I'll Peanut Jam Your Brain

"Okay so earlier. I did this thing. That probably sounded weird to you. Emily your sentence. It didn't make any sense but you know another day. Another dollar alright. Okay well well so when someone does something unexpected like that when they're talking to you or get this even when you're reading something that doesn't follow the standard conventions of the language. Something kind of cool happens in your brain l. So they can actually measure this right so when we studied brain one of the ways that we can study. Brain activity is by measuring electrical current. That is flowing through your cortex rates so the surface of your brain for the cells to talk to each other. They released electrical current. This is sarah phillips our expert i mentioned earlier. I am a rising fourth year. Phd student in the linguistics department at new york university and also a member of the neuro linguistic slab very cool. She studies bilingualism and code switching which we will touch on in a future episode because it is objectively but for today. She's helping me out as explain. These things called n. Four hundred and p six hundred. He's are measurable responses. That happen your brain as you process language okay so little electrical signals that your brain is always giving off right but these are different from your normal brain buzzing. That would happen. If you're listening to like a quote normal sentence got it basically these phenomena are your brain saying like hey hold up something weird happening here okay so like when i peanut jam your brain that an example of one that can spark some. You know chemistry for you. Oh yeah yeah. I felt wrong and a lot of ways so as i peanut. Jam your brain. That's a good one anyways. Yes in nineteen eighty two psychologists. Marta kunas and steven hilliard published a paper showing that among these electrical signals. There was this big response about four hundred milliseconds person. Reading a sentence came across a word that was like semantic league confusing or the meaning was wrong. Okay so it's like a linguistic oddball sentences thrown your way your brain will produce a end. Four hundred response four hundred milliseconds after you heard peanut gem in that benefits. I peanut jam. Your brain your brain was like whoa. What's that doesn't make any sense. Exactly yeah and your brain. Does this kwong in less than half a second. Which is wild. So sir philip's art linguist from earlier explained. It happens in other scenarios like garden path sentences. So you start to hear a sentence and you think you know what's going to happen next but then something goes wrong okay and so when something goes wrong your brain has to go wait what. I don't think i interpreted this how it was supposed to be. I've got a restart which sarah says can happen with the sentence as simple as he spread the warm bread with socks yummy. This is fun. I like this okay. So how does this compare to. The p six hundred you were mentioning earlier is different than and four hundred the big differences just that they go in opposite directions and they happen at different points so when she says opposite directions. She's talking about how they kind of show up on these science graphs. You've them sure one one shows up in the positive and the other shows up as negative and and okay but for me the easiest thing to hang onto is that they happen at different times so the four hundred happens four hundred milliseconds after the wuxi. The p six hundred. The brain gives off slightly later. That response peaks roughly six hundred milliseconds after the woopsie. That's really it and we're trying to understand when we see this type of fact. What could this affect represent. What is this affect characterizing. What's happening in the brain in. Initially researchers thought that the answers to these questions was that the end four hundred was happening because of semantic errors so involving the meaning of words right and that the p six hundred was showing up because of grammatical errors which not to brag. But i make all this and we've met you for that. Yeah yeah sure okay but but it turns out as research into all this has gone on these effects might be more generalized kind of than researchers previously thought it might just have to do with how your brain processes complex language and this just shows that when we think about language and how we process language. They're actually a lot of steps involved. Starting from recognizing that the sound that you hear is a sound of the language that you speak and how those sounds then combined to form some parts of words.

