"On this glorious medium called terrestrial radio welcome back you know I wanted to do somebody right now who has been a staple on the Cincinnati music scene for ever yes all she said no the great so you probably remember because he hears performed everywhere I mean no taste to Cincinnati Bluesfest you probably remember leroy Ellington in the E. funk band leroy got into the coordination consultation promo S. station business you're just a little while ago few years back has his own management company and just released Hey great and I mean a great CD one some live music recorded over the last year or so and I am just tickled to death to leroy is gonna join me right now and just talk about his life and the life of Cincinnati music leroy Ellie good how are you on this glorious Saturday I'm going great how are you doing can cause any better I'd be triplets you know that leroy the ticket when you get it yeah I heard that now listen give me a U. give me a little thumbnail here because I remember the E. funk band and that you guys were all over the place back in the day but yet you elected to leave there I want to say maybe five six years ago why sell we had a great run he country and lasted for about twenty two years and and there was no no real reason to the band was still going strong we were still playing as much as we wanted to play and playing a lot of high profile events but what about that actually about eight nine years ago I started my business and welcome my career I've spent most of my time really in the business of of playing music for money to pay my rent pay my mortgage and and and get through life leroy hold on a second musicians pay rent under the popular belief come up with new really I really try to stay away from being too very involved in fighting a lot of musical recording a lot of music because it's such a competitive and hard thing to to find a prosperity and so I worked really hard with my group value Yvonne van who was very popular in working out a lot of high profile attention area a lot of corporate and wedding receptions and and and R. and put on a club type of denture so it was very prosperous it was a when I started my business about eight years ago all I felt like it was a natural ponds from the church to make the transition into what are what are called you know the the backside of my career where I can actually spend some time being more concerned about being creative and being something behind for I spent almost forty years performing as a musician and a from a variety of formats and you know I'll be honest with you one thing that really struck me is my brother in law passed away three years ago and that his funeral his former bandmates from a band that had been a part of a number years ago called the Putnam County papers from West Virginia they all came together for the funeral and they they they perform some of their original songs and I'll never forget one of the guys the dance and this is my favorite what's what's the well strong to me that I'd spend all these years since our performer in this town and I did with music and I had our recorded music for others I've written music and provided to other performers to to used my nail artist I'd never done anything on my own so I felt like you know my business is taken off everything is going well I can afford for the first time in my life too sort of be a little bit more creative about what I was doing yeah and I don't find myself in that way yeah I know I know your business was great I mean it it it helped shepherd so many musicians here in Cincinnati a very good friend of very good friend of mine marcado is someone yeah mark was more anybody ever heard mark play either yes add standing but if your mom you're a you know he was among the people that you help and shepherd along the way but you're right you you were too damn good you have to get back to business you know I'm saying so yes so so in in twenty nineteen you release what well then it was leroy Ellington Sacred Heart sanctified and I I told you the email I'm sit at home two three weeks ago it was the nicest night we had probably in the last two months and I'm listening to your CD in the next day you got a hold of me and it's kind of like this is carnal so let's let's talk a little bit about that Santa Claus worry but you had this live album that you were ready to roll with it all of a sudden we got the corona virus right exactly sanctified was released in and out it was March of two thousand nineteen really well received international radio play and and charted on what they call the roots music report inserted in the top fifty albums for quite a long time in two thousand nineteen but to be real honest with you our our our our our performers who loved being in the studio I'm not one of them I much prefer being a live performer books are being in the studio to me the studios just nerve wracking and it is so blatantly bring all of your an adequacy some quite that's where music is right now it used to be a better album and then you went out on the street to sell the album now I'm showing that you sell your product at the live show that's exactly right and and and what happened was that the the personnel but I'm I'm I'm fortunate enough to have a plan in my van and that's the reason why I gave the band a monitor the Sacred Heart stance was I felt like the sounds that we created what's not it's not just my sound I thought that's what the song slowed I had ideas for songs and then we all went in the studio and I thought to myself with some of the best musicians and songwriters with a cut and some legendary people around here people who I look up to and we we got in the studio and we just sort of comes out of those songs around and they became what they became organically through those players so the album gets released sanctify does very well my management company Balaji agency based out of Nashville Tennessee at the time that I saw on my representation deal told me that no one would really like to see is your your lives your your tanks I reckon come out and what what work at record real hard in terms of getting radio play NPR and record reviews around the country and and that'll work they should then we'd like to introduce the band and a lot of sense we want people to see that you really can't play because in the studio anybody can sound great if you have enough money to make it happen yeah yeah part of it is to be honest with you on a more comparable large setting in this particular ensemble players it is just a powerhouse of of Washington and people in this group yeah the leader I want to play some here for you all right I want I want everybody here I love this song is called him and don't want me I just love that song yeah I won't lose let.

