I wanted to ask why not think they went with six additional teams? Instead of four was America just clamoring for some wizards basketball, so watching the wizards. It's sort of like playing roulette. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose sometimes you leave the building weeping uncontrollably. The one thing wizards are not. This season is boring. Both those teams really wanted to play I think part of it was probably well. If we're going to have a plan in the West, it's GonNa Look Kinda dumb. If we don't have a plan in the East Lake of we just take the east team so I guess we gotta take someone. WHO's the least crappy east team left? Okay Washington. You get in well, then we have to balance it. So who's the next lease? Crappy West, okay, Phoenix urine I, and then suddenly twenty two. My opinion and I said this from the beginning, it should have been twenty. There's a hard quality gap after twenty I see no reason why these teams had essentially zero percent chance to make the playoffs are going through all this rigmarole adding seventy or eighty bodies. Me The reason why it doesn't really make sense to me is if you had told me okay, the western conference is going to have a plan tournament with three four five teams, and it's GonNa last a week or ten days and we don't want the Eastern Conference. Eight playoff team sands Washington just sitting there waiting I could buy that, but displaying tournament is not a tournament. It's one or two games. I just don't. It doesn't make any sense to me why those teams? They're not to pick on them. I just thought so get it. The PELICANS obviously were playing much higher level Oncein Williamson came back, and actually had a better point differential than Memphis for the season stopped Then you've got the blazers who are nearing full health right, which was due back after an injury marsh before all this happened. and. In hair and Nerkez the deck and Oh, I think he's hurt. His leg. Oh, his leg is right. Narco hits the deck. Which of those teams do you think is better situated to make it in Portland was also slated to have a decent easy scheduling. Everyone focused on New Orleans easy schedule because it was the easiest but Portland in San. Antonio were slated ABC. Schedules. I think you would have to go with New Orleans. Only because a they were playing really well already in. Be Like it's it's. It's exciting that use of Norwich and Zach. Collins are back in their. If their backup for these long layoffs, but they're also back after long layoffs in Nurkic in particular is coming off one of those traumatic leg injuries that it usually takes people a while to get maybe a year. Even a season at took Paul George Longtime for instance to get back to what they were before. So I think you'd have to go with new. Orleans but I would not underestimate portland.
Sources: NBA board expected to OK restart plan
"So Peter was rusty so I got a couple tweets here the N. B. is planning a Thursday vote of the board of governors with an expectation that owners will approve Adam silver's recommendation on a format to restart the season in Orlando sources tell ESPN owners of large are largely planning to pledge support for silver's final recommendation on a plan which teams expect to include invitations for twenty to twenty two teams to resume the season sources tell him in Ramona and Zach Lowe so so basically what this means is the owners are leaving it up to Adam silver to create the best possible plan and then they're going to get they have given his their full support to him and earlier you know some stories of leaked out about certain owners like Michael there's a story from Shonda said that Michael Jordan said that he didn't want his team participating in meaningless games which you know which with the help which basically they've all been under his wing but it's you know compared to what baseball is doing the owners trusts Adam silver to say this is the best possible plan this is the safe the safest thing we can do this would get the most bang for our Buck and to have the the best resolution to add an end to a regular season in the playoffs and will vote on this on Thursday and they're going to approve it because they trust Adams over and then they'll be a start date
All-Star Bam Adebayo Heats Up Miami
