"A future injury by being sufficiently built up, but not so much that you are engaging in injury in the early going. Right. And of course, if that rationale. Hey, maybe we don't need so many games, maybe there are other ways to do drills and practices that's sort of a rationale that has been brought up as a reason to remove minor league teams and downsize the miners and I don't think that's a great thing for the sport as a whole. So even if it's a case of this is more efficient or there are ways that we could replicate this without playing games, it's also good to play games even though spring training games can be a bit dull after the initial thrill of it wears off, maybe more interesting this year than usual, what with all the rules changes, but still, if you're in the area, you want to go see those games. It's good to have baseball games available. In order to ensure the health of the sport of baseball, it is good to play baseball games and have baseball teams playing them. Yeah, and the local economy here in Arizona and benefits for it. Build more stadiums for owners way. Just like chill. I'll take bad traffic in the valley if servers here can get tips. That's fine. Yes. And if players can make at least minimum wage, that'd be nice too. So wouldn't it? I wanted to say just prompted by that kenta maeda pitch tipping pitch come incident. That brings to mind something else that's happening to this spring, which is that pitchers in some cases are calling their own pitches, which is a possibility we discussed back on episode 1725 that was a lot of episodes ago, but that was before this specific implementation of the device was permitted. And now it's being tested the spring with an eye toward potentially approving it for regular season play, and it's really interesting, I think, and we've seen a lot of pictures doing it. Corbin burns and Shohei Ohtani and Alex Cobb and Joe musgrove before he broke his toe and Luis severino and Max Scherzer, who has previously said he doesn't think pitch should be legal, although he acknowledges that it helps. And severino called calling his own pitches the greatest thing of all time. So it seems to be getting rave reviews from the pitchers who have tried it and it seems like we will start to see this and I have mixed feelings, I think, about this happening on a widespread basis. Of course, there's always been some calling of pitches by pitchers and stories about Greg Maddux doing it and Zach cranky doing it. It's not even a story. It's not like apocryphal. You can see that cranky doing it. And footage in past games. But obviously it was tough to do that. Really? When the hitters could see exactly what you were doing and hear what you were saying and pitch come, not supposed to work like that unless Tony Walters has the volume too high. What do you think the implications of this will be or would you want to do it if you were a pitcher? What are the drawbacks and possible advantages here? I mean, I suppose that if it is properly communicated, you continue to avoid getting crossed up, right? Like that would be, you want to, it's always good for the catcher and the pitcher to be on the same page because if they're not bent they get crossed up. And then all kinds of nonsense can happen. So there's that piece of it. If there is any change in how you are feeling as a pitcher, like the midst of a start and you don't want to use a mountain of it, you can address that. Like if you get up there and you're like, oh, my feel for my sliders and what I thought it was, then you know that you're calling your own pitches, but like catchers notice things like famously. They're like no toers, you know? Yeah. And you can just tell your catcher like, hey, got up here. It doesn't feel right. Don't want to throw that one as much. I feel like it should be a collaborative project, right? I think that I see there being benefit in a picture being able to impart to his catcher like, hey, here's how I'm feeling stuff up here, and then they catch her being able to be like, here's how I see it playing. I don't feel like too much better than one in that scenario. It doesn't have to be a binary, right? It's a classic process. And I do wonder which part of the battery would have a better evaluation of the pitcher's stuff that day, right? Because the picture is the one throwing the pitches and knows how that feels coming out of the hands. But the catcher is maybe a little less biased about it. Less motivated, reasoning, going on there and less irrational exuberance, right? So you're right, maybe having both seems like better than having either one. And they still have that. It's not, again, it's not like all of the pitches have to be called by the catcher or by the pitcher. It can still be collaborative and the pitcher can just call some pitches. That's happened in the spring. It's just some pitchers will have used it sparingly during certain outings. So it doesn't have to be a 100% either way. And I mean, it feels like sort of an inversion of what the natural order of things has been, but I'm pro pitch come in general. I think has worked great. And I see some of the advantages, which, first of all, there's the pitch clock, right? So that's added time pressure. If you're worried about having to shake off calls and let's say you're down to your last few seconds and you don't have the time to spare and risk a shake off or have to commit to throwing a pitch you don't really want to throw, then the pitcher can do it. And I don't know exactly how the pitcher and the catcher will navigate that like figuring out I'm going to call this one. The pitcher overruled the catcher or the catcher will just see that the pitcher is doing it, right? But there's just less time to spare in general. So if you're down to the wire and the clock is ticking, then the pitcher can just set it and it doesn't have to be a back and forth. So I think it makes more sense with the pitch clock than it would without. I do think catchers can pick up on some things, pictures can't, not just about the stuff, but maybe they're paying closer attention to the hitters. They're seeing how a hitter reacted to something. They're seeing how they're standing in the box, how they're set up, right? That sort of thing that might be harder to pick up from the mound. And I guess it depends also who's been studying the hitters and prepping for this start. Now, on the one hand, catchers have it hard now because they have to handle so many different pitchers. On a staff at any given time or over the course of the season or in a single game, right? So if they have to not only know each pitcher stuff and then game plan for those pictures, that's a large cognitive load, I suppose in those catchers. And so if the pitchers were doing the bulk of that, maybe that would be a load off the catcher's mind. I don't want to further erode catcher responsibilities because we love catchers. We're already, we've already taken so much from them then. Yeah. We're about to take so much more. Potentially, right? I guess you could say preventing the running game might take on added importance for catchers and back picks being a part of the strategy now, but if we have robo ups or even a challenge system, you know, that's been the concern if we go to full robo ups, then it won't really matter how you receive pitches anymore. And that would be a big difference.

