Well, Jonathan Connor McDavid is, of course, only one player on this Edmonton Oilers team. Who else has really been contributing to this playoff run so far? What else have been the keys to their getting as far as they have? Well, that's just it. And we talked earlier about how one player can't really overcome a decrepit team around him. This is the farthest thing from a decrepit team. The oilers have some weaknesses, but they have just superb tear once at the top end. I mean, it starts with Leon draisaitl after McDavid. Ordinarily, during the regular season, dry Seidel and McDavid were on separate lines. They're playing together now. The reason for that primarily, aside from the fact that it has worked, was in the first round, Leon draisaitl was taken down by Mikey Anderson and he's been playing on what we believe to be a sprained ankle since. They had to have them at the wing because you have to skate a lot more at center than you have to skate on the wing. And he's ridden wing for Connor McDavid before, and their chemistry superb. There may not be a better player in the offensive zone than Leon draisaitl in terms of just pure passing and shooting. They've got the kind of supporting cast up front. They haven't had in ages. Guys like Evander Kane, who came in at mid season, Zach Hyman, who assigned the summer. And Ryan nugent Hopkins, who's been there forever, but really hasn't had any peers. Now they've got three of those guys, and it's made all the difference. Mike Smith, their goaltender, you know, he's 40 years old. He's a fantastic story. Coming into the playoffs, I was a little bit skeptical of Smith. He gets very hot and very cold. So I've seen him be very good and very bad, but he's been very good for most of this playoff run. He's bounced back from some really difficult place. You know, he kind of gave away game one to the kings in the first round with an atrocious giveaway. And he came back and responded with some of the best hockey he's played in Edmonton. So you really have to respect his resilience. But the other key I'd say for the oilers has been the coaching staff. They changed coaches at mid season, something that GM Ken Holland has never done. They brought up Jay woodcroft, who was a very up and coming minor league coach. They brought up his defensive coach, Dave Manson, and those two guys have worked wonders. The oilers are a different 5 on 5 team under Jay woodcroft. They're much more competitive. And Dave Manson's kind of earned a reputation as a defenseman whisperer because of the way he's developed the oilers prospects. He has found new levels from not a pedestrian defense, but one that's really not that remarkable, especially with Darnell nurse fighting through injury. He's found contributions from guys like Brett kulak, Tyson Barry, players who were regarded as somewhat one dimensional. So a lot is how to go right for the oilers to get this far. And it's a big story beyond Connor McDavid. This matchup against Colorado for the neutral hockey fan at least is absolutely mouthwatering. I mean, you have two of the league's most exciting and fastest, most skilled teams squaring off against each other. And they treated us to an old school shootout of a game in game one on Tuesday night with abs hanging on to prevail 8 to 6. Jonathan, what do you think the series will ultimately hinge on? When I look at Colorado, the player who's frightens me the most with due respect to Nathan McKinnon is kale macar because will kill macar has done this season. I don't know if he's going to win the Norris trophy, if not he'll be one or number one or number two. He's a phenomenal player and to me he's every inch the equal of McKinnon. Those two are the key point for Colorado. The differences that Edmonton has extreme skill up front. So you look at guys like Nathan McKinnon. And Gabriel lambda skug, the oilers can go toe to toe with those guys. Nazem kadri. You look at what Colorado has on defense, guys like kale mccart and Devin taves. Edmonton doesn't have anybody like that. Darnell nurse is the closest piece. And he's playing through injury. He's not a 100%. So to me, it's really going to depend on whether Colorado's defense can tip the scales of the McKinnon McDavid battle is going to be fantastic, but that McCarthy is saying that's something that Colorado has that pairing at something Colorado has that Edmonton just doesn't have an answer for that I see on paper. You mentioned McDavid and McKinnon. In those two guys you have two former number one overall picks, generational talents, arguably the top two offensive players in the league. What's also somewhat similar games as well, right? Both guys, it's just all about speed and skills simultaneously. Does this feel like a potential rivalry of the future sort of centered around those two superstars? Yes and no, because it's easy to look at McDavid McKinnon and kind of go, oh, well, this is the new Crosby Ovechkin. The problem there is when it was Crosby and Ovechkin, it was Crosby and Ovechkin with McDavid McKinnon. You have to throw auston Matthews in there too. Who's very much in that same weight class as a heavyweight offensive forward. But the cool thing about McKinnon and McDavid is like you said, they both go out with speed. Matthews is an unbelievable goal scorer. So as much as he's in the conversation and kind of makes it a three way battle instead of a two way battle, he's a different kind of player. And we'll see if Edmonton Colorado stick with a power versus power matchup where McKinnon and McDavid are playing each other all the time. I think Edmonton is going to try and get away from that as much as they can. They like to double shift McDavid. But that kind of speed, I can't think of a forward match up to that compares. As a rivalry, I think it's somewhat lacking because they're not playing each other in division play during the year, which makes it a little harder with Crosby and Ovechkin. You got more regular season matchup, so it was a little easier to.

