"Four inches and 30 pounds on him. Shoulder checks him out of the way, and then immediately pushes nurse out of the way to clear this giant space in front of the net and it's like these two guys have 6 inches and 40 pounds on Mars or so. And yet he won both those battles. Martinez's shot goes off skinner's arm bounces up in the air and then Marsha says there to slam dunk it in and it's like the only reason he's there to slam dunk it in is because he just pushed two guys there twice his size out of that area so that he could be there. Super impressive individual effort by Marshall. Yeah. And he was one of a number of guys that contributed meaningful ways in this series. And that's the last thing takeaway from this and got out of the differences between these two teams, right? Like Euler's for all the talk about even their bottom 6 depth or whatever, what really let them down here was their top 6 wingers, where they just didn't do nearly enough. I believe between Hyman, nugent Hopkins, Yamamoto, and Evander Kane, they combined for two goals in this series. One was like a goal to make it for nothing. In game four and another just kind of bounced in off of Zach Hyman, didn't actually even do anything in front of the net. And considering all the opportunities, McDavid Andres had a way to create, that's not good enough, whereas with Vegas, not only did they get contributions from everyone, but they also showed no discernible weaknesses as well. They were able to kind of play in various different game environments and forms. And so as we look ahead to the west final, that's what makes it such a riveting matchup for me amongst many other reasons is that the stars are much more suited to kind of hang in that way where they're getting contributions from a bunch of guys up and down the lineup.

"About Leon and Connor all day long, right? And even as much as we talk about dry silence, probably not enough. I think he is a great example of an exceptional player that has gotten better. He's now into the peak years of his career, and for me, it's one thing, and it's his skating. Because he's such a, he's an enormous guy, right? And so he's never going to be light on his feet like McDavid, but if you can visualize like this, you know, like when he has the puck in the corner and he's kind of doing a one man cycle. He's so much quicker. He came out of the corner a couple of times like he just dusted in LA checker. And I was like, wow, I don't remember him doing that. Like to me, that's another part of his game that's gone another step. He's an amazing player. He's so good. If Connor McDavid somehow wasn't in the league, like, you know, dry Seidel would be, I know he takes, you know, he gets help from McDavid but of course he does. Yeah. But he would be talked about in a different space. Dry side would. Like in conversation as the best in the league. Yes, right? In that conversation. Yeah, he would be in that maybe in that group of players. I agreed. And the oilers. Sorry, they lost 5 games in regulation since January 11th. That's half a season. 37 games now. They've lost 5 games in regulation. Yeah. I mean, Tom gazelle asked me on Edmonton radio this morning as we're recording on Thursday. As to whether or not I thought the orders were getting enough respect across the league outside of Edmonton. And I feel like they are. I do. Look, I mean, again, it's McDavid. It's dry sidle, but there are so many good players having wonderful years, nugent Hopkins, Zach Hyman, their goaltending looks like it's kind of coming online here of late with Jack Campbell playing better and stew skinners had a really good year.

