"I. Welcome back everybody now for our our the news of the week. Now we wanna talk about what's going on. We'll start with our national parks in the wake of this unprecedented. Rv boom with so many millions of new people coming to the rv lifestyle. It is having a major effect on our national parks. And so as a result of that They've acted at the most popular in demand. National parks some new policies and some new laws and the first thing is that many of them are now requiring you to make in advance you have to even buy online A reservation at times reservation to enter the park at a certain time and date the only a short narrow window that you can do. 'cause that's the first one that could get confusing. Couldn't because if had your time to reservation and people were lined up and you couldn't i presume they would be gracious. Well ya there's a big lineup and you can't get in plus there's fee. There is a theme reservation now. There's already an entry fee. Right that hasn't changed is still pay that or if you have that Golden pass or whatever they call it now for seniors so he can get in free but there is a fee to get in and this is a new fee on top of that for that time reservation. It's not that much in a theater. Just a couple of dollars but you know it seems like everything starts off small and then it gets more costly and not that long period of time but you can get in if you arrive before nine. Am or after six pm but that is what big lineup and it suddenly nine ten am chasing. Can you see that there is a whole lot of confusion out there and nobody needs all that stress. You know this vacation. Some kinda recount. Some of the things that are going on that is causing this to be such a mess. Cvs tv in denver has story with their reporters standing out in front of rocky mountain national park showing huge traffic jams and all sorts of confusion above the time entry. Many people didn't even know that it was in effect. They interviewed one visitor. Who with his wife and kids drove three hours to get there only to be turned away and it isn't just there in colorado that there's problems twitter's been full of photos showing long lines at grand canyon. National park will show some on our youtube. Rv lifestyle channel. There were massive traffic jams getting into the parks south entrance. But even once you got in and many cases parking spots all the parking lots were filled in people were driving around and around sometimes for a couple of hours and the trails were jammed to one photo will share on our youtube version of the podcast shows how crowded the trails down into the canyon was people were shoulder to shoulder. Going both ways on memorial day weekend there were over two hundred calls for emergency assistance at grand canyon. There were a lot of new hikers. Who tried that strenuous hike. Who didn't bring enough water. And with temperatures over one hundred degrees down in the canyon. You can imagine the medical problems they had to deal with in utah. The shuttle buses were so filled. Zion national park that some of those on the scene said they had to wait as long as two hours. The popular trails were all very crowded at arches national park. We saw a photo of so many people hanging around on the rocks that look like a crowd for music. Concert it did. I mean they were all happy is how could you not be happy at arches part. But you know it's amazing now i. This is not the slam the national park service. But that's what the situation is. Because of the rv. Boone and this these these new policies and we start to talk about the campgrounds. Now the campgrounds. Oh my goodness unless you have made at the most popular campgrounds if you have not made a reservation a year or more in advance sometimes more. You're not getting in now. You stand a better chance during the middle of the week and there are some national park properties. Were you can probably get in most days except weekends and stuff but This is tough. We're talking particularly the most popular parts you know. The yosemite yellowstone glacier Arches or zion. Those are huge parks with a lot of people. And i don't know what the solution is. But you know the one thing. We just have people from the state's trying to use these parks right now. Can you imagine when the crowd start coming who come from other countries busloads of people that come on guys. Yeah we don't have all those folks. Yeah that's still. Shut down foreign travel because of the you know the waiting to get the covid situation around the world settled so all these are without the normal crowds come from overseas. So what what do you do. What what what would we do. How do we solve this problem or cope with it. I think they're doing the best they can with all these suggested times. You're arriving but if it's going to be difficult to get everybody retrained and people just don't know through talking about that people nations gotta have patient. I have some patients. But people. Just don't know i don't know how you educate people then programs like this and and the ad we need to keep telling you about the time reservations. That are necessary. Okay time physician travel with a bunch of kids flat tire. You know things that happened down a little bit. We stop you. Go to the bathroom. You know we gotta get there before ninety third nine hundred ten to eleven a whole new layer of stress and then so patients obviously If you can make reservations try to not camp during the peak times should be weekends and you know right before the fourth of july on the fourth of july the week after the fourth of july. And if i can say those of you who made your reservations have done. Their homework made the reservation. If for some reason you can't make it. Please cancel belise so many people don't they just they don't show up now it's too late and then they have to hold us. Hopefully the phone services better than the first time we went out to yell gallo stone because we had a reservation and we couldn't get cell service to cancel. Yeah hopefully things have improved while y'all still has a lot of places where you can't get through You know and then the other thing is find alternate ways to camp you know do a lot more boone docking or mooch docking or widen your search around the popular national parks and stay at some of the commercial The.

