"Two and fifteen at best. Come on come on. They can even we want against jacksonville. Seriously jacksonville comes the end. It's a week one anything can happen. They've never played together talking playoffs. Definitely no one week one last year and then lost fifteen jacksonville. Florida zone could happen. I guess. Same there in the rut for rattler rich. Rut for rattler already. Dude whitney mercilus zach cunningham plays football christian kirksey defense. I mean there's some guys one day at a time. You got a chance everybody does. We're all oh there. It is schneider's gonna take out his tool belt one day time. You're gonna take a one game at a time. One day at a time. When the rolla marlboro and then put the shawn watson thirty inactive that healthy. Scratch one of the greatest. The game has right. Now because of all the other stuff third. We're gonna be positive. We're going to be positive on today's show. I love it because do we seriously. The third hour pack a lunch. I know it's the two to three hour eastern on east coast lately. "That hasn't done anything they've had one good season white last fifteen years Watts boards is going to have such a great season. I didn't like them taking t. Late in the first round of those alley suspect when robertson had such a good season say is considering not they have so many holes that need affects defense last year the most points in the afc twenty seven versus the past thirtieth versus abroad End lights out. You mentioned they have to play the nfc west. I mean i just don't see it here. Don't see the offense and if you look at their wide receivers. I mean not chart already as broken finger. Leader would save are broken finger and each getting that mended but still the receivers are averaged. Best at best cincinnati about the steal. Your steelers receiver. Tagore's does barely. I like the jaguar receivers. I think that's a good area is a very very Who are the best receivers. Harry is very very strict when it comes to wide receivers arklow lead them in the team of saving lives with seven hundred yards. Seven hundred yards young. Everybody show. i had the year before. I don't wanna make your favorite receivers. I like the giants receivers. That's why you think they're top chenault. Good galt is going to be belt. If if like i said if. Cd lamp doesn't live in the lineup. And the slot. He's gonna use these. It'd be lined up the outside for doubts. Thank you you go now at your dallas cowboy fan them joan through all right so now i said I said i think urban meyer relatively speaking inherited a great situation here with this. Afc south dumpster fire. I think just the opposite of this. David collie or guy ravens. What was he like the passing coach. And everything the hiram if no picks to make a what did they trade. The one in the two for l'armee tunsil years ago so they have to start sixty seven pick overall they get davis mills quarterback for stanford who looks like elsie he'll see time gra nico collins the wide receiver for michigan. I liked him. But let's face it. This is a disaster. They lost five in a row to close the season You know how do you replace the shawn watson. and he's not traveling with the team to this preseason game although he's signing autographs yesterday i don't get what's going on but forty eight hundred yards thirty three touchdowns he's a sixty eight percent passer and he did all this being sacked one hundred and fifty five times in three seasons like. I don't know. I don't know what they're gonna do with that. How do they do this. This is talyor who got a waiver from the team doctor and is now going to start this mess or davis mills that the fourth toughest schedule. Yeah they they add hightower mark. Ingram phil lindsay. Marcus cannon linemen will fuller gone defensively. Lovey smith comes in at nine takeaways. Last year i think the only team with fewer than ten jj waas gone zach. Cunningham's only bright light there. One hundred sixty three tackles added. Jack lawson what to do i. I don't know what the is four. I have them exactly with four. What kind of odd you get on that. That's also five to one odds touch them to make the playoffs. The noah's minus twelve hundred. If you can put that parlay go for the yes is plus seven. Ten paulie kid jumping on the under here is exactly. Yeah plus one twenty here sal. I do like that that value with the under. There's just so many questions that need to be answered regarding watson It was right around this time for years ago when the nfl Came down on zeke. A for his punishment. Like even without this the you know these things going These allegations from watson going forward in terms of the court system. Whatever doesn't the nfl have to make ruling on this eventually. Like to what. They're gonna do with watson like what what's going to happen here. I just think this team is in disarray. Regardless of what happens they there. Is this no juice with this team right. Is there anything besides to get excited about. They bought they bought and a gaggle of running backs here. It's kind of interesting david johnson. i do like philip. Lindsey a little bit from the broncos. He's there now. Mark ingram is there. Now i don't know none of them really excite me though. They're receiving core is ridiculously weak. If cooks is your number. One i don't. I don't see anybody getting too excited about that. I don't know it's it's it's gonna be a long year for this texans team. There's just too much drama surrounding it. I gotta take the under. I can't see going with the over here at all is the only thing i'll say about the texans. Tell me why maybe this is not the same situation but this time last year the washington football team was in similar turmoil. Right our you didn't have to. You didn't have to replace a franchise quarterback into shawn watson. That's that's a little different but you know whatever. Add the the team owner. There were allegations the whole thing with the how the cheerleaders were treated by the front of the some of the employees. That was terrible. They didn't have a name. Yeah the quarterback. They drafted wasn't very good and they played their shit division. And want it right. So i know i know. They're not rivera lots to do with that a good coach absolutely. But i'll say that. Maybe i'm not expecting them the turn around. You can't get too excited for more than four wins brother brian. You have the under. Also i give him wins at jacksonville. The first week versus jacksonville first week versus carolina and then to that you guys are gonna laugh against seattle and the chargers. Those are bolt home games. Licensees and those are the south everett dog in week. One at home against the jags as of right now there are three. Four hundred yeah. I don't think they're favored any any point. They won't be favored at all right now. I mean unless unless watson is playing or unless somebody else. Another quarterback gets hurt but home against carolina. They'll be an underdog few points right. I think yeah with somebody. Home against the jets. That's close. i guess they'll be an underdog that's late. That's about thanksgiving weekend. We don't know by then. But i still have them. I guess i guess four winds for a team. That's not favored. Any games is a lot. But i'm calling it at five to one bright hausa you. Yes so. I mean yeah. I liked the under here. I mean that you know last year. Even with a phenomenal season by watson right. They were still four and twelve they likely have the worst rosser Worth their worst roster in the nfl. I mean bill. O'brien the lake when we talk about Bill o'brien should probably be in jail based on how this roster looks i mean it is it is so like i mean everybody knew to. At the time that every move he made was really no picks. The couldn't just look at it. I mean that's why at this point really. Just i mean if you even if you're watson guy like just trade get something just start for. I mean you're gonna stink. You're probably gonna stink anyway. Whatever you know whatever you can get from because you don't know after this year but you know how much he'll play And it's probably worth it for them to start over but like you said before like shack lawson probably their main acquisition. They'll do for them. You'd have to figure with walk on this team..