NH now six ninety one eighty the Dalai and one oh nine ninety one and gold is trading at fifteen hundred fifty five dollars tryouts it's actually down a little bit oils down as well at down about to half of one percent at fifty eight oh eight so just waiting to see what happens with that I did mention the Hong Kong market we had dipped into negative territory after opening higher and we're now back at about a mixed up position up seven points for the axing index so very much a moving a moving picture this morning Doug yeah Brian earlier Xinhua had been reporting that experts in China see the possibility of the corona virus mutating and as you mentioned this press conference just getting underway in Beijing probably one of the things that is adversely impacting price action in the Shanghai composite now this mystery virus has spread to the U. S. at least six people have died in Asia that we know of the first suspected case now reported in Washington state and it comes as health care workers there admit the virus is more easily transmitted than originally thought now that takes us to Davos and the chief executive of Hong Kong Carrie lam who said the city has planned for the worst case scenario Hong Kong has already put in place highly vigilance system but this week we learned from previous incidence of a sauce and other infectious diseases that in order to bring the community together school control any infectious diseases we have to be very vigilant all right now this is no is a really a like an ammonia like sickness it first appeared last month in the central Chinese city of Wuhan now China had said that its tightening passenger screening at travel hubs ahead of the mass migration expected next week for the lunar new year the civil unrest in Hong Kong has produced a catastrophic drop in tourism we've got more from Bloomberg's Yvonne man all over Hong Kong restaurants retail stores and hotels are shuttering businesses are also shortening their hours and letting employees go the number of tourists reached an all time high of more than five point five million in January twenty nineteen it's become especially critical at this time of year in the run up to the lunar new year festivities but there's little chance that record will be surpassed this year the travel industry council says the number of tour groups arriving from China plummeted ninety percent in the four months through December compared with a year earlier retail sales have fallen for ten straight months dropping twenty five percent in November alone in Hong Kong Yvonne van Bloomberg daybreak Asia well after the bell here in the US we heard from Netflix apparently the company's beginning to feel heat from its new arrivals the streaming giant announced its expecting fewer subscribers this quarter fewer than what the street was banking on let's get more from Bloomberg Taylor rigs since the launch of apple TV and Disney plus analysts have raised concerns about whether customers would stay loyal to Netflix and it seems the answer is yes for now the competition is slowing their growth the company acknowledged that more people cancel their service in the US this past quarter due to these other services and rising prices and the market is said to get even more crowded is HBO MAX and Comcast peacock come online in the next few months the tepid outlook however overshadowed the better than expected fourth quarter report with beats for subscriber growth earnings and sales numbers in San Francisco I'm Taylor breaks Bloomberg daybreak Asia plans to a fifty two week low after saying it now expects the seven three seven Max to return to service some time in the middle of this year there are reports that a delay to the middle of twenty twenty might cost Boeing ten billion dollars the FAA says it has no timetable for the Max's return well let's get global news no six minutes past the hour one of the big stories here in the states happens to be day one in the impeachment trial of president trump.