"But it's the next game that I always, I always say that gets you back on board. This team tends to jump back on the horse after a tough loss and we'll talk about that game shortly, but it wasn't a bad game and so on. It wasn't like a blowout. It was really tight, checked game and I thought it was okay, but you know, losing the two points. So I suck. And obviously, you know, the 50th win of the season had to be pushed off till obviously Saturday against Detroit. Well, yeah, to piggyback on what you said and I think if there's a positive to take away, it seems like with this team, you know, we always talk about having the shutdown pair and you put your best defensive players against their best offensive players. And it seemed to me some of the best plays that were made defensively in the zone on McDavid were Connor Clifton and Derek forbert and Brandon Carlo and it wasn't this necessity of well, you got to put mcavoy and lindholm up against that line. And I think that's going to be great come playoff time where you may not get the matchups that you want in terms of, especially if you're on the road, getting your best defensive unit out against their best forwards. But knowing that those guys can play the scheme. I mean, like you said, it was a game plan, right? It was the game plan was push them wide, you know, don't fall for the body moves. Don't fall for the move. Stay in your lane. And I thought guys like Clifton and forward did a really nice job on their own zone doing that. And so understanding that this team can be more than just put out your top pairing because that's where the talent is, you have less talented players working the scheme and working it well. So I think that's I think that's going to be great for the playoffs going forward. And yeah, like you said, it was just, you know, we give them a hard time, but Edmonton's halfway decent team. I mean, if you let them hang around, you give them enough opportunities, especially on the power play. You know, if it's not McDavid, it'll be Zach Hyman, or it'll be, you know, the other guy there, a dry side of the German. So they got guys that can make plays. And, you know, I think in both of the last games, the Edmonton and the Detroit game, you know, hockey's such an interesting sport to where some nights, the passes are just an inch and a half off. The shots are just an inch and a half wide. And when it comes to a game of inches, I think that, you know, they just had one of those nights where the passes weren't crisp. They weren't on the tape. They were just an inch and a half off. And that could be from too much rest. I could be from lacquer rest. That could just be from a tough day or whatever it is, but those games are going to happen. So he said, certainly not the end of the world. You're going to lose, lose to a team, you're not familiar with, that's not in your conference, like Edmonton, you know, and put your head down and come back at it a couple nights later. The one thing that's tough about it is the traditionally, not traditionally, but this season, the blossom bruins have been a really impactful third period team with a plus 48, I believe, is there is there a goal differential in that particular 20 minutes.

And so he's going to be back up top that list, but yeah, it's very interesting. Whoever does get to play with forsberg and Duchenne potentially that's going to be a great spot, right? So certainly some of the monitor. You know, you mentioned Barry there. Let's include Evan Bouchard, who's probably owned a lot of leagues, right? Because even before he was still playing, but I did want to note that in the four games since the Barry trade, he's got three assists, 21 shot attempts, which are behind just Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman on the team. And he's playing 21 minutes per game in that time, but here's the stat for you. In on their power play opportunities, he has been on the ice with Connor McDavid for all but 11 seconds of Connor McDavid's power play usage. So he's just stepped fully into that role. They are just leaning on that top RA unit as heavily as possible. And it's a great spot to be. I know, I think he had all three of those assists in one of those four games and he hasn't had anything in the rest of them, but you're telling me you're going to be out for like a 100% of the time on a historically great top power play unit. You are going to sleep walk your way to significant point totals. And so and that's not to diminish Bouchard himself because I think he's a fantastic player and he's a great fit for that. And he'll be able to optimize that as well and maximize his opportunity, but yeah, it just in terms of usage if anyone's like, oh, I'm kind of a bit underwhelmed so far because three out of those four games he didn't give me anything. I'm all about it because he's clearly going to just load up on points the rest of the way. Man, such a good call on a kind of slip by rare and I'm glad that you brought him up because this was a pleasure that I actually took a lot of flack for in my rank, things at the start of the season. Started on nurses going ahead of him and I thought, no, this is Bouchard. Bouchard's for the guy that you want, save, and save that pick, grab somebody else and get Bouchard a little bit later on. But unfortunately, you know, he just hasn't really had a good season, but last year I thought he was terrific, especially in the playoffs. I thought he was a real driver offensively and I thought he was really good on the power play, but of course Tyson beer getting that power play time and Darnell nurse from here and there. So yeah, I have three assists the other night two of them were on the power play.