"Tell me how to raise you your twenty one. Raise your damn self. You don't get to do it. I don't i'm not happy. That and get your ass out of bed and go to class. You don't get the choice. Oh we empower not not not in my house. They didn't when decisions were made with. Dinner was at five you didn't get to dictate what the dinner was at nine. Well well that's you. Don't get to decide what time you get up to go to class under my roof. You're going and i'm not saying well me but i think most people feel that way. Same thing here You're under contract. Did you've been leaked two years. One of them. You were hurt your great player. You want to sit out have had it. When are we going to find somebody with balls enough in a front office to not let stars determine and i'm on the players side most of the time but you're under rookie contract your your second year in the league. How many well let me ask you how many championships jordan win. In his first five years warriors say it again. Zero zero san right you. Thank you zion. Guess what. If i'm running the pelicans you'll be a training camp if you're not you won't get paid simple. There'll be no constellation. They'll be no. Hey we love you. Let's there'll be none of that you don't show up. You're getting paid. We'll play without you. I'll coach players. That are ear. Somebody step up and let them know somebody. I hope you're right. Mc that this is just kind of not that big a deal but meaning that they. He didn't say it if it isn't let us know so we don't have to have this conversation on radio show sports talk seven ninety aaron wilson in ten minutes footing the logic in illogical former john bury continues to break it down one seven nine hundred sports talk seven hundred ninety thousand show mc. Listen man you you tell me your run. The pelicans if this story is that his family. Zion doesn't want to be there. What would be. Okay how would you lose. Let me put it this you look. You're the person who is owns the team. You're the billionaire owner that The vinson family the benson family. You're mrs benson the whole thing you all. You're the family and he comes to you or you hear this and they say i am happy We haven't won yet. Well yeah the the. The conference here ends pretty good. There's some good players But where. I'm in my second league. I rj barrett and. I want to reunite. That's been talked about to whether it's true or not who knows. I don't know where the depth of this is but it's out there so we discussed because it is nba playhouse and he is a star. Oh yeah we'd love him here it'd be great now. Go get him. But if you're the benson family and i tell you that all right. I'm design in his fan. Hey i want out. Yeah what they said true. I want to go play somewhere else. Man i we're not making the strides i wanna make and i'm an mvp player and I like the city. The fans are great. But i i want out. What do you think. I would go back and try. I mean first of all any team. And i would do it till you try and fix it. You figure out the issues. Try work together that way. Of course to ask him why. I mean you try to figure all that out. I mean realistically knowing that if how the nba and the superstars work. I would probably go ahead and be ready for this to be a. I wanna go type things. We see this all the time. And i would be. I wouldn't have no problem being the first one of these guys and going so you're under contract. Get ready to play if you don't wanna play that's new. There's no money for you to be paid. If you're going to not show up and play like there's there's a line for player empowerment. I think it's been bruin and you hear this stuff in the nba. And the people that they were gonna toss in it. Yeah we're getting to that point. Were the owners are tired of it being so out of whack because it is out of whack creighton at themselves by not battling back right and this thing has got to get to a point. Now where it's you know you're finding your finding some sort of way to keep it from happening all the time it just as simple as it gets. The players can't keep having this much power compare ownership but they can't as long as they keep allowing it. Yeah and it's allowing note note. That's exactly right and who's going to. Who's going to be the one. Is it going to be green bay. Will it be the texan. Santa attitude when when when you want out after the legal stuff here with john. Tokyo said home no problem or with aaron or with anybody in the nba which were player. Impairments big as any spoil. So if it's me. And i'll say i feel i'm with you and you know i've always said i try to find out. Why why he want out. Well there's enough good players or i can't stand the coach in here okay. Well how do you like the new one. Who do you think you like. I would ask him. I would ask. And here's the cans you anybody. Maybe as familiarity with some. I don't know. And if you hire somebody to say zion this or before you hire them. Maybe get an idea of what type a coach likes. I don't mind ask him doesn't mean i'm a higher wants but i'm okay. I've always said okay with getting input. I believe in that especially from your best player as long as you. Give me the input now. If you say well. I like y- honest. Katie and steph here. Well that's unreasonable. Sorry dude can't do it. I want to go play. Okay now give me something within reached. It's not sitting on mars. We can't get to. We're gonna drive. Suv's amar's mars doesn't get there so now what okay so we go through that and i try to make him comfortable but he's not. He's not doesn't matter what you do. I want out i listen. I'm telling you what i would do. I'd say we'll see training camp. And if not then you know i get to a point. Where will you gotta kisses. Ask is any won't be happy. And you're okay. So what's the worst that happens to be camping. Asses rights right of every day right. It's my in the league right. And if you're a fan of new orleans who would you be. I mean as much as you may love zion. Who who you matter at. If you're the benson family all of a sudden he says. I want to leave if you deny him. The right to say listen. I don't care what you do standing firm. You're a member of the pelicans. I'm not budging or pr wise or if you say okay well. Let's move him. The fans or should i would think we're going to be on your side right now. They may want a winner. You go get other players. But they don't want you to part with zion. What are you worried about you. You're the boss your team and been in an nba finals. You're not going to the nba finals anytime soon. And your best player. If it's true wants out. Now guess what i say. We'll do everything we can do. Yep we'll do everything we can to get better and your the staple of this franchise. And but i can tell you this. You won't be playing anywhere else anytime soon. All well you got to tell you. Gotta kiss kissing his ass. I got more money than he does his boss. He can show up because once you're out of the court if you don't wanna play hard that's that's okay. You're still under kinda eventually. Your legacy is going to matter and you're gonna play hard so whether it's and it's not just specifically it's is. This is because well this is the most recent but when is an owner going to say no sorry you are not running up willing to lose so i can make sure i put my line in the sand and says i'm willing to lose another year or two you don't get to dictate future. In my franchise negatively you either going to be here and play hard or you're gonna lose a lot of money and that is realistic. Because i'm telling you money's not the issue for the benson family or anybody else that running a franchise and our comes. A point is long people from kids. Two dolts they'll take whatever you're going to continue you. Keep moving the line in the sand. They're gonna keep taking inch the old. They're gonna take fourteen miles so no if this is true. Zion is eight to tell you this buddy. Love ya the. You'll be a new orleans. Pelicans i don't give a fuzzy rat's ass how happy you are great players. I don't give away because they just wake up one morning and their families pissed. Good that you and your family go out to dinner talk it out and say well get used to it because you're gonna continue to eat here cajun food. That's where we live. And that's exactly what we're doing. You ain't going anywhere. Some owner out there grow a set and finally say not player. Empowerment goes so far. I want their input. This is my franchise and our best player will be here sports. Sean salisbury the sean salisbury. Show our number three love this hour. decided a couple of guys that i need to sky on for an hour. Just dissect that every friday and he obliged and we're grateful to have you catch stuff on sports seven ninety our blog sports seven seventy dot com. He's got great stuff and a lot of it Bodily here at houston covering a ton of is as anybody in. The country covers their team a local team and nationally. We got here. Aaron wilson joins us here on. Sportstalk seven ninety. Aaron great have and brother on a friday. Always appreciate you go so fast. Let me start here. You covered the baltimore ravens. For how many years longtime how many years. You come sean. Fifteen years you did. How could anybody that looks like. He's about thirty. What'd you start right when you're for the school paper that covered young scoop. Yeah there you go. Well you've turned into a one of the best in business song you fifteen years of covering the ravens. You're welcome and you've covered now. The texans for for how many years now been here for five five there. He goes over the last twenty years covering the nfl but two teams. And the reason. I'm asking this is what's the difference in. Why aside from players. But you know the bodies and the in the the front office structure wise and from ozzy all the way down when he was there. What is the difference. Wire the ravens more successful. I talk about management wise entrust wise. Why are they more successful than the texans. And how do you get to that point. Since you've covered a super bowl team. They're right would it starts with is having that general manager. That's to me what they haven't had until you hire someone. That's an upcoming executive like nicosia area but ozzie newsome first draft nineteen ninety-six inaugural year the ravens. They moved from cleveland. he doesn't have the title and he talks modell out of a potentially disastrous. Decision are modell wanted to sell some tickets. He wanted to draft. Lawrence phillips out of nebraska. We all know. Tap happened lawrence phillips. Who's no longer with Had a lot of off field problems serious criminal matters instead as newsome says no. We're going to turn in the car on jonathan. And that's going to be the first pick the cornerstone. He's going to be a left tackle. He's gonna play guard for us as a rookie. And then we're going to get him comfortable there. Then make him a left tackle and you have to the hall of famer. Did later that round he drafts. A ray lewis out of the university of miami undersize linebacker lot of hard lot of instincts. Lot of hard hitting skills and just you know really ability to diagnose what the offense is gonna do legendary player another hall of famer so those were his two. I you pigs. He hits them right out of the box. Two home runs. Trust started right off and that's our modell with the fan base and then stabbing shoddy because its financial issues. He buys in and i. he's at forty. Nine percent of the franchise then he buys the rest of it and advice shoddy because he had this apprenticeship under art where he's watching and seeing how they run the team and getting to know ozzie and going to practice every day kind of you know learning more about football. He's a businessman. He founded his own self made billionaire but he understands what i don't know and that's the big deal. There may always entrusted. The scouts and the personnel department has always basically outranked coaching where those guys have the juice. So if you're john harbaugh initially you don't have a lot of personnel power and you always have that traditional. Gm as the boss coach model. It hasn't been that way here. When i since i've been here you know bill. O'brien was the guy. Bill was always the dominant personality. When he wasn't he was fighting. With rick smith trying to get to that point and now you have the traditional model again where nick caserio very much. You know the guy in terms of the big picture and everything is done in concert with david. Kelly but you know nick is the one with the six super bowl rings coming in and they hire coach from baltimore and he was a part of all of that he understands how they run it between eric. Casta john harbaugh ozzy's still not out of the picture but he's he's gonna semi retired and their structure. Some of that david. His understanding of that can help the texans but yeah the way they do it. It's different and they just had a deep bench of personnel guys at something. Every team wants to eventually develop. So like i knew joel douglas when he was the turk on hard knocks in two thousand one and he was a scouting assistant. Joe hor tease is a guy. That's director of personnel there