"That means the equity market in Japan is coming online if you're joining us from the region good morning I'm the Christian or the Bloomberg interactive brokers studio in New York yeah and I'm Richard salon that we've got the big day break Asia presented by portfolio analysts pound by interactive brokers a savvy investors use portfolio analysts to create a consolidated view of that finances and also check the health of that complete financial portfolio sign up for free I put feta analyst dot com right that's a look at things as they really materialize on this a mid week trading day here in Asia is at Bloomberg's Brian K. Irish it looks like the markets may drift up a little bit today it's not really clear yet in this early stage but we've got the Nikkei flat here I just don't fourteen points in the cost is just opened it is is not just a little bit higher up less than one point also the SX two hundred in Australia's trading up by about a third of a percent in New Zealand is up about two tenths of one percent there will be an important briefing out of Beijing this morning at ten o'clock investors will keep an eye on that we had some economic news this morning south Korea's economy expanded at a faster clip than expected in the fourth quarter GDP was up one point two percent that was the fastest pace since the third quarter of twenty seventeen and some investors want to miss this late yesterday afternoon Taiwan reported GDP expanding three point three eight percent in the final three months and that was faster than the previous quarter and also faster than economists estimates of two point seven eight percent one interesting line coming out of out of Taiwan and and the U. S. this morning that apple suppliers planned to begin assembling a new low cost iPhone next month that's according to people familiar as the company looks to address a wider swath of the global smartphone market at the five G. handsets that will be coming out later this year yield on the ten year one point seven eight percent oil at fifty eight thirty one and a couple of other things to point out the offer Chinese currency is weaker at six ninety eighty six and gold is at fifteen hundred fifty five dollars an ounce stuck to you well one of the things clearly that's been on driving a lot of the psychology this mystery corona virus that has spread from China to the U. S. now in Asia six people are known to have died and the first to suspected cases been reported in Washington state it comes as health care workers admit the virus is more easily transmitted than originally thought which takes us to Davos where Hong Kong chief executive Carrie lam said the city is planning for a worst case scenario Hong Kong has already put in place highly vigilance system because we learned from previous incidence of a sauce and other infectious diseases that in order to bring the call may need to gather cool control any infectious diseases we have to be very vigilant this is a new mon alike sickness in the first appeared last month in the central Chinese city of Wuhan now China has said it's tightening passenger screening a travel hubs ahead of the mass migration for the lunar new year festivities for shot all right well we got this is civil unrest in Hong Kong will so providing as some more bad news because it's produces a catastrophic drop in tourism details come from the victory one man all over Hong Kong restaurants retail stores and hotels are shuttering businesses are also shortening their hours and letting employees go the number of tourists reached an all time high of more than five point five million in January twenty nineteen it's become especially critical at this time of year in the run up to the lunar new year festivities but there's little chance that record will be surpassed this year the travel industry council says the number of tour groups arriving from China plummeted ninety percent in the four months through December compared with a year earlier retail sales have fallen for ten straight months dropping twenty five percent in November alone in Hong Kong Yvonne van Bloomberg daybreak Asia well here in the U. S. after the bell we heard from Netflix the company reported a solid fourth quarter by adding over eighteen million subscribers globally that's an increase of about twenty percent from last year however the company says that kind of growth will fall short next quarter and investors are grappling with whether the streaming giants days of accelerating growth are over Paul Sweeney is co host of Bloomberg surveillance and on TV and radio their costs a program to continue to escalate so the kind of brought up some of these fundamental issues but now it'll simply be a question of how many subscribing services will the market bear and we'll never sixty one and I think most of faux very comes with a Netflix will be one so they've been a little chopper or has been a little shop in trading of Netflix in the late U. S. session higher right now by about two percent yeah Boeing though having a really rough time of it had data got plunging to lose that we haven't seen for a year after saying it's not expecting the seven three seven Max to return to service some time in the middle of this year there are reports of a delay to the middle of twenty twenty may cost Boeing some ten billion dollars the FAA said it has a new timetable for the Max's return all right here we are at six minutes past the hour time to get you the latest in global news in Washington it's the impeachment trial of president trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has altered.

