"We're talking contracts. You know what that means, Alex. We got to bring up the number one story in Red Sox land over the weekend, June Lee reported this for ESPN dot com. Right around opening day actually right on opening day. Last week, and that was the fact that apparently Xander Bogart's not pleased with the Red Sox and he is looking for elite shortstop money and the Red Sox priority is Rafael Devers. None of that surprises me. Not anything that I just uttered in that sentence surprises me. You. No, no. Look, I think that they should try to bring back both if you have to pick one. It's diverse. It's obvious. Yes, I don't think that's any question. So I think Trevor story signing was the writing on the wall. Again, it would have been cool to have all three. You add casses to that. You might get the best offensive infield and baseball for four or 5 years, whatever it may be. We talked about this last time I was on. I think they should be able to sign both. There's no other big contracts on the horizon. The cassus might be the next one. And at that point, Bogart still might be over. But if they have to prioritize one, it's never. That being said, they have to sign Raphael Devers. If they're going to let zander Bogart walk, you can't lose both. No. And Rafael Devers is off to the kind of start that Red Sox fans would like to see one home run. He's got two doubles, 5 hits overall. In 16 at bats, he's hitting three 13. His OPS is 9 78 through four games, whatever that means. But I don't think there's going to be any slowing down. One thing I did notice, and we saw it on Monday again, Raphael Devers has some range now, especially to his left. And that play he made in the middle part of the game on Monday was very, very impressive. And if he can make those plays, then absolutely, he gets his wish of wanting.

"Great. We'll see what Joey Gallo is. So I think that they kind of remind me of the Red Sox where the potential is there. It's just, I don't know if they can do it consistently enough. The scary thing for me is if they are going to win, they're going to win hitting the baseball, right? Because where those guys are on Gallo, Rizzo. Yeah, go on. They can get stand judge. Thank you, dawn. The Jays, obviously, they can hit the crap out of the ball too. The Red Sox are designed to win games 11 to 8. And in a division full of teams that are also trying to win shootouts, I can get a little rough and the Red Sox probably have the worst bullpen of the three teams. That is the one thing I'd say the Yankees have definitively over the Red Sox. They have a good question. And that was the irony of Sunday Night is the Red Sox bullpen outperformed the Yankee bullpen. Not by a lot, but enough to make a difference. By the way, it sounds like Aaron judge they're not going to extend them anytime soon, and he's going to hit free agency. You know, why would they? Teams don't extend good players in Major League Baseball. Apparently, except the pirates out of nowhere cabri and Hayes, the first time ever spending money. I love that deal. Smart deal by Pittsburgh. Good for the fans to actually get to see a player hit the age 30 in their city. When's the last time that happened? Joey Votto, Cincinnati. I was saying in Pittsburgh. Oh, in Pittsburgh, a boy, go back to the old, the lumber company days. You have to go back that far. I can't remember last time. Even when even in Barry Bonds and Bobby bonilla days, they didn't extend their players, obviously that's why Barry Bonds left for the Giants..