"My next training is Monday January twentieth. Of course all of this again is linked in in the show notes for this episode. So now let's get right into it. So here's my back story on. How and when I started to earn revenue anew from my podcast in December twenty seventeen? I quit my job at NPR to be a full time podcast. Here's what went into that decision. I launched like my podcast in June. Two Thousand Sixteen after that I spent six months focused solely on developing my content and growing my audience in October two thousand sixteen at tested out e commerce by selling t shirts so that month I made sixty six dollars from t shirt sales and then in November two thousand sixteen. I may three hundred and forty three dollars from t shirt sales. Wuxi you gotTA start small it start out in thousands but that was encouraging for me. Because I saw that upward trajectory so then in December twenty sixteen I made five hundred and four dollars from t shirt sales and a mini course increase sale by December twenty sixteen. I knew I wanted to start monetize inside. House approach in a more consistent fashion without having to rely on t shirt sales because the margins were a little too slim for my liking so I researched other potential revenue streams. I looked at creating my courses. I looked at sponsorship and I decided to focus on one at a time and shifted my attention to podcast sponsorship. Here's how I went about it. I reached out how to and spoke to another podcast who I knew was working with sponsors. And she was doing that through her podcast host and so I want to find out how that experience was for her to explore whether I wanted to do it through my host or do independent pitching then. I decided I wanted to do independent pitching so began making a list of companies that I heard on other podcasts with similar audience demographics then I narrowed that list down to brands that made sense for my audience and narrowed it down even further to brands. That are actually used. Because if I'm GONNA read out an ad I want to be able to vouch for it so that January I sent a cold email meaning I had no prior relationship with this brand other than using it but I knew no one at the company so I sent a cold email to an email address that Google and you know what happened next. They actually responded back. And the person who responded back was not the right contacts but they were kind kind enough to forward it to the right contact so find those email addresses on Google. You guys if the opportunity is right they will stand it. Internally in the company by sending that one email I secured a four thousand dollar multi-month sponsorship contract on my first try and thus began my journey into developing profitable podcast and business by December. Two thousand seventeen. I was earning four figure months. I made three thousand two hundred fifty nine on dollars that month from my podcast to be exact and that month after understanding what my consistent revenue streams would be especially if I went even harder order after being able to save from my main hustle. Because that's a big part of the reason why I decided to leave. You know was making sure that I had money saved that that I could fall back on and then also knowing that I would be able to double and triple this figure if I focused on it fully. I decided to make the leap and I was able to quit my job to focus on side-hustle pro full time. Here's what you should know about starting to make money from your own podcast so number one and you do not need a ton of downloads to make money podcasting. This is a common misconception. A lot of people think it's about the downloads alone and I'm here today to to dispel the myth it's about the downloads but also about the topic and the audience. You're reaching and the engagement off your audience when I pitched my first sponsor ahead an average of five thousand downloads per episode and that is considered pretty small for what these sponsors are used to. But I didn't let that discourage me when you think that you need hundreds of thousands of downloads. It's easy to get discouraged about your download numbers or audience size and when you do that you miss out on opportunities to connect equiped brands. Who Need Your Niche audience? Who are trying to get in front of your niche audience who have a product that would be perfect for your particular podcast audience? No matter the size so be sure to keep that in mind and also keep in mind that you would miss out on an opportunity to provide useful products and services to your audience audience. If you're solely focused on numbers you do not need a ton of downloads. You can pitch with less. You can create products and services with less. It's just you'll be burning less money at first and we will get to that in a second the second thing you should know about starting to make money as a pie caster is that you need to get to know your listeners. Get to know the personality and statistics of the typical listener of your show. Yes your listeners. They individually are diverse. I but there are certain characteristics that unite them all usually that comes down to the information. They all want this information they. They're listening to your particular cler topic for a reason. They need that counseling. Or if it's a more lighthearted show they need the comic relief that your show provides. Your show is a solution to their problem in some way so get to know why that is core. They how old are they. Where do they live what content resonates with them and why a hat that I have used for years now is using my instagram and facebook insights to learn more about my audience? That's like the first layer for me of learning about who they dr where they live all that good stuff and you can also send you a podcast listeners. Survey that's another way so listen to your listeners on all platforms though read eat those direct messages. Read those reviews read the emails. Read the comments and you'll start to get a sense of what are their challenges. What are their needs? What the products today talk about? What conferences do they attend? What services do they use? What questions do they have once you get to know your listeners? Once you know who your audience is you can work to grow this audience and you can work to provide useful and valuable services products.