"That was the sound of Miami Heat Center Bam Outta Bio doing what he does best destroying souls the court now in its third year. Outta BIOS had a breakout season. Earning his first all star berth and leading the heat to a surprising start today. Espn Zach Lowe brings us the story of one of the NBA's rising superstars and tells us why not everyone saw this coming. I mean at times. It's Friday February fourteenth this is espn daily presented by ADT. Isak Meena thanks for doing this. Oh my pleasure. I like small third time. That means I'm not blowing it. Debbie's whatever the numbers say. I'm not blowing Zach Lowe is an NBA insider for ESPN. His latest piece is a profile of Miami Heat. All-star Bam Auto Bio Zach. We're coming up on the All Star game and one of the first timers this year is Bam Outta bio the Miami Heat Center. Who's in his third season has really emerged as a star? Why did you decide to write about him? I like to write one or two of these a year and I really top out at two. Because they're they're so time consuming and they take so under a port as you know but I like writing about people it's it's one of the easiest and hardest things to do right. I've come to find the sweet spot to really hit in the NBA for players is like between the fifteenth and fortieth best player in the league. Like the top fifteen guys. You're never you just don't get access to them unless you've known them for years and years and years and anything after thirty five or forty you run into like why am I reading about this guys. He that interesting for casual fans it has to be a player that I like is a player. I don't want to write about someone who's game. I just think is empty calories or whatever like I want to write about someone who I think is really good and maybe under appreciated. That's the kind of sweet spot of guy for me. So why do you like Bama's player? Big Guys who can pass are like my siren song. I I love big guys who can pass and when you watch this guy play defense even more than the defense into speed honestly is the rebounding Joe Harish for through and timed his. Jump Perfectly Blue Ray through the clouds for each verse defensive rebound in the afternoon he gets these rebounds where there's like four people under the rim jostling for position and they all jump and then from somewhere else flies in this gigantic guy with these hands that must be made of. I don't know whatever's the strongest possible material that you can make and the ball goes into this crowd of four guys and then this other guy. Just snatches it away like it's nothing. He makes the kind of place where they're winning. Plays and if they come at the right moment and a game. They're like a Gut Punch to the other team. So Zack you head down to Miami to spend time with Bam is friends and his family to get a sense of who he is. Where does history? Begin? It begins with his father leaving their family when his mother wanted to move to rule North Carolina and out of Newark New Jersey and they lived in a single wide trailer in the middle of nowhere in North Carolina and his mom as a cashier at like a meat. Grocery store kind of thing. Earning about twelve thousand dollars a year after taxes. And then all of a sudden she had a son who was twelve years old and six six and could dunk. What was it like for him? You know growing up in that trailer with his mom and no one else. You know when you're a kid you just don't think it's anything right like you don't think it's it's different or whatever. He had a sense that it was hard for his mom and that her schedule was crazy and that they didn't see each other much because their schedules didn't overlap the right way but he was happy at a lot of friends. You know it was fine but he did say by age thirteen or fourteen. You Begin to realize that this is a hard life that this adult like who you just kind of looked at. Is your mom like every other mom has a job and leaves the House. And all that that it's it's hard for her and that they don't have a lot and that she works really really hard for for what they have and that's what drove him. That's where he says he got his ambition and his anger and his desire to succeed was when he realized. My Mom's life is hard. She's tired a lot and I see that and I want to change that winded it. I become apparent to him and his family that playing basketball might be a viable career for him. Once he started playing organized basketball is not till like twelve thirteen fourteen. He picked things up really fast. And you had good natural instincts and good natural footwork by fourteen fifteen. He's on the map of all the big colleges and by the time he's junior mark godfried is helicoptering in to recruit to NC state in like Landon helicopter the field of their school. What was he like a high school player? A monster. An absolute monster have regular forty twenty games just like he was just huge. These teams in rural North Carolina. Couldn't do anything with six eight dude who could dunk? But he was incredibly unselfish. He loved playing point guard. He loved passing two people and keeping them involved. He didn't want to be the guy. Averaging Forty fifty game and putting up numbers there was a story about a guy on the end of the bench who finally got into game. All Bam did was get offensive rebounds and try to pass it in the week at score so Bam grows up in a trailer with a single mom and discovers. He's freakishly good basketball when it comes time to select a college. He chooses that. I'll take more time to University of Kentucky. How does that go first? So when you win big guys get to Kentucky and this was most famously done with Karl Anthony. Towns cal says this cool you can shoot threes like it's cool you can pass and like run the offense but like