"To talk about how tough it is being in the opposition in Russia. As of course, Alexei Navalny would attest from jail where he allowed to talk to us. He and his party have been advocating something called smart voting in order to damage President Putin's United Russia party in the forthcoming elections, which are due In a couple of weeks time. But now Russian courts have told search engines like Google and Yandex to stop displaying the words. Smart voting. Mikhail Fishman is well known independent journalist in Moscow. Pleased to say he joins us now. Thanks for coming on the show, Mikhail first off, just explain to our listeners a little bit about smart voting. I mean, this was a big hope of the opposition Briefly. What was the idea it was making sure that opposition candidates didn't run against one another. Yes. Hi. Hi. Thank you for having yes. What is my voting? It's my thought Ng is basically strategy which aims, uh, to challenge the outcome of the election even when it is totally under control of the government and and from which any competitive competitiveness has been eliminated. Which is, of course, the Russian the Russian case. Yes. And has it been successful? I mean, have there been moments when it has actually threatened? Huge dominance of Putin's party. Yes, it has two years ago, Uh, at the election of Moscow cities Moscow City Council. It proved that it is indeed the only threat to the outcome of the election. And it, um, actually managed to, uh, shaken to shake the Commons. Pakistan, right? So, so that's why they're taking this latest move. Tell us about this latest move, because this is actually something To do with copyright. I understand so Google and so on, won't be able to what can't they do? They can still return smart voting as a search. But what exactly has happened with this? It's nothing happened yet, except for the court ruling, which which is very unclear, and it's not clear if this kind of ruling can have any legal standard. All Yandex search engine has already appealed against This court court ruling for now, it all works. If you google or Yandex smart voting, it will display the results. Of course. Uh, the, uh, the The ruling comes from the Pursuing from wool processing firm which by the initiative of the Kremlin, reduced the train trademark of smart boating. And you have to, uh, to see that it's not a coincidence that that's a wool processing firm the Kremlin is marking at the opposition at novel is supporting supporters not only repressing them, not only harassing them, but also mocking at them joking. So this is what what? What's the joke about will processing. I? I don't get it. We treat you as dump sheep. That's the message. Wow. I've got to say they are clever. Let's talk about others. So so listen, So this is still being contested. They think in the court that might be an appeal. Let's talk a little bit. I don't see how it might work, actually. Okay. Kind of this kind of kind of ruling. Okay, just doesn't have in years. It certainly gives a message, though, doesn't it? We're treating you all the sheep. Um, let's talk about the ways that the government is making it hard for opposition, because another thing that I've seen is, for example, I'm reading about this. This candidate in ST Petersburg, who is called Boris Vishnevsky. He's a senior member of the Liberal Party. So broadly speaking, sort of not of the Putin Party and all of a sudden he's running against. Three other Boris Vishnevsky is all apparently look like him. Um, is this usual to others to other but did not, uh, this is, uh Not very usual. This is was a common usual story in the nineties. But, uh, that was a totally different climate where the competitiveness was very high. And now it just looks as uh, as some kind of Kafka theater or something like something like that. Yes, Vishnevsky is known for him that he is not loyal because even in their position there are loyal, um candidates and not loyal. He's known known very Well, he's from ST Petersburg, and he's still got to be got his registration so they couldn't get him off the election. So they produced these two doppelgangers against him, which who look exactly like, but they do they've They've got the same sort of receding hairline. They've got the same kind of beard and, uh, Absolutely absolutely And and the thing is that it works because you're at this election election. It happens quite often, like in Moscow. In one of the districts, you have double Ganga over another quite well known communist Who is not this communist, but, uh, at the polls. He's already almost winning this election. But he's a no one. So the wrong one is winning. Because the wrong one. Yes, people can't tell the difference because he's got the same name. Yes, just because of his his name. Exactly Right. Okay, that two people mind that this sort of stuff is going on. I mean, obviously, Boris Vishnevsky does. But there he is. He's the only one wearing a tie. That's the only way I can tell him for me. They all look the same. Yes, Yes, yes. Sister. This is good. This is this is correct. Do the people minded some Petersburg? I honestly don't know. I don't know what in his district what people think. And what the polls standard. And what? What are the numbers? And what Actually the voters in this they think about what is going on. Do they actually pay pay? Pay attention. Michaela, Listen, Thank you. It is quite remarkable story. So there you are. Smart voting and Clever election nearing as well. An inverted commerce Thank you very much indeed. Independent journalist in Moscow, Mikhail Fishman, Um, if you want a bit of a laugh, dude, do just if you can't just do a little search on Boris Vishnevsky and and have a look at the poll card. Because you cannot tell them apart. One is slightly thinner than the others. But they're all Boris Vishnevsky. It would. It would confuse me if I was a voter.