and has chosen to stay there over some job offers years him to and cutting is now philadelphia director of personnel. A lot of these up and coming guys and they've all been there. George kookiness phil savage. They've had a lot of people there. Vince newsome ozzy and so they have a lot of executives. And that helps because you wanna have a lot of smart a lot of good a lot of seasoned professionals. And they're attempting to do here. You know they just promoted james lipford. Who's very highly regarded. They had matt bazargan his respected. They have some guys but it's different and we're talking about decades versus you know a you know things that are just getting started here so yeah i know eventually. They want to build things like that. But it's different. And i would say the big thing is having that bedrock of really good scouts and you start from there and then trusting the scouts their opinions. How you build your draft board and then just making good football decisions you make them and they're not perfect. They've missed on people. I remember when they drafted mark late in the first round and dan cody in the second round both oklahoma and so that draft that was nothing They drafted cobb bowler. Everybody makes mistakes even the good franchises. Everybody misses that's part of scouted. Aaron wilson joins us here on the sean size. We erin no matter how much we talk about it or anybody else in this town nationally. There's a wide base in a big fan base. From what i read here and see and listen to and people that approach me that no matter what any of us say that they do not believe. Nick caserio is making the football decisions. They believe he's got to check with jack easterby Are they closer. Could they are. Is the fan base. That believes that or anybody in the media believes that are they close to that or are they way off he. I don't think that's the case at all. Nick has trigger. Nick is the boss of the personnel department. And he's to approve jack. No no. I think that they do things where they have a collaborative process so yeah he would talk to him and you know he'd be involved but nick is very much. The general manager everything that goes with that all the power. He's got the you know if it was something like are we trading to shawn watson. We'll cow mcnair is going to be involved in some kind of big something big like that but yeah jack easterby is a key guy and very well respected by nick caserio. They're really close From their time in new england together but no he doesn't report to jack that's not their structure that they work together. I had anyone tell me anything like you. Know there's some sort of you know jackie's secret things. No no. That's not the situation. But yeah he's important though and he you know regardless of what people outside the organization might say or think or believe within the building. Yeah this guy is very highly regarded and you have. You know a lot of respect from cow. Mcnair and nick acerra other people in the building. So yeah i would say. It's that's not the case though he's not. The people aren't going to believe that right people want i think may maybe it's convenient for people to wanna hold the little. Jack's making the decisions in the organization agree because he came interim general manager because they have someone else to run it at that. Point once o'brien was jettisoned. Aaron aaron wilson joins us here real quick before we go to break. We'll come back and discuss Matter of fact let me thi this up so you can think about it will come back and talk about it. The number sixteen overall pick in this year's draft and the twenty twenty-five second round pick to oklahoma city for al horford moses brown and a twenty twenty three second round pick so brad stevens put work together right away As a new. The the boss. Right brad brad stevens decision right guys. I would assume so i. They're doing to be honest with you. I guess he wants al horford back. He coached him right. I mean like thirty five and has a bunch of money. Talk the two more years and you giving up the sixteenth big as well and at a score so well there you go. I mean that's brad stevens. I big deal that. We'll hit some of that in the nine o'clock hour. There's going to be coaches new coaches everywhere including carlyle because well luanch and him didn't get along. Apparently so rick stepped aside and the superstar wins. We'll get on wilson's opinion on that in the football since here as we roll through all right aaron. I asked the question. If you and i and i love about you is because you're not here. You know the in the field. Good business because you have an opinion of back off so you and i are going in and we're gonna meet go. I'm working on the whiteboard and drop some stuff. And we're gonna watch tape with jack and with cal. I just try to give fans and idea of what the front office is about and the perception. How much football do they know. I would say they know a lot when you talk about anyone. That's an ownership like cowboy. Mcnair you draft meetings at practice. You're in the inner sanctum. You know a lot because you're around a lot you're in anyone that's in a practice and in these high level meetings you have a pretty deep understanding you're going to the owners means you're going to a lot of these things and you couldn't help but learn a lot and for someone like you know cows smart guy. He's got knowledge about what's going on but he doesn't pretend to be football man because he defers to a sport ball people but he's like most owners and there does it there. It'd be able to access knows like can on a board that type of level but they're going to be able to say. Hey you know what This is what we think about this player. They're going to have knowledge about you. Know their top personnel and i would say my understanding of calories. Yeah he has a you know what you would consider to be a healthy knowledge of their roster which players are the key guys all that stuff but that would be a shock if you didn't have that level when you're going to practice every day and attending meetings and talking regularly with your general manager when you have a situation where the owner doesn't know that stuff. It's he's an absentee owner. Maybe he doesn't live in that town. A for example. Like the dolphins owner. Stephen ross does not live in miami. He's in new york tending to his real estate matters most of the time but yeah no. He's intimately involved. He's always there. So i would be shocked. I've never heard anyone say yeah. Cows no idea this players know he knows. I mean if you do interview with him and you're asking him about this player that player he seems to have a ready amount of information to you know to talk intelligently about the player but he doesn't look at it as his role to be. Hey i'm gonna breakdown. Who's gonna be our sam linebacker and things like jerry jones dose like jerry jerry. Jerry lets me on. Jerry is the general manager of right the dallas cowboys and jerry. You know he didn't do this to just handed off. Jerry got involved with dallas cowboys. Because he wanted to do what tex schramm did. He wanted to run it him jimmy. Johnston wanted to be like that. And so it's different but yeah my understanding is normal owner normal amount of knowledge and you know well-versed on the roster and that's the thing that he does defer though to nick on to be the football expert he's the guy that signs of checks about one of the guys that nick drafted this year's been a lot made about nico collins What do you think is realistic expectation for a rookie wide receivers taken in the third round and do if he had played last year. Do you think he would have gone higher in the draft. I think that because he lost fifteen pounds and he was able to run for four three six four to fifteen if he had played and had to recent film on top of the good testing and the senior bowl performance and a promising. You know two thousand nineteen i think. Then you're looking at second round. But he got him in the third. I think that's right where he's supposed to be drafted and what i saw from him at the ot as someone that can fast enough to get separation pretty sharp routes for a big guy. He's doesn't have problem lowering center gravity and you know being able to cut with some explosiveness and catch the football. Well that's a big thing contested catches or big for him. Fifty fifty balls. He's always open because he's so big and he does take a little time to gather a speed once he's rolling. He's ruin pretty fast. But you know. He's not someone that i would consider to be a short intermediate guy that you know. Is really that polished yet. He's still got work on some of the shorter routes but a deep guy and he can also just you can lob it up to him on a fade. But i think that what i would anticipate from him is behind. Brandin cooks getting some targets and it wouldn't surprise me if he caught. If things are going well you know three or four touchdowns as a rookie. Because i think he's gonna advocate building red zone threat all right erin. I'm air wilson. Jobs here on the sean salisbury. Show as he does every friday. Eight to nine o'clock is stuff at sports ninety dot com and follow him on twitter. Great follow great information I teased you today by saying that begging for optimism this time your and most teams have it. This is about the time of year in the nfl where everybody thinks are going to be good now or at least has hopes they're going to be good. I don't know. I don't get the feeling of the buzz here that that's the case and a lot of that has to do with the dijon situation. I get but give people since you're so close to this. If you were to sell me on optimism for the season honest optimism. What is good question. Yeah when i look at the roster and you know if you look at it sort of glass half full you'd think about some the positions that are better than last year. When i thought last year it was a disaster corner of the year. They've got no kion. Cross bernard hargraves as you're starting corners. So you get bradley roby you get in terrance mitchell. Who was really competitive for cleveland last year. And you have desmond king as your nickel. He's been no pro bowl before so all of a sudden corners and looking quite as scary as in the last year win. I think they would have won the tennessee game. If you don't have cross not they're getting posted up by aj brown. That said you know we're talking about one of the worst defenses and football. I'd say lovey. Smith's presence is no reason to have some optimism. The defense would get better and in some of the younger players. Like charles lamented who i think is a potential breakout guy based on what we saw from him at the end of the season just playing forty nine percent of the snaps so when i think about certain positions on the defensive side and lovey smith coaching them. I think there's some potential. They were pretty efficient. Linebacker other than zach cunningham and everyone liked what terrell adams did. But i think. They're better with christian. Kirksey kevin pierre louis and you it at linebacker where i have some concerns is you know you. How do you replace. Jj watt and it's going to be by committee and then you have a lot of guys changing positions that were standing up that now. We're going to have their hand down like whitney mercilus. He did that about ten years ago at the university of illinois. so that's an adjustment. And so you have a lot of change and a lot of guys having to learn a new system and those are the reasons for you know besides the fact that the defense didn't perform very well last year to be concerned. But i think lovey will inject a different attitude into the defense and they have done a good job of getting forty three personnel and noth- athletes to play in it to make this conversion from the three four. But it's gonna be a work in progress. And i would expect their defense to be better in the second half of the season after they get accustomed to know playing in that defense more so than right at the start and we'll see how that works for them but i think some reasons robbed him ism and the other side of the football. I would expect the interior line to be better. Just addition by subtraction with no nick. Martin know zach bolton who both had poor seasons last year i think just in brit could upgrade them at center brings a nasty streak. Solid technician was one of the best centers football before his acl. But you're hinging a lot of this on what's his knee going to be like says. His knee feels good. And then another guy. The right guard lane taylor who was good for green bay before he towards acl tore his acl last september so healthwise you wonder you wonder is the interior line you know. Are they going to be one. Hundred percent But yeah i think there's some positions that they have gotten better at but a lot of this is subtle. It's not like you can say yeah. They got all pro or are they got this guy. He's been to five pro bowls. Now he's gonna play. No we're just talking about you know where they've gotten a little bit better and they don't look as helpless as they did last year at corner theme of the season..