Bush Now he is senior adviser to the center for strategic and international studies So Doug thank you so much for being with us I have a suspicion that you may tend to agree with mister Cohen More than ten to agree I fully agree Bill's absolutely right What we've been doing and it's a huge mistake on our part is essentially deterring ourselves We keep talking the president's talked about World War three I think James He's talked about World War three What a mistake That gives Putin leverage He can then threaten he'll go to nuclear weapons he'll nuke us whatever And it'll stop us from helping the Ukrainians The truth of the matter is there may be a good case for not sending them aircraft I don't agree but general Todd Walters who is the supreme allied commander in Europe the commander of our forces in Europe He doesn't think it'll help him much Now the president of Ukraine and mister zelensky thinks will help him a lot But there are other weapons as well We're not sending patriots We say it'll take too long to train I don't know that it would I don't think the Ukrainians think it would We're not really sending all the things they've asked for And what does it take The presidents of Ukraine goes to Congress and says I need all this stuff And we say well it will cause World War three Well why would it cause World War three Does mister Putin want to blow up his entire country in a nuclear war It's not going to help him build a Russian Empire That's for sure So that's about arm movements What about the no fly zone Do you agree with President Biden on that that that really could have a direct conflict An armed conflict between U.S. forces NATO forces on the one hand and Russian on the other Well I'm not as enthusiastic about a no fly zone It seems to me that if we were to provide the Ukrainians both were aircraft and with high level air defense systems to knock their aircraft out of the sky then you'd effectively have a kind of no fly zone Why should we take on Russian jets directly the Ukrainians can do a pretty good job themselves So you also written that comment about the possibility of creative diplomacy We talked with another former Secretary of Defense He's Leon Panetta yesterday about what needs to be done to really make progress on the diplomatic front This is what he had to say about that.

"Is my good buddy Ryan Lambert. What's going on? Oh, it's a busy day in the hockey world, huh? Yeah, every day is a busy day in the hockey world, especially lately, it feels like also joining us is our colleague at EP rate side. Jack Fraser Jack what's going on? Nothing much, excited to talk some Canada, Germany with you guys. That is what we're deep diving and breaking down today. For sure. Here's the deal. So I actually woke up this morning not expecting to do a show today. And then the oilers went ahead and fired their coach and made changes that seemed inevitable, although I thought that they'd made staved it off with some of their recent results, but obviously the last two games kind of expedited that process. And we are going to kind of just talk all the way through and do a quick reaction show and try to get this thing up and out tonight while it's still topical and still relevant. So let's unpack the full situation. And I'll let you go first because you did write about this on our site and it's sure still pressure on your mind. Start us off with just kind of your first thoughts on the move. How do we divvy up the blame for this? Because obviously it's such a convoluted situation where you can't just necessarily be like, all right, well, I got rid of Dave tippett, it's onwards and upwards from here. There's clearly still other personnel issues. But what should we feel about this move in terms of especially trying to salvage the rest of this season? It's interesting because I don't think given the oilers were Dave tippett was the ideal coach for that group. You know what I mean? You don't look at you think of Dave tippett as a defense first kind of a coach. And you look at everybody on that roster and with the exception of maybe like Brian nugent Hopkins and Zach Hyman and you say, I don't think of really any of their forwards as being like, you know, 200 foot guys. And then obviously the defense, the only guy that you would say, oh, you know, his reputation is, you can trust him in his own zone is Chris Russell, who's very old now. So they just went up and got a bunch of puck moving defensemen. They have, you know, obviously one of the most dynamic puck moving forwards, they have a guy who in lean on dry cycle who is all finish just puts the puck in the net really effectively. And not really conducive to the Dave tippet style. I would say. But of course, the real reason David got fired is the goaltending stakes. And Mike Smith gave up 8 goals on 58 shots the last two games out, both of them at home. They're like 5th in the division in points percentage. You know, two games in which they themselves scored one goal combined. Correct. Yeah, that's the other that's the other thing to say is they were heavily reliant on the power play. What a generous description of the defenseman they brought in. They brought in a bunch of puck movers..

