Bolivia Prepares For Its Long-Awaited Presidential Election

"Olivia's presidential election is tomorrow on the atmosphere surrounding it may sound familiar fears of voter fraud, worries about violence and a deeply polarized country. As NPR's Philip Reefs reports. Lender. Yannis is getting ready for Bolivia's election day in the same way you prepare for an earthquake. She's stocking up. Ah, Rose can tell their soul guard. She says. She's bought lots of rice and sugar and plans to slaughter a cow to feed her three kids in case the shops ran out of meat. Yannis is in Bolivia's capital, La Paz. Talking to NPR from a gas station. She's lining up to buy emergency fuel supplies. Just in case there's violence and everything shuts down. People are desperate, says Yannis. They don't know what might happen in the next few days. Bolivians go to the polls tomorrow amid an unprecedented crisis, the pandemics causing havoc so our politics in my three decades of writing and studied Bolivia, I have never seen it. This polarized. Eduardo Gamarra is professor of politics at Florida International University in Miami. He's from Bolivia and believes the countries at a crossroads, its really going through a major transition to either a more stable Bolivia or an incredibly incredible Unstable set of years to come tomorrow says if the first round is tight, and there are allegations of fraud, it could be very dangerous, very, very dangerous because it's in fact, a repetition of last year's scenario he's talking about last November. That's when evil Morales was driven from power after 14 years. Morales was Bolivia's first indigenous president, a Socialist admired by leftists worldwide. He stepped down amid mass protests triggered by US supported allegations that he rigged last year's election. Morales was replaced by an unelected interim president, Jenny Anya's Ah, hardline conservative Christian Morale is his supporters took to the streets, accusing her of a coup. "We spent some time talking about the N ba. They've handed out their MVP award. Jonathan Poe. He won over LeBron James, who said he was pissed off that he did not win or not win, but that the voting It was 86 to 15 1st Place. Votes to Yannis. OK, LeBron only had 15 votes to Johannes is 86. So we took your phone calls, Got your thoughts? I'm not upset that Johannes got the award. Not you think about the M V P and what it's been for past 30 years. It's like OK, take the best team in the regular season. Take the best player on that team, and there you have it. The M V P has not always going to the best player. I'll talk to LeBron James about that. Or not, go talk to Michael Jordan about that. The best player doesn't always get the award in tonight and upset LeBron James helped lead The Los Angeles Lakers over the Denver Nuggets in Game one of the Western Conference finals. 1 26. So 1 14. And we just took your calls. Yeah, The Lakers are the favorites. Surprisingly, there's a couple of folks I mean, one guy said he thinks the Nuggets will Make this a seven game series someone. Oh, my God. What are we playing too? Okay, here. You think these air these players don't get tied? You don't think all of the games won't catch up? This is the real world here.

Pompeo: Chinese threat may be worse than a 'Cold War 2.0'

"US Secretary of state might compare has bill named middle of Oprah this week you warning that the threat from China good welby worse than that posed by the Soviet Union at the height of the cold. War Mr Pompeo's visits is taking in the Czech Republic Austria, Poland, and Slovenia. This is what he said yesterday. The contrast between free and unfree society has never been clear. Free nations must work together to confront authoritarian threats. Chief among those threats is the Chinese Communist Party and its drive to control people and information at our economies. When a Balkans correspondent guided Loni has been following his journey. Welcome back to the program guy good to have you with us. I wipe out the with Slovenia with no disrespect obviously to the nation itself. I think far enough I mean it's only two million people live here. So it's not exactly huge, but it is a NATO member and there is a family connection of course, Emma and Mr. Pompeo made that point in his opening remarks saying that he brought greetings for Melania trump who is noticeably absent from her homeland. She was born in San Nitsa as Melania canals and she doesn't come back here very often. But Mr Pompey's said she was very envious about him visiting nurse Levin in particular Lake bled where he was doing his news conference but. The rather factors as well. So Slovenia is at at the moment and this is I wouldn't say was out of character, but it's just a matter of where how the political winds blowing here at the moment at the moment in the Prime Minister's office you've got somebody who thinks Mr trump is rather smashing fallow where prime, minister. Yannis Yansha uses twitter almost as enthusiastically as MR trump and spends quite a lot of that time. Enthusiastically, retweeting Mr Trump's tweets. So if you're going to have a friendly audience in Europe at the moment of your representative of the trump administration then Slovenia's an office place to stop off so more than simply passing on greetings from floaters and enjoying a slap up lunch at Lake bled we've just heard there a clip from Secretary of State Pompeo. Making China the real focus of his visit. He really did, and you only speak for about three or four minutes yesterday bend and I think at least two and a half of those minutes were spent really having a good old dig on against China before that. He was speaking about well, he was actually signing a declaration with the Foreign Minister of Slovenia about five G. Security, and this is all part of pushing what the trump administration calls. They're clean network program, and this is an attack on Chinese. Telecom. Companies Chinese tech companies hallway in particular Zeti threatening for the Balkan they've both been very high profile targets of the trump administration and leave you signing up to this five of this clean network program. You'll basically making a commitment, you'll knocking to use any untrustworthy. Vendors in your five G. Systems and the United States is saying it wouldn't have any of these vendors anywhere near any of its embassies went allowed anywhere near any of this State Department. Systems. A lot of come countries, of course are not signing up to this, but Slovenia has and it's got its five G. Network installed by. As of last month, take that way well has replied China Chinese commentators of wounded central and eastern Europe shouldn't be fooled. What would describes Mike pompeo embracing an entirely entirely cold war mindset it is. It is a dangerous thing. Isn't it when you start going into the likes of the Czech, Republic and Poland and Slovenia, and START TALKING ABOUT IDEOLOGICAL THREATS Yes I'm you know he really has gone the full evil empire on? Am You when you talk about Cold War rhetoric either way that he's he's talking really as I mean, as you heard in the clip there, it sounds like something from the nineteen eighties a talks again chief among these threats as the. Chinese. Communist. Party. It's drive to control people and. Information and our economies, and it's it's again talking about freedom loving people and becoming a five G. Clean country as Slovenia has done today as solidifies staff position. In this fight, the tide is turning against the Chinese Communist Party in its efforts to restrict freedom for all of us and I think what's interesting guys of course he's not saying China he's specifically saying. The Chinese Communist, party so he's criticizing the the system of government and control rather than country and the people itself, and that's I suppose the GATT out card But this is the way that the trump administration is going I recommend everyone to have a a good read of the clean network program just to see what they're saying in that and. Quite apart from anything else it does make it clear and not that it's part of the trump administration's drive and it's very interesting phrasing not the United States, not the State Department but the trump administration. So a spot of electioneering perhaps

Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo suspended one game for headbutting Wizards' Moe Wagner

"Is playing the Milwaukee Bucks and you would say, Oh, yeah, Milwaukee should win that game. We don't know what the bucks they're gonna look like on the court. And how? How many minutes. Are those bucks Players going, Teo get Here's one thing, though, in a game last night were Yannis onto the Campo probably didn't need supply. He did play, so you would have wondered if Mike Budenholzer would've put onto the tempo out in the court tomorrow. Up against the Memphis Grizzlies. Now he doesn't have that option to do so, because you're honest onto the Campo got hit with a one game suspension for a foolish head. But last night On most Wagner and we've seen the honest answer component on the bubble, pick a fight with Dante Hall of the Nets, and then picked a fight with also Mo Wagner. And they were both unnecessary. Why are you doing that? Why you put in yourself in that situation? It's not like you're headbutting LeBron or CO I Leonard, your head butting two guys that Don't mean a damn thing to you, and both their team stink. So you're going to be a back to back M v p Award winner? Maybe trying to pick up the intensity in the bubble, which I could appreciate on DH. Maybe because you know, everyone's saying your season doesn't mean anything until yeah. Get to the embassy finals and really your season starts the postseason. Maybe you just get in and see that that's finally coming. But for Johannes last night, what he was doing was absolutely foolish, and I don't get it and even after the game He realized that it was a mistake and what he did. Terrible action. Um, never go back. Turn back time and club XL playing. I wouldn't do it. But then they know human making state's got out of

Look at this get strep throat. Right now what would you say about Rogan fucking said. WH- look guys say is when they read a book it used to be. You had to go through first of all you read a book. Publisher wants you to write a much longer book that you need to. That's the secret and publishing. It's gotta be three hundred pages. Just whatever for whatever reason so now you sell that book. Now you're going to book tour. You do one episode of Rogin. These people get their idea from that book across first of all. You don't really have to the book. Usually second of all more people hear about that book in ten years and in ten years well anybody's from Sam Harris errors to Neil degrasse Tyson. These Republicans that make their living selling books they do one episode of that was so did they sell more books from that three hours worse than they do in ten years. I mean I'm talking about I. Think with Sam Harris talking about. He's he sells you bestseller. He goes I can sell more books in you know in this three hours than I do. And how do you think it was created. What my present? It's not gonNA matter five months I don't give them more than five minutes. I'm going to ask some balls out. Pull amount yeah. It's not gonNA matter wherever you are there. You are exactly just you say friendly in your president and you do it. Yeah and you know I. It felt good. It felt good to breeze out my father before and it I just felt goods breeze it out there. Comedy central is not doing the second. I'm doing the second hour special filmed in June in Chicago and then and then and then I have an animation show in development. And listen when we're on I'm on phone calls with them now developing the show but I know how it goes down. I'm just you know I'm all about the PODCAST. And I got my my two feet in this new digital world. I absolutely want to get some comedy central. I love them but it's like whatever they want me to do. You know they're calling me they're like how do you feel about the subjective truth of your character. I'm like what do you want. Who who do you want me to voice to get his son Manashian transgender? What the fuck do you want to do? Just put on Aquafina do it. I don't give a fun to watch the show so just give me the money money into my pocket do you fuck cartoon. Can't slip because whatever the fuck you WANNA do. I'm doing the PODCAST. And that's where my ticket sales coming. I'm just trying to you know how many many people actually you would. I don't hear people talking about comedy. Central at all not just got a renewed for another twenty episodes. Yeah I think I got renewed. Yeah Hide Your special if you want to hide it. Networks ESPECI- Sean. They're out on the road. I wanted to see it and eared. Whatever on Friday night can't then I was like I'd my shows now he had done as I fuck? I'm looking. I can't find huge. Look it was one of those decisions when they came with me for with the deal. I got a daughter. I where I co parents aren't raising a family here. So I'm like I gotTa do this to make the the money but I'm aware like I promoted as much as I can but I'm I'm realistic. It's like nobody's really GonNa Watch it Friday at midnight but hopefully the digital get up even if it doesn't all I really care all I'm even thinking about Out from my specialist. I don't care about the Ark of the hour I mean. Even if it was on Netflix I mean who can even watch our anymore in this eight hundred twenty six. All I'm thinking about is comic comic. They cut off at twenty sixty minutes special just thinking about how many one minute instagram -able clips for two minutes three minutes TV clips. Can I have that. Those will get shared around but would it be smarter because we know according to net Flix stats that most people the watch the full hour but they don't do it in one sitting right. They cut off after twenty six minutes. So I was talking to Bert Kreischer about this. He goes they once they those analytics my closer I put at the front because I know him in the top because they're not a lot the much the majority of seventy percents not gonNA make it to my clothes. Sure hit him right in the fucking mouth at the front. Yeah it might go a little further. But either way they leave going Dan he was a beatty was great. Even though I only saw ten ten fifteen minutes of it but wouldn't be we know these analytics right. We know why are people doing shorter specials by thirty because I think it's condition thinking it's the same reason when you go to a comedy club and they're like you know giving check spots out when it's the only show the night or they're gonNA say the road. You're doing an hour because you have to write in an hour and fifteen whatever because that people come to see a show about that. Yeah so get a get a babysitter. Right they fucking go to dinner they pay for part you gotta give them what they're doing. You GotTa get our people. I'm staying with. Net flicks would comedy central. Show Tim if we know. The analytics are twenty seven minutes. Why the fuck is everybody doing now? Here's my question I don't know here's my if you did a half hour. Do you think people would turn