"From Houston, Texas, where Joked earlier in the show. Everybody's been calling in about JJ want why he belongs with their team to Shawn Watson. Trade Offers have been coming at me on this Sunday show for weeks now. And of course, this is a city that since the beginning of the year is traded, James Harden lost George Springer. The bloodletting just continues when it comes to stars leading this town either of their own volition or the volition of incompetent decision makers. But the end result is the same for me, which is I come in every Sunday and I love doing this show and I welcome these calls. But let's face it, Let's call it what it is. Have basically turned into the pawn stars of nationally syndicated radio shows. I am Rick, The pawn shop owner from Pawn stars is what I am and all of you are walking into my store. Looking into the looking under the glass phone. How much for that? J. J. What? What's it going to take for me to get that to Shawn Watson? Off your hands? That's basically what I am now. It's cool. There's worse things to do on a Sunday I love doing this show. But this is this is not how I drew it up. Two years ago, when when the Texans were winning divisions and the Rockets were in the Western Conference final Astros were were in the world serious two out of three years. Heck, they won one of them. In 2017. Yes, they still won the world seriously, even though they got caught stealing signs. It still counts people you can't tell me otherwise. So when I you know, when I signed up for this a few years ago, I didn't do it with the idea that well, the Houston teams have to be good. Earl's. I don't want to subject myself to these national colors. That would be a wussy thing to do. You know what I mean? Like it's you do because it's fun. You do it because there's some prestige. You do it because you want to get the reps. You know, you gotta build that resume, right? But most of all, it's fun to do. But I will tell you I didn't see it going this way. I didn't see it. Where? Instead of really being a radio host. I'm just here to field your calls about what it would take to get me in that JJ watt today. What kind of offer do you need for me to get this George Springer in the Toronto Blue Jays uniform. How much for the James Harden in the window. 855 to 1 to four. CBS. I'm kind of joking around. I really do. Enjoy this. This is actually the part of sports talk that I nerd out about. I have no idea of the rest of your nerd ng out about it. And I tend to think that there's not Houston fatigue because these are the biggest stories. They just happen to be right in my backyard. If anything, If you find those stories to be compelling, you should feel lucky that you've got somebody who covers this team on a daily basis. Watched every snap. These guys have played. And I have their best interests in mind. So don't come at me with some bad reasons as to why they should play for your team. I'm gonna tell you right now that there's certain cities out there. I don't want you even calling asking about JJ Watt. All right. I've watched him get mistreated for the last year. So here in Houston. Bye. Mistreated. I mean, surrounded with a roster that was rags. Surrounded with a defense that didn't have any other good players on it other than J. J. Watt. There's a couple others. Justin reads a decent player. Zach Cunningham is okay. But if I'm like, honestly, it may have Bradley Roby said his moments Okay, That's four guys. Hey, Sean. I don't know. You know this, but football's 11 on 11. That's right. Crap. I forgot. We need seven more guys. Right, 855 to 1 to four CBS, but I wanna get some of you worked in here s O. We're going toe. We're going to jump back on the phones. We do have another guest coming up later on this hour 20 past Scott Smith. Senior writer for buccaneers dot com. Want to get some of the follow up? To, um to the Super Bowl Championship in in Tampa. That was fun rooting for Tom Brady last week. I'd never done it before. Was always rooting against Tom Brady because I found the Patriots and Bill Belichick to be somewhat deplorable. But Tom Brady is no longer under the under the dark cloud of patriotism. Not actual patriotism with a lower case P. I mean like patriots with a capital P. I know we have listeners up in Boston. I don't want to alienate you. But I think you guys know like that was a really annoying two decades, Okay? No city deserves that much success. Eight by 5 to 1 to four, CBS. Let's go back to the phones. Let's go to Illinois. Don't know. Checking in today. I like it. Tom Tom Europe on CBS Sports Radio. What's going on? Sure. And you gotta stop complaining about the cold in the snow because I'm sitting here in my drive two degrees and we got four inches fresh on top of about a foot night, Tom. Hey, Tom. Tom. Hey. I lived in Naperville for three years before I moved back to Houston. So you're right. You're 100%, right? I sound like the biggest baby right now. My bad. I'm in. I'm in Naperville. So I'm a Packers fan all my life right? And I not going to argue against why JJ should come to the Packers because I think That's a no brainer. I'm a little more concerned about the Packers and how they position themselves. I hope they realize that the last two Super Bowls that they won OK, not through the draft. They get there because of the draft. But you know, Reggie White comes to mind. Charles Woodson comes to mind. Those were the those were the incoming players. Free agency that made the difference in the world. And I think that the last number I saw they were 26 million over the cap. I think they got some work to do. They're gonna let some players walked Kevin King for sure. Um, Cory Lindsley. Unfortunately, I think they've got a franchise tag. Aaron Jones something they never do, but I think they should do it and they got to do everything that they can to get J. J. I hope Aaron, you know, stands up and passes the hat amongst the players that just got big contracts. They figure out a way to get him there. But most importantly, I worry, and I think a lot of these players come two teams. Because they have a personal relationship with somebody, and I don't know. Who JJ knows on the team. But if you take a look at basketball a lot of these players, they're swapping teams because of the relationship they have with one another. And I hope that's going on behind the scenes and then it'll make it happen. Yeah, That's Tom. It's a really good call. Stay warm up there in Naperville Shout out to downtown Naperville. Great set of restaurants down there like 50 restaurants in like a four block area. I miss it, but not this time of year. Um, you make a lot of really good points about the Packers. Look, if they're gonna open up cap space I That's the first I've looked into the Packers captures. I haven't looked into the cap situation for any of these teams. That aren't the Eagles or the Saints, like the Eagles and the Saints are so far above the cat that they're they're choked by it, And I don't think the Eagles are in the mix for JJ. What I say all that to say that most of the other teams in the league I think we're in a situation where if they need to find the room to get J. J what they can make it happen. And my guess is Green Bay is going to be a team that doesn't need to be at the the far You know, more lucrative end of the prison financially. My guess is that's going to be a team where JJ has a little bit of flexibility when it comes to his contract in his salary cap number. I loved your point, Tom about The last two Packer Super Bowl wins. I love parallels like that. That's a really, really fun point and interesting point a really easy talking point for radio hosts. Up in Wisconsin of JJ does come there..

