"He had been hospitalized twice. He had a record of hospitalization. He was a nice nosed paranoid schizophrenic. He'd had to mental breakdowns that we know of. Yeah document setting precedent for seems like a logical a logical defense but Hawkeye decided to. Here's the thing though. Also I feel like if you would murdering people and your defense was insanity. Would you hide the bodies you wouldn't know between the difference between right and wrong is an insane person? I feel like out the window. Had the bodies I am not saying that corona didn't know what he was doing I believe the one krona knew exactly what he was doing. What I'm saying is is if you were his attorney. It seems like that would be the obvious defense that you would use just poked two thousand holes in his defense then the and I'm like no but then you could say obviously he's insane. He basically autographed the bodies. No fucking person would do that. No not insane stupid. I'm just saying he could've worked right. It seems logical to use it but hawk decided to throw out all of that. Okay he also never even made mention of corona schizophrenia during the trial and called no witnesses really and I will say. Maybe it's because this attorney took on the case in return for the exclusive literary and dramatic rights to Coronas life story that was the payment. The payment was coronas life story. Okay that is a conflict of interest for sure. Doesn't it seem like it? Yeah it's a bizarre. It's weird are you allowed to. Actually I feel like set your case up Walker and his case up for appeal later down the road. Well there's a little foreshadowing of or you a job. Cassie the presiding judge was disappointed in the trial proceedings. He made he made it known the whole time because like I said the whole trial was kind of out of control right. During the trial krona also suffered two consecutive heart attacks which further delayed the trial. This whole thing was insane. Oh yeah it's crazy. Yeah finally on January nineteen seventy-three one corona was found guilty and sentenced to twenty five consecutive life sentences. Okay I also want to note that during this trial. California had abolished the death penalty The nineteen seventies what is now referred to as the Golden Age of serial killers? Probably wasn't the best time to do now. Absolutely not nineteen seventies were the golden age of serial killers. Now we're in a very different time. Where the golden age of mass murderers but shooters mass shooters yeah. It's just ironic. That was the Times ironic that they chose to do that. In nineteen seventy eight corona was granted a retrial as his first attorney was ruled incompetent. So Hawk was determined incompetent. Which yet sounds like he just wanted a book deal and was like ye-ye-yeah Mr Corona whatever. We're going to get through this child but I have the rights to hear Your Life Story. I don't even know how that's I. Loud God leave it to a sleazy lawyer to like have the are being mean to this lawyer. Why he's a lawyer. I don't care but like have it leave it to a lawyer. It's typical lawyer to be like. Oh by the way I'm going to represent you for your life story you're going to be in prison and I'm GonNa make a million bucks on your life story which he clearly fucking didn't because he didn't do shit with this story well yeah He. He was a crap biographer because we have no idea of corona's childhood background so Shit Shit Job on that trial shit job of owning. Somebody's life story. Yeah basically yeah. Corona's new attorney at his second trial called some fifty witnesses and the defense attributed the murders to coronas. Now deceased brother Nabi Dod so so they blamed it on Navy Dot yes who was dead at the time of the second trial. Okay interesting it is interesting and I wouldn't be surprised if Nabi dot had something to do with it just because the first attack did take place at his restaurant if he had to have known who or what that whole situation was about. Well I don't know it depends because you and I both been in the silver dollar multiple times and it just depends on if the layout is the same because right now where the restrooms are. It's like you can see who like the bathrooms are down a hallway and you can see who's going into the restrooms you know you're just kind of depends on what the lay of the restaurant was and if the bathroom was secluded and maybe there was a possibility that nobody saw who it was. But I mean I would notice a man holding machete covered in blood. Coming out of a restroom yes or just notice a machete general. That's a large weapon. It's not a tiny little knife in somebody's pocket. Yeah you're right but maybe you could hide it in your in your coat the machete coat your trenchcoat. Yes maybe just seems suspicious and I wouldn't be surprised if navy dot at least knew about what was going on right. The prosecution's main witness was Mexican consulate. Who had met with corona while he was in jail he claimed corona told him. Yes I did it but I am a sick man and a sick man can't be judged by the same standards as other men. But the Coronas Attorney countered this claiming that Corona had not actually said. Yes I did it but a hypothetical if I did it right. The Prosecution also dismissed Navy Dad's involvement because there was no evidence he was even in the country at the time because remember he had fled to Mexico right after the lawsuit. Yes although he could have come and gone he could have been there for some of it. We just don't really know I mean for all we know he could have planted the receipt on the bodies but he