"For control and British grocery giant Tesco has suspended its supply of Christmas cards from a Chinese factory but the allegations of forced labor China is taking steps to further open up its industries Yvonne van I'll have that story Sunday talk shows bristle with impeachment debate Biden calls for healing the nation remembering deaths of the homeless I'm mark mills with global news the giants get by the red skins in overtime in week sixteen of the NFL season the jets Jill the Steelers to damage Pittsburgh playoff hopes New York ambushes Anaheim at the garden in NHL action I'm Donna page with those stories and more coming up in Bloomberg sports that's all straight ahead on Bloomberg daybreak Asia on Bloomberg eleven three oh New York Bloomberg ninety nine one Washington DC Bloomberg one oh six one Boston Bloomberg nine sixty San Francisco Sirius XM one nineteen and around the world on Bloomberg radio dot com and via the Bloomberg business at it's now eleven in the morning in Tokyo which means the Japanese market will go on lunch break at the bottom of the hour if you're joining us from the APEC region good morning I'm dead prisoner the Bloomberg interactive brokers studio in New York and I'm Paul Allen and city rich good afternoon from me one minute past one on Monday afternoon on what is a shortened and broken trading week with Christmas and opening day holidays so how we shaping up on this we can see some low volumes that I definitely low volume as of right now a mixed picture but if you back up a step Paul barren mind that the U. S. equity market was on a tear Friday we close it records across the board for the Dow the S. and P. and the nasdaq and within the last hour we had the news on China cutting some import tariffs beginning January first will impact that story in a little bit of a detail momentarily we've got stability in the yen after some weakness during the New York session Friday one oh nine forty two and that the Japanese equity market is higher with the Nikkei of about three tenths of one percent in Hong Kong hang sang better by two tenths of one percent the Shanghai composite opened negative we're not pushing up about a tenth of one percent we had a trade data export numbers really for the south Korean market first twenty days of December overall a drop of two percent this is year over year but if you look at the semi conductors alone chip exports were down sixteen point seven percent that is been a persistently weak area of the south Korean economy Korean one right now down about a tenth of one percent against the dollar so where weaker and in the equity space the cost with off about two tenths of one percent meantime in Sydney SX two hundred is down about three tenths of one percent and where the ten year treasury is concerned we're now yielding one point nine one percent fall in that's in the Tokyo session let's go back to that store you mentioned earlier Dr the Chinese government sample count import tariffs for goods including frozen bulk pharmaceuticals paper products and some high end components a metal starts from the first of January merrily we spoke with Dominic Schneider he's head of commodities and Asia Pacific currencies at UBS he said he doesn't expect things to improve tremendously things are at least moving in the right direction our face one deal was all about the easy stuff will have to tough stuff at the later stage but at least we have some form of agreement and it shows that US and China can agree and I think that kind of hope is going to fuel probably asset market and investors for two thousand and twenty the Chinese government says the cuts are being made to promote high quality development of trade officials from Japan and South Korea will be meeting today for their first formal talks in more than a year and interestingly China will be the mediator Seoul and Tokyo have been in a bitter dispute on an array of issues since after the second World War lately the focus has been right on the issue of trade and Japanese export controls on materials used to make semiconductors now the technology is considered very sensitive in Japan became concerned about what it saw as south Korea's insufficient security well over the weekend Japan's Asahi Shimbun reported that these cards have been lifted you know they've been really been inflicting a great deal of pain on south Korean chip makers and as Bloomberg Brian faller tells us on the Japanese side as well they hit Japanese suppliers of those goods and and it's something that the Japanese companies were not happy to see in addition to those export controls Japan remove South Korea from the list of trusted export destinations which is all about how quickly they carry out checks it imports to make sure they're okay and as I mentioned a moment ago the south Korean government to reported earlier today exports in the first twenty days of September down just two percent against last year but again the chip exports highly sensitive industry down nearly seventeen percent in the first twenty days of December Paul what China is taking steps to further open up its industries we've got more on that story from Bloomberg's Yvonne man China's economy is growing at the slowest pace in three decades and private firms are increasingly facing tougher access to capital the new government planned targets twenty seven million private.

N. secretary general however there was some progress made at this meeting in Madrid special envoys from over two hundred or nearly two hundred nations were in attendance and they agreed to a more limited set of measures to rainy and climate change now one of the contentious issues here is whether historic polluters could be held liable in the future for economic losses suffered by poor countries as there is of of climate catastrophes climate change certainly behind the developments in Australia that we're seeing play out smoke blanketing Sydney now declared a public health emergency aid coalition of Australian doctors and researchers say air pollution across Australia's most populous city and parts of the eastern state of New South Wales have reached levels as much as eleven times higher than the threshold to be called hazardous now most of the research that we have seen on the toxic effects of air pollution is really tight to burning fossil fuels but Bloomberg's Jason Gail says this situation is different and so I see provides a fairly unique opportunity to look at what happens when it's mostly would smoke that is blanketing a city and for a prolonged period and says what's happening in Sydney is really quite unprecedented size scientists are hoping to be able to really get age war that the health impacts of these on the short end and medium to hospital admissions ambulance call.