we have the Aaron Fox we have Maliki Monk. You don't get to do any of that here. My thing for him get and then. Let's really get you to play the way you're capable. You're going to set screens. You'RE GONNA post up. You'RE GONNA GET REBOUNDS YOU'RE GONNA play defense can do big man stuff because if you go to the NBA. You'RE GONNA have to that stuff well before you get to do the other stuff and so- Bam that's cool like you brought the ball up. You played point guard. Like you're not GonNa get to do that here. He would just say yeah. You know I'm just GonNa do my work like I trust cal. Cal has a record of getting these big guys drafted really hi? I'm working in practice behind. Closed doors on all the fancy stuff. Whatever it takes to win whatever cow says is good for me. I'm going to do and like I'm not going to get frustrated by it. So while he was doing all the big man's stuff and games he was working on his guard skills at practice. Yup in drills with Kenny Pain. Who's an assistant? Kentucky's very close to them. At night he would come back to the and do that. He would shoot jump shots which I. I don't know if you even shot a single three at Kentucky. I haven't checked. Even if scouts didn't see all of it to coaches and scouts would come visitor pick their brains about Bam and whether they should draft him. They would all tell them. Just be aware what you're seeing in. Games is not the full extent of what this kid can
Lowe: How two contenders went all-in at the trade deadline
"If we look at the actual deals with the contenders the Miami Heat and the and the clippers in terms of contenders moves. Yes Yup move forward at the deadline going forward. I think you see the Minnesota Timberwolves have made a big move forward. I'm not really sure. What the Cleveland Cavaliers have done? They made a big Zach. Lowe's point about the cavs. Good one at that price. Why aren't you making that deal? WAS CLEVELAND LIKE YOU HAVE A. You have a chance at a twenty six year old all-star to you know you have three months to answer to young team I think is really gonNA develop here in the next couple of days is unless there's a last minute deal that will just tell us about and you can use that again Thomson was not traded. That's right there was like six centers traded over this last three days. Tristan Thompson was not one of them. There has been a belief in the League and frankly his agent has been cleared. Paul's been clear. That Tristan is interested in taking a buyout. Because if you take AK- buyout even if he doesn't plan on being with the cavs you lose your bird rights and you can't be executed assigning trait but considering where they are now we're android is going to be their starting center. He has to play a a lot of minutes going down. The Stretch Tristan is not gonNA play not going to be able to improve his value. I think the chances of Tristan Thompson buyout have increased dramatically. That means if you're a fan of the Boston Celtics your ears perk way up right now. The Boston Celtics would be major in the market for such a good fit there. Right absolutely and the clippers who still have believe it or not. The clippers could could still use a center. I think if he becomes available over the clippers looking for more shooting at that position he could come there. But if you're a Boston Celtics Fan right now. Even though your team didn't do anything you are really picking a very close eye on Tristan Thompson. Because Tristan Thompson goes to the Celtics that could be the type of move that changes the balance of the Power Easter. Well first of all to finish up on the cavs. I would say this that they have had a hard time getting the rest of the League to think that Kevin Love worth what they think Kevin love this and they have been at Har. It's been they haven't been able to make a deal because of that. Well if you got Andre Drummond not for free but for a very small price. Maybe you let Kevin love go for a lower price than you thought you were going to. Maybe that's what it's about it's about this Andre Drummond and has a twenty eight million dollar player option which he may or may not pick up. I would advise him to pick it up. The CAVS are looking at like we did about twenty million cap room they. I don't think they could use that. Twenty million on the player better than Andre Drummond. So in a way this was a free agent. Move whether or not he keeps. He picks up the Optional Sarah. So let's move on from Andre Drummond. I WANNA get to Paul Paul. Can you go directly into your camera. Here and make a pitch to Tristan Johnson to talk to buy outs or the one player that can put the Boston Celtics Celtics over the top taking a couple extra less. Millions is work. But you don't know the answer is you. Don't take any money. They make the cavs by you out. Because they've they've they've just traded for your replacement but then you go sign and get more of my life could be part of a of another friend and these France table talk need a physical presence. A veteran leader champion.

