"Did you know the cova. Dads are about to surpass. The number in america from the nineteen. Eighteen flu pandemic. I did not know that. Yeah so we are just days away and it's clearly gonna pass the number because we're still having over a thousand today We're just days away from this being the worst pandemic in us history Created by humans. A human mistake almost certainly and not enough talk about that or is anything being done to make sure we don't do this again to our selves. I would like it if we made sure. We didn't never do this again here here. Here's a story that troubles me quite a bit Talked about it a little bit of the other day as are freaking worthless congress and a series of president's going further down the road of doing things they know were unconstitutional bit by bit by bit. It has predictably eroded approval of the supreme court. The supreme court was pretty steady for many many years with high approval ratings because they were seen as independent of politics in. You know all the obvious things. I think but as congress has failed to deal with things and put the supreme court in the role of having to decide these decisions that the so the congress should and then president's doing things to challenge the supreme court so then by you know automatically if trump does something that is that people are saying is unconstitutional will then if the court rules against it. People like trump get in their minds. Okay disprove against trump. Same with biden. Right i mean. Because i and it's become so fashionable in politics always has been on and off but especially now you say to your getting screwed. You're getting cheated the main sticking it to you and i'm going to stand up for you. I'm going to x. Y. and z. And i know as. I'm claiming that i can't do that. It's blatantly unconstitutional. But then you make the supreme court the bad guy for calling you on something you clearly can't do and then you wail at all. They're a bunch of conservative monsters on the supreme court. It's it's so dishonest. And even as the left complaints about the damage trump allegedly did to the institutions. I mean that's a that's us seriously dangerous game to play right well so with the supreme court having majority approval ratings for all of our lifetimes. It is now at thirty seven percent of americans approve. The supreme court is handling its job. Fifteen point drop from last year well and again and there are sins on the right. Of course the left spent the last couple years trying to convince us that. Very supreme court nominees were rapists would would get women back alley hanger abortions would force gays back into the closet where monsters were oppressors. Handmaid's tale blah blah blah and. The number of people believed in the media as the horrible reporting on the texas abortion law. Right the media acting like the supreme court stepped in to try to attack roe versus wade when this this texas abortion thing has zero to do with rovers weight based on me writings and talking's of all my favorite lawyer pundits It's you know. So that's where you end up. Yeah that's it's not good. It's not good. There are so many trillions of dollars at stake politicians on both sides are willing to just throw away anything to keep their share of keep their share of the power. I well That you know that annoys me. That bothers me. It pisses me off. But the fact that so many american people have been hoodwinked into thinking. The gigantic rich government is actually looking out for the little guy just so naive. The new guinness world records book is out. Here's some highlights dogwood the longest ears the world's short door short female twins so that strikes your fancy. How long are years. Is it a basset hound af my My sister has a basset hound. She's on she's not owned up. Sorry she is guardian several in her lifetime. She's a fan of the breed. Gotcha they have exceedingly long ears. They drag on the ground. You have to make sure they do not become like damaged an infected if some dog breeds her odd. But she's a big fan. So i will say nothing for one of the most iconic brands and all of television is coming back bad boys bad boys what to do what you gonna do when they come for you. Yes drug addicts. Being put in the back of police cars drunk people being handcuffed by the beliefs. It is cops the obviously guilty making stupid and weak excuses for why. They're where they are doing what they're doing yes fox will debut. Four episodes of the show's thirty third season starting october first with additional episodes to repair on friday nights. Didn't they like suspend that during the whole craze of the police are evil in black lives matter and the rest of. That's exactly what happened. After george floyd was killed. They pulled the cops show during the whole police are bad craze and announced back. What an odd society we are. I'd say then finally this update breaking roomba news. i had the original roomba. I found it damn near worthless. I have a much more recent one and it's pretty good. Maybe it was. Because i had kids. Maybe if you don't have kids it'd be easier. But i mean there was just so much stuff you had to pick up for the duke for. Its do its job just might as well just vacuum might as well get out the vacuum and vacuum that's the robot vacuum anyway the roomba seven the room. J. seven plus is actually what it's called the latest version of the robot vacuum. It's a vacuum and a cell phone. Now has a camera now as a camera. that can identify pet droppings. If you just like had it set to do like if you if you set the timer so it's supposed to rumble your home at eleven o'clock in the morning while you're at work so it's not vacuuming while you're home trying to watch. "They're not going to protect me. I want to know who are they trying to protect. What's even more upsetting to me. Is that we now. We know that these f. b. i. Agents have committed an obvious crime. They my statement and that is illegal in itself yet no recourse has been taken against them. The department of justice refused to prosecute these individuals. Why started with. Tears turned into anger with several of the a best known gymnasts in the history of the sport in america testifying yesterday about how they were failed by. Us gymnastics and even more awful by the fbi who was alerted to this program a year and four