"Co you must be nineteen and remember stay cool and always play responsibly so we literally can talk about whatever we want and lock. The nfl is big right now. I lost her survival pool a couple of weeks ago. Pick tennessee Wasn't such a good pick. So now i have limited interest in the the Survivor pools. But i am dialing in more to the super bowl odds. I don't think anybody is shocked by the tampa. Bay buccaneers plus five hundred. The buffalo bills buffalo was a little shaky early on in the regular season. Those really good aren't they. They look to be really good. We'll see anyone in that group that catches your eye like the green bay packers and plus eleven hundred. I feel like marley. Green bay should be a little bit better odds than little higher. I think they're a better team. Anyone catch your eye well. I didn't know the rams were as good as they are. And so. so there's there that's who i'm going to say you know like arizona's off to this amazing start but i don't know i just like the rams i i think there's a better chance detroit doesn't win a game. How long have they saw long time. Like the lions terrible since forever. Yeah usually get hammered. Every time he admitted your browns fan right. And now i mean it's it's fashionable be browns fan. I i like the look. I'm a bit surprised the kansas city. She's not a bit a lot surprised ebbing. They struggled pretty early in the regular season. I thought they'd find their way and they just don't seem to be finding their way. But have you seen the odds speaking of the detroit. Lions to go winless who the regular season like. Do you think there's a chance they go. Winless of there is a chance. But how good of a chance do you think you gotta think they're gonna win somewhere. No right yeah. I think so but the odds right now according to kubeck dot. Co and and you can put money on this. They will go winless plus nine hundred minus three three three three that they do not go. When in the case of drags my one of my favorite movies boulder. Yeah and you remember the scene where the manager gets them in the shower. And he's yelling adam and he turns around to his coach and he says coach losses. How many losses. We got goes. We got a lot of losses. Say so that's what i think of what i think of the lions masses. Well you can check it all out online.

"A fan of the edmonton weiner's sacher. Just a fan of the sport. In general it doesn't appear that you've had much of the way of growing pains in making the jump from the toronto maple leafs from the east to the west to the edmonton honors. Has the transition for you to this point. Really been a smooth as it appears been It's been pretty smooth and it's been it's been really fun but obviously when you when you move cities and windows moving you're picking up moving your family. There's there's some growing pains there with getting a house and getting a new car and getting situated but from a hockey and point and from a teammate standpoint. it's been unbelievable. and and the city's been incredible breezy point here. So everything's been really good. And i think the auto credit for the guys for being so welcoming because we do have a bunch of guys who amend and that's exceptionally when you're kicking around all this stuff at the end of last year that you know you're in discussions with the leafs. Is there a way to make it fit. You probably had a feeling one way or the other. But what's that decision like for someone who's at home plan for the leafs and you can see kind of where this is heading like. What's that last couple of weeks like a lot of sleep. The it's It's a hard time just because there's so many moving parts and and it's not just the hockey decision the vision the family decision to i need ten months. But i'm timing. I dunno seven months summertime and thinking about you know. where is your son. Grow up your wife's moving ways. She's from toronto. Atlanta's and i always kind of having a family here have. Both of our families are in charles. So it's not just a hockey situation. It's it's a ally situation but we're really happy with with the decision obviously and tamaki implant. It was so easy. We've definitely like. I said that i thought would would work really well and then instead of four but one of the most important parts fat precision was actually born outside and and the city and seeing where. We haven't seen where theo or summer grow up and alanna never been then so when she got there and was able to see all those things that we've been easier decision process and we're really happy. So you're you're playing with austin matthews. Who's probably the best shooter in the game or next to oversee the best shooter in the game and chances are you're going to go to edmonton and now you're gonna. You're you got to play with mcdavid or dry seidel. It's not like it's not like you're getting short thriftier. Like what have you noticed among these great players you've got to.