"There know what's going on, and they got the communicated. I just don't understand when they've run that formation three different times. You said the line back out there three different times. You get the same results. He gets past the linebackers. That time the Sean wants and made them pay. No well seasoned The guy. You just mentioned it when he sees Johnson matched up on a linebacker. He's going there. Johnson, three catches 47 yards and a touchdown so far, this one Shot Watson 59 70 yards and two scores. 22 14 Houston leads Detroit 10 18 to go here in the first half lines will get it back Jamal Agnew back deep for them. Airfare in with a kick. This will not be returnable. Yeah, it'll sail eight yards deep into the end zone and out would come Matthew Stafford in the offense, trailing once again 25 yard line. Lives jumped out to a seven. Nothing lead. Pick six by J. J. Watt Missed extra point made it 76 Lions, then coughed up the fumble. Houston took advantage of a short field took the lead 13 to 7 Lions came back, Take lead 14 13 after takeaway of their own. Now, Houston's jump back on top 22 14. Out of the huddle and to the line. Stafford up under center single back Adrian Peterson. Stafford's got It gives the Adrian Peterson tries to bounce it outside, and he has met right in the line by Zach Cunningham. Goodness Gracious is he started 63 to 38 4th year. And he just met Adrian Peterson and stood him straight up the line of scrimmage fifth tackle of the day for him, and they also have to be aware of their safeties to Romeo. Cornell likes to bring.

"11 10 to go in the first quarter knows score Lions about to get the ball for the first time after a 41 yard punt by Brian Anger, the Lions will start at their own 15 yard line. Matthew Stafford, the quarterback, 2500 and 81 yards through the air 17. Down seven picks. Adrian Peterson started running back today. No DeAndre Swifty's out again with a concussion. Marvin Jones, Marvin Hall, the receivers TJ pockets into tight end first intense. Stafford has the snappers and give the Peterson starts left cuts right gets tripped up and maybe got about a half yard look like Peterson was about to bounce out to his right. But he got tripped up by Zach Cunningham, the NFL's leading tackler. We'll call it a game of water that'll bring up second nine. Cunningham's an interesting guy. 101. Total tackles that you mentioned got very long arms for Middle backer. It does just enough. They're one on one in the hole with Peterson to trip him up second out of nine for the 16. Lions will come out of the huddle in the I formation. Peterson's the tailback, single receiver to the right go in motion across the formation of the left. That's Mohammed's to do just came off the practice squad. Here's a gift. Peterson straight ahead, tries to spit in the hole this time, and there's nothing there hit right in the line of scrimmage and driven backwards. So the Texans picking up on what they did a week ago against New England, two runs by the Lions, two stops by Houston generally third and long, coming up with And they're sticking with that four man front. That's what they did against New England to stop their third overall rushing attack. And right there. Whitney Merle merciless. He does a good job setting the ads. Cunningham again cleans it up from the inside, So it'll be 3916 trips. Right? Single man left. Carry on. Johnson checks in now to Stafford's left. Stafford back in the shotgun goes to the heart count. Play clock, is it eight? Stafford, waiting. Left foot in front of right takes the snap. He's back to past Stafford looks rush Come, Stafford steps up, dumps it over the middle Hawkins and makes the catch runs out to the 25 yard line stretches out the football. He's gonna have the first down. Made sure to reach out to get the ball to the 26 yard line. It will be again a 10 on the catch and run by Hockett Sit at a first down for the Lions. Really Nice job by Matthew Stafford to step up in the pocket was collapsing on both sides of them finds his open target. Who now is their number one target. We look at T. J. Hart Haakenson without swift and without Holiday pockets. It has to be the guy. That's why it leads the team in reception 40 coming into this game, you mentioned no holiday. No Danny Amendola today. Those guys both dealing with hip issue, so TJ Hawkins, in the first round pick a year ago, has stepped up to receivers right Single man with left Stafford under center on first intent from the 26. Here's the Snap Stafford back on a plate. Fig wolves right sets his feet between the hash marks now checks it down left by Johnson on the sideline, and he steps out of bounds here on the near side of the 31 Yard line. That would be a game of five. I've coverage provided on that play by Justin Reed and knocks him out of bounds. It'll be second out of five. It's really amazing When you look at Stafford had to be his most challenging three weeks. He's on the Copen 19 list a few weeks ago. Now he's dealing with the thumb injury. I see He's got it taped up again today. It's amazing how accurate he's been, even though he hasn't practiced for the last three weeks and is dealing With that handed live to show a pistol. Look here. Two receivers right one left pockets. Emotions from left to right. Stafford takes the snap Turns give Johnson Johnson's gonna flip it up around back to Stafford on the fleet Flicker, he looks goes deep down the field, got a man wide open cut of the 45 down the first side numbers 42, the 32 the 20 and finally pulled down inside the 20 yard line around the 17. They went back to teaching Haakenson, who was all by himself along the far side numbers. It's a game of 52 nice execution by The Detroit Lions. Lonnie Johnson gets lost in coverage He bites on the play fake and their TJ he slips behind for the big game lives, Missus play a week ago. They get it today on Thanksgiving that was carry on Johnson to Jamal Agnew to Matthew Stafford to TJ Hock. It's a way to the 17 yard line. First intent slot left single man Right ball, The far side right hash. Stafford moves up under center Jason had been to the fullback comes in motion into the backfield. From wide to the left. Stafford takes the snap. He's back. Playthings sets his feet has top looks those for the end zone in complete penalty flags all over the place. He was trying to find Marvin Jones that it looked like Jones got grabbed. Coming out of his break. Bradley Roby was in coverage. Yeah, Roby a step behind on the play. Shawn Smith is our referee today. Oh, there's two files on the play both by the defense outside defense number 52 that penalties decline pass interference. Defense number 21 ball, the place that spot of the foul automatic first now. You said that your gifts this holiday cattle, the United States Postal Service to go the distance to bring you closer. USPS priority you so Robbie gets called for pass interference that turns into a 15 yard penalty. It moves the ball down on the two yard line, where the Lions will have a first goal as Lions offense that was shut out a week ago. Looking for points right off the bat High for evasion. Peterson is the tailback bit the lines up in front of him. Stafford takes the snap handoff. Peterson running between the hash marks diving toward the goal line. Signal yet they're gonna say he's down short, just shy of the goal line. Call it to run a one for Adrian Peterson. It'll be second down in gold. It looks like they're having spotted inside the one that Peterson came out with his hands up. He thought for sure he broke the plane to the goal line. Wonder if he's trying to look and Patricia say, Hey, take a look at that. I think I've broken the Lions are taking their time here. Looks like Peterson's knee was down Jim before he broke the plane. His left knee looks down. He came out convinced he got over that plane Lions inches away. They'll stay in the I formation. We tied into the ballgame. Here's the snap By Stafford handoff. Peterson angles right this time and plunges into the end zone for a touchdown. So after 15 consecutive scoreless possessions, lions take their opening drive today and find six Peterson plunges in from what you are now his third touchdown run of the year. The Lions take a six. Nothing lead came right back to it to the other side. Straight league play gets a good fuck blocked by his fullback Jason Kamina able to power through for the score. So Matt Prater will come on for the extra point trying to get the Lions a seven up the leaderboard is that have to feel good for Detroit. After all that frustration from a week ago. Nice play calls by Darrell Bevell. Because one thing Houston does are they're susceptible to his trick plays. New England tried numerous ones because they overplay it. They get the big play. And the reverse past flea flicker and Haakenson puts him down there. Nice play calling and drive by Darrell Bevell, the OSI ever just waiting to get confirmation from upstairs that it was indeed a touchdown run. That confirmation has come on out. Traitor who is 24 out of 24 on P A. T s this year will come on trying to make it a seven. Nothing lead. Jack Fox is the man that will hold it. Here's the snap. The ball is down. The kick is on the way it is that no veranda and it is good..

"Now. So I like that I you know, I I I commend him for that. I just kind of feel bad for Josh Rosen cuz remember when he was with the Cardinals and they were already selling off his jersey and these were like fifty percent know like 80% off home. In Goods locally, and then it was like the second coming of Kyler Murray and it was just that mess I couldn't feel like Josh Rosen has kind of gotten a shity shake he has and he is he's a talented quarterback wage like the guy sucks. So I hope that he flourishes in this position and that organization will you know further his career because you know, Tom Brady's not going to last forever for maybe he will I don't know. gosh guys an anomaly, I don't understand it. That's magic being the starter to have been the backup. That's okay. If I can do right clowning to the Titans song you do. Okay. I'm I'm a little pissed about the DeAndre Hopkins situation because he left the Texans because they weren't willing to sign him an extension. But the Texans signed linebacker Zach Cunningham 258 million dollar extension is money. They could have used up some pictures DeAndre Hopkins. That's Fucking bullshit Texans fan.