months before they started looking into it right systematic child sexual abuse child rape. The girls came forward. They reported it. Usa gymnastics the us olympic committee and the fbi all swept under the carpet in in ways. That are almost incomprehensible to anybody with living soul. Yeah we're asking the question earlier not actually no no. He think who's who's who's a worse human being nassar. The doctor who is raping kids. Obviously he's a horrible human being. I would like him executed. I could do it myself. But i believe people like him. Are you know twisted monsters. Our brains don't work just you know those people have always existed always will exist. You just got a call from the heard. What about people whose brains do work. And they're just bureaucrats that it's either too inconvenient forum or there's too much paperwork or or they're on a gravy train that they don't wanna do derail or they're making a good living so they don't want to be. Who's the worst human being here. I almost think that latter group is tomorrow. Unconscionable they're not compelled by a of defaulted the faulty brain right there just being incredibly selfish well. As the good book reminds us. There are different kinds of evil and they are Those different people are guilty of different sorts. But yeah the the idea that you would know specifically unequivocally from multiple young women that they were being sexually abused and you would keep silent is It's horrific You wanna hear some more from sure. Gals Simone biles here and clip sixty to be clear. Take time to be clear. I blame larry. Nassar also blame an entire system that enabled perpetrated his abuse. Usa gymnastics in the united states olympic and paralympic committee committee knew that i was abused by their official team doctor long before i was ever made aware of their knowledge so we the first we played coming back from the break was michaela maroney. Michael play sixty one and sixty two back to back. Because i want this to be clear to folks. If they're not going to protect me. I want to know. Who are they trying to protect. What's even more upsetting to me. Is that we now. We know that these fbi agents have committed an obvious crime. They falsified my statement and that is illegal in itself yet no recourse has been taken against them. The department of justice refused to prosecute these individuals. Why this was very clear cookie cutter pedophilia and abuse. And this is important. Because i told the fbi all of this. And they chose to falsify my report into not only minimized my abuse but silence me yet again. We heard some of the stuff back in july. When the justice department inspector general released their shocking report and found that the Allegations against nassar were first reported to the fbi in july of two thousand fifteen indianapolis the agency for some reason didn't investigate until september of two thousand sixteen in that period of time that the f. b. i. Sat on this story. Nassar abused they believe at least seventy more different young people. Oh my seventy women whose lives will never be the same or their family members or you know their husbands or kids. Ernie that's stuff will all be affected by this. The damage will ripple outward sure god-knows-how-long senators were told this yesterday and Republicans and democrats alike were horrified about what happened here. senate judiciary chairman. Dick durbin jared the committee the f. b. is handling of the nassar case is a stain on the bureau. Senator rich and richard blumenthal also a democrat said. The fbi investigation is a systemic a systematic failure. The fbi director himself. Christopher wray got up there and said all kinds of words about how horrified he isn't it can't believe it happened. And he's taken all the recommendations of the i g he's going to put them into effect and The official in the fbi. That was involved at the time is no longer with the agency. Okay well that's all true. I suppose It's unhandy that every time there's a scandal in government. You've got a new person in charge. Who can say well. That was the last guy. And you know i'm here now. Things are going to be different now. And don't worry we've transferred the fellow. Who committed monstrous crimes against the laws of man and god. He's don't worry he's not working there. Anybody going to jail bunches of people go into jail or anybody even going to be any trouble. Is there anybody. That's even going to lose their pension. No as far as i can tell no one guy retired. I'm guessing with his pension might have been close to retirement age anyway for all. I know it's that's it and my my bet would be. that's it. That's the full fallout from this story for the fbi. You blame a building. You say their real failings at the fbi and we are going to sort that out. So it doesn't happen in the future which christopher wray needs to say and i pray he's sincere and i hope he follows through but in terms of justice. How can you for instance in the case of michaela. Maroney refused to meet with her. She's calling the fbi. Saying i'm getting sexually abused over and over again. And they refused to take they finally take your statement than sit on it for seventeen months even though they have multiple girls making the same allegation and then finally when they're asked. Hey hey this guy's rape and all these girls you took a statement. Let's see it. They fake it up. They distorted they. Change it. and nobody's prosecuted. Nobody's going to get any trouble for that. That is well. That's the state of our institutions. Right now well. There's clearly two systems of justice for those of us who are not in the government and those who are which is precisely with this country was formed to not do Let's hear from ali reisman sixty three. It is crazy for me to try to wrap my head around. All we are asking for. Is that when a child goes into gymnastics or goes to school or does anything that they can be spared abuse in the fact that we've been treated like adversaries by so many organizations and our abuse has been diminished. we've been victim shamed online over and over again. We've been gaslight we've been made to feel that we don't matter. I never want another child to feel that way again. That was sixty four. Can we hear sixty three special agent in charge of investigating. Nassar met steve penny for beers.