"I don't know how you fix it. I mean like people. Can you know all they've got to make changes while you've got the same players you're not trading those players. You're not changing those players. How can those players be better more consistently even their own team. Says the same thing. Jake muslim who. I a feel or sense of moslem that. There's there's not a lot of bullshit jake. Muhsin agreed and so he said at the beginning of the year we we've learned a to be a little more mature in our game. Yeah well right now. They need to stick their noses in. They need to get their hands dirty because they may think they are. They're not san. Jose deserved the win. The other night they played the night before and montreal. Toronto had four days off five days off. They should toronto. Should've skated those guys into the ice. And it didn't happen and not much is happening throughout that lineup. With the exception. I mean michael hutchinson and his game wasn't very good right now. They've got the injury maroshek. Sounds like he's getting healthy. Jack campbell for the most part is has been fine if not better than fine but then you look at the defense. You mentioned muhsin david camp. Who's a real good defensive forward. His numbers aren't good defensively. Their power play isn't like you're the coach your sheldon keefe. You're looking at it. Gone aside from juggling that lineup. Where do you start. Just start with the power play and say okay. It's been it's been five games but really it's been two games. Yeah i've been six games. It's been two games because matthew knives visas about but everybody's hung up on the setup whether mourner belongs in the middle or on the wing against san. Jose couldn't get in the zone right no matter what your setup is. They couldn't get in the zone so they're not sharp. They're not right. Some of it can be cured with with a little bit more as we used to. Call a little as my dad. You say a little more elbow grease right like you get you get to work here. All all throw allies patterson from the connection. That's too there are times when a player thinks they're working hard enough and they're not like pederson says. Yeah my game's not right yet and you know what think back to his first year. How many times did you see him. Just tenaciously winning pocket. Back as an always on the puck like pavel data. Klay there right now. He may think he's doing it. he's not in. Toronto is not committed enough to get themselves over the hump to let their talent takeover. They're not yet and they better get there quick. Yeah agreed likewise with the chicago. Blackhawks this imprint. They're they're not but that's the way it appears. And i didn't think that they were going to make great strides. But i did feel that they were going to be better. And maybe that was putting too much stock. And bringing in seth jones and marc andre fleury and of course jon tapes being back on the ice leadership role and being healthy again. That's just a great. Nhl story but it just it. It feels like they're coming apart at the seams with that organization. Like on and off the ice while i was there for was there tuesday. I guess now and it was their home opener. They were playing the islanders. They played a good thirty minutes really good thirty minutes and then they just fell apart in their start. One in five their minus fifteen in goals like that is a debacle. Mine is so..

"Sergei rabovsky who's been booted in the shins for the last few years for pretty average play spencer night as well. They've got aeronautic bled back joel quenneville of course behind the bench. He said he sees a little bit of you. Know the the blackhawk copiers in this panther team. Yeah terrific start for them. Edmonton is connor. Mcdavid on pace for like two hundred twelve points again. It's crazy start for him. Their power play is unreal. I think two things that are going to be key for the oilers have been terrific so far one is the play. Duncan keith now. He's not duncan keith. From twenty ten but he has been really good yeah. He's been very good for them. That helps certainly on their defense. The others are goaltending has been more than adequate. Mike smith i and then when he got banged up a bit and he'll be back later this week. Apparently mika skin it's it's been been more than adequate if they can do that in goal man at mcdavid and dry seidel there now. They got hyman. And and pull yari. As and ryan nugent hopkins. That's that's a good team carolina. I'm surprised that they got like ten or eleven new guys. I thought they were going to have a little bit of a feeling out process. Freddie anderson's been awesome and goal for them. You know so. They're they're often running in the team. That i think they're one of the better teams but it surprised me how much they've scored early as saint. Louis a write in david perron had a hat trick. The he seems to be getting better. You like saint. Louis is where he thrives right. You're right. he went away. Played elsewhere back to saint louis. It's just the place for. Yeah all right. So we go through the undefeated. Which probably won't be undefeated when you're listening to the podcast. That's fine some great stories out of the gate so now let's kick over to the not so great and we'll start with the toronto maple. Leafs who again are playing the undefeated carolina hurricanes this monday night. So perhaps that takes the maple leafs in in a different direction. The morning skate children keefe essentially changed everything. He defended nick ritchie and rightfully. So i felt in talking about okay. Everybody in the media. Want to gravitate to nick. Ritchie isn't a fit with matthew matthews minor. Finally said okay. Well you could ask the same questions..