"So still a minority of the position player pitching appearances from last year that would have been ruled out by this rule. So I think you'd have to up it to say 12 or more, maybe if you really wanted to crack down, but this will at least stop the almost exponential increase, I guess it'll rain it in a little bit. Right, much, much like a quarantine zone. Really? Really stuck out the last of us, huh? It was affecting. Are you of course you are? I am, yes. I played the games, but I am watching. I read a bit of video game related journalism, courtesy of Juan Ben Lindbergh, but I have to wait until I had seen I had seen it, you know? I have to wait. It's quite moving for a video game based show that is about mushroom zombies. It gets you in your feelings in a way. I was not anticipating, especially after the Super Bowl. So anyway, I guess our takeaway here is that dick monfort giveth and he taketh away, you know? But yeah, I think any effort to staunch the use of position players pitching. It's just, it's out of hand, you know? It's so obviously out of hand. I regret that it had to get to a point where your Ritz thing that we used to enjoy it. It used to be fun. And then you'd get to the point where you started getting alerts from the MLB app, and it was like, I'm getting a lot of these. Somebody also, I don't want to, I don't want to make anybody feel bad. But somebody was a little asleep at the switch in terms of the notifications there because they went on a little longer than was probably advisable because it made me very aware of the frequency of position player pitching. And then we started seeing guys on a winning teams in blowouts and I want hands are Alberto to have a job, but not like this, you know? Yeah. Right. It's still fun from time to time. Brett Phillips makes it fun. Pools out there in his final season and gave him a chance to pitch or Yadier Molina. Sure. I'm up for that kind of thing. Sure. But yes, it's gotten to be too much and I think it is probably most galling when the margin is narrower. So this will at least eliminate some of the closer games when it's used when at least it's not as incomprehensible that there could be a comeback and we've had the conversation about whether there should just be forfeits before, but I'm fine with just throwing pictures out there the way that they used to and a lot of my objections to these things shortening games or having some measure to restrict position player pitching because teams have stopped using actual pictures. Structure your team and your picture usage a little bit differently to prepare for these eventualities. You know what you're getting into. So prepare yourself and I know that we've moved away from that and hopefully we're moving back toward that with limits on pictures that you can have on the active roster. But you know, you've got to plan ahead a little bit from time to time. And I think probably what makes it more annoying for people is that position player pitchers now, they were semi successful by position players. Early last year, they were actually doing surprisingly well, which was weird, but they don't really make much of an effort anymore because I think we've opened up the pool of position player pictures to almost anyone at this point. You don't even have to fake throwing hard. It's not like we're gonna only use guys who can throw in the hi 80s or something. So now people are just lobbing the ball in there, which, you know, sometimes people can have some fun with it. But when it's not Zach cranky throwing a slow curve, it's just someone maxing out at 55 or something. It's just not that educating to watch. And nothing's gonna be super entertaining to watch in a blowout, of course, but it does almost get to the point where it's like, are we making a mockery of the game here, which sounds very get off my lawn ish, but I think a lot of people have gotten to that point with the position player pitching. I have two thoughts here. The first of which is that you're absolutely right. Like the bar has been lowered to the point of being near the floor. It feels like now they're like, did you at one point in high school throw a competitive inning? Well, guess what? You get to get up on the mound. And we railed against pitchers hitting. And this is, I think, actually more insulting. Because, you know, it's so far removed from what we actually know pitching to be. And I would imagine Ben. Try this on for a slice. I feel like we should be. If the conditions are right and people are open minded, this feels to me like we could be entering the golden era of the long reliever, right? Because, you know, how different are long relievers than starters these days. Right. And I don't want to cannibalize like a zombie would, you know, innings that should be going to starters, but it feels like the very obvious solution to this problem is for teams to have respect for the multi inning reliever again. And to say, hey, you can go three, you know? And we're going to prioritize having one of you on the roster because it is a useful position to have us position a field is a little weird as a way of describing a picture, but that's an important role for us to populate in our bullpen. And so we should prioritize having a guy on the roster who's really understood traditional long reliever and if you opt not to do that, I don't want guys to get hurt and I think we always have to, you know, be mindful when we're talking about usage, what are we, what are we potentially opening the door to in terms of guys getting overused? But I'm okay with there being a little bit of a fatigue penalty on a bullpen that the team just doesn't plan for the inevitability where they're going to want a guy to like throw a couple in a meaningless game. I think that it's okay for there to be a little penalty there and we need to make sure it's dialed in right but the strikes me. Agreed. All right, so we have a preview pod today later in the episode we're going to be talking to Levi weaver of the athletic about the Texas Rangers before Levi, we will be talking to Mandy bell of MLB dot com about the Cleveland guardians before we do a couple other quick things. So we're in the point of the off season where the transactions mostly aren't super interesting and also we don't necessarily have to dedicate banter time to them because we're going to get to those teams sometimes soon in our preview series. So if you wanted to hear us talk about David Peralta to the Dodgers or a Christian Javier Bo Bichette extension we'll be talking about those teams in depth sometimes soon. But every now and then there's one that catches my eye like the Darvish extension did last time. Explain to me how Andrew chaffin gets a one year $6.5 million deal from the Diamondbacks going back to his old team. Is good. That is good. It's good. It's not good. No, it's part of it, but also the stats and the performance, which could be related to the mustache, but even independent of that. He's basically been pretty solid every season except 2020, which was 2020. And over the past two seasons, he is actually among left handed relievers the highest war guy? Among lefty relievers who have not started a game, actually he's second. It's Josh hayter who's a pretty famous pitcher. And then it's Andrew chafin. This is according to baseball reference war. And I think Andrew chaffin probably expected to get more than he got here because he opted out of an option with the tigers for another year in 6.5 million. And that's exactly what he ended up getting from the time it backs.