off at fifteen minutes. Well they're doing that. The fifteen minutes comedy central's doing that but there's a short comedy central is doing. They're going to do ten minute. Bits killer ten minute it sets yeah. Netflix is doing thirty minutes special. Yes I've heard of twenty minutes specials people now they're opening up to it. I think for us it matters. Is that a lot of people. Watch it and so we can sell L. Tickets but here's the thing in we think about what shelties doing what a lot of doing is when you posted a clip. That six minutes long. Yeah that clip is going to sell more tickets for region. You're our hot absolutely because you may not need you ever feel like I was laughing at the way your girl talks all. Yeah my kid's mom. Yeah phenomenal Oh thank you take that and you post that. That's going to sell more. Of course our you may not need a fucking our for me. I I swear to God what I care about is selling as many takes. That's what I that's and that's why that's why we're all stuck in this. I got again our this place. This was this. By if fuel Chapelle or your rock. And you Rogin your burr and paper Tiger and they're painting forty million to produce that our already selling arenas and stadiums and you're Kevin Hart that make sense I just if you're these other great I don't know I I'm not saying the answers on it saying don't shoot hours. I'm not saying that at all I'm saying when I look at the analytics I don't know man. We agree it ironic. How like the Father Technologies? Come the more sort of come back full circle to the beginning like now the live performances. The special thing because it's so easy to see somebody on a screen anywhere anywhere. It's so common that like now. Talk Radio's back with podcast. And people want to get to know the personality they want because because everything's instant a. and like everything's on screen the podcast Rogan always says podcast. I don't know I'm just sweating. I'm GonNa tell you want me to tell you the I I'll do it. I guess I do now..

Hey Man it said you and I are represented comics now and I and I went. Yeah you know that unified bunch and he started laughing because when nobody was right but I will say Rogan took a dictator. I don't say Dick took up a fuck in team captain Grogan hold up. Nobody's GonNa be mean to these new comics. No it's they're our friends are here to do a job. He won't be fucking cool. Don't bump somebody for two hours now in New York. I've never done that doesn't happen here. You know we we know like in New York mccown guys but that was because the system was like there was only a couple of spots so everybody had to compete for those couple spots now. It's like speedboat air where you build your own boat out and just zipper Rogan's is obviously he's at his level so you're going to do the most successful successful guys. Doing his thing is be nice. There's room for everybody. Everybody trying to ruin falls. That are sh- affair when he left L. A.. WHO's a Tom? Door guy blew up as a comedian. He's so talented then went to New York and was like what are you guys doing. Each other now are is really people will think about New York guys who labor though right like faulk mashed here. There ain't no one even close. All the ship does for comics. I know all the whole comedy central show twelve out helping comics. Yeah he does so much stuff I know it's he launched all you know his his own network helps combat. I almost comedians in New York City. Now we know that you know or at least the ones that we hang take we get it like. We're like yeah of course but I don't think we're ever really liked that. Like we are late to the PODCAST I was. I don't think I don't never show you honest be mean to anyone. I have all my mother and father always like just treat everybody the same like I remember i. I had a manager when I first started. He liked treated this waitress like a fucking third classes. And I was like you're out. I don't care what you can get from. I don't want to be around that that's disgusting like I didn't learn that I grew up like that so so I think now it's trying to be. Hey let's all help each other because it's like I feel like in the New York like you said it's being cynical like even when Andrew. I started like Youtube. And all that. And he's fucking crushing and Yasa. This shelters great. We're like on team shells. Go get it when people really youtube. It's like yeah really youtube. That's the new fucking network. Like what are you worried about. CBS still nobody cares. Nobody cares nobody cares man you know the business has changed so yeah and people still don't get it. Yeah it's really interesting. Yeah but also shots during his also brave because he's putting content out there that he can't so he's posting content than that next city goes to he can't use that same shit he's supposed to new content on them. Anyone hang on keep up. Yeah tried. I tried hard is come up with new content. That you'RE GONNA post to sell tickets. You better be good every week. Every month. I in writing motherfuckers hanging off his scrotum absolutely yes. No do we know we can only see scholtz right now. Yeah Win Yeah I know all you guys are excited. We're trying the PODCAST. "Seven grand. I can't help what those mouthguard everything like. I'm not putting it in my mouth asleep monday. Still a mouthguard like pure it like you're just jan this plastic and sal no now. The giants leave avenue machine really is not an option but that's that's. That's i wouldn't use it. It's like having a retainer thing in every night. Get the fuck outta here. That's bad so how did you end up lincoln up with steph and all of those guys yes well distefano me and distefano <hes>. I knew i knew him. I've known him what i think. I started so i think he actually opened from new york from from new york from brooklyn so we kinda bonded on that orc and <hes> he was super funny super fast and he moved super-quick and then actually me and him where we really bonded was he was dating carly aquilino girl code. Yeah i was dating jesse may peluso and they were girl code. Well you guys so kodak kodak here. They became really good friends jesse carly and like some me and chris we knew each other we came even better friends and then jesse may broke up with me has her career one up and carly broke up with him when her career went up so we were just starting commiserating through like the to dump kids who have lesser careers than our girlfriends that was the beginning little thing that was such a brutal grow such hit tv vi and was like <hes> the guy code and girl code i remember the guy code was on m._t._v. to and grow coz on the actual m._t._v. and so more people just i just saw it was bigger than guy code and they got pretty big with a certain demographic or whatever and they did not. It's tough. I don't know if i if i could date like a female comedian. If you just want to keep her down here and it sounds it sounds just horribly insecure and pretty pretty lame but it's just like. I don't want to be funny. I mean like the point especially. I don't even want to date a girl who was like got funny jokes when she's hanging out let alone like john t._v. And more successful the in the career. I'm trying to do here. I can't have that. I learned my lesson. I would i would eat rewarding girls. Get over that yeah. My buddy bobby kelly says never dating with a headshot yeah. It's a good plan your plan. How do you get over that though chris. Oh like i'm picturing. You guys like you know you sitting around like in your underwear. Just sitting on the couch like girl are funnier than some. We're all now