'The West Wing' enlists big names for its When We All Vote reunion special
"Thanks. I'm a big fan of Aaron Sorkin and tell us why This is a good time for me in television, because I like him so much. He absolutely if you didn't watch it yesterday, a cz, always with streaming. You can watch it at your leisure. But yesterday they dropped on HBO, Max. Ah, Special reunion of the West Wing cast is probably his most legendary TV show The West Wing and gathered almost everybody from the cast for Martin Sheen and Allison Janney and Rob Lowe and so forth. To recreate an episode from one of the early seasons as a theatrical staged event in an empty theater, But they filmed it like it was a play and it was in that shifted from scene to scene and it was really cleverly done, but also just reminded you how Wonderful that Siri's wass and how inspirational it was, even though it was about politics. So if the dueling if the dueling town halls and so you may be this would've last night, but it's still out there, but even more so today, Netflix drops another Aaron Sorkin project. Which he wrote and directed. It's called the Trial of the Chicago Seven, and it goes back to the sixties, when those counterculture figures Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin and Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale and others were put on trial for inciting the riots that disrupted the 1968 Democratic convention. It was a big media circus, and this film looks like it's got it all and including a terrific cast, including two Emmy winners from this season. Jeremy strong from succession and one of the stars of watchman job doing the team. They're playing two of the defendants. You also have frankly, Angela's The judge and Michael Keaton's in there. Sasha Baron Cohen's in there. Doing dramatic bit, and it just sounds like again. Aaron Sorkin is knows his way around a courtroom. If you remember his very first big hit was a few good men. So if you like Aaron Sorkin style you've got two choices was like a double whammy of Aaron Sorkin this week. Now? Yeah, I once interviewed Jerry Rubin, a za journalism student at Penn State, and he was in the Rolfing, which is when you beat yourself up physical. Just one strange cat, man. I got to say yes. I have a feeling that would be a fun one to watch. Yeah. Will be S O on Sunday. You got something? The
Bengals rookie, Tee Higgins, getting more comfortable in offense
"Lance McAllister. He is Dave Lapham. It's welcome in a special guest. He's the Bengals rookie wide receiver for catches on Sunday. 16 catches on the season. We welcome in tea, Higgins t. How are you? I'm good. You're doing good. He had a 26 yard or yesterday. That was the longest play from scrimmage for the Bengals against that Baltimore Ravens defense If you played against a defense on any level that was more aggressive than what the Ravens took us a posturing yesterday in that football game. Um, I mean, I've been in the league knows. You know me plan against other sue in the national championship there, David, Mrs. Really aggressive. So that's the first time I've seen that since that game. See, I mentioned 16 catches. Now It's 16 times you've hooked up with Joe talk to us about the the comfort level in the chemistry you feel it's developing between you and Joe, Ah, utility and better and better each week. No, you listen to me more and more now, so just go out there and practice catching those, You know balls that he's given me, you know. With this behind me, or in front of me. He knows over the shoulder, so they're out there making those plays. Giving him confidence in me is, you know good so It seems like on a week by week basis you're learning and the one thing you talked about early, and teammates had mentioned it to you don't flash. Don't show your hands earlier. These defensive backs the guys at this level, You know, just kind of feed off of that. That type of thing. What other things have you learned little nuances that you've already applied in the early stages of your NFL career? Yeah. I can't do too much dancing at the London coach when you were going to get Stevie, you know, you gotta get point from point A to point B. And you know a lot of guys. Honestly, they're they're really good for defeat, and they're going to read you. So you just You can't can't do too much Daphne Blonde scrimmage. 