"All right, there it looks like the red flags are going to get past the raise. That never should have happened, but it looks like it will. Then they get the Astros and the middle of the Astros bullpen isn't the same. The asteroids are throwing or kitty and Luis Garcia and Zach cranky's in the bullpen and what this isn't even the rotation here is horrible. They get to the World Series and it's either the Giants or missing Brandon Belt or the Dodgers are missing max muncy and the brewers are missing no one, but Christian Yelich has been bad all year and then all of a goddamn sudden it's the same thing. And yet you still have Red Sox fans tweeting about how this feels like 2004 for the first time, ignoring that there was a 2007 and a 2013 and a 2018. And the 2013 team felt a lot more like 2004 because they were underdog randos in the last place projected nonsense squatted. I hate all of this and I hate that I'm gonna have to spend the next three weeks rationalizing it. It's way funnier when the Red Sox are beating up the rays. It's less funny when they've moved on and now they're getting closer to Peter. Yeah. And yeah, I don't know how red stuff like this is this is 2013 all over again. That's a 100%. There's nothing to do with 2004. It's just like we said, they'd like to keep the they like to keep the fake magic and the fake underdog story going. This is 2013 because nobody. I mean, look, like we said heading into this one, this team is not as bad as that team was that team was projected to come in last place. This team has the core of the 2018 team. It's the 2018 lineup without Steve pierce. And yeah, Mookie betts Steve pierce Mookie betts and oh yeah. Who else was on that team that did like insane things and then never heard from him again? Eduardo Nunez was really good. Now they have Kiki Hernandez who is breaking Red Sox postseason records out of nowhere. So like, yeah, hi, bloom, nice signing with hunter renfrow and Kiki Hernandez and whoever else, but like nobody he didn't sign these guys being like, oh yeah, they'll be like postseason legends for us. They'll be this is what it will turn out to be. Well, again, it's whoever people are using the fact that four Red Sox GMs have won the World Series since Brian cashman. That really speaks to the fact that you could throw any fucking person in a Red Sox uniform. They could win the world. Especially because Ben sharington was not good. He made so many bad moves for them. Terrible manager. John Farrell's a terrible manager and they just farted their way into the World Series that year. Mitch Moreland like Mitchell Mitch Moreland. Yeah. Yeah. Jackie Bradley junior is hitting one 32 this year. None of the people are at sex of let go, except for bets are good. Meaning they probably were not good in 2018, either, but they put on that Jersey and start breathing fire. That's why you need to squash them like a bug as soon as you can. Why I was rooting for the raise..

"Immediately. You think about who. Who's next if there's somebody next who's close like because the club he's in just about guys that have three thousand strikeouts in three cy young awards. Roger clemens yep steve carlton Greg maddux randy johnson page. Oh hey drew. Tom seaver measures. How many verner got very lenders. Not that i feel bad for him. But he's been fucked out of so many young. It's got her. Oh yeah yeah. Ver- lander has probably to say he's been screwed up to. Yeah verte lander leads major league baseball history. Cy young awards not one that he should have won. It's it's tough. Actors are becomes the nineteenth player ever with three thousand strikeouts. And the reason that you get excited celebrate that one speaks to longevity. It speaks to a rare combination of longevity and dominance so like translation to the football field like speed and power that rare combo of speed and power at a skill position Just an absolute animal. That is max. Scherzer max scherzer. The next guy up would be zach cranky. He's at two thousand seven hundred ninety. Nine right yeah and then after that would be clayton kershaw two thousand six hundred fifty three. I'm surprised i guess not really. Because he's he's thirty. Three years or shaw's a very interesting kershaw is a very interesting interesting subject in that question right there. What do you mean like. Does he get to three thousand does he. I thought you're going to say. Does he get the four thousand kershaw. He's thirty three right my making that up. No he's thirty three so he would need but like he just be like one of those dude pitches until he is forty in becomes a compiler at the end we'll healthwise that's my health. Wise he gets he gets he gets the three thousand three hundred more right. Yeah roughly yeah. There's no doubt how old is he. Thirty three thirty three okay. I thought he was older. Why did because he's been in the league since he was twenty he's been in the league since two thousand eight arts of kershaw. Greek you get three thousand maybe greek. He's more of a question hershel he needs. What two hundred. That's like two hundred. That's two more like he can pitch until he's thirty nine. He just might not want to like rank you would be the the classic case of like shut down in two thousand nine ninety nine. Yeah like i'm like dude. You're within your seventeen strikeouts away from three thousand. You're gonna come back. And i don't really care about that but he'd be on the record for saying i really do care about and i want it back. He said that no but remember like he was he talked about. Here's a guy. I don't know that. I really even wanna throw a no hitter. Like i don't want to deal with all the stuff that comes with it. And then he was like but it would be cool. Yeah i think. I think it's one of those things. Where if if he if he and his mind is ready to retire and he was less than twenty strikeouts away from three thousand. I don't think he's going to commit to a whole season just to get the like three thousand warming. I pinched because he's thirty seven this year. So if he's like thirty eight if he pitches next year and it's his age thirty eight season and he really feels like he's done. I don't think that he would pitch in his age. Thirty nine season just to get three k. but very well may walk into that room and negotiating a look. I got twenty more to go. I don't know how many starts it's gonna take but quite literally after. I punch the three thousand ticket. I'm out like i'm gonna i'm gonna punched out. You guys can play a montage. Whatever you wanna do shakes hands. And i'm done so have somebody up if you're okay with that. Where do i sign. I'd be here for every minute of that. Greek he three thousand k. Departure gone five nothing. What's that five. Nothing that hurts. I mean this dude is just throwing fastballs right down the cock you're gonna do. What do you do. he's He's about to. He's about to get ran over like a lawnmower. You know where. On more weight. I i was. I was letting you slop all over scherzer i i wanted to say. He doesn't have anything left. he's he basically threw a perfect game. I forget who it was like takata that leaned in and ruin his perfect game like he should already have a perfect game. He he's got two no hitters three cy young awards three thousand strikeouts. He's got a twenty strikeout game. There's only five of those. There's only four is who have done it. And he's got the world series. What's what does he have left to do. Like i said he had two legs the virginia. He's he's done that twice. He's he. Needed triple crown. If he doesn't he doesn't have a triple crown. But i don't i don't think he's ever going to have an er a title but he's he's led the league in wins and strikeouts twice in the same year.