"There regular guy was a quote unquote black quarter i would say i don't know i would've guessed a hell of a lot more recently than the nineteen eighties rodney peete. That's that i agree with you. There's there's gotta be a degree of purpose set behind that like you can't have a wuxi. Do we just had one for thirty years. I get the idea that it would would be infrequent. Put never or damn near. Never you try to mccamley tight in that story. You okay look that would have been a terrible all ideas okay because cam newton not only was a heisman trophy winning quarterback a national championship winning quarterback and an super bowl appearing quarterback envy pen and m._v._p. Vive cam is fantastic without but if you look at camp and he's six foot six seventy pounds you'd be thinking that's not a quarterback. That's something other than that. One makes more sense dance to me then they just haven't had any that the cam piece i get it. I mean i wouldn't try to move him because he keeps winning and doing them but you look at a guy six. What's camp to sixty two quarterbacks. Look like that understand to if you're used to recruiting from certain pool of schools to get your talent you know every school does that have their go to schools but at the same time when you have outstanding quarterback played right in your own backyard and you're not even knocking on that door that seems a little bit quick purposeful question for you guys tomorrow before we start to show. Are we talking about zeke being signed or we still doing the close. I'll say yes zeke. We'll be signed if he's if he's on his way back to dallas. They got something done wins. "And guess what? It's fair why. Because the people in all the states that elect smarter politicians that don't tax this citizenry into death. They didn't have the same benefit and perk that I did because they are not being they don't have a state income tax. Why does New York and California and Illinois New Jersey get this added benefit of deducting their state income taxes? There's no incentive for these governors to do anything else, but keep raising it 'cause people just deducted well that doesn't help people in Texas, Florida, Tennessee or any of these other low tax states. So the president's right? You know, what you want lower taxes elect governors that will and legislatures that'll give you lower taxes. Anyway, by the way, Trump is hit an all time high in the Gallup poll Wuxi daisy, Pelosi's warning twenty twenty candidates, we've got a see mainstream and not to follow left-wingers in her party that are about to probably. Unseat her at some point over the cliff and she's down on the impeachment idea. We're gonna get into this in detail. The top of the next hour Nunez's challenges challenging Muller straight up his account on key. Russia gate witnesses. Listen, all this talk about. Let's let Muller testify almo for it. I want to know when Robert Muller and his merry band of democratic donors. His pit bull. Andrew weisman. That was at Hillary's victory party at the Javits center and Jeannie Ray used to be the Clinton attorney on the foundation. I want to know when they knew about there was no collusion. I want to know why if the mandate was so broad that they can look into taxi medallions loan, applications and axes and Farah violations. Okay. Why didn't they look at the dirty Russian dossier that Hillary paid for to impact the twenty sixteen election, and the fact that even the New York Times saying that dirty dossier might have might have always been Russian disinformation designed to create chaos in our electoral system, how did he ignore that in his entire investigation? You know now is going to do his job. And he gave he said Muller's over absolutely done. There's nothing to talk about with Muller. Anything you hear a Muller anymore from these house? Democrats Senate only noise that's going nowhere. And now Trump is not going to cooperate. He didn't invoke executive privilege. He allowed every person including the White House counsel, which to me is dumb. Don, Mcgann, why he ever testified for thirty hours. Is beyond any comprehension. I have because that's clearly attorney client privilege in that situation. They certainly could have said where invoking executive privilege. I mean, Obama invoked executive privilege on fast and furious for his own attorney general Eric Holder at the time, but not one time that he invoked executive privilege. Everybody was encouraged to testify Muller's bowlers band of Democrats, and they turned over one point five million documents and the president answered whatever questions Muller had and they still had nothing for the fourth time. But nobody in the media, look, there's such phonies. They care about collusion. Well, we have new evidence today that in fact. Yeah, the DNC did try to collude with real evidence with Ukraine's government to help Hillary and the two thousand sixteen election where all the I hate collusion people. They're deaf. They're just silent. They don't wanna talk about it. Just like they don't. I wanna talk about the dirty Russian dossier of Hillary that's likely Russian disinformation. Just like they don't really