well yeah. It was rough because it was like the girl was on all the time you couldn't lady gaping on all the time and we had so many friends in common and stuff so i had to like do breaking up in this era. It's impossible. It's i cannot not get away yeah. We're i mean the amount like the the new person you can talk to the old person you wear then. Everybody's seeing each other or no. There's no way to break away. You could the following day. It's not the only ways to like yeah like move to a country that doesn't have wifi or the internet. Honestly someone's gonna tag a photo and so like i had to unfriendly her. Her france heartbroken me so unfrosted. People who were friends with people got fucking. There's a lot of dan yes probably is perceived as petty or some shit. It's like oh. I thought we were cool and it's like we were but i i. I can't do this broken you. I feel like if you break up the modern era. You need a new identity. You need the walter white vacuum repairman. Give me like a new passport new fucking new place to live otherwise you never going to escape it like like like my dad broke up with people like the movie the movie street over john it was it never see again. I also bar and you're good these happens with cheating and people like it did in the ninety. S aren't songs about how you left. Someone's phone number in your pocket not get caught cheating. That's the only thing to worry about. Okay throw away this fucking napkin with lipstick on it they say where were you tonight and you just say somewhere else say different place. Who were you with yachats yeah. Okay okay. That's it. There's no fucking. I saw video you here in a time stamp tweet there and all that shit yeah. She's like through. You're like no you proven innocent until remember about murders to take back in the day in order to get call for murder you had to have someone sees a murder and it had to be someone who like it was a good standing. You can still go. He saw it didn't happen. Yeah wasn't ally now. I saw him. It's like i didn't see him right like now. You cannot if you're in the room. You're going to get caught thought right like somehow some follicle fiber hair kill like they know who you shit man. You can't murder anybody. I feel like but i could you murder like a homeless person right now. Get away with it. No you don't think so. I think that just a cameras everywhere like i went into the parking. Kill somebody there's just like those nine eleven cameras everywhere yeah and just like like a fiber or something like that. That's i'm not in the system like my fibers aren't going to do anything the only way you might get away with this white yeah so they may not look for you at all they may but you know what this is another senseless homeless on homeless killing you got so many of those you got a dad you can refer to his father in the third person. You could get away with you like i want to introduce you to my father. He could wherever you want. I was thinking about that was watching minehunter and they have in the new season. They're trying the catch. The atlanta child murders which i didn't even know about that. I don't know it'd be someone twenty nine children in atlanta how what when when when eighty one or seven nine seventy nine to eighty one but they're like trying to catch them and there's like trying to guess where he would throw the body have cops stationed around the lakes like waiting waiting for it every night. He didn't come by throws the body tonight follow splash like that's the only way they can catch now. It's like you know exactly you find find a fog. Go find this. Do hope we fucking are sitting at the bridge. He's gonna mirrors while we're watching yeah hope he goes. Hey come over here. I'm gonna murder this person and that's like nineteen eighty-one seventeen fifty you can kill wherever the fuck you want mashed rock rock in the head and that's it. They're so good at catching people now. They've caught jack jack the ripper now right. They figured out years land. It's nuts. That is some crazy shit. You can't get away with anything then you can't. I i start start thinking about the murder stuff and it gets dark quick. What do you mean just like how i would do it and how to get rid of the body and you went to a different place. Their house has learned. They're going you know what i like. A challenge would be bad at it. Shame on science off figuring out. Make you look like a fucking accident and so <hes> schultz is the producer of the show and you kind of mentioned how he's talking about the strategy behind putting it out and whatnot is that what that entails though like you know the material and all that shit is you know your own and just because i was just interested in in that whole process of like produced by and it's just like that fucking guy it actually really speaks to the era or because like i've been around a while. I'm a little older than those guys so i started a little before schultz and chris and i had like the success of the characters and stuff so i i know the comic con. We're all like even those guys are a little younger. You know we're we grew up in the same kind of era where the internet was the thing doesn't even really matter a lot of regards. It's like we're all covering the same cloth off. You guys are covering the same cloth. You're doing the same thing yeah so but just as far as like the new world like yeah digital world. I was at the beginning of like hey you do it. This way and those guys is it right now. In the peak of it like like this all is in barstool and everything and so by bill burr is producing a couple of specials on comedy central so he wanted to produce mine so i was going to do it that way i was going to he did just as you did in edwards did paul verses and so he was going to produce mine and dan and i was like you know what i don't wanna wait for that like i just don't and then i saw chris come out i saw paul's come out and like they did okay but then like you can't find him after that you gotta we're like comedy. Central's app just can't find him there there. The air wants and they disappear and not a lotta doesn't get a lot of eyeballs on it all the stuff. We're talking about so i just i and had dinner with schultz when i told him that and i was like but you know what i kind of just want to do it and put it out and he was like let me do it. Let me produce it and i was like all right and that's what we thought of the concept. They're they're like hey. Let's do it at the club trying to choose something you come through and you just decide to shoot it so it's like impromptu michou my special tonight and so we just did it a new york comedy club and you know it was his production team and he produced directed it looks real cool looks real greedy and and that's what it was blowing the light so it's like i'm going along side. Yeah i mean the the trailer for is very cool decided to do it. I was like let's do it. This way and i mean smarter joined the digital basically digital approach i. I said he was like hey man. He was like yeah. Don't let me he was like your times now to do this. Special materials ready just do it like dome. Don't worry about it. I mean even the fact that you could have gone. The bill. Burr route has got to be a pretty like pretty cool. I actually would be nervous to turn it down. Even everything you said made made sense but i'd be like i can't. You're right bill burr. That's twi asked him i. I just wanted to speak to him first because he what he said he wanted to produce special. I spoke to him first and he was even like he's because even he gets it..