Bush Now he is senior adviser to the center for strategic and international studies So Doug thank you so much for being with us I have a suspicion that you may tend to agree with mister Cohen More than ten to agree I fully agree Bill's absolutely right What we've been doing and it's a huge mistake on our part is essentially deterring ourselves We keep talking the president's talked about World War three I think James He's talked about World War three What a mistake That gives Putin leverage He can then threaten he'll go to nuclear weapons he'll nuke us whatever And it'll stop us from helping the Ukrainians The truth of the matter is there may be a good case for not sending them aircraft I don't agree but general Todd Walters who is the supreme allied commander in Europe the commander of our forces in Europe He doesn't think it'll help him much Now the president of Ukraine and mister zelensky thinks will help him a lot But there are other weapons as well We're not sending patriots We say it'll take too long to train I don't know that it would I don't think the Ukrainians think it would We're not really sending all the things they've asked for And what does it take The presidents of Ukraine goes to Congress and says I need all this stuff And we say well it will cause World War three Well why would it cause World War three Does mister Putin want to blow up his entire country in a nuclear war It's not going to help him build a Russian Empire That's for sure So that's about arm movements What about the no fly zone Do you agree with President Biden on that that that really could have a direct conflict An armed conflict between U.S. forces NATO forces on the one hand and Russian on the other Well I'm not as enthusiastic about a no fly zone It seems to me that if we were to provide the Ukrainians both were aircraft and with high level air defense systems to knock their aircraft out of the sky then you'd effectively have a kind of no fly zone Why should we take on Russian jets directly the Ukrainians can do a pretty good job themselves So you also written that comment about the possibility of creative diplomacy We talked with another former Secretary of Defense He's Leon Panetta yesterday about what needs to be done to really make progress on the diplomatic front This is what he had to say about that.

which runs about $470 billion in assets He is the manager of the Scottish mortgage investment trust where he's generated returns of over 1700% during the past two decades That fund is now about 24 billion dollars You know we've been talking about mostly U.S. companies for a while Let's talk a little bit about what you see that's attractive overseas In fact you've recommended Chinese and other emerging markets before other emerging stocks before tell us a little bit about the mindset you have to have to invest in these or is it the same process no matter what country you're investing in Fundamentally Barry it is the same process But of course the standards of proof need absolutely to be there And we were talking earlier about the important of science and academia Now what I think the corollary of that is is what's critically important to us in determining where we are searching where we're looking for Is that we need to see evidence of if you like rising educational standards those rising academic stars in the markets that we're talking about And we need those to be if you like in charge of society So I've always felt very comfortable uncomfortable I don't know about you with this label emerging markets It's always been made off of some countries which emerged 2000 years ago And then retreated with countries that are genuinely moving forward And I never liked at all in particular The whole brick discussion That used to happen I think the difference is between Brazil and Russia And to quite a large extent India and China are profound on the level we're talking about With their some extraordinary brains within Russia But I do not think they are central to the economic system based through the tiers on comparative exhaust extortion And energy production So I think you start with making that But at the company level and I found this intriguing we make exactly the same discussions We may have exactly the same set of ten questions that we asked the companies in these areas And we're looking for the similar outcomes that we have in America or to some extent in Europe So let's talk a little bit about Europe which has been lagging for what seems like forever or is Europe ever going to reach a point where it can outperform or am I being too optimistic to expect that any time in our lifetimes I think the real issue in Europe is much more about scaling I think there are plenty of decent companies Some outstanding companies One of my worst miscalculations since of a mission over the years has been that I got very annoyed By way back in time those tendencies the MH of LVMH buying the LV part because it was the LV part that I'd buy it I felt the Monsieur arno had managed to actually rather aggressively take over LV and plainly he's done a fantastic job and his colleagues have done a fantastic job in LVMH and we've owned caring and Ferrari for much the same point of view But I think the real failure has come in.