"Talk about deek, man, right? I've deep minced numbers here. You go back to the last few years. Last year, three 8 6 ERA in Oakland, the year before that, O four two very good, although only in 21 innings. Before that, four 6 5 four 7 three two 5 three three 44 one, he comes and goes. He comes and goes. You don't necessarily know what you're getting with him. And they found pitchers in their mid to late 30s before and turned them into studs. We all remember Koji. That's kind of a one in a million. I don't know that DeepMind's going to be Koji, but at the same time, they've done this before. We just don't know. And that's what makes it so scary. All right, Garrett whitlock. You referenced it locking him up for four year extension. This year is making $720,000. After this year, four years, $18.75 million to me, that's a steal. And I give all the credit in the world to VP of baseball operations, baseball president, home bloom. 1.2 million next year, 3.5, the next 5.5 in 2024 and the final year of the deal 2025, 7 and a half $1 million. Don't you think that's a steal? It really is. I mean, for a top end pitcher and again, all the more reason you got to put this guy in starting rotation. That money for a top end starter is unbelievable. We don't know that he's a top end starter yet. He's 26. But he has the potential to be. He has the potential to be. I think you have a big difference. I think you have to at least find out. I think you have to at least find out. But yeah, no, it's I'm sorry. Not to dig back in my own narrative. You're right. Whatever he ends up doing. Even if he's a closer, what did Barnes extension go for last year? That was what, 12 per, I think of it here and just give me one minute. Keep talking. Matt Barnes, I got it. It was two years, $18.75 million for this year and next year with an opt out 24. Yeah, I did so much. I did all the research I need to for the show clearly. Yeah, you look at that money. It Barton's was obviously an all star closer last year when he signed that extension. He fell apart in the second half, but the ink was already dry at that point. Whitlock last year was an all star caliber pitcher. He didn't get in, but I mean, we need a one something ERA. He's strikeout ratio was enormous. To compare those two deals, it's an absolute runaway steal for the Red Sox. I'm surprised whitlock signed.

"Everybody, it is drags Mike petrolia back with you for another episode of Red Sox beat on the CL and S media network. My old friend, Alex barth, from 98 5, the sports hub is joining us once again to talk Red Sox. Finally, the start of the 2022 season. Of course, follow Alex on Twitter at real Alex barth all one word. Lo and behold, we have a season to talk about its underway, the Red Sox dropped two of three in New York to the Yankees. They dropped that kind of ugly, depressing game to watch on Monday in Detroit after The Rain delay before maybe 500, a thousand people Red Sox lose that. In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Tiger scored twice, Red Sox dropped that contest by a score of three to one. They are one in three on the season. Of course, they started 2021. Season in which they won 92 games losing three games to the Baltimore Orioles, so let's not panic yet. I'm not saying we're going to do that. But we are going to talk about some of the pluses and some of the minuses in the first four games of this 2022 campaign. And first of all, Alex, I want to get your impression on why you think the bats have started in a bit of a slump. I mean, it feels like that's always the case, right? And I don't know, I'd like to say oh, is it shorter spring training? And that's throwing guys timing off, but you see it around the league that teams are hitting, right? So I don't think it's not like it's the, oh, well, nobody's hitting so whatever it's just guys got to ramp up into it. It feels like it's hit the Red Sox the worst I saw the stat last night. I believe it's they're hitting one 74 as a team, which ranks 29 out of 30 teams. So it's an anomaly. Okay. Let me jump in there. The bigger concern. When you rattle off a stat like that, that, to me, is pretty arbitrary. They started two for 21 with runners in scoring position. That is more alarming to me than the overall. I hadn't seen that, but you're right. When you add that context, I think that's a more important number to look at. It's tough to tell you, you know, they haven't had Trevor story in the line of who's supposed to be one of their bigger bats, but he started, I don't think he has a hit yet, right before he got sick, he's walking. I can double check real quick. But continue talking, and I'll get back to you on that. It's just, I don't know if it's the shorter camp, I don't know if it's they're playing in the cold. I don't know if it's here doing all these weird things with the lineup like that lineup he had yesterday. It's Travis Shaw. It's 'cause you're not expecting to be in the starting lineup, right? I think part of that Alex is to get.

