"I'm John Baxter. This is the John Baxter show. Welcome Joe Pappalardo for popular mechanics writing about October 11th 2018 bike in our cause my drum in Kazakhstan This is Ross Cosmos, the semi official semi independent company Organization empire that is the most famous and the most successful. Astronaut corps in history, the Russian version, they did everything first except the moon. However, you will recall in the late 20th century and the early 21st century. The decision was made by the U. S to move a great deal of effort into the space shuttle and then to end the space shuttle that left no way up and down to the S. And so, therefore, NASA. Then fell into easy cooperation with Roskosmos to travel to and from the Iast says the U. S. Has a portion with its allies. The Russians have a portion with its allies on this state. October 11 2018. Joe is going to take us to the top of a rocket. A Soyuz rocket as two men plan what is meant to be a routine commute to the Isis Joe. A very good evening to you introduce us to Alexey of Chinon. From Yaroslava ll in Russia and Nick. Hey, NASA astronaut. What is their mission? The day they're sitting on top of the Soyuz rocket. Good evening to you. Hello. And thank you for having me as always. Yeah, They are really thinking about the seven months of work they're going to do in orbit on the space station. The they are Passengers on this spacecraft going Tio very if you will to the international space station, so they are trapped in that well trained Very familiar with the with the Soyuz, but they're essentially their cargo. Their cargo on in in a company or on organization or an empire, an aspect of the Russian Federation Roskosmos that's had trouble. You mentioned in your presentation of popular mechanics about the air leak that connected the air leak that was discovered in August of 2018 between mso nine. The preceding launched two I says. And the S U also mentioned that that there was no resolution at this point about who or what drilled a hole in an arboretum orbital module. You also point to the fact that Roskosmos has been truck been troubled. With AA quality control or so use failures, so he was a very reliable rocket for many decades. Is that in the mind of these two astronauts that there's been some trouble around them on the day they're launching I think it's more on the minds of Roth Cosmos, then Any of the front line. Certainly the astronauts or cosmonauts or even the ground crew. I think they're focused on their jobs and getting up there. But for every Crude launches important every launch is important, but for so use air being pressured by the Americans in space action, bowing of developing direct competitors using US money. They're being You know, they're very steeply price. Soyuz launches that they had a monopoly that's being threatened. They need every launch to be perfect and right this when the launch occurs, There's a lot of doubt about that. And a lot of new hopes rising in these commercial companies in the U. S. And since this happened obviously, space is delivered astronauts to the space station, so they're fears were very well grounded. They needed it to be perfect. And they didn't need any more skepticism. Heath onto the Soyuz, which is Yeah, but an incredibly reliable spacecraft has a great service record. And Ah ah, but this day was going to be really tested the Soyuz engineering and that's safe directly was going to be pushed to the limits. Nick. Hey, the NASA astronaut and his family is present. Ah, more more. Many people are present from NASA. Hey, is married to an air force. Lieutenant Colonel is a time of professor of aerospace studies and his two young sons, I believe were also present. Is it routine that Roskosmos Gives opportunity for family members to travel to the cosmodrome for launch is is that a regular thing? Jurors is special. No, it's a the family members are not only invited there given very specific roles in some of the protocols in diplomacy and pomp and circumstance leading up to the launch and It's all scripted and planned and that part NASA prepares the families for a lot of years where you're going to meet. Here's the dinners, years that they're going to serve. You know, this comes up. Here's howto answer a little media training that kind of thing. But they don't Kind of trainer prepared the family very much for a launch emergency. It's such a distant, you know, saying it's such a remote possibility. It's not something we spent time on. But but Katie Hagen Is in the military, and it has been deployed and is in part in part of her job crisis Communications and she knows space launch backwards and forwards as well from from working in Florida. She knows she wants to be closer to the the raw information. She doesn't want to be out in the field closer to the Rockets to be closer to the NASA leadership, who have the direct pipelines in case something goes wrong. And so she positions herself and her keeps her son's close by and her father, um, and watching the launch from the command command room, So she's got an amazing vantage point. When things in the launch goes wrong, she could follow exactly what happened. As it's happening because she's close to the national leadership. So which is a blessing and a curse is it turns out for her? They launch is meant to be straightforward..