was out of the country for at least some of the crimes okay. The trial took seven months but the outcome was the same corona was found guilty again right because he did it because he did it. Corona served his sentence in Corcoran state. Prison Corona was attacked in prison and blinded. And what I really. Wow that's weird that's intense. Yeah in two thousand sixteen at his last parole hearing. He finally admitted to killing some of the men but claimed it was because they were trespassing. He was Abbot. Why were their penises? L. Yeah he never really admitted to his crimes fully and he also was known to refer to the men as why knows as a way of dismissing the magnitude of his crime riot he just kind of after it while they were y knows who cares. Yeah well we care like fucked up and he never really admitted his true crimes. Although it they were clearly sexually motivated crimes right. Well I think okay so the only thing maybe I do know about the case was I think. Natividad wasn't was he homosexual. Yes Dodd was Natividad Native Dad also known as an Avi Dodd Navidad. Sorry was homosexual. Okay that's what I thought. On on one of the victims there was what they called homosexual literature. I'm assuming it was a magazine probably a Porno Pornographic magazine. Yes found on one of the victims. I'm probably was coronas since he I guess was just bearing his garbage with the bodies. I don't think that if he picked somebody up on the side of the road they would have just had a porno MAG pocket. Here's a theory. What if lured them there with a pornographic magazine? He could have done that. So the prevailing theory based on the evidence was that Corona would dig a hole in advance. Pick his victim sexually assault and then stabbed them to death. He never fully said what happened. I it is frustrating to me that there's so little known about his early life And exactly what happened during the murderers because he never fully admitted to it? But it's a different sort of an attitude with this crime that a lot of serial killers that we see because usually serial killers that we see. We'll talk about their crimes. After they're caught and embellish on their stories even make their stories sound even worse. Pretty much every serial killer that I can think of has done that though claim that they were possessed by a demon like son of Sam or there say that they were cannibals when they really were all there say that they have higher numbers. And they really. Did you know what actually want? Crony sounds a lot like Ted Bundy to me. Ted Bundy really is like we all know that you are disquiet quit stop. Yes the excuses. I mean it sounds like one. Crony used his mental illness as an excuse he didn't tell the full scope of his crimes. Like Ted Bundy did not tell the full scope of his crimes. Hey tried to act like. He didn't do all the horrific things that he did. Yeah and the only reason we know that because of the frenzy work that was done on his victims remains. Yeah and at the time in the seventies the same kind of friends at court couldn't be done and that's probably why we don't know any more details. Yeah so I feel like this. One Corona is just your average piece of Shit serial killer. I WANNA take responsibility. Just like he was objectify his victims and he definitely used his mental illness. He definitely blamed his mental illness for why he did the things that he did. Just because you suffer from a mental illness doesn't mean that you would do these things no absolutely not mental. Illness does not make you a murderer. No and that's basically what he was trying to claim which is total bullshit. Yeah in fucked up. He just didn't WanNa take responsibility. Just did not want to take responsibility and I think it may be that he didn't want to admit that he was attracted him in. I Dunno yes all right. So let's get back to his victims. The twenty five victims of Juan Corona were honored in two separate memorials. One at Saint Isidor Church and one Yuba city high school's football field. A woman named Judy Freeman tried to fundraise for a memorial marker for the fourteen men who were buried together. I'm assuming they were not claimed and Chicago. Funeral supplier heard the story and offered him marker free of cost. Oh that's nice. The community was kind of mixed honestly. Some people were incredibly saddened by it other than the fact that it was a bad mark on the town right because the victims were transient while others were obviously devastated. By the fact that this happened to people who were basically guests of the community If you're interested in learning more about this case please visit the deviation. Diaries the blog that we mentioned at the top of the show. She has a lot of information about this case as well as other crimes in the Yuba Sutter area. Yeah she her. Name's Anna and she actually is a forensic anthropology student at our local college Yeah and she seems like a pretty cool chick. She's great at research and She does cover a lot of other cases and she just is Huzzah thirst for knowledge when it comes to true crime in this case as with any case. I hope he always remember the victims. I these twenty five men and also the nine identified names on one Coronas Ledger so I am going to read the names of the recovered victims of this six week. "Part of the land. That was forced to sell was located just forty miles north of new Helvetica and centered around the confluence of the Uber and feather rivers. The land was sold in eighteen forty nine to a small consortium of men headed by Samuel Brennan who quickly established