Bloomberg opinion on Bloomberg radio Bring you news comments and insights from Bloomberg opinions worldwide team of editors and columnists I'm June grosso Coming up on the show a controversial airline merger may face regulatory challenges Plus why risk-taking will prove vital in keeping the economy strong But first the child tax credit has become a sticking point in Congress as President Biden's build back better Bill has stalled Some have argued against it others like Catherine Edwards economist at the Rand corporation and professor at the party ran graduate school argued that child tax credit is vital because it addresses the unique economic reality many Americans experience every day She recently wrote about it for Bloomberg opinion You write that government programs tend to put people in boxes explain why Well it's a strategy of targeting and directing resources to those that are determined to be either most in need or most worthy of need It's not enough to say you know the United States does not have a cash welfare program for people who are in poverty But it has several forms of assistance some cash some not cash for people who have low income and meet some other determination of eligibility such as being disabled being elderly And in very long cases being a single mother People's incomes can vary from month to month how does that affect getting government aid I talk about this in the article we don't have infinite resources We want to direct them to those who we think are deserving of them and are in need But when it comes to income that's not a fixed point People's incomes vary month to month and in fact over the past 40 years economists have found overwhelming evidence of what they call income volatility Which is the variation in income from month to month That happens across the income distribution It happens to families from the top of the income Strata but it also happens at the bottom which means you could see a 50% swing in income for a month to month But what makes it difficult in its interaction with government programs is that the lower your income is on average the more these swings will have you dip above and below the poverty line And indeed it kind of interacts with how we often misconceive poverty that it's much more of a transient state than it is a permanent state In fact half of all poverty cells and within a year I found it really interesting You wrote that for most children the poorest their parents will ever be is on the day they're born Most parents are porous on the day that a kid is born because they're the youngest when you look at someone's earnings over their lifetime starting from maybe when they had their first job as a cashier when they're 16 to the last job when they have when they're 65 they're earnings grow as their experience does in the workplace And so by the time they hit their 50s and 60s that's when most people see the peak of their earnings but when they have kids is when they tend to be at the start of their careers So that's why the child poverty rate is always higher for children under four So when you add the income volatility with the fact that government benefits often are delayed what's the result The result is that we don't always reach the children and need I mean anyone who applies for unemployment insurance in the pandemic can talk about this anyone who is applying for social security while the office is field offices have been closed for nearly two years can talk about this Anyone has ever applied for.

"I mean, they and you know what They look like If that Syriza's is a game like last night, Montreal's gonna beat them period end of story words that I never thought would come out of my mouth. I mean, honest to goodness. But if they if that Syriza's like they have to skate, they have to keep going at it and what should scare them. And I know we have a lot of leave fans listening. In the area. More in particular. Across the river is is Cary Price look like Cary Price and not carry thrice. I started calling him carry thrice because of his propensity to give up three or more goals. And you know what? He looked like Carey price last night and that that should scare them. That's just scare them immensely. You know, when they already got enough, the pressure of being well made, believes in their head and everything. But, Mac, I want to ask you this is I've been waiting to ask you this all day. If that was you, and that was Corey Perry. Would you have asked him to dance? Because fully knows getting ah lot of heat, like from who Everybody knows it was inadvertent, even fully know, said it was in it from hose again. He From hockey people hawking a lot of hockey people don't know. Don't know. Don't save me like real hockey. People like like like that's a good question was back. People that know the game that because what happened there, and I broke it down earlier is Corey Perry and and Feli. No squashed everything rate there, and even the way Perry sort of like took You took his up becoming, either it squashes everything. It's smoldering the fire. It's whatever like that. Nothing builds up to it. You don't have Cory if Corey Perry wouldn't wouldn't have done that, and it made a bigger deal of it, depending how it is now, if Cory period of the smartest thing and who can you know even it looked like got a few shots. And because it sort of looked like he felt bad, and he started wanted to get the golf gods karma, But, er the golf gods, the hockey gods. Carmen back too much, you know, like To me. That was the greatest thing Corey Perry is ever done as a team player, and