colorado three hours youtube two hours twitter denver zion nine ten am first time Zion national park over one hundred degrees one visitor fourth of july first thing a year first one Cvs tv after six pm one photo one thing

"And this is just irritating to meat is well because they're reporting on it. Here. And The reporter. I puts the Dateline in Missoula, Montana. Missoula is nowhere near Yellowstone. You know that right? That person couldn't be bothered to give a crap about the geography of the Western United States probably has been to Montana once. Probably went to Missoula that you know what that must be What everything is and then just wrote Mazula on there. And Missoula. Montana is nowhere near Rio Study. At least have you tagged Like Bozeman? You'd be closer. Red Lodge freaking anything almost other than like Glenn dive. But no so doubly irritated. And then when I find out the bear doesn't eat her Tripoli irritated Ah, the aggravated grizzly did come within 15 ft of the woman trying to take a photo with her cell phone, despite several people screaming at her to stop and that she was too close. Yeah, so And here's what we'll do if they figure out who you are, even though he didn't get eaten, which you know would be nature's justice. They'll kick you out of all the national parks, not just the one you're screwing around them. I had. I went to school with people who were kicked out of the national parks for doing like weird off roading stuff because they're stupid. Can't they literally for long stretches of time? We're not able to gain entrance into like Grand Teton. Yellowstone Glacier, any of them. Keep a list, man. You don't want to be on the list, and that's how you get on the list. Going up. Take a selfie with a bear because you're stupid. Remember you want to take it without with Obama, but you won't take with the bear Cubs. Those were the best self ease those the ones that are remembered long after you're gone, even if it's almost moments after the Selfie when your first gone And another animal news, The owner of a Wisconsin zoo is still trying to figure out how his quote On athletic and overweight alligator got loose. Oh, no. Okay, but he was He's been returned, but he still can't figure out how he got out. Doc Hopkins of Doc's Harley Davidson in Wisconsin. Said he noticed the animal was missing Saturday morning. Of the four animals kept in the zoos. Outdoor pen, Only one racks escaped. We came out to feed the Gators today and he wasn't there. It's very strange never happened before. Won't see. Uh, did it video? Here we go. Yes, My favorite quote. All right. So Hopkins warned the public to be careful thing counter Rex, but noted that because of his failing health, he probably can't do much damage. The old Gator is very unathletic and quite overweight, said Rex, but noted that because of his failing health On terrible arthritis in his jaws. He can't open his job more than an inch and a half. So what most he might just slap you with his tail. So wait. You haven't unathletic overweight alligator seriously. If he was drunk, he would be Wisconsin. And you know what? Who knows? Maybe that's right with me. We went to a bar when all of that and you know when they were looking for So I probably going to run into is the fact that anyone were to see a Gator and Wisconsin. They probably just kill it. Actually out in them them parts where this guy's where the Harley shop is because they cut out the middle of nowhere by the Dells. All right, 8889347874, let's do this. Speaking the outdoor.