"Seaboard of the United States and seven thirty AM in Beijing in here in Hong Kong I'm Richard Solomon and I ran Curtis also in Hong Kong Hong Kong police by the way say that they can handover polytechnic university today back to the administration that ends in eleven days seeds police and fire services officers were in there yesterday and they found chemicals and weapons but no protesters so that's one thing we did have a number of protesters gathering in various places yesterday one of them was right here across from us in a Bloomberg headquarters in Hong Kong at Edinburgh place and it was a rather large rally to thank the United States for what they said was support for Hong Kong and you could see a number of American flags are scattered about so that leads us to the markets what will the markets do today what I'm saying that we're headed a little bit higher this morning although mixed is probably the right call and the reason I'm saying that is that it just seems like with no retaliation from China that investors are are are starting to lean toward moving on you've got China futures up hang sing index futures up we've also got Nikkei futures up the cash market in Australia is also up and it's also up in New Zealand there's a lot of market still to go though and we'll get to those shortly we shot all right well we got any report warning to the home Kong's unemployment may be about to rise as good details from Bloomberg's Yvonne man main house says the unemployment rate here in Hong Kong could jump to five percent next year if the ongoing protests continue that means nearly two hundred thousand people could be out of work Ming vase cites a government report saying that a thousand businesses could shut following the Chinese lunar new year holidays as a catering industry implodes unemployment here recently increase slightly last quarter to about three point one percent in Hong Kong Yvonne van Bloomberg daybreak Asia sources say Morgan Stanley has fired or placed on leave at least for traders after they allegedly conceal hundreds of millions of dollars in losses these were losses on trades link to emerging markets it's said to be investigating whether the for miss mark securities to conceal as much as some one hundred forty million dollars in losses we're also hearing the company apparently already booked to some of the losses in the third quarter okay with the holiday shopping season in the United States is officially underway the Macy's Kohls target Best Buy in Walmart old open for business in many locations it's thanksgiving day but flicking managing director of strategic resource group says consumers are willing to spend but only on certain things auto sales will be strong economy strong off price strong with the demarcation of a lot of trouble in the department store sector and even tougher times ahead for department stores the king is focusing record holiday spending this month and next all right well speaking of automobiles Nissan pumping more than three hundred million dollars in two new factory technology all around the world more on that from Bloomberg at Cory the Japanese automaker is boosting automation for installing power trains and other technology at its factory in Kochi the plan is to roll out similar moves globally as it battles falling sales in key markets including the U. S. session about us some kind of I agreement on phase one trade deal between the US and China however C. N. B. C. had reported earlier the Chinese officials have become a little troubled by president trump's recent commentary that there was no agreement on phasing out terrorists so we had the gains in the states yes but muted gains nonetheless technically we were at record highs the Dow the S. and P. in the nasdaq each up roughly a tenth of one percent but now with the risk off that we're seeing in markets it has produced a stronger yen and a weaker NY K. the end right now at one OO eight fifty three against the box and then where the Nikkei is concerned down the half of one percent in Hong Kong hang Seng weaker by about a tenth of one percent similar decline on the main line for the Shanghai composite in Seoul though the cost be down by more than eight tenths of one percent we've got the Korean won the weakening against the dollar by about four tenths of one percent and as I mentioned earlier ASX two hundred in Sydney pushing up by a tenth of one percent seeing a move into U. S. and the democratic presidential race after several days of campaigning in Iowa centers Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are shifting over to New Hampshire where Sanders is trying to recreate his twenty sixteen when joining me is when the vengeance of Benjamin sons limber his politics editor sorry they're winding path okay one extra syllable so is center is going to have a difficult time recreating his win against Hillary Clinton is in twenty sixteen well he certainly is more opponents this year so it's a little hard to tell plus he's got another new Englander on his flank Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts and of course the name recognition of Joe Biden however he beat Hillary in twenty sixteen in New Hampshire with sixty almost sixty one percent of the vote so that was a pretty solid were behind you Bernie statement from from New Hampshire and New Hampshire of course can you know have a big impact on the rest of the race it could also be soon forgotten with South