85 games into your NFL career, Is it what? You thought it was the game? What you thought it be from a speed and everything you have heard? How was it played out for you? Yeah, that will be a new is gonna be a lot faster, if not more physical, You know that. It has been exactly that. Nah, just really well, and you know, really Now so plated Ellis you like you said, Death Valley. I've been to Death Valley Broadcasting games for that environment. There's nothing like in a night game of Death Valley. You haven't lived until you've experienced something like that. And then in the SEC, all the visiting stadiums that you go to, of all the crowd noise mirroring what's it been like? Plant in the National Football League with covert, You know 19 in the year 2020. That's been so different for everybody. What's that been like a Zen experience. Yeah. You know, having a no fan and stuff like that been really, You know really strange And we're you know, you know, I've been playing football on my whole life. Always have fans, and so is it really just feels like a scream? It's you got. Ah, Brain Accutane. Gotta bring no energy, So I mean, that's what we try to do. You make a play to bring all energy I'm getting so tight, you know, came allowing the crowd when there's no fans in the stadium, so That's really how we go about it. T fans get to see you play on the field, but I don't think they have an appreciation for everything that goes with it in terms of following the protocols in the testing, and that's got away. I would think that's gonna be on your mind. And yet you have toe push it aside to play football. What's it like dealing with everything else beyond just playing the game right now? Yeah. You know, you got to get tested everything the day at a certain time. And, you know, get our math everywhere. So I mean, It's been really, you know, really weird, But everyone's going to just too and you know, just following protocol just so we could go out there and play the game that we both. Yeah, it's an interesting year instead of going on the road and facing these hostile crowds. Your face in a hostile enemy and covert 19, you know, and it's like you never know when it's going to crop up like it did in Tennessee, in Miami and other places, And I guess this This is the year where you have to go from a mental standpoint, be mentally strong and be ready to pivot on a just, I mean the team that pivots and adjust the best, you know, be at the Patriots with what they're going through the Titans and other teams. And teams that really don't get affected by covert. But after almost, you know, work to make sure you don't every single day of the season, the team that handles that type of business best this year. The teams are going to be okay. Right. Just like you know, you just gotta be careful with the alpha people, not people, not always. In the building every single day, you know, just really quarantine yourself for what? You know a few more weeks. The season go through and you know everybody be alright, so To your body's taken hits now for five weeks. How Just how In general, do you feel physically at this stage of the season? I feel really good, You know, just getting treatment. And, you know, getting massages every week, you know, just got to take care of your body. You know, you don't take care of your body. You won't be able to play under sentence on Sunday. So You were exposed to. Ah, tremendous leaders, coaches players at Clemson. I think you thought that Joe borrow fit that category. A za an outstanding leader as he lived up to everything that you thought. My understanding is after the game, he instead to the to the defense. You continue to play like that. We won't lose another game this year. I mean, that's that's what you're looking for. From your guy at quarterback in it. Oh, yeah. 100% You know you want to go out like that is going to take Take ownership of you know how we play it off. As you know, we gotta compliment our defense when they go out there and get stuff. You know, we gotta go out There is four points where they'd be a field, road or touch now. And him. Coming up in, you know, speaking on it in a zoo, the game is really big, and that's what you're going to. God has run the offense see one. Ah, when all hick has been breaking, lose either good or bad. What has he been? What's job in like in the huddle? What kind of influence in leader has he been? From that standpoint? Got encouraging. You know he's gonna pick it up for my job. Go get a false start. You know he's going to talk to you encouraging you have that play behind, you know, And you know, we have a good place He's gonna you know. Giggle and laugh about it. Sometimes in the dependable know what the situation is. You know the guy that is the guy that you really want, you know, in the huddle. See how much carry over from Clemson in in your routes. The actual routes themselves are there to the to this offense here with the Bangles and National Football League? I know them different terminology, all those kind of things, but there are only certain number routes in a row tree, right? I mean, is it just me or is it just applying? You know things that you already know that you've done a million times? Make sure mentally you know, with the with the language and everything involved. You're on the same page as the quarterback. Yeah. Yeah, it comes and he basically ran everything. So I mean, you know you just from Beit was just you know, the different, you know, Route names and what? What The plate concept is So that was the biggest thing for me. But other than that, you know all the routes of the same You have two NFL touchdown catches. Do you have either football? Go out first. Defunding the police