"You can watch funny videos or just watch. Tampa's fourth line this year because pat maroon corey perry on the ice together. All season is going to be of blown comedy show. Yeah we need a behind the scenes that i shit that they're going to be saying and doing on the ice. We really need an amazon prime offer. Nothing following them around. Seriously i would pay fucking every team in the league. You could do that okay. We got one more team before we bring john buccigross from espn. Of course that is the parental maple leafs last season ended. I guess you'd say typically. They blew a three to one lead. This time to montreal in the first round lost the series four games to three. Let's see they lost hyman. That was a big loss. They what they say. They won the regular season yet. Lost zach hyman joe thornton who. They brought in for the playoffs nick. Felino also gone. They brought in a goalie. Razek forward nick ritchie ford. Andre kasha forward michael button and forward. David camp there cup. Odds are eleven to one. Same old story tampa. It's been since nineteen sixty seven in row racy tom sawyer. I'm looking at tampa or bubba. My fault nothing would surprise me here other than win the cup. I mean i just don't see them winning a cup with his lineup. I mean i don't know if they have top goaltender. Peter didn't carolina last. He was the star of most of the ends up getting pulled pump playoff time because he wasn't to snuff and they're bringing them him to bring him into the guy i don't know man. I see more misery ahead for toronto. I do see them in the playoffs. Still busy a favorite team up. I don't think the goaltending worse addressed it getting their guy. They don't have the money to they got a decent one two punch. I like marasmus. I know he didn't have a huge sample size. I wanna see played twelve games. Last year i think he had his best. Save percentage of his career in that small sample size. I don't mind their d- Where i guess. There's a bit of a question. Mark as the five and six that sand dean and dermott could be good dude. I know but a playoff time. He's not a big presence out there. You know those big bodies the guys who can remove guys from the front of the net and he wasn't doing it enough offensively to outshine. Maybe the. I don't wanna say the lack of defensive ability but just you know it's just like what is he if he's a puck-carrying defenseman and you got him as a number five and he's not getting as touches and his reps is he as useful as he was. Let's say with the marlies and lighting up down the miners dermott. I think he fits well as a- a bottom pairing guy but you know nothing to write home about. We got riley going into his last season under contract. I don't know how much that's gonna play a factor. But i do like their top four on the back end where the issue lies is. I got those four monsters up front. So they got to unreal center one two punch with matthews and jt then you got monir on matthews wing typically and then william kneeland or on that second line with jt. That's looking how it's gonna play out. I think that a very good cheap replacement for hyman is going to be bunting which is good. Very good player. I was high on them. I talked about him at the end of the season arizona. He had ten goals in twenty games. Great anticipation he's an absolute pain in the ass to play against and given the fact that he's never played enough nhl games. I wanna say twenty five or twenty six years old. And he's still up for the caller with crazy odds and if he's going to be inserted on one of those top two lines are a. I would look to put a future bet on him. A lot of people have been talking about that online. I think he's gonna win it. I can i just put the better. Hoping he wins it. Plus thirty five hundred to biz plus thirty five hundred. And if he's playing with one of those top two lines. I wouldn't say that's a bad number two bat right. Ra you typically like those big those those longterm dog in the age thing. 'cause the caps off so i think with him being older they would never allow. It happened again. I don't you're getting that east. Coast may believes buying surrey scored ten goals. You might get. But i could easily see him getting twenty on one of those top two lines and then i don't know i don't know who's gonna insert on one of the other top denies. Some people are saying. Maybe nick ritchie. I don't why is it. Why aren't they saying mci. Mckay ever whatever's or say he's gay dude. I know he's one of those guys. He's got all the tools no tool box. I mean look at his numbers from last year. What the fuck did he do playoffs. Absolutely nothing i wanna see. No point in seven playoff games. So it's that bottom six where things get a little bit interesting. I like the fact that they do have that toughness. One thing that they kind of shied away from for a few years there they do have richie they got that. Curtis gabriel who's been running around like an absolute maniac and preseason and then and then simmons are they going to get the same production from jason specified that they got last year at his age. Making what seven fifty. He's making like the veteran league minimum. So the a lot of question marks there's gonna be a lot of pressure on that top four guys making all the money that they make.