"Sportstalk seven ninety big win jacob disease right big win so i posed the question and he And he was asked last night he said it was playing basically. He said the bowl bowling. But you can't we can't say it here. I said frustration. I'd just as soon had him be honest with you. When when when dusty goes out there and i don't know i didn't see the exchange on the mound did you. He sony took him out or take him out but they came. He came back into the dugout after the after the inning slammed his glove down. Okay right but on the on the mound mattress v. doug what. i'm saying. it was in the dugout right. Yeah it would. My point is we didn't see an exchange in the dugout knew and he threw his glove down and he was pissed so dusty probably expected to be a little ear. -tated and i would imagine old school i know she's managed a few guys that he managed max scherzer who had literally yell at him from the dugout. Don't come out here. And when he got out there. You'll see john the dugout. He's seen a few guys who was. My guy is a lackey. who man. Yeah he was. Just wanna fight you right. I would've wanted just him and his right constant just a battle all the time and no matter what what angels red sox i mean he was always just a pain in the ass to pull out of a game he could have given up back to back to back home runs and you come out to get him. He's like he just annoys you right. But i i understand the competitive fire. Now max scherzer. There are times when a manager sees max scherzer and you start to step up the dugout steps. It's like don't you dare come off that step and okay max bitches. Jags been in the league long enough to get it. But when you're it like. I said it's not the frustration. It's the team concept of understanding. Yes you want to say but this sounded like gay. I'm pissed in the future will be addressed later. Then tell me that later points okay i. You're dusty baker. You hear this brad. We're gonna get to you in a second so be patient my friend. What's your thought process. Truth thought the overall picture. I if i'm see i'm trying to put myself in the mindset of dusty baker. Says he's seventy three year old man's been around and seen so much probably doesn't care he probably is going to give it a day let the cooler heads prevail. Calm into the office. Put his arm around him telling me loves them. Says you know. Look the numbers. Tell us that you gotta take out after the second time through the order. I don't wanna pull you out. But that's just what we've pitched to jake september. Were doing our thing. we're trying to. We're trying to win this. Not we go help us win this division and last night. You gave us a chance to win a ballgame through five innings and we were comfortable with taking you out of that. That's what he's gonna do. You know what you're not going to boyd. Aj jay would have been different i think. Aj would have probably bought back right and dusty. Listen you know what last night is a spec in the sand for dusty baker. What he seen in quite frankly dusty probably deep down says if you ask him privately over a cold drink. Cold beer price. Say i'm okay with this fire. I don't want him. i wanna say bs. It wasn't even the. I think it's bull because that would be i if i'm the head coach i'm like man it's a you know what it's about time. I'm okay with little fire in your belly. Go up there. And time behi franchise oriented and also about. Well we'll see. I think you know where. I stand on that meaning to me. This is just me re. I may be completely off. But ray did lines of 'cause i don't get caught up in this. We for instance. Just apply to the texas tyler. Here in a second is like when they didn't practice and went had fun as a team and people are making a big let it go folks the the fact that they went last earlier in the weekend and went and had a teen pete carroll. Does you know what everybody says. Oh yeah great. Great for the team. All my gosh. They needed lane. Kiffin did it at. Sei all bonding moment. The texans because they're not very good and david. Kelly does it and guess what. What do you mean people panic. If they get their ass kicked in game one. It will not be anything. Win game one fresh legs. It may very well have okay. Cool dave coach. Kelly reward is is. There's no risk there. Did they know they're not. They're smart enough to understand their practice plan. So this little minutia crap that be chasing a ghost and turn a mountain from you know making a mountain out of a molding with that situation and this will get squelched quickly. And you're right dusty. This is why dusty baker's manager here one of them the ability to handle this type in certain situations. I'm about been around seeing it all. That's why they brought him any no. The controversy in the trash can stuff and when he was hired. Great baseball guy was hired for moments as the calming. This is this is why. He's here dusty being pissed about. It may be saying something. Hey next time you got an issue. Let's do it here. Let's not do in front of the media and that's old school bait. Listen cousin scream at me all you. But that's my biggest issue. Like i don't care about the competitive firearm. He sounded so selfish last night and time in place was horrific. And if i was a team-mate me. I would be pissed at him today because dude. We don't need this in the middle of september when we've got our eye on one thing at this point winning a damn pin it and going back to a world series zach cranky or carlos correa. These are the type of days you walk beside. Put your arm round and by yourself not part of the other team. Yeah and he said hey my man you give damn good for five innings. We keep getting that. You weren't gonna win a lot of games. I understand your frustration. Let's keep it moving. You're going to get more opportunities and simple and it goes away. This should not faster. And you're dusty would be the guy you're exactly right. No big deal. That was mine. I don't care that he said this is this is. This is all those things. I didn't like the address of a good question. But we're talking offseason that we and worried about the off season right now. That's the case and 'cause gracious up and rent rave every single time. Somebody asked him a question after he gets hit saying. Am i worth three hundred million now. You can't because it selfish so this is the time. When there's the check certain things the door right and like i said i am all about if i'm a coach and you come at me and you wanna yell and let's go dude. Lock the door. No big deal give you some data on the way out. We're good. this is competitive. I'm around you more nam my family. If you're those guys right so tyler. James click. We'll get him on today. What do you think. Brad comedy you next. It's i honestly you don't get to deal with the daily in clubhouse dealings general manager how are you looking at it from a team standpoint and a present and the future i would talk dusty and to be perfectly honest i would send them home for a week really out so you're missing your next. Don't you think that's overboard though on knock it allows you james. Click says today. I'll bet you james click says today. They'll handle that in house and that's the dusty dusty and british tromble handle that on their. I'll bet you james click just from mine. I don't know how jane. But as a gentleman i'll bet he says that's why he's the manager. They'll handle it. Because i don't think it was an insubordinate. I don't think it was subordinate. I think it was a little selfish timing. And they got him right in the emotion after a game right. Yeah but he's still had three or four six to five if this becomes a trend. I'm with. I'm on your like if he does it again at some point says home here not let me just say. This is gonna sound harsh. He's not good enough to be a distraction or art. Does that make you know. That's the reality of the situation. Is that we all can see it. He's here's the truth about it. He's not very good. He's an alabama compared yes average big league pitcher that is past the fifth best starter on this team. You don't pitch those guys. Deepen the ball ballgame right for me. I think it'd be a little premature to send him home yet. Tyler i get your thought but if this becomes a trend then it's dude. Listen now. you've got two choices you can go pitch. And when it's time don't question the manager in public. You wanna talk behind closed but when you will become bigger than the team in this situation or try to be so bad and i listen. I don't think it's gonna faster. I think that if dusty who's been seventies what has any seen in baseball right. Let's get to.