"Abbott announced plans to freeze property taxes in cities that vote to defund there. Police departments. This comes after Austin officials voted last week to cut the city's police budget by by a a third third and and shipped shipped those those funds funds to to Social Social Services Services haven't haven't argued argued that that defending defending police police forces forces in in danger danger citizens citizens from from city city should should not not then then be able to raise taxes on well, This is not a difficult math problem to figure out if you do fun. Police departments get guess what police officers do. I believe this is a growing trend in in America today. The mayor of Los Angeles have proposed cutting the police budget there by $150 million in Colorado. There's a bill that would allow police officers to be sued. Sergeant Rob Pride is with the Fraternal Order of police, and he's a patrol sergeant in Colorado. Here's what he told ABC Action News in Tampa. There's officers in my department better Talking about wanting to get out of law enforcement early. That's just in his department. We just did a story about how San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department is looking for someone 100 officers, right, right, And that's a big No, no, that's that's a lot of that's a lot of need. Okay, that's that's just there. OK in in our neck of the woods. Then you talk about Colorado and you go across the country in fact, There's an outfit out there called the Police Executive Research Forum. They have reported that 63% of departments nationwide saw a decrease in applicants in the last five years. Okay, so this is a trend that goes back pre pandemic. In the last five years, people applying to be officers has been dropping significantly. Sergeant Pride says The recent efforts to defund police Department's that's only made matters worse will be relegated to B, a reactive police forces with no additional programs and no additional interaction other than To enforce the law in a rest. You know that's not a profession. I want to be a part of So Aubrey Aquino made some phone calls for us on this yesterday and talked to the folks at the Sacramento Police Department. And they say they have not seen a drop off that it's remained consistent both in applications and a number of officers retiring over the years. The requirements to be a police officer have gotten more stringent. I mean, more officers are required, especially if they're going to be moving up the ranks, toe have college degrees or additional training. So that was happening pre pandemic right And then after the pandemic and the riots and moved to defund, a lot of them are just saying, You know what? I'm I'm a year away from retirement. I've got a lot of time on the books for sick time and leave amount, and then you're in Colorado and they say, Way to say I could get sued. Wait, wait a minute here. I don't know if I want. I want it, Za tren. It's a disturbing trend just because communities need law enforcement at some point Let's
Sources: Big Ten expected to cancel football season; no games for Michigan, Michigan State in 2020
"It is not official yet. But we know the big 10 presidents met, and the reporting from a number of different sources now is that 12 out of the 14 said we want to and need to Reluctantly pull the plug on the Big 10 college football season, at least for the moment and move it to spring. Want to get to the down and dirty about what's driving that decision with Steve Courtney? Who, of course, leads our team when it comes to Michigan State University football Hasty What's going on there, guy? How's everything, my friend? Well, I am sorry, because I know this is this would be a deep disappointment, and I have no doubt that it will become official sometime later today or tomorrow. What's AH, in your mind what's driving the decision? Why are they so doubtful that they can move Can't move forward with some quarantining? Well, first of all, guys, I participated in a zoom meeting with the new Michigan state head football coach Mel Tucker. Last Friday, and at that particular time coach Tucker was cautiously optimistic that the protocols that were set up would be successful and again. I say cautiously optimistic because he realised, of course, a za nation were at the mercy of this dreaded virus. Well, as you pointed out at the outset of our conversation, Big 10 presidents voted 12 to yesterday to end the fall sports in the conference and look guy. Here's the thing. I'm sure like me. You have been asked by a gazillion times going back to march. Is there gonna be college football? Is there going to be college football? Is there going to be NFL football? If I had a dime for every time I've been asked? I'd be a very wealthy man. The fact of the matter is our nightmare has begun because it's not going to be a shock to a lot of people guy. There's not gonna be college football this year, and the question is, why would there be
Chicago Weather: Isolated Storm Chances