"We know the health club. Apparently they also have a foundation. Do a lot of entertaining these up. All right. So you're members take organization and you? You came to my attention. You sent me an email about this. It's really cool agreement he came to with the Bureau of Land Management up around towels in the Rio Grande del Norte area of New Mexico in southern Colorado of three families wanted to protect your land, get it into public domain. You are kind of the conduit that between the families and the BLM. So now these lands are Guess being managed by the BLM Is that correct? That's correct. Okay. All right. So, um These lands are are really, really a special area and we know them is the kind of centrally the Rio Grande del Norte. How many visitors do you estimate? Come to that not just to look at elk not just to hunt elk, but to fish and do all kinds of other recreation. That's the beauty of this area's. There is so much opportunity for us is the public to go experience this beautiful place, and I know you're New Mexico Chamber E think it was just about two years ago, had estimated that Nearly 200,000 visitors visit the Rio Grande del Nord National Monument each year, so that every year experiencing different things as you said anything from photography to fishing 19 fair would gather in etcetera just wandering around a high keen aimlessly, which you know, which is what we encourage people to do, especially in times like these when people need to get out door and relieve some stress. The way you know when people say Well, they're talking about Alec in the foundation. They just couldn't go on blast all these dark But you You said that the main purpose of this is to provide For the elk Movement for their migration, which keeps the elk herd healthy, allows protection for them to mate and a camp. Exactly. So this is a huge while of migration area estimated around 10,000 Alec, moving across that state line from Colorado to New Mexico, and just to kind of put it in perspective to what you all have that resource there in your state. You know, elk migrations are generally a fraction of that 10,000 is enormous. That's a massive migration. And if you think about across the country, we just we have a very unique thing in America. We still have massive migrations of wildlife moving across our country that is just very unique in the world. That doesn't happen very much anymore because of the fragmentation. So what we have is something very special that we want to protect. And we want to have healthy hurts into the future so that all generations in the future can conceive this and witness it. Jennifer, you have you been out to witness and migration? Have I have? Not This one in particular, This would be amazing. But yeah, I have your spirit spent a fair amount of time outdoors. Absolutely every chance I get. I get my young kids and my husband and I get outside every chance we can. And this past year was no exception. This is our escape, you know, And this is ah! What fulfills us and grounds us. When we talk about elk migration, they're not doing this alone. There's probably all kinds of other critters that see the L'd migrating and either follow them. Use them as a food source. Or just, you know, part of that that ecosystem, then environmental system that is kind of moving with the seasons. Absolutely so this so this area was identified by your New Mexico game and fish is research as one of four priority areas, priority landscapes in the state for deer, elk and pronghorn. So pretty big deal there and appreciate the New Mexico game and fish is attention to how critical these landscapes are. But also yeah. You have black bear Mountain lion. You know tens of smaller mammals birding out. There is incredible, so lots of opportunity to witness my life. We're talking large carnivores here that also migrate along, right? Right that that move, I would say move. Yeah, all right, Um, in Montana, I would imagine the foundation encompasses Will, which states Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, the obvious ones. Utah, New Mexico, Arizona. All the way out to the coast as well. Yet we're across the country and we're supporting out from North Carolina all the way to California and all three sub species of L. A So so political question here, Jennifer Political question. What is the relationship between the foundation and the ranchers? Who are not all that? I guess. Pleased within reintroducing wolves. His wolves wolves have, you know I have been a great boon to places like Yellowstone Glacier know to to move the elk along to help the forest out. Right, Right. Well, that's that predator prey that natural predator prey relationship that is part of our ecosystem and has been forever and when you get that off, balanced Or you introduced wolves into an area they haven't historically been that is going to cause some havoc. And that really goes to our state agencies in their management of species. Right. So how many hunting permits are they giving for? Elk? Um No. Is there 100 population of wolves? You know that That alone is a big question, but managing that hunter that hunter a swell asses that predator prey relationship is really critical to a balanced ecosystem. And the ranchers were trying to make a living with their wildlife. And you know, and then they, you know, they see the economic impact of will's coming along and eating their wildlife in their cattle, eating their sheep. And and maybe Threatening their families as well. So it's a delicate balance. Do you provide the lot of the data? Because you guys are out there? You're doing this research. You're out there anywhere. Are you counting animals? You're looking at animals, are you? Setting night cameras or trail cameras. We're usually working on the actual land landscape, so providing that healthy habitat that is absolutely needed. And then working with our state agencies on the management side of things need. Yeah. What do they need to be successful to help balance? Everything s so that you don't have You know someone's economic viability lost because because management is off you mentioned one of the efforts that you do is restoration of the landscape tells about that. Yeah, Absolutely. So just in this area as well in the Rio Grande and the tires slashed, no area We've done a lot of seeding work. We funded seeding work. We funded fencing. So wildlife friendly fencing. Um What private landowners need for their cattle but then also during the migration being able to lay that fencing down water development, So I think you mentioned drought earlier and you know, water development. It's critical so Providing those developments and then helping to maintain them. So we have state funding sources is direct right back on the ground through these types of crowd..