"Forty or fifty cents. Yesterday i had the over in this game nine seven final for the mariners so that was a nice pick their but money will come in against seattle. Quite a bit as we go forward. And then lastly we saw some twins. Money with baileigh. Ober against dylan sees dylan a guy with decrease spin rates here over the last little while so maybe the market kind of looking to fade him a little bit. Maybe that's what it was related to but the white sox did end up with that win there. Some light moves here for thursday. The total between pablo lopez zach f. One's gone down from eight to seven and a half for some day baseball in philadelphia. Some early evening baseball. I should say on the casteel line. Move in the game between the reds and the padres part of this one. I'm on kiss steel and the reds for the first five. That's a fate of riot. Weather's primarily but also louise casteel with a really good month of june so people kind of buying stock in him. Can't say that. I disagree with that. As his left on base percentage over the first two months of the season was very very low if he gets some positive aggression with that should be a much better pitcher here going. Forward jacob degrom and ian anderson get together today between the mets and the braves net is going up from six to seven out there in the betting market. So maybe the braves going to hit. Jacob degrom. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens in that one of the rockies are taking money today. That's a game. As i mentioned that i'm on. That's a fate of adam wainwright on the road. Completely agree with that line. Move on you can read about that one over at eighty s dot. Io and lastly leno. johnny cueto money on the giants today against the arizona diamondbacks. That's my other play for today. On the under nine in that one with merrill kelly going for so take a look at the weekend preview here and we start with the dodgers and the national's tony goslin and patrick corbin tonight. Julio yuri us and max scherzer tomorrow clayton kershaw on a spigno on saturday. Trevor bauer and joe. Ross on sunday. Of course we'll see if bauer makes this start in light of the horrible allegations that came out yesterday regarding potential sexual assault off. You've read the athletic article. Certainly sounds like a mess of a situation for all involved. We'll see what happens. We'll see if major league baseball steps in prevents the dodgers from using bauer. I don't know what's going to happen with that. But you know. I hate talking about these things in the context of betting because there there's so much bigger than that of course we'll see if power is able to make that july fourth start otherwise the dodgers get a lefty tonight and corbin. The dodgers struggle with lefties as we all know righties the rest of the way though after tonight the nationals have been hitting a little bit but man that your es insures are matchup. Looks really really good. There on friday kershaw a on saturday. The dodgers will be a big road favorite in that one so not sure. We'll have a ton of betting opportunities in this series but we'll see how the nationals do stack up as that. Offense has been playing quite well. The astros and the indians here from rebel dez and giancarlos mahia lance mccullers. And sam henches jayco torrisi. Eli morgan and then zach cranky and to be determined on sunday for the indians. Indians have the bullpen advantage in this series. But that's it and also the indians a big regression candidate as we know if you look at any of their alternate standings metrics. You can see that. They are one of the biggest overachievers in all of baseball. This season and their recent schedule has been really friendly. Their most recent opponents have been the tigers twins cubs for just two games. Pirates orioles mariners cardinals orioles. They play houston this weekend. They played tampa bay starting next week. The indians have a very difficult schedule up to the all star break and really throughout the month of july. So that's why. I talked about what you know. It's a good time to take a piece of the white sox for a series for division future. Maybe a pennant future. Something like that because don't probably have a much bigger lead for the division by the time the all star break rolls around now that the indians are playing a much more difficult schedule in the month of july. So i don't know if we'll get chances to fade cleveland against these good teams but maybe we do get some here this weekend against the astros although valdez already a massive favorite for the game coming up here tonight the raise in the jay's no not ray j not a sex tape here the tampa bay rays and the toronto blue jays to be determined and alec minoa on friday chain mcclanahan ross stripling saturday ryan yarborough and robbie ray on sunday as i just talked about the rays hit for a lot more power on the road than they do at home. Toronto obviously having a big offensive showcase with regularity now really interesting series to say the least here blue jays do get a couple of lefties mcclanahan and yarborough will see what the raise due on friday with their pitching setup but ross stripling turned it around robbie raise pitching really well could end being a decent series for the jays. But i'm not sure if they'll be a lot of betting value in this series the red sox and the as you know we've seen boston struggle a lot out on the west coast and in particular in oakland. I think back to a few years ago. Oakland swept boston at home..

"Like baseball and and this guy makes like for almost documentary. Basically style videos about baseball. He talked about this this filipino. Little league team that got banned The baseball cheating scandal like he has a really in-depth video as to the whole like sticky foreign substance thing. That's that's gone by the way somebody had their glove and hat confiscated already. Yeah the guy from the mariners. Yeah exactly that that was fun. The he's done a great video about josh donaldson and why he so angry. I didn't about jose fernandez. Which i guess kind of tells you what she kinda need. You know. just need to know about the end of his life. Which wasn't great wasn't great. It all this is video about. Zag will make you zach cranky fan. If you're not as fan right now we hey no nobody should hate cranky. But some people used to but watches videos at grank. I highly recommend this channel. He's got a video about why everybody hates raw. That's a half hour long by the way that was a half hour long he's got of garrett cole video and how he's cheating you know what makes chapman so scary but he's got that video up there as well gotta jose canseco video. That's always fun fun to watch. He's got the whole video wide. Ted ted williams had frozen somewhere in a lab. I think in florida so so it just great videos. Great videos i i. I've been really really enjoying it. He's his early stuff is a little rough but you can just see how much improved since. Then he's got one hundred seventy one thousand subscribers that used to be a lot smaller. And i think some some of the other baseball youtubers are starting to notice his stuff so he's already verified now on youtube. Meaning if you ever watch a mlb game on youtube. He's one of the few people that can actually comment on the game. So man i kind of wish they would open the data up to the public. I wanna see how how crazy to