"Getting ready for game five tonight, boss. I know so this our shows going to drop on Friday, which is, I'm happy that it's too, too, because we won't know the outcome of this series yet. We can talk about every different scenario. You're down on the ice with the best seat in the house, in my opinion, I, I have to ask you because you're so great at this with all the craziness and I don't think it gets crazier than a Stanley Cup final in, in the arenas. How do you remain so calm your when? You interview someone is if you're doing it on NPR, I can't believe it. I don't know probably some experience. I've been down there, a long time in the league thirty one years, but you know had a chance to be involved with two Stanley Cup finals as a scout in a player coach, I should say, so it's something that I really appreciate at something never take for granted. But the spirit of cooperation with the players coaches over fifteen years that we've been doing this has been phenomenal really has to get it. Get what they're getting when they when they're sitting there talking to you. They're so happy to be there, and I always feel like you get a real interview, you really actually get in and talk to these guys, which love. Well, thanks men. I enjoyed doing it and I really appreciate you guys saying that, thank you. Well, we've we've really enjoyed this series on the playoffs on the whole, and this is sort of the interesting thing, I'm not comparing it to the NBA playoffs. But the to go on at the same time, I don't think you would see in the NBA multiple eight seeds beating a one seed in the same playoffs. I mean, I isn't. mean, isn't that crazy that hockey can can produce that because we have something that the other sports don't have? It's called the goalie. Yeah, that's off the goalie gets infla-. Go be problems for the top seed. I've called a lot of one versus eight's in L. Never forget one. Montreal back in two thousand ten beat the presence trophy champions, Washington Capitals in seven game series and Yaroslava lock was a goalie for Montreal. And if he's not in goal, there's no way Montreal wins. But Montreal wanna game seven on the road was sixteen shots on net. You know, you can't make that up. That's unreal. Yeah. I think they were outshot forty two sixteen and they still won the game. So the goalie makes a massive difference in our sport in terms of upsets the king's head Jonathan quick. And also, you know, there is every team that has seemingly has a bad deal that they're able to overcome. I mean, as a Bruin San we've been lamenting gave it back a couple of years. So, you know, it's it's something that that, you know, it won't necessarily kill them. But I think if you're if. You definitely want to approach it cautiously, especially when the number is that high like, you I think a lot of teams can overcome a hit that's like between four and six billion on a bad deal. But if you're talking about trying to overcome, you know, they hit that it just like around the nine ten area. That's that's a lot more dicey. Given you know, the the way that the salary cap is structured, but you also have to consider the fact that the cap it is going to rise over the next. Yup. You know, however, many years so depending on how much that rises they it's easier berry bad contract. So you know, we'll see talking about your Bruins. You know, they've been they've been pretty ravaged with injuries early on here. So how you feel about the team, you know, they're gonna bring it together. Hopefully for the end of the season and get some health going for him. So especially with complying better, right? Yeah. I mean, I'm it's one of those situations where it's like they haven't blown me away. But you look at where they are right now. And you're there hanging in there. And they've been one of the most injury riddled teams in the league, and you know, in very important areas, you've lost char you've locked perjury. Argue block Charlie McEvoy you basically lost that entire defense at sections of the season. And there hasn't been a lot of production behind the top line. So for them to be where they are. Right now is is impressive. I'm still going to reserve judgment until they're they're completely healthy. And I see what they're able to bring as a full unit. Hopefully, they get there. I don't know. It seems like every time we get close. There's another big injury. So we'll see I think I do think that they are basically what I I I would expect them to be what I what I thought they were at the beginning of the year, which is probably like third best team. In that division pretty closely behind Toronto and and Tampa. But I don't know. We'll see I think that you'll obviously they've had some hard luck to start the year. But there are a lot of positives to take away as well. You know, given how well the first lines playing how. Well, the goaltending is how good their goal thing. Goaltending has been both into and yorislav lock who's been you know, basically a savior for the first couple of months of the season. He's been great. So a lot of positives. Take away you just hope they can get healthy rather than later sabres legend Yaroslava lock was traded here, and then immediately left and with with the Bruins to for from sabers fan perspective. That's a team that we sit back and watch from here and constantly think with ones that step back going to college we've been waiting for it to happen here. And it just seems teams were wondering when in the Hal Massachusetts teams are just going to just just crumble up. Up and dial ready, and it just seems that every year the Bruins figure out new ways with different players to to bring into their lineup and continue to be successful. I'll one last thing before we let you go Pete. I got a question for you. How much time per day. Do you spend on Twitter? Too much honestly too much, but I've got cetera about, you know, shutting it off and closing my eyes and and biting my tongue a little bit. When when I do too. And when I feel like I need a break like last night with the Tom Wilson stuff. I had to have Friday