I'm I'm exaggerating because he's got to stay on the cops and memorial cups and stuff. But you know what? I mean? He's known as sort of, you know, selfish player and right. You know what I mean? So that wasn't around move that was a respectful The way that they did it. I liked it and I'd like to ask. You know Jody Shelley was on it. It shall not work because hack of a job Who's one of the like the last of the gun slinger, enforcer, guys and stuff, But I just think it just quelled everything down. And then you look Um, because they got the revenge. You know what I mean, like there's nothingto. There's nothing to drive off. And you know what the big thing is Shawn? No fans in Canada. So the fact that there's no fans there that you can't that and that's why Toronto is probably going to suffer more. They play to perimeter where I saw last night. I'm sorry for Are you trying to fans? But I saw that I don't think you can win with the Mitch Marner because he's doesn't have that jam that I see. Like a nick Backstrom have when it comes down to it. Zach Hyman's great inside guy, but they got too many perimeter guys. They're gonna if they're gonna like you said last night wait for that power play and you know Austin. Matt is a great player. But, you know, is he still in which immature to the facto understand that he can't do it all himself and who's going to support him? So I could be totally wrong. This leadership in the fact that you got Joe Thornton in the room and stuff like this might Help. It has way more than it hurts. So Wolf. I know what this team's all about, anyway, so we'll talk more playoffs. Obviously, Boston Washington going at it there the overtime teams, but we're gonna take a break here got to pay the bills. Could Crosby say? I mean, he could. He can say whatever you want. But come on, Rob. Perception is everything in life back in the day, bitch every day. Both the clutching and grabbing, clutching and grabbing in the games, killing the game, and he just kept talking about it talking about what happened. All that kind of thing was taken out of the game. So these guys can make a difference. Voices are going, they're strong. And you don't think that if Stars in the game, especially or everybody is a group comes up and says, Hey, we need to change this, then they're going to do it. Instigators. W GR Sports Radio 5 50 MSG Sabers win last night. And Michael Hauser, just making an unbelievable name for himself. There's no better story for me right now. In the NHL and no player I've rooted harder for then. In this particular player. We'll talk about it and just a minute. You know, way talk about the star players, you know, stepping up and speaking up when I brought that up yesterday, Rob And I just I watched the video over. And over and over and I've heard some very compelling arguments. For Tom Wilson, Okay? On air and jumped on his back. You know, like that's hockey or there was a former player turned executive Athletic wrote some stuff and I'll try to Here it is here you have AH, long time player turned NHL executive. I didn't think it was as bad as everyone said it was. I guess. Maybe because I wanted to see it. I blew it up in my own mind. And what was in my mind was a lot worse. Former player here. Was going to time how long that entire incident took. You would swear that we had World War five. Um, It's one of those blank oven. I things and I saw all kinds of Bs things on social media. Um, in NHL team executive. I'm really surprised on this one. I thought this was an opportunity for the league to make some sort of statement. They're lucky that Panera didn't get seriously hurt there. Um, When was the last suspension in the league? Was it Edler Hyman, Vancouver, Adler was suspended two games for knee Toronto, Zach Hyman. Um Which happened during the course of the game. Anyway, I'm reading a quote here. That doesn't matter. So you're getting you're getting my point here. You're getting my point. So What did I miss? What am I missing here? I wrote R P. I think there's there's arguments on both sides here. I think there's You can put a great argument up either way on this one. And you know, whatever way you want to believe. I doubt you're gonna Change people's minds. But a I got a couple things here. I just I look that okay, the policing on the ice. You watching successful teams out there? The teams would be well, they have guys like this. I said last night. You don't see anybody taking cheap shots that Backstrom and over yet there. They go play their game because they know All right. You go to all the teams were doing Well, Look at that. Vegas. They get Ryan Reeves out there. You know these guys? It might not have to do it all the time. But they kind of put something out there that hey, don't mess with these guys, and they allow him to go play. Maybe on that on one hand team should start looking at that and saying OK, these teams they're successful because they They do play that kind of game. They do have one of those guys or two of those guys on the team that can still play the game. I'm not talking just the guy to quote fight. I'm talking to guys that won't play the game as well. It. Also can, you know address situations which Eyes attend a room for a lot of guys out there. Maybe the league's should start looking at that going head. Maybe we need something like that. Rob, Let me ask you one thing before well low, and that's rich is about to say something He's thinking. Listen, I don't know I don't have anything to say. Disabled this any further. I think, you know, I'm really disappointed. And I'm gonna tell you right