Lowe: What Kawhi and the Raptors have done to the Warriors
"Has been the better team for almost this entire series. I realized that the warriors have injuries. There's no question about that. The warriors just took this game. The why Leonard's been the best player in the playoffs. The best player tonight. He's been the best player in the series. They got your Mendes defense. Zach lowe. This is you've tracked the raptors for so long. They're a team that usually in the moment under pressure, doesn't liver. They've been delivering for a couple of months now. And here they get it again. It's a different team. That's why the team that crumbled under pressure had Rosen and some other players who are under steam anymore. This team has a guy who's already a finals MVP. And I think if they pull this off takes his place among the greatest modern day playoff performers ever. I mean, I don't think that's hyperbole. They win. And he's the finals MVP again. And you know what they did tonight. That was so smart. Because just like the warriors struggle with its anyone besides clay or Steph in this game. I think the rest of them shot under under forty percent. The raptors get concerned when they have to take quiet they bought five minutes when they took him out in the second quarter five minutes, and they actually. Made the deficit less to me. That was so keep because down the stretch Steph looks gassed, he's playing forty minutes, who is thirty six minutes. And I know that doesn't sound like a lot. But at the end of the game it is, it's a big difference. So Nick nurse handle quite beautifully tonight. And I mean he was just so far and away the best player on our priced. He keeps rolling out these lineups at the start of the second and fourth quarter that have both Lowrey and Leonard on the bench and they're playing even or winning. And like if the warriors can't win those minutes, they are not gonna win Saqlain tonight. They did not like when I watched the warriors right now they look like a team that has never gotten comfortable in this series because they don't know who's playing games a game. Now he's that would Nick nurse before game three and he said, you know, it's kinda like a Geely game. I have experience in this goes gonna play in every game like we're fine. We didn't know Klay was gonna play until ten minutes where the game we're fine with that. But for the warriors. I'm I'm poppin and everyone of these huddles like my job is the sideline reporter on on the radio here. It's kind of like big peeping, Tom like sneak in there. And listen and I'm really sure with us of different comparison, but go ahead. Okay. But you you're just get in there and get listened into the huddles. Sometimes you see these, where's WALDO? LeBron James can only blame teammates so much after another bad Lakers loss
"Remember when I was pointing out all the Braun problems on defense. And that he just basically it wasn't that. He didn't care. It was that he didn't care any blamed other people for defensive lapses when it was his fault. And then I had all these Cleveland people come after me that actually covered the team. And it's weird when? Like media members come after you. And then I realized that you're just like you have no credibility whatsoever. And I can't even believe somebody credential credentials you to the stuff if you can't watch the game and see that he didn't play defense. So last night and into today. This was a remarkable these are new worlds new waters. However, you want to phrase it that we were entering because before when LeBron didn't play defense, or is indifferent or played against the worst offensive player that was a wing which has been doing now for two years. He's been doing this for a long time. He started off the season bad with LA. Nice little stretch since he's come back. He's been indifferent. He doesn't even get back. Sometimes he's been doing this for awhile. And when you look at his final stat line against Memphis. You like, oh, what are you talking about Rousseau? He's incredible. Again. That's how good he is. That's how good he is that he can actually put together these incredible games. But there's certain games the game against Philly, whereas final stat lines little bit better. Because it was almost like he was rushing to get to the end this never mattered because whenever he was doing in Cleveland, they still were threatened east. They came out of the east every single time. But this is. Is the rule? The number one rule all the stuff that we do if you win games. We don't really care. And when you lose we care and now the Lakers are outside of the playoffs. And with the remaining schedule looks really tough. I still think that this Lakers thing being disasters bit overblown because had he been healthy. And they have a better record during those eighteen games. He's off you. They're still in the mix certainly a playoff spot. Maybe not the four seed. But now that this is happening. And it's like wait is LeBron gonna miss the plastic, dude. He's going to miss the playoffs. And then it's gonna turn into like how many people can we blame here who are we going to blame? But to see him spotlighted on Twitter last night in get up this morning. And then everybody acting like this is new it does make me feel like I'm the best person listen to so you're welcome. But nobody was really doing this. Nobody else is really talking about it. And that's just my point is none of this changed except that they're not winning games. So to point this out like outlook what lebrons doing now? This isn't new this isn't new folks he's actually been better defensively for stretches with this year than he was last year with Cleveland, he was terrible last year with Cleveland, and if he wants to pay himself and it works and they get to the NBA finals. That's awesome. But I just this is a this is a great another great example of playing the results, which is something we all do I do it sometimes too. But with this LeBron thing, it was really funny watching the shows studio stuff this morning, going, wait a minute.