"Dot com slash k._f._c. code k._f._c. a._m._c. Let's get into these waste mess so in love it <hes> i've recently had a streak of some awful i states but the topic it came up with my friends. How much would it cost for you to baby talk on the very first state <hes> said it really depends on how hot the girl is has but actually gonna do it for two hundred bucks next week. <hes> let me know what you'll think if i should have gotten it for more money or even you too must anyway. Thank a couple of things going on here okay. Do we missed the first half. I think he just he's been doing a lot online dating okay because i think that matters i think your financial situation matters. I mean there's a time john when you're when you're eating tomato soup with a slice of crap singles on top. If i told you two hundred bucks to do talk funny to girl. I think you would do it like general right so let me line this up. Fucking get rich tunnel right. There are people blue far more for far less. Suck a dick for fifty bucks for two hundred bucks. I would just have thirty days ready to go one night. I'd sit down and these we walk out so that was my other part of it your financial situation one number two. What are we qualifying as like baby. Talk you know had had to be like some true. Goo gaga shit or you know kind of just kind of be like pet names and like cutesy stuff. Also what's really the problem the the ultimate thing. Here's what the girl thinks. You're an asshole. If you're doing online the whole time i guess so. I think it was crazy. That wouldn't happen. It'd be like leaving the steph like baby talk for two sentences. Yes maybe like realistically like what if at the end of the night like you have a good date and at the end you're like you know you walk out the door and you're just like joe to be. I wanna see you tomorrow next day and the next day. Can i give you as mu bucci chee torpedo yourself. Let's say it's a very because i don't really quite understand the punishment if you will like okay so this girl hates you on tinder tate like next next. Let's say it's a date. That goes really well. It's a pretty girl and everything but you are obligated to do what i just did. Smooch movie will be like. I'm i'm gonna eskimo. Kiss you and like book like i'm going to poke you. In the nose like i will find you like that. You know that and they've been well twelve. You had a lot in common with her and all that stuff. I would think you share a sense of humor and i think that burning the spin zone here is like that tornado that was off the coast of fire island. You're sorry about that that was i had my friends. It was like oh no no doubt it. You're not allowed to that's a that's a loophole. I'm not going to allow be if movies and anything has ever taught me anything. Girls will react to things like this. I feel like it half the movies. I would be like listen. It started out as a bet but now i really really love you so i just get over it. You know what i mean rank by. I'm not exactly i did. It was a joke that i was gonna fall in love with you but i really did so. Let's just keep it moving but girls are like you lied to me and then it's over so you can't tell her that's not lying. You're right but that's not lying to him. That's just like i. I seriously seriously did that now. I wasn't asshole now. I'm not i think he likes it because you are ugly and then you did take you down your hair and take off your glasses and you became hot so i was duped if anyone was lying it. Was you ugly bitch. No you can't tell her and all she knows. Is that like i had a good day with this guy but he turned out to be a baby talk weirdo and you probably did lower i c. I can't right but but okay but for two hundred bucks all right. That's not gonna work. I guess the question would be what do you value more like the potential for this date and this girl to it deletes is something more or two hundred bucks two hundred bucks. I mean so it's only three things what's your financial situation. What are we considering babytalk and what what's your romantic situations. You come out on that relationship up two hundred bucks name another relationship that you come out ahead. Yeah this relationship would end. We'll end. Maybe it'll be a couple years from now with great moments and experiences in between but i'm going to come out with like i'm gonna come out in the red big time so much money on you and i'll be emotionally invested in you instead. Let's just call it a day. Now and i'll get two hundred bucks in my bike's. That's that's pretty great. Also i mean what if i was warren buffett and you came to me with that business plan that's great. That's a good financial return on investments crazy. It was fantastic. I guess you gotta pay for the date. Maybe it's not that good. I think you the you had to pay two hundred dollars profit and i guess what you had to film this because winches go home and i did it yeah. I should give me that fucking money. You'd up to at least say. Call them in the pocket beforehand that you ever do. You've talked to ever do baby talk to you. Have you ever been the girl who does it. Have you ever like had that. Be a part of your. I did not know it was like a thing yeah. Why do kind of think. It's one of those like movie things where it's like. Does anybody actually say schmo even these. I don't even really see it. No i'm only seinfeld episode seinfield episode occur and uh crashes where it's like crazy people yeah yeah. I mean girls out. Ah i know i remember i was in my sophomore year of college and i had a girlfriend and i had blown her off. We had that we were supposed to go on a date to like a broadway show and it was game seven of reverse sweep year so i pulled off oh she's like we're not going to that and then i went out and got shit faced and such began the trend that i am still on about fifteen years later. I'm just not going to text you or or check in with you at all when i should be doing so. I just don't do that. I don't know what it is. It's not it's not even like i was out like cheating. It was just like i just i'm drinking with buddies and i don't want to ask you right now. It's not gonna do that started in two thousand four but so later that night when the night was over. I like finally pick up. The phone and i didn't even do baby talk but i was just like oh babe. I'm sorry that was so stupid of me. I'm really sorry i'll make it wasn't just me talking in a very like and my roommate at the time paul paul you know him he was like what are you some sort of fucking off on me and i was like i was just saying i'm sorry to her are like what i didn't even think it was that bad man u's went in on me and i was like oh man i fucking loser and then quickly like not awkward. I guess two years later. I realized oh no. You're you're the weird one. When it comes to their shit i was just saying i'm sorry this up well. Do you have a girlfriend that you apologized to fucking fucking loser wear pants. Pussies are the ring by a girl. I do believe he says shave your legs or something stupid. Take that and i remember i was young and dumb like oh man. I guess i really am walking like we're doing wrong. It'd be tough and cool so that was. I've never done like the. I'll