"Might you have at this point, your kind of hamstrung really by not a lot of teams are going to put bats on the market that You would project to help you right away. You've got to get lucky and maybe add a bat or two here later in the season that, you know, gets hot and helps you at the back-end of your roster. Fine, but that's, that's what the Yankees are stuck with, right? But I think, I think this is where the Red Sox as we sit here and might be wrong, have a little bit of an advantage know. Because first of all, you know, as well as I do trade proposals, Drive, pay views, we all love them. People love talking about them trade deadlines awesome. But as we sit here, okay, what are the Red Sox? Need like, what are you trading? And I throughout Rich Rodriguez of the Pirates closer the other day. It's, you know? Sure. Okay, Michael Chavis for Rodriguez, great. I mean fine, is it going to happen? I don't think, I think the Red Sox if you could identify anything the Red Sox. Need is probably another like old guy along those lines to help to get the Barnes. But even when that said, all these things that we talk off The Red Sox have internal answered. Potentially, you have Ryan, Brazier coming back, who by the way, for 75% of the season last year was their best reliever. Okay? You home of gender and as I said he could, he could potentially be the jumper cables. He could be Rafael Devers in 2017, you know, ultimately Jacoby Ellsbury became that in 2013 with, I'm sorry 2007 with, you know, coming up in the playoffs and taking over for the last six games. And then of course you have Chris Sale, right? So the Red Sox have international guys and the blue jays called up their top. Pitching Prospect Manoa. I'm probably mispronouncing his name. But minoa Tampa Bay has been people, understand how many arms they have is crazy. Like it's it's not they're not going to keep calling up guys but then you have the Yankees. Well what what are the Yankees Solutions? You know, and so this is what I find really interesting. Okay, this is where we are at now, but how are you going to fix? How are you going to plug the holes in? What you on what you've built? I think that's those are all great points and not the, you know, we're running a little bit long here but your final thoughts on Alex Cora, and the job he's done, and I would assume the front-runner right now, for manager, of the year off, it's interesting. "He is dead, isn't in the conversation for best shortstop. He is the best. Shortstop, you don't know if you feel the same way, like forgave, oh. It's a flashier shortstop, but first of all, he's a much worse defensive shortstop much worse, right? And and I used to have this debate in the Press Box at Fenway with somebody who worked for mlb.com, actually, the statcast baseball sauvage. And I said, look, I think Xander Bogaerts is a great hitter. I think he's a good defensive player. I and that was, you know, 2014-2015 wage. I think he's become a great defensive shortstop, and he's really matured. And that's what that's the part of the game of that. I think he worked on the most refined his skills and what not correct me if I'm wrong but that's where I think he's grown really. As a, there's no question, there's no question. And, you know, it's not whatever the analytics show, I will tell you the, the eye test will will suggest that he not only makes the plays, but then every once awhile, he makes the above-average play to me in, in, in Cora had mentioned this, he's the strongest shortstop in baseball, and I think Bush was saying, was a, he's a bigger shortstop, obviously, when we think bigger shortstops, I think Ripken right, Ripton, okay. He was barely moving around in second half of his career. Shouldn't really have been playing dead. Hey, Ron. Obviously the he was too big to save. You know, he needed to move the third, your guide. Barry Larkin. He's a big guy, right? That really, you know, he's six foot long, he play he was a big guy. He's lost weight, he's on the Reds. TV crew here in Cincinnati and he does he actually does a great job. I wanted to get to Jesse Winker and Nick Castellanos office before we conclude but no Barry was He was average sized. Dave Concepcion was bigger than than very large. Yeah, but he was skinnier. Yeah, so, you know, you look at Bogart's, he's 6 to, I think he's listening to 6 to 2:18 a.m. but he's solid, right? And so, I just look at when you were talking to this conversation about the best shortstop, I don't think it's a tell me, who's better, like, you have to tell me who's been off all around? I mean, this would be the only guy that would but he's terrible defensively, right? I I'm not arguing Rob, I'm just playing this game. This is where we are. You sure it's all about production. It's very little, I mean there are metrics on defense. I get that certainly are runs prevented and whatnot, but so much of the game is so I'm pitching numbers, spin rates, and in offense, o p s and slash lines, and that's it. And that's how decisions are made on rosters. Yeah well and then, you know, you know why I mean, because you can lean on a team like Tampa look at Campos baffling to me and and you look at well, why is tax so good and not only could this you're the good every year? Yes, because you have Manuel Margot, you know, six six t o p s or whatever it clean up and and you know you go down the line and you lose Charlie Morton and you lose flakes now and you're still in it and really a big part of it is because of, you know, they're leaving a lot of stuff that you talk about but also this go back to defensive part of it. Like they're really good defensive team, very very so when you don't have the payroll right, role pays primarily for offense and defensive depth. Yes. And and so does that tell you what is almost more important now? And this is and unfortunately, you know what happens is that you have teams saying to their ownership..