The Wizards are too slow to pick up their pace in loss to Mavericks
"Doesn't look like the wizards are going to win a championship this year. The wizards aren't just like bad start. Then look like a bad team, especially last night going up against the Mavericks who aren't exactly the class of the Western Conference. It didn't look good. They've got to wait Howard back. All the all though, he is a little bit hampered. But here's the things rose. They've kind of feels like this team has to make a move like it does feel like it, and the can't really trade John wall until July first because of the fifteen percent trade kicker Zach Lowe, explain for us in an article today are they gonna move Bill. Are they gonna move wall? And eat the fifteen percent like what you see the future of this season for the wizards will be this is a unique dynamic because the Washington Wizards having all. All star back core in in wall and Beal, but the chess moves that they bet on was Otto porter. They gave him a hundred million dollar contract. Solidified a wing position when that player does it become somebody that performs at an off star level. And now hampers you salary wise you bring into white Howard to help at the hoop be a finisher give you some rebounded. Give you some toughness. You have one of the Morris twins who provides that as well, but cohesive unit for some strange reason, they're not able to get on the same page as it relates to communicating defensively sacrificing for one another offensively, and it has shown me that the parks don't fit. I love the progression of Kelly Oubre. I like him as a young player. They have so many guys that just haven't been game changers for what you hope they do. And it's not only about talent. It's about cohesion.
Zach Lowe on Kawhi Leonard - NBA
"A lot of it doesn't have anything to do pertain to winning getting lebron james is a heck of a a get by the lakers i think the roster building outside of that has been for me a little bit peculiar usually you're trying to surround james with as much shooting instability as you can and it looks like they've actually gone just the opposite of that very little shooting and some unique personalities to incorporate alongside james because lonzo ball rondo all those guys they're not gonna handle as much as they normally handle because if they do in james doesn't have it then that makes no sense either so i found the james acquisition to be for them obviously a great day in laker history but as far as the rest of the roster construction it's been a little peculiar to me so the thought processes at the spurs will ultimately trade why to his destination being the lakers but not so fast as tom throw a bleacher report who joined freddie and fitz simons top choice for collides camp is not the lakers anymore ever since lebron james went to the lakers tune has changed lebron james is the guy and kawhi leonard guy essentially michael barry report david was that he doesn't want to play for the lakers second fiddles and lebron actually he does angeles clippers you know if you're a team like the philadelphia seventy sixers most confusing is if you're going to give up the farm for kawhi leonard and you know that he wants to make it back to california you know i'm going to be a real reluctant to put in marquel folsom that deal with the miami twenty twenty one pick that holds a lot of value being unprotected and who knows what happens with the mind eating a couple of years seventy sixers have the assets to get a deal done but if you can't guarantee that he's gonna stay long term that's really difficult at the end of the day i think i think kawhi leonard is going to end up in the philadelphia seventy sixers organization simply because i think colli leonard would make a lot of sense going east that's straight talk wireless nationwide coverage on america's.