comments would be. Comments are already terrible enough as it is. I just want to see the free for all when there's a baseball game going on Anyways yeah baseball exist promo code. Yes it does there. And i'll think of a second one while. Ucr as well. I i was thinking about using some media content. But i think ship. That's next week. I'm going to go into something. "To quantify exactly how bad my day was and put it in context. And i had to answer questions about it like i would also be saying tomorrow's another day like every single time. Yeah yeah yeah. Yeah that's true. we're we're protected. Hopefully for traffic quotas and the lakers. At least i've been lucky in that respect but yeah and i think also people misunderstand like how a press conference can be for some people a more anxiety inducing setting than lake. You know center court in the finals of grand slam which is like hard to put yourself in that place. I guess because one sounds more terrifying to me than the other two. And i think when you think of athletes as like public figures in everything they do is on display in. Everyone is watching them all the time. And so you figure will what's the hardship of asking a question but it can be. It can be more of a hardship for many people so being famous and successful and wealthy doesn't make you immune to these difficulties and that's something that a lot of athletes are increasingly opening up about including many baseball players. I think that's something that you have to understand too like remembering zach cranky and when he dealt with social anxiety and baseball and maybe still does like he would talk about how like the mound was his happy place sort of and when he was pitching he was okay and then it was the other times and all the interactions that were required of him. That were the most challenging and why he had to step away from baseball and that's probably why he still doesn't do a ton of interviews and like when he always says something joepags. Nancy just wrote about this this week but when grandma says like well he wouldn't wanna win cy young because it would be a hassle or he wouldn't want to throw a no hitter because it be a hassle or something and everyone says that's great keeping cranky and his quirky and he doesn't care about the things that most people care about and that is endearing in way and yet also maybe it's because like the hassle you know it is a real thing it's a real impediment like doing a lot of interviews about those things would actually be worth it to him so there's probably a a deeper underlying issue there. Yeah it's tough. A i do not envy them for for that aspect of their jobs. And i think that's hopefully this whole thing to mirror reflection for more sensitivity in care with the way that reporters treat that access because i think it is important to have a press corps that has the opportunity to tell stories that that access but also. It's a huge responsibility to be carrying sensitive appropriate with it and we should say i. I know that friend of the show. See trent rosecrans president of the b. w. a. and others there are working really hard on restoring access and they sent out an update this week. Which sounds like. There's some progress there at least with media members in baseball getting back on the field before the game and not having to social distance if they're vaccinated and hopefully that will be a prelude to clubhouses opening up again at some point and that's all collectively bargained and it's not entirely in media members control. But i know that people are are working. Really hard on advocating for those things and sounds like monday is when media members will be allowed onto the field. Trent said that he and others have heard from some players that they would actually welcome people back into the clubhouse like i think that's a big concern. Is that like yet. Baseball does sort of have this special access. That's a privilege compared to other sports. And yet if you take it away for a year and a or two years or whatever just because of the circumstances then will there actually be inertia that just prevents it from snapping back into place. And that's happened in in other. Sports can sometimes be an excuse to restrict access. That people might have wanted to do anyway. Just putting myself in baseball players place like. I don't know if i were a baseball player. Would i mind that. The place where i sit at my locker before the game and get changed and walked to and from the shower and everything is not like populated with strangers with recorders operator. Probably not personally. Even though i think i would probably enjoy entering some questions at least but i know. Trent said that you know he's heard that some baseball players are in favor of opening the doors again. And letting people back in. And i guess they might say something different to a reporter. Who's asking them at than to their teammates or or their friends but still it's nice to hear that at least some players see some value in it and you know some of them benefit both in terms of exposure or if they're interested in future media careers of their own. That is something that. I think you make those connections with media members and that's how you end up on a panel or a you're a talking head on ob network someday or whatever so there can be some benefits. It's not just entirely a a one way. Parasitic sort of relationship. So i guess we have done our our media criticism conversation. Everyone was waiting for the way in on this topic is it had been so undercover. This week you know. Reporters like to talk about reporting. I suppose so. Hopefully people will forgive for that sparing everyone. The split infinitive conversation could be a lot worse whether you can say very unique or not. it's it anyway. One more thing. I meant to mention about the access issues. Joe girardi kind of ruffled some feathers recently. Where he Admitted to hiding bryce harper's injury and and pretending that he might be available when he wasn't and then he also declined to explain his rationale for a strategic decision. And he said he's just he's not going to explain those things anymore. It's like an organizational stance that the phillies are just gonna say it was a manager's decision and he's not gonna share anything on who's available or who's nodar why he did certain things necessarily because he feels like it's a competitive advantage to the phillies for their opponents. Not to know what they're doing or why they're doing those things and says not totally new for gerardi. I remember him doing something like this in new york where you would maybe sort of obscure injuries. Or he would explain why he made a mid plate appearance pitching change by saying strategy which i enjoyed of course but he said he was going to be open and honest about everything when the phillies hired him. So this was seen as a reversal of sorts. And it's may be related to what we were saying. Because if you're just doing everything remotely via zoom like it's probably easier to hide someone who's nursing an injury and if you're not seeing them getting treatments on that in the clubhouse or they don't have to lie to your face when you're in the same room with them then that kind of thing is may be easier to get away with but i wonder where you stand uncertain of teams lying or omitting information to try to preserve some purported competitive.