care about obstruction. But there's if they did that care about Hillary's deletions of subpoenaed. Emails bleach pit of them busting apart of with hammers devices and pulling sim cards, just like they don't really care in spite of saying, so I believe I believe Cavanaugh Kavanagh's accusers from high school, but there's no believers as it relates to the Lieutenant governor Virginia when you have credible allegations by credible people that told people at the time of violent rape and violence sexual assault. This is one big scam. They are not who they say that they are. And if Muller wants to go up and testify, well, there's a thousand questions he probably doesn't want to have to delve into. And if they want to go after Bill bar the way they're going after him. Good luck with. That because the difference between bar and what happened with the special counsel and even Rosenstein himself went along agreed with bar as the office of legal counsel. This was not a hard decision, and it was not based on any Justice department policy or any constitutional potential problems that could arise as it relates to whether or not you can indict or not indict a sitting president. Now, those same people that denied the election results couldn't believe that where they were wrong. And by the way, to be clear, the same people that never vetted Obama and Frank Marshall Davis, and Alinsky disciple and acorn and community community organizing or the church GD, America or black liberation theology. Or as best friends, the unrepentant terrorist airs enduring those people. Yeah, they'll never did their job there that just worship at the altar of Obama. They will they'll worshiping Hillary. Alter they thought election day twenty sixteen they had Trump be beaten down. They were Getty, and then it was a visible change on their faces. This Muller report is a shock to their system at or above the twenty sixteen election results because they really thought he had they thought they had him. And now, the only thing they've got to do is they're floundering with noise and lies and more conspiracies rather than maybe turn a little bit introspective and say, we messed this up we lied, and we created conspiracy theories that we did no fact checking and we took on every anonymous source that was thrown at us. They never told you Obama's record. Oh, they got it wrong with Richard jewel in ninety six. Yeah. They're still doing with UVA, Duke, lacrosse, Ferguson, Missouri, Cambridge police, and and Baltimore Maryland, they suck. And now we have a poll out today. Seven out of ten Americans think they live regular league to the public. And you know, what they do? Mother's day is coming this Sunday. I.

"Happiness, and I'll explain coming up in just a matter of moments, by the way. Hopefully, there are no hecklers the audience I'm looking around, and I don't wanna be called an a-hole by anybody in the audience today. Okay. Yeah. The crowd looks pretty good to me. Of course, I'm referring to Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks step down sometime last year as the CEO from up mistaken. And of course, he made the announcement on sixty minutes on CBS on Sunday night that he's considering an independent run for president. And well. He was heckled. So Howard Schultz was at a Barnes and noble. Yes, there are still Barnes and noble. Actual brick and mortar stores that are still out there that it is true. I'm not making this up. In fact, there's a big Barnes and noble on the north side of union square in New York right on what does that seventeenth street if I'm not mistaken, and there's a multi-storey Barnes and noble layer. That's where. That were Hillary Hillary go there for something and. Whoever writes, and that's one of the big ubiquitous required stops is that that Barnes and noble. Oh, Michelle Obama, Michelle Obama, also when she launched her book aside from like, the two thousand dollars tickets to see her at the Barclay center, and and other places around the country and in Chicago, very accessible for the people. She also did a stop at that Barnes and noble at union square in Manhattan. So we had Howard Schultz at Starbucks last night. And he was heckled. And of course, he's talking about his book. What is it ground up from the ground up? And I is that like a little little tie in with coffee grounds and from the ground up. I would imagine that that's the little cutesy Wuxi title, double entendre that they had in mind here. And it will listen I've got respect for how I'm not a Starbucks customer on any regular basis. I the last time I was in a Starbucks. I don't know. I don't think it's been in the last eight or ten months, and I'm not a coffee drinker. I like tea I will drink tea, but I don't go to T places per se if I'm having Chinese food, or if I'm I'm doing dim sum in Chinatown, then I'll I'll switch back some tea, but you know, when I go to Starbucks. It's typically I'll have one of the I don't like coffee. I I just don't like the coffee flavor. So I've never actually had a Cup of coffee. So I'll get one of those if I'm ever in a Starbucks or I'm forced to meet somebody there or whatever I'll get the vanilla. Slurpee drink. It's