"CBS If you want to get in Please do top of the hour. We'll take some more phone calls. The question I posed. We got a couple good ones. Last segment. I don't know that I agreed with the callers, but I like their moxie. Because truth be told, when I asked you to When I asked you to give me sort of your perspective on the over under for season win totals for your team. If you're a fan of that team, you're going to be more inclined to take the over. I like the over on text in 7.5 wins. I'm a fan of the Houston Texans. I think 7.5 wins for a team with Shawn Watson is a ridiculous win total, so I would come on a show like this touting the over But I'll take info on the over or the under for your team. If you're in an NFL city route for an NFL team, eight by 5 to 1 to four, CBS I want to hear from you. It's another good way. We can help preview the NFL season, which gets started on Thursday. Speaking of the taxes, it involves the Texans, Texans in the Chiefs. This Thursday get the season kicked off and as of yesterday will now involve the two quarterbacks the two players with the largest contracts in the history of the league, facing off against each other for the third time in their careers, the third time in less than A calendar year. DeShaun Watson versus Patrick Mahomes. And joining me right now is somebody who's covered the Texans since they since they became a team and someone has covered the NFL for the better part of four decades, John McClane from the Houston Chronicle. Joining me on CBS Sports Radio, John Really appreciate you making time on a Sunday again, my friend. How are you? I'm great, Shawn. Always a pleasure. Thank you very much. Yes. So, John, you were you were on that zoom call yesterday. And you, of course, have been following this story and reporting on this story from the time that the two sides have been talking, I guess just before we get into the nuts and bolts in the detail of it, Just your reaction to not only the news yesterday, but just the way that everything was executed in terms of You know DeShaun Watson accepting that contract and getting the congratulations from everybody that there really is a big part of his life. Yes, it wass and it came down exactly like we've been predicting almost 40 year average four years standing at one point wads unwanted braised. So he died after 2025 that want to get it done before the season started, and they did. Texans. Now every side four key players with the Marshal Islamic Council Zach Cunningham, and now, Watson, and that sends a message to their other players. If you're a good team, mate, you're a good guy. You are coward you produce. You got a chance for a financial windfall, and Watson certainly did. Leadsom call yesterday in which they brought on Davos waiting just in bar Lander. His buddy is I school coach, Michael. Very kid. He met through the make a wish Foundation. Of course, his mother. And his family back home in Gainesville, Georgia, and he cried like a baby and couldn't talk. I mean, it was so emotional I remember when Aryan Foster signed an extension. And we were asking him about his. We asked him about his family and his mother. Specifically, he started crying. People love to say, guys in that situation. These so humble That they can't control their emotions I think is great. Especially guys like that, John because I think Aryan. I think Arian into Sean are very similar from the standpoint of publicly they're both pretty cool customers, you know, and they're guys who I think You know, don't publicly let the emotions get the best of them good or bad, You know for Arian up to that point, you know he was three years in into Shawn's three years in and I think that's what's so jarring about something like that. Is it to Sean is a guy who doesn't really get rattled in any situation. I'm not saying he got rattled yesterday, but he he doesn't He's not a guy who wears emotions on his sleeve. Necessarily. It's I thought it was really cool. Seeing that I'll say you got rattled yesterday, right there of zoom and he did get rattled by the the impact of the moment and I don't know about you shine somebody gives me A four year contract in 156 May and I'm a choir like a baby, too. Yeah, no doubt about it. John McClane Joining me on CBS Sports Radio. John, you touched on something there that I think is interesting. You mentioned the Texans and them rewarding not just to Sean. But Laramie, Tunsil Whitney merciless. Zack Cunningham. You know, I'll go back as far as Nick Martin early in the season last year, their center all guys who've gotten now we paid but paid pretty handsomely near top of the market for each of their positions. How much harder does it come for? Bill O'Brien to be able to To do that and promise that two guys now that they're paying Laramie Tunstall in Dijon Watson. These massive deals well, especially with God drive with the salary gap going to go down, but it's going to go way up. After that, when that new network television contract kicks, and there you two are 96 million per team. Now there's talk to take it even double it. With the network TV deal. ABC may come back the streaming rights And so they'll be at the Capitol go up and they'll be ableto pay their players. Everybody doesn't get paid, but that it sends a good message a long time ago and orders general manager told me If you're goingto over pay over pay, your players don't overpaid players who come from other teams. That's not the message you want to send. John McClane joining me on CBS Sports Radio, said John That's an interesting Segway into a team that you also I know cover pretty closely and you do a lot of radio in Nashville, and you've covered every snap of the first five years of Jadeveon Clowney's career. That was obviously a guy that the Texans didn't feel similarly about that they do about Watson and Tunsil and so forth..

"Monday is the following Wean Dang. Oh I'll see how that goes no. I don't think we have anything absolutely not but especially in the NFC south we'll see if Atlanta can hold onto their head. Coach heard that Mike McCarthy interviewed for the Carolina Panthers head coach John. Please let him Newton back all my gosh. Yes as we found out from Green Bay after he left. Iran was running the show there and if he comes Carolina Cam Newton is certainly not equipped to run a team. Like that like Aaron Rodgers is well at at least with Cam. Newton's leadership the whole team will have a good style or at least style on over the good and you know funky hair who get all that straight now. Now that'd be his leadership the important things in football that's important hell got the all twenty two film Review Don for Houston Texas game. It was very interesting very interesting interesting but surprisingly I got the video up on Youtube and I was actually surprised this funny when I do these things. I have no idea how long they're going to be because after hours and hours and hours I was watching it. I can't remember how video clips Don and everything so it was not until up. Start putting together. That could see how long it is and this is one of the shorter ones I've done but it was one of the more interesting games is to watch so that was very strange. If there was a couple of video clips at I I know I did. But they ended up not being in the video. I don't know what happened to him so you know I was doing this. We we had family over house will people so you can hear all the background all kinds of stuff a tremendous trying to do all day yesterday to. He's a Christmas Eve couldn't do it. Yeah we had people all in here just making all kinds of noise and some of the family is read aloud anyhow but so I did said Tuesday got most of it done in finished it up today and I was really surprised with a Thursday. I didn't do anything yesterday during Christmas but I was really surprised. And how little how few clipped Hijab said it was very interesting and then I was missing a couple of clips disappeared. So I'll talk about those clips here in just a second. All right do you remember what our summary was. Instant cast go ahead. Lay it out there with what we see what we see. The rats were horrible and it was a game that we lost next Houston. Texans didn't necessarily win that game. We just Kinda gave it away after watching all twenty two. I'll tell you this. The rest were actually worse than we default. If you can believe that. I'm not surprised this is. This is a quick summary of everything the the refs were absolutely elite. Trash absolutely trash. I think I can't remember which game it was awhile back but I think we had a really bad ref game. I WANNA say it was New Orleans. Seattle maybe Acura but I think we had quite a few screw ups by the wrath. I want to say nine or fifty something like Dan of anyway anyhow in this one account twelve. Wow Yeah. That's a lot that's a lot and we'll go over them in detail here. In a moment the Texans played with more energy than we he did how interesting so that was kind of like the New Orleans Games. Yes yes. We're very flat. Especially the second game. Our defense played well. Well we know that the offensive line played well but they just didn't play with oath that they they Gripe Tech James. I mean the few snacks acts they got those were Jameson Fault for scrambling around I think three are it was they. Were not pressuring him. In our offense landed a great job with dominance myth just just basically totally shutdown merciless without a lot of effort. I think Mercilus got buying twice now only once and I could take an might have been twice but neither one of them really affected the play. Jensen played really well. There was some good blocking but but generally I mean we shut their defensive line down and they did a lot of blitz up there number forty thirty one Zach Cunningham back taxes. He's good so as their nose. Tackle Jira DJ reader number ninety eight These are two guys. We did not pick up long. When we watched watched some of the Texans Games matter of fact the people we thought might would be good at? Actually we were totally wrong about their defense of their cornerbacks star. Receivers like Glue Jameis Jameis Winston had very few open receivers almost every pass. He threw a tight window. That's crazy it explains a lot Li- through so many interceptions because I mean he was just throwing no matter if they were covered or not because they were always come basically. That's interesting because they're ranked so low as far as passing defense. It makes you wonder. I wonder if the game plan wasn't good. If they stepped up their play if our receivers you know because we had our number one number two were out if our receivers just couldn't get space. I don't know but they were. They stopped doing like glue. It kind of looks like our secondary our secondary played very well are defensible. Played very well. We pressured to Shawn Watson quite what a bit. Not as much as I would like to see of course but he is hard to press her that because he's a mobile quarterback he can usually escape and that is his number. One thing is a mobile quarterback recommend. We really kept him in. Check Him Deandre Hopkins. He's a mobile quarterback and he does just like Jameis Winston. Sometimes he would scramble for no reason and he would get you know