"At O'Hare Today 88 midway 87 at the Lakefront, and tonight it's 81. We've got a wind blowing from the South Southwest and as it has been all day long, and that's pushed that warm air right up to the lake. Friday's blowing at nine miles per hour tonight we have moderate levels of humidity. 80% of our possible son today. How do you be bad? It's been a very sunny July and the term of above normal temperatures has been extended 2 34 days with today's Warm temperatures. We've had 31 days this year and her above 88 degrees, making it the fifth most, uh, 88 degree plus days here in Chicago since 1960 there the other years, the most we had was eight years ago back in 2012. Well that humidity that we were just showing you might go into producing an isolated thunderstorm or to we think the best chance of that will be a za. Wind shifting cool front comes into the area. Tomorrow afternoon and early evening might be one tonight. Not a very high probability of that, and the cloud cover tomorrow will start mammalian the morning, Only 10% of the sky goes to 43 52% known and 6 p.m. And then these temperatures occur. This is a below normal weather regime for the most part, set for Saturday, but those air great temperatures with very comfortable levels of humidity. As Canadian here comes into the area, and that's a nice way to go at this time of the year. Course we wrapped July up after Friday and going to the New month of August this weekend. 15% chances of any rain tonight. 25 or 30% chance tomorrow afternoon. Not everybody's going to see it. And there you can see the result of the cool front passing temperature's just a tad above normal, most just a tad below normal Thursday Friday And Saturday, And there's the below normal daytime average temperature right through Wednesday next week, and then it begins to get hot again. So if you're hot weather lover don't give up on the heat. It's way early for that. It'll be nice to have a little break with these moderate dew points right there.
US arrests three Chinese nationals for visa fraud
"Lie about their status as members of China's military KP case. Brody Fernandez reports well, Katie, Three of those individuals have been arrested by the FBI, the fourth, however, a researcher from UC Davis Dwan Tang, who allegedly lied on a student visa form. When asked if she was a member of the Chinese military, well, she successfully fled to the Chinese consulate in San Francisco, where she's currently being granted protection by the Communist Party. Now the question is, Where do we go from here? Can't be Kay's legal analyst, Bill Portanova told me the situation. It's not anything new. The Communist government of China uses education visas and uses contractual agreements with businesses to being access to inside information technology research and so forth. And they use it to their own advantage in their own country, Of course, where they do not have any laws allowing for the protection of intellectual property or anything like that. So that means any technology or any research. The government of China gets their hands on Will they use it, and there's no way to sue them or even recover that research. In a statement said to Cabe a cave this afternoon, UC Davis officials did confirm Tang was conducting research in the Department of Radiation Oncology. I also found out TheStreet EAS were funded by the Chinese Scholarship Council, a study based exchange program affiliated with China's Ministry of Education. But are these four individuals who were charged possibly the only ones committing espionage? The Communist Party of China sends tens of thousands of people to the United States to infiltrate every level of society. How many of these people are students is a number that nobody knows. In California. There were 25,000 Chinese nationals attending the University of California throughout the state. This woman who has been charged is only one out of 25,000 but her being charged and these other people being charged, I think is the tip of an iceberg. Yeah, Kitty, that iceberg and represents the U. S China relations right now. And after this news breaking today, many think there will soon be a tipping point. And now with Tang under protection from the Chinese government in San Francisco, there's not really much hope for justice if she was, in fact committing espionage Well. If China was, in fact a country that played by international standards, there would be some sort of diplomatic discussion and resolution of the issue. Unfortunately, China cheat. And you can fully expect that China will deny she's there and then fully expect her to be smuggled out of the country. You know, Portanova says Unless the FBI was already heavily monitoring the Chinese consulate there is little hope Tang will be seen in a U. S courtroom anytime soon. As for U. C. Davis, they told me their school of medicine is providing all information requested by the FBI. And all other authorities who are continuing to investigate this case. All right, Kpk za Brody Fernandez there, Traffic and
Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell arrested in U.S.