i'll do pet names and stuff like that for sure but i think it's about the boys names yeah but i don't think i come to the pet name but there's the generic ones you know what i mean. I feel like okay do babe. I'll say boo but that's almost like you say you joe. What's up. Oh you know what i mean. Okay what's up abe <hes>. What else would i say. I also really say so. Don't say might text. I don't say it yeah. I guess be booed. Really beulah say they personalized big names personally. Love your garbage what personalized nickname by personalized baby names personalized vows house like your garbage garbage. Was the name sub garbage. That would a lot if you do that. I'm <hes> like a totally made up word yeah. I don't know i've even count muffin or something like that. Those are so stupid but yeah. I'd like totally made up or just like very personal if it's like a sign if it was like he's honeybunch baby cupcake or some shit like and they say that's your name. Almost that's where it gets weird. I'll throw out like a nickname but it's not a tailored babytalk conversation. No i think that does happen more than when you think i think there are some fucking girls i heard about it like enforce that i haven't haven't run into it in the wild yet next up if the fight b._c. What's good <hes>. I left a voicemail last october in the fall season about <hes> if you've ever the head research teeth is smaller too big question that you had a date with a girl a blind date before. Do you have a go-to outfit or oh. You're going with something you'd never worn before. I love to know because i got my gametime boxers. I got my game time pants. I think shirt wise something in the air but curious. Could you guys have a game tying up. I'll naturally defer to you on this one. John absolutely not you gotta. Let fly of course we that's crazy. It's like it's like why why i packed like five bags. Whenever i go anywhere because feel at the moment right like you can't plan your outfits planning your up. It is crazy. That's that's some sixty year roadman ship where versatility like look like who knows where it's going to be who knows what the weather's going to be what you guys just fucking anywhere rare but let's say you know it's the weather's good you know the girl ahead of time already and you have decided that you're taking her to like the restaurant that you like like you know. You're doing the date that like you do i. It's it's like an art. It's there's so much motion based on what you're gonna wear. How oh you're feeling in the moment oh my god is homeless and put like a very simple. I plan my outfit with him in the shower every day. I've i've josh not shampoo my hair but i'm going all right..

"To i'm very happy campers because fuck summer the summer's officially fucking over thank god out. Fuck walk you summer. I hope you never come back. Hope summer never comes again. I hope you reach the point where climate change has fully changed. All the season's summer doesn't even exist any summers like you'll cousin that you didn't even like hung out together yeah. We're older now yeah yeah. Let's not let's not do this perfect description because you know what you do with your cousin. That causes played in the pool and you played sports. You went to like the museum park. Maybe you did all the summertime things with them. That show was great when you're eight years old nine years old. You're an adult and you're like. I don't even and fucking. I don't even remember your name. There's no time bother me. You just ruin the mood you make me uncomfortable. As you're at adult the summer become like that cousin inviting you to his wedding. Do not like a an annoying thing for me to have to deal with no shot that causes seem cousin. You get nothing but happy birthday tax. It's like have you. Have you have your birthday dude. Have you heard that goes for like two straight years. It's like listen. We don't even need to hang out anymore. It's just not like once used to be. There's nothing nothing worse in life than trying to recapture old fun. You can't do you try to recapture a party or of vacation or a moment or you start to go to an old bar you are and you're just like this is not the same man and then that bar what used to be really fun. Actually that bar kinda like sucks now. It's like dirty and gross and the people saw this is is no good or he tried to get to that party trying to drink the old drinks. It's like who's fucking cake stan drake hypnotic or some stupid like wait a minute. This is awful. I hate this. The crowd like i can't believe i'm doing this. That's summer. I can't believe i'm doing this again if i had that. It was actually had a great weekend. 'cause i didn't do anything summer. You say the couch all weekend. I watched tuesday's breaking bad this weekend for that movie. I'll start shows where i'm like. Oh oh i got to finish it by this date and i started in advance. You blow a week and i don't know why did november yeah well people. I think just like a week ago. People said they did like the clem starting now. If you watch one episode per night you could fuck on episode clemes sticking to that was one of the most impressive things i've ever seen him. I bet clendenin clendenin stick to that. I've ever watched a couple of tweeted one. I've done that ship before i've lied and every you lied about watching shows to eight preposterous outrageous extent like to a sociopathic pathological extent good to sit there and watch it again six hours later. I haven't seen this yet and sons of anarchy no less or it's just like okay now. I have to watch jax teller like have a machine gun fight in the middle of the town again but i did it but so yesterday i i was. I a great weekend. I got a little sick which wasn't great but whatever the fuck no. It's not worth complaining about just acknowledge. I'm hot. I'm really i'm like i'm like clammy all salt. He's over there shaking his head because it's got sick. 'cause i mean my off over here. On vomiting all over the nipple kinda ruined the family guy going everyone throwing up on top of all absolutely not sick yeah. This have the precursor to be. Which is the worst because tough you know like fuck. Tomorrow is gonna get your shit done now because come tomorrow the a but but yeah it's point but anyway so as i was coming home on train yesterday after have a great weekend of doing nothing summer related. I was surrounded by people who were trying to keep going on the train. Yeah not like much partying partying but just they were happy and there's nothing worse because i was sick. I wasn't like depressed. I wasn't feeling great right and there's nothing worse than being around people who are happy when you're not a company. It's even worse than being this person in the drunk crowd. It's worse than being the house. It's not like the apartment. That's not partying when they next door. They are it just like fuck you guys again. It's it's not that i i want the smile. It's i want you to france. I don't wanna share you share again. It wasn't like a pressure that he was just not feeling good. I just want peace and quiet right now. I don't want the mets to win. Everyone else to lose. Misery truly loves company. Would i found out though while that was all happening. Is that when i'm annoyed i guess or not feeling well. Perspectives on China and global power