just a vanilla slushy, essentially. So that's what get at Starbucks. But but the point is though, I have a lot of respect for taking, you know, one little shabby location in Seattle and turning it into twenty eight or thirty thousand locations nationwide. So I do have a respect for his business acumen now politically don't see eye to eye with him on a lot. I do agree though, that our our national debt is unsustainable. And the the pipers get a call at some point for that. So I do agree that you can't sustain a debt. Indefinitely like that. There are some economists. I think you can and let's not debate that at this point. But he's also going after a camera come on. How do you say her name Kamala Camelot Camelot Camelot what what does it? So commonly that was one of my interactions. I said Kamla. But every every every time I watch television the anchors they pronounce her name differently. It seems like what is caller, comma, comma, comma, comma, comma, chameleon Kamla chameleon is what will call her anyone. She wants health care for all and she wants to do away with health insurance in this country and Schultz is attacked her on that. I also agree with well partial position that he has. Anyway, the point is is that Howard Schultz was heckled at this Barnes and noble in Manhattan last night. I don't know who it was in the audience. I have the audio and he was called an a-hole. Now, we discussed this. We talked about this on yesterday's program. And so this is being talked about everywhere that the fear is because Schultz is a liberal Democrat. He though wants to run to. To the right. Not quite as radical as the field of a lot of these Democrats that are throwing their hats in whether it's Kamala Harris, whether it's a Castro whether it's well, you name it. I mean, this is Bernie Sanders Hillary's talking again, you know, you've got the mindset and the attention grabber, this Casio Cortez and her ridiculously moronic radical ideas, so Schultz sees an opportunity to run as an independent and because he feels that the democratic field is too radical. But of course, as has been discussed, and is probably the case. Is that if he does run he would do a a reverse Ross Perot, and he would siphon votes away from the democratic nominee, and the Democrats are afraid, well that's gonna guarantee a re election of President Trump for a second term. So you have liberals and extremists leftists that are there Democrats is even centrists that are going ballistic here and Howard don't run you're going to take away because remember back in ninety two George H W Bush lost to Bill Clinton and most likely it was because of the votes that Ross Perot as an independent took away from Bush and the number. I believe was around nineteen percent or so so do the math, George H W Bush would've been a two term president. If it were. Not for Ross Perot. I don't think many people dispute that so back to the audio urine. And I wanna play this. We'll grab some phone calls are also our friends at Newsmax have a poll I want to talk about their their poll at it has to do with with Howard Schultz as well. We'll talk about that here in just a second. But here's the audio again Barnes and noble talking about his book this from the ground up. And that's what a heckler jumps into the equation is that I am seriously considering running for president as a centrist independent, and I wanted to clarify the word independent, which I've you merely as a designation on the ballot. How long? Don't help.

"I think that we're going to keep seeing more strong women in film and what i hope for that is that we stop saying like oh and other female lead and instead we just say oh another great movie because we like here's a prime example um so black panther is coming out and everyone's talking about black panther and and apparently is awesome and i can't wait to see it and but there are some comments like it's two black of a movie thursday too many black people in the movie no people are actually saying that there's too many black people in them guests only black people are in lord of the rings halle blocked room ordering some traffic and you can't count works uh i can't think of his there's not a single one here while i agree with it and that was a trilogy and noone said it was a white movie monster they just said it was a really great movie but they're looking at black panther and calling it a black movie yes so just as much as i want people look at black panther and say what a great movie what a great superhero movie i want people to see a movie where a bunch of women are leads and strong and powerful and instead of saying like what a great strong female oriented film i want them to say what a great movie removed loved by all of us were female apoe should remove an alien was not a female empower movie chew carter w erosion wasn't if you know really which is why it worked because people are always there's always this thing were writers are like i don't know how to write women you write a man and then you just change the name that is literally if how do you feel about her under the and you know she's got ta get into the suzhou wuxi earners you know added.