Yuba city in the middle of it. Almost immediately. The fledgling city was overshadowed by Marysville. The town on the opposite Bank of the fed the river which newcomers found much easier to access but sued it began to prosper and over the next one hundred years the city grew steadily from a population of three hundred to seven and a half thousand. Then in December nineteen fifty five a series of devastating storms battered, northern California. After days of relentless rain, just after midnight on December twenty fourth Levy broke on the West Bank of the fed river, sending a wall of water twenty one feet high cascading into the county and flooding ninety percent of Yuba city. Seventy four people were killed. Five years later, a Boeing fifty two bomber plane carrying two three point eight megaton thermonuclear bombs flying into the vicinity of Yuba county. Experienced a sudden and inexplicable loss of pressure in the fuselage. After ordering the rest of the crew to bail out the heroic pilot managed to stay in the cockpit. Just long enough to steer the plane away from Yuba city before bailing out himself. A totally four thousand feet. The plane would eventually crash into a Bali field. Just eleven miles to the west of the city. Miraculously no, radioactive material was released as a result. In late spring, nineteen seventy-one a Yuba county peach farmer noticed a large freshly dug hole on his land that had no apparent purpose? When he found it filled in the next day, he became suspicious and called the police to investigate it. Digging away the fresh dirt they found a man's body underneath riddled with stab wounds. The man was just one of at least twenty five migrant farm workers from around the Yuba county area that serial killer and Yuba city resident one corona was eventually convicted of murdering. Corona had been previously diagnosed with schizophrenia, which some believe was triggered by the trauma. He suffered as a witness to the worst affects of the nineteen fifty five flood. Another five years later the school bus carrying the Yuba city. High school choir broke through a guardrail just outside the city of Martinez plunging thirty feet to the ground. Twenty eight teenagers from the city, and they're chaperone were killed instantly in what was the worst school bus accident ever recorded in the United States at the time. And yet incredibly despite this litany of tragedy the one for which the area would become most well known had yet to pass. The story most often referred to as the Yuba county. Five is a bizarre and heartbreaking mystery the remains to this day unexplained. Mum, have you seen? My Gators shirt. Tried Gary from the laundry room a needed for the game tomorrow. Gary mom, Ida appeared a moment later holding the base t shirt complete with its gateway Gators logo emblazoned across it all washed and ready to go. Thanks, Gary taking it before running to place it with the rest of his kit that he'd laid out in preparation for the next day. Just then the sound of a car horn could be heard coming from the turquoise mercury Montego that adjust pulled up outside the front of the house. The here said Gerry excitedly as he grabbed his jacket and headed to the door. Remember got a big game tomorrow. Don't let me sleep in. He said, yes, I know said Ida before kissing her son goodbye and seeing him out the door. It was February twenty fourth nineteen seventy eight in the small district of olive Hirst just to the south of Yuba city far off in the distance the northern tip of the Sierra Nevada mountains could be seen. It's pine covered ranges still capped with snow down in the valley. However, it was barely jacket whether as a pale sun was slowly beginning its final descent toward the horizon. Waiting for Gary outside in the Montaigue. Oh was thirteen year old driver and north vehicles. Jack Ma drew accompanied by thirty two year old Ted we and the twenty four year old Jack Hewitt. The others shouted for Gary to hurry up as he raised to the car and jumped into the front seat. Moments later, they pulled away. His Ida waved them off from her front door. A few minutes later, they were parking up outside a small house onto later street in Yuba city to collect the fifth and final member of the group twenty nine year old Bill sterling. "That was to have the kids stand on the pitcher's mound in tball so i mean you just can't deal with parents tomorrow well in you were city which is in northern california they had a team called the hunters when the hunters hit the hardcore this next season the basketball team they'll be doing it with a different coach the district has cut ties with the decorated yuba city high school boys varsity coach mammo rafique who wants led the afghan national basketball team who knew afghanistan known for its poppy seeds and high school basketball has anyway he's run the fourteen forty basketball academy in yuba city for years despite a long list of accomplishments to his credit some parents say he just a little too aggressive that sometimes he tells the boy that they're not very good and they need to hear that they're good they need to hear only positive things so they said that this guy needs to get out of there and enough of them complained that even though this guy had a long list of accomplishments and was hugely successful they cut him loose they got rid of him because he wasn't as nice as he could have been and this is a kind of a thing that you're seeing all over the place the parents only want their kids you know every parent in this day and age i didn't i'm not terribly athletic.