"They must do this so i. I'm not really sure why. Everyone's blaming the french open. I think they all tried to do what they thought was best for the sport. So the picture i was thinking of zach cranky came up with that myself and he had he had social anxiety for a long time and i'm sure still does my question for naomi osaka. You do go out on social media and you are a political activist. You went out there and every day last year at the us open. You are a mask with a different name of someone who had been murdered you. You have a lot of things that you want to say. It seems to me fair for someone to ask you questions about this i mean. I don't think that's unreasonable at this point. And if these questions questions in general make you uneasy. Okay i get that. But there's gonna be a way to maybe not have mass press conferences but to have a couple of designated people ask you. What are reasonable questions. You have something to say this this at the moment and i think most athletes most athletes while they have sympathy for someone's plight they also say. Hey you know part of the bargain one of the ways. We make fifty five million dollars last year. Is that we talk to people right just too old to going back to the bargain that she is made with sort of the celebrity and the culture surrounding sports and the accessibility. That bargain did change with the us open and you wonder how that has affected her moving forward and what i find so helpful is actually reading her instagram post about the withdrawing from the tournament and and sort of polishing to the reporters and recognizing that the conversation should have happened. Maybe before the statement of i will not do xyz because to the point there is a way to have these two. Have the access and ask those. Because i think she wants to give you those answers she just wants to be able to. Maybe have the the time to consider her answers. Fully admit the outdated the outdated model that they're using is not necessarily the best way for that. So i feel terribly for where she's been this week and i actually look at the saying you lose this tournament but then what are you going to gain in terms of. You know a better system for for players and even for media. How are you going to be able to get those richer conversations because now you're not just asking. Can you take us through why you decided to go to the net and the third said and in you're talking about much more important issues but i would tell you and then i'll get out of this. I made a living in those press conferences and ninety five percent of the time. It's why did you go to the net on that particular. Play that that's what it is and who you're gonna play next. And how do you feel about the next match. Ninety five percent of the time. Do so and i just wanted to turn into a negotiation to change the format of those things that they do after they they play because spn can always get an interview with top athletes right. The big guy always get yes they want. People can't that's all the little people have is that that's right but i look at it. I'm looking at it. Maybe a little pollyannaish. But they're this screw. It could end up being a good thing the fact that people paid attention when she was wearing a mask. Cipriani taylor on it and platform for that. Now we're going to have conversations about athletes and mental health that we ordinarily and the fact that this happened at a at you know at one of the majors Draws makes it even more important to have this conversation it makes people are taking much more seriously than they would have if this had been some since golf tournament hills or something like that And that in the long run could end up being a good thing for all the athletes. I mean by the way on on the. There's a lot of. There's a lot of people out there who were extraordinarily sympathetic. With the way your life is conducted when you are an athlete of great consequence you can also particularly in an individual sport not not export that an individual sport. You can take some time off. It's okay to take some time off that this isn't you know i i don't i. Don't enjoy guests. The conclusion that she's being forced to take time off because the media has hounded her. I don't think that's reasonable. I think this is a combination of a lot of things. Including what is internal with her and maybe taking some time off is a good thing or am. I wrong on this. Yeah no. I think you're absolutely right. Let me tell you about ash body. I mean we talked about that with talk yesterday. I mean this is somebody's number one player in the world and has taken time off to be with family and keep her self centered. So maybe you see more of yeah. Yeah well i will. I'll give you another name in a team. Sport circumstance the very mysterious in elliptical kyrie. Irving now sure has taken off. Twenty games unisom personal days. You know. I don't know. I mean if they win the title. Nobody will care. But this the first time. I've ever heard of that with athletes and they are. They have greater skills than we do. They look different than we are. They make more money than we do but inside inside they're pretty much the same bright so absolutely and and again having this happened at a slow in the vet and hurt being beehives paid one of the athletes in the world of draw attention to to that in a way that the problem. I want to repeat what else to the nba. mr tony. The washington wizards stave off. Elimination beating the seventy sixers helped a great part with joel embiid. Who left the game early in the first quarter did not return. I mean he's going to have an. Mri is status for the next game is in doubt at this point. Also in another bizarre moment with fan interaction with players fan runs onto the court jumps up and slaps the backboard and immediately tackled by security guards. There when he's escorted off You can see him sorting. Give a joe namath. Hey you know we're number one or he's number one as he walks off but just another incident of fans sort of getting unruly at sporting events is. We're let out of the lockdown here in sporting events. I'm pretty old fans have been doing this for one hundred years. It's not new. it's it's absolutely not new. It's getting a lot more attention now. It's very dangerous. It's always been dangerous. It just didn't get the sort of attention that that's getting now that guy's a dope and he should never be back.

"Northern colorado is opening day colorado rockies getting set to go up up against just the dodgers so way to start it. And i've already told you guys my game of the week this week is this game. It's opening day so for for one at least once this year. I'm gonna say the rockies is my game of the week drew crossman joining us from dnv are rockies through always fantastic to have mr crease on the show all right man. You got a lot of nervous energy out there. There's a lot of fans out there that you know are still upset still very upset saying they're not gonna watch they're not gonna listen. Whatever we we're looking for some nuggets here drew. We're looking for some positives. Anything that you can give us that would lead rockies fans to believe. This season isn't going to be a dumpster. Fire pretty negative. Start there. but we're gonna get. Let let me do this with the caveat. I'll say one thing up front. I predicted the colorado rockies win seventy baseball games this year okay and i've only predicted them to win. More games than they ended up winning twice Just to throw that out there but if you are looking for silver linings is actually like pretty much every player on this roster has something interesting to look at something to root for raimondo. Poppy as your new leadoff guy can. He continue to hit over three hundred as you know. There's that matter if he doesn't hit for power. How does he continue to develop as a fielder. Obviously you know. Trevor story and charlie black men are amazing to watch every single day You're taking those guys josh days. How about him getting the day. Second base first time in years not knowing are an auto third who was just as his cousin. His undrafted overlooked never attack prospect cousin. Who's got absolutely everything to prove if any of these guys should have a hallmark movie made about him You know there's cj krona's a veteran who's been under looked his entire career. A ryan mcmahon. I think almost all of us believe he's got star power just waiting to burst out of there. And it's probably the best starting rotation that colorado rockies ever had so you know if they're going to surprise people this year they need to be incredibly healthy. They need to be a bit lucky. All of their young guys need to take a big step forward and none of those things are impossible. They're just unlikely to happen all together. But i do actually truly believe this is going to be a very fun team to watch. Because there's a lot of guys who are they gonna prove this year that they belong in the big which super cool and fun to watch guys prove that or did they don't which is going to be sad for them individually and frustrating for fans to watch a losing season but then at least will know and moving forward the rockies can have a more clean break into what should be their next era of baseball. We're talking to drew crease. Dvr rockies drew you mentioned it the health aspect