now we've We've gone through the last five years here on the instigators. We've gone over guys that have been suspended and I have I'm always on the other side. I'm usually on the other side, saying, you know what guys that are being hit. Need toe, you know, protect themselves and all this kind of stuff in this situation. This in particular this player In particular is a predator. He's dangerous. He's nasty. Now. Here's the thing I actually love the way he plays. I love the way Tom Wilson plays if he was playing back 15 20 years ago. He wouldn't be playing the same way. I wrongly believe that it's going to be dealing with guys that are just as big and guys that air Quite frankly, as tough or way tougher. Okay? He would be he would be Not worried about the player safety. He's worried about the guys on the other team that I'm going to tell you right now. They're coming after him. They're gonna come. They're gonna come after him, and they are going to try and hurt him. And once you feel that once, Tom Wilson feels that then all of a sudden this little sucker punch and stuff like that that starts to kind of he starts to have to think about his actions right now. Think about his actions. He is a six ft. 4 £225. You know, he's the ultimate power forward in the National Hockey League. Right now, we're really and he's very He's a very good hockey player. That's why I was drafted in the first round of Washington years ago. He plays on the top line with some of the best players in the world. Okay, he is a player, but he's also extremely dangerous. He's dirty and he's dangerous. And right now in the new NHL, because this is a new NHL. All of those policemen are now out of the game. They're not there anymore. No, but really, you don't have to have just the policeman this and you just said this guy can play the game. This guy could play the place on the top line. And you said Yes. So there's guys that can do that. And still Manage. What he has to manage on the ice to give his guys that space. So, Yeah, the point I get to trying to see what other teams realize that there's not a player in this conference. This season and even in others that Tom Wilson even blink an eye at Because I'm getting from going to places. This is the point. Rob.

"zach hyman" Discussed on The Ray & Dregs Hockey Podcast
"Is no code. I've never been handed a copy of the code. I don't know what it is and you play in a long time by the way with some tough dudes. Yes you feel the code like there's a sense of what it is but there is no code there are no. There is no handbook and so the people that are arguing about it online and make lots of noise about it. They know even less about it than i do because they weren't there and they've never been there now. I understand the emotionality of the response. Ettler hit was bad and he got suspended and toronto's not happy because they lose zach hyman and their their guy is hurt so they're looking for retribution. If if the league doesn't want that to happen. The only way i can think it can happen is to make the suspension in her directly involved with the team that that incident happens. So of alexander gets two games or four games in a normal season. He would edward got two games. The next two games have been against somebody else at toronto doesn't get any any satisfaction from that the cannot slough would lose adler four games against chicago and pittsburgh or whoever it was if it's against toronto. Maybe that matters a little more. Because i cannot be more clear on this what i think. The code is what A player today thinks the code is a player on another team of today. Thinks the code is is all different. Yeah it's different because there is no written down of this has to happen. Do you think you should have skated away. Do you think alexander should have just said look. I'm not fighting. you don't need to fight you. i. I served my two game suspension buzz Yes but it's easy to say. Because i'm sitting here on my coach when you're in that moment you feel this unwritten code like you feel it again and so he probably felt well first of all he probably looked up and saw wayne simmons and went off for crying out not him. Yeah because simmons could really do a number on and to simmons credit. I think there was a point there where he kind of thought in the fight. I mean i could be wrong. But i thought in the fight simmons what that's enough and any stopped like he could've kept going and he did. He's clear he's fighting a guy that doesn't fight. I think ever felt. I have to take this fight. I i think it's wrong as i sit here as long retired blair but in the game. It's different it it just is. I wish i wish i could explain it. I wish i could explain it more clearly. But that's when you're in it. It's different than when you're viewing it from the perch which we do we. We all do it media in general. Of course the other thing that was a head scratcher me was the suggestion that okay well if there needs to be a fight than needs to be someone other than wayne simmons. It needs to be closer to alec sadler non fighter. Well i mean who does that. Is it like ilya mckay of like. Are we going to be happy. Just somebody some random. Toronto maple leaf fighting alexander in honor of of zakheim and that doesn't make any sense to me either. It doesn't and here's another reason why it doesn't because then people are going to look at wayne simmons and say. Why didn't you address this hunter percent and so what wayne supposed to go out and say while he's not really in my weight class and these four guy like it doesn't work like that it's.