dermott nick ritchie pat maroon john buccigross zach hyman Felino Razek Andre kasha michael button David camp hyman corey perry tampa joe thornton maple leafs tom sawyer monir william kneeland matthews Tampa

"Be as well. And that's why i think he's a pretty valuable commodity specifically in the east for a team that plays the capital's a lot and wants to get rid of their tom wilson problem and they just signed barclay goodra. That's what i wondered. I think it's a really good question. Just quick. I wanna go over jeff. Before the end of the podcast tarasenko. There were some rumors with philly. You know it makes sense. And i do think philly as one of the teams that asked for tarasenko medicals but i had someone kind of pooh-poohed me that today so again you know. We'll see where that goes by. I had someone who said they. Don't think philly's the leader but they definitely did request the information you know i really liked what arizona did then you'd picks and they got tax on hill. I heard that they set a standard. It's really interesting like Burki told me once he didn't trade mike campbell when cam later was a ufo. In calgary. and. I said why didn't you trade him. He said because i set a standard then he says if you you wait until the last minute and then you break your standard people will always think they can await you and i heard bill armstrong the arizona. He told teams aiden hill. Second rounder and what happened. Was he stuck with it and he got it like san. Jose really liked hill from when they played against him. I thought that was interesting. I thought that was getting lad for the pecs. I think that was a good move for them. Carolina they're in a bit of a standoff with the delicate which i definitely heard it and i wrote it that they may not qualify him. I gotta think that's going to happen now. Gourd man. that's gonna be an interesting one. I'm really curious to see what offer seattle gets on board. You know whose name. I've heard a little bit. Maybe is clean. bergen dallas. Now they got hey signed klingberg's one year from usa in that he might be available well if dallas doesn't think they can sign them. What are they gonna do here. I think they've been asked about that right. You know you've got hayes consigned you know. Look at all their d- klingberg one year for usa. I think they're getting asked about him a little bit. The larsen one is interesting to edmonton. I wonder vancouver's gonna be there. I'll tell you this to vancouver one of the centers they really liked was Nick dukes tag. I think that's one of the guys. They kinda looked around at. And i i wouldn't be surprised that they asked seattle if they take them but i think seattle wants the golick coconut. This goes back to a couple of administrations ago. It seems like in vancouver. Remember the original along. Oh deal with florida and bucs tad was all over it and that was the one that yelp pal and never never wanted to let go of bucs. I was the one guy that florida kept hanging onto kept hanging onto. They wanted to get paroled from winnipeg the ass back. Bucs that at it's not going to happen And the original along deal. I'm pretty sure that bucs that was the big piece going back the other way. There's always been something vancouver bucs that that's an interesting one. I am curious about yanni gordon as well. Here's what i'm interested about. Yanni gord on the tampa bay. Lightning is a third line center. Can he play higher in the lineup. Is my question about yanni gord. We might find out. Well that's what i wonder too like. I remember my favorite conversation. I ever had about places in lineup with bobby holy remembered corner. Watch junior game with bobby. And i said what the difference between you and the and the devils in you and the rangers and he said Bobby holik playing with the new jersey devils found the third line center. We're going to win the stanley cup. If i'm your first line center were not going to win the stanley cup. That's the difference between me and the devils in me with the new york rangers. But that's what i wonder about with yanni gord like we have him locked into this idea of being a third line center period. Because that's where we've seen him have success but you look at what's playing in front of him and i don't know the answer whether yanni gordon compla- higher in the lineup. Just because he did so in the american hockey league doesn't necessarily mean he can do it at the nhl level. But that's the guy that. I wonder about their look out if i'm seattle and i'm saying okay. Let's forget all the preconceived notions we have about yanni. Gord where we always say. Great third-line center. I wonder if he can play higher. I wonder if you only gordon can be a top six guy like do you think. That's the guy that seattle grabs at a tampa. 'cause if i'm tampa. That's the guy that i'm taking. How can you not only fence. He's a center. Alice learns a really good hockey player. Lawrence lawrence really good hockey player. No question about it words a center. I know he's a senator and i again. I just wonder if he can play higher in the lineup. One final one here. Because i had a conversation with someone that was pretty interesting the other day and they raise an interesting comparable for him and i think that it might even actually get higher was talked with some of the other day about zach hyman. Who told me the belief is an. I can't recall other. He said starting point or whether this is a comparable and this is part of a negotiation. But he said to me. It looks like zach. Hyman contract will be the josh anderson contract. Do you believe that or could it be even higher. Our listeners. josh. Anderson deal is seven years thirty eight point. Five five point five av. Do you think that a hyman deal can be bigger. Well i think look what the good road deal. Just was six years three point six. And don't you think. That hyman beats that i do think to hyman beats.