"Close associate of the financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is under arrest today. Her name is Gillian Maxwell and just a quick warning that some parts of this story or really disturbing because of the nature of the alleged crimes. Prosecutors say Maxwell helped Epstein sexually exploit underaged girls have seen died in prison, and authorities ruled it a suicide. But the investigation into what he was doing his continued. NPR Justice correspondent Ryan Lucas has been following this story. In the meantime, he Ryan Good morning. How did Ah, Maxwell and Epstein know each other? Maxwell comes from a prominent family in the U. K. Her father was was a media magnet there. And she and abstain met in the 19 nineties. They dated for a period of time, but on a broader level, she became a close confident of hiss. They had a professional relationship as well. And there have long been allegations in lawsuits brought by Epstein's alleged victims that Maxwell for years helped abstain recruit young girls to be sexually exploited on even after Epstein suicide last year, prosecutors said that the investigation is, you noted, continued into his associates and possible co conspirators, and Maxwell was seen then a za likely person of interest for investigators. She's facing federal charges now what are the charges? She faces six counts in all, including conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in sexual acts and conspiracy to transport miners. To engage in criminal sexual activity. She also faces perjury charges for allegedly lying about her role in the scenes activities when she was asked about it under oath during a deposition a couple of years ago. What are prosecutors saying about what they allege? She did. Well. The events detailed in the indictment took place between 1994 1997 on they relate to three underage girls who were allegedly abused by Epstein. Here is how the Acting U. S attorney in Manhattan, Audrey Strauss summed up Maxwell's role. Mansell played a critical role in helping Epstein to identify the friend and groom minor victims for abuse. In some cases, Maxwell participated in the abuse herself. Prosecutors allege that Epstein and Maxwell had a sort of systematic method for luring these young girls in they would pretend to befriend them by taking them shopping by taking them to the movies by asking about their family or their school life. Maxwell would encourage the girls to let Epstein pay for their travel and their education, and prosecutors say that this was all part of a scheme designed to make these young girls feel indebted to abstain. And once Epstein Maxwell had developed a report with these with these underage girls, prosecutors say that Maxwell would try to normalize sexual abuse in a couple of ways by undressing in front of the victim. Or being present when Epstein was sexually abusing the victim on in at least one instance, as we heard, Strauss say, prosecutors allege that Maxwell participated in the abuse herself. Okay, so she's arrested now she's been charged. Does the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein stop here? This is not the end of the road. The top prosecutor in Manhattan Audrey Strauss, who I mentioned earlier said yesterday that this investigation is still ongoing. Of course, this case has generated a ton of public interest, in part because I've seen had ties to a lot of prominent people that includes Britain's Prince Andrew. On. There are questions about what Prince Andrew, for example and others. Other prominent people knew about absence activities. As for Maxwell, she has serious charges here. This sort of charges that could induce her to cooperate with prosecutors and share what she knows about other associates of abstinence.
The Great AI Fallacy
"Neil. I wanted to start today's episode. Talking about something that you have been thinking a lot about lately the great a fallacy. Can you tell me a little bit more about that? You give a talk on it recently. Right well yeah. I gave a longer talk but it sort of kicked off with this I on last Friday I was invited to give the distinguished lecture for information engineering here in Cambridge which was great but the start of the talk was what I call the great fallacy and it really comes about by China. Look across what people are saying about artificial intelligence and trying to workout what they're claiming is different over previous waves of automation. So my feeling. Is THAT THE COMMON ASPECT TO WIN? The general population talks about artificial intelligence. Is they seem to feel. I have never seen this explicitly put but I think it's always there implicitly that this will be the first wave of automation the adapt to US rather than US adapting to it. So what do I mean by that? Well in the past. We've automated physical Labor in factories Transport with trains and cause and each wave of automation as Heidi Flexible Intelligence. He's ourselves requires us to say. Oh okay so now have to train station at a particular time or I've got a ton up walk particular time with everyone else so that we can in some sense of the machines said the machines automate but they're so we offer flexible link that enables them to do their work. I think even you know computers people felt with computers will would that be an end to filing and tedious work. And of course it wasn't in fact we probably all do more tedious work than ever before because of computers. Because if the something. We can't easily automate on the computer we have to sit back copying and pasting things into spreadsheets. All going through editing fixing things said the Maltese work. In order to make things fit into the computer and I get the sense when I look at the underlying theme of what people seem to think about artificial intelligence that people have a sense that this isn't true anymore that because we've used the word intelligence. The end people think of intelligence being like us that the machine's going to accommodate has better. That just seems to me like an auto fallacy that there's no evidence of that tool what we're doing if anything more of the same way managing to find in this case instead of bits of physical work that we can repeat and automates as we did for machines with finding often bits of intellectual work that we