Carolina and Nevada following after but he's certainly making that case this week in centers is complaining that the media has focused too much on his dropping poll numbers but they are dry thing and has downplayed surveys that shows strength for him tells about his numbers versus Warren's will yes his numbers are beginning to flag a little bit because he's not giving anyone a new reason to vote for him so you have the fans of Bernie Sanders who were there in twenty sixteen and many of them are still very loyal to him and they will follow him you know into the wall along the campaign trail but you have alternatives now you have on the left you have Elizabeth Warren with her very practical very calmer and more normal for lack of a better term you know I'm not really into that here's my plan it's a very progressive plan it is a very far left plan but it's a plan and you know she's not going on about the big which was he does go on about the big corporate interests but it doesn't have that sort of Sanders you know wild haired yelling sort of approach to it which is very attractive to some voters Sanders a plan but he's got a warrant and then of course there's you know good old Joe Biden and Kamilla Harris who gives you sort of another alternative so there are plenty of alternatives and you know I could list all twenty but if you don't you don't need to list I think you have enough there with that with the top rung so it just less than a minute here but it when is buying going to turn his attention to New Hampshire I don't know I mean I think he will soon remember that he's got till February he will probably be spending a lot of the rest of this month raising money and spending some more time in Iowa just to sort of lock that down and then he'll probably spend some time in Iowa there may also be the strategy to let Sanders have New Hampshire will just have to see how that works that's interesting well thanks so much Wendy that's when the Benjamin some cheese Bloomberg news.

"Okay around. Okay. So yes, professional year stands like, it was very busy. But rewarding this past year. Have you picked up any life skills? Have you picked up any or sweeping? I figured out how to sleep in it. Yeah. I don't know what happens things which to my body. And it went, you know, what this is vital for your meaning now recognize the need for it. Or you're able to able to sleep. I'm able to actually shut my brain off. I guess to the extent that I can be unconscious for longer than five hours. Wow. Which isn't grace was tough. This was took thirty two years to get to that when I was doing orphan black. I think I destroyed my ability to sleep because adrenaline was like coursing through my body at weird times because we'd start some first season would start at five AM on Monday. And then by Friday, we'd be starting at five PM and going till five AM on Saturday on Friday and then start again five AM on Monday. So my body was just like windy, one adrenaline constantly shoot it out now. And then and then I would not singer. Yeah. So now, you're embracing the world of sleep isn't a good thing when you're in the middle of Broadway show, but I guess great. Oh my God. It's so have you ever done? It have you ever slept. Well. Consistently. Oh, yeah. I'm really one of the few things. I'm good at sleeping, really? I can't sleep on a plane. I should say that I'm not one of those that would be like a superpower on. So I don't know how people can do that. I would kill. I would really kill for the two prong skill on points and not worry at all not to give a shit like literally not worry at all about nine. Oh about Dyna DyN parts explosion in the fall, and the whole not worrying about that. And the sleep those two things. I would I would I feel. Those two things. Though now, maybe some hypnosis can meditation get that head space TM. Do you started to do it? Embarrassed to say again, though, I don't know why just like any. I've had so many people feel like heavy tried motivation. I'm like shut up now able to specs say how I you. I'm Jackman I respect he's big into the TM. He is. He is done the TM. Yes, I've done like sit and have a guy talking in my ear for five minutes. And then I'm like, great, I meditated that was awesome. Those excellent. What's next consider what you were just talking about in terms of like the lack of sleep? And the dreaded in high doesn't sound like meditation was only like kit necessarily naturally. No. But it's a great counterpoint to network because network is such an intensely energize show, and so- Connecticut and so distracting like it's a distracted piece. And I think a lot of us as actors navigating that in different ways trying to figure out how to kind of be a focal focus throughout it. And then also the audience, I think. It gets very distracted. And kind of which I think contributes to our focus like it's all kind of a big mash of yet. Well, let's let's talk a little bit about the production. Because it's very unique. It's like it's so it's this direct the cedar director named Yvonne van Hove heave van Hoven. So and we were talking a couple of is very unique. And this one, you know, if you don't know network, first of all go back and see the film because that's great too. But it's a really it was it was done in the seventies. And really commentary on media and the confluence of news, and entertainment, and it sounds cliche to say. But like watching it it is it's super relevant..