run into Zack's and he was missing guys open downfield not say it reminded me almost exactly of Jameis Winston except to watch them has a little bit more grace. He doesn't look liking thinking newborn draft when he's running around got a little bit more speed to him. The Take David played very well. I would say he was the best player on the field. You know this is this is gonNA sound really really strange our worst unit and I think this is what hurt us the most was special teams. Now we were talking about. I was like why are they. They haven't done back their return punts kickoffs and then they did and he just wasn't getting anywhere and nobody was able to get anywhere. We hardly any yard. It wasn't until it blockers. We had an appointed this out in the video. Fifty one mentor thirty. Four Adams thirty-seven Wilkins and twenty four Stewart. Were all guilty of not blocking a single person on punts and kickoffs sometimes even almost every punt and kickoff. They were just guys not blocking anybody where they within our were they Brian. I wouldn't say they weren't trying to just like they have asked it. I wouldn't even say they weren't given effort. They were just not executing well. Yes let's let's. Let's say that there was one kickoff right up scored a field goal in the first quarter. I think it was mazzy. Would want to mentor. I'll put it on the video. A two of them on the right side aligned Argh is one of them was mentor. Remember that just let three guys run right past them and the returner just gets let's clobber bio is very strange. They didn't block a single person. There was actually two points where we had two guys on the governor of Kevin Minter and Adams one time we had two guys front blocking one guy that that one guy for the Texans. Just rain right between Minter atoms they didn't put latently handling. He just ran right between rain down. The field made the tackle who's got caught. Bought another play another pont. I want to say it was Mazzy Wilkins and mentor. This time. The guy goes around him. You know it was two guys on two guys on Goner. He runs around them. They turn around and start chasing him and another Houston Texan Texan. Guys comes running up right behind them and third looking at the guy that ran past them and the guy that is behind them ends up making a tackle. I mean they were just turned around and blocked. The Guy can't block guy in the back. Why even care? If he's running past you just turn around the block somebody else but he had the guy was running right behind them. Them and then just veered left. Quick made the tackle so our special teams unit has got to step up. There was one where Ryan Smith is usually are special teams guy guy. He did not a whole lot in this game. I want to say that Houston special teams. They pay a lot of attention to their special teams. We don't seem to Brian. Smith twenty nine. I was running down the sideline as a gunner is blocking and the guy. He was blocking number thirty three grabs him and pulls into the ground right in front Aref right. This is one of the twelve that I'm GonNa talk about here in a minute. And thirty three goes and he ends up making the tackle and you see Ryan Smith Walk Up to him and stick his finger anger in his face. The very next punt thirty three is running down the Field Ryan Smith runs over two men. Grabbing by the Jersey inches yanks him straight meeting face as plant into the ground and that no. That's another one of the twelve so he got his revenge. Our special teams use unit. Did Not play okay well and it really was a difference in the game it because this was a very close game this was an inches matter game right behind Ville. I'm going to put James Winston. He did really good with you. Know making some very difficult passes but he was scrambling out of the pocket too much when he didn't need to like I said our offensive line did a great job giving him clean. Pocket's hold on pressure on anybody just seem to have those happy feet this game and he doesn't seem to affect him when he has the happy mm seems like the Games where he's had a poor performance. He's been very flighty like sat. Yeah you get skittish but he did that too much and he made poor decisions decisions one of the decisions he made. What did I? I'm not really Nakajima's for this kid. Because like I said I mean these cornerbacks glued receivers and William James was did did a great job and we were within three. I mean it's not like we got stomped and despite the four interceptions we had the chance to win it right. Which is what I'm getting to next? We got the ball with. I think it was twenty. Six twenty nine seconds left in the fourth quarter. We were down on our goal line. We had the drive all. We need with a field field goal so we had to drive. Sixty yards will say in twenty nine seconds James Hikes..

"Titan's account and just click that pay as we play option that'll get you all set if you have any questions you can call our office at six one five five six five forty two hundred option one and your ticket rep will be happy to help you but we'll get to all set up coach Mack had we do that's the best guest ever so what a class gas we're now having guests during your say gaster must segment with all kinds of information alright I thought Steph did really well so I want to turn to you and have you do well about who you thought or what you thought went well in the game in Oakland to ME Mike it was a collective effort of the entire team the coaching staff first of all if women a game plan travel across country make tweaks to that game plan during the course of the game and and win a critical a a C. conference game with playoff implications while missing some really key elements in the secondary special teams and some players on offense dealing with some issues that you're going to deal with it at this time of year I think the the the the guys that were called on to fill in spots for our starters that were missing did an admirable job and to me this was more than a team victory this was a total program in mind set victory one ask about the offense in this is a true coach Mack question wire things working so well when the Titans don't huddle and Ryan Tannehill makes the call at the line of scrimmage it seems like he's checking them into good plays right let's go through this all right Arthur Smith in his office to go to staff there done an excellent job of putting together game plans explored opponents defenses during the week and then having Ryan Tannehill needs are often see group executed on game day look Mike when a quarterback is changing plays at the line of scrimmage it's a result of a week's worth of practice and planning depending on the looks the defense will present you offensively based on down and distance personnel group feel position separation of score xterra the quarterback and the entire office they're given that game plan and then when you use tempo you get the office in the best look run to run past a run run the past that has been worked on it implemented throughout the week of practice and preparation nothing happens at the line of scrimmage by chance just know that everything happens as a result of excellent design preparation and execution good stuff coach we have not seen the Houston Texans yet which is really hard to believe but one thing about them that his change is the head coach bill o'brien is the de facto general manager so what stands out to you about how the Texans have shaped to this roster might as you well know bill o'brien's been head coach Houston Texas since twenty fourteen since then he's had a major influence on the entire make up of the roster even before he was the de facto not general manager he was deeply involved in acquisition both but draft and free agency and the final fifty three make up for this roster to me the philosophy has stayed fairly consistent alright let's talk about the show on watch and now his third season as the Texans quarterback two things I want to ask you about what's the number one how do you see him involving into what's the challenge in the Titan's defending deshaun Watson this on what's in the dynamic player as a leader as a quarterback he was a Clemson and eight and he's continue that path is professional he's athletic he's fearless he's competitive and he's productive he's a hard out at the plate he really is he also elevates the play of those around him he's a difference maker on game day the Texas a beat the pagers the cheese and the raiders pretty good you know pretty good football team they've also lost to the Panthers cults in the Broncos there one factor that mitigates all of that is to Sean Watson he's a problem deandre Hopkins has been a problem for the Tennessee Titans over the years six career games with more than one hundred yards receiving you can't stop him your only hope to contain him how do you do it Hopkins to ME Mike is one of the most physical combat catchers in the game even though size wise he's not over powering size wise but he's an excellent route runner he's hard to handle man to man and Watson is going to target him regardless of what type of coverage you put on it because single inning double if you can kick time you can combination coverage and you have to be very physical with him you got a spot tackle him you gotta be willing to to contest every time combat kit to the end because that's how he plays are you surprised how effectively the journeymen Carlos Hyde has run the football in the tax and I think I think Carl sides being used very judiciously in this office coupled with the play action threat and they all schedule ability of the quarterback he presents a down to down conflict for defense because coupled with the receiver group you have to defend all three elements every down on defense today being Clowney is in Seattle JJ waters on I. O. R. how has defensive coordinator Romeo canal change this Houston unit with their two biggest names call look Romeo as always a nice job of game plan specific defensive game plan of opponents he's always been able to craft viable defenses even when missing valuable pieces he's going to take away your prime threat and force you to be his defense some other way regardless of who he has available he makes an office work for success the Texans leading tackler former Vanderbilt Commodores Zach Cunningham what you see from Cunningham Cunningham is very active he's got good ranges of discipline player that he understands our defensive scheme and the adjustments that Romeo give them every week to week you have to be able to faithfully get a body on him consistently because it's hard to fully all right Monday Night Football in minutes he lie manning returns as the giants quarterback is New York travels to Philadelphia does manning make a try on foot returned to the lineup coach Mack no no filly wins I mean the line needs more than he has right now currently on this giants roster I've been on the defensive staff of Jim Schwartz calling defenses versus the lie shorts he knows how to give him problems he lies got problems night seventy at Kentucky coach Mack do he did great all right seventy eight kids one more time Titans season ticket members how do they opt in to make sure they have their tickets if the Titans host a playoff game.