"How will the struggle for power between China and the US play out. And how will it determine the future world order, Fred Stedman, put this question to China expert, Ron meter he was reviewed a series of books looking at the issue from different perspectives. Ron, thanks for coming in. You looked at a number of books for us in a book Sesay about China and the west. And what struck me right? From the get-go was that you talked about this interaction between these great powers, China and the west, the US is being almost unique in its complexity, and I thought, why is that? Why is this more complicated than other great power interactions, that we've witnessed over the centuries? I think it is different. And the reason fundamentally is that we've never seen an engagement between two different types of regime that are so closely intertwined so different in terms of their values. So if you think back to the Cold War, we had at that time, basically, to political and economic systems, which were fiercely opposed to each other, but they didn't actually connect all that much. Of course, we were all terrified at the threat of nuclear war, but the Soviet Union's economy was not a major factor for the west and vice versa that AKU. It's not remotely true for the People's Republic of China. It is the second biggest economy in the world. It is now a primary economic actor in pretty much every single continent of the world and the United States. Of course, in China have been entwined in terms of finance for more than twenty years, more like thirty. Really? So the fact that we now have a rising China, which from the point of view of many liberals in the west but elsewhere has variety values particularly, of course and authoritarian type of government that is very different from what a liberal government would put forward, but it's not a place that we can simply close off or ignore that provides dilemma that was still right in the middle of solving on both sides, and one of the aspects of that. I think I'm right and say you say there's a choice there. Do we engage more with China and we're seeing this stuff that's happening in the world of technology while way, and whether it should be allowed to be part of the five G project or do we push back and one comes with a security risk? And the other one comes up tension financial economic risk that. That's lemon. But let me give you a specific example. Let's take away, which, of course, it's become this company that in the UK where we're sitting. Now, nobody had heard of probably not nobody very few people a year ago. Now, of course, is a headline every single morning on the news usually pronounced in a variety of other creative ways Hawaii audit wrong is not an upset. Right. I've heard is one prominent politician refers to it as Hawaii, which is not quite the same thing. I think that's not so much of an issue. So ten twenty years ago, we might have said that the biggest threat from the Chinese technology sector was that they were basically borrowing without commissioners, the polite way to put it intellectual property from the western world from the US from Britain from Europe Chinese would basically, taking technology that they hadn't paid for an putting into their machines had to be stopped. That is no longer the main problem does exist. But the wider problem is that actually China is now producing its indigenous technology to a very very high standard. So the reason that the United Kingdom, for instance is having a debate about whether or not, they put while way equipment in the five G network is nothing. With intellectual property theft. It's the fact that the cheapest highest quality most effective broadband network. You can have is made by hallway, and if you don't have that, then you're basically saying that you have to give an alternative company, the rights to put in the network that may actually not be at the moment, overs, higher quality. So there's a genuine balance between quality. And as you say, the question, whether there's a security risk or not, that's a new dilemma, not just for the UK but for the entire liberal world fascinating, I wanna come onto the books now because we get a perspective from China. So it's a bit more about a few from Beijing in terms of how these relationships are going to develop, what China sees its role and the other they have different conceptions of types of political systems, one of the books. I've reviewed in this particular China books essay is book leadership in the great powers by yen Shu at home. Professor yen is a very senior scholar in China. He's at Ching-ho university, one of the top institutions in that country. And he's become known. I'd say of the last. Twenty years or more in that particular field as probably one of the three or four best known most respected analysts of China's international relations. Now international relations terms without getting too technical. He's what's known as a realist is the accusation that sometimes put Henry Kissinger, Henry Kissinger, his pushes back and says, he's an idealist in realists, clothing, or was that effect. In other words, what professor yen believes is that power is the thing that actually makes a difference. So that's the position he's always had. That's why this book is so interesting, not just about him, but about China, because it makes actually in some ways rather, different case, a case that, if China is going to take fullest vantage of its rise in the world. The fact that it is now the second biggest economy in the world, and may by GDP be the biggest one within ten years. The fact that it is this huge international actor than it has to change the way, that looks the world, not just talk about power relationships, but also about what you might call the human relations, the narrative, that surround saddened, professor Yannis jesting that it will be time, maybe not yet but. Quite soon for what he calls, a more humane, the what he used the humane view of how China should relate to the rest of the world. Now that is in a sense, part of a process that we've also seen earlier with the most recent hegemony in world politics, the United States, which of course, became a power that had more battleships and more fighter planes, than anyone else particular during World War Two, but really seduce the world through what's become known as soft power. In other words, having a story to tell the world, I read professor Jens Booker saying that China has got the military. It's got the realist power. Now, it has to find the story and does he believe the Chinese leadership is current inclination to they buy that will this is one of the things that you have to read quite carefully in the book. It's not I would say a book to necessarily put next to a thriller at an airport. You know, it does take a bit of time. But I'd say get a glass of wine, give it a good going over, because it's well worth it prevents. The end doesn't at any point in the book talk about the current leadership, so Xi Jinping. The current president of China is not mentioned for Donald Trump is Donald Trump is along. With