"The theater Roosevelt national park today on what's on your mind is the is it governor you still there yep I sure am okay so I I know you got to run and and and we do as well but I think it's important for people to realize that there are a small group of businesses in North Dakota that are impacted by an executive order and those people have between now and the end of the month to work for the department of commerce about a re opening plan beginning may one but everybody else is under no such restrictions that just obviously the same things they've been doing now to be smart right exactly mean so we you know healthcare all of health care was able to remain open if anybody close like the Dennis that was voluntarily they're working on a plan to re open through their association all the energy in ag doctors open so you know quite what Barzani was still open but places where we had people could congregate restaurants bars gyms movie theaters but you know and those some of those modified restaurant that's double down a great business would take out a personal care businesses where there's a lot of close contacts so those are those are the groups that we want to work with to try to help them build plans to get open everybody else we're was never closed so but North Korea is doing a great job what we know right now slowing the spread out with a large chunk of our economy going and that's again your code should be proud of that yeah I know yeah I'm gonna forward all the of the attacks and and calls that we received today so you can get a sense of what people are thinking but you know there is there's an overwhelming amount of folks who believe that the you know freedom is bad right now you know I mean that really that that just are not in North Dakota freedom well in our store right so I I I yeah I know the I know they appreciate the fact and then there's people also but as I said that they are very supportive is one my favorites tell the governor is competence his compassion and his leadership is second to none a dog twenty twenty four I don't know that references what's happening at twenty twenty four I don't know but I I'm just here to tell you their support but there's also a lot of concern out there so I I know you know that and I think the the the push beginning may want to be really important to do all these things and and be smart about it I love the north coast Mart hashtag we can do it the thanks for the time being right well I appreciate it we have to let the governor go hand let's see here okay when he's ready to go yes but one topic to the next the superintended the Theodore Roosevelt national park when the rosters with us but we did the talk about this with the with the governor earlier a moment ago Wendy how are you good morning I'm doing very well Scott thank you for the time today I have to tell folks that I I've I've received some attacks and and saw some comments on Facebook last night the cause me to just think what in the world why do we have to close the park and then I'm you know this is a good good example for me and for for everybody you do you do you dig in a little bit you find out okay well aren't that makes sense okay that makes sense that I don't have any less disappointment but I have a better understanding why the decision was being made and that when he was there nice enough to to join us today to talk a bit about it so explain to folks why that why the park has to be closed until may ninth well thank you so much for giving me some time to talk on the radio this morning and this is it this is an opportunity that one very rarely get in federal employment and getting to talk to people in our local communities and being able to explain some of our decision this was one of the hardest decision I've had to make it as a superintendent and I love this park and I know with the communities around us let us park I think one of the things that we were very surprised I was the amount of visitation we were getting after the secretary of interior secretary David Bernhardt and waived all of the fees to national parks in the United States which was I think a great movie it provides so many people to our national parks and we and I have great increase in visitation our monthly visitation went up about a hundred and five thank you in March that we were seeing really busy weekends that were equal to you and mid summer weekend keep in mind that we have a winter staff failed and of course you know they will be virus situation has been happening kind of simultaneously with our short staffed in our increased education so as you mentioned earlier human waste and bathrooms are definitely an issue in a limiting factor this time of year all toilets are the only things available in your area national park right now and we've had to come up with new standard operating procedures he knows Paul Klee let's we only have one of those about religion the north unit and five in the south unit the problem with the toilets in this is not a glamorous topic obviously but it is one of our most concerning topics because people will not use the dirty public toilets we've had some vandalism of our toilet toilet paper is being stolen we've had died GL dispensers stolen out of them as well and that we don't have the opportunity to start our flush toilet facilities Intel the temperatures start to rise and we don't have the danger for anything so those are some of the reasons why we made the decision to close in conjunction with our local community here in Medora local elected leaders and the North Dakota state department of health also a couple questions one is the numbers so the M. the numbers as a percentage I have been how much higher than you know like when we didn't have a coronavirus if you know your ago more than double okay more than double and and so that obviously would tax facilities a little bit how about just some sort of proactive we're gonna go get some Porter parties we're gonna we're gonna recognize that there's some people out of work right now and in do you know what maybe a looking for some open air but be able to to still serve a ticket but Porta potties will fall that reporter parties are very similar in Q. about it there are no hand washing facilities associated with port a potties or about twenty minutes and that's one of the guidelines from the CDC is that we encourage hand washing we discourage people from gathering in large groups actually I have a number from March twenty six which was a Thursday afternoon normally a very slow time of year especially in the north unit north unit as we all know is one of the undiscovered gems that we all have it in love in North Dakota and I know that residents of laughter he loves to go to the north north unit and recreation and we've seen a lot more people back reading from the local community so on a Thursday afternoon in March we had forty two people gathered at the oxbow overlook at the end of the record in the north unit that's the type of a situation that we find and controllable with are really small staff and law enforcement staff is you know bones this time of year and what we really would like to do is take three weeks to get our staff up to speed as the governor said we need to be North Dakota March about how we've reopened and prepare for the visitation that we know is coming I anticipate a very busy summer I would like to make certain that we are able to take care of our staff I'll take care of our communities and they were able to keep current interest rates to prevent the spread of the virus and to make sure that we have facilities there are going to need in need of people who are going to be in large numbers as soon as we open so what we should be doing go ahead that's I'm just saying that's a positive right I mean that's getting ready for a for about a big year because people are going to be traveling going to a lot and and by the way you told me last night that the you keep account I'm license plates and the you know the amount of license plates in the in the different locations was one of the reasons that the park a white white white there was a concern over the potential connection to the covert crisis is that right it really was hard to of our decision making process so last Saturday for example one of our law enforcement Rangers kept a log of seventeen different states that had visited the south unit in the north unit we've seen everything from Michigan California Washington Transylvania Virginia New York home of those states have really high levels of the virus and so when when we're looking at in forcing the governor's quarantine orders for people coming in from out of state we are unable to do that not campgrounds or anywhere else in part you know you can't just stop people and and say are you from New York and did you do your quarantine we can't do that with everybody so I think when when our North Dakota residents are seeing here is a lot of the larger parks in the west have closed Yellowstone glacier Grand Teton rocky mountain Grand Canyon and those parts because they're closed bring a lot of people who are in this time of year traveling around the United States looking for places to recreation I think we're seeing a lot of people from those parks that would have gone to those parts instead and as the governor told me the other day this is the problem we want to have we are at the top charism interaction in North Dakota I think two thousand fifteen fifty seven percent of the people who came to North Dakota came to North Dakota he says park we keep that going yeah yeah that's a good thing I will say for instance you mention the north you know having a lot of the out of state plates those are probably our neighbors that have moved here from there those places in right now sadly are out of work and those are the kind of people we want to the park now you know they should they arise the parking lot the parking and do everything on the other hand there's some people that are using the parking appropriately you have plenty of photos to show that so you you know you I assume the not the way you deal with that as more staff and you'll have that after after midnight right correct the sale on April twenty third we bring on the next wave of staff and not will allow us to quarantine those staff which we have to do many of those people are coming from out of state to prepare the parks just for example and a lot of sinkholes have opened up along our roads we actually had a sprinkle of that was large enough to swallow a bystander there is a dead bison in the bottom.