"And I have to tell you the moment I knew I was going to be sitting in here with you on on on Saturday morning. I thought I've got to get males take because being a Kentucky guy. You know, we don't we don't get a lot of NFL prospects. Okay. But this year there's a time and there's one right at the top of the board. Josh Allen is sitting there on most projections. They having going second to the San Francisco forty Niners. But really he is right there with Bosa for four number one. And so I would ask you what do you think of Josh Allen? And then why take Bosa first or would you not? Well, both is the dynamic player. He's done it throughout he now had the injury as a senior in high school with the injury this year. So the durability will be a concern. But you factor that in as I said, there's some guys who have been hurt in college. Some that get in the NFL never have an injury. Some guys are injury free. And then all of a sudden I training camp, boom. They're done for a year or they get hurt their second year. So I I don't think the injury factor is as big a deal with some make it out to be a talking point. It's a reason why you might say. Say go some different direction if they do it's because of the durability concern. However, you slice is going to go one two. And I think right now you'd have to put boasts at one Josh Allen had that one great great year. He was good. The other years. Seven sacks. Yeah. He's got almost double digit tackles lost this year. Spectacular across the board. He was the focal point. He was the dominator. He was unblock Qabail. And he's got all the skill set numbers. You want all the workout numbers you want? So you can't say workout warrior the production. Equates the what you would expect from a player that gifted talent from an athletic and physical standpoint Matt so to answer your question if I'm the Arizona Cardinals. I would take Nick Bosa just because he is the way Benz the way he plays how difficult he is to handle and Alan is as well. But I just think Bosa slightly over Allen and then Allen to the forty Niners or the jets both of whom need him the other forty nine deforest Buckner had a great year. If you bring in Alan with Armstead and Thomas now, you got something going in the front seven if you're the jets, obviously, you know, what they need edge rusher number one on their list. So I think for Allen he goes into top three but trying to define which one of those three teams. He ends up with Matt is really difficult at this point. Can I ask you? I would like to ask you some some dumb questions if that's okay sort of the person who watches the draft. But doesn't know it as intricately because I've always had these questions over the year it plays out a little bit with Josh Allen. I was looking at the top ten projected picks and almost all of them come from a powerhouse program. Ohio State, Alabama LSU probably the one program. That's maybe not as much as put in a lot of players in the league Mississippi State, and then there's Kentucky sitting there with Josh Allen d. NFL teams when they're looking at and you have a guy from a Delaware like the or Kentucky that's had a year where they've jumped up do they consider that? Or is it just saying I don't care about all that. It's about this guy. What he is. Well, in some cases, it can help you always say Bill, Bella chicks liked Alabama and Florida players. Ozzie Newsome him when he was running the Baltimore. The Baltimore Ravens all those years. Now, Eric the cost GM Ozzy always gravitated Alabama players. But in the case of Kentucky the way this program has been built stoops, and as you said great recruiting as well with marrow. All of a sudden now, you're in the SEC, you're putting your your. Tests every week. You're you're you're tested. And I I think also you're a team you're taking a team to a level. They haven't been and you're the cornerstone, you're the franchise defensive player that means something Vanderbilt Vanderbilt sense guy. So the NFL every year battle to get to six wins. And they do a heck of a job for what they have to work with in terms of not having the elite recruits coming into the other programs. Have yet Vanderbilt finds a way to go toe to toe with a lot of these teams every year, and it's testimony to their coaching and the way these kids play. And how smart they are. And some of these kids are overachievers, but they're also talented kids. Zach Cunningham couple of years ago. Second round pick. Nice career was so far with the Houston. Texans. Look at the job that Jordan Mathews has done in the NFL is a receiver. So again, Jay Cutler out of Vanderbilt. So I don't think Kentucky. Not that long ago. Tim couch. Went number one out of Kentucky with how that offense. So they've had successful players move into the NFL. They have a lot of them coming off this team. You're talking about a team now that had all that success with that success comes hydra Lonnie Johnson the corner could be a second round pick. Mike Edwards a safety could be in the third or fourth round range some offensive lineman getting drafted the tight end Conrad. Benny snow. We've talked about the running back. So there's a lot of Anthony's on this football team. That are going to see them be drafted or drafted free agents off this Kentucky team this year. And they're stars you notice team inside. Now, there's a receiver down there that can fly and there's an offensive Lima centered. It's pretty good. So they got they got guys even for the future that they're developing. They're going to be pretty high draft choices. Now, you got to combine this week. And of course, all eyes are going to be primarily on Kyle Murray. But if what are one or two guys that for you in particular, you really want? To see how they perform in the combine to really know where you wanna wanna slot them. I think at Oliver is is the the key is the weight and then not only the wait at the combine and a week throughout the draft. Does he maintain it? And the question is was he is going to be two eighty five. Everybody said whoops to seventy two during the year as you're going to be two eighty five at the combine then could he maintain to eighty five not only during the draft process. But during the year, that's why at Oliver at one point looked like the first or second pick now is around that fourteenth spot to Atlanta. I think as far as a running back trae beyond Williams at Texas. I and and if he runs great he had a phenomenal year for JIMBO Fisher, he jumps in Dexter Lawrence. Didn't play in the in the meaningful games at the end with the suspension. He is a freakish town if he has those big time numbers at three hundred and forty pounds he jumps heavily high in that defensive tackle group, especially with Jeffrey Simmons coming off ACL from Mississippi State and his stock dropping a bit. The Thompson safety at Alabama didn't have. A great second half of the season. They had the big place, but he's a talented kid. He test great. He could be in the late first early second round discussion. And as I said earlier, I want to see what handy Isabella UMass receiver retirement runs, fastest guy. Umass. But how does that translate to the rest of the draft class? We'll see when he gets the apples this week. Almost every year at the combine you get some guy that you guys know, but the average person does who becomes the story. I remember years ago. It was my namesake Matt Jones that ended up playing himself after a combine into a first round pick. Give me a guy that you think after the combine nobody's talking about. But we start talking about. Hakim Butler, Iowa State. There's a kid that Scott down the field. Ability separation is the key. If he with his height runs. Well, Matt he's gonna go. Hi. Butler wide receiver Iowa State. We'll keep that in mind that Kim Butler now you and I talked a little bit affair about counter. You would not throw if you were him right now. I wouldn't throw I wouldn't run either. And because you don't need to it's the most important things the interview and football IQ and being able to say, hey, I'm all about football, which we know he is now don't put yourself in a position where you're standing on the field in my opinion with somebody six four six five when you're five nine you don't need to be standing there next Daniel Jones, or or whoever it may be drew lock your Ryan Finley. You don't need that university. The show up medical look many. I talked to him interview. That's it that visual comparison be striking. If you standing there next to somebody six or seven inches taller than you. Everybody right now is talking about Duke and college basketball Zion. Other teams Kentucky Virginia Gonzaga, Tennessee have shot, but what team outside. Of the top five could make a run to actually win the tournament is our hot list next. What teams should you be thinking about for March that you're not now that's next on Dr Email on ESPN radio and ESPN app. Trying to figure.