off. I had my Friday night. I saw the Tom and stuff happened. And I was like, you know, what I'll say that. I Saturday's morning, I'm gonna enjoy my Friday, and I I don't need this. I don't need people in my all myself. I spend too much time. But I'm trying to get better at it. That's a very mature decision of you. Thank you. It's incredibly very few. I hear I've ever made. That's exactly how I feel. And because I spend most of my breathing time. At least if not putting the takes on Twitter is sort of consuming, the takes that's a very reasonable response for you. And we appreciate your maturity in this matter Pete. But first foremost, thanks for joining us this afternoon. Might wish the Bruins luck and you love, but I don't really think they needed at this point. And I just would feel very dirty doing that. And I do have to face the people that are listening to this show. So I won't do that. But but Pete thanks for joining us. Hopefully, we'll get you on before the end of the season. And and hopefully, it's a situation where both the Bruins sabres are in the playoffs. Just hopefully not in the first round meeting. Hey, I'll I'll report honestly, I down. So thanks for having me. I appreciate it. All right p people Ackford they're on the west her hotline. You could follow his stuff in his work at CBS sports dot com. And he's also on Twitter, of course, and you could find him there. He also has a podcast at listen to brunch. Yes. That's right. So a lot of places to listen to the pizza eight oh three oh, five fifty one eight eight five fifty to five fifty. I think we should probably return back to some of the cream hunt. Talk. We had before the break. So if you guys want to call in if you've got takes or if you've got you wanna put your thoughts in about the cream hunt situation currently making headlines in the NFL. We'll take your calls and extra listening to sports talk Saturday WGN. This is Bill. Finally, got me Bill. What's that? Rick Clark street. Crater the mother of all pothole. Yeah. Year after rim wrecking year. It's tormented the people of this town they tried to fill it. But it always turns it Comey could, but you know, stay farms. Got you to you hear that trash talking to bottle? Yes. Yes. I am go with a win. That's here to help life go, right? State farm talk to an agent today when it comes to taking.

"Still out there for Colorado. Now get to Barry Barnes side now for Mika rant. And it puts a move on trying to go through chara gets behind it at Mika rant. And it keeps it himself nearside circle as it knocked away from him. He and can't get to it. And some back checking has to occur at center ice. Here comes Martin Santa with it. He's China's blocked by Tyson, Barrie rebounds. Steered aside by me, go Renton and now forgive landed. Scott has his pocket pick and here comes marchant. He lost a handle on it long before inside half wall. Now bad turnover in front of the net. It's off the bar. Threw it right in front of the net and Pasternak almost had his seventeen th goal of the season. That was a good thing for the Colorado Avalanche horrible mistake. Donncha bullet there puck bouncing inside their own zone. Trying to take advantage of a Boston change. Nathan MacKinnon throws the puck off the backboard behind Yaroslava on picked up on the Bruins man cave. Landis. Scott throwing it right in the slot. Nobody within ten feet of that pass pasternack hit the crossbar top of Semyon Varlamov. Arcing long near sign half. While now knocked out by Nordstrom loses possession. It's back to the point in John Moore, and they'll dump it down deep. Sam Gerard can't get to it goes all the way around but it's off of Boston lasts. No ising. Here will come out to play at once more. You're going to ruin stated pack as far sign working with Chris Wagner. He'll throw it on that same. How old is your water heater?.

"You know. So you wonder how much more you can get especially on that unit. That's been pretty well that game on Friday night, you know, going into it. He was third on the team tied with Tarasenko an assist, so we have seven assists. And that's what I'm talking about. You need them on the power play. Not just that body in front, but they have a set play that I think works so well in the number one unit Chris it goes down to the low boards. Pat, Meru gets it. He looks up top to find that that feed to a terrorist, Cinco ordinal Riley or a Bozic skating right into the slot. And that's why the power play has been so successful in don't overlook the fact that the first game he doesn't play the season. The blues went over four on the power play. This final thought Alex from you again, like you're going to need everyone. You're going to need to good goaltender this. What's the blues have had Chad Johnson has been good to Jake gallon. Another couple of days to practice and take arrested ride the hot hand. Why not? Yeah. I mean, why not you have to? I mean, look Mike ios rule in play with us. And he says after every game there's a shutout that goaltenders going back in don't call this a goalie controversy because it's not think back Brian Elliott, Jake, Allah when Yaroslava lock was here. And even Carter Hutton the backups are very successful. But it's not just the goaltender Chris. The defense is playing better in front of him. And that's why I think you've seen him give up only one goal on his last seventy plus shots that he seemed. So I think Jake is going to have an opportunity to get back in the guys are playing good in front of him. But here's the thing. Jake will have to find a way to stop the pucks that could force the momentum back on their side. And I think that's what Chad did. So well against the San Jose Sharks on Friday, high man appreciate it will catch back up with you in the intermission postgame. Sounds good. Chris italics Ferrario. Don't go anywhere. We're back in a moment. And we'll hear from the head coach Mike, yo as Chris Kerber visits with him. Blue wild coming up at the top of the hour. It say Sunday it's the final game of a seven game homestand in Saint Louis. Hockey. Are you looking to.