can repeat and automate through machines so it feels very much like the truth is more of the same but the promise that everyone's making is no no. This is going to be different. Machines in amongst us just accommodating oss which the feels like no evidence full. That's fascinating so so we are sort of overstating. The flexibility of this new wave of automation. You think when we when referring to the kind of work that in the public conversation that people feel like artificial intelligence will do. And we're just kind of over blowing this thing that we've seen happen before. I think we're just we're not even stating it. I think that that's the issue so it's not so much where overstating it but we using terminology that implies implies to people something that won't happen so. I I give an example one of the big recent papers in Diagnostics with basically neural network continuously throughout his paper refers to the neural networks. They built as an AI system. Now I don't think that they're doing that to necessarily misrepresent but it does misrepresent because if you say I system it implies that the some sort of well the word intelligence means something to sort of people who are not even lay people but say doctors demane experts. That is a bit more than old. I've got functional EURONET. What model where I give it some inputs and it will give me an output. They don't think of that. So if you're using terms like that your encouraging them to believe that the system you built somehow significantly different from what's gone before and I don't see any evidence of that for me. It's computers in statistics and the fallibility of these systems is similar to fallibilities. We've had in the past or perhaps but perhaps it's hard to understand when those problems are occurring so in that zone of the area where there's a gap in understanding people filling it with bits and pieces that come from a notion of intelligence which is associated with our intelligence and just absolutely not present in these these artificial systems so. I don't think it's so much so people are overstating it but that conforming to a narrative and very natural narrative that occurs when you start using the term ai and people on Highlighting this challenge so people's expectations of what's going to be delivered. I think he's quite different. From what will actually happen which will lead to challenge to be seen in the past the same type of challenges. We've seen in the past where you have some automated system but in reality there's a large number of humans walking around that system to ensure it can walk and an existing example would be the extent to which say voice agents whoever's intelligent agent. Siri Electoral Google's are relying on Human Labor to label data for them. So there's an enormous amount of tedious work for humans producing this label. Dates ruin in a form which the computer can consume in all the computer can emulate that type of behavior. Now you might say well what's being done. That's the Nice thing is we don't have to do it again. Multiple Times. And that's true but all you've created machine that can repeat that toss it com. Do General Flexible intelligent things. It doesn't go hang on. Actually maybe I shouldn't be responding to the voice right now behind. The real thing you want me to do is say. Hang on a minute. You sound stressed. Allow me to tell you to sit down and have a cup of tea is not going to do that right so our own. The narratives that were using around these ideas are perhaps a setting ourselves up for disappointed expectations. So should we. Should we start? What language would you recommend? It depends on which sub field. You're in I think the closer people ought to the AI field in the more they deployed themselves the better their capacity to understand the problems but in the wider population. That promise is it's as I say it's not being explicitly made but it sort of implicit in the use of terminology on. I think there's very many reasons why that won't happen. I think is really interesting question in how you would build such a thing and I don't want to suddenly turn it into a conversation around artificial general intelligence because I think that that's also a separate thing. There's a danger of blundering into this and I think some professionals doing as well some of the conversations you from researchers who are doing extremely good work and doing things that we didn't dream we would be able to do some number of years ago like in translation or transcription or image recognition. Believed that this means something more about what we've achieved intelligence at any basically doesn't these role perception tasks. What's interesting is the boundaries to which would be enough to push them so I don't think I would have necessarily known ten years ago. The quality of machine translations we would have got from what is basically a mapping and inputs to output mapping without having a core intelligence underlying this thing and it is interesting to what extent those those mapping za generating representations which represents the awkward human so G. P. T. Two I think interactions the key to a kind of extraordinary for the humanity of some of the responses of course significant weaknesses in those interactions to the lack of structure the lack of conforming to any real well narrative in the longer term but the direct one-to-one responses are quite extraordinary. Now I think all those things are amazing but they don't imply that we've got this very adaptable intelligence. That is capable of responding in sensible way to situations Utterly on conceived of before the system was deployed. Which is what you have in effect with natural intelligences Hayes. Yeah exactly so. Maybe we need to think of these these tools and be excited when we see moving the needle around flexibility. And perhaps were were over indexing on this word intelligence in maybe we just need like an internal cultural shift that hopefully would then sort of sift out to the people who are using these tools in this understanding that the great strides that. We're seeing around. This is in the way that we have increasingly made automated tasks more and more flexible but the ultimate flexibility is is an intelligence right. But can you even ever get