and that's one key ingredient here if the rockies want to have any shot at all last week was kind of a rough week as we as we began approaching opening day. We heard the terrible news about over. We heard Tough news of the with with kyle freeland and that side of it. What what does the injury situation look like with with some of these guys and wind. Can we expect them to come back. Scott drew i never even. He's going to play baseball again. Yeah that was really really tough and we just have to wait for the real medical experts to get back to us on scott and he's hoping he can pitch again and maybe this year but that y- you don't wanna count too much on that or worry too much about that I think freeland and rodgers could be back within the month. Which is good news. Yeah yeah hey starting the season without those guys but it sounds like they can still have relatively full seasons and that's really what this year is going to be about those types of guys you you you find out how big a part of your future kyle. Freeland and brendan rodgers. And the worst news actually isn't losing baseball games. Sorry folks is more than likely going to happen but the the worst news be lost seasons from young players. You wanna see what you've gotten these guys. Especially a guy like brendan rodgers who we barely seen him so Another guy to be excited about once. He takes the field. Yeah no question about it. I mean i think drew if no one was on this roster right now because that's the elephant in the room right nolan earn auto and sad day. Everybody's feeling weird even the ones that are going to the games if he was on this roster right now what do you think the same roster save for known are nano is it's still. It's still kind of a rough team. I mean that's they were rough. Last year's two months it was weird season. But would you say about this. Baseball team does nolan. How much of a difference nolan make group. you know. I think it would make a pretty big difference see. Would kind of slide a lot of guys into the space. I've actually said this on our podcast a couple of times and it frustrates me to do. I'd actually talked about. Cj crown as a really good potential acquisition for the rockies for a couple of years power babic and protect nolan hitting like the these banning fourth. Today i believe so that. That's the kinda. He like austin gombar. Some of these other additions they made would have been perfect for our team with nolan. I understand they got on her back for nolan. But even something like the weird thing they just did like i think at midnight last night adding jolie shopping back Like okay. I guess that's happening but even like it would make much more sense on a team. That had nolan aren't auto on it because these are all very nice complimentary pieces cronin and these guys to club that would contend but these guys almost certainly won't be so yeah. I think he can make a huge difference. What do you make them automatic contenders especially with these injuries with over going down in particular that that bullpens going to be a gigantic question. Mark now and so I think it relies more on that. But he certainly would have helped no question about it Drew talk to about so josh. Quintez you talked about him for a moment. it is kind of surreal isn't it. It's kinda strange. I mean one of the most beloved. I'm not even gonna say rocky one of the most beloved colorado sports figures nolan earn auto. Goes away drama a lot of bad blood now. Rockies fans are still very very upset well his cousin get stick to go. That's a pretty bizarre story. If you think about it right. Like if john elway been replaced by like steve elway or something strange like never played for a top school or anything and you just kind was out there but yeah i mean it's it really is a great story and and as tempting as it is you know to to compare him to. His cousin are talked about that connection. Josh really is his own man and and he's a great great guy Really outgoing personality really Charming and charismatic phenomenal defender. Which is something. I think people are gonna realize it's going to be hard not to make comparisons because he's over there third days. He's really really really good with the glove so he can add with the bat and it turns out he's just figured out something and none of the scouts are evaluators of seen it And he can hit the way he did last year. And through all of spring training and part of the reason why he's in their body second today if it turns out he's a thing. This is an extraordinary fine for the rockies organization and i know no one wants to give them credit for anything right now and fair enough but at least give josh credit for the amount of hard work and determination takes her for all thirty teams in baseball. The pass on you thirty times each like three entire drive you. How many rounds are in the major league draft and so you know and and then the known pick up on him as a prospect. There is opening day third base for a major league baseball team. And who knows what the future holds for. Josh went as we didn't know on opening day. Two thousand sixteen with the future health. Trevor story he was the rockies tenth best prospect he struck out too much. He was a prop project on defense. You know and then he hits two home runs day one again zach cranky and we're just like a okay so they played a game. Play the game absolutely my man all right trevor story. You mentioned it. What is it looked like for. Trevor i mean i gotta admit drew. I'm going into the season like. Oh let's enjoy while we have him. I guess in my brain. I've almost have almost said my goodbyes. Even though i'm still we're still gonna watch trevor stories throughout the season. But how how long will he be rock..

Mets "Fully Intent" On Trading Syndergaard
"Rival evaluators say they believe the mets are fully intent on dealing Noah syndergaard before the trade deadline quote. It's beyond listening said one. They want to move him so keep that in mind okay so noah syndergaard expected to move from the mets then maybe half an hour ago any Martino who covers the mets in New York for S. N. Y.. Says add the dodgers to the teams who have expressed interest in Noah syndergaard per sources. They have the players to get it done if they want. Now what's weird about that is syndergaard is a starting pitcher. He's cost controlled as for the next two seasons. You really don't need them this year but where he makes sense is next yes so here's the deal they've got kershaw obviously locked up for three more years. buehler's pre arbitration can't Amita they've got locked up but review is on a seventeen point nine million dollar qualifying offer he might win the Cy Young Award and he is going to be worth a lot on the open market. Richhill is thirty nine in a free agent very possible. They don't bring him back so it does make sense <hes> that they would lock up or trade for a guy who is locked up for multiple years and Noah syndergaard. They're looking at him. He's not had a great year but they're are probably looking at him and saying he's got great stuff. He's got electric stuff. He still has his fastball. He can be fixed. I like it if it doesn't prevent the dodgers for going after you to retain them over money. If money prevents them from retaining continue engine review the way he's been pitching this year that would bother me. Here's a here's the problem and he's on a one year deal which means he's an unrestricted free agent. I get it. I know how much again but you're not gonNA give him four years. He's GonNa give I'm four years. Maybe more than that somebody gave somebody gave Zach Cranky six and drank. He wasn't even coming off the CY. Young reused GONNA be coming off the site yet the dodgers that's the point he's coming off a CY young season. You're GonNa let money get in the way of giving you thirty. I always do two years old like I'm not being. I'm not paying a long gee. I know I'm GonNa let term get in the way somebody's GonNa give him four years and if I'm Andrew Friedman I'm not giving them for years. This is what held up cranky cranky. They said they would go five not six fix the diamondbacks went six and they let him walk would be very uncharacteristic for Andrew Friedman to give our guy four years. I mean okay and do it by and again. He's already thirty three years old and had some serious shoulder issue. I get that but he also has been their best pitcher this year. We've all seen throughout history that when he's healthy he's as talented as anybody. They have in the roster. Go ahead Greg. It was Kinda like when the Yank- when the Yankees signed signed to rookie Kuroda away from the dodgers he was pitching really well and he pitched really well for the Yankees afterwards too but it just was to a long time he was older. It just wasn't yeah they're playing and the other part of it is this you gotta pay an Andrew Friedman. I know because the one time I had him on the radio show he talked about it like you pay for future performance past performance and you have to kind of evaluate that when a guy is going to be thirty three to start the season next it's just me more just the idea of I feel like if you're the dodgers considering who you are as a franchise what your market value is the television situation that prevents a lot of your fans from actually seeing this team.