"Of thirty. One thousand podcast. Thanks so much for joining us today. Lots happening I shouldn't happen. Lots being talked about elliott and will stick with a couple of canadian teams. Here right now and we'll We'll start with the maple leafs. I'm of the mind that this is probably going to be a six times six deal. What's happening with zach hyman right now. Well he's got the permission to talk to all these other teams right and you know what i think happened again. Nobody direct like none of the direct sources will talk about it. But the best i can piece together is like i think toronto wanted to keep them and i think he wanted to stay. I agree with you. I think there's a six times six or maybe seven times six out there potentially for him. We'll see where this goes. I think what toronto tried to do. And this is kind of gas and educated. Guess was they tried to. Max hermit to bring down the av And i just think it's too far from where highlands potentially going to go here. You know. I think it's like a lot of players i think there's a willingness to leave something on the table. I i just think the gap was too big of what potentially is out there. What they suspect is out there. And what toronto could do so. Even though i think toronto tried to mac term it. I just i don't think they were. They were able to get close. See that surprises me. The idea the toronto would would max term this thing and again i understand this is this is your educated speculation but you know we just mentioned the avalanche and being an analytics driven organization and so is toronto and the same aging curves that exists in colorado exist in toronto with the maple leafs as well. And here's a player. Who plays an aggressive rough brand of hockey which can to injuries. And he's twenty nine years old and that type of commitment on term to a player where you know. The history of these types of players aren't flattering for those types of contracts. I don't disagree with you. Jeff but i think what that may have shown was just how much toronto felt about this particular player. And the other thing you can always do is try to make it so that you know it's easier by audible at the end of the deal ever. I guess it just showed. How much toronto thought about hyman that. They really tried to find a way and i just unfortunately don't think it ever got close. You know the The other speculation that edmonson. There's a number of teams would be interested. Edmonson was one of the first ones that popped up and my first thought. Was you know what type of good did zach. Hyman do in her previous life to be able to play with austin matthews and maybe connor mcdavid early andrei cycle in this life. Do we know if there is still interest from edmonton edmonton's one of the teams in there. You know. I know there were some reports in vancouver. That knocks are there too. I just like to talk about the quick sec number one. I do think the contracts are looking for that kind of player. I think they have some interest in in in jaden schwartz. I don't think they're the only ones you know. There's going to be a few other teams looking at schwartz. Like i wonder. For example of landis gog leaves if colorado goes there maybe. La goes there. He goes back to saint. Louis i mean those are all possibilities for him but the other thing about vancouver i i wanted to mention wherever some brock besser rumblings. Yeah on thursday. This is what i think was going on with brock besser. I do think his name came up. But i don't think it's because vancouver's got him on the market. I really think that it was vancouver. Going after something they really wanted or needed and besser name came up as the price that it was going to cost them. And i really believe that if besser was getting move this year it was purely because of a deal where vancouver got something and we would say. Okay now we kind of understand why this happened. I don't think his name is being thrown out there. I think it was specific to a certain kind of trade. So i don't think it's a general besser available. Let me stick with vancouver here for one second. What's going to happen with nate schmidt here. I think they're going to to trade him. They are trying to move him. I think everybody knows. I hope said. There's no nate schmidt's situation. And i guess it's all semantics. Maybe there is no situation. But i think there's an understanding that You know he'd like to play elsewhere. And i think they're going to try to accommodate them but they could have a lot of holes on their blue line. They're they're trying to sign. Adler i don't know how deeply they've gone with hammock yet. There is a chance he comes back and ends up back there. But i do think they're trying to find him a new home. Let me get back to toronto. then We just talked about Zach hyman the goaltending situation. We've talked about a plenty jack. Campbell is the goaltender under contract. He will be a maple leaf next season question. Mark about frederik anderson question mark about number three. Who's out there on another team right now. What are your spidey senses. Tell you about the goaltending in toronto. It's a great question. I think the goaltender market's gonna be really interesting. You know with the montreal situation now. Where they're they're gonna leave weber unprotected in there. They're gonna lose. Jake allen you don't think they can do a deal to get ron francis to stay hands off. I hear it's expensive man. He don't someone told me who had been a position to know that the The ask and this may all changes. The deadline approaches. That the ask for staying hands off of a player as a first and a third. I've heard it's been very very high. That's very very high. That's very high very very high and that kind of fits but i. I haven't heard that you know the goalie. Market's going to be going to be fascinating. Someone told me that you know this new dell covid thing is really interesting you know. Carolina has indicated that they think what he could win in our is too high and you know some people wonder if it's appear negotiating tactic but other people tell me. They think they're serious that they'll only go to a certain point with the delicate and and then they might move on any maple leaf wise. Well i should talk about. The goal is because i keep on losing my train of thought right like this is not your fault. This is my fault like my flee like attention span. I keep getting distracted by something shiny. The name of this podcast cats and laser pointers go really is so true. Goalie wise everybody thinks seattle is taking dreger from florida and signing him. Now will that happen. I don't know but people are expecting it. So what other goaltenders. Now i think seattle is interested in whole be but not at the number. I think they want to see if they can get vancouver to retain something or try something there and then seattle's undoubtedly going to take a couple of goalies to see if they can flip them because if it's dreger we'll see what happens. Withhold be and montreal things. It's going to be allen and all of a sudden. Where else could we be going with this. Didn't we all think. I thought that anton khudobin was going to be one of those guys but then big ben bishop goes out in agreed to waive his no trade right. There's another one bishop. Mike smith isn't signed yet and edmonton..