"Alex Cora in Houston as wage. Kick off a four-game series, a big tough stretch for the Red Sox coming up Rob. They haven't forgotten about Alex Cora in, Houston know, I mean, how can I mean, you think back in that track? I don't know what your initial reaction, obviously, it was a big mess, a big cluster, and everything else. But as we sort of get away from it, like one of the things that I really like is increasingly bothersome to me, is the Players being so willing to just basic, like Cora was a core was a sweet spot of this, right? Let's make no mistake about it, right? He was the guy who was out of the organization, who wasn't a player That they could they could say boom. That's our guy and he deserved a lot of it. There's no question about it, but is mind-boggling looking back at it. How long you had all these players? Just get off accountability? Yeah, no accountability. I would agree with that. I think that's fair but I think a lot of these players are so conditioned. You know that I'm talking to all of them from the minor leagues on up, even before the minor leagues in amateur ball, high school. If they're playing at a high level Cape Cod, whatever look for an advantage and Advantage equals cheating. I mean, let's it's another term for it. So you from ISM for cheating is advantage and baseball and that's what they've grown up with. It's a culture of baseball and what mujhe pagal my mind is, you're asking these players to immediately change that culture overnight, and these players have become so accustomed and tome. But your job is to look for any advantage anywhere, you can get it and all of a sudden, don't do that anymore. Well, that's like stopping, you know, two hundred tonne freight train coming down the tracks, right? You're not home overnight. Oh no, you know, a little things like we had earlier this year, hit or looking into it. I forget what who it was, but him looking into the catcher's signal, you know, like just take a peek. Listen, I did that in Little League, you know, or whatever. I mean, this is what you do obviously stealing signs from second base. This is what you do. I think you're right. I think people get caught up in Iraq. Well, you know, everything is all of it is, is awful. How can you do that? And, but it's not this, it's not the the same level of banging on a trash can, right? Or or shovel of what Houston. I mean, they would have kept going with it. Let's be honest. And because this wasn't just about Cora. This wasn't just about hinge. This was about Lou. Now, this is about this keep going and we're good job. Smarter than everybody else, which by the way, they aren't alone. And you know what, I, you know, I took pride in it and I think we all did because we were part of something really unique at the beginning, and it was a lot of fun and still continues to be for those back, the market. And all you have to do is read Scott McLaughlin's article on weei.com about what Saturday night meant to Boston. And and having the Bruins come back the way they did against a lenders. That was a great read. I I enjoyed that. Okay, so why are the Red Sox one of the great stories to start the 2021 season? They're thirty two and twenty day of a three-game winning streak. They had fans back at Fenway Rob Saturdays. You know, it was a different kind of Fenway and everybody was relieved to see fans back there. Why have they gotten off to this? Great start. I mean, I think, you know, as well as it's, you have to begin with starting pitching either. You sing can swim with starting pitching, right? And when we came into this year, people would ask, you know, cuz I had the privilege of doing almost all the spring training games on the radio, because no one else could and there was no other writers there. So I get a chance to see these guys and people would ask say, what do you think? What do you think? I said well, I can't really tell you because I have no idea which way the starting pitching is going to go and and, you know, go back track to 2015 after Jon Lester left off the five Aces. Remember that, you know remember that and how everything was built on projections Wade, Miley Clay, Buchholz Joe Kelly, Rick Porcello Justin Masterson, everything was built on projections and it didn't work out and it felt like this was.