a few other names. So the United States certainly comes into the line of fire, you might say, but the wider question that he also is one that is very relevant China, which is, is the current system that China's operating, which, as we know is one that has been economically, very, very effective in terms of growth rates in terms of creating a kind of middle class, that's now, see very, very powerful in China and creating a sorta prosperous lifestyle that many consumers in China very much enjoy, but also really closing down political discourse. Is that going to be the way in which trying to get to the next stage in the implication? It's an implication of a statement but it isn't implication, is that maybe China's going to have to go beyond that if one looks at conclusions that he comes through. And again, this is very interesting because it is so much view from Beijing from thinker who is well respected both in the western China in that field, is that there's not going to be a war. This is not a story about a confrontation between China and America on the military front. But the is going to be a sort of battle for ideas and the dominance. Spouts largely economic in the Asia Pacific region. He does say very firmly the Asia Pacific region is where you're going to have to look, if you want to see what comes next for world politics. It's moving away from Europe moving away from North America. The Pacific for yen is where it's at right. Which is also the subject of one of the other books, that you looked up as referrals, China and Japan which comes to some interesting conclusions. I think it's fair to say it makes some interesting observations. It absolutely does Ezra Vogel is a scholar, but also a diplomatic figure who has actually sort of seen the rise and change in America's relationship with Asia, over the decades, he served in the Clinton administration, as secretary of state, and he became very famous in the seventies earliest that with the book who Japan as number one, which was on every business leaders bookshelf, as well as the cost many scholars, but he's always been a speaker both Chinese and Japanese and this book is about China and Japan, their shed history, which he points out, actually is not always as confrontational as it sometimes appears. We tend to think, of course of. The second World War when the two countries did have a massive conflict, of course. But he also points out that, for instance, if you look at statistics in the last few years, a few years ago, when tensions were pretty high between the two countries something like a million million a half Chinese visited Japan pass, not that many that number last year two thousand eighteen is more like eight million. So if you look below some of these surface rhetoric is saying, actually, there is a more cooperative story about economics about tourism about cultural values that are shared the maybe means the countries aren't as far apart as they might be. And this is I think, part of the white of Vogel, viewpoint because he comes from that generation of Americans who sought as part of their duty. I think in the post World War Two era to try and create a sort of agreed shed set of values in a stable community in East Asia America course, encouraged that in Europe, very successfully European Union NATO and so forth. It's never quite worked out in the same way in Asia. But that hasn't stopped a lot of those people actually, I think trying over and over again to create that similar sorts. Of stability for go. Yours decided mentioned former administration official, but other American voices take sort of more by guessing old money once say hawkish view new picked up on one someone. I believe you're actually at one point taught Jonathan ward who's written a book China's vision of victory which sounds alarmist oil is very concerned, and feels the American needs to be much more assertive in its response. That's right. Yes. New Jonathan ward. I taught history when he was an Oxford where I teach. But this book is very much about current affairs, and it's very much about policy not about history as such. And yes, I think it's fair to say that the argument he puts forward in the book is one that says that China is used the phrase hawkish, I'll say, clear and present danger, that's probably the phrase that comes to my mind. When reading it now, should say the book is one that has a great deal of information in it. It's got a lot about military power, and how China's building up its navy in particular. It's got a lot about economic power, and also of course a lot about values and the argument there, essentially is that. The United States, whether it wants to or not is going to have to deal with the fact that China is there to challenge the United States. So in a sense, that's a different story from the end should tone story where he's basically saying look the Americans and the Chinese are both going to be in the Pacific, where they're going to have to engage with each other. What story will, maybe it's time for America to actually set down the red lines if you can set down the red line in the Pacific Ocean. And actually say thus far and no further so between them those books actually point out in some ways, where the difference of view comes in terms of what's going to happen in the next decade in that Asia Pacific region. You mentioned around all the books that sort of sense that there are tensions, there is a competition of ideas, but the, the authors dancing, we're heading towards some military confrontation. And that things will be settled through dialogue to share that. I think you can see a generational difference in these books, which was as I say, in the essay, it's was reading them in tandem, because they all say something slightly different than they make up out of the picture for. Yang Tong speaking from Beijing. But, you know, with I think quite measured frame of mind. The argument is about to powers that have to live with each other, which have the potential to be confrontational, but not necessarily military sense. Maybe more on the economic sense. I think it's fair to say that as revivals book is talking about the areas where you can find agreement rather than disagreement between the actors and that in a sense, reflects his long decades of experience in the region. Jonathan ward is of a different generation. He's in his thirties. He's living, right there in the policy world of Washington DC right now, and the world, he sees is a much more confrontational. One, one in which America and China have different goals, different values different viewpoints. And that maybe just maybe those can't be contained together. Now, we're going to have to see what happens to work out in say the trade war between China and the US whether that actually could reach something more like a confrontation, but reading three books makes you realize that actually all of these viewpoints exist simultaneously. In part of the existential struggle almost is about what? Which one of them is going to prevail. Ron amid. Thank you very much. Thank you for it. That was Fred Stephen F teabags editor talking to Ron Mischer director of the Oxford University, China center. Thanks for listening.