"I mean, they and you know what They look like If that Syriza's is a game like last night, Montreal's gonna beat them period end of story words that I never thought would come out of my mouth. I mean, honest to goodness. But if they if that Syriza's like they have to skate, they have to keep going at it and what should scare them. And I know we have a lot of leave fans listening. In the area. More in particular. Across the river is is Cary Price look like Cary Price and not carry thrice. I started calling him carry thrice because of his propensity to give up three or more goals. And you know what? He looked like Carey price last night and that that should scare them. That's just scare them immensely. You know, when they already got enough, the pressure of being well made, believes in their head and everything. But, Mac, I want to ask you this is I've been waiting to ask you this all day. If that was you, and that was Corey Perry. Would you have asked him to dance? Because fully knows getting ah lot of heat, like from who Everybody knows it was inadvertent, even fully know, said it was in it from hose again. He From hockey people hawking a lot of hockey people don't know. Don't know. Don't save me like real hockey. People like like like that's a good question was back. People that know the game that because what happened there, and I broke it down earlier is Corey Perry and and Feli. No squashed everything rate there, and even the way Perry sort of like took You took his up becoming, either it squashes everything. It's smoldering the fire. It's whatever like that. Nothing builds up to it. You don't have Cory if Corey Perry wouldn't wouldn't have done that, and it made a bigger deal of it, depending how it is now, if Cory period of the smartest thing and who can you know even it looked like got a few shots. And because it sort of looked like he felt bad, and he started wanted to get the golf gods karma, But, er the golf gods, the hockey gods. Carmen back too much, you know, like To me. That was the greatest thing Corey Perry is ever done as a team player, and I'm I'm exaggerating because he's got to stay on the cops and memorial cups and stuff. But you know what? I mean? He's known as sort of, you know, selfish player and right. You know what I mean? So that wasn't around move that was a respectful The way that they did it. I liked it and I'd like to ask. You know Jody Shelley was on it. It shall not work because hack of a job Who's one of the like the last of the gun slinger, enforcer, guys and stuff, But I just think it just quelled everything down. And then you look Um, because they got the revenge. You know what I mean, like there's nothingto. There's nothing to drive off. And you know what the big thing is Shawn? No fans in Canada. So the fact that there's no fans there that you can't that and that's why Toronto is probably going to suffer more. They play to perimeter where I saw last night. I'm sorry for Are you trying to fans? But I saw that I don't think you can win with the Mitch Marner because he's doesn't have that jam that I see. Like a nick Backstrom have when it comes down to it. Zach Hyman's great inside guy, but they got too many perimeter guys. They're gonna if they're gonna like you said last night wait for that power play and you know Austin. Matt is a great player. But, you know, is he still in which immature to the facto understand that he can't do it all himself and who's going to support him? So I could be totally wrong. This leadership in the fact that you got Joe Thornton in the room and stuff like this might Help. It has way more than it hurts. So Wolf. I know what this team's all about, anyway, so we'll talk more playoffs. Obviously, Boston Washington going at it there the overtime teams, but we're gonna take a break here got to pay the bills. But thanks for joining us here out of Friday night. AM 7 60 wjr I'm and Thomas congratulations to the members.

And despite cases, where agents used tear-gas on migrants that included children instances of less lethal force like tear gas and batons are also down seventeen and a half past the hour. Now as Robert workman joins us, Robert Robert, what is all this about the battle over L A. Did I miss something? Oh, the whole big to do between the clippers the Lakers who's got the supremacy down in Westwood and that sort of well, the clippers got by the Lakers one thirteen to one zero five earned bragging rights around the staple center until they meet again, I suppose twenty three points for download Gallinari Twenty-one for Lou Williams. Phoenix came from down ten in the fourth quarter to win the sons have just fourteen wins this season